elcome to my ‘third’ issue. Doesn’t time fly when one’s having fun!!

Actually I have been having a ball dressing up the ads for Christmas; bit like a child with a colouring book!

To those of you who are still sending good luck and congratulations messages, I thank you, and because I couldn’t help myself, have included a small ‘blow my own trumpet’ section. And thanks again to my helpers and contributors - don’t stop sending in your news.

Well done to all those who dressed up for Hallowe’en, I am indebted to Petter and Bluwater Web Design for taking some great pics. Some of you were completely unrecognizable but my sources told me who you were!

Did anyone spot my small faux pas in the last issue? Well you would have done if you’d taken notice of the date I put on the

‘clocks go back one hour’ and carried on regardless until Monday morning. At least the crossword survived!

Christmas fast approacheth and for that issue I have lots of bits’n’pieces, hopefully, to keep you amused. To my Advertisees, I shall be coming round for your Christmas messages so start thinking now and do try to keep them clean!

fair is to be held on Monday 7th December at the Hotel Puntazo, Mojácar Playa starting at 10.00am.

There will be a large range of stalls with something for everyone; ladies’ and gents’ clothes, jewellery, brica-brac, games, children’s’ clothes, homemade cakes and lots of books.

There will also be a raffle and port and mince pies to keep you in the festive mood. This is the Church’s main fundraising event of the year.

The Church is totally self funding and gives generously to Charities.

Come early and enjoy a taste of Christmas. Donations will be welcome of either prizes for the raffles or items to sell on the stalls.

The Dames in Turre have a talk on cruising by Doreen Wolton on November 30th at the Centro de Usos Multiples, Turre at 11am and on 5th December a Christmas Market in the square, Turre. To book a stall contact Pam 950 475 418.

I received a rather lengthy press release from the town hall regarding, amongst a few other things, the construction of the new football ground. Basically the construction of same has been awarded to Progall, provisionally that is, for the sum of one million, seven hundred thousand euros with the idea that it be ready by the end of next year.

Another press release from the town hall informed me that next year’s Moors and Christians will be celebrated on 11th, 12th and 13th June. This is the first notice of forthcoming events I have received so far in advance. They normally send them through with only two or three days notice and some have even been sent after the event took place! Anyway, artists are invited to submit a poster design or photograph for the event to the Mojácar Tourist Office by ‘31st’ November but I should get it in by the 30th just to be on the safe side!

The Dames in Spain had a full house at their October meeting featuring a talk and demonstration on reflexology by Sharon Bringloe from Sol Passion. Jill Leonard was the lucky ‘Dame’ in receipt of the treatment whilst some of the unlucky ones indulged in an “excellent” lunch of Paul’s famous fish and chips.

Bar on Mojácar Playa now have a “Ladies Day” every Thursday from 2pm. There is a wide range of items for sale which includes jewellery, clothes (Monsoon, M&S, Next), make-up, handbags and much, much more. Last week clairvoyant, Hilary Richards, was in attendance giving card readings. There is a special 2 course menu on offer for 5.50 euros, choose either a starter and main or main and dessert. Pat says if anyone wants to promote their business then this is a good place to start or just come along and strike up some new friendships.

PAWS Charity Shop on Mojácar Playa has put out the “party wear” for the Christmas party season at prices that won’t break the bank.

Shop hours are Tuesday to Saturday 10.30am ‘til 1.30pm. The shop is also looking for a till, dress rails and shelving. If you can help call Julie on 950 168 379 or 627 819 512.

Beachcomber has asked me to let you know that their full menu is on offer from 11am until last orders at 9pm and also that their take-away service is available all day too. (So when most restaurants have given up feeding people mid-afternoon you know where you can get something to eat).

I’m sure you must have already read the articles about PANGA. I too received an email regarding this fish and duly checked out the supplied link: http://www.digitaljournal.com/ article/279343 which contained rather alarming information. So I decided to ask the MAC fishing man himself, Beachcomber John. This is what he said … “I’m not saying everything in the website article is correct but Panga is a freshwater (not sure about fresh though) catfish from Vietnam. It is mostly farmed in the Mekong River which is one of the most polluted rivers in the world. Some unscrupulous restaurant owners are selling it as their “beer battered fish and chips” and as you might expect it’s usually cheaper than normal. Although this is not a lie, it is not right. It is sold to an unsuspecting public who believe it to be a salt water fish they would recognise and not a slimy

monster that comes from such a dubious source. This fish is farmed and fed with dubious food and I am also told the fish fillets are bleached before being sent to Europe. This is likely as the fish’s flesh is not naturally white, the fact this fish is known as a “Grey Sole” lends itself to this theory. I say eat it at your peril and remember you usually get what you pay for”. Beachcomber John.

