Pastoral Letter Psalm 84 verse 5 “Blessed are those whose strength is in you, whose hearts are set on pilgrimage.” Pilgrimage is a journey, often to a Holy Place, which allows us to make time for God. For the psalmist, who wrote the verse above, it was to Jerusalem, the ‘Holy City of God’, which is still sacred to Jews, Christians and Muslims. Bishop Martin, the Bishop of Chichester, has designated this year as a ‘Year of Prayer’ for the whole Diocese to deepen and widen our Christian experience. Part of that is to make a Pilgrimage to our Cathedral. We are invited on Saturday 14th July to journey down to the city of Chichester for a service in the Cathedral at 12 noon led by the Bishop of Horsham, The Rt. Revd. Mark Sowerby and the Archdeacon of Horsham, The Venerable Fiona Windsor. The gathering point is in The Bishop’s Gardens. Many people may wish to walk some of the way, the plan is to meet at Hunston and to set off at 10.30am along the Canal path to rendezvous with other Pilgrims in the garden before entering the Cathedral. Over the years many folk from here at St. Peter’s have made a Pilgrimage, both in the UK and overseas. One notable spot is in Portugal, Santiago de Compostela. To commemorate the visits there is a colourful window in Church in the north transept, which is well worth a look. So I would like to encourage you, whether you are a regular faithful Christian worshipper or someone who might like to experience what a Pilgrimage is, to join us on 5 14th July. During the Late Middle Ages Chichester was a great centre of Pilgrimage because of the exemplary life of ‘Richard de Wych’ who was Bishop of Chichester from 12451253. He was canonised in 1262, his shrine, in the Cathedral, became a place of Pilgrimage second to that of Thomas a Becket’s shrine at Canterbury. During the reign of Henry VIII much of the Church in England underwent the beginnings of a reformation that removed many of the practices of the medieval Church. The shrine of St. Richard’s was removed, only being restored in the latter part of the last century. However, one of the lasting links we have is the prayer of St. Richard. Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ For all the benefits Thou hast given me, For all the pains and insults Thou hast borne for me. O most merciful Redeemer, friend and brother, May I know Thee more clearly, Love Thee more dearly, Follow Thee more nearly. This prayer exemplifies what it means to be a Pilgrim in a Pilgrim Church – seeking always to follow Jesus as our Guide – who we may truly KNOW, LOVE and FOLLOW. Come and join in on 14th July – for more information contact us on 700339. Clive and Marion

Prayer Prayer Group and Quiet Mornings If anyone would like to spend half an hour in fellowship and prayer then they are most welcome on a Tuesday at 4.30pm, when prayers are said for the life of the Parish. Contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details of venue. On the third Friday of every month Quiet Mornings are held at the home of Wendy Duff at 10.30am. It is a peaceful time when you can relax, recharge your batteries and listen to music, poetry, readings and prayers. You will come away refreshed and ready to carry on! Please contact Wendy Duff on 700295 for details.

Chain of Prayer Worried about a loved one, a friend or yourself and would like prayers to be said by a chain of people? Contact Wendy 700295 or Gillian 700157 and they will start the chain by contacting the person next to them on the list and so it goes all the way round. A copy of the chain is on the notice board at the back of church. Prayer is a powerful and important part of life and one should never under estimate its effect. You don't need to give any details of the problem just ask for prayers to be said and it will happen. Please note that it will be treated with total confidentiality.

Prayers are offered for parishioners who are in special need, especially the sick and frail. Please advise either of the churchwardens of any persons or situations you would like remembered in this way. 7 All those living in particular roads are prayed for regularly, the whole parish being covered over a 12-week cycle: Week beginning:

Robin David Miles 27 January 1943 – 23 May 2018 The service of thanksgiving for the life of Robin Miles took place in the church on 14th June. Robin spent many years of his childhood in Pound Cottage in Skiff Lane, Wisborough Green before moving away from the village. In 1962 he was married at St Peter ad Vincula to his wife Jenny and after spending several years working for two agricultural machinery companies in the area he ended up living in the old butcher’s shop in Bucks Green where he set up in business as repairer and provider of garden machinery. Bell ringing was one of Robin’s hobbies and he started ringing the bells in St Peter ad Vincula in 1981. After Margaret Pepler’s death, Robin took over the captaincy of the tower, a role his father had held before him, and remained as captain until his death near the end of May. He will be sorely missed.

