Five facts to know about Veterans Day

Veterans Day is a well-known American holiday, but there are also a few misconceptions about it — like how it’s spelled or whom exactly it celebrates. To clear some of that up, here are the important facts you should know.
1
Veterans Day does NOT have an apostrophe
A lot of people think it’s “Veteran’s Day” or “Veterans’ Day,” but they’re wrong. The holiday is not a day that “belongs” to one veteran or multiple veterans, which is what an apostrophe implies. It’s a day for honoring all veterans — so no apostrophe needed.

Veterans Day is NOT the Same as Memorial Day
A lot of Americans get this confused, and we’ll be honest — it can be a little annoying to all of the living veterans out there.
Memorial Day is a time to remember those who gave their lives for our country, particularly in battle or from wounds they suffered
in battle. Veterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace — dead or alive — although it’s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices.

It was originally called Armistice Day, commemorating the end of World War I World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, the fighting
ended about seven months before that when the Allies and Germany put into effect an armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
For that reason, Nov. 11, 1918, was largely considered the end of “the war to end all wars” and dubbed Armistice Day. In 1926, Congress officially recognized it as the end of the war, and in 1938, it became an official holiday, primarily a day set aside to honor veterans
of World War I.
But then World War II and the Korean War happened, so on June 1, 1954, at the urging of veterans service organizations, Congress amended the commemoration yet again by changing the word “armistice” to “veterans” so the day would honor American veterans of all wars.
For a while, Veterans Day’s date was changed, too, and it confused everybody.
Congress signed the Uniform Holiday Bill in 1968 to ensure that a few federal holidays — Veterans Day included — would be celebrated on a Monday. Officials hoped it would spur travel and other family activities over a long weekend, which would stimulate the economy.

On Oct. 25, 1971, the first Veterans Day under this new bill was held. We’re not sure why it took three years to implement, but not surprisingly, there was a lot of confusion about the change, and many states were unhappy, choosing to continue to recognize the day as they previously had — in November.
Within a few years, it became pretty apparent that most U.S. citizens wanted to celebrate Veterans Day on Nov. 11, since it was a matter of historic and patriotic significance. So on Sept. 20, 1975, President Gerald Ford signed another law (Public Law 94-97), which returned the annual observance to its original date starting in 1978.

Other countries celebrate it, too, in their own ways
World War I was a multinational effort, so it makes sense that our allies also wanted to celebrate their veterans on Nov. 11. The name of the day and the types of commemorations differ, however.
Canada and Australia both call Nov. 11 “Remembrance Day.” Canada’s observance is pretty similar to our own, except many of its citizens wear red poppy flowers to honor their war dead. In Australia, the day is more akin to our Memorial Day.
Great Britain calls it “Remembrance Day,” too, but observes it on the Sunday closest to Nov. 11 with parades, services and two minutes of silence in London to honor those who lost their lives in war.

comm equipment and capabilities,” said U.S. Air Force Maj. Sean Miller, 1st CBCS director of operations. “We have a full complement of comm equipment ranging from small van packable equipment to large stacks capable of replacing an entire base’s communication capabilities if needed.”
The newest capability of the 1st CBCS is the prototype Mobile Digital Infrastructure vehicle, a mobile small form factor communications package.
“A lot of what’s in the MDI is the equipment that we use day in and day out when in smaller, more austere locations,” Miller said.
The flexibility and mobility offered by having the essential communications equipment in the MDI is proving to have a big effect on the capabilities of our personnel to stay informed in the rapidly changing nature of the modern battlefield.
“The primary purpose of the MDI van is the ability to extend C2 (command and control) capabilities,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Airman Tyler Tucci, 1st CBCS tactical communications technician. “With the van we are able to extend the forward operating center down range.”
C2 allows our personnel to have realtime battlespace information and plays a crucial role in contingency operations. Its capabilities include surveillance operations, radar control, air weapons monitoring, airlift planning and data management.
Tuchi described how the MDI acts as a relay node, providing the capability to communicate with aircraft utilizing Link-16, a tactical datalink communication system used to transmit and exchange real-time situational awareness data, as well as take in data from controllers and tactical air control party and send all of that information back to the air operations center. This consolidates the delivery of real-time data, allowing leaders and mission planners to have the full picture of the battle space, enabling more precise and informed decisions.
Another critical capability that the MDI provides is mobility. Being able to remain agile not only increases the flexibility of operations, but also ensures the safety of our Airmen.
“The mobility factor is huge,” Miller said. “In our theater we have a lot of moving pieces and aircraft are constantly moving around. That paired with the constant threat of antiaccess aerial denial, we need to be able to move around where our assets go.”
As the 1st CBCS continues to develop the MDI, they will remain at the forefront of C2 capabilities, reinforcing our commitment to maintaining strategic advantages in Great Power Competition.

