Approximately 100 containers with a variety of munitions rolled into Ramstein during the month of October. Master Sgt. David Head, 86th MUNS Munitions Operations section chief, noted that a delivery of such magnitude has not taken place since the late 20th century. “This is the largest shipment of its kind since Operation Allied Force, which took place in 1999,” he said, referring to a 78-day campaign where aircraft flew 900 sorties to counter ethnic cleansing in Eastern Europe. “The munitions that we received will be used for future theater operations and the evolving U.S. European Command presence.” See ARMED AND READY, Page 2

86th MDG partners with American Cancer Society for anti-tobacco campaign by Health Promotion Office 86th Medical Group The 86th Medical Group Health Promotion office is encouraging members of the Kaiserslautern Military Community to commit to healthy, smoke-free lives by participating in the American Cancer Society’s 43rd Great American Smokeout event on Ramstein Air Base, Nov. 15. “The most important thing smokers can do to improve their health is to quit smoking cigarettes and other forms of combustible tobacco,” said Brian Kirby, 86th MDG Health Promotion coordinator. “We are showing our support for people who take those first steps toward making a plan to quit. “I want to emphasize that this annual observance and the events attached are efforts towards a tobaccofree community,” Kirby continued. “Our battle is with tobacco and nicotine itself;

In fact, smoking cigarettes kills more Americans than alcohol, car accidents, HIV, guns, and illegal drugs combined. Smoking not only causes cancer. It damages nearly every organ in the body, including the lungs, heart, blood vessels, reproductive organs, mouth, skin, eyes, and bones. Quitting can be hard. It takes commitment, starts with a plan, often takes more than one quit attempt, and requires a lot of support. Getting help through counseling and sometimes prescription medications can double or triple your chances of quitting successfully. Support is important. Smoking cessation programs, telephone quit lines, the American Cancer Society’s Freshstart program, Nicotine Anonymous meetings, selfhelp materials such as books and pamphlets, and smoking counselors or coaches can be a great help.
The 86th MDG Health Promotion office is partnering with the ACS, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, to provide support as people make their plan to quit. The 86th AES train in the air to prepare their bodies for the stresses of flight. “We train on aircraft to get our bodies familiar with being in the air, to react better to the stresses of flight,” said Van Aken. “It can be taxing on the body, so as fliers, the more we’re able to fly the more our bodies will be accustomed to functioning in the air, which allows us, when the time comes, to focus on the patients instead of our fatigue.” Two flight nurses and three aeromedical evacuation technicians are the standard crew for an 86th AES mission. “My responsibility is to oversee everything is being done properly and safely,” said Vazquez. “If there’s any aircraft emergency or patient emergency, it’s my duty to communicate that to the pilot. My job is to make sure my patients and my crew are safe.” Aeromedical Evacuation has gone beyond what it used to be able to do in Vietnam, said Vazquez. It took on average 45 days to move a patient, who would only have a 75 percent survivability rate. Now patients are moved within hours and have a 99 percent survivability rate. “Our mission is to provide support and the full spectrum of aeromedical evacuation capabilities, to any global combatant commander,” said Vazquez. “We are an integral part in global mobility and global reach.”

