Tour Itinerary Day 1(Sat)– Depart Toronto - Winnipeg Group assembles at Toronto’s Union station and check in at Via Rail desk for Canadian Westbound journey. Our on board accommodation for this leg will be Sleeper Plus berth category, which has a night time upper/lower berth bedding option and day time panoramic seating configuration.

Your cozy accommodations are prepared for your night’s rest with your friendly car attendant.

Depart Toronto at 2200 hours. Enjoy the finest Via Rail hospitality aboard the Canadian.

(D) Day 2(Sun) Whole day on board Wake up to picturesque views of the Southern Ontario region. Travel whole day through towns and settlements, thick forests and over rugged Precambrian rock as you wind your way through the Canadian Shield. Follow along with our milepost information to receive a knowledgeable historical enhanced view of the places you are passing through. Bridges and viaducts abound, lakes and rivers are plentiful. Relax in your now converted panoramic seats or visit the Dome Car (seating included with your travel) for a 360 degree view of the passing scenery. All Meals are included in the dining car on board. (B,L,D) Day 3 (Mon)Winnipeg, Manitoba Well rested and an early wake up call, have breakfast on board and get ready to disembark at our first stop of the tour in Winnipeg, the capital of Manitoba. Arrive in Winnipeg at 0800 hours.

Upon arrival at the Via Rail station, we are met by the Wanderlust local guide and the coach. We immediately proceed on a guided city tour of downtown Winnipeg. You will tour through the Exchange District, with its exceptional collection of terra cotta and cut stone architecture. It was the late 1800’s, Winnipeg was booming, buildings were sprouting up like prairie weeds and the city boasted more millionaires per capita than New York City. Often used as the back-drop for Hollywood movie sets during the turn-of-the-last -century, the Exchange District is filled with some of the finest examples of the “Chicago school of architecture”.

Next, stop for lunch at Promenade Café. After lunch, head towards the French Quarter of the city where you will see the beautiful St. Boniface Cathedral, the oldest cathedral in Western Canada. The Cathedral’s cemetery features the grave of Louis Riel, the famous Métis leader and founder of Manitoba. The last stop is the St. Boniface Museum. Built in 1846 it is the largest remaining traditional oak log structure in North America and the first hospital in the Canadian West. After you tour the museum, head to your hotel for check in. Own dinner and overnight stay. Hotel: Fort Gary (B,L) Day 4 (Tue) Winnipeg Breakfast and pick up at hotel as we head to the Le Marche St. Norbert Market, Manitoba’s largest and best-known farmers’ market.

Featured weekly at the market are locally grown produce, delicious fresh baking, home style jams and preserves.

There are wonderful homespun crafts, uniquely designed jewelry, fresh cut flowers and much more. The colours are vibrant and the produce is field-fresh.

After you visit the farmers market, head to the award winning nature center Fort Whyte Alive.

Fort Whyte Alive is an environmental educational centre that has more than 600 acres of prairie, lakes, forest and wetlands. On this tour, take a step back in time when the bison roamed the prairie and to a time when people’s connection to the natural world was a matter of survival. Visit the Pioneer Sod House built from the earth, then stop by the bison viewing mound and discover the importance of this mammal to the Plains Cree. Explore the culture of the Métis, the influence they had on the fur trade, and their connection to the buffalo hunt. Stop for a bite to eat at the Buffalo Stone Café at Fort Whyte Alive. After lunch, head to Assiniboine Park for a guided tour of the Leo Mol Sculpture Garden and see the many bronze sculptures of this famous Winnipeg artist.

The final activity in this park will be a visit to the award winning Journey to Churchill exhibit.

Your guided journey starts in the Wapusk Lowlands where you will see wolves, black bears, and grey wolves. The next stop on your journey will be the Gateway to the Arctic. Head inside a 10 ft acrylic tunnel and be surrounded by polar bears and seals. The large swimming area provides physical exercise and a place to frolic and dart between the ice chunks. With only a clear wall bisecting the two species habitats, the polar bears and seals see and smell each other, creating a dynamic and enriching environment. This interaction between the seals and polar bears will be part of what puts this exhibit at the forefront of arctic zoo experiences. You will then discover the Churchill Coast as the facade will make you feel as though you are actually transported to the town of Churchill. The landscape will include rocks, bear dens, and here is where you can encounter polar bears “nose to nose”. Return to your hotel, own dinner in town.