Wisborough Green Primary School News The summer term is always a busy one, but this year seems to be exceptionally busy! The children have had the most amazing learning experiences this term which will help to shape their exciting futures. Preparing for life beyond primary school is something we think is really important, which is why we held a Careers Fair for our older children. Our brilliant parents talked about the roles they have taken on in their chosen careers. Carefully planned questions were asked to give the children an insight into what the world of work could hold for them. Everyone was buzzing with excitement about how they can make a difference to others in the future and what they need to do to get there. Thank you to all of the volunteers who were able to help on the day. 'Listen to Us' is the title of our whole school topic this term, so we wanted the children to learn how diverse life can be. Our local circus, Cirque Normandie, provided us with the perfect way to showcase how diverse different careers can be. Everyone enjoyed the fantastic workshops held in the big top, learning new skills and seeing first hand why perseverance is key to being successful. Even the teachers learned to juggle and do the hula-hula! I was blown away by the incredible singing at the 11 locality music concert, performed at the Hawth Theatre. Hours and hours of rehearsal and perseverance in abundance, produced a sound so pure and perfected. Well done to all the children who worked so hard and to the staff for supporting them so well. We know that people in sports are some of the most dedicated and committed professionals. At WGPS, we definitely have teams of children ready to take on any challenge. Our swimming team came first in the locality swimming gala, with triumphant wins from the girls relay team, the boys 25m individual races and the girls 25m butterfly. Well done for working hard as a team to achieve a fantastic win! The year 6 cricket team took on other local teams and had a thoroughly enjoyable day. They showed fantastic skills, real sportsmanship and had lots of fun. Well done team. If you would like to be part of our staff team and help support the children, then we may have a vacancy for you. We are currently looking to appoint a Lunchtime Supervisor and a Breakfast Club Supervisor for September. Hours and working days can be flexible, so please contact the school office if you would like some more information. office@wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk Visit our website for more info: http://www.wisboroughgreenschool.org.uk or follow us on Twitter - @WGPS864

Nature Notes I write this just before going off for a short holiday, and I am feeling somewhat ambivalent about it. The garden is full of young birds, all tucking in to various treats and I am now convinced that I am the only one who truly understand their dietary needs! So - do I really want to dash off and sit by a beautiful blue sea on a little Greek island? Um - actually now I think about it, maybe I do! To make me feel better about leaving I’ve just spent the morning cleaning all the feeders. They are now spotless, and germfree, which is very satisfying. Sadly, we’ve already seen a couple of young finches looking a bit sorry for themselves. SO - Note to self - more regular cleaning of feeders in future please! On a jollier note, I watched a family of hedge sparrows on the grass just this morning, a parent and three babies. They all three sat begging, wings aflutter and their baby gapes still bright yellow. Mum, or dad, did their best to share things round, poking food into one open beak after another, until deciding enough was enough and flying up onto the rose arch. The three youngsters sat looking totally confused, beaks catching the light as they turned back and forth, and their stripy brown wings shining in the sun. The parent finally relented and flew back down, only for a magpie to scare the whole family off into the bushes nearby. Maybe they all went back to the nest for a snooze. There’s been a red kite flying over, and once or twice it has shared the sky with a buzzard or two, which is a great sight. The buzzards were way up circling on the thermals, and the kite wafted across below, wheeling and turning just as if it had nowhere special to go and nothing urgent to do. There are swallows galore at 13 Brinsbury College, and even more, with swifts around too, down in Lavant near Chichester. And latest news of the tawny owls in Loxwood - the bigger chick has fledged, dropping down onto the ground and hopping over to the nearest hedgerow before disappearing into the woods. No word on the smaller youngster yet. And we have got our ‘namesake’ around again, after several year’s absence. A young Jay is scoffing peanuts from the feeders. I managed to grab this distant photo of it yesterday (along with a squirrel!). Lovely big birds with the most raucous of calls! Above: Jay with squirrel Welcome back to Jays Farm! No other pictures this month, so Roland’s shot of a cluster of tadpoles in the canal – taken on a walk in May, can fill the space. He said it was a lovely peaceful walk with lots of wildlife on view – so it sounds as if it’s worth a visit to the Wey and Arun Canal sometime. Hooray for Sussex – never mind Greece! Village Care Scheme The St. Peter’s Village Care Team meets regularly and its aims are to give help and support to the residents of Wisborough Green in as many ways as possible. This 14 includes visiting people who are housebound, in hospitals or in nursing homes, and comforting those who are suffering from illness, bereavement, loneliness etc. We also provide (through the West Sussex County Council) a free library service for those who are unable to leave their homes. See next page. Each team member is responsible for looking after an area of the village, for welcoming new arrivals, and for giving friendly advice. We produce “Welcome to Wisborough Green Cards” containing useful information which are always delivered personally. When appropriate, we send out cards on the first anniversaries of Baptism and Confirmation, and for bereavements. We are always open to suggestions and new ideas to help the community. Please feel free to contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946 for any enquiries.

