Sunseed Desert Technology at Los Molinos del Rio Aguas welcomed several courses in 2012, including courses on Solar cooking and solar cookers, Stove making, Plastering, Photovoltaics, PedalPowered electricity generators, DIY Solar Hot Water Panels and a very special 7-day residential course on personal and social transformation called Seeding Change. A complete list of courses for 2013 is still to be fully determined. So far the only one scheduled is a weekend course on SEED SAVING: Heirloom and other Open-pollinated Varieties on 8th and 9th June with Bernhard Hartl - an Austrian horticulturist, biochemist and veg enthusiast.

The weekend course consists of 12 hours of theory and practice, presentations, chats, garden walks and practical examples of hand pollination, seed cleaning, building an isolation cage and lots more. This workshop, which will be held in English, does not require previous knowledge and skills though it helps to have gardening experience.

The Spanish government in Madrid has published proposed changes to its national Land Law (Ley de Suelo) aimed at reinvigorating the countries ailing property market. The homeowners association, AUAN, has formally submitted suggested modifications in order to address some of the gaps and injustices which they believe have caused such a loss of confidence in the Andalucian real estate market.

Over twenty residents of La Parata in Mojacar volunteered to join a “workforce” to help clear the rambla that crosses La Avenida de la Parata, at the entry to the estate, on Saturday 27 April. The August and September storms last year caused major damage to the rambla, leaving a significant amount of dead and decaying vegetation and debris at the estate’s entrance and, significantly, the road surface of the La Avenida was removed by the floodwater.

La Parata Residents’ Association paid for the largest skip commercially available for the clearup and by the end of the morning it was filled to overflowing with vegetation and other waste from the rambla. The waterwheel that marks the entrance to La Parata has now been (almost) restored to its former glory and the road has been cleared of compacted debris left by the storms, but is still in desperate need of resurfacing.

Roy Oxley, Chairman of La Parata Residents’ Association, said: “This was a great effort from a large number of people who live on this lovely estate to help improve its appearance for owners, residents, visitors and

holidaymakers alike. Unfortunately, the association does not have the funds to repair the roads at the entrance and in other areas of the estate that suffered damage in the late summer and many that have been neglected over the years. We hope that our work may prompt the town hall to match our efforts and bring the roads here up to scratch.”

THE first baby in 45 years has been born in the small village of Los Giles (approx. 10 kms outside Los Gallardos) with fewer than 100 inhabitants. Baby Ainara has caused a stir in Los Giles, given that nobody has been born to anyone living in the village since 1968. The population has since declined as a result, and only around 60 people are on the census.

Young first-time parents Beatriz and Iker wanted their child to 'grow up close to nature' and near her maternal grandparents. Nearly everyone in Los Giles has had a chance to hold Ainara at least once, and her parents constantly receive visits from their neighbours.

And finally … an article in the Ideal entitled ‘Mojácar, Talibán’ regarding Mojácar's new-found notoriety in the international press thanks to the mayor’s plan to ban loud music, domino playing, drinking while standing up and wearing high heels when in one's apartment, to give some examples, is giving the impression that the mayor wants to turn the environment of Mojacar into something more like a cemetery than a tourist town. That whilst those in close proximity to the area may be able to form a realistic picture of what is happening here, the fact that the plans are being ‘exported’ will generate the opinion of Taliban control throughout the municipality and goes on to compare the new ruling with that of the Afghanistan tribal lords who generally prohibit any activity of a playful nature.

The ordinance for the regulation of noise contamination was approved only by the PP party at the meeting of 16th April. Despite the initial proposal being modified and improved all of the opposition parties voted against this by-law claiming its prohibition of many Continued on page 6

Cooking with THE CRAZY COW SAUTEED CHICKEN LIVERS with paprika and a cream sherry sauce (serves 2) 10 cleaned chicken livers 1 tbsp of olive oil 1 small onion finely chopped 2 small garlic cloves finely chopped 1 tsp of thyme (fresh or dried) 3 tbsp of sweet sherry 1 small cup of cooking cream Half a tsp of paprika Salt and pepper to taste

Heat the oil in a large frying pan and fry the onion, garlic, chicken livers and thyme for 5 mins. Stir in the sherry and cream, cook for 3/4 mins. Sprinkle in the paprika and add the salt and pepper to taste.

Serve immediately with crusty or toasted bread and a large glass of cold white wine ... Sooo good!