The Furnishings Management Section maintains separate inventories for off-base accompanied and unaccompanied personnel, due to their unique funding sources. FMS is concerned with delivery delays now running up to 2 to 4 weeks for unaccompanied personnel washer and dryers. These delays are due to a heavy increase in off-base unaccompanied personnel, starting this past summer. FMS has purchased more to increase the inventory and is pursuing all available avenues to support our valued customers, to include expediting receipt of the new units. As washer and dryers are received, they are delivered to members on the unaccompanied wait list. B10 construction period The B10 at Pirmasens/Fehrbachtunnel will be reduced to one traffic lane only. The total construction period will last until Dec. 12. Motorists are asked to drive carefully and follow road signs accordingly. B420 detour The B420 in the community of Medard will be blocked for traffic until Dec. 20 while a new lane divider is being built. Road signs will designate detours. Motorists are asked for considerate driving and understanding for any inconveniences. L498 road work The L498 between Burgalben and Donsieders will be blocked for traffic until Dec. 30. KMC Post Office new website The new KMC Postal Operations SharePoint site is ready for CAC users (Active Duty/Contractor/Civilians) to use for Inprocessing, Mail Hold or Forwards, OutProcessing, and Volunteer Opportunities at the Ramstein (North/South) and Kapaun Post Offices. The site can be found through the USAFE SharePoint portal. Questions? Contact the Northside, Southside, or Kapaun Post Office Customer Service sections. Parking discs needed In certain parking lots on Ramstein Air Base, display of a parking disc is required. The maximum allowable time a car may remain in these lots is posted; the driver must set the disc to the arrival time and make it visible. The following are some parking lots where discs are required; MOMS, Ramstein Officers’ Club, the commissary, the library and the community center. Parking without displaying a disc or remaining past the allowed time could result in a citation. Visitor Control Center process and hours The Ramstein Visitor Control Center now issues passes with a scannable barcode. These passes are valid for one to three days and may be used at any KMC Air Force or KMC Army installation. Any request longer than three days will require customers to receive a long-term pass. Customers should understand with the process, waiting times may be longer than usual. The VCC opens at 6 a.m. and closes at 10 p.m., seven days a week. After hours, customers may still sign in guests at the west gate. The sponsor must be registered in IACS to sign in visitors. Furthermore, ID card holders who forget their ID may also be searched in IACS and be granted base access. 2018 recommended holiday season mailing dates, mailing tips by Air Force Staff Sgt. Timothy Moore 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs The 2018 recommended holiday season mailing dates for postal customers assigned to the European theater are: • U.S. Postal Services (USPS) Retail Ground/Space Available Mail (SAM) — Nov. 27 • First Class Mail/Priority Mail — Dec. 11 • Priority Mail Express Military Service (PMEMS) — Dec. 17 These dates are for mail originating in Europe and destined to locations in the U.S. Customers in the United States who mail to European APO/ FPO/DPO addresses should use the same recommended mailing dates. “U.S. Air Forces in Europe-Air Forces Africa postal patrons should plan ahead and mail early to ensure letters, cards, and packages arrive to intended U.S. destinations in time for the holidays,” said Lionel Rivera, USAFE-AFAFRICA Air Postal Squadron Postal Operations Flight command postal training manager. Customers can avoid long lines at the post office when they mail early. They can also take advantage of the cheaper, although slower, SAM service military post offices in Europe offer. “USPS Retail Ground/SAM service takes longer to arrive at the end destination and moves via ground once it arrives in the (U.S.),” said Rivera. Though it costs more, if you want preferred or expedited service, consider using priority mail or priority mail express military service if it is available. Most mail accepted at military post offices in Europe is flown to the United States on commercial aircraft. Once mail arrives stateside, it’s transported based on the service you selected and paid for. Customers should keep in mind packages transiting through the mail stream are handled numerous times so proper packaging is very important. The following USPS mailing tips are provided to help ensure packages arrive safely and undamaged: The Box Choose a box with enough room for cushioning material around the contents. Sturdy paperboard or corrugated fiberboard boxes are best for weights up to 10 pounds. If you’re reusing a box, cover up or mark out any old labels and markings.