USAG Rheinland-Pfalz CYS in-service training day empowers staff, builds resilience

U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Child and Youth Services hosted an in-service training and recognition day Oct. 11 at the Landstuhl Teen Center, which focused on comprehensive training and resiliencebuilding for CYS staff.
As with all garrison employees, foundational and professional training is essential for CYS staff development.
“These training days are important for bringing us together and allows us to sharpen our skills and professional growth so we can offer better care to children,” said Jared Barrick, CYS coordinator.
CYS supervisory training specialist Melissa Gironda echoed Barrick’s view.
“Having well-trained educators who demonstrate a high level of competence and pro-
fessionalism builds strong partnerships with parents who then gain confidence leaving their children in our care day to day.”
Before the training began, over 40 CYS staff members were recognized for their hard work and dedication by receiving awards from their respective CYS center’s director.
The day’s jam-packed agenda featured classes from CYS trainers as well as experts from the garrison’s workforce development office, the safety office and the USAREUR-AF Ready and Resilient Performance Center. Topics ranged from basic food and safety practices for Direct Care Staff, to leadership skills, resiliency strategies, special needs documentation and effective communication.
With classes tailored for all CYS roles, no stone was left unturned regarding the team’s overall development.
“The special needs paperwork training was especially helpful,” said Cassandre
Ferguson, administrative support assistant at Landstuhl School Age Center. “It refreshed us on useful tools and information we might not use daily but are crucial for our program’s smooth operation.”
Striving for excellence
Building on October 2023’s training, this event took a hands-on approach with interactive workshops, real-life scenarios and group discussions to strengthen CYS staff’s resilience and engagement.
“This in-service day prioritized our mental well-being, as well as recognizing achievements and reinforcing our knowledge,” said Gironda.
Months of planning went into identifying key improvement areas from previous participant feedback and new recognition categories, including certificates for Individual Development Plan completion, LEAD course graduates and CDA recipients, which high-
lighted individual achievements and growth within the organization.
Dedicated to progress
CYS staff are encouraged to join upcoming developmental opportunities. Gironda and her team are planning an Army Leadership Excellence & Development course scheduled for early 2025.
USAG Rheinland-Pfalz’s Directorate of Family Morale Welfare and Recreation’s Child and Youth Services deliver high-quality programs designed to benefit military children, youth, and students while simultaneously aiding the Army Family by mitigating conflicts that can arise between mission readiness and parental responsibilities.

From Enlisted to Officer: 21st TSC Soldier lives Army American Dream

In 2021, Sgt. 1st Class Perla Y. Gonzalez became one of the first three enlisted Soldiers to be accepted into the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps’ Funded Legal Education Program, or FLEP. On Oct. 18, Gonzalez became one of the newest Army lawyers and direct commissioned first lieutenants at the Kleber Kaserne courthouse.
Gonzalez’s long journey to become an attorney started when she graduated from the University of California — Santa Barbara with her undergrad in pre-law in 2006. In 2013, Gonzalez was inspired by her husband, Jose Pantoja, to join the Army, however, she had to join as an enlisted Soldier because she didn’t have her U.S. citizenship.
“I always knew I wanted to go to law school since my undergrad, but I didn’t have a way to pay for it, so I joined the Army,” said Gonzalez. “My husband was prior service. He had an amazing experience, so I wanted to try it.”
During her enlistment, Gonzalez held the military occupation specialty of a 68A, a biomedical equipment specialist. Gonzalez figured she would choose the medical field because her experience could easily transfer over into the civilian world.
Gonzalez said that despite how much she loved her job, law school was always in the back of her mind, so much so that she started the expiration term of service process to separate from the military in 2020 to pursue her dream of becoming a lawyer.
That year, fate came in the form of her previous commander calling her to inform her that Noncommissioned Officers could now apply for the FLEP. Gonzalez was informed in July that the packets were due in November, so she initially had doubts that she could make the deadline. Not only had she not taken any Law School Admission Tests, but she was also in the middle of completing her master’s degree, and homeschooling her daughter, Yelis, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I was like there is no way I’m going to make it into the program, I don’t think I have any chance,” said Gonzalez. “[My commander] said ‘If you don’t even try, then you will really not have any chance.’ So, I got on a study program to take the LSATs, I got all of my transcripts, I got my interview, and I sent my packet the day it was due. It was a long time coming, it had always been my goal to be a lawyer.”
It was more than just gathering and filling out paperwork for Gonzalez to be accepted into the program. She overcame numerous challenges, a big one being the outbreak of COVID-19. Aside from paying out of pocket to take the LSAT, Gonzalez had to take it online, but on a specific IP address that helps prevent cheating.
To meet this requirement, Gonzalez paid for a flight from Vilseck, Germany, where she was stationed at the time, to Houston, Texas, to take her LSAT to make sure her IP addressed matched her physical location. Gonzalez explained how she took her test in a hotel room and flew back to Germany the next day.
Another challenge Gonzalez overcame was finding Army JAG personnel to conduct her FLEP interview. Being from the medical field, Gonzalez didn’t know any JAG personnel, so she had to call different offices for assistance. Despite being told the FLEP was only for JAG Soldiers, Gonzalez continued to push to reach her goal.
Even after being accepted into law school, Gonzalez faced new challenges. Being the only parent among a class of law students in their 20s, Gonzalez initially felt like she couldn’t keep up as she didn’t have the same amount of time to study as her child-free classmates.
“Law school has so many very bright people,” said Gonzalez. “They were super prepared, and they would be answering questions left and right, and I was like oh my God, I don’t know if I can make it, I don’ t know if this is for me.
But when the grades came out, your confidence increases because you’re like ok I do belong here, and my grades showed it.”
Gonzalez’s sheer grit and determination paid off, and today she can finally say that she has accomplished her longterm goal of becoming an attorney.
“What I learned at the end is it’s not a competition with your peers, it’s not what everyone else is doing, it’s what you’re doing,” said Gonzalez. “You have to push yourself and you can only compare yourself to how you were yesterday,
today and how you’re going to be tomorrow. It’s you against you.”
Col. Katherine S. Gowel, the 21st Theater Sustainment Command SJA, conducted Gonzalez’s commissioning ceremony, and then her Oath of Commissioned Officers.
“[She is] one of the very first NCOs to go to law school per the Army Funded Legal Education Program and then be commissioned as a judge advocate,” said Gowel. “It’s pretty exciting. It’s history making and it’s awesome. We are lucky we get to witness it.”
During the commissioning cer-
emony, Gowel spoke of Gonzalez’s journey from moving to the United States as a teenager to where she is now, calling her story the “Army American Dream.”
“When you’re an officer and a judge advocate, you’re a dual professional,” said Gowel. “As an officer, you’re an expert at leadership, decision making and advising commanders. As an attorney, you’re going to be a legal advisor, supervising paralegals and representing Soldiers as a legal assistance attorney.”
Now that she has finally completed her goal of becoming an attorney, Gonzalez said she is excited to start her position at the Kleber Legal Assistance Office.
“To be honest with you I am not nervous,” said Gonzalez. “I am actually very excited because I love what I do. I am looking forward to getting my clients and doing my job.”
For anyone who is thinking about applying for the FLEP, or any other self-improvement program, Gonzalez’s advice is to go for it.
“For all the leadership, it’s very important to support your Soldiers because you don’t know how far they can go,” said Gonzalez. “And for the Soldiers, you have to believe in yourself and do the work, because if you love the Army, the Army will love you back.”