PS. The Beachcomber doesn’t use this fish by the way. (And Zak’s Plaice in Garrucha informed me that neither do they).

A warning to those of you who live in areas where they go shooting for rabbits and such like. A rather distressed lady, who lives at the top of Agua de Enmedio, called in to say that her 18 month old dog had just died from poisoning - an absolutely horrible death which took just eight hours. Apparently the shooters put poisoned meat down to kill the foxes in these areas. My sympathy to the lady and to everyone else, be aware.

Mojácar Bridge Club have had to change their venue. Same day and time – Wednesday 7pm but is now at Valle de Este Hotel.

The Rose Singers concert on the 6th & 7th of November at the Kimrick was received enthusiastically by the large audiences. The programme opened with the Abba song “Thank You for the Music” which was also the title of the concert. Music was heard by Bert Bacharach, Paul Simon and many other popular composers.

Anne Tole and Ann Durrant sang the lovely duet “Wings of Sleep” by Ivor Novello. Anne Tole and Sue Mehmet were the soloists in “ Pie Jesu” from the requiem by Andrew Lloyd Webber. The choir sang an arrangement of Schubert’s “The Lord is my Shepherd” for three part ladies and also the popular “You Raise Me Up”, as well as more upbeat numbers like “Chatanooga Choo Choo”, “Lullaby of Broadway” and ‘Get Happy”. Ruth Wood made everyone laugh with a poem by Pam Ayers and in the second half Lyn Ferris gave the audience an explanation of the song “Send In The Clowns” before performing it. Pam Peters, the accompanist, was once again on form playing a selection of songs by George Gershwin. Another song by Abba “Dancing Queen” closed the concert. The draw on Friday night raised funds for MACS cancer support and on Saturday night for

Does anyone know why we have been plagued with flies? Well one of my readers offered a possible explanation and I quote, “Perhaps the recent fires have killed some creatures that normally obliterate these annoying little, useless, insects.”

Starting Sunday 29th as well as the jam session there will be a Rastro, all stall holders are welcome and if the first one is a success then the plan is to hold it every second week. Christmas Day is now fully booked however, if the sun is, “roaring and lovely and warm” they can take more as they have loads of outside seating and are going to check the weather forecast a couple of days before. orry to bring this up but as I write this there are only 53 days ‘til Christmas (and even less by the time you read it). For this reason I’d like to remind you about a website that, you may remember, I told you about last November. The site is www.fatherchristmasletters.co.uk .

Just as the last edition of this illustrious rag hit the streets, the good fishermen of Garrucha reported a record haul of melva. In just one day they brought in 100,000 kilos (100 tons) of this blue fish, a little similar to a mackerel. The entire week saw good harvests, most of it destined for canning factories in Huelva province. Unfortunately that means that in three months time these same fishermen will be demanding support from the government because the seas are now devoid of melva, or anything else for that matter. The fishermen's philosophy does seem to be "If we don't catch them somebody else will - so let's grab as much as we can for ourselves and let the future take care of itself."

I also read that the Spanish Ministry of Defence is considering changes to the law which would allow private security companies, operating in conjunction with the Spanish tuna fleet in the Indian Ocean (ie off the coast of Somalia), to mount large calibre guns, and also shrapnel guns, on boats protecting the fleet. This follows the capture, by pirates, of a fishing boat "Alakrana". In actual fact, cruel though it sounds, I think the only way to stop piracy is to revert to the system that was used hundreds of years ago to suppress piracy. Any pirate caught would be mutilated and then forced, at sword point, to walk along a plank and drop into the sea. A slow and horrible death was almost certain, but the lesson was not lost on anyone else. Gaol doesn't work. The rewards from just one successful act of piracy are equivalent to a lifetime's earnings for an entire family and, compared to the squalor in which the majority of Somalia's population live, prison is akin to a luxurious, all expenses paid, holiday.

Browsing the pages of "La Voz" I read that a court in Pontevedra had sentenced 21 year old Alberto Lozano Ferreira to 4 months' prison.

He'd been caught having a burn-up on his grid, and was clocked at 249 kph (155 mph) in a tricky area of the motorway where the speed limit is reduced to 100 kph. I can only presume that he pronounces the second part of his family name as "Ferrari".