USPS-Provided Boxes Priority Mail Express and Priority Mail boxes are available at no cost to the customer at the post office for items sent using either of these services. Cushioning Place cushioning around your items. Close and gently shake the box to see whether there is enough padding. Place an extra address label with the delivery and return addresses inside the package to ensure it can be delivered in case the outside label becomes damaged or falls off. Sealing Tape your box shut and reinforce the seams with 2-inch wide tape. Use clear or brown packaging tape, reinforced packing tape, or paper tape. Size Packages heavier than 70 pounds cannot be mailed. If you use Priority Mail Express Military Service or Priority Mail services, the length plus girth (distance around the thickest part of the package) cannot exceed 108 inches. When you use USPS Retail Ground/SAM, the total cannot exceed 130 inches. Correct Address Using a complete and correct address is critical for timely delivery. To find the correct spelling of a city name and state abbreviation or to find a ZIP code, visit www.usps.com. Print or type the delivery address parallel to the longest side of the package. Type or print clearly with a pen or permanent marker so that your address is legible from an arm’s length away.
Return Address Print or type your address in the upper left corner on the same side of the package as the delivery address. USPS Extra Services Extra services can provide additional protection and peace of mind. • Adult Signature — Requires the signature of someone 21 years of age or older at the recipient’s address. • Certificate of Mailing — Provides evidence of mailing. • Certified Mail — Provides proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. • Insured Mail — Provides coverage against loss or damage up to $5,000. The fee is based on the value of item. • Registered Mail is not available at all locations — Provides maximum security, includes proof of mailing at time of mailing and the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Insurance can be added up to $50,000. The fee is based on the value of item. • USPS Tracking — Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery. Free with select services. • Signature Confirmation — Provides the date and time of delivery or attempted delivery and the name of the person who signed for the item. You can request a printed copy of the signature. • Return Receipt — Provides a postcard or electronic notification with the date of delivery and signature of the recipient. • Restricted Delivery — Confirms that only a specified person, or
authorized agent, will receive a piece of mail. This service is available only if you also purchase Certified Mail, Insured Mail (over $500), Adult Signature, Signature Confirmation, or Registered Mail. Customs Declaration Form Customers can avoid waiting in line longer at post office finance windows if they complete an online customs declaration using the USPS website prior to presenting parcels and packages for mailing at the APO. Customers have several options available to them when completing required customs declarations: Option 1: Customers can chose the USPS “Click-n-Ship” feature to establish an account, complete their customs declaration, and pay for their mailing using one of several USPS approved credit cards. Option 2: Customers can print a customs declaration at home on the USPS website without establishing an account and then pay at the postal finance window when presenting their parcels and packages for mailing. Option 3: Customers can use the customer work station (if available) at the APO to go online and complete a customs declaration before presenting mail pieces at the postal finance window. Contact your local installation postmaster for additional information on how mail is dispatched and received at your location and for advice on the best service to use based on your mailing needs.

New bridge building boats arrive to European theater Story and photos by Brittany Jones 21st Theater Sustainment Command Theater Logistics Support Center-Europe highlighted the 21st Theater Sustainment Command’s objective of mission readiness with the coordination and arrival of new M-30 Bridge Erection Boats to the European theater, at Kaiserslautern Army Depot, Oct. 26. Replacing the now obsolete MK2 model boats in the European Enduring Equipment Set, the new M-30 model provides Team 21 with greater capabilities to theater training and conflict, allowing for upgraded advantages in protections, reliability, powering, and maneuverability. Kevin Harris, TLSC-E accountable officer, collaborated with U.S. government agency Program Executive Office Combat Support and Combat Service Support’s Product Manager Bridging and host nation counterparts to execute this mission. “In support of the mission, we are energized to display a tradition of service and adaptability,” Harris said. “These added assets gives the 21st a strategic tool and freedom of movement for personnel and equipment when water lanes are employed. This operation enhances the U.S. and partners strategic depth in the European theater.” The project took roughly two weeks to facilitate, once the boats

made their arrival from cargo shipment to Kaiserslautern through vehicle transfer, utilizing TLSC-E’s enhanced mobility and logistic skills. PdM Bridging’s Michigan-based team of 10 civilians, managed by Maurice Peyton, integrated product support manager, and Frank Fleming, assistant product manager, supported the six-month planning process of transporting the assets from Denver and Canada to port,
and the de-processing and inspection of the assets once in theater. “We hosted a 16-hour familiarization course for basic troubleshooting and basic operations with the local nation asset maintainers,” Peyton said. “Our goal is to make sure the equipment arrives in operational standard, train usage and new capabilities prior to hand-off of the equipment to the new unit and provide disposition of the older model’s boats.”
Fleming shared how the M-30 model brings readiness to the forefront of the military’s mission. “When we designed this boat, we really put a lot of focus on all of the ‘ilities,’ reliability, maintainability, serviceability,” he said. “The new model will truly be more robust, easier to maintain, easier to operate. We expect the boats to have a life cycle of 30 years out in the field.”

