President’s Message Dear Members and Friends of Adventures in Learning,

As we wrap up AIL’s outstanding 25th anniversary year, we’ll soon be turning over the calendar to welcome 2024! It’s been an exciting and fulfilling year, promising many rewarding years ahead with old friends and new!

During the year, 36 classes were offered over the four terms, we have added six talented new study leaders and our membership has bounced back to over 370 after the COVID-19 dip. In addition to our wonderful classes, we’ve enjoyed lectures, field trips, Science Pubs, Community Spotlights and the return of presentations at Woodcrest Village.

Colby-Sawyer College (CSC) has been our backbone, offering much-needed support and friendship. This year, AIL was extremely honored to be presented with CSC’s Community Award! Throughout 2023, we celebrated AIL’s growth since its inception in 1998. In June, we enjoyed a wonderful party on the CSC campus where we honored AIL’s founders with an inscribed bronze plaque and gave thanks to retiring board members.

As a result of strategic planning and a successful capital campaign, we have improved program technology, upgraded our AIL classroom in Lethbridge Lodge and, very importantly, strengthened our presence in the community by gaining new friends and supporters.

We are extremely proud of the dedication that is shown by the work of AIL’s six committees: Curriculum, Communications, Finance, Governance, Membership and Nominating, as well as our program manager and program assistant, and AIL’s Board of Directors.

We hope that you’ll enjoy this beautiful keepsake commemorative celebrating 25 years of AIL – and that we’ll see you in class or at an event soon!

The Beginning of a Partnership Following a great deal of work by the founders group, Hilary Cleveland sent the following letter to Anne Ponder, then-president of Colby-Sawyer College, to begin discussions about formalizing a partnership in winter 1998.

President Anne Ponder Colby-Sawyer College New London, NH 03257 Dear Anne: A group of area residents met on January 27, 1998 to discuss the possibility of forming an organization to promote adult learning in the greater New London region. The model for such a project is the Institute for Lifelong Education at Dartmouth (ILEAD) and the group therefore seeks an affiliation with Colby-Sawyer College on a formal or informal basis.

It was proposed that five or six study groups be planned for the fall of 1998 and another five or six groups during the winter of 1999. These study groups would meet for two hours once a week over an eight-week period. A curriculum committee would be formed to find discussion leaders offering a variety of courses on different topics. Discussion leaders would volunteer their services.

Participants would pay a fee (to be determined) and would also pay for their own books or other suggested materials. ILEAD requires a membership fee of $35 per year in addition to a registration fee per course.

It was suggested that Colby-Sawyer College might participate in some, or all, of the following ways: 1. Use of the college name “Odyssey at Colby-Sawyer College,” for example 2. Office help In return for a fee, the college would provide help with mailing brochures, answering telephone inquiries, duplicating course materials, etc.

3. Classroom space The college would make available, by reservation, rooms such as Alumnae Lounge, Cleveland-Colby-Colgate Archives, Chargers Room, etc. to be used for weekly discussion groups during the fall and winter semesters.

Hopefully, this affiliation would be beneficial to the college. It would provide outreach to the wider New London community and foster intellectual ties with retirees and other adults in the area. Presumably, participants would use the Library, the Bookstore and become familiar with college programs both curricular and extra-curricular. If successful, the reputation of ColbySawyer College would be enhanced thereby helping the efforts of the Development Office.

It is hoped that you will present this rough proposal to the Board of Trustees as well as the President’s Advisory Council. We would welcome any suggestions or comments.

Members-Only Events AIL hosted two members-only events in the summer of 2023: A Conversation with Carter Roberts and a presentation by John Ferries, Artificial Intelligence: Turning Our World Upside Down. Additionally, those new to AIL in 2023 were invited to attend a New Member Coffee to meet other new members and learn about the organization.

A Conversation with Carter Roberts – AIL was excited to host World Wildlife Fund (WWF) President & CEO Carter Roberts and local wildlife photographer Jen Esten at a members-only event on July 25 at Colby-Sawyer College’s Davidow Center for Art + Design. WWF, the world’s largest network of international conservation organizations, works across 100 countries and enjoys the support of five million members worldwide. Its panda logo is recognized and well loved throughout the world. Roberts discussed his work leading WWF’s efforts to save the world’s great ecosystems and address climate change by linking science, field and policy programs with an ambitious initiative to work with markets and businesses to lighten their impact on the planet. He also spoke of his New London connection, which goes back four generations and fostered his love of sailing, bird watching and community. Longtime AIL members may remember Roberts’s father, John Roberts, who served as AIL curriculum chair and taught many courses in history, and his aunt Fran, who taught art courses at AIL. –Jan Harrison

Artificial Intelligence with John Ferries – Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a term that seemingly burst into the world’s lexicon just a few years ago. What is AI and how is it used? Is this something we should embrace or is it concerning? These questions were addressed in an informative presentation on August 30 at Colby-Sawyer College’s Ivey Science Center. Ferries discussed how the AI reach has extended into the worlds of art (OpenAI DALL-E), music (Musenet, MelodyStudio) and all parts of our society, such as business, healthcare and education. While AI applications may benefit society, the threats of its misuse are real. AI models like ChatGPT are trained on public datasets. As datasets are filled with low quality, unverified content, the AI model becomes less useful. Another major danger – Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) – is the threat that prompts will not be needed and that the system will teach itself, interact with the world and surpass human intellectual activity. Currently a resident of Valley Forge, Pennsylvania, Ferries was president of AIL from 2016 to 2019 and taught a wide array of AIL courses when he and his wife Donna lived in New London.