Hotel: Fort Garry (B,L) Day 5(Wed) Winnipeg Breakfast and we start our day by visiting The Royal Canadian Mint. This high-tech highvolume manufacturing facility produces all of Canada’s circulation coinage, literally billions of coins each year. You will see all their state-ofthe-art equipment in action and have the opportunity to lift and hold a pure gold bar worth over $300,000.00! Browse their boutique for exclusive gifts and collectible items. After touring the Mint, head to the Manitoba Museum for a guided tour in one of Manitoba’s largest heritage centres renowned for its combined human and natural heritage themes. The Museum’s numerous collections reflect the heritage of Manitoba and other regions of the world. You will explore eight interpretive galleries depicting the history and environment of the province from its northern Arctic coast to its southern prairie grasslands. The Museum is noted for its Urban Gallery, which recreates Winnipeg in the 1920s, and the full-size replica ship Nonsuch, whose voyage in 1668 led to the founding of the Hudson’s Bay Company.

Head for lunch at Era Bistro located at the Canadian Museum for Human Rights. After lunch, take a guided tour of the museum. The Canadian Museum for Human Rights (CMHR) is the first museum solely dedicated to the evolution, celebration and future of human rights and the first national museum to be built in nearly half a century, and the first outside the national capital Region. This 90 minute guided tour will take you on a human rights journey and help you discover what the museum is all about. You will be able to explore most of the galleries and connect with compelling human rights stories. You will also see many architectural features of the building. (Access to the Israel Asper Tower of Hope is not included in the guided tour) However, you will be able to visit the Tower on your own after the tour.

We then take some time to explore the Forks Area, grab a bite to eat or head back to your hotel on foot before taking part in the Hermetic Code Tour of the Manitoba Legislative Building.

Depart on foot to the Manitoba Legislative Building for the Hermetic Code Tour. Through the Hermetic Code tour you will uncover the hidden meanings behind the architecture of the turn-of-the-last-century building including Sphinxes, hieroglyphics, numerological codes, and Masonic symbols. Prepare to be amazed at the mystical architecture and hidden meanings locked within the walls. This tour is part of the Signature Experience Collection with Destination Canada and is not to be missed! Late return to your hotel. Own dinner.

Hotel: Fort Garry (B,L) Day 6 (Thu) Winnipeg -Saskatoon, Saskatchewan After breakfast, transfer to Winnipeg rail station. Depart Winnipeg at 1145 hours. This is a daytime train, therefore we will be seated in Economy class seat compartment as you continue west and heading into Canada’s rolling prairies. Included set menu lunch and dinner on board the dining car. Arrive in Saskatoon Via Rail station at 2200 hours. We are met on arrival by a representative of Wanderlust and transfer to our hotel. Overnight stay.

Hotel: Senator (B,L,D) Day 7(Fri)Saskatoon Breakfast, meet our guide and coach at the hotel and begin the day by touring one of Saskatoon’s unique attractions, the Canadian Light Source Synchrotron. A synchrotron is a source of brilliant light that enables scientists to study the micro-structure and chemical properties of materials. Extremely bright synchrotron light is produced by using radio frequency waves and powerful magnets to accelerate electrons close to the speed of light. Canadian Light Source Synchrotron is the only one of its kind in Canada and the national centre for synchrotron research and a global centre of excellence in synchrotron science. Located at the premises of University of Saskatchewan, this extraordinary state-of-the-art research facility attracts scientists from around the world who purchase time on this unit for research projects.

Then we are off to visit the awe inspiring Wanuskewin Heritage Park, where 6,000 years of Northern Plains Indians history is celebrated. We will be led by a native elder in a Medicine Walk through the beautiful valley to see archaeological sites in the area and nature’s specialties. If we are lucky, we could see birds and some local wildlife.

After lunching on locally made bison burgers, we travel along Valley Road to the famous Berry Barn. Your guide will share the history of this beautiful river valley. You will learn how the Gardiner Dam that is upstream has made a significant difference to flooding, hydro power and recreation. On our way back to the city we stop at Black Fox Spirits, a farm based distillery. The guided tour demonstrates growing of the grains and flowers right to the bottle experience.

Own dinner tonight at one of the many restaurants within walking distance of your hotel. Then, we have a free evening to explore the River Landing and to visit the hands-on exhibits of Saskatoon’s history at the Meewasin Valley Centre. Hotel: Senator (B,L) Day 8(Sat) Saskatoon -Edmonton, Alberta After breakfast, leave for a scenic drive to Fort Carlton, a vital hub of the Hudson’s Bay Company’s transportation network & supplier of pemmican for the fur traders from (1810-1885). We will see the furs and other commodities and learn how and why the fur bales were marked. Walk the Red River cart trails and the river walk envisioning the York boats carrying trade goods up and down the river before enjoying a picnic lunch on the North Saskatchewan River bank, weather permitting.