Village Car Service The Village Car Service, a part of the St Peter’s Village Care Scheme (see above), has now been in operation for over twenty years. It provides transport to Doctor’s and Dentist’s surgeries and local hospitals on request. There is no charge for this service but donations are invited from passengers as these are ploughed back into the Team’s budget to pay petrol expenses to the volunteer drivers. The service is co-ordinated by Jennie Burr (tel:01403 700607). We have a dedicated team of drivers and are extremely grateful to them all, but always need new recruits to cover busy periods. If anyone is interested in driving for the village please contact Suzanne Mosley on 01403 700946.

Ad Vincula - “How far can you go?” This month, we only have one entry but from a rather unusual place - Kabul in Afghanistan! Some of you may remember the Fallows family (Trisha & Terry and their daughters Emily and Amy)? Emily and Amy were very active members of St Peter’s young people’s groups Milestone and Cornerstone run by Roger and Judy Moorey. Emily is now a doctor and has been working with her husband in Afghanistan for some years now. Currently, Emily is working with a Mental health programme which is a huge need in Afghanistan. Please remember to take your copy with you wherever you travel and don’t worry if your travels don’t take you to distant shores, we still want to find the most interesting or unusual location for Ad Vincula so please keep those photos coming in! You can email them to editor@stpeterswg.org.uk or post them on our Facebook Site: Above: Emily in Kabul, Afghanistan (3,570m)

Village Hall News As I wrote last month, we were delighted to receive the necessary consents to proceed with the modernisation of the hall. The project team has now begun the task of creating the detailed specification that is needed to obtain meaningful tenders for the work. There is a lot of work to be done by just a handful of people. So it may take a while before there is much progress for me to report about this. The village hall currently has its own funds of nearly £250,000 to use for the modernisation, but as I have advised earlier in these articles we still need to obtain substantial additional funds to help us to complete the project. At the time of writing, we have just arranged a preliminary meeting with representatives of the Big Lottery Fund to explore any opportunity to obtain grant funds from that source. This first meeting with the Big Lottery Fund will not produce any firm promise of grants but it is an opportunity to establish our project in the minds of the grant makers and to discuss the criteria on which their grant making decisions are made so that we can better understand how best to present our case for funds when the time comes to make a formal application. There will be much more work when we start to explore other sources of grant funding. More next month. Keith Carter, Chairman, Village Hall Management Committee 17

Can you give an hour of your time to our fabulous August Bank Holiday Fete? Many of you are no doubt planning on attending Wisborough Green’s annual village fete on 27th August. The fete is totally reliant on volunteers to organise and run it and we are a very small team! If you are around on the Bank Holiday weekend, please consider helping us out; you only need give an hour of your time and it really does make all the difference to us. You could help us set up the night before or put up marquees early on fete day. You could help out on one of our stalls or join in organising the fun dog show or the family races. At the end of the day we would love to have a few energetic helpers to join the clear up operation. It really is good fun – honestly – and we even throw in refreshments! To find out more or to volunteer please contact Louise on 01403 700689 or email clerk@wisboroughgreenpc.org

