Pastoral Letter Luke Chapter 22, verse 19 “Do this in remembrance of me.” Over recent weeks, as a nation, we have been remembering many of the major events of WW1, from the naval Battle of Jutland, to the preSomme diversion assault, that has been called ‘The Day Sussex Died’ which was led in part by men from the Royal Sussex Regiment. On July 1 st 1916 the Battle of the Somme commenced and continued throughout the summer that year. This year it was commemorated by volunteers and actors who staged around the country in city centres and town squares, a silent tribute to the men who lost their lives on that first day, culminating in singing a WW1 song “We’re here because we’re here”. Many members of the public were moved by their presence 100 years on. Commemorations are important, both corporately and individually for a variety of different reasons to help us remember, reflect and act. On Sunday August 7 th, we shall have a special service to remember the ‘Dieppe Raid’ that took place in August 1942. We will remember those who died, those who were captured and those who returned, who themselves, two years later, began the liberation of Nazi occupied Europe. It is a privilege to be able to recognise those from overseas, particularly from Canada and the USA, who led that assault, and the families and friends who attend St. Peter’s each year at this time to remember their sacrifice. Christianity also remembers as the central act of worship, Jesus’ celebration of the Last Supper. St Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians, chapter 11, verse 26 “For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.” For on the night of His betrayal Jesus did something unique with His friends who had gathered to celebrate the Jewish festival of Passover. He instituted, not just a meal, but a sign, a symbol and a seal that through the simple fayre of bread and wine, we can participate with Christian believers around the world, an act that draws the past, the present and the future together as we wait expectantly for Jesus’ return. Simple, yet profound, this act of celebrating Holy Communion can take place in lofty Cathedrals, led by Bishops and choirs; in the open, around a desert air strip in Africa; or in the paddy fields of Asia or the jungles of South America. This act of commemoration takes place here at St. Peter’s in the village on Sundays and Wednesdays (please see Church Calendar) to which you are warmly invited. Clive and Marion

Arundel to Brighton Walk - Dame Vera Lynn Children's charity On Saturday 17th September we will be ‘walking from Arundel to Brighton in aid of The Dame Vera Lynn Children’s Charity which supports babies and children with Cerebral Palsy. With two walk distances available of 35km (around 8-9 hours) or 12km (around 2-3 hours) you can choose what would be suitable for you and still enjoy the staggeringly beautiful views and scenery which Sussex has to offer. Starting from the spectacular Arundel Castle, the walk will span across the magnificent landscape of the South Downs before finishing at Devil’s Dyke on the outskirts of Brighton. Not only will this be a memorable occasion for everyone taking part, it also provides an ideal opportunity for you to do something fantastic with friends, colleagues and/or family. The event is open to everyone who likes walking or just fancies a challenge. Wisborough Green Primary School News I canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really believe a school year has passed since I wrote my first update for the AdVinc! It is hard to decide what to say, as it certainly feels like there has been a lifetime of events that I should mention. Being part of the Wisborough Green community is an honour. To work with children who are kind hearted, considerate of others and bright individuals with many talents to offer, makes me feel very proud. The staff has worked tirelessly to give the children the best experiences possible to prepare them for a successful future. The spectacular Alice in Wonderland production not only showcased the individuals who can act, sing, dance and play musical instruments, working in unity radiated through. I am so proud of every individual who was involved in the production and we really did bring the West End to our beautiful little village.

Our sports week was another huge success which ended in a fantastic day of singing, dancing and racing â&#x20AC;&#x201C; even the sun managed to shine down on us all day. We won the Mini Olympics competition held in our locality and were overall winners at District Sports, with three of our children winning the title for their year group. Well done to Phoebe (Y4), Mia (Y6) and Archie (Y6) for a great achievement.

