April is set to be a busy month this year with Mother ’s Day, St. Georges Day and Easter. Let me know where you’ll be and I’ll send photographer Ian. In fact I’ve actually got a busy March as on top of everything else I am moving house, but it will be so worth it.

A little while ago I told you about Julian of Hair Design having the agency for some state of the art wigs for anyone who has suffered hair loss through chemotherapy or some other reason. He actually has a sample of one in now for anyone to look at and try. (For those who missed it they are made from monofibre so only need washing, some have a ‘memory cap’ which moulds itself to the shape of your head. If your hot water system uses gas, and if it doesn't seem to be heating the water as effectively as before, or if it cuts out unexpectedly, it probably needs nothing more drastic than to be de-furred, just like your kettle. A good plumber should own a simple apparatus to pump water, laced with "decal", round and round your heater for a couple of hours - after which it should be as good as new. It's very unlikely that you need to buy an expensive new heater. A cheap de-furring almost always does the trick.

The news according to The Entertainer Online - Most of the following is true!

Health Tourism - It seems that ‘health tourism’ as the Spanish laconically call those Northern Europeans who use local hospitals, is to be controlled (further). We all come here for our operations and then, without so much as a ‘gracias España’, whizz back to the arms of our loved ones. Well, that’s what the Spanish press like to suggest and, since we have no voice in Europe, who is to say that they are wrong? So, Huércal Overa hospital ceases to be the destination of ‘health tourism’ thanks to a directive from the EU. The article says: ‘Huércal Overa hospital covers some 40,000 Europeans in the Levante area of the province and the region of Almanzora. The quality treatment from this hospital means that many have come here for ‘tourism’ merely to receive expensive medical treatments’.

How this will affect us remains unclear, but as we continue without a voice in Europe (there are 30 million ‘displaced Europeans’ who are improperly represented across Europe), expect more of this kind of behaviour.

Heart of Oak - Cantoria has these four oak trees in a down-town area called Barranquizo. They were planted by British railway engineers (working on the Baza-Lorca line) in around 1890 to remind themselves of home. Now, these oak trees are in danger of being uprooted by a group of people who claim that the trees have oak-disease. Others, meanwhile, are keen to preserve these trees which are, they say, in perfect health. Mojácar Political Intrigue - RosMari’s plan to eviscerate the top of the village with a two million underground car-park for 37 cars (!) has hit a new snag. In the summer, Albert Schröter left the PP and became an independent opposition councillor over the issue, now two coalition councillors, Angel Medina and Carlos Cervantes, have removed their support over the plan and have been, in turn, fired from the Government.

RosMari now has just five councillors out of thirteen and will be obliged to run a ‘government by decree’ until the upcoming elections. At least, the town can breathe for a few more months... In short, if you like the idea of an expensive, all-but-useless mini underground car-park in a pedestrian zone, support the PP in the next elections.

New Football Stadium for Mojácar - ‘One of the largest and most expensive...’, begins the article in the Ideal. The new Mojácar football stadium, inaugurated at a price of 1,750,000 euros, is well worth it, according to the Lady Mayor, because of its sporting, social and, uh, tourist use. Come on you foreigners, book your holidays and bring along a football team... Actually, I’m not sure we have one of our own yet, better bring two teams just in case... Where was I? PAGE 6

Certainly, the location - on Mojácar’s front line next to the riverbed, couldn’t be better, or indeed more obvious. The Opposition think they could have spent a little less, putting a simpler field in a quieter zone. And spending something on finding a team and a trainer.

Towns With a High Foreign Vote - In some towns in Almería, there is a high number of voters coming from abroad. Mostly European, but with a few from some other countries where Spain has made bilateral arrangements.

Interestingly, with the emigrants resident in foreign countries (but still on the local padrón) now not allowed to vote in municipal elections, Mojácar’s ‘Spanish’ numbers have fallen by around 300 ‘votes’, while the ‘foreign resident’ numbers have gone up by about 400.

The PSOE List - The Mojácar PSOE lay claim to be the first party in the town (out of nine or ten) to produce a list for the local elections for May. A list ‘which has contact with all sectors of Mojácar society, made up of a group of people fully aware of the importance of finding answers to the problems of Mojácar’s residents who are, every day, more and more victims of the political potpourri which we have in our town hall’. (nice turn of phrase there).

Showing the party determination to speak for all members of society, and fully bearing in mind that Mojácar is 70% ‘born elsewhere’, the reborn Mojácar PSOE has a token foreigner (‘Gabriel Dann’?) at number eleven.