Parish Council Responds to June’s ‘Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans’ In last month’s Dos, Don’ts, Moans & Groans, the action of the Parish Council and the grass cutting contractor was called into question. The Parish Council would like to clarify that it maintains the village green as a recreation area for all. It is not a sports field but an open space for all to use and as such, repairs and additional work to meet sporting requirements is the responsibility of the Sports Association. There will be times when weather and ground conditions make the works to the Green more challenging. This was the wettest start to the year for many years and most village greens were in a similar position with excess grass cuttings on the surface. The repairs undertaken to the Green were not dangerous but the grass growth was less advanced than had been hoped due to the delayed growing season. Unfortunately, other scheduled repairs had to be cancelled due to saturated ground. The Green is an important and well used village asset that may, at times, not be at its best coming out of a tough winter, but as we can now see, it is looking as good as always, the grass cutting is under control and the Green will continue to give hours of pleasure this summer. The Parish Council remains confident in the services provided by the grass cutting contractor. In answer to the trees being removed behind Stonewall Cottage, planning permission was obtained from Chichester District Council by the property owner. Wisborough Green Parish Council

Ladybug wins PDSA Commendation As many of villagers know Ladybug, I thought I would share her story and how she won her PDSA COMMENDATION award.

19

Ladybug arrived from Afghanistan back in 2015, but her story starts back sometime in 2008. Ladybug was born on the streets of Kabul in 2008. She became a very young mum to 4 puppies in Kabul. She scaled an 8ft blast wall (I assume several times a day) to steal food for herself and puppies. When the puppies were old enough to fend for themselves, Ladybug literally moved in to the place where she was stealing food. The lovely lady realised the puppies weren't with Ladybug and managed to get the 2 girls - the 2 boys had wandered off on their own to a British Military base!! Over time, the charity Nowzad was set up by one of our British Marines and they fell in love with Ladybug!! Several years later I adopted this beautiful girl and she came to live with myself and family here in Wisborough Green. The village welcomed this timid scared dog with open arms. I decided back in the new year to nominate her for a PDSA award on her devotion to her puppies. I had to get statements from the charity and, kindly, my friends Paul and Sue also did a statement. Months went past and I didn't hear anything. Then April came and I heard that she had been awarded!! I was so happy!!! Ladybug has learnt to trust - when there are treats!! - and this is down to people in the village kindly being patient with Ladybug!! I wanted to share Ladybug’s success and what she has overcome to everyone in Wisborough Green. I hope you all feel as proud as I and my family do. Donna Pont

The Third RunWisborough a Great Success! Sunday 13th May - For the third year, we were blessed with great weather, a host of enthusiastic runners, walkers, helpers and spectators creating a fantastic Wisborough Green atmosphere! Over 500 runners completed the 10 and 5k races with 200 children completing the colour run. We’re still totting up the numbers but expect to have raised £5,000 towards the new sports pavilion which is a fantastic result. The 10k was won by Luke Burgess of Horsham Blue Star Harriers in a new course record time of 35:08 which is also a record time for a junior runner. The 5k was won by Sandy McDougall of Haslemere Border AC in a time of 18:27 which smashed the ladies record. Village runners put in some great times with Pete O’Connell leading the way with first place in the male V55 a great fourth place in the 21

5k followed by two fantastic times for junior runners Leon Kilford and Jacob Ball in 13th and 16th place respectively. This year the race was started by Mrs M A Fleming, Deputy Head of Christ’s Hospital School our headline sponsor. We would like to thank all our sponsors for their invaluable support especially Christ’s

Hospital, Bluecoats Sports and Lynn Murray Solicitors. Next year’s race is pencilled in for the 12th of May and details will be available on our website in due course. All results and the chance to buy photos of the day (just £3) are also on www.runwisborough.co.uk. Lastly, and most importantly, the race organisers would like to thank the 50+ villagers who helped out on the day, the support of residents along the route, everyone who ran and all those who came out and cheered. Talented Young Footballer Fynn Talley in year 10 at The Weald School is showing great promise with his outstanding goalkeeping skills in football. He joined Brighton and Hove Albion football club in September 2017, and was offered a long term contract and scholarship which will commence when he leaves school, allowing him to pursue his ambition of becoming a professional footballer. Fynn currently represents England at u16 level (a year above his actual age group). He has played in numerous competitions and tournaments over the past four years and when he played for the Arsenal u14s in 2017, his team won the Albert Phelan Cup. He was in the squad for games against Turkey and Romania in August 2017 and for the Nike International Tournament in Florida in December against the USA, Brazil and the Netherlands, making his debut and winning his first cap against the Netherlands. Finn has won a Set for Success award this year. Set for Success is a Horsham district charity that aims to encourage and support young sports people in achieving their goals of becoming champions of the future. He was nominated by Mr Healy, head of Livingstone house and u19 football manager at The Weald School, who said “Fynn has worked incredibly hard in the last three years and this is clearly paying off. Fynn has natural talent, but also has a drive and determination that has taken him to the next level.” Fynn will be attending the Set for Success presentation evening in the autumn of this year.

