AdventHealth’s strides in expanding its new Psychiatry and Wellbeing service line on the AdventHealth Shawnee Mission campus at 75th Street and I-35 are well underway. Thanks to a generous $1 million gift to AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation from Dr. Doug and Barbara Cusick, construction to renovate an existing 21,900-square-foot building and create a new behavioral health outpatient services center is progressing smoothly. This first phase marks a significant advancement, covering 40% of the first floor of what will ultimately become a comprehensive Psychiatry and Wellness Center.
However, there’s still much ground to cover. The journey toward a fully expanded behavioral health program requires additional donor support. While Phase 1 is a testament to the dedication of AdventHealth

and our partners, including Evardy Construction, h/d Architecture, and 5By5 Engineers, the next phase is equally vital. With your assistance, we will complete the first floor of the behavioral health outpatient clinic, establish a dedicated space for Intensive Outpatient Therapy on the second floor, and undertake a complete renovation of the Acute Inpatient Behavioral Health unit on the sixth floor of the hospital.
Our $15 million fundraising campaign was created to ensure Kansas Citians have access to the care and resources they need, in a calming environment that reflects our commitment to addressing the pressing behavioral health needs in Kansas City. A significant boost came from the Sunderland Family Foundation’s gift of $5 million, propelling us closer to our goal.
As Sam Huenergardt, CEO for AdventHealth’s Mid-America Region, emphasizes, “We are committed to whole-person care by not just focusing on physical health but the mind and spirit as well.”
This holistic approach guides our efforts as we strive to create intentional, welcoming spaces within a healing environment, ensuring that individuals in our community receive the support they need throughout their treatment journey.
Your support is instrumental in bringing this vision to life. Together, we can expand access to behavioral health services, provide comprehensive treatment options, and transform the landscape of mental health care in Kansas City. Thank you for joining us on this journey toward a healthier, more resilient community.
PHILANTHROPY BLOOMS
MUSICAL GARDEN HONORS
KC’S OLIVIA BLOOMFIELD
Introducing the Olivia Bloomfield Foundation Welcome Garden, a symbol of hope and and inclusivity located outside the B.E. Smith Family Center. This garden pays tribute to Olivia Bloomfield, one of KC Independent’s 2022 Rising Stars and a global playground design champion, whose courage persevered despite her muscular dystrophy. Though Olivia passed away at the age of 10 in July 2022, her legacy lives on through the creation of the Olivia Bloomfield Foundation.
Inspired by Olivia’s belief that “Everyone deserves a chance to play,” this adaptable garden features turf-covered ground and flower-shaped musical instruments designed for individuals of all abilities to enjoy.
“Everyone deserves a chance to play.”
Phase 1 of the garden, funded entirely by philanthropy, reflects AdventHealth’s strong commitment to inclusive spaces, echoing Olivia’s advocacy for accessibility and inclusion. As children and visitors interact with the instruments, a ripple of joy spreads, resonating the profound influence families feel from the supportive staff at the B.E. Smith Family Center. Exciting plans are already in motion for Phase 2, which will further enhance this extraordinary space.
The Bloomfields’ inspiring contributions remind us that each act of generosity has the power to make a real difference. Your kindness can leave a lasting impact, offering hope and support to those who need it. Join us in making a positive change today – your actions matter, and together, we can light a path to a world without barriers, just as Olivia envisioned.

“The B. E. Smith Family Center provides the most inclusive therapy and school experience for young children with disabilities in the Kansas City metro. The Olivia Bloomfield Foundation is honored to be a growing partner. Olivia’s life was dedicated to spreading joy and promoting inclusion. The expansion of the welcome garden will provide families with a special burst of warmth, joy, and inclusion, both when they enter and leave the building.”

PIONEERING REVOLUTIONARY CANCER CARE UNDER ONE ROOF
The new AdventHealth Cancer Institute, on the Shawnee Mission campus, is poised to revolutionize cancer care with a seamless range of services all under one roof. Thanks to a generous $600,000 grant from the John W. & Effie E. Speas Memorial Trust and other donors, the leading-edge technology within this comprehensive facility will shorten treatment duration, target challenging cancers, and minimize harm to healthy tissue.
Spanning 71,000 sq. ft. across three stories, the state-of-the-art expansion integrates Kansas City’s first and only Elekta Unity, a machine that marries an MRI with a linear accelerator. The Elekta Unity’s precise and stronger treatment beam enables the medical team to see the tumor in real time, resulting in fewer treatments, less toxicity to surrounding tissue and the treatment of cancers with radiation therapy that were previously considered untreatable.
Committed to holistic patient care, the Institute triples the service space, streamlines processes, offers clinical trials, enhances education spaces, and reduces wait times. Ongoing philanthropic support is vital to support new technology costs and to help us serve more than twice as many patients by 2030. For more information on how you can shape the future of cancer care in Kansas City, contact Laurie McCormack at laurie.mccormack@adventhealth.com.