If a council does not clear its debt, a PYME can apply to the government, who will pay it off and deduct the money directly from the "tribute" payable to that town hall for 2009, up to a maximum of 25% of the year's "tribute". (This is the money that each town receives according to how many people are on its padrón. It is one of the main reasons why everyone should register on the padrón. The more people there are, the more tribute the town receives.)

By far and away the worst "sinner" is Roquetas de Mar, with a debt of just over 15 million euros. Cuevas del Almanzora owes suppliers 7.3 million, whilst Vera owes 4 million.

Garrucha owes almost 3 million, Turre owes 1.5 million and Albox owes 1.3 million. Among the lesser debtors are Sorbas with 1,185,000 euros, Huércal Overa with 593,000 euros, Antas with 569,000 and Oria with 180,000 euros. Noticable by its absence from these lists is Mojácar.

That doesn't excuse them, though, for not expending money on maintaining the shrubbery along the paseo, not to mention repairing the children's playgrounds.

Back to less controversial ground! If you're a fan of bingo followed by an early Karaoke session, then the place for you is Sands on a Thursday. The bingo starts at 4 o'clock and once it is over, if you don't escape pretty smartish, you'll find yourself tangled up in an early starting Karaoke session.

As I write these words (at midnight on Sunday 8th November) the website tells me that Stansted is 3 degrees, with a 9 kph wind and patches of mist. Talking of chill factors, in the cooler weather I do like a liquid lunch. No, not from a bottle; from a soup bowl. The Lemon, all through the winter, offers a truly tasty range of home-made soups. They're almost as good as a cuppa - and three times the size!

Castillo de Tabernas, producers of some of the finest olive oil in the world, has announced it is to create its own distribution network in the USA. Their products are already well distributed in delicatessens and top restaurants in Miami and New York and are actually on the menu of the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. We're lucky; we can pick up this same fantastic oil from one or two local shops, or simply take a drive down the road towards the factory in Tabernas, where the price is not much more than that of everyday olive oil.

You're never too old, it seems. I read in the Spanish press that a 92 year old woman in a wheelchair was arrested at Madrid's Barajas airport with 4.3 kilos of cocaine hidden about assorted parts of her person.

Recently, the auction price for pepinos and berenjenas in El Ejido was 3 cents a kilo. In Mercadona berenjenas are 69 cents a kilo, pepinos (the cheapest ones we could find) cost 1.19 euros a kilo. My question: Who is making the profit?

Not the growers, that's for sure. One way to help the growers is to buy the majority of your fruit and veg at street markets and greengrocers. The growers probably get an extra couple of cents per kilo. It's not much but you pay less than in Mercadona anyway! I buy a lot of my veg in Thomas supermarket which is sort of half and half.

Have you recently received an e-mail saying it was from the UK tax office and telling you that you qualify for a rebate? If you don't want to be scammed; delete it! The scammers are merely after your address and bank details - and even your credit card number if you are sufficiently foolish. Remember this one detail. The policy of HMRC is only to contact potential receivers of tax refunds by post. i.e. "No epistle? Let 'em whistle!" If you have been taken in, contact your bank at once.

on the beach which nowadays is L'Incanto Italian restaurant, opposite Bar Los Arcos. I recently heard the sad news that John's then wife, Gillian, died about a month ago.

I've also just heard, via his mother, that Charlie (he used to work in Smugglers) has got himself a job in England.

Every Sunday, since they started doing Sunday lunches, the Captain's has found itself full. Sometimes advance bookings have accounted for their entire capacity but, if not, the last few places have been snatched up on the day. Not a week has gone by when they have had even one single empty seat at lunchtime - so either book or have your Sunday lunch later in the afternoon.

They close at 7pm.

Readers who have not been here very long may not realise it, but if you wish to have any form of bonfire it is mandatory to inform the authorities and get permission for it.

There is a very sound reason for this.

Outside Reflections I bumped into Aideen, the wife of Dan, the Irish headmaster. Dan and Aideen are very well known to many of the old timers of the area and have been visiting Mojácar regularly since the early '90s - you can when you have three holidays per year! Another great day and successful Mojácar Fun Run. 156 runners in the full race and 35 children in a very competitive hard fought children’s race.

Runners came from the U2K and all across southern Spain. The sun shone as is now expected every fun run day. Mel Jay provided the music as the runners came across the line at the Hotel Puntazo where their aching limbs were soothed by the masseuses from Harmony Gym some with beer in hand and in the glorious Mojácar sun. This was truly paradise in a parking lot.

