ell, here I am writing for my sixth issue already and I can’t help but thank my ‘Advertisees’ for their continued support. Thanks also to those of you who are still sending in words of support and congratulations on a job well done. They are very much appreciated and are increasing my ‘blow my own trumpet’ archives.

I think you’ll find this issue rather well packed with informative articles, events and happenings and the decision to bring it out at the beginning of the month has deemed to be a good one.

I’ve made a couple of changes … your Sudoku puzzle is a bit harder and I’ve sourced a different cryptic crossword so do please give them a go and let me know what you think.

I’ve still quite a few ideas with regards future content but if there is something you feel would be of general interest or should, or could, be covered feel free to let me know.

I am always open to suggestions.

Naranjo would like to apologise for the delay in starting up their karaoke and quiz nights but they are having trouble trying to fit them in so will have to hold off for a while.

Iron Art should have moved by the time this mag comes out. Still on the El Real Industrial Estate but to a bigger and better unit with a glass frontage situated on the main thoroughfare, after the wheel island, on the left. They have lots of exciting developments taking place the first of which, is working with Phil from Ground Cover for all your plants and gardening requirements.

Whilst in Antas, Ferreteria El Real & The Full Swing was to open on 1st Feb in new premises four times the size of the present situation. All areas had been agreed on including the purchase of the stock already in the building (Ferreteria Maxima) when two days before the keys were to be handed over, the owner of the building demanded a deposit of just short of 10,000 euros. They agreed to disagree and so are staying where they are but expanding.

A new room is being built, as I write and you read, of 60 square metres just for paints, wood preserves, varnishes, brushes, stencils, mastics, silicones and glues. The pool chemicals and accessories will also be housed in there. After this is completed, the next project is to organise the Joiner’s shop and wood stock. Later the room to the front of the building will also be converted to a clean, bright, dust free room which will allow the golf shop to be extended onto the second floor.

Whereas with the new shop, this would have been an immediate transformation, it is now going to take a bit longer... but look out for new lines coming. Small electrical items, bedding including pillows, sheets, duvets, duvet covers, mattress covers, towels, pet food etc... There’s always going to be something new coming in.

issue were a bit awry! I’ve now driven it several times and am confident to announce – from El Real, direction Antas, go straight across the two motorway islands, past Ramblizo on the left and straight across the smaller island.

Just before the turning left into Antas itself you will see a small road on the right signposted Cuevas del Almanzora. Take that turning and Ralf Motors is approx. 200 metres up on the right.

Back in Mojácar – Reflections now have a full size champion standard snooker table which Chris says will be run on a booking system. They have also changed their opening times to 1pm ‘til late, every day.

The Loft has installed a dart board. They have a new enclosed heated terrace area and will be hosting their next Syedpur curry night on Sunday 28th March.

Telitec Communications has now moved. You will find them within Axa Insurance on the Bar Med, Beachcomber, Crown Cars, Irish Rover strip.

That reminds me. Bar Med will soon be offering fresh, home-made Bistro style tapas and snacks and although they will be available all through the day and night the kitchen will be separate so as not to interfere with the live entertainment.

Their opening hours will also change. Watch this space!

ome people don’t like Mondays. Having lived in Mojácar for twenty years I don’t like Februarys. It is the lull in the tide of our year and for those of us who work in tourism it is the furthest one can be from any kind of reasonable income. February, stuck as it is, right between Christmas and Easter, like a tail between the legs, is a time when one can fall prey to the greatest insult a person can bestow upon oneself, boredom. A huge annoyance for the moralists as many of Mankind’s sins are indulged through fear of boredom. And in order to side-step this potential landmine I have bravely sought out the most mind-numbing, time-wasting and yet entertaining websites to help you while away the long wet gloomy hours that gang together in days and weeks to test our strength and our weakness. This is a site with a couple of fun and free flash games. It is a little addictive, so be warned, “Home Run” is the one to try. Your job is to simply help a poor drunkard waddle home using nothing but your mouse. He inevitably falls down and a sign pops up telling you how many meters passed under his uncoordinated feet.

The world record for this game is over 500 meters (unless you count that Saturday in ‘92 when me and the boys walked back from Tuareg) and for the record, I managed to get the poor fella 17 meters nearer to his house.

Nothing is the answer to that but what if you were to ask someone, or yourself for that matter, a question like “Do you view history as more of a force or as a series of individual events?” Now that’s a question. In the wrong hands it might start an insightful conversation or make someone stop and think about all manner of things, including why they dye their hair? “Is my hair colour an individual event?

Carol Sutton of K7GRUPO Inmobiliario, and wife of ‘The Handyman That Can’, Chris, fortunately decided to celebrate her 50th birthday on Saturday 23rd January, her actual birthday being Tuesday 26th, the day of the most dreadful rain here. Celebrations, attended by both English and Spanish friends, started at 2pm and although the weather was cool, it was fine during the day enabling them to extend the party to the garden as well as the house. One of Carol’s friends, a singer, sang her heart out most of the day for free – it was her birthday present to her. After lots of wine and food had been consumed the party finished not long before midnight with many more people singing along with the singer. Luckily, Carol says, all of them could sing!!!.

Thankfully a better start to 2010 for Chris than the end of 2009 who sadly lost both his parents within three weeks of each other. After attending his father’s funeral at the beginning of December he had only been back in Mojácar for one week when his Mum also died.

Working for Grace and Dave was Chris, who become more like a close friend than an employee and eventually bought the Lemon from them. When Grace died of cancer in the mid nineties, we all grieved, none more so than Dave.

Some time later, Dave Williams and Pam Campillo struck up a friendship, whic h eventually became deeper, after they had both moved to Málaga.

In mid February there was a happy re-union when Dave and Pam dropped in to visit their friend Chris in the Lemon Lounge, and invited old time friends to join them.

How could I refuse to meet up with two of the nicest folk I have ever known? Petter.