ROASTED VEG (Mojete) (serves 2) 2 red peppers (sliced) 2 green peppers (sliced) 2 yellow peppers (sliced) 6 large tomatoes (quartered) 1 large onion (red if poss) 2 cloves of garlic (halved) 1 large cup of small mushrooms 1 small cup of black pitted olives 1 tsp of brown sugar 2 tbsp of dry sherry

3 tbsp of olive oil 3 fresh rosemary sprigs Salt and pepper to taste Fresh crusty bread to serve

Pre heat the oven to 200C/Gas 6. Cut the peppers and onion into large slices. Place the peppers, onion, mushrooms, olives, garlic and ­tomatoes in a large roasting tin, pour over the sherry and sprinkle the sugar. Season with salt and pepper. Cover with tin foil and cook in the oven for 30 mins.

After this time remove the foil and gently stir the veg, drizzle with olive oil and add the rosemary. Return to the oven for another 15 mins.

Serve hot or cold with crusty white bread and an ice cold beer ... Happy days!

Mojacar business association, ACEM, organised two m ­ eetings at the Hotel Marazul, to ­advise and discuss any queries and ­obligations regarding the by-law, together with four lawyers, Jose M ­ anuel ­Torres Rollón, Juan ­Antonio ­Perez, ­Mariano Garfias Espejo and ­Mariano Vargas who believe it could be unconstitutional. Apart from the legal uncertainty in its implementation with there being no set noise level to be adhered to.

It is, in the words of the mayoress, “What we think.”

President of ACEM, Karin ­Schroter stated that whilst it is a good ­intention of the town hall to regulate the noise level to ­protect residents, the measurement of noise should be determined using proper equipment.

This ordinance is available to the public and there is a 30 day time period for allegations ­before it is ­officially put into ­practice, allegations will delay this proce­

dure and/or possibly change it in some way.

And finally, finally …. At the extraordinary plenary meeting of 26th April there were 5 points on the agenda. The first 4 points were concerning first ­occupation licenses that the Mayor and her ­ team ­ granted illegally and the process to void these licenses is ­ nearly finished after the Junta de Andalucia made the Mayor aware of her errors by granting the licenses with legal and technical ­ reports both being negative in all four cases. The last point was to elect the new justice of peace.

It’s that time of year again when you need to be thinking about a service on your car’s air-con ­system.

Air-conditioning problems tend to be noticed at the start of summer as the weather hots up. In the climate that we live in, the last thing you need is to switch on your air-con and get blasted with warm air. An ­air-con service by COOL-AIR can prevent this!

A lot of people are under the impression that using your a­ ir-con uses a lot more petrol or diesel, this, in fact, is m ­ inimal. Years ago the compressor on a car was huge and it did affect fuel ­consumption quite dramatically, now, nearly all c­ ompressors are Japanese and are very small so barely affect fuel c­ onsumption at all, actually less than 2%, so the benefits you get from using your air-con far outweigh the minimal cost.

Although air-conditioning represents less than 4% of all ­mechanical failure on a modern car it is the third most e­ xpensive to repair ­after the engine and the gearbox. It is ­advisable to use your air-con for at least 10 minutes a week and get it ­serviced every 12 to 18 months. Really it is all about p ­ reventative ­maintenance, if you did not put oil in your car’s engine you would expect it to run dry and seize up. It is just the same with your air-con. The main c­ omponent is the c­ ompressor and this needs to be kept lubricated with a s­ pecial kind of oil that mixes with the refrigerant. If this is not done then your c­ ompressor WILL seize up. If your air-con is r­egularly serviced the c­ ompressor should last the life of the car.

It is a “small/great project” that now needs regular support to ­guarantee its ­sustainability.

Established with the financial support of some friends in ­November 2012 by Louis Yeboah Womder Doe, an artist from Ghana aware of the importance of education, the Universal W ­ onderful Street ­Academy is taking children off the streets and into a classroom where they are educated, clothed and fed with one meal a day at no cost.

The Organization runs a non-formal school from 7.30am to 3.00pm Monday to Friday for c­ hildren aged 6 to 16 years. In the school the children learn Maths, Science and how to write and read English. They also perform sport and cultural ­activities r­elated to their own culture such as African Drumming & ­Dancing and ­create their own A ­ frican Arts & Crafts.

SPANISH SOLDIERS PREPARE FOR ENGLISH EXAMS The Mojácar area has once again hosted a group of six Spanish soldiers from the Legion military base in Viator, Almeria. After t­ aking part in a two week intensive course in the city, all were whisked off to Mojácar and the surrounding towns to experience a ‘total ­immersion’ course in English in order to prepare them for their forthcoming important ­military language exams. Each student stayed with an English speaking family for the week as part of the extremely beneficial ‘Homestay’ part of the course. Each morning was spent with further intensive lessons before the students returned to their families to practice their conversation skills.