Taking on the challenge of the Billingshurst Rotary Club garden competition was another huge project we took on this year. Our garden has been transformed and we achieved an amazing second place, winning ÂŁ50 for the EcoWarriors to spend. Well done to everyone who has supported this project, our garden is an environment where the children love to learn and play. (Continued on page 13)

To top off a fantastic year, I would like to thank the outstanding PTA for raising significant funds for the children this year. I have never met a group of individuals quite so committed to a school and success oozes from their fingertips! We have enjoyed an amazing new library this year and will be purchasing ipads, laptops and a large screen for the hall next term. Such a great achievement for a small school – well done! I would personally like to wish everyone a relaxing break, one that is truly deserved. I look forward to another year filled with adventure and a love of learning. What matters to you? Survey 5th July - 30th August 2016 Every February West Sussex County Council sets its budget for the forthcoming year. Over 821,000 residents use our services, which are worth over £500m, so it is very important for us to find out ‘what matters’ to our residents, their families and their communities - and take their views into account when we are planning the services we deliver and our budget. In 2014 you may remember that we ran a public survey (What Matters to You) asking residents to tell us what their priorities are to help us shape the services we deliver and more importantly the budget for the coming year. The County Council used this feedback to shape the Future West Sussex Plan and our budget for the last two cycles. On the 5th July 2016, we launched the ‘What Matters to You’ survey to get an update from our residents on their priorities and again use this to support our discussion and to help us shape services within our three overarching priority areas; Start of Life, Later Life and Economy. The County Council faces significant challenges ahead, especially around how we pay for services. It’s vital our focus reflects what our residents want and need, whilst letting us know how much they are willing to pay for the services they regard as important to them, their community and the future of West Sussex. I would encourage local residents, friends and family to complete this survey. The more people who complete the survey and share their opinions, the more opportunity we have to ensure we best reflect our residents’ views when we set the budget for the forthcoming year and following year (2017-2019). This goes a long way in helping us. The Survey will run from 1st July – 30th August 2016 and can be found on: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/campaigns/what-matters-to-you/. Nature Notes We’re hoping for some hay this year, and I spotted one or two ragwort plants in our little field. I went in and pulled them up before they could set seed. They can be toxic in hay. Doing a last careful check round, I suddenly came upon a dark brown mound in the long grass. (I had a daft moment wondering how a cowpat had got in there!) One step closer and I heard buzzing. It was a swarm of bees – deep in the grass! We’ve had one in a tree in the past, but this was a real surprise. I decided to leave them alone, hoping they’d move on somewhere safer. But they were still there next day, so Peter put me in touch with beekeeper Raymond. He confirmed that they were honey bees, and brought down a traditional “skep” – a darkish dome of tight-knit straw which he placed over them. He’s since told me they all went straight up into it. To warm up probably, he said. The skep stayed in place until dusk, and then he fastened a board under it and took them away in his car. He thought it was one of the easiest swarms he’d collected, and that it was relatively small – about 5.000 bees. It looked a lot to my ignorant eyes, but apparently a prime swarm can be around 20,000! He also said the queen was most likely to be inexperienced, and that’s why they ended up amongst the grass. The good news is that they’ve settled well, and Raymond plans to unite them with a colony among his hives that has no queen, so forming a new larger colony and saving the queenless bees. Good news all round. Many thanks to Raymond, and I wish them well in their new home. More good news. A barn owl is back in Carters fields and it’s been seen hunting. We don’t yet know if there’s a brood nearby, but fingers crossed. AND – hold the front page - a turtle dove was heard In Plaistow last week. We’ve also had a report of one in Kirdford. Fantastic news! They are now extremely rare. A group of swifts has been feeding high above us as we walk our ancient dogs, the woodpecker babies, with their dashing red foreheads now beginning to fade, are costing us a fortune in peanuts, our starlings are still with us, and other garden birds are doing well. Marbled white butterflies have been feeding on thistles, and I’ve seen encouraging numbers of other butterflies in the fields now, with a good range of species, meadow browns, speckled woods, commas, gatekeepers, and small tortoiseshells. As I walked amongst them recently, I recalled Rosemary Traherne’s delight as we took that same path years ago. She it was who roped me in to doing these notes with her. A lovely lady and a true nature lover. This Red Admiral - on the onions I was drying in the sun - is for her! Sue J 15