Congratulations to all the winners well done to all the runners and their families and friends who cheered them on. Thank you to all the stewards and helpers and sponsors. Without you we do not have a run. Look forward to seeing you all next year.

However, the farmers had not notified the authorities, so that the planned fire could be approved and recorded. As a result, not only were the peasants charged with an offence, they had also to pay the costs of calling out the fire brigade. Be warned. If you have decided to burn off some garden rubbish, or anything else that is going to cause a reasonably large "smoke signal", you must first call the Guardia and have it approved.

I gather than John and Anne of Bar La Paratá have decided that they require larger premises (hardly

Anyway the upshot is that just as this issue hits the streets you should find that John and Anne have opened up opposite The Captain's in Da Vinci which, a few years ago, used to be called Agorá.

And if you're an "anorak" you may like to know that, according to Wikipedia, Agora (the Greek pronunciation is Agorá) was an "open place of assembly" in ancient Greek city-states. Early in Greek history (900-700 BC), free-born male land-owners who were citizens would gather in the agora for military duty or to hear statements from the ruling king or council.

Later, the agora also served as a marketplace, where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their goods amid colonnades. (Was this the ancient precursor to the car boot sale?) Anyway, from this twin

This augurs well for a few pleasant winter evenings. It also means that the Cave should once again be a centre of excellence for pool players, a place where conversation takes precedence over "noise" and another place where women can drop in without feeling "threatened". It reopens just before this issue hits the streets.

Almería is not doing so well this season, it's in the bottom half of the table. By now, last year, it was in 6th spot. The Murcia team, promoted to the Premier Division simultaneously with Almería, fell back. It is now in the relegation zone of the second division.

ast week I returned to Sinaloa Bar & Grill, situated between Las Buganvillas and Mercadona in Garrucha to sample once again Sue and Steve’s California & Mexican cuisine. This restaurant has a feel good factor as you walk in to a bright airy interior cheerfully decorated in white and a warm terracotta with matching table cloths and assortment of colourful artifacts.

We were warmly greeted by Lauren who quickly provided a very palatable bottle of house red (Señorio de los Llanos) and the menus to peruse. A convivial Steve (mine host) was very welcoming and complemented the décor well with his brightly coloured “surfing” shirt and repartee.

The menu is divided into Starters, Soups & Salads, Meats, Main Courses, Kids Menu and Desserts and there is plenty to choose from; Tortilla Chips with Salsa at 2.50€ to a Combo at 13€. Main courses range from 6.50€ for a Surfdog to 13.50€ for Fish of

the Day. We chose the Combo, a mixed starter for two consisting of chicken wings, stuffed potato skins, onion rings, jaladas which are jalapeño peppers filled with cheese accompanied by guacamole and a delicious sweet chilli dip. There was plenty of flavoursome food on this platter, my favorite being the jaladas.

For my main course I had a truly generous portion of Ribs coated in a BBQ sauce with fries and salad 9.50€ and I tucked in with gusto even using my fingers to ensure I got all the tasty pork. Dave opted for grilled Cajun Chicken also 9.50€ which was served with colourful rice and salad. A friend who had joined us tried the Fajitas 12.50€ with strips of beef and red and green peppers also served with rice and salad. The chicken was delicately spiced and the beef, tender and juicy.

For those of you who enjoy meat there are 2 Argentine steaks to choose from at 14.50€ and 18.50€ (and Steve believes that his prices are 40% less than in regular steak houses), a mixed grill for 2 at 30€, lamb chops 13.50€ and chicken breast 9.50€. Fish includes grilled salmon and a fish of the day, hake being the fish of that day both priced at 13.50€. Other spicy dishes include Chilli Colorado, pieces of beefsteak simmered in red chilli sauce and Chilli Cheeseburger. Enchiladas are served

with a choice of cheese, shrimp or chicken 8.50€ and Lasagne and Vegetarian Lasagne are both at 9.50€.

Children are well catered for with smaller portions from the main menu plus the all time favorites, fish fingers and chicken nuggets reasonably priced at 4.50€.

As usual we didn’t need dessert but one can’t ignore a complete section of a menu!! So valiantly we tried Key Lime Pie and Chocolate Fudge Brownie the latter being large warm gooey and delicious I’m told. For me you can’t beat Key Lime Pie with its soft biscuit base and cheesecake topping with tangy lime. Also on offer are a variety of ice creams, Carrot Cake and Ice Cream Crepes.

Numerous cocktails can be had too and there is a small affordable wine list of 4 whites, 2 rosados and 6 reds ranging from Estola at 9€ to Marqués de Cáceres at 12€ and Faustino at 14€.

