ACT NEWS New Faculty Member ACT would like to welcome our new lead course instructor, Leah Medwig MSN, BSN. Leah started with ACT at the beginning of February 2022. Leah received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Chatham University and began her nursing career on the cardiothoracic step-down unit in a large metropolitan teaching hospital. She became a charge nurse where she provided leadership, education, and training to nursing students and nursing staff. Leah also crosstrained in the level one trauma emergency department to further develop her training and skills. She then earned a Master’s in Nursing Administration and Management from Aspen University. While obtaining her MSN she went on to work as a Nurse Case Management Team Lead for a large health insurance company. Leah has continued to focus her energy on clinical supervision and teaching, but she is most passionate about helping students achieve their professional and personal goals to realize their full potential.

STUDENT CORNER Scope of Practice The term “scope of practice” de nes permissible activities for the members of a healthcare profession. In many cases, the scope is determined by laws within a particular jurisdiction,

professional standards boards, and the administrators of speci c healthcare facilities.

CCMA Scope of Practice Each state board offers its own scope of practice for the profession, so the duties you can’t perform in one state may be allowed in another. For example, in California, you can perform additional supportive services such as skin tests or blood draws if you’ve received proper training from your employer.

CPCT Scope of Practice Again here, duties can vary from facility to facility and often vary state to state. It is your responsibility to know what your scope of practice is in the state in which you are practicing. But generally, you may perform functions such as: •

Helping patients with the activities of daily life

•

Using diagnostic equipment such as an EKG machine

•

Collecting blood specimens

•

Inputting information into patient medical records

•

Assisting with daily activities like helping a patient bathe, dress, eat, walk, and get in and out of bed.

Check with your state's board of medicine to determine what your scope of practice is for your role.

HAPPENINGS

Live Webinars Beginning in May, we will begin to hold monthly webinars for students to attend.

The webinars will be conducted by your lead course instructor, Leah Medwig MSN, BSN. The webinars will last for 45minutes to -1 hour and will conclude with questions from the audience.

Topics for webinars include trending medical news, interesting and rare medical case reviews, and topics that pertain to your role in the healthcare eld. If there is a topic you would like to see covered, please email your course instructor. The exact dates for the monthly webinars will be announced at a later