Survival in Dracula Country! The Rarau Mountain Challenge Eight of us survived the trek through Transylvania's mountains, and Dracula did not bite any of us. We all completed our trek of 60 miles through the Carpathian Mountains. Guided by Doro, our local guide, we walked through forests and pastures on slippery tracks (where there were tracks to follow!), and slipped down steep slopes trying to avoid collision with trees or trip over roots. As we traversed pastures we needed to beware of packs of huge Carpathian Mountain dogs, bred to protect livestock, on the farms, from bears and wolves. The weather was at first very wet, but by the end was hot and sunny. Fortunately we only carried a day pack, overnight luggage was taken on by road for us. My fellow trekkers were a cheerful, friendly group. Their good nature and humour proved to be invaluable. There were no injuries but many in the group suffered blisters and the suction from the deep mud ripped the sole from one unfortunate trekkers boot. Amazingly, a lady in our group produced a roll of parcel tape which enabled him to hobble to a road for pick-up by our mini-bus. After the trek we visited the projects that the charity (Link to Hope) supports â&#x20AC;&#x201C; this made a very big impression on me. I realise more than ever now how important the work of the charity is. We visited a kindergarten for children from a shanty town in the city of Lasi. I didn't expect to find such a place in Europe. In Moldova, we visited the village of Dancu, where Link to Hope supports the work of the local Baptist church. In our party of trekkers, we were privileged to include an Englishman who had been a pastor in the village previously. His knowledge and language skills were most appreciated by us. We saw a dairy cooperative, carpentry training facility and youth club property amongst other successful projects. I was very moved when I helped deliver food parcels to impoverished old people in the area. One lady hugged me as we left. Overall, challenging as it was, I found the trip rewarding and enlightening, and also, dare I say, for much of the time enjoyable. WG Horticultural Society Trip to Having passed under the archway (designed by Sir Hugh Casson) at the entrance to the estate and had our first glimpse of the glorious parkland that surrounds Polesden Lacey, one of the National Trust’s most visited properties, the first stop for most of us was to one of the two cafes for coffee. Then armed with our maps of the house and garden some of us went straight to the house for an introductory guided tour of the main rooms and the others for a guided tour of the formal gardens. Polesden Lacey was the country home of Margaret Greville who rose from obscure origins to attain political influence and great wealth. She was a great hostess and entertained princes, maharajas, high ranking politicians, captains of industry and royalty, the future Queen Mother and George VI spent part of their honeymoon there. The house became the perfect setting for pleasure and leisure, for gossip and discreet dalliance amongst the upper classes. Perhaps the most famous room at Polesden is The Saloon. Mrs Greville had a sumptuous carved and panelled salone from an early 18th century Italian palace installed, the gilded panelling is inset with red brocade. This room contains some of Mrs Greville’s prized possessions. On leaving the house we were greeted by a very heavy downpour, (one of several thoughout the day) and took refuge under the portico on the South Terrace and enjoyed the wonderful views beyond the South Lawn to Ranmore Woods and Common and Box Hill to the east. On route to The Rose Garden we passed the pet cemetery and then Mrs Greville’s own grave in front of four terracotta statues of the four seasons. The entrance to the Rose Garden is flanked by a pair of stone griffins.

The planting is mostly early 20th century in style with soft pastel roses and the pergolas bear Edwardian rambling roses and borders contain shrub roses, geraniums, lavender and fuschias.

We then came to a smaller garden with peony borders, a little bedraggled because of the rain but still with some beautiful specimens.

On to the Lavender and Iris gardens and then the productive, kitchen and cut flower gardens. Mrs Greville liked the house to be filled with flowers when she was in residence and also to have fruit and vegetables for the table. The heated glasshouses were fuelled by 30-40 tons of coke a year and were used to force exotic fruit and vegetables as well as propagate up to 2000 annuals every year. Unfortunately the weather continued to be unkind and after lunch we retreated to the house for a more detailed look around. We missed out most of the leisure gardens and didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t walk the Long Walk or the Nuns Walk but they will be there to visit another day. Wisborough Green Sports News Football Club No league news yet for next season but I think the 1st XI will be playing in the Brickability West Sussex Premier League. 2 nd XI will remain in Division 4 North same as last year. Award day was held early July where awards were given for performances last year. Update on plans for the Village Hall