Just as a matter of interest that might also explain that this reality is as small as it is big, the half way mark on the slider is a salt crystal and a fractional move to the right lands you on an ant. his issue you are coming with me on quite a journey. We shall start off in the region of the ridiculous and then go on to explore the entire universe together, so don’t forget your toothbrush.

Let’s begin, as I did, with my mum.

She’s not really mad. I mean she’s not mad in the sense that she is constantly dosed on mood controlling drugs and regularly taken away for the good of the community and her own safety. She is not mad in that sense, not at all. She does however enjoy “Jigsaw Puzzles”.

Some years ago I set about finding a jigsaw puzzle that my mum would not be able to do. This was no mean feat.

I bought her the Impossipuzzle. A 1000 piece jigsaw with baked beans as the picture, that’s it! Just a big picture of baked beans. Here’s the catch. It’s a different picture of baked beans on both sides of the puzzle.

Within a month … it was done. I have photos to prove it.

this time though. I found what I was looking for on www.firebox.com. This is a site I have written about before.

Firebox.com is the ultimate gift and gadget shopping arena. It is an absolute must to visit if you need to buy a gift for anyone you have ever met. I’ll refrain from boring you with a list of fantastic gift ideas to be found there just take my word for it and go see.

Anyway, back to the new puzzle I found. The pictures on it are based on the artwork of Keith Haring, the activist, and legend of the cartoon inspired illustrations world. This puzzle has been recognized by the chaps at Guinness as being the world’s largest. It has a certificate and everything. It has over 32,000 pieces and is nearly 5.5 metres wide.

It costs about 200 British pounds and weighs about 36 Imperial Pounds (17 kilos). The box comes with its own trolley, for God’s sake. It really is ridiculous and it will keep my mum away from Coronation Street for about a decade. You should get one too.

Apparently they’re going to be big.

BEWARE, we are in the season for the processionary pine caterpillar.

People who live in Spain or travel to Spain with their pets need to know that this is one of the most dangerous natural enemies their animals will come into contact with.

As its name suggests its home is a certain type of pine tree which is very popular here in Spain and is a protected species. The trees are found throughout mediterranean Spain in all types of areas from gardens to small plantations and also in large forests. There is only one generation of caterpillar a year and the nests can be spotted easily, look for white cocoons similar to candy floss in the trees. If you are in an area where you spot these nests you need to leave immediately whether you have animals and/or children with you or not. Just standing under a tree infected by these creatures is enough for you to be contaminated.

Most of the time the caterpillars are not seen but they feed off the pine needles and once they have stripped a tree of all its needles they leave the tree in a long procession to find another pine tree and, therefore, more food. February, March and April are the most likely time to see them on the move.

The processionary line is really attractive to children, they look like the nontoxic hairy caterpillars in the UK. Animals being generally nosy are likely to take an interest too. The long hairs give out poison that irritates the skin, causes allergic reactions and if swallowed can have dire consequences but they don't have to be handled to cause harm, even the tiniest bit of dust from the caterpillar can be enough to cause a reaction. Shake the bottle well before using and take about 1ml of mixture from the bottle in a syringe, then drop the mixture in the ear canal.)

METHODS OF USE: Step 1 - Ear Cleaner Mix - spray 2 or 3 times in each ear every 2 days, massage well behind the ears, allow the dog to shake its head and wipe around the inside of the ear to remove debris ejected during the shaking of the head and wipe the area with dry cotton wool.

Step 2 - Ear Treatment Mix - after Step 1 (the cleaning) is completed, put 2 - 3 drops of the Ear Treatment in each ear.

When the intensive cleaning and treatment routine has improved the state of the ears a routine maintenance should be carried out by putting 1 spray or about 1ml from the EAR CLEANING solution in each ear once a week, again massage gently and wipe away the excess.

Just as a bonus - and nothing to do with ears - the EAR TREATMENT is also very good for Athletes Foot and fungal nail infections.

PLEASE NOTE - if anyone or any animal comes into close contact with these caterpillars then medical or veterinary attention should be sought immediately.

WHAT TO DO - if you have a problem with these caterpillars you can call the "SEPRONA" branch of the Guardia Civil on 062 and ask them to come and get rid of the caterpillars. For more information about SEPRONA there is a web site www.guardiacivil.org although sometimes the site is not available. Your local town hall is another course of action, go to them and ask what their policy is for control and eradication. In individual and small plantations on urbanisations or in towns there should be an eradication system in place, if there isn't one, ask why not. In large forests it is a more complicated problem to solve.