Hello. It’s me, TAILS. One of the OUT AND ABOUTER REPORTER FROM THE CAT AND RABBIT RESCUE. Lots happening down here at the moment. New building works nearly finished. There has been lots of racket over the past few months. Not good for a cat that likes to get plenty of rest. Today has been sheer bliss. Me and my mates have been laying out in the sun and enjoying life without being surrounded by mud. One of our carers here, Laura, left recently to have a baby. We organised a sweepstake, guessing the weight of the baby and whether it was a girl or a boy. I did have a guess but unfortunately I was wrong. Markus the office cat guessed 5lb 10ozs, which was correct and he has been going on about it ever since. He is sending the baby some Dreamies even though everyone has told him that human babies just don’t eat Dreamies. Hopefully he will buy me some as I do love them mixed with a bit of fresh chicken. The ladies here have started getting ready for the Big Open day on August 12th. Looking for unwanted wine!! etc etc for the bottle stall. They asked me to tell you all that we would be grateful for any donations which can be collected if you contact us. We have had quite a few unwanted cats brought in today, which is sad. We are always looking for nice homes for our rescued cats to go to. Please ring my staff if you think you can offer a loving home. Thank you for reading my letter, and I look forward to chatting to you again soon. I am including a picture of Markus with his winnings!! We rehome by appointment 7 days a week, following a pre home visit by one of our home visitors. If you feel you can give a home to one of our rescued cats, rabbits or guinea pigs please call us on 01243 641409 between 9am and 4pm, MONDAY TO FRIDAY. A Very Special Family Service A very special family communion service was held on Sunday 17 June in the Cirque Normandie’s Big Top on the Green. It was Cirque Normandie’s last day in Wisborough Green (although, of course, they are based here) and the Big Top became our place of worship for the 10.30am service which included the baptism of Nina & Dan's son Russell. It was a lovely experience and many thanks to Cirque Normandie for the use of their Big Top.

GREATEST SUMMER FESTIVAL EVER! This year’s Wisborough Green Primary School Summer Festival was surely one to remember, if not the greatest ever! I am not being boastful when I use these words, but referring to the extra special ingredient that we were lucky enough to enjoy – the presence of Cirque Normandie and their incredible Circus for Schools programme. Celebrating not only 250 years of British circus, but also this term’s school topic, this year’s Summer Festival included a week long programme of activity. It kicked off with an official blessing of the Big Top by the Reverend Clive Jenkins (pictured right), free circus skills workshops for all of the children, not only from Wisborough Green School, but also Plaistow and Ifold Primary School and Climbing Bears and then culminated in four fantastic performances by Cirque Normandie including hilarious clowns, breath taking acrobats, incredible jugglers and awe inspiring aerialists. But most of all we enjoyed the presence of a very special group of people – the stuff that inspires and makes dreams, and for (Continued on page 26)

THE GREATEST SUMM (Continued from page 25)

that we cannot thank Cirque Normandie enough. To Tolly, Nina, Ed and your entire amazing crew, we say a whole hearted thank you for this unique experience. We hope you enjoyed your experience on home turf and we hope to see you again very soon. We also thank you for this opportunity to add to our fundraising efforts through your generous donation from ticket sales, and hope that your Circus for Schools programme continues to inspire a new generation of performers. Festival day itself was generously supported by so many local businesses and the local community in general. The children of Wisborough Green Primary School and their somewhat exhausted PTA would like to say a very big thank you to you too. We hope you enjoyed the day and we would like to say a particular thank you to Churchill Equestrian Properties for sponsoring the occasion. We’ll report back with our fundraising total and plans for spending it very soon. Meantime here are a few pictures of the week. Heidi Lang