Keith (Wolfie) and Heather celebrated their 50th Wedding Anniversary on Thursday 18th February at the Lemon Lounge.

Health Benefits of Tai Chi

Reducing Stress The majority of us carry tension or hold stress as part of our day to day lives. However we do have choices and within Tai Chi we can be shown how by firstly becoming aware of the tension/stress we have. That with simple changes through our initial awareness we can learn to relax and let some of the tension and stresses go.

As some of us may believe we are just matter or energy. Within Tai Chi we are continually working with energy, our own internal energy, referred to as Qi. There is a saying that “Where the mind goes, energy flows” so in going back to my earlier comments of mind, body connection, we learn to use our minds in collaboration with our bodies ,which can then allow us the potential to move energy around our body.

As we become more flexible and subtle from gently stretching and exercising our muscle and tendons, we are then potentially beginning to open up some of the physical, mental and emotional blocks thus allowing energy to flow.

With every aspect of our Tai Chi training we are using exercises, postures and movements that are continually moving and shifting our energy .With control and focus we can start to take charge in how and where we place our energy.

As a general summary to the benefits mentioned above Tai Chi is becoming a common subject of scientific research. So far, there are published results to demonstrate that the exercises help with back and knee problems, improve balance, reduce falls and hip fractures in the more mature, speed recovery after illness such as heart attacks, reduce depression, improve circulation and reduce recurrent headaches and migraine.

A view from the pilot’s seat ...

Ok, so which of the above is a microlight? Stupid question really, except it’s not!

The first one is a Quicksilver from the seventies, it has a top speed of very slow, an endurance of about 90mins, and is of course a microlight. The second one is a Moragon M1 Stela, mine in fact! It has a top speed of about 110 knots, with an endurance of an incredible 5 hours. And it is also a microlight!

Surprised? Well the third one is the amazingly sexy TL2000 Sting, with a top speed of 150knots, retractable gear and variable prop as options.

And yes, it’s a microlight, and I so want one!!

The word microlight is an outdated term that conjures up images of a kite nailed to a lawnmower, but the actual definition of a microlight is that it has no more than two seats, has a maximum take off weight of no more than 450kg, and a stall speed of no more than 32 knots.

In the seventies, this was only just achievable with machines like the Quickie, but now…carbon fibre, lighter, more powerful engines, and computerized instrumentation have allowed today’s micro’s to evolve into superb aircraft.

So, how do they fly? Well, exactly the same as traditional Cessna’s and Pipers only faster, sharper, and safer. In fact I think they are more involving, the extra agility of the aircraft requiring more positive control inputs, and faster responses from the pilot. Climbing out of my M1 into a Cessna is akin to getting out of a Ford Focus into a Transit van.

The microlight license can be achieved in as little as 25 hours, and will cost you about three grand all in. Better still, a microlight license counts towards your training if you want to fly the bigger stuff.

After that, if you’re keen, owning your own aircraft is probably cheaper than you think. There are models to suit all budgets. The Sting? Well if you need to ask, you probably can’t afford it! At the other end of the scale there are still plenty of Quickies flying for probably less than the price of a good lawnmower!!

Seriously though, twenty thousand euros will buy you a very nice, aircraft with running costs of no more than a family car. Many pilots buy planes in a group, sharing the cost, maintenance, insurance etc between the shareholders.

Our corner of Spain with it’s 300 plus days a year of sunshine is perfect for flying. You don’t need a licensed airfield to fly microlights. A suitable strip of land, with the owner’s permission is all that’s required, and there are plenty of those in the local area, and over 1000 that I am aware of in Spain, some in the most spectacular surroundings.

There are many aspects to the word balance, in Tai Chi we refer to the Mind, Body, Spirit, balance.

By being aware of both your mind and body to a point where you are able to distinguish the two. You are then able to control and distinguish individual parts of your body, which allows for great change (or changes) to take place.

We practice the art of balance in exercises that allow the physical body to learn over time. For example as part of our preparatory exercises, we stand in a relaxed posture on one leg. At the same time we are concentrating on other aspects of our body, this can help to improve your physical balance.

As we progress and become more relaxed we are able to make slow relaxed movements that flow together referred to as the form.

These movements are assisting us in many ways, one of which is our physical balance and awareness of our own space in time.

As part of our inner Tai Chi journey we practice standing post meditation (Qigong). The exercises assist relaxation and help develop awareness and later bring control of body and mind.

As a simple exercise look at your left hand, now clench it into a fist, now really hold it tight, and now just let it go. We have the ability to be able to do this all over our body, but first we have to be open to see where we hold our tension and stress.

Relaxation is a major part of our Tai Chi training and as we become more aware of how deep rooted some of our tensions are then through specific exercises we can address individual parts of the body as a whole. Over time students get to see the mind body connection and begin to make their own distinctions.

In last month’s publication I touched upon the health benefits of Tai Chi. In this article I would like to expand upon this in more detail and inform you of some of the potential ways of improving your balance, reducing stress and improving circulation.

One of the areas that we teach early on to our students is the importance of RAC. Relaxation, Awareness and Concentration.

Words are easily used yet it is the continued practice over time that allows the evidence to show up in each individual’s life.

Last time we held off the Garrucha Veteranos 21 by the end of the first half, but by the end of the full 90 minutes, we managed to scrape by a 7-3 loss to them. Of course this tactic meant leaving the door open for future matches with them on their lovely pitch.

New players arrive almost every week, while others leave after their holidays. More importantly, our Group welcomes more to join in at any time – it is open to all.

Spectators are welcome too, although at the moment it is standing room only. Come on and check us out, or join in on the fun @: Campo de Fútbol Municipal de Mojácar, 10:30AM - 10:45AM – just up the road from the Continental (Juan the Butchers) and follow the orange signs. If you are late, it does not matter either, we will fit you in somewhere.