We adjourned to the spacious lounge bar to enjoy our coffee in a pleasant relaxed atmosphere. Not only has Steve been complemented on his food but a recent customer said that it was one of the cleanest bars he’d ever been in (and that included the bathroom!)

Sinaloa Bar & Grill is open Monday to Saturday from 6pm. They offer a 3 course Dinner Special for 9.95€ until 7.30pm. Look out for the new Friday night special. On the 2nd Friday of the month if it is your birthday 2 can eat for the price of 1, the birthday person and their partner or a friend. Whether it’s your birthday or not, give Sinaloa a try.

FLYING FOR FUN ... IN VERA! My M1 Trainer, easy to fly, tough as old boots!!

Not a lot of people know this, but Vera actually has its own airfield! Hiding away, just to the north of the town, it is run by Gunter and Marion Muller. An amiable couple, who live on the site, and are both pilots.

I have been conducting flight training, pleasure, and aerial photography flights, with the Aeroclub Mar Menor, San Javier for the last three years. Anyway, relocation to Los Gallardos had me looking for somewhere a little more local to work from, and to form a new club, Solaero.

Vera airfield is idyllic, beautifully kept, but so quiet! Why or indeed how they have kept this place such a secret is beyond me!

It is a delightful airstrip of just over 400m of tarmac, with hangar, a bar, and even a small caravan park!

The strip is suitable for all microlight aircraft, VLA, and heavier traffic with good shortfield capability. Now, at this point please let me dispel a few myths!

The word microlight is an unfortunate and outdated term which conjures up images of a kite with a lawnmower engine and a shopping trolley attached. Well, OK such things do still exist, but mostly in aviation museums (although Gunter happens to have one in the back of the hanger if you want to book a flying lesson for the mother in law!)

Carbon fibre bodies, ultra-light computerised instrumentation, and advanced aerodynamic design make the latest generation of micro’s a force to be reckoned with. They look and fly exactly

A very wet Ibiza! Good job we brought the shark!! like “proper” aeroplanes, only faster, sharper, and safer. Some have speeds in excess of 150Kt, and landing distances of less than 100m are common. Find me a club Cessna or Piper that can match any of that!

Any PPL holders stuck in the dark ages out there who are still not convinced? – Give me a call and fly mine with me…..you will be!

Flying is no longer the rich man’s sport that it used to be, and it is possible, (just!) for a switched on student to gain a very basic licence with as little as fifteen hours flying training – which, with exam and admin. fees would be less than two thousand Euros! I’m not sure you could learn to drive a car so cheaply these days. Another giant leap for mankind is that in the last couple of years

the aviation authorities have finally recognised just how good these machines are, and will now allow microlight training hours to form part of the full PPL training course if you really want to go on to the bigger stuff.

Flight training with me is in my two seat M1, but we have access to larger aircraft for excursions.

We run an overnight package to Ibiza for two, which includes outbound flight with myself as pilot in command, co-pilot Janet, (and yes, she is also my partner but along for safety reasons of course!) a choice of 4 star hotels, car rental, and the return flight. Total price is around 900 Euros. Other popular destinations are Granada, Seville, and Cordoba.

For a nice peaceful start to Christmas for all the family APSA are holding a Carols and Candlelit Meditation evening on Monday 14th December at La Parilla, Albox.

Hosted by Steve King of Smooth FM and Beverley Steer, the evening will include mulled wine and mince pies and there will also be a memory tree. Start time is 7.30pm. Tickets are 5 euros and are now available from APSA and shops displaying the poster.

The recent APSA evening with Brian Dee held at La Parilla restaurant in Albox raised 743 euros for APSA and Puppy Rescue. Nearly 100 people danced the night away to Brian’s superb singing. Gold Appeal Have you got an old gold earring having lost the other one or perhaps a piece of broken chain? Puppy Rescue needs them. If we can collect enough it will go to our Dogs to Holland appeal. 20 of our dogs from the kennels are to go to Holland where there are homes waiting for them, if we can get them there by December. It will cost 100 euros per dog so we need your help. So have a root around, sort out those odd earrings.

The recent ACRAA Family Fun Day raised a whopping 1,184 euros for APSA and Puppy Rescue.

Thanks go to Anita Watson’s Dance Academy, husband John’s karate class and the Loose Women Line Dancing Troupe for entertaining the crowd. Grateful thanks too from the charities to Chris and her band of stallholders, the Mayor, La Marmita Bar and Back to Basics Dog Training Club for the excellent displays and dog show. Everyone had a great time on a lovely sunny day in Arboleas.