Messy Church June 2018 St Peter’s Messy Church met on 7th June in the Village Hall after school. The theme was Jesus leaving his disciples forty days after the Resurrection (the Ascension) and telling them to, ‘go tell all people everywhere’ (fits on fingers of left hand) ‘I am with you always’ (on fingers of right hand). We are not expected to do this alone and Jesus sends the Holy Spirit which came as flames of fire and a rushing wind to the disciples at Pentecost and still helps us today. Mountains were created, a windmill, a ‘world’ lantern as we thought about Jesus being the light and hope in our world, bracelets, prayer paper chains and more! Gill led us on the piano with worship, while the tables were laid. Fish fingers and chips, followed by jelly and ice cream were enjoyed by everyone before going home! The next session of Messy Church will be a summer holiday special In the Vicarage Garden on Wednesday 22nd August at 2pm ending with tea at 5pm

Time for God - The 2018 World Cup 30

The second Sunday of June was an exploration of ‘the laws of the game’. The activities included dressing a football figure in a strip of your choice, decorating an England biscuit, colouring an England bookmark and moulding a World Cup Trophy of your design.

Clive talked us through the Ten Commandments, using our hands to enable us to remember each one. The link between the Ten Commandments and the laws of football worked very well and caused much discussion afterwards!

St Peter's Open Gardens 2018 Despite thunderstorms having been forecast, the late May bank holiday weekend was blessed with warm, sunny weather bringing record numbers of people to our Open Gardens here in Wisborough Green. The variety and the high standard of the gardens ensured everyone visiting was delighted by what they saw. They chatted to the owners, learning about and admiring the beautiful plants and designs and then were able to enjoy a welcome cup of tea and delicious piece of cake served in the cool of the church by the 'tea shop girls' appropriately dressed in early 20th century outfits.

31

A huge thank you to everyone who opened their gardens and for all their hard work and for all who put up signs, served teas, washed up, sold tickets or stewarded gardens. Also a big thank you to all who attended and helped us raise just over ÂŁ3100 for church funds. Helen Vause More pictures overleaf

Recipe of the Month Elderflower and Lemon Drizzle Cake This month’s recipe is just a variation of one of the UK’s most popular cakes, good ol’ Lemon Drizzle Cake! The addition of elderflower cordial, poured over the still warm baked cake, is just delicious! Even better if you’ve got some home-brewed cordial from local elderflower; I make a batch every year as am lucky enough to have elderflower growing in my garden so easy pickings! .

Ingredients       

225g/8oz butter, softened 225g/8oz caster sugar 4 large eggs 225g/8oz self-raising flour, sifted Zest and juice of 1 lemon 100ml/4 fl oz Elderflower cordial 2 tablespoons granulated sugar

Method 1. Preheat the oven to 180 C/Fan 160 C/Gas Mark 4. Grease a 20cm round, deep loose-based tin and line the base with baking parchment. 2. Place the butter, sugar and lemon zest in a large bowl. Use an electric whisk to beat the butter and sugar together until they are pale and fluffy. Gradually add the 33 eggs, whisking well between additions and adding 2 tablespoons of the flour with the last egg (this will prevent the mixture curdling). 3. Sift over the remaining flour, then gently fold this in with a metal spoon along with 2 tablespoons of hot water. Spoon into the prepared tin, level the surface and bake for 45-50 minutes or until it is shrinking away from the sides of the tin. A fine skewer inserted in the centre should come out clean. Cool in the tin for 5 minutes. 4. Squeeze the lemon juice over a sieve into a jug and stir in the cordial. Use the fine skewer to prick the warm cake all over, pour over the lemon and elderflower syrup and then sprinkle over the sugar. It should sink in but leave a crunchy crust. Leave to cool completely, before removing the cake from the tin. Serve in wedges. (Recipe Courtesy of www.goodtoknow.co.uk)

Wisborough Green History - Ministry of Information Last month showed stills from a MOI training film made in the early days of the Second World War that was filmed in Kirdford Road just past the Cricketers crossroads. It showed a group of Home Guard soldiers using the wrong technique to stop a suspicious looking car that resulted in them getting shot when a hidden gunman emerged from the back. This, the concluding part of the film, shows the right way to do it . . .