@ Bar La Finca. Today, we have well over 20 plus showing up sporting their latest moves on the pitch every weekend. Many players were with England and Scottish youth teams, or played semi-pro in their earlier years for their local clubs.

There is a set of core players who are always there religiously every Sunday to “Spread the Love” and manage to get some really good banter going on – all in good humour of course ... If you can’t play, it is worth showing up just for that!

Probably one of the most important aspects of the matches is the sportsmanship and high regard for each other’s safety. While matches are always competitive everyone has respect for each other as well as life and work off the pitch. Injuries do happen, but more often than not, they are self inflicted!

One of the highlights of any given Sunday is getting enough to get a full 11 v. 11 match in, but often the smaller shorter pitch is used for the more realistic numbers who show up. All matches are followed by an entertaining single elimination “last man standing penalty kickoff” where the winner takes home a trophy, for the week.

Each week has a different winner, sometimes … As the winner, the penalty trophy gives you bragging rights for at least 7 days.

Some have been seen to put it on their hood of their car!

Back in the early 1980s’, Mojácar Pueblo used to have a really good team which actually broke out of the ranks of 3rd division, into 2nd. There was a field, and some of the key players who originated from the Barcelona youth squads coupled with local talent added to their great success. Over the years they did quite well, but the usual (funding, lack of sponsorship and the politics) made the team as well as its field, completely disappear.

Finally after a long tenure without the Beautiful Game here in town, a group of local lads now gather every Sunday morning at 10:30am, rain or shine (or even snow for that matter, like a few weeks ago), for a good kick-about.

Most of the team had hung up their boots a while back after a successful but at the same time, highly competitive; 5-a-side league which had started up back in 2005-2006. It ran for two seasons, and it too, disappeared.

Much to my content, I was invited about 8 weeks ago or so (at the time of writing, early December) to join the Sunday group for some “footie”, a group which I did not know a whole lot about.

Amazingly, the team is comprised of a mixture of many different nationalities of all ages to include English, Spanish, Lithuanian, Scottish, German, Welsh, Italian, Irish, Czech (Republic), Rumanian, South American, and even a couple of “dudes” from the USA make up the team.

Irish communities around the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day. St. Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland and is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.

Born in Britain, around 385AD, his parents Calpurnius and Conchessa were Roman citizens living in either Scotland or Wales, according to different versions of his story.

As a boy of 14 he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland. After spending six years in slavery, herding sheep he escaped returning to Ireland in his 30s as a missionary among the Celtic pagans.

Legend has it that he used the native shamrock as a symbol of the holy trinity when preaching to explain how the Trinity of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit could exist as separate parts of the same being and brought the Latin alphabet to Ireland.

The most famous legend attributed to him is that of driving out the serpents of Ireland by ringing his bell from the top of Croagh Patrick near Westport.

However, evidence suggests post-glacial Ireland never had any snakes in the first place. St. Patrick is also supposed to have rid Ireland - specifically County Donegal - of a fierce lake monster. After he had killed it, the blood turned the lake red and so since then the lake has been known as Red Lake or Lough Derg. Both the mountain and the lake have become places of annual pilgrimage in the hope that the journey will rid them of all their sins.

It is wholly due to St. Patrick’s French sojourn that Hawthorn bushes bloom in the winter in the Loire Valley. He crossed the Loire River, hung his cape to dry on a Hawthorn bush, and that is how this miracle came about.

According to legend, wearying of St. Bridget's constant complaints about the traditional social morals requiring women to wait for marriage proposals to come their way or forget about the matter entirely, St. Patrick instituted the practice of allowing women to propose to men on a

Leap Year. The reason he didn't make it an every day occurrence can perhaps be gleaned from the fact that on the very next Leap Year he found himself on the receiving end of a proposal from St. Bridget herself.

St. Patrick incorporated pagan elements into Christianity to make the religion more palatable to the new converts.

He built the first church in Ireland at Mag-inis.

It is believed that St. Patrick died on March 17 in 461AD. He ordered that after death he be buried wherever the oxen pulling his funeral cart stopped.

They reportedly didn't go further than Downpatrick and is said to be buried at Down Cathedral, although this has never been proven.

People didn't actually start praying to St. Patrick until the eighth century A.D. The Vatican followed suit much later.

St. Patrick was said to have proclaimed that everyone should have a drop of the "hard stuff" on his feast day after chastising an innkeeper who served a short measure of whiskey. In the custom known as "drowning the shamrock", the shamrock that has been worn on a lapel or hat is put in the last drink of the evening.

Wearing green, eating green food and even drinking green beer, is said to commemorate St. Patrick's use of the shamrock - although blue was the original colour of his vestments. The people of Ireland weren't exactly fond of green - according to them it was the colour of the Fairies and Leprechauns and, unless you wanted to forcibly join the ranks of these Wee Folks, you would refrain from sporting that colour too often. It wasn't until the 19th Century that green became the official colour of Ireland.

a bank holiday in Northern Ireland and a provincial holiday in the Canadian province of Newfoundland. Strangely though it's only been 75 years since Dublin began having a St. Patrick's Day parade and even more peculiarly, until 1995, the Dublin pubs used to be closed on this National Holiday.

It is not known when exactly St. Patrick's Day began to be celebrated outside Ireland, but the first written description comes from Jonathan Swift, the author of Gulliver's Travels, who mentions the celebrations of 1713 in London. According to him, the Westminster Parliament took a holiday on this day and all the public buildings had green decorations.

The first St. Patrick's Day parade in America was held in Boston on 17 March 1737 and the practice began in New York on 17 March 1762. Around 34 million modern Americans claim Irish ancestry. Chicago followed suit later and has a tradition -

since 1962 - of dyeing the Chicago river green with vegetable dyes.

In 1900 Queen Victoria decreed that Irish Regiments should wear the shamrock on St. Patrick's Day in memory of the Irish soldiers killed in the Boer War. St. Patrick's Day is now celebrated all over and is the longest running civilian parade in the world -The Dublin parade attracts hundreds of thousands of people. The biggest parade is normally held in New York, while the largest celebration in the southern hemisphere is in Sydney, Australia.