–Jan Harrison New Member Coffees – New Member Coffees came about to help welcome newcomers to the organization in an informal way. They have provided an opportunity to socialize with other new members, get to know some veteran members and learn more about AIL and ways to be involved in the organization. The first gathering was held in Galligan’s Pub on February 27, followed by a second opportunity to connect on September 12. These events have been very well received, resulting in new connections, new committee members and a greater appreciation for all that AIL has to offer.

Field Trips AIL has a long history of trips for its members, with destinations including the then-Currier Gallery of Art, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum, the Harvard University art museums, Adams National Historical Park. the JFK Presidential Library and Museum, the Eric Carle Museum and the Institute of Contemporary Art. In this 25th anniversary year, AIL provided members with three opportunities to travel together:

Additionally, as an element of the strong partnership between Colby-Sawyer and AIL, each year the AIL board presents the college with a gift. Over the past 25 years, AIL has donated more than $340,000 to Colby-Sawyer. These gifts have supported the Colby-Sawyer Fund and a portion of these funds endowed the Adventures in Learning Merit Award Scholarship, which provides financial assistance to a deserving Colby-Sawyer student each year.

Community Enrichment at Woodcrest Adventures in Learning’s community enrichment program at Woodcrest Village began in July 2012 as a service to the residents of the assisted living community. Morris Edwards kicked off the series with a presentation called The Astors. Following that initial lecture, AIL delivered over 70 presentations up until the COVID-19 pandemic shut it down in spring of 2020. AIL resumed its community enrichment program at Woodcrest Village in spring 2023 with presentations by David Click and Liz Tentarelli, and it looks forward to continuing this collaboration in 2024.

AIL Gives Back to CSC

In early July 2023, outgoing AIL President Harry Tether, incoming AIL President Katrina Wagner and AIL Secretary Betsy Boege presented Colby-Sawyer College President Sue Stuebner with a check for $15,000 as a donation to the college’s Annual Fund, acknowledging the close working relationship between Colby-Sawyer College and Adventures in Learning. Over the past 25 years, AIL has donated more than $340,000 to Colby-Sawyer. These gifts have supported the Colby-Sawyer Fund and a portion of these funds endowed the Adventures in Learning Merit Award Scholarship. AIL looks forward to the continuation of this important collaboration.

Adventures in Learning Merit Award Scholarship Adventures in Learning began recognizing Colby-Sawyer students for its Merit Award Scholarship in 2009. The fund was established to support a junior student whose academic achievement (3.50 or higher grade point average) demonstrates the potential for lifelong learning and whose commitment to Colby-Sawyer College demonstrates the potential for lifelong contribution to the college, as evidenced by service to and leadership within the college community. Since 2009, the scholarship has recognized a recipient each year, contributing over $25,000 to a host of dedicated, hardworking students from a variety of backgrounds who have pursued equally diverse interests: 2023: Ava Beauchesne 2022: Ashley Gatchell 2021: Brenna Tobin 2020: Alyssa Bergeron 2019: Tatianna Bates

Adventures in Learning’s first-ever capital campaign, conducted in conjunction with its 25th anniversary celebration, is an unqualified success.

Perhaps most encouraging is the strengthening of community partnerships throughout the process, which is a testament to AIL’s support within the area. In particular, AIL is proud to have debuted its Community Spotlight series and revived its presentations at Woodcrest. The 25th anniversary celebration held in Wheeler Hall on June 8 was attended by over 130 members, business donors and community partners.

Fundraising for AIL’s milestone anniversary has well exceeded the initial goal of $50,000. At the end of September, AIL had nearly doubled this original target. An impressive number of donors contributed to the 25th anniversary fund–more than 230 members and friends showed their support and 12 local businesses made significant contributions as well. Fundraising efforts continue through the end of December.

As a result of the success of AIL’s campaign, the organization has been able to make investments to improve the member experience. In September, the Lethbridge Lodge classroom saw the installation of new furniture (pictured left) for use in the fall term. In addition, new window treatments have been purchased to enhance the viewing of movies and videos.

Additional technology investments are being made to enrich the overall classroom experience.

To increase efficiency for AIL staff, new laptop computers were purchased, and soon, new software will be implemented to streamline the course registration process. AIL also added to its scholarship fund that provides aid to a current Colby-Sawyer student and, with the help of the college, our contribution to the scholarship fund received a matching grant.

The generosity of AIL members, friends and local community organizations is greatly appreciated. Due to this overwhelming support, AIL can make long term strategic investments in its programs, courses and community events, all of which point to a vibrant future.

New Website Unveiled

In January 2023, AIL published its second website (the first was published in 2001 and embedded within Colby-Sawyer College’s site), making it easier to tailor content to the needs of its members. The new platform has allowed the organization to more easily keep information up to date, showcase photos, advertise events and otherwise be a vehicle for promoting the work and mission of the organization.