Soldiers at the ready positioned where there is now a footpath. They are covering the approaching car while curious villagers hover in the background. 36

The Home Guard sergeant indicates that the car should halt.

The car is brought to a halt and the driver is ordered to get out..

n Filming in Wisborough Green - Part 2 (Concluded)

The driver is held at gunpoint, while a soldier examines the car and its documents.

37

A man is discovered hiding under the back seat and emerges at gunpoint.

. . . and is arrested to be detained together with the driver.

Update Boxal Bridge Having met the April 30th deadline to comment on the application made by West Sussex County Council to De-list Boxal Bridge, Historic buildings consultant Haig Dalton (commissioned by Kirdford Parish Council) suggested that we might hear the outcome of the Dept of Digital, Cultural, Media and Sport deliberations in some 2 months time i.e. the end of June. News is still awaited. Jill Sutcliffe, Chair KKWG, 01403 700395 or jillsutcliffe1@gmail.com

The Parishes Wildlife Group MAGICAL MEADOWS VISIT - Following a marvellous talk about meadows given by Jane and Michael Joseph in the Wisborough Green Village Hall in March, they kindly invited the group to visit in mid June. After a long spell of settled dry weather inevitably, perhaps, the day dawned damp. Our hosts responded accordingly met us with refreshments and an introductory talk before running through a couple of short films made by their eldest son of both the meadow and gardening with wildlife in mind. The first sight on arrival in the garden was a bullfinch; swallows have taken up residence and the pond is a hot spot for Great Crested Newts. A combination of a wet spring had not provided a good start for the meadow. On top of that some heavy rain had laid some of it low and in some places the more aggressive grasses like Yorkshire fog which appears rather mauve when there's a lot of it had taken over. Nonetheless Common spotted orchids were common along with Yellow rattle, Oxeye Daisy and Betony which has leaves edges like a pie! The Meadowsweet round the pond used to be used to offset some rather unpleasant smells in medieval times when bodies were laid under the floor in churches and Lady's bedstraw was put into mattresses for similar reasons, that is, a rather sweeter smell! What a treasure Jane and Michael have created. Not only is there a wealth of different plants but in turn this provides food for many insects. After the mid morning rain when the sun started to appear immediately butterflies, dragonflies and other flying insects emerged and bees could be heard buzzing. 97% of the UK's meadows disappeared and such restoration is urgently required. A lot of work is involved but with such excellent results. Jill Sutcliffe, Parishes Wildlife Group, Email: jillsutcliffe1@gmail.com or Tel: 01403 700395

Wisborough Green Horticultural Society By the time you read this the June Show will have been and gone - the results will feature in the August edition of Ad Vincula. The Open Gardens organised by the Church for their funds was very successful helped by lovely weather (in spite of changing weather forecasts!). As an adjunct to that we held a supplementary plant sale at Fernlea that did very well and raised another £350! Regrettably we had to cancel the trip to Wakehurst through lack of numbers. However............... We are having our car sharing visit to Parham Gardens on Friday 10 th August. Please make a note in your diary if you would like to come. We will meet at the Village Hall (WG) at 2pm and go on from there. Entry is £9 (£8 seniors) but if you are an RHS member it is free for the named person.

The Gardener’s Calendar

by Ian Clemens

 Dead-head annuals and perennials to avoid self-seeding and to encourage prolonged flowering.  Take cuttings from your favourite tender plants for overwintering indoors. Cuttings can also still be taken from shrubs and herbaceous perennials.  Keep an eye out for pests on plants, early treatment is best.  Pinch out tomato side shoots each week. Cut off any leaves growing below the lowest ripening fruit trusses to improve air circulation and prevent diseases. Feed weekly with diluted tomato fertiliser.  Start harvesting garlic and overwintered onions, freeing up ground for other crops. I’ll be planting my late flowering Dahlias in these beds.  Harvest marrows and courgettes regularly to encourage a continued supply.  Watch for blackfly on your broad beans, pinching out affected growing tips.  Spray tomato plants and potato foliage with Bordeaux mixture to prevent blight. Take a look at www.blightwatch.co.uk where you can register for blight warnings in your area.  Use untreated grass clippings as a mulch around most vegetables plants to suppress weed growth. They will eventually rot in and help feed your crops.  Peg down runners on your strawberry plants to provide more plants for next year. If you don't need extra plants simply remove the strawberry runners completely.  Prune your plum, apricot, peach and cherry trees now. Pruning these species in the summer reduces the risk of these trees getting silver leaf disease.  Check the leaves of gooseberry bushes for sawfly larvae, which can completely strip the foliage in a matter of days. Jet them off with water or pick them off by hand.