A large percentage of Catholic Cathedrals the world over are named after St. Patrick.

On St. Patrick's Day, you can bring yourself good luck by finding a four-leaf clover, wearing green, and kissing the Blarney Stone.

ACEM AND THE MOJACAR COMPETITION ACEM the Mojácar Business association held their dinner dance on February 6th which was attended by the mayor of Mojácar and over 210 guests, from both Spanish and other businesses.

During the dinner dance Karin, the president of the association, gave a presentation of the aims of the ACEM and invited all businesses in Mojácar to join and help bring about renewed business in Mojácar.

The raffle and auction helped raise in excess of 3,000€ which the association will use to promote business in Mojácar.

The association has arranged a competition where three lucky people will win a one week holiday in Mojácar which has already had 3,500 visitors since mid January. At the last count a total of 480 people had entered.

On February 15th and 16th Jon Gaunt from SunTalk was in Mojácar broadcasting live from Lua Café del Sol and Jazz Life Café. Both venues were offering a free glass of wine and a tapa to everyone who went along between 11am and 2pm. Jon will be back in Mojácar on May 24th to do another live broadcast, this time from Tito’s beach bar, when he will interview the lucky prize winners.

Desert View • Sunseed Desert Technology is a sustainable living community in Los Molinos de Rio Aguas, Sorbas. Its aims are to develop, demonstrate and communicate accessible, lowtech methods of living sustainably in a semi-arid environment. The different areas it works in are; organic growing, eco-construction, appropriate technology, reforestation, water management, education and sustainable living.

Sunseed is a registered charity that began in 1986. It runs solely on

donations from their volunteers.

They run semi frequent courses on everything and anything connected to low carbon/sustainable living methods throughout the year, however they are not a formal education centre.

On Saturday 6th March Sunseed and the Pita Museum are organizing an Open Day to show their projects to visitors. It will be a fun day filled with tours, events and activities.

The Pita Museum is a project that from 1993 has been working with organic pita wood, making handcrafts and studying all the possibilities that this plant can offer in desert areas. They work in conjunction with the Ethiopian NGO Edget Baandnet.

The Open Day will take place nearby Sorbas in the village of Los Molinos de Rio Aguas. The

The pitter patter of petty pennings

"It was disgusting," said Major Tom. "I was stuck up at La Paratá and all the restaurants were closed.

There was nowhere I could eat." He was referring, of course, to the heavy downpour we had just before the last edition went to press. In just one day Mojácar Playa received 117 litres per square metre (4¾ inches), equivalent to 42% of its average, annual ration.

In March of 2007 a driver known as "Kamikaze", one Manuel Jesús P. G., drove for 60 kilometres down the A6 between Tordesillas and Villardenrades directly against the traffic. During the course of his safari he caused two accidents, which resulted in two deaths and four serious injuries. In January 2010 he was finally sentenced to four years’ internment in a securely locked psychiatric centre. (Put this in the light of penalties handed down for many lesser crimes, such as growing a crop of marijuana, and it becomes ridiculous. Maybe the psychiatric centre should throw away the key to his padded cell.)

The Basque government has offered its support to a Basque transport syndicate called Hiru which has appealed after one of its affiliates was charged with an offence by the Guardia Civil in Jaén.

The reason given by the traffic cops was that the data on its tachograph disc were written in Euskera, the Basque language. (I sometimes feel that the Guardia officers must be given a weekly "multa quota" with dire consequences if they fall below it. However, in this case there are other considerations. Having a Spanish tachograph in the Basque language only is akin to a lorry in the UK having all its tachograph information written only in the Welsh language. Why not have them bi-lingual? Irrespective of your local pride in your "tribe" the fact remains that you are part of a nation whose official tongue is Castellano. Where I come from there are some two hundred tribal languages but everybody also has to learn the two official national languages, English and Swahili; strangely enough, in that order!)

Sometimes, as I drive fruitlessly around Mojácar's Parque Comercial, I think it should be renamed as the "No Parque" Comercial. Mind you, it's not as bad as it used to be before they made it one-way in order to add the extra bit of parking. Parking there in the summer is completely impossible. The main blame can be laid fairly and squarely at the door of the town hall for allowing so many holiday apartments to be built adjacent to it without any off-road parking. The only solution now is to do what Vera town has done, install Pay and Display. Fifty cents PAGE 24

gets you about an hour, so it's very affordable compared with the money a shopper intends to spend and guarantees that more shoppers can park. The extra income from more shoppers compensates shop staff for their longer walk to work.

The only losers are the apartments so tough. Next time, the people who book holidays will look for places with easier parking.

How's this for the ultimate traveller's tale. Sally, who is hoping to land a job teaching English on the Arabian peninsula had to fly to UK for a medical. So long suffering Paul drove her to Almería where she boarded a plane to Gatwick and duly had her medical. Her return trip from Gatwick to Almería was scheduled for very early on Thursday morning so Sally went to the airport the evening before to wait it out - and guess what? Despite being already at the airport, she was late actually checking in and then, having been delayed by security checks, ended up missing her flight. The next flight from Gatwick to Almería was not until Sunday and so she rather uncomfortably slept at the airport until then. At least the accommodation was "free" and she tells me she met a lot of very interesting people. Needless to say, on the Sunday she checked in early!

Police in Italy have made a major seizure of counterfeit goods.

The haul included clothes and leather goods, which officers say are of "amazing quality". The fake goods were discovered in eight industrial hangars east of Rome.

They included clothes, shoes, leather goods and other accessories.

Police say they could have come from Asia. Italy has had a series of counterfeit scams in recent years. It is believed that the items would have been given Italian designer labels and sold in markets and on the streets of Italy's cities, where fake handbags, wallets and belts can be seen around tourist attractions. It is the latest in a massive haul of counterfeit goods in recent years.