Every year when volunteers go the extra mile, they can be nominated by their supervisors for USAG RP Volunteer of the Year awards – Nov. 1 to Jan. 31, 2019. “Volunteers are an integral part to the success of garrison programs — especially youth sports,” said Greetchen Garcia, Army Community Service volunteer program. “Volunteer involvement enriches programs, amplifies resiliency and supports the entire community.” There are more than 8,000 Army
Volunteer Corps members within Kaiserslautern and Baumholder who are involved in various programs from garrison Child and Youth Services to private organizations like Boy Scouts of America and military spouses’ organizations. Their contributions make a meaningful difference in the lives of Soldiers and families every day. In fact, volunteer contributions of time and effort equaled almost $3 million last year. “Volunteers are the cornerstone of any community, and volunteerism itself – the desire to assist or give back to your fellow citizens with personal time and effort – is the lifeblood of our Army family,” said Dr. Kevin Griess, USAG RP deputy garrison commander. “That is even more true in our overseas military communities.” Although volunteering is about giving back to the community,
Garcia said VOY is a way to give back to those exceptional volunteers as well as recognize the contributions of all volunteers during the annual VOY ceremony, Apr. 26 at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh. Nominations are open to all USAG Rheinland-Pfalz volunteers who served from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31, 2018, and their hours must be verified in the Volunteer Management Information System database. The six categories volunteers can be nominated for include: ActiveDuty Service Member, ActiveDuty Single Service Member, Youth Volunteer (Up through 8th Grade), Youth Volunteer (9th to 12th Grade), Family Member and Civilian/Retiree/Local National. “We are all busy and get caught up in the demands of our personal and professional lives, but I ask that you take a moment to say thank
you to those that give back. This can be as simple as a personal note of thanks or notes to supervisors or chains of command to recognize those that have helped you or others,” Griess said. “What we would really like to see and support are nominations for larger recognition at the garrison level. Every year, we have Volunteer of the Year award ceremonies that publicly recognize some of our great volunteers. Artists present creative works, show off skills The 23rd annual creative exhibition will take place Saturday, Nov. 17, and Sunday, Nov. 18, at RamsteinMiesenbach “Congress Center – CCR” (former “Haus des Buergers.”) “Like in recent years, we again are able to present a wide range of creativity”, said organizer Marita Altherr. “A total of 75 hobby artists and crafters will show off their creative works”. Visitors will have the chance to admire and buy items made using different techniques. Crafters will work on their stands and show visitors how they create their products and what techniques they are using. For example there is Mrs Vasco, who creates light objects made of vent pipes, and another one makes
metal objects with horseshoe nails. Artists will show off a miniature fairy tale world made of felt and others will present painting in all ranges. A variety of soap creations , floristic items, ceramics for home and garden, glass, nativity scenes and many more. A glassblower will work different glass objects at his stand and a local handicraft shop will present ideas and also allow visitors to work their own objects. Hungry and thirsty visitors can take breaks at the cafeteria and taste fresh cinnamon waffles and a large variety of homemade cakes. Like in previous years, there will be a raffle. All proceeds will go to the RamsteinMiesenbach community Hospice Aid. Opening hours are 1 to 6 p.m Saturday and 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.on Sunday. Admission is free.

Stuttgart tops Ramstein in unbeaten Euro championship

by Thomas Warner contributing writer The DODEA volleyball season wound down to its final match and things were just as most people expected they would be, with Ramstein taking on Stuttgart for the Division I championship. Both teams were undefeated and Ramstein was turned back in its bid for a title as the Lady Panthers capped their own undefeated campaign by winning 25-23, 25-18, 25-10.
In defeat at the very end, Lydia Coddington had 13 digs in the finale, to go with nine kills and four blocks by Masaya Archbold. Paige Nielsen contributed eight digs and five kills in a balanced effort by everyone wearing the Ramstein blue. Ramstein (17-1) had a 12-0 regular season before cruising through five matches at the Europeans tournament without ever giving up a set loss. In straight-set victories, the Lady Royals topped Naples, Vicenza,