A useful website is www.exosect.com, this site advertises a special trap that emits a low dose female hormone that firstly attracts and then confuses the male moths. The males become covered in the hormone, they all smell like females which results in breeding problems. A trap you can make yourselves is to take a piece of plastic and make it into a cone shape, a bit like the vet puts around the neck of an animal after surgery. It must be large enough to go around the trunk of the tree, make a few small holes around the base of the cone to let out any rainwater. When the caterpillars climb down the tree they become trapped in the cone which of course must be shiny and smooth inside so there is no grip for them to climb out.

NEVER move the caterpillars or their nests nor the branches they have walked along and don't attempt to burn them either. Any disturbance will release hairs and dust into the air. Never attempt to cut down the tree(s) as they are a protected species. Nest material will still contain the "urticating" hairs ("urtica" is Latin for Nettle, a plant we know only too well which produces a rash when touched). The hairs cause, to us and our pets, reactions ranging from mild inflammation and irritation to severe anaphylactic shock. The worst problems occur if you make contact with the caterpillars directly and ingest the hairs either by picking them up, stepping on them, or moving them in some way.

Once on your skin a rash soon forms which can be incredibly itchy, painful and lasts for three weeks or more. SEEK MEDICAL ADVICE IMMEDIATELY. If you have no alternative than to pick one up make sure that you wear a stout pair of protective gloves, but remember the hairs and dust and poison will be on the gloves so be careful what you do with them after.

Veterinary services have many emergency calls through pet contact with the caterpillars, they can pick up the hairs on their paws, they irritate and so the animal licks them. Once on the lips/tongue it will induce itching, swelling and possibly vomiting. Symptoms are small white spots in the mouth and on the tongue causing excessive drooling and chomping. In some cases, partial amputation of the tongue is the only course of action. DON'T DELAY TAKING THE ANIMAL TO THE VET. CASE HISTORY - A story about a dog which was infected was found in the morning to be frothing at the mouth, the tongue was black and swollen so much it was almost choking her by the time she arrived at the vets. He gave her several injections and said the only thing that would relieve the pain and make her last few hours more comfortable was to drip melted ice onto her tongue. This was done every few seconds for 24 hours. The tongue was black and horrible but with every drip of iced water it went pink where the water touched but within seconds turned black again. Much to the vetâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s amazement she survived the night and was given more injections the next day. Three days and much iced water later the centre of her tongue started to return to a more normal colour but the edges of the tongue were cream coloured and very sticky.

On the fourth day the edge of her tongue started to come away all around the tip and halfway up each side. It looked like melted mozzarella, all stringy and gooey. She is one of the lucky ones, she survived against all odds and much to the amazement of the vet. Welcome to the World of Chakras

As I mentioned earlier it was during my Reiki 1 course that I first learnt about chakras. They affect our whole being, and as a reiki healer I work with chakras every day. I used to work with the seven main chakras; although I now work with twelve as did the Atlanteans, but I will explain more about that later.

The word Chakra in Sanskrit translates to wheel or disc and according to traditional writings there are 88,000 chakras in the human body covering basically every area in the body. The majority of them are small and insignificant. 40 of them have significant function and they are in the hands, feet, fingertips and shoulders. However, the most significant ones are the Seven Main Chakras located along the central line of the body, from the base of the spine to the top of the head.

INTRODUCTION TO THE CHAKRA SYSTEM Chakra energy has been around for about 4,000 years and has progressed from a time when they learnt that the lower chakras were associated with the elements.

Chakras are energy centres; they are ever spinning and work together like cogs of a machine.

An open chakra will spin freely helping to maintain free flowing energy in the body.

Chakra balance helps you to fight disease and will reduce the symptoms you may suffer when under stress.

Chakras are associated with shapes, colours and elements.

Basalt, Marine and semi precious stones will give positive vibrations and help the correct spin of the chakras.

There are many chakras situated throughout the body, but most therapists tend to work with the seven main chakras in the midline of the body.

To learn more about chakras I can recommend a very good book called “Wheels of Life” by Judith Anodea HOW CHAKRAS AFFECT US? The chakras are constantly rotating and vibrating.

The activities in them influence our: Body shape, Glandular processes, Chronic physical ailments, Thoughts and Behaviour. When one (or more) of the chakra is blocked and the energy does not flow harmoniously through them, or it is wide open, it will result in imbalance that is manifested in all areas of life.

WHAT BLOCKS A CHAKRA? Childhood traumas, cultural conditioning, limited belief system, bad habits, physical and emotional injuries. Or even just lack of attention all contribute to chakra blockage.

Difficulties abound in life, for each one, we develop a coping strategy.

If these difficulties persist, these coping strategies become chronic patterns, anchored in the body and psyche as defense structures. It is important to recognize the blocks we carry, find and understand their source and meaning, and develop tools to heal them.