Italy's national retailers association says that around 6.9bn euros (£6bn) of fake products are sold each year.

Among other elaborate scams in recent years has been the case of two Japanese businessmen who were stopped on a train while carrying fake bonds worth 97bn euros. Then there was the giant counterfeit olive oil deception. The batches were actually concoctions of sunflower oil mixed with industrial chlorophyll to give it a green colour. There have been calls for a counterfeit tsar to be appointed to stop the rackets which cost legitimate businesses so much. But in a country where top brand labels like Gucci, Bulgari and Armani are so common, stopping the trade is, in practical terms, highly unlikely, especially when so many buyers are eager to snap up the fakes. (If the quality of the counterfeits is high, then I would happily buy them and chop out the fake label! Indeed, why do so many numbskulls buy overpriced goods, some of it pretty shoddy, for the sake

While I’m in “moan mode”, let me ask you if you consciously make an effort to keep down your calorie intake yet you don’t seem able to lose weight? You may not be imagining it. Research is showing that Glutamates, as found in many processed foods and snacks, is implicated. Foods with high glutamate content include snacks like Doritos, prepared hamburger meat, and KFC chicken, to name just a few. When reading labels don’t only look for MSG (alias E621).

Other culpable phrases include “hydrolysed vegetable protein”, “Meat extract” and “Fish extract”. I gather glutamates also exist in E620 and E625. By the way, the same glutamates are also being implicated in brain disorders.

Another update. I gather from Geoff of Sitio (Zoe's brother) that Zoe is well settled in England, Jimmy is settling into school and Simon is driving his taxi "more than ever".

Meanwhile Geoff and Iain had a wonderful annual trip to the UK for Geoff's mother's birthday. They tell me that bars and businesses in England seem to be busy and thriving, a big change from the state of affairs on Mojácar Playa.

Did you know that in the Ramo del Limón you can order Vega Verde wine? It's ideal for the poor sod who's driving because, whilst being quite quaffable, it is only 5 percent alcohol. Unless you swill the entire bottle you can face the traffic Guardia with equanimity.

In the Cave Bar, Jim has set up a Wii system which is proving very, very popular, especially the ten pin bowling emulation. It's completely free to have a go. Another popular recent event I attended in the Cave was some real life research into the Big Bang. It took over an hour, but it held the attention of most of the people there. Even Major Tom found it "most educational."

It's the end of the world according to Roland Emmerich, which at least guarantees that we go out with a bang and not a whimper.

2012 stands as the director's grand end-of-days party; his crowning act of global vandalism: here is a film that thinks nothing of pushing California into the ocean, or knocking Christ the Redeemer off his perch above Rio, or flattening the White House beneath an aircraft carrier washed in by a tsunami. At one stage Woody Harrelson's wild-eyed radio preacher rolls up to explain that, "Something like this could only originate in Hollywood." And in this, as in all things, he preaches the truth.

2012 is a truly epic movie in every sense of the word, the sort of film that leaves you with a nice feeling of fulfilment which a lot of films today tend to lack. Upon watching it myself I remember sitting back afterwards and just thinking, WOW!

There were Mike and Pat with their two daughters who had flown over, one from the UK and the other from Australia, in order to celebrate Mike's 60th birthday which had taken place the previous day. Happy birthday Mike.

Snooker fans, heed this!

Lurking at the back of Reflections is the nude base of a full size snooker table. Chris has arranged for it to be recovered in proper baize and the table should be "ready for action" in early March.

When you want a cold roast dinner do what Reflections Chris does - go to Lykes. No, the grub isn't usually cold but Tim will supply a cool roast dinner on a proper plate, covered in cling film, for you to pop into the microwave once you get home. Unfortunately the Lykes plates are square, so instead of going round and round they tend to "clunk, clunk"!

On the same subject, in mid January another "old timer", Maurice Bowater, died.

I popped into Spectrum radio on my way back from a visit to DanniellsFox on the second floor of the Parque Comercial. I was just in time to catch them putting the finishing touches to a new weekly "soap opera" that will be launched at the same time as this issue goes off for printing in Almería. Shades of The Archers, what?

If you know somebody who wishes to start an internet cafe, or maybe upgrade their existing internet cafe, I have seen some very nifty machines which automatically wipe themselves clean after every user - viruses and all. You can get them from Mark, in Roly’s Too in Las Buganvillas.

The weather is never satisfactory, is it? Most years farmers complain about the drought.

“Muy Bien’s” Funeral Alan Lake’s Funeral, attended by approximately 150 people, was held in the Mojácar Tanatorio at 4.00 pm on Friday 29th January 2010, a glorious sunny day. Unfortunately, due to insufficient space or seating, half of those attending had to stand outside the chapel which resulted in their being unable to hear the quieter speakers. Alan had asked for a non-religious service with music of his choice.

The introductory piece was “Conquest of Paradise”, composed by Vangelis in 1992. Other pieces were “You’re the Voice” by John Farnham (1986) and “Young Girl” by Gary Puckett and the Union Gap (1968). The music was interspersed by many speakers paying tribute to Alan, before the ironic final tune, by The Animals, Alan’s theme song, “We Gotta Get Out of This Place”.

Thomas Galbraith, “Major Tom”, opened with memories of Alan’s days as owner of Lykes Bar from the late 1980s and, appropriately for the day of the funeral, recalled the time of Hallowe’en when Alan had had a coffin installed in the bar for the event.

Petter Finne, of Talismán, remembered Alan as being an ‘asset’ to the area and someone who will be sadly missed. He also read this poem:

The End of Sentience The day I die, that's it. I'm dead. Remember, thoughout your sighing, That the act of life, of birth and being, includes the act of dying.

No platitudes, no priests, no tales of life in the everlasting.

Remember me for what I was .... and gently regret my passing.

Yet once I die, that's it. I'm dead! If you wish to, you may pray.