BUILDING A HEALTHIER TOMORROW
IN ACTION ADVENTHEALTH’S COMMUNITY SCHOOL BENEFIT PROGRAM
In Shawnee’s 75th and Quivira neighborhood, AdventHealth’s Community School Benefit Program is a force for good. By collaborating with schools, faith groups, city officials, and the Johnson County Health Department and assisted by grants from AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation and Overland Park Rotary Club, program participants are addressing community needs in ameaningful way. Here are some of 2023’s most impactful initiatives that received grant support.
ENSURING SCHOOL PHYSICALS
Recognizing the challenge some students faced in getting essential health checkups, the program took proactive steps to address this issue. By organizing special back-to-school events that offered free health services for everyone, the program provided invaluable opportunities to promote wellbeing and remove barriers to healthcare access for all.
EMPOWERING GIRLS ON THE RUN
In 2022, the Community School Benefit Program began helping students get involved in Girls on the Run, an organization that aims to empower girls by promoting exercise, teaching goal setting, and boosting confidence. Initially, the program covered registration fees for 10 girls and partnered with local organizations like the Kansas City Running Club, the Overland Park Rotary, and Garmin for sustainability. AdventHealth volunteers were vital in helping with shoe sizing and distribution.
Since its inception two years ago, the Girls on the Run program in Shawnee’s 75th and Quivira neighborhood has experienced significant growth. In spring 2023, there were 60 participants, and by the fall, the number had expanded to 83.
PROMOTING HEALTHY EATING
AdventHealth Shawnee Mission launched a Healthy Cooking Club tailored for neighborhood children, with a focus on instilling lifelong healthy eating habits. Due to its success, plans are underway to broaden the reach of the Cooking Club to more schools and neighborhoods.

IMPROVING MEDICAL ACCESS
Through conversations with school nurses and social workers, program leaders identified a healthcare accessibility gap. To enhance overall wellbeing, they partnered with a local clinic to broaden services and establish sustainable healthcare solutions for families. They also launched a safety net clinic, offering financial assistance and essential equipment, with a focus on providing vaccinations to underserved immigrant and refugee children.
ENHANCING INCLUSIVITY
Financial barriers shouldn’t block a child’s passion for math. AdventHealth’s Community School Benefit Program understood this, stepping in to purchase t-shirts for children participating in the Mathletics club and promoting inclusivity and pride among all students.

In addition to their daily dedication to patients, team members at all AdventHealth Kansas City locations demonstrate year-round generosity through payroll deduction gifts and contributions to the community. Recently, employees at AdventHealth South Overland Park, B.E. Smith Family Center, and AdventHealth Surgery Center in Shawnee Mission collaborated to build, pack, load, and deliver 430 shoebox gifts, supported by donations through AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation. The gifts were distributed to to metro-area refugee children from Asia and Africa. These heartwarming contributions showcase the team’s commitment to making a positive impact in the community. Other partners, including Chapel Oak and Bethel SDA churches, collected more than 100 gifts.
Thanks to the support from various partners, this initiative was a resounding success, and the team looks forward to continuing this meaningful tradition next year!
CHARITY GOLF CLASSIC

Highlighting another great achievement, AdventHealth Kansas City Foundation Charity Golf Classic took place on August 21, 2023, at Shadow Glen Golf Club, raising an impressive $122,030. These funds will support the “Area of Greatest Need” fund, enabling the Foundation to respond promptly to urgent and unforeseen needs at the hospital.

TINY TIM HOLIDAY FANTASY
The Tiny Tim Holiday Fantasy, held on October 26, 2023, at the Overland Park Convention Center, successfully raised more than $1.1 million, which will go towards supporting children and families served at the B.E. Smith Family Center. This year, the Festive Fashion Faceoff was introduced and was a huge hit!
This charitable event owes its success to the dedication of co-chairs Patrick and Laura Sargent, emcees Jennifer and Rex Hudler, the Nigro Auction Team, and generous sponsors and donors such as Nan and Doug Smith, Gary and Stephanie Goscha, AdventHealth Shawnee Mission Medical Staff, GE Johnson Construction Company, Mark Gilman, IBEW Local Union 124, Logan Baker Foundation, Maddie’s Mission, Peter and Veronica Mallouk, MedDevelopment, Schreiber Family Charitable Trust, Richard and Barbara Shull, and Turner Construction.
Mark your calendars for our next gala on Thursday, November 7, 2024, where the community can, once again, come together for festive fun to make a positive impact.