HOW CAN WE HEAL THEM? We can influence our chakras, our health, and our lives by using different techniques: • Healing, such as Reiki • Colour therapy • Yoga • Conscious breathing • Physical exercises • Meditation • Guided visualisation • Positive thinking • Affirmations • Balancing: Using your Hands, a Pendulum, Crystals and Gemstones • Aromatherapy • Foods In the next chapter I will talk about methods you can use at home to balance and get in touch with your own chakra system before going on to reveal my own experiences of the twelve chakra system and how that has altered my spiritual path.

INSTRUCTIONS: 1: Use a creeping technique to activate each of the following zones.

Creeping is done with the edge of your thumb. You press the thumb to the zone at the first crease of the knuckle and slowly roll it forward along the edge. Once you reach the end of the thumb, you lift the thumb, move it forward slightly, and repeat the thumb pressure.

The motion is much like that of a caterpillar.

2: Find the thyroid zone on the right hand at the base of the thumb.

Begin creeping along the bottom knuckle, slowly working your way all the way around the base of the thumb. Work the base in the counter-clockwise direction if you are looking down from the top of the thumb.

3: Locate the thyroid zone on the bottom of the right foot. The zone begins at the base of the big toe on the pad and runs along the first three toes. The creeping technique is used to work the pad by these three toes. The motion is from the big toe towards the third toe.

4: Look at the top of the right foot and move to the base of the big toe. The thyroid region is at the base of the big toe along the top of the foot to the third toe. Work this region with a creeping technique from the big toe towards the third toe.

The New Kimrick Restaurant is situated off Mojácar Playa on Calle Zurbaran. Turn right at the Red Cross roundabout, drive about 300 metres and you will find The New Kimrick on your left.

Under the management of Terry and his team The Kimrick has undergone a very pleasing makeover and with Julia, whose culinary reputation is well respected locally in charge of the kitchen, the food has too.

We set off to try the new Winter Menu. We were joined by four friends who immediately commented favourably on the modern décor and careful table layout of this large restaurant.

They were impressed by the range of choice on the winter lunch and evening menu and even more so by the appearance and taste of the dishes they chose.

We settled down with a bottle of house red wine at 8€ to peruse the extensive menu of 7 starters, 11 main courses and at least 4 desserts. I was tempted by Spinach and Manchego Cheese Parcels served with tomato sauce which were light, full of flavour and well complemented by the sauce. Dave and two friends chose Garlic Mushrooms -

these were deliciously garlicky so I suggest that your partner samples them too! Roasted Mediterranean Vegetables was ideal for Lesley who has an intolerance to Gluten and the home-made Chef’s Pate, a combination of chicken and pork served with salad garnish and toast was a meal in itself. Also on the menu are Home-made Soup, Mussels and Vegetable Pancakes au Gratin.

Now for the mains ... I chose Chicken Tagine with Cous Cous again plentiful and flavoursome.

Helen had Pork Loin in a mustard, cider and cream sauce, the pork being tender and the sauce delicious. Lamb’s Liver with Onions in a red wine gravy, a lovely warming dish for a chilly evening, and three portions of Swordfish completed our choices,

the fish was cooked to perfection and all served with sauté potatoes and a platter of fresh vegetables pleasantly presented on hot plates. Also available is Chicken Breast with onions in a sweet sherry sauce, Spaghetti with Mussels, Clams and Garlic or Bolognese Sauce, Lasagne and Fillets of Hake. For a supplement of 5€ you can have Sirloin Steak or Slow Roasted Half Shoulder of Lamb. After all the delicious food we really didn’t need dessert but you can’t comment on these dishes unless you have tasted them. After a short interval Baked Lemon Cheesecake tickled my

taste buds and if you really like what I would call American style cheesecake this is definitely the one for you - light, lemony and cakey, mmmm!! Apple Pie with custard was Dave’s choice and it was very much to his taste. A Date, Apple and Walnut Tart served hot with cream or ice cream, Sticky Toffee Pudding and Vanilla Ice Cream with a hot Chocolate gluten free sauce left us all feeling very satisfied indeed.

This Winter Menu is available 1pm - 4pm and 7pm - 10pm, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 6.95€ for 1 course, 9.95€ for 2 courses and 12.95€ for 3 courses.

The New Kimrick also offers a Friday Fish and Chip menu with a choice of either Haddock or

Cod with garden or mushy peas and hand cut chips. Standard fish 4.95€, large fish 6.95€ with a selection of starters available at 2.50€ and desserts at 3€.