But I believe not in an after-life: For me, sentience ends that day.

So judge not my life by piety, but by things for which I stood.

Now farmers, especially those growing water melons and honeydews, are complaining that the sodden, flooded soil means the fruit cannot flourish.

I see the mayor of Gador, near Almería, has initiated an austerity programme. One of its provisions is to limit all councillors’ mobile phone bills re-imbursements to a mere 25 euros per month. Given a politician's propensity to garrulousness, this is akin to a gagging order!

A few weeks ago road works started near “beach bar row”. A semi-circular roadway was built and it looked as though a really sensible roundabout was being created. This would have solved congestion from cars attempting to park on the beach, and also could have made campsite access safer by allowing camper vans to slip into the traffic and then change direction thanks to the roundabout. I should have known better! It now appears that it will be the usual idiotic and dangerous nightmare of a slip road, from where motorists attempt to cross both lanes in one go! Why, when the space for a roundabout is available, is such a ridiculous junction being built?

I see that Mojácar's budget for

2010 has been unanimously approved and subsequently published in the official bulletin. It plans to spend 8.4 million euros.

Seprona, the environmental protection arm of the Guardia Civil, is stepping up its surveillance against illegal activities. A recent Seprona patrol along the fringes of the dam at Cuevas spotted an inflatable boat carrying three men, fishing the waters with a large commercial net. On investigation they found that an estimated 100 kilos of carp had been caught. The ones that were still alive were put back into the water and the men have been charged with contravening law number 8 of 2003, which protects wild flora and fauna.

Whilst out shopping I saw an interesting looking packet of sausages marketed by "El Pozo".

The list of ingredients, in Spanish, showed pork as 86%, then various fillers and flavours, including garlic, capsicum, mustard, celery, and natural spices. I had decided to buy it until I spotted the final ingredient: "flavour enhancer". Why, with all those superb flavours already present, does El Pozo still have to add Monosodium bloody Glutamate?

Bootsie, a long time friend and workmate from the UK, remembered Alan for their trucking days in England in the 1970s.

Charlie Alman, from Sundance Spas, was Alan’s last boss before Alan had to retire when he became ill. Charlie spoke of Alan’s escapades with the company vehicles and had everyone laughing as he recounted the tale of a particularly troublesome van, which eventually caught fire, seemingly spontaneously!

Veronica Flitney, a long time friend from Alan’s Lykes and La Paratá days, spoke of Alan’s strength of character which will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

Jim Bryce, of the Cave Bar, spoke of how Alan loved to wind people up and of the tales Alan used to tell of his past. One of Alan’s stories, Jim related, had been about their son, Andy, as a toddler. Once, when Alan had been trying to sell a second hand car to a prospective purchaser, little Andy had helpfully piped up: ‘It’s a bit dodgy underneath mate.’ Needless to say, it did not sell !

Jo de Lima spoke on behalf of the whole De Lima family who, over a period of years, had become close to Alan’s heart. The words that Jo then read were written by a very special person, their 13 year old son, Luc.

This Is For You Alan Sorry I could not be there to see you off mate but I will come and visit you - I promise. We all knew him as ‘Muy Bien’ coz he woz a muy bien fella. I first met him when my dad started working at Northovers. He woz the best friend my dad could have ever had. He woz one of a kind in my opinion and I’m sure in everyone elses too. My dad could not have met a more nicer person. At first when my dad introduced me to him I found him different, but as I got to know him more and more I liked him more and more. My dad came to like him so much that he would trust him with his life. Wish you were still here.

We all love you and always will.

Rest in peace mate, Luc. Jo ended with a thank you for having had the pleasure of knowing a truly great guy and for giving them Maggi as a forever friend.

Tony, Alan’s brother, then thanked the speakers for their kind words and for their strength in being able to deliver them.

Alan’s wife, Maggi, was the last to say a few words. She spoke briefly to say that Alan certainly was ‘different’ and that there would never be another like him.

Flower: Jonquil The word 'March' comes from the Roman 'Martius'. This was originally the first month of the Roman calendar and was named after Mars, the god of war.

The Anglo-Saxons called the month Hlyd monath which means Stormy month, or Hraed monath which means Rugged month.

All through Lent the traditional games played are marbles and skipping. The games were stopped on the stroke of twelve noon on Good Friday, which in some places was called Marble Day or Long Rope Day. The game of marbles has been played for hundreds of years and some historians say that it might have been started by rolling eggs. In the past, round stones, hazelnuts, round balls of baked clay and even cherry stones have been used.

An old superstition claimed that if Easter should fall on Lady Day (March 25th) then some disaster would shortly follow.

The last three days of March were said to be borrowed from April.

One of the flowers most associated with March is the narcissus (wild daffodil), named after the boy in Greek mythology, who was changed into a flower. Narcissus is also known as the Lent Lily because it blooms in early spring with the blooms usually dropping before Easter. It is the main daffodil species of Britain.

The daffodil became a popular Welsh symbol in the 19th Century. Lloyd George used it to symbolise Wales at the 1911 Investiture and in official publications. In England the daffodil inspired, amongst others, William Wordsworth to write his famous poem "Daffodils."

Like most months, March weather lore has many old sayings - 'When March comes in like a lion, it goes out like a lamb.'

National Days are not celebrated in Britain in the same way as they are in a number of other countries. Only St Patrick's Day in Northern Ireland (and the republic of Ireland) and St Andrew's Day in Scotland (from 2007) are taken as an official holiday.

All the other national days are normal working days.

St David’s Day (1st March) is celebrated in Wales in honour of St David (Dewi Sant), the patron saint of Wales. St David was a Celtic monk, abbot and bishop, who lived in the sixth century. He spread the word of Christianity across Wales. The most famous story about Saint David tells of how he was preaching to a huge crowd when the ground rose up so that he was standing on a hill giving everyone a better chance of hearing him.