Kaiserslautern, SHAPE, and Wiesbaden to finally earn a shot at Stuttgart. A first place trophy did not materialize but it was a positive season nonetheless. “Unfortunately the championship game didn’t have the outcome we wanted but the girls fought their way through the entire tournament and season,” said head coach Ashley Mell Henriques, who guided RHS along with assistant Angela McClaskey. “This season, they have put in the time
and dedication and we are ending our 2018 season with a great team and a very proud coach.” Archbold and Isabella Coddington were named to the All-Europeans first team and the tournament itself was played in front of packed crowds at the new Kaiserslautern High gymnasium and other scattered venues in the KMC area. Ramstein has several players who will return and make the program one to likely watch
again for high honors in 2019. Ramstein had not played Stuttgart in the regular season but was quite familiar with the recent prowess of the Lady Panthers’ program. Stuttgart won DODEA championships in 2015 and 2016, then made it to the finals again last season before falling to Lakenheath. It turned out to be a victory party for SHS but handshakes and congrats were handed out by both squads as sportsmanship ruled the day.

Timeliness Whether the event is social or business, punctuality in Germany is important. An invitation for dinner at eight usually means anywhere between 7:55 and 8 p.m. If you are planning a party, tell your German friends the time you actually want and expect them to arrive — don’t plan to have that 15 minute American buffer zone to put the finishing touches on your hors d’oeuvres. There are reports of an “Akademisches Viertel” (academic quarter-hour) clause which gets you off the hook if you are less than 15 minutes late. The best thing to do is just to be on time. If you have a meeting or are invited to a social function, and you find yourself running late, call to announce your late arrival (preferably before the time you were expected). Remember that in Germany, time is usually on the twenty-four hour scale, like in the military, not the twelve-hour one. Sometimes when speaking, Germans will use the 12 hour clock. Usually, this does not cause confusion. Very few people in Germany eat dinner at 8 in the morning.

Beautiful One-Day Hike Near the KMC

Wolfstein is only half an hour from the Kaiserslautern Military Community of Kaiserslautern, Ramstein and Landstuhl and the home to one of the greatest oneday hikes in Germany. The first stage of the Pfälzer Höhenweg, around the town of Wolfstein in the northwest of the region, allows you to enjoy a small but scenic part of the 100km long trail.

“It was, quite simply, the best one-day hiking trip we had ever done.” states Michael, blogger at Easyhiker.co.uk The loop around town, at a length of just under 12 km, is neither too exhausting nor so short that it would deny you the feeling of accomplishment (which then entitles you to an extra large serving at the dinner table). The trail leads you clockwise around the town – imagine Wolfstein on the “12” – and provides a surprising degree of variety. In the beginning, in particular, you will get splendid views over the hills around you,
but there is a lot of forest, too, all rounded off with a couple of castle ruins near the end.

Simply turn left out of the hotel and follow the markers to the Youth Hostel (the “Jugendherberge”) – you are now on a “feeder route” of the Höhenweg – on a fairly steep climb uphill and just continue straight – into the Höhenweg trail proper – when the hostel appears on your right hand side. From then on, just follow the trail markers – until the very end when you can already see the town from above. Which is when you must descend rather than continue uphill, which will be so obvious you can’t miss it! Before, however, there were a

few close calls. None closer than 2 km from the end when you must take a steep right turn off the path on the ridge. The sign on the trunk that leads the way is not just a “reassurance” sign that has been put, for whatever reason, a little further back into the 2nd row of trees (of which there have been quite a few till then): you really have to descend down the slope here.

What really confused us was the total absence of any further sign until the end of the descent – we had already been here and returned half way down to continue further up on the ridge (wrongly) before we realized that this appeared to lead us nowhere. Just be on your guard throughout, and remember: if you have not spotted a “reassurance marker” for a few hundred meters, this is normally an indication that you have gone wrong. Better to return and to establish where you have made an error than to continue in the hope that, as long as your “general direction” is right, you will be fine.

Something else that is good about one-day hikes: if you have selected your hotel in advance (and with a certain degree of care), you will have a good dinner waiting for you, and this can put a spring in your step, too. The restaurant of the Landgasthof Hotel Königsberg is run by Christian Schneider who has trained with 3-star chefs across Germany but returned to his native town to serve as the chef de cuisine in his parents’ hotel.