As well as partaking in lots of social activities with their hosts, the students received a warm welcome by founders Audrey and Mike Hathaway at the weekly Mojácar Club T­ aurino meeting. The students were all given a chance to chat to members and show off their newly acquired speaking skills by making a short speech before sampling Indian ­cuisine for the first time at an end of course lunch.

The students were unanimous in their thanks to the teachers for their support and encouragement and, to the host families who had ­welcomed them so warmly into their homes, giving them an ­unforgettable experience.

The course was o ­rganised by A ­ndrew ­ Mortimer, a multi-lingual ­trainer and ­interpreter based in Roquetas, who has worked at the Spanish Legion Brigade bases in Viator, Almería and Ronda, Málaga for twelve years. His team of teachers, who have all been involved with numerous military courses include, Wendy Gretton from Turre and Patrick and Jill Bennett from Mojácar.

The Rose Singers Anniversary Concert On the 19th and 20th April the Rose Singers ­ celebrated their 10th Anniversary as a choir with a splendid ­ concert entitled ‘A ­Bouquet of R ­ oses’. I went to The ­Living ­Water Church an ideal venue with disabled access and ­enjoyed a varied ­programme of ­sacred and secular ­music, this ­included one song taken from one of their ­concerts during the ­previous ten years and a piece called Salve ­ Regina ­ especially composed for them by Peter Stearn. It was a nice balanced programme but I p ­ articularly enjoyed W ­ ichery Wood which made me laugh and a­ dmire the­ ­linguistic ­dexterity of the l­adies. The Snow was ­beautifully sung and was a­ ccompanied by S­ tuart Green on viola and Wendy W ­ aldock on cello.

These two talented musicians ­ accompanied

by Pamela Peters on piano gave an uplifting ­rendition of The ­Entertainer by Scott Joplin.

A little Andrew Lloyd Webber, a pot pourri of Ivor Novello by Lyn Ferris, a tribute to Irvin Berlin and a lovely 1940s medley brought the evening to a close. Congratulations to all the members of The Rose Singers for some lovely choral ­singing and ­delightful modern ditties throughout the last ten years and for bringing Page 24

some talented c­lassical musicians to enhance their concerts from time to time. Thank you, from a fan.

The Rose Singers “As We Were” 10 years ago Tina Van Der Klooster, Janet Rose and Lyn Ferris, all with musical backgrounds, t­ ogether with Nicky Black and Odile ­Mailhac, met to discuss f­orming a small singing group, aiming to fill the gap in the classical m ­ usic scene of the area. Ruth Wood joined in January 2003 and in the spring of

that year they performed their ­debut concert at the Anglican Chaplaincy in ­Mojácar with guest ­accompanist, the late ­Peter Goodman. Over the years As their audiences have changed so has their repertoire, choosing their programmes to try to please ­everyone, from sacred and secular through to modern and ­ ‘up-beat’ songs. In 2005, Pamela Peters ­became their accompanist, a much sought after pianist both here and the U.K. In 2006 Alison Jackson agreed to direct the choir and with her wealth of musical talent and ­experience has shaped the choir during its many ­transitions. There are now 12 singers in the group and they are delighted to welcome ­assistant, Wendy Waldock, the daughter of the late Peter G ­ oodman.

Keeping these tortoises in captivity is not to be recommended as they have very specif ic needs and many die prematurely as a result of poor diet lacking in calcium and the necessary vitamins. It is also likely that with a life span of 50 to 100 years, it may outlive its owner making it particularly vulnerable.

As can be seen from the photographs the size of these tortoises can vary and they can grow as large as 35cm in length.

The bee eaters are back, these two were captured by Val Hicks at Huerta Nueva, Los Gallardos.

True to their name, they do eat bees but they also prey on dragonflies, moths, termites, butterflies - just about anything that flies. When the bird chases a bee, it matches its prey’s every twist and swoop. After a midair snatch, the bee-eater returns to its perch to devenom the bee - a brutally efficient operation. Grasping the bee in its beak, the bird bashes the insect’s head on one side of the branch, then rubs its abdomen on the other. The rubbing causes the stunned, sometimes headless bee to flush its toxins.

You Can Not Be Serious

By The Other Half I have never really given them much thought – women’s handbags, that is. They are ubiquitous; all women have them, sometimes in great numbers.

It was the death of Baroness Thatcher, that most Marmite of political figures, that brought the handbag to my attention. She always had a squareish, sensible handbag that could have been used as a meaningful weapon if the occasion demanded.

I fell to wondering, what if our male Prime Ministers were to have handbags? I imagine that if David Cameron had a handbag it would probably be a patent leather slim-line model in black, to go with his well-groomed appearance.

On the other hand, or would it be arm, Clegg would prefer an altogether floppier and less tailored but nevertheless expensive Nubuck model in taupe, while goodness only knows what young Miliband would fancy, but I bet it would have lots of internal compartments!