St David's Day is commemorated by the wearing of daffodils or leeks. Both plants PAGE 28

are traditionally regarded as national emblems. There are many explanations of how the leek came to be adopted as the national emblem of Wales. One is that St David advised the Welsh, on the eve of battle with the Saxons, to wear leeks in their caps to distinguish friend from the enemy.

Shakespeare mentions in Henry V, that the Welsh archers wore leeks at the battle of Agincourt in 1415. Some children dress in their national costume, a tall black hat, white frilled cap and long dress. The national flag of Wales, depicting a fiery red dragon (Y Ddraig Goch) against a green and white background, is also flown.

St Piran's Day (Dydh sen Pyran) (March 5th) is the National day of Cornwall (Cornish: Kernow).

The flag of St Piran, also the Cornish flag, symbolises the discovery of tin by the saint as the white metal flowed from the black rock. According to legend, St Piran, the most famous of the Irish saints, sailed to Cornwall on a millstone. He was cast into the Atlantic, with the millstone tied around his neck, by people jealous of his power to heal and work miracles. As he was thrown off the cliff there was a bolt of lightning and a crash of thunder, as he reached the sea the storm suddenly abated, the sun came out and St Piran could be seen seated peacefully on the millstone now floating on the surface of the water. It bore him safely across to Cornwall and he landed between Newquay and Perranporth at Perran Beach, to which he gave his name. Piran built himself a small chapel in Penhale Sands and his first disciples were said to be a badger, a fox and a bear.

Mother’s Day / Mothering Sunday (14th March 2010) has been celebrated in the UK on the fourth Sunday in Lent since at least the 16th century. It was often called Refreshment Sunday because the fasting rules for Lent were relaxed, in honour of the Christian Bible story, 'Feeding of the Five Thousand'. Many churches give the children in the congregation a little bunch of spring flowers to give to their Mothers as a thank you for all their care and love throughout the year.

Young British girls and boys 'in service' were only allowed one day to visit their family each year. This was usually Mothering Sunday. Often the housekeeper or cook would allow the maids to bake a ‘Simnel’ cake to take home for their mother.

Sometimes a gift of eggs; or flowers from the garden (or hothouse) was allowed.

Flowers were traditional, as the young girls and boys would have to walk home to their village, and could gather them on their way home through the meadows.

The Simnel cake is a light fruit cake covered in marzipan (almond paste) and is more commonly now made for and eaten during Lent or at Easter in Great Britain, Ireland and some other countries. A layer of marzipan is also baked into the middle of

Gemstone: Bloodstone the cake. The top of the cake, around the edge, is decorated with eleven marzipan balls to represent the true disciples of Jesus; Judas is omitted. In some variations Christ is also represented, by a ball placed at the centre. The word simnel probably derived from the Latin word ‘simila’, meaning fine, wheaten flour from which the cakes were made.

St Patrick's Day is celebrated in the whole of Ireland on 17th March, in honour of St Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland.

Lady Day (25th March) is the British name for the Christian festival of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. Until 1752 it was the beginning of the legal year in England, and it is still a quarter day (date for the payment of quarterly rates or dues).

Palm Sunday (28th March 2010) the sixth and last Sunday of Lent and the beginning of Holy Week. Holy Week, which ends on Easter Monday, commemorates events in the last days of Jesus' life.

On Palm Sunday in England children are given crosses made from single palm leaves. Traditionally, many churches will have a procession in or around the church while people sing songs of praise and wave palm leaves. In some areas of the country Palm Sunday was a traditional day for visiting wells and leaving an offering for the spirit of the well. In some places pins were dropped into the wells whilst in other places rags were hung around the outside.

It was thought by doing this the spirit of the well would keep the water fresh and clean.

Sallow, or pussy willow, was used in many places as a palm substitute, and was commonly known as English Palm amongst country folk. Box, yew, hazel, common willow and daffodils were other alternatives in the days before palm was easily available as an import from Spain.

In some English churches small buns called pax cakes (symbolic of peace and goodwill) are given to the congregation as they leave after a Palm Sunday service.

Palm Sunday also has the nick name 'Fig Sunday' because Christ had wanted to eat some when travelling to Jerusalem (Mark 11: 12-14). Figs were once traditionally eaten on this day.

Any left over Palm Crosses are kept and burned to make ashes for next years Ash Wednesday services.

Oranges and Lemons Day, London (31st March). Local primary school children gather at the church of St Clements Dane to attend a service. They recite the famous nursery rhyme and, on occasions, play the tune on hand bells. At the end of the service, the children are presented with an orange and a lemon from a table outside the church.

Molly Malone alive and well in Almería The famous "Quiz of Quizzes" formerly run in the Levante by Dubliners Ray and Siobhan for the benefit of ASPRODALBA, has new organisers.

"In Dublin's fair city, where the girls are so pretty, I first set my eyes on sweet Molly Malone, As she wheeled her wheel-barrow, Through streets broad and narrow, Crying, "Cockles and mussels, alive, alive, oh!"

So starts the popular Irish song, Molly Malone - about a beautiful fishmonger who plied her trade on the streets of Dublin, but who died young, of a fever. It has since become the unofficial anthem of the city and the lady herself has been further immortalised in a statue erected in Dublin in 1987.

But here in Almería we have our very own Molly Malone … thanks to the efforts of Dubliners Ray and Siobhan who, since 2004, have sponsored and run the Molly Malone "Quiz of Quizzes" - an annual competition between the bars, bowling clubs and other organisations, to see who has the best quiz team in the region. Last year, this grand prize was won by Frankie’s Bar on Vera Playa (so they will be hosting the event in 2010) but previous winners have included The Jolly Lemon in Mojácar, Music Musica, The Almanzora Group of Friends, and the Old Tavern.