Village Hall News

Earlier this year the Hall Committee engaged a structural engineer to report on the condition of the main fabric of the Hall in order to establish any significant defects that might affect our ability to carry out any modernisation that is required. I am pleased to say that the engineerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s report found that the Hall is in good condition overall for its age with a few minor problems that would need remedying as and when. The main issue noted is that the roofing timbers above the main hall would need to be strengthened and/or replaced if significant alteration is to be made to the space above. Our architect has now completed the set of formal drawings of the Hall building and is actively working on some sketch ideas of some of the improvements that it would be feasible for us to make. As I wrote in my article in the May Ad Vincula, it is important that the community is consulted about any plans and has a real opportunity to influence what changes and improvements are eventually put in place. There will be a more formal consultation process, but the Fete on 29 th August provides an early opportunity for the community to provide feedback on ideas and priorities for the Hall. Look out for the History Society tent where there will be an exhibition of the history of the Hall together with the latest drawings and sketches of ideas for the future. This is your village hall and we want to ensure that it continues to meet your needs, so please do come along and have a look and provide your ideas and comments. More information about the formal consultation process will follow in due course. I also have some good news on the finances for the Hall. Thanks to a most generous bequest from Laurence and Pat Knight, the Hall Committee has received a substantial sum which will go a long way towards funding the changes that need to be made. Laurence and Pat, like many villagers, were frequent visitors to the Hall, particularly enjoying the regular Lunch Club, and recognising what an important role the Hall plays in bringing the community together. Village ‘Moans & Groans’ Page Well another month seems to have passed very quickly. I am not sure if it is the terrible weather or the fantastic selection of sport on the TV that has kept me indoors over the last month - perhaps a mixture of the two. Congratulations to all of the Welsh in the village for reaching the Quarter finals at the Euros. (Remember the English did beat you in the knock out stage.) First a Moan from me. This is meant to be an interactive Moans and Groans page with some input from you, the villagers - a chance to have your say in the village. All I have had are several more comments on the page but no moans and groans. Are we all happy with everything in the village? Having pushed my Granddaughter around the village several times in the last month a big thank you to those of you who have trimmed their hedges and swept their paths and cut the verges in front of their properties, Still several more in the village centre to be done. I am sure nobody wants to force children and prams into the road because their hedge is overhanging the footpath. Another moan from me. I notice that the grass around the trees and seats on the green has been weed killed and I understand why but I really don't think it looks great when the rest of the green and village are looking so good. Several people have mentioned DOG fouling around the green and down the New Pound road. If you have a DOG or DOGS under your control please pick up and dispose correctly DON'T leave it for people to tread in. If you see somebody leaving it please ask them to pick it up. Remember to report those potholes in the roads and paths around the village or they won't be repaired before winter. It's easy to walk past but just take out your mobile, take a picture, then upload this to the web site at: https://www.westsussex.gov.uk/ roads-and-travel/report-a-problem-with-a-road-or-pavement Come on, let's get them repaired before they become a problem. My final moan this month comes from 7 year old Isobel and her 5 year old brother Harry. Small children pick up this from watching people and then copy so let's keep everybody safe, especially the small children, and use the crossing. Ken V

The weather has been kind to crops so far, but ….? Will the gardeners of WG be brave again and put in what did well? Everyone enjoys seeing new competitors. Be brave, enter. Those who do have a deep experience awaiting them. An experience of anxiety and tension and satisfaction even a possibility of joy at the end. Above all there will be such stories to tell and laugh about later. Please put in as many entries as you can. It is a real commitment to being part of this community by taking part and joining in a traditional English village Show. The Show Schedule is at the Village Shop so you know precisely what you could put in. There is really helpful information at the back to maximise your entries' performance as well as plenty of tips and advice. All members have these Schedules, but if mislaid, then they can be bought at WG Stores from behind the counter. You do have to ask! Non members from anywhere can also enter lots of classes, just get a Schedule. So if your friend out of the Village is a marvel at flower arranging, make a day of it and give WG entrants a bit of competition. Do browse through the Schedule and find something to enter. None of our gardens have exactly the same growing conditions, be it soil, shelter, aspect, shade or being under the right rain cloud at the right time. So you could be the one with the best..... … because you had the best conditions this year. What about odd shaped vegetables to be judged by junior horticulturalists. Perhaps three spikes of gladioli or six runner beans? May be a hand made card for a special anniversary? A happy Together photograph? For Juniors only – design or create a mobile phone case or another entry could be designing a dress or football strip. What about a gingerbread from the given recipe? Newcomers to showing in particular are welcome. Be brave, enter. The box for entry slips will be on the fence of the The Old Forge by the toilets at the side of the Green. Local Wildlife Event Bats fly around the village at dusk and this area contains some rare species. We would like to find out which types are making use of the village including the pond and hedgerows. The Parishes Wildlife Group will meet at the Three Crowns pub, located on the A272 in the middle of the village of Wisborough Green, Friday August 12th at 8pm to listen to a talk about bats given by Jane Willmott from the Sussex Wildlife Trust. Recipe of the Month