On our return we drive past Beardy’s First Nation Reserve with a men’s healing lodge. We continue on to Duck Lake and arrive in Batoche, to learn of the Metis community’s frustration by the lack of government support in addressing the issues of encroaching settlement, land surveys and starvation because of disappearing buffalo herds. Learn of the famous Metis uprising in 1885 during the Riel Rebellion and the Battle of Batoche with Gabriel Dumont and Louis Riel & 300 supporters clashing against Colonel Middleton’s 900 field force. Explore the trenches, rifle pits, and see the graves, left from this event.

Relax as we drive back to Saskatoon for a late dinner before you’re transferred to the Saskatoon VIA Rail station to continue the journey west to Edmonton, the capital of Alberta. Depart Saskatoon at 2232 hours. Overnight on board the Canadian’s Sleeper Plus class berths and enjoy a good night’s sleep.

(B,L,D) Day 9(Sun) Edmonton, Alberta Arrive in Edmonton at 0622 am. Our local guide is meeting group at the train station. Short transfer to accommodation, freshen up. Breakfast at Varscona Hotel on Whyte. This day mostly spent outdoors visiting Elk Island National Park and the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Centre.

Elk Island National Park protects the wilderness of the aspen parkland and it is one of the most endangered habitats in Canada.

You will be able to explore this beautiful oasis, home to massive herds of free roaming plains bison, wood bison, moose, deer, and elk. Also boasting over 250 species of birds, the park is a bird watcher’s paradise—be sure to pack your camera!

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Centre is history brought to life at this open-air museum where costumed interpreters recreate the life of early Ukrainian pioneers who settled in east central Alberta from 1892-1930. Step back in time to hear real stories of triumph and hardship in Canada’s oldest and one-time largest bloc settlement of Ukrainian pioneers. You will be able to taste an authentic Ukrainian lunch.

Explore Edmonton and Old Strathcona throughout the evening. Own dinner. Hotel: Varscona on Whyte (B,L) Day 10(Mon) Edmonton-The Cowboy Trail We leave Edmonton after breakfast and your goal is to learn soon more about the Cowboy Trail and the history of western heritage. Highway 22, also known as The Cowboy Trail, is a scenic and historic connection for the towns, villages, and ranching communities of southern Alberta’s foothills. Western hospitality, adventure, antique shopping, National Historic Sites, and pristine wilderness can all be found on this 700 km long trail. It indeed is the ultimate ‘scenic route’ offering a unique and unforgettable journey with incredible mountain vistas and western landscapes.

The drive takes you through towns like Rocky Mountain House, Cochrane – you may like to taste the best ice cream – and if not there, you will in Bragg Creek.

The next two nights you spend in a barn on the Moose Mountain ranch in the picturesque hamlet of Bragg Creek, a short drive from Calgary.

Our accommodation is a beautifully designed barn with bedrooms, bathrooms and a large common area upstairs. Here, you will meet our local hosts and join the ranch hands for supper.

Sit down for a chat with hosts for a brief discussion on the typical life in a country ranch, horse riding and horsemanship that is part and parcel of life in a ranch. Moose Mountain Ranch (B,D) Day 11(Tue) The Cowboy Trail & Bar U Ranch You may wake up from the sound of the horses and enjoy a hearty continental breakfast.

Then you mount the saddled horses for a beautiful 2-hour horse ride in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. Off the saddle and into the waiting van, we drive further south on The Cowboy Trail to Bar U Ranch, the only Parks Canada administered National Historic Site that commemorates the history and importance of ranching in Canada. After a typical western lunch here you will follow the incredible tale of the Bar U through seven decades of change from 1882 – 1950.

Discover a variety of interpretive locations such as the blacksmith shop, harness repair shop, round up camp, and saddle horse barn and much more. We return to our ranch for dinner and the evening will be spent around a campfire. Moose Mountain Ranch (B,L,D) Day 12(Wed) The Cowboy Trail - Banff NP After breakfast we depart on another beautiful adventure as drive into the Rockies on the ‘Roads less Travelled” route. Few visitors get the opportunity to enjoy what Albertan’s call their ‘own sacred backyard’. There are opportunities to explore and do a short walk in the Kananaskis Provincial Park. Picnic Lunch on the road at one of the scenic day use areas. Overnight in Banff.

Dinner is on our own. Hotel: Grand Rockies Resort.