On Sundays, a Roast Lunch Menu is served from 1pm - 5pm with a choice of 4 starters, 4 main courses and 4 desserts at 9€ for 1 course, 12€ for 2 courses and 14€ for 3 courses. The roast beef and Yorkshire pudding comes highly recommended by friends!

The Wine List offers red, white and rosé house wine at 8€ a bottle and a choice of 6 red, 6 white and 3 rosé starting at 10€ with a number of wines at 11 or 12€, the most expensive being a Viña Arnáiz Gran Reserva,

Ribera del Duero at 32€.

The New Kimrick is closed on Mondays, Tuesdays and Saturdays except for private functions. The makeover extends to downstairs too, where there is a large function room available with its own bar.

English cinema nights are a recent innovation. You can dine and see a film on the huge screen with dynamic sound for as little as 10€. Dinner Dances are held monthly with music by Arriba, Arriba. Ceroc classes with Tracey and Paul are held on Tuesdays at 8pm and the pool is open to the public during the summer months.

Cupid Comes to Town As a celebration of St Valentine's Day, members of Eleanor and Gilly's Line Dance Class, based at Bar Rumores in Albox, all dressed up in the colour of the heart, red, to meet Cupid. In addition all the dances of the afternoon were danced to love songs. Prizes were given for the best Valentine’s cards that were presented to Cupid and every Member of the class was presented with a potted petunia.

San Valentín was celebrated at the APSA shop in Albox with a special window display, special offers and a range of new Frillies lingerie at bargain prices, free cakes and a free raffle. One of the winners, Rema, pictured right with Kathy, shop manageress, won a heart-shaped cake.

Frillies new lingerie will be back at the shop on Monday 14th March, 10am 2pm when there will be some special bargains for the day on offer. Lesley offers a private measuring and fitting service in the shop’s changing rooms, she can and does, find something to fit everyone! The shop is in Calle Ancha, just up the road from Santander bank, opposite San Francisco Square. Find yourself a bargain and help the animal charity too!

The APSA charity raffle winners for January. Alex won the meal at Syedpur Indian Restaurant and Dave Stratton won the meal at Amigos Bowling Centre. The pantomime Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, performed in Albox and Arboleas, raised €3,004 for the local animal charity APSA. The Saturday performance at Arboleas was standing room only and the audience included the mayor. Christine Freestone, who had the initial idea and directed the show, was delighted with the kind comments from people who attended the shows and with the amount raised for charity. She would like to thank all who helped in any way and those who came to the show, in particular the musicians who played so splendidly, Jay for the superb choreography and Jacqueline who stood in at the last minute as the mirror! Thank you all. Although still recovering from all the hard work, Christine, encouraged by so many appreciative comments, is looking forward to the next production. Sheena’s sister, Evelyn, travelled from her home in Durham specially for the event, and as a real surprise Sheena’s two sons, Ian and Neil, arrived at midnight the night before. Entertainment was supplied by Johnny Hayes “Square Dancing” which was great fun and enjoyed by all, Johnny is a well known ‘Caller’ and has performed all over America, followed by a disco until late with DJ Ian. A hot buffet was provided and as usual the staff worked hard to make the evening such a success.

Alan Geoffrey “One Wine” Simpson 1930 - 2011 A native of the leafy lanes of Hertfordshire, Alan Simpson traversed jungles and deserts on his way to his final home and resting place.

He first came to Mojácar in 1968, when Bill Napier and old mayor Jacinto were beginning to put it on the map.

A child in World War Two, he was machine-gunned in his village school playground by a cruising aircraft (The only casualty was a boy who ran into the road and was brushed by a passing car) and rendered homeless by a V2 rocket before he had finished his Sunday lunch, thereafter being probed for broken glass on top of a piano in a snowstorm. That is why the title of his on-going autobiography was "Naked in the Snow". (It was serialised in Talismán magazine and later printed as a book of "the-story-so-far". Each chapter was written to be a stand-alone, anecdotal tale, but together they form a fascinating and humorous account of a true adventurer.)

An infantry commander in the Korean War, he was commended for his part in extricating casualties and the dead from a minefield in No-Man's-Land. After the war he aided Malaya's path to independence, seeking out terrorists deep in the Malayan jungle. Travelling with head-hunters for companions he explored distant headwaters in Sarawak by dugout canoe, sleeping at night beneath bundles of human heads.

He later sought out remote parts of tribal Africa and the Sahel before moving to West Africa, where he commanded part of a 650-strong security force protecting the diamond fields, which later funded Sierra Leone's twenty year civil war; the setting for the film "Blood Diamonds".

Still in West Africa, he became a chief of police in the diamond mining areas, and was later a miner of diamonds, gold and tin.