I decided to seek enlightenment from an expert, so I asked the Higher Authority ‘Why do women have handbags?’

‘To keep our stuff in.’ she answered absentmindedly, rummaging around in the depth of her particularly cavernous latest acquisition.

‘Stuff we need.’

I was about to ask ‘What stuff?’ but thought better of it. Sometimes ignorance is preferable to knowledge.

But the question remains - a woman’s handbag holds more mysteries than the Mariana Trench or the Bermuda Triangle. What can it be that they need and can not do without on even the shortest venture out of doors?

She must have read my thoughts. ‘Like a paper hankie, for instance.’ She answered the unasked question as she fished a pack of them out of the bag and blew her nose.

OK, the average woman is probably well advised to have a receptacle for the carrying of paper hankies – but what about the Queen? Why should she have to carry her own handbag?

Wherever she goes she is accompanied by a pedigree posse of well-bred female assistants, all carrying handbags. Could not one of them carry the Royal tissues?

All she would have to do is say sotto voce ‘Our nose is running,’ and one of them could discretely slip her a Kleenex without her having to interrupt her progress along yet another lineup of the parochial office holders whose town she is dignifying with her presence.

In fact, there is an Order of the Bath, and the Garter – could she not free herself from the bothersome bag and institute and Order of the Handbag, and have someone carry it for her?

After all, she is the Queen. I’ll bet Royalty of old never carried their own hankies!

Middle of April, Mojacar Playa, 25 degrees in the shade... Some would say that it is the perfect weather to go to the beach and enjoy the sun. Not the students of the Taekwondo Mojacar Club.

They preferred to come to the club and give it all, showing their skills and techniques, sparring against one another and even, for the more advanced students, against two, three and more opponents. It was very demanding, there were some bruises and a lot of sweat, but above all, it was fun… Why would they do that? Simply to show to their instructor that they were ready, that they deserved to receive their next belt.

All the students fought like lions, tackling all the obstacles thrown at them with the perseverance

and indomitable spirit that characterizes them, throwing amazing kicks and skilful punches, then finished the first part of their grading by breaking boards with powerful foot and hand techniques, only to be back to the training hall again the following morning where they had to show their technical knowledge in front of a panel of black belt instructors (Mr Serge Dewrée, Miss Ruby MilesKirby and Mr Ossian Guerrero Green) who judged them on their physical and mental strength, their knowledge of Korean words and, most of all, their ability to perform patterns of all kinds under stress

In the Rainbow category, Best Student Trophy was granted to Ms Sophia Friend and a special star medal was awarded for continuous effort to Mr Joshua Lee and Miss Bobbi BoothRoberts.

Mr Joe Noble was promoted to the Junior’s class.

In the Junior-Adult category, in view of the quality of the fights

and the broad knowledge displayed, Best Student Trophy was granted to Miss Havana Thompson (Junior) and to Mrs Jodie Escott Dewrée (Adult) and a special medal was awarded to Miss Osaia Reding Commaille, Mr Harry Booth-Roberts, Miss Laima Diaz Vepstas and Ms Laura Linschoten.

Mr Dewrée, the club instructor said: “The belt that was given to you shows that you have reached a higher level.

There is nothing more rewarding than to know that you have done everything you could to get this belt and that you truly deserve it. Well done to all of you”.

Moors and Christians The Moors and Christians Fiesta will take place this year on the 7th, 8th and 9th of June. It is an extra special year, as it’s the 25th ­anniversary since this popular fiesta began in Mojácar! The first event, in 1988, commemorated the 500th ­anniversary of the ­Moorish submission to the Christian forces in 1488 and since then it has grown from strength to strength.

We are in for a special treat this year as celebrations for this ­additional 525th anniversary will bring the 1st Provincial ­Conference of the ­Fiesta and a whole weekend of cultural events with the ­support of the Diputación de Almeria.

It will start on the 31st May at 8pm with the inauguration of Jill ­Bennett’s Moors and Christians exhibition at the Centro de Arte ­(Mojácar Fuente) which she is organising with the ­Ayuntamiento and the Moors and Christian’s Association, Al Mosaquer. The ­exhibition will include examples of Jill’s art, the collection of posters from the last 25 years, costumes, films, ­memorabilia and much more. The theme will continue all weekend with music, dance, gastronomy and other cultural events in Mojácar ­Pueblo. Jill has for the third time designed the fiesta poster which this year has a strong anniversary theme, depicting the historic ­agreement that took place at Mojácar Fuente in 1488. Jill said, ‘It’s a real honour to have my work chosen again, particularly for this special year, and to be involved in such an exciting event.’