Wisborough Green FARMERS MARKETplus News

Next Market: Thursday 12th July 2018 Wisborough Green Village Hall 9.00am – 12.30pm June Market: The morning weather was not kind to the outside stallholders who braved showers and winds to set up their stalls. Ian Clemens and his daughter, Emma, sold a good quantity of their quality home grown vegetables and plants. Gary Harvey was cooking up his turkey sausages etc and The Fresh Fish Shop, from Haywards Heath, took up their usual position selling a wide variety of fish, shell fish, crab etc. Unfortunately WG Primary School could not be with us as planned this month, but will be at the market in July. In the hall, as well as our regular stalls selling Fair Trade, woollen items, health products and pottery, bread and grains, cheese, meat, linseed and hand-made chocolates, we also saw the return of new comers Jubylee Bakes, and their wonderful cakes and slices, and Katie Wells with her lovely paintings. June’s ‘guest stall’ was the WG Minibus promoting their regular door-to-door shopping trip service and popular day excursions to interesting places. July Market: Another new stallholder for the July market - local craft maker Celeste Osmaston will be 47 selling her hand made bags and cushions, made from fabrics she has dyed herself. We will also see the return of regular stallholders, Bejewelled and Bags of Choice. The WG Primary School will be with us taking 2 stalls as part of their studies. Do come and browse the stalls or just sit and enjoy a cup of Macmillan tea or coffee with a piece of their excellent cake, meet new friends or just watch the world go by. If your village organisation would like to take one of the market’s monthly free of charge stalls to promote your club, or an event, please contact Ray Vernalls on 01403 701004 or wisboroughmarket@gmail.com Follow us on social media for updates, photographs and market chat: Facebook: www.facebook.com/WisboroughGreenFarmersandVillageMarket Instagram: www.instagram.com/wisboroughmarket Twitter: www.twitter.com @WGvillagemarket

Did you know? If you make a 999 call for an ambulance, you’re more than likely be contacted first by a BEAT first responder………. “BEAT (Billingshurst Emergency Assistance Team) is a group of volunteer Community First Responders who are trained and monitored by South East Coast Ambulance Service. We provide a quick response to life-threatening 999 emergencies and are able to provide vital first aid treatment prior to the arrival of an ambulance. In rural areas a local Responder can often be on scene much sooner, with equipment that can greatly improve the patient’s chance of survival.”

For more info see website: www.beatresponders.org.uk

WI Report If you were at our last W.I. meeting on the 7 th June then you will know why I am writing this report with my shoes off, a glass of warm lemon water at my side and a banana and apple in each hand. I’m not sure I can remember everything that Helen Prosper, our speaker told us, but with her help my gut bacteria will be dancing with joy and multiplying in huge amounts. My energy levels will be up and my skin will possibly shine, so here’s to leafy green vegetables and out with hidden sugars (if I can find them!). Thank you Helen. We are visiting Architectural Plants at Pulborough for our July meeting on the 5 th. We meet at the nursery at 6.30pm for an arranged tour and afterwards, those of us who have pre-booked, will have a light supper (paid for personally). Please let Mary know if you need transport. All potential members are welcome. Sue Nicholls Mary Benson (President) 01403 700284

Weather Watch Wisborough Green rainfall for May was 113mm (last year 82mm – 10 yr average 5mm). The extra rainfall compared to last year was largely due to that huge downfall on May 31st. In under an hour we had up to 50mm in the village – have never seen the Green with so much water on it!

It was the warmest May since records began more than 100 yrs ago. Maximum temperature for the month - 28.7°C was recorded at Northolt (London) and the minimum was minus 4.6°C at Aboyne (Aberdeenshire). It was the sunniest May since 1989. The Met Office reported that the weather for Spring 2018 (March/April/May) had been “very dynamic with many fluctuations”. I think we can all agree on that! Weathervane