His memoirs mention the Zanzibar bloodbath instigated by "General" John Okello, and the attempted overthrow of the Moroccan monarchy

by General "Name of a Nightmare" Mohamed Oufkhir, both of which situations caused him some inconvenience.

Alan Simpson was an occasional magazine contributor, and a talented photographer.

An "honorary" Mojaquero since his first visit, Alan became the real thing when he settled into Mojácar Village in 1990. His partner, the artist and potter Janet Le Bretton, predeceased him in 2001. Alan’s funeral was extremely well attended, by both the foreign and Spanish communities, and by residents of Mojácar village and the playa. He was indeed well loved.

Giant Paella

Mojácar's usual quiet Saturday routine was interrupted on 5th February by the preparation and consumption of a giant paella at the Parque Comercial to support the Ciudadanos Europeos party.

Angel Medina comes, as you may know, from Valencia - home of Spain's greatest contribution to good eating: the paella. 'Arroz' as it is usually known, comes in over a hundred varieties. This day’s paella, filled with chicken, artichokes, white beans, tomato sauce, garlic, saffron and rice, was cooked al fresco providing enough food for at least several hundred diners. The cooks were Angel, Mariano and Vincent. The paella was arranged by the Club Taurino de Mojácar, the Café Bar Maskó, Paellas Gigantes 'Valencia' and Angel Medina, president of C i u d a d a n o s Europeos.

HATTIE - was one of the dogs selected to go to Holland, but the results of her blood test showed that she has the very early stages of leishmaniasis. She is a lovely dog currently in a short term foster home where she has started her treatment.

A friendly, loyal young female just 3 years old, loves to go for walks and is quite good on the lead, she gets on well with other dogs. Hattie just wants to be loved and be with you. Hattie needs a permanent or long term foster home, she will be spayed as soon as it is possible and her treatment will only cost around 1 euro a week, which may not be long term.

Pets of the Moment SANDY - Sweet Sandy was callously thrown from a moving car. As a result she suffered painful foot pad injuries which required a lot of time and care to heal. Now Sandy is well and is able to enjoy some quality time at PAWS with people who care about her. She is one of the sweetest dogs we know with a soft and gentle nature.

She is kind to her kennelmates and easy for her caretaker to handle. She is a quiet dog who doesn’t ask for much, just kindness. As an older dog she won’t need too much exercise and she also has an old injury that causes a small limp.

JESS - is a friendly dog with people and other dogs. She is active and enjoys walking, running and playing. She is toy motivated.

FERRO - Can you give this handsome and lovely Doberman a good home?

Ferro is a friendly and active dog that loves to play and be involved in all kinds of activities. He gets on well with other dogs though he does not seem to be aware of his own size and sometimes plays a little rough with the others. But he means no harm. Because he spends most of his time with other dogs he is a little less sure about us humans, so may step back at first approach from strangers but then relaxes and makes contact. A really nice and energetic teenager dog.

You Can Not Be Serious

By The Other Half Of Chivalry and Inspiration Many years ago I promised to Love, Honour and Obey. Little did I realise at the time that this was just the buyline, designed to lull you into a false sense of security until safely hooked. It’s the same sort of ploy as used in the car ads. which promise a car for all seasons from £6,995, hoping that nobody will read the small print at the bottom stating ‘model actually shown £16,995’ presumably meaning that for £6,995 you will get the car, but minus wheels, gearbox and engine.

Back to Love, Honour and Obey. Scarcely has the last crumb of wedding cake been removed from a previously unsuspected tooth cavity before you are faced with the small print. It turns out that there are all sorts of subtle sub-divisions, lines of demarcation, priorities and territories within the male-female relationship. Nobody mentions these beforehand, least of all She who will act as upholder and guardian of these inviolable traditions - you simply have to find out the hard way.

Very roughly, married life is divided into Man’s Work and Woman’s Work. I have found it in my best interests to accept this arbitrary division without question, and, to be fair, on the whole, it is a harmonious relationship. She is a benign Dictator, and I am not about to stage a coup.

I go on the principle If it ain’t broke, don’t mend it. Fine, until the other day, when the Higher Authority hurt her back. This upset the apple cart and sent all the apples rolling off in every direction, so exceptional measures were put in place, I decided on Chivalry, and uttered those fateful words, ‘I’ll do that.’

Now Cleaning is clearly Woman’s Work, except for the car. Just between ourselves, I feel that the Higher Authority gets a bit carried away with cleaning. After all, what is the point of dusting? Might as well leave it to

settle, it’s doing less harm sitting on the furniture than it is floating around in the air and clogging up our lungs.