Kristine and Maz of Syedpur would like to thank Debby for her successful sponsored walk on Sunday 1st November. A big thanks to all the sponsors that raised 112 euros for APSA. Debby sent the dogs home for a well earned rest, then came to The Loft in Mojácar to help us with another great curry night. Planning for visitors over Christmas? The APSA charity shop in Calle Ancha, Albox would like to remind you they have a new wheelchair for hire at rates of 5 euros per day, 25 euros per week or 40 euros for 2 weeks. Call in the shop to check availability. A refundable deposit of 30 euros is payable on collection. All the proceeds benefit the many dogs in their care. and they thank again the family who made this generous donation.

The APSA sponsored dog walk raised over 550 euros for the animal charity of Albox. The walkers and their pets enjoyed a leisurely 8km walk in lovely sunshine. They thank Sue, the organiser and all who took part and look forward to seeing you all again at the next one in the Spring.

Pamela’s Line Dance Club had a lovely Hallowe’en Dance on Saturday 31st October raising further monies for Breast Cancer with “Guess The Teddy’s Name”.

The 31st was the last day to raise funds for “Breast Cancer Awareness Month” and as soon as all the “Pink Ribbon” monies have been collected they can announce the total to be donated.

e are actively involved with the Chief of Police in Garrucha in gaining his support for NHW. His office covers quite a large area. Our first meeting went very well and I am very optimistic in taking this further with him, for his area. At the moment the only areas covered by his officers are an area in Turre and a part of Mojacar.

It can obviously be of tremendous benefit to residents to be a part of such a scheme which would have a two way information path between the residents and the Police, in the sharing of information.

NHW is globally accepted as the best Crime Prevention policy with active schemes in Canada, America, UK, France, Australia, New Zealand and for the past 6 years, Spain.

We have active and successful schemes working in many parts of Northern Almeria Province under the authority of the registered National NHW in Spain organisation.

We are looking for community minded individuals living in any areas not already covered by NHW to contact me and help us improve both our own security and our

integration into Spanish society.

NHW does work in this regard as can be seen in many of the areas we operate.

Obviously the more areas we cover the more information we can share to help protect ourselves. We have a history of success in preventing crime and assisting in the apprehension of offenders.

Although criminal activity is, at the moment, very quiet it makes it an ideal time to establish the communication lines so that when things do get busier these lines are in place. Please don't wait until you, or a neighbour becomes a victim of crime, before considering NHW. It really can make a difference.

Darker nights are here and historically crime has increased at this time of year.

If you feel you could spare a few hours a month (at most) in helping your community security and helping to integrate into the local communities (we do work with the local Spanish residents and involve them) then please contact me.

History of the Ditloid - Will Shortz originated the current form of the ditloid puzzle. First published in an article in the May-June 1981 issue of Games Magazine, the EQUATION ANALYSIS TEST comprised 24 questions with the instruction: "Each equation contains the initials of words that will make it correct. Find the missing words." The test was not to measure one's intelligence, fluency with words or mathematical ability but to gauge one's mental flexibility and creativity. In the first three years Will Shortz found that only a few people could solve more than half the 24 questions on the first try though many reported getting answers long after the test had been set aside at unexpected moments when their minds were relaxed, and some reported solving all the questions over a period of several days. In its annual 1981 issue Us Magazine named the Equation Analysis Test in the "What's hot" category - the only non-person so recognized. Shortz then reported that some anonymous person had re-typed the puzzle from Games, photocopied it and passed it along. This was then re-photocopied and circulated, like a chain letter, around the country. Games readers who hadn't seen the original started sending it in as something the magazine ought to consider publishing!

We always visit Henry Higgins’ tomb at the Mojácar cemetery on Nov 1st. We didn’t know he was entombed there ‘til a few years ago. The first time we visited there were no flowers or candles, so now we always take one. However, this year there were a couple of candles already, maybe your article from the early July 2009 edition about Henry inspired others to visit him.

I clearly recall the day Henry died. My ex, who was really into bullfighting, knew him and we were going to meet up with Henry and his friend that day. However, the fatal accident occurred and I recall going to the Hotel Mojácar, (no longer there) and consoling poor Henry’s friend, (I can’t remember her name). I do recall however, that there were some strange stories as to what exactly happened that day with the hang-glider, but who knows!

The picture is of our candle of remembrance for this year being placed by my boyfriend, who loves all the stories I have told him about my past in this area.