Easy Homemade Mayonnaise I love Mayonnaise, especially at this time of the year with cold salmon, asparagus and new potatoes and homemade is so much better than the stuff you can buy in jars. It is so easy to make if you have a food processor or electric whisk and will keep for a month in a jar in the fridge, assuming it lasts that long! Olive oil gives a firmer consistency than sunflower oil and also has a stronger flavour, so use either one or a combination of the two to taste. Ingredients  1 whole egg  1 to 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar/ lemon juice  1 teaspoon Dijon mustard  1/4 teaspoon each of salt and pepper  1/2 pint olive/sunflower oil or a combination of the two Method 1. Crack a large egg into a food processor or a bowl if you're using an electric whisk and add the vinegar, mustard, salt and pepper. 2. Whizz this up until mixed well. 3. Very slowly trickle the oil into the egg mixture with the processor/whisk running all of the time. 4. The mayonnaise should then be ready to use once all of the oil has been incorporated. If you would like a thicker consistency slowly add more oil until it is as you wish. If it's too thick a small amount of boiling water can be added to let it down. 5. Taste the mayonnaise and add more seasoning if needed. Helen V

Wisborough Green History - FROM This article concludes the story of our village hall from its beginnings as a poorhouse in the early 1700s to being a vital facility for the village's activities. The village hall was opened in 1956 after its conversion in two stages from its usage as a workhouse, flats and canteen. By 1973, it was felt that the main hall wasn't wide enough for the events held there, so it was decided to widen the hall and to provide a bar and additional toilets and so a third phase of village hall rebuilding started in 1976. Grants were given in March 1976 and work was begun by Allfreys Builders in June that year. The work involved widening the main hall by demolishing the lower part of the south wall and supporting the upper part of the wall by a 60’ long girder supported by columns. The first photo shows the demolition having just taken place; the windows on

the north side can be seen through the sheets of polythene that protected the interior. The single-storey flat roofed extension was then added to this, thus widening the hall. The bar area was also added at this time. It reopened in March 1977. The work had cost £14,000 of which £4,200 was raised by the village. Still being £1,500 short, the balance was covered by the sale of the reading room. The second photo shows the new south wall being built; the windows are already in position. In 1979 Eric Clark decided that he did not wish to have the company’s office in his home so he rented the Vine Room (the old doctors’ surgery at the west end of the hall), but he vacated the room after a few years and relocated his office to a portable cabin at Wisborough Lodge. Unfortunately I don't know the date - anyone? In 1984, Bettina Wyatt decided that the two flats (see last month's issue) should be combined to become the present maisonette as her sister had intended originally. Grace Stewart became the tenant in April that year until she vacated it in 2015; the dwelling was then extensively renovated. After the flats were vacated when the south wing was condemned in 1952, the Committee Room that had been flat 3's sitting room was used as a public library. It was run by Diana Trestrail then by Doris Cardiss for a couple of afternoons a week. The (Continued on page 33)

books were stored on shelves in built-in open-fronted cupboards on the south wall and the right hand part of the east wall. The cupboards were protected with wire mesh fronted doors that were able to be locked to secure the books when the room was being used for other purposes. When used as a library, the librarian sat at a small table in the right hand corner as seen from the door. Does anyone have a photo of the library please? In 1962 the WSCC mobile library service started and spread to all parts of the county. When the mobile library started in the village in June 1971 its first stop was in Balchin's Lane (at that time it was an unmade approach road to the builders H Balchin Ltd. on Tuesday 29th June from 3.35 to 4.20pm. It made a second stop at the Cricketers on Friday 9th July from 11.30am to 12.05pm. Thereafter they alternated every fortnight; nowadays its fortnightly visits are by the pavilion, each lasting only 20 minutes. This potential duplication caused the Committee Room library to close on 21 st June that year. Although the library books were removed, the cupboards where the books had been kept were not removed until the early 1990s. Apart from its use as a library, the room was (and still is) used for all types of meetings, e.g. the monthly parish council meetings. Although it is still known as the Committee Room, I have no idea or the origins of this name. Anyone? The room now contains filing drawers that are used to store the archives of the parish council and certain groups. A separate cupboard is used to store crockery for the WI and other users. This ends the story of the village hall from its quite different beginnings three hundred years ago. The articles seem to have gone on for ever but were only (!) started in September 2013 and with some sizeable breaks too. Next month, something quite different. Richard B. 33