This year however, Ray and Siobhan have decided to relinquish the responsibility of actually running the event and, in a ceremonial presentation at Frankie’s Bar on the 2nd of February, they officially handed over the quiz to Bel and Rob Old - residents of Vera Playa and themselves accomplished quizzers. Ray and Siobhan will continue to sponsor the event, supply the prizes and support it as they always have done, raising money for Asprodalba - a local centre for

people with learning difficulties, which is very dear to their hearts. "It all started with us raising small funds for St. Patrick's Day on the Los Gallardos Campsite," said Siobhan, "but became an 'event' when Spectrum Radio began hosting the Monday night quiz on the campsite. We returned form Ireland one year, with one of the special little Molly Malone trophies and so the quiz got its name. "Many past competitors and supporters attended the event including members of last year's winning team David and Val Willmin along with Andy Cooper from Cabrera Bowling, and many from Los Gallardos such as Bill White of the Coffin Dodgers, Anne Tuplin, Social Secretary, and of course 'Uncle Albert' and 'Noah'. "Over the years, almost 18,000 euros has been raised for Asprodalba and much fun has been had to see who can produce the finest team of quizzers in the area," added Ray. In a rallying call Siobhan said "It is vital in these difficult times to support the bars and restaurants that did so much for good causes like Asprodalba."

The 2010 quiz will be held in Frankie’s Bar, Vera Playa on Sunday 28th March at 5:00 o'clock.

Entries require a minimum of 50 euros as a donation to Asprodalba (although some teams raise substantially more by collecting throughout the year on their individual quiz nights). There will also be a raffle on the day and Rob and Bel are asking for donations of prizes for the event.

ARTHUR (BAGPUSS) Red Persian, approx. 9 years My name is ARTHUR but they call me BAGPUSS because right now I resemble that old shaggy cloth cat. I am feeling and looking very sad because, at almost 9 years of age, my previous owner does not want me anymore, unfortunately he works all day and does not have the time or patience to give me my daily eye drops and my long coat requires

regular grooming to keep it healthy and free of tangles.

Consequently my eyes have suffered, but they are improving day-by-day now that some kind people apply my drops for me, and they are giving me nice brushes. I did not want to have my photo taken as I was not looking my best and I am very proud. I am told that I am a big, handsome, loveable old boy with a typical Persian placid nature.

ARTHUR requires a mature, peaceful environment in which to spend his twilight years, with a loving owner who has time to invest in him to keep his coat in excellent condition and administer his eye drops (please take into account the cost of his drops, a very small expense, but one that has to be considered nevertheless)

Commercial blue fin tuna fishing looks like it will be banned next year by Europe but line and rod caught fish may not be counted and still landed, at the moment we believe it’s illegal to land one of these fish in Andalucia at least.

The most recent batch of boat and shore fishing licenses were put in this week. Bridie will not go again until sometime in April as she is away in March.

Andalucian course licenses will be put in during the next few days as our loophole appears to be still open. I think the reason this has happened is because the 6 regions that were going to get together haven’t finalised it yet. I wonder if this is because of rumours of a new European course license that will cover all countries, meaning one license will cover all member states.

The big BUT is that a course and test is likely to be taken and passed similar to Andalucia’s, not that I’m suggesting it be a 24 hour one.

A European wide license is what I’m also told is also going to happen with beach and boat fishing, but with no course and test being involved. It is already the case that any European angler can sea fish in any other EU country as long as he or she has a valid license for one of those countries. This of course doesn’t help the Brits or Irish as a license

doesn’t exist. Which is why they have to apply for Andalucian beach and boat licenses to fish here. It is likely the British authorities didn’t bring in their proposed sea license last year because they knew this was coming and not as is thought by anglers that their furore made politicians change their minds, as if eh?

“Captain (Graham) Gnome” came down to the Beachcomber to say goodbye to me the other day, I said “I’m not going anywhere, it’s my children and grandchildren that are leaving Spain”.

He and his friends caught only 16 fish on the one day he managed to get the boat out. But they did catch some unusual things, three octopuses, a hermit crab! A blue mouthed rose bellied rockfish caught in only 90 feet, I’ve never heard of one being in less than 300 feet. They also landed wide eyed flounders, a

CLEO IS STILL MISSING Although she has been sighted, the last time in Turre / Los Gallardos area, by the time the owners got there she was nowhere to be found, they do however thank all those who have taken the time to call.

Cleo, a female Galgo Español wearing a red collar, has been missing from the Bédar area since Sunday 17th January. She is a much loved pet and we desperately want her back home. Cleo, is microchipped and neutered (so no use to anyone for breeding purposes). Cleo also has a very noticeable scar running the entire length of her right back leg.

... to Edel Donlon and Barry Clark who announced there engagement recently in Egypt.

Edel & Barry have lived in both Mojacar and Turre for many years and will celebrate there wedding with family and friends here in 2011.

(I was very happy to hear this news. I used to work with Barry for a rather unscrupulous Estate Agent by the name of Susan Thornhill)

Maurice Bowater A celebration of the life of Maurice Bowater, who died on 12th February 2010 was held at Tanatorio Mojácar on 17th February.

Maurice and his wife Mary first came to Mojácar in August 1988 where they bought an apartment at La Mata from developer Michael Gem Snr. From that moment on, as far as Maurice was concerned, there was no other place to be and when they retired in February 1998 they settled here permanently. Despite the fact that in the last few years they had travelled extensively, Maurice was always anxious to get back ‘home’.

A Chartered Mechanical Engineer by profession, keen sportsman and music lover it was his love of bowling which first attracted him to the area and of course, all who knew him were only too aware that he was a fervent supporter of his home town team, Middlesbrough F.C. (Boro).

Over the years he sang with several choirs and performed with the Indalo Players.

Unfortunately, Maurice suffered several serious illnesses in recent years and it was testament to his character that the words ‘bravery’ and ‘courage’ cropped up so many times in the dozens of tributes, both spoken and written from friends in Spain and the UK and indeed from all parts of the world.

Mary would like to thank sincerely their many friends including Members of the Lodge of Unity No 98 for all their affection and support, which was overwhelming.