And then there’s the washing. Not necessary, in my view, until we have run out of clothes, probably around Easter. I pointed these indisputable truths out to her purely in the spirit of helpfulness, but she didn’t see it that way, and I could tell that no amount of Ibuprofen or logical argument was going to get me out of it, so I dusted, and loaded the washing machine.

But ironing is a step too far. We faced each other over a pile of crumpled clothes. She winced, and gave a small whimper. I rose magnificently to the occasion.

‘I’ll lower the ironing board, then you can manage to iron sitting down.’

She must be feeling bad. She gave in without a murmur. Mind you, I am cooking supper, and tomorrow I’ve got to wash the rejas and clean the windows.

"52 members and guests enjoyed the birthday party of Robbie Burns organised by The Mojácar Branch of The Royal British Legion at The Kimrick. The Burns Night started with the haggis being ‘piped in’ by Keith Hunter in traditional style and the evening’s “Rustic” Alastair Manson addressed the very tasty Haggis with An’ cut you up wi’ ready sklicht whilst plunging the blade from end to end with wild enthusiasm.

During the many toasts of the evening, the guests were entertained

by Jeff Proctor offering a toast to the Lasses, mistakenly referring to the famous canine of the screen until his wife Jill corrected him and was able to respond in her Toast to the Laddies. The tam-o’-shanter black woollen beret was worn by Jeff who translated for those not acquainted with the Piper’s reading from Burns’ poem."

A Scottish Ceilidh was held at Turre Church on 21st January “to help and advance the local community.” The event was attended by the mayor of Turre and a real Scottish piper. Also in attendance were Jim and Ellen of Arriba, Arriba who added a half hour set of Scottish dances and jigs to the entertainment programme.

“In November 2010, La Mata Bowling Club was informed that we would no longer have the use of the Bowling Green at La Mata Gardens Hotel after December.

Letters were immediately sent to the Lady Mayor, the Vice Mayor and some other councillors, no demands were made, just a simple request for help in finding a solution that would allow our club to continue the sport of Bowls. At that time, contact was also made with many other business people throughout Mojácar including the various Golf Clubs.

In a demonstration of intent to keep the Club going, La Mata LBC held its AGM on 31st January 2011 where virtually all of our members, not in the UK at the time, attended - unquestionably a strong show of support. At this AGM, Angel Medina the Vice Mayor gave a positive update regarding the offer of help he had initially made in December 2010 that was well received by all La Mata members.

A few weeks ago, Diego Garcia (Union Mojaquera) heard about our problem and arranged a meeting where I was invited to speak about our problem. Diego listened carefully and then explained in detail his plan and offer of help.

Over the past week, Rosa Cano, the Lady Mayor has had a discussion with the Costa Almeria Lawn Bowling committee (CALB) who are fully supportive of our club. Rosa Cano has outlined a possible solution of help.

To date, we have received three positive offers of help, each from different political persuasions at the ayuntamiento, each giving details of plots of land in Mojácar that could produce a viable solution for the construction of a bowling green. Obviously little or no progress will take place between now and the forthcoming local elections in May and progress beyond the elections will depend on the political will of the successful ruling party.

We at La Mata LBC are well aware of the considerable support given from the other Bowling Clubs both in Almeria, Spain and the UK and are determined to do our utmost to keep our Club going.

Considerable help and support has been given by many business people in Mojácar, many have expressed the same sentiments that we have sadly often talked about in recent times, that the closure of our Club is synonymous with the decline of Mojácar as shown by the many suffering or closing restaurants, shops, etc.

The people of Mojácar cannot afford to lose another of the very few sports facilities still remaining, least of all a Bowling Club which gives so much back to the community.”

Everything ran like clockwork. Terry Jackson has made The New Kimrick a delightful venue for public and private functions alike and I look forward to working with him in the future.  Montserrat, in the Leeward Island group, is known as “the Emerald Isle of the Caribbean”, partly because of its lush greenery, but also because so many Irish people settled there.

One large group arrived in 1632 and began the custom of celebrating St. Patrick’s Day. For two centuries, the Montserrat economy was founded upon slavery. In 1768, slaves chose March 17 to launch an uprising against the plantation owners, whom they reckoned would be distracted by the St. Patrick’s Day celebrations. Unfortunately the rebellion failed, and the slaves were not freed until 1834. St. Patrick’s Day was made an official holiday in 1985, commemorating Montserrat’s own national heroes as well as its Irish background.  Patrick records in his Confessio that he was taken from his home in Britain at about sixteen years of age, along with many thousands of people, and brought to Ireland as a captive. His assigned work as a shepherd gave him abundant time for prayer and contemplation, and his faith grew. He escaped after six years of servitude, and eventually made his way back to his parents. He did not remain in Britain, however.