(B,L) Day 13(Thu) Banff NP - Lake Louise People from all over the world travel to Banff National Park every year to explore the grandeur of its pristine surroundings in the famed Canadian Rockies. On our Banff sightseeing today, we will connect with this beautiful World Heritage Site as we visit its landmarks and historic places. Your time will be spent enjoying the sights, taking photos, and participating in short walks to view points, on the many stops including the Bow Falls, Sulphur Mountain (Banff Gondola) to get a Birds Eye View of the Rockies, the Bow Valley, Johnston Canyon, and Lake Louise. Picnic lunch en route. If time permits we will visit Yoho National Park and observe the Spiral Tunnels and possibly even Takkakkaw Falls. Dinner is on our own (Our recommendation: The Station Restaurant, Former train station serving contemporary cuisine in an old converted dining car!) Overnight in Lake Louise. Hotel: Lake Louise Inn (B,L) Day 14(Fri) Lake Louise - Icefield Parkway Jasper National Park Early start after breakfast to visit Moraine Lake and the Valley of the Ten Peaks. Then drive the scenic Icefields Parkway from Lake Louise to Jasper. Around each corner you want to stop to take in the breathtaking views ; we stop at Crowfoot and Bow Glaciers and the Bow Lake with a visit to Num-Ti-Jah Lodge for lunch in this historic building located in an amazing alpine environment. We continue onto see Saskatchewan Glacier, the Hanging Wall and the Columbia Icefield where you stop for a Glacier Skywalk.

Whether it is nature’s ever changing way adapting to natural changes in the universe or climate change – you will witness this with your own eyes. We then continue to Jasper National Park with stops at Sunwapta and Athabasca Falls.

Our final destination is the Pine Bungalows, an authentic, eco-friendly and sustainable log cabin accommodation inside the Jasper National Park, surrounded by fir forest, located on the banks of the World Heritage Athabasca River where wildlife abounds. We stay 2 nights here in the cozy, peaceful and inspiring environment without televisions, telephone or internet.

Hotel: Pine Bungalows (B,L) Day 15(Sat) Jasper National Park We spend the day exploring Jasper National Park, visit Maligne Canyon, the Medicine and Maligne Lakes and a boat trip to see the Spirit Island.

Tour Itinerary Our journey takes us through some of the most spectacular scenery anywhere in the Canadian Rockies. The Maligne Valley is home to a wide range of flora and fauna, and has geological features unique anywhere else in the world. W will be searching for the abundant wildlife while explaining the history and natural wonders to be explored. Stop at Maligne Canyon to explore the two bridges, offering fantastic views of the cascading waterfall and continuing erosion of the ancient limestone.

As we continue into the Valley we will rise into the sub-alpine forests and view the expanding ranges of limestone rising out or Medicine Lake. This mysterious disappearing lake will change seasonally as the flow rates of melt waters fill and empty this basin. A stop is made to photograph this natural wonder and your guide will trace its history with you.

From Medicine Lake we continue up through forest that is prime habitat for moose, bears, and the elusive Mountain Caribou. Sightings are common but not guaranteed as we are trying to view these animals in their natural habitat.

Maligne Lake, one of the most photographed sites in the Rockies, you will embark on a boat Tour to Spirit Island, showcasing the blue green glacial water of the lake and learn the human and geologic history of the area on the comfortable enclosed boat tour. Designated as the "Best Cruise in Canada" by Readers Digest as we experience Maligne Lake's unrivaled scenery in comfort.

We return to our bungalows late afternoon, take time to enjoy a stroll in the compact and pedestrian-friendly downtown Jasper. Time permitting you may to chose to visit one of the colorful museums, the Jasper Yellowhead Museum or the Wildlife Museum.

Dinner at the Pine Bungalows . Enjoy this last evening with your Alberta guide and join in to cook a delicious farewell meal.

Day 16(Sun) Jasper - Vancouver Spend time this morning on your own taking in the sights of Jasper or quick shop for last minute souvenirs. The rail station is located near both restaurants and shopping. Transfer to the rail station early afternoon and depart Jasper at 1430 hours.

Whether sitting in your berth seat, dome car, or dining room, you will still see the beautiful Canadian Rockies as you travel west into British Columbia. Lunch, dinner and overnight on board the Canadian’s Sleeper Plus class berths. (B,L,D) Day 17(Mon) Vancouver Arrive in Vancouver at 0942 hours. Breakfast is served on board. Morning arrival into Vancouver Grand Pacific station concluding your Canadian rail adventure.