The Gardener’s Calendar

 Keep everything well watered especially during prolonged dry spells and don’t forget to feed plants with a general purpose liquid fertiliser.  Continue to dead-head annuals and perennials to avoid self-seeding and to encourage prolonged flowering.  Stake tall or top heavy Dahlias and Lilies to prevent wind and rain damage.  Prune summer flowering shrubs once they have finished blooming.  Collect ripened seed and store for next year.  Continue to feed tomato plants with a tomato fertiliser and remove leaves lower down on the plant to help with air circulation and prevent disease.  Cut back herbs now to encourage a new flush of tasty leaves that you can harvest before the first frosts. Dry or freeze your herbs to use in the kitchen later on.  Pinch out the tips of your runner bean plants once they reach the top of their support. This encourages side-shooting and more beans at a manageable height for harvesting.  Continue to harvest second early potatoes now and start harvesting your maincrops as the leaves yellow and die back.  Keep an eye out for blight on tomatoes and potatoes. Treat with Bordeaux mixture at the first sight or when warnings are issued (for alerts register at www.blightwatch.co.uk)  Harvest french and runner beans little and often to ensure a continued supply and prevent them from setting seed.  Check for cabbage white butterfly eggs under brassica leaves and squash any that you find.  Harvest your fruit trees: cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines and apricots should all be ripe now! Early varieties of apple trees will be ready towards the end of the month.  Excesses of autumn raspberries, blackberries or loganberries, can be frozen on trays for a couple of hours and then bagged up for over winter use.  Prune the fruited stems of your blackcurrant bushes after harvesting.

Wey & Arun Canal Trust News Walkers Bring in £10,000 for Canal Restoration SPONSORED walkers have raised around £10,000 towards the restoration of a historic waterway. Their pleasant stroll in the country is boosting the work of the Wey & Arun Canal Trust, which is currently completing its first major project in Surrey. The money was amassed by the 157 people who took part in the charity’s annual Poddle walk in June. The fundraisers set off from North Hall in Loxwood to follow an 11-mile route with the new Compasses Bridge on the canal at Alfold as half-way point. After viewing the work in progress at the bridge and lunch at the nearby Three Compasses pub, they returned to the start point via paths across Surrey and Sussex farmland. “The proceeds are a fantastic result for our restoration fund,” said walk organiser Margaret Darvill. “With Gift Aid added, we have raised just on £10,000 from the sponsors. “My grateful thanks go to all those who helped me with organising the Poddle, both before the day and on the day and, of course, to our magnificent collection of walkers.” The trust has started a “final push” appeal for £120,000 to finish the Compasses Bridge project, which is its largest restoration scheme so far in Surrey. The bridge, at one of the entrances to the Dunsfold Park aerodrome and business complex, has replaced a 1930s concrete causeway. Members of the public are invited to watch Dame Penelope Keith officially open the bridge at noon on Sunday, October 2nd, as part of celebrations marking the Wey & Arun Canal’s bicentenary. Neighbourhood Watch - Crime News & Advice Holiday Booking Fraud With summer holidays upon us, individuals are often more exposed to travel booking frauds when looking for last minute package deals / cheap flights. Whether paying upfront for a family holiday or simply booking a flight, payments are transferred only to discover that the holiday / airline ticket does not exist and was sold to you by a bogus travel company. Fraudsters will often lure in potential customers with low prices and ‘one time only’ offers that are simply too good to pass up, requesting payment by the preferred method of direct bank transfer.

Avoid Paying for a holiday / airline tickets / accommodation via direct bank transfer. No reputable company will ever request payment via this method. Responding to unsolicited calls, texts or emails offering holidays at incredibly low prices.