One night in a dream he heard “the voice of the Irish” calling him to return and “walk among them”, and so began his famous ministry.  The first celebration of St. Patrick’s Day in America took place in Boston in 1737, hosted by the Charitable Irish Society of Boston. There was likely some sort of informal procession, but no official parade. Thus New York can claim the honor of hosting the first official St. Patrick’s Day parade, in 1762. The marchers were Irish soldiers serving in the English army. Although St. Patrick’s Day is not an official holiday in the United States, it is nevertheless widely celebrated, and with good reason: over 30 million Americans claim Irish ancestry, more than seven times the population of Ireland itself!  St. Patrick’s Day was a family affair, celebrated with attendance at mass followed by feasting, drinking, music and storytelling. Although green is the traditional Irish colour, it was not worn by children. This was for safety reasons, since green was also the favourite colour of the fairies. A child wearing green was believed to be in danger of being spirited away by the wee folk.  Leprechauns are the shoemakers for the fairies, and can be found by listening for the tap-tap-tap of their hammers. If you catch a leprechaun, you can make him give you his gold, but this is more easily said than done, for he is notoriously devious. Take your eyes off him for but a second and he will vanish — and he has many tricks to divert your gaze. Leprechauns feature in St. Patrick’s Day parades everywhere. In Chicago, they contribute to the celebrations by turning the river green for several hours each year in honour of the day.

‘Hissing Sid’ went out on Sunday with ‘Deep Sea Dave’, Leo and Scott from Reading. The sea was like a mill pond but water temp was still low at 52f. Fishing was slow even though the fish finder showed plenty of fish but they were not on the feed. The sea was dead flat until 1.45pm but within10 minutes we had 4 foot waves, shows how fast the sea conditions can change.

We also had a big shoal of fish, about 50 of them leaping out of the water like dolphins. They were about 1.5 to 2 feet long and looked like tuna, within 2 minutes they were gone in the distance.

I went out with ‘Cuba Brian’ early in the week, before the winds came and we anchored in a perfect flat sea over my favourite hole, the 250 footer, 300 metres out off the mark.

We weren’t catching much and so when a breeze came up that pushed us too far north we moved a few yards into deeper water, 300 feet. Again not much caught and I blame myself after last week claiming me and my ground baits would make the boat’s catch rate get better.

Brian went out again but the high winds we have been suffering cut the trip short. Some of the ‘Grumpy Old Men of Los Gallardos’ joined him. I think they all caught one or

two fish each including one octopus.

‘Chippy Pete’ hasn’t been out on his boat because of the poor weather.

‘London Bill’ had a few mullet out from local shore marks in Mojácar early in the week but he’s a good weather angler, bit like me.

It was nice to hear from ‘Baza Barry’ who hasn’t been well for a while suffering a bad back. He got out on the River Segura in Murcia Town where he and a mate caught about 15lbs of small carp each.

This week’s Rods and Reels match was on the 8 foot drain well up north.

Again this week, even though there is some depth of water, 8 anglers blanked. The cold weather is certainly putting the fish off feeding.

Now we have sections on the drain called cyanide alley, because at present there are no fish there as if they have been poisoned.

1st Ian (Irish Wizard) Dalzell fishing the pole using maggot with 10.1lbs.

2nd Dave (The Sweetie Man) Hutchinson fishing the pole using maggot with 7.4lbs.

3rd Jim (The Medic) Hovey fishing the pole using maggot with 7.3lbs.

Abbey Angling also fished well up north of us and only two anglers caught fish. The joint winners were ‘Mike (The Arsenal) Hill’ and ‘Mark (Ken’s Friend) Harrington’, they caught one fish each weighing just over half a pound on the pole and maggot and both anglers were in the same section.

The next Saturday competition at Hondon Trout Fishery will be on March 5th. If you want to participate in one of these competitions please

Anglers Together meetings are held in two locations on the second Friday and Saturday of each month. Anyone with an interest in fishing (sea or freshwater) is welcome to come along to a meeting to see what we’re about.

There is a NEW VENUE for the Puerto de Mazarron meeting - on Saturday 12th March at 12 o’clock the meeting will be held at The New Royal Bar and Restaurant at El Alamillo, opposite the sea-front between Isla Plana and the Port.

Bridie is due to get the next batch of boat and beach fishing licenses sometime early March so if anyone is interested please see me, you will need a copy of your passport and NIE document.

The next meeting of the Syedpur Fishing Club based in Albox (sea and coarse) will take place at 4pm at the Syedpur Restaurant, Albox, on Wednesday March 2nd then every two weeks.