Protect Yourself  Whenever possible, pay for your holiday by credit card as it offers increased protection.  Always remember to look for the ‘https’ and locked padlock icon in the address bar before entering your payment details.  Never feel pressured to make a booking for fear that you will miss out on this ‘low price’ opportunity. If you have never used the company before, take your time to do some online research to ensure they are reputable.  Should you make a flight or hotel booking through a travel company, feel free to separately check with the hotel / particular airline that your booking does indeed exist. Legislation changes on Rat Bait and the impact on users To combat the issue of poisoning non-target animals, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) tasked the Campaign for Responsible Rodenticide (CRRU) to co-ordinate, develop and deliver a stewardship regime to promote responsible use of rodenticide.  You will see new labels appear on products between 1st April and 30th September 2016.  Unless you are a certified user you will no longer be able to purchase baits bearing labels stating “For sale to and use by professional users only.”  Legislation also states any product already owned carrying an ‘old’ style label must be used by 31st March 2017 or disposed of in accordance with the label conditions. The prime purpose of our simulator project is to raise money for the RAF Benevolent Fund and to that end, simulator flights are normally charged for. Wisborough Green Short Mat Bowls Club We had a very enjoyable day in our inaugural Club Pairs Competition, with 9 teams lining up for battle, each team drew a number and then played 4 matches against random opponents. Some very competitive bowls was played during the day, which included a break for a Ploughman's style lunch plus tea and cake at the end. This all resulted in the top 5 teams finishing within one point of each other, on top were Bernard Adsett and Dawn Smith on 6 points and plus 16 shots. They were closely followed by Keith Carter and Audrey Hodgson on 6 points and plus 13 shots, the top 2 on the day going forward to play on finals day. The July Market was really uniquely special. Brilliant creative input and tremendous amount of work from Nicki and Emma, both with children at the village school, backed up by the usual home team led to a delightfully attractive Market with an even wider variety of stalls with extra specialist coffee, a manicurist and a children’s activity area.

Many thanks to the very talented Heidi who did the design for the flyers and to the School for publicity. Pupils had two stalls selling own produced items as part of their learning basic economics as well as design, production and interpersonal communications! Many thanks to Marion for providing and running the children’s activity area. Many thanks to all those lovely people who set up the stalls the evening before and 46

The bunting looped around in the centre of the Hall from its four corner supports looked like a hybrid between a crown and the four posters of a bed. It looked joyously fabulous. In spite of such extreme growing conditions you plucked victory out of a potential slough of despond and got such a lovely, joyous display of entries. Everyone made the Show the delight it is. WI Report Did you know that when sword swallowing there are three very important things to remember? First make sure that no one can touch you, second make sure that you know the length of your windpipe to the top of your stomach and thirdly do not use a sharp sword! So now you know ‘go ye ahead’! ( I didn’t really mean that). Fred Delius came and gave us a very different talk on his life and experiences as a magician, sword swallower, actor, circus act, comedian and entertainer to the rich and famous. He was super entertaining and spoke with no notes and kept us enthralled. In August some of us are going to see Half a Sixpence at Chichester Festival Theatre. Our September meeting on the 1st is a talk from a local retired Farm Manager, John Nash. He used to manage Costrong Nurseries at Plaistow and I sure he will be very entertaining as well but not in quite the same way as Fred! Happy Summer! Weather Watch Wisborough Green Rainfall for June was 113mm (46mm last year – my 8 yr average is 56mm). Lowest temperature was 0.1°C at Elphin, Inverness-shire and the highest was 27.8°C at Porthmadog, Gwynedd. (Some of these places I have to look up to see where they are!) CYBER TIPS Hard Sell Scam An elderly and vulnerable resident of Wisborough Green answered her phone recently to be informed that the law had changed so that every household in the land is required to install a carbon monoxide detector. Failure to do so would attract a fine of £1,000! Needless to say, this raised a few questions in her mind. Being “all electric” she failed to see the need for a CO detector, but was assured that that didn’t mattershe must buy one for nearly £80 and the level of fine was emphasized. After a long and persuasive conversation, the lady reluctantly agreed to purchase a detector and she offered up her debit card details. Then, realizing what she had done, she sought help, but the money had been taken from her account immediately, before her bank could be alerted that she had been cheated and although her card was cancelled within an hour or so of the transaction. Her bank could take no action to recover the money, the only possible way might be to call the seller. Not surprisingly the seller’s number, 08448 045 277, is one of those that costs a fortune if you use it. It transpires that the number belongs to a firm selling posh hampers for Christmas! And if you do want a CO detector, they cost £10-£15.