More than seven decades of Landstuhl Regional Medical Center’s legacy is built on the foundation of excellence in military medicine, providing healthcare to our larger military community while maintaining a ready medical force of soldiers poised and postured to move, shoot, and communicate as well as provide medical care in an event of a large-scale combat operation on the NATO’s eastern flank.
To hone those complex battlefield and medical skills in a realistic environment, LRMC and its network of combat medics from the Baumholder and Wiesbaden health clinics converged upon an urban training site in Germany to conduct a first-of-its-kind, multiclinic, combined field training exercise Sep. 26.
More than 70 soldiers from LRMC’s Medical Readiness Battalion, the European Medical Simulation Center, 44th Expeditionary Signal BattalionEnhanced along with detachments from the 421st MultiFunctional Medical Battalion, 254th Combat Operational Stress Control and 94th Veterinary Detachment took part in the training.
“It was an incredible event
demonstrating the effectiveness of collaborating with other LRMC health clinics along with units across the Medical Readiness Command, Europe and our supported battalions at Baumholder to facilitate a demanding and realistic training for our soldiers,” said U.S. Army Lt. Col. Max Smith, commander of Baumholder Army Health Clinic.
According to exercise planners, for the individual combat medic, this event served to build their confidence in the ability to perform warfighting tasks, broaden the scope of understanding of field medicine, and to validate their proficiency in executing those tasks.
“We are tasked to train ourselves and our soldiers to fight, in tough, realistic environments, and to meet those standards and maintain our skills. This team, comprised several different units, worked together to provide that caliber of training,” said U.S. Army Sgt. 1st Class Kaleb Richardson, the lead training facilitator and Baumholder Army Health Clinic Detachment Sergeant. “I was encouraged by the high spirit of our soldiers, rising to the challenges presented by the European Medical Simulation Center team, and provided by the beautiful rainy Baumholder weather. These troops brought the intensity honing their craft to answer the call.”

21st TSC hosts local German high school for First Fall Classic 2024

St. Martin might ride through your town on a white horse and bring joy to children. Many villages offer parades, music and children cheerfully singing and carrying colorful handmade lanterns. In workshops visitors can watch exhibitors at their stands, Christa Koch will offer handdyed yarns and demonstrate skills on the spinning wheel and a floristry workshop will also take place. The scent of cinnamon wafers and Christmas-decorated stands will swing visitors into the holiday season, and a cafeteria awaits you with coffee and homemade cakes. A richly stocked raffle will round off the offer, while the proceeds from the raffle will be donated to charity.

Berlin is not only the capital and largest city in Germany with its 3.7 million inhabitants. It has always been known as the capital of diversity and freedom. In the roaring 1920’s it was famed for creativity, a wild nightlife scene and innovation. Due to the many “speeding” cars (at about 20 km/h) the city installed the first traffic light in Germany in 1924. What an anniversary!
For forty years it was also the only city in the world surrounded by a wall and located in an isolated location amidst a different country. It is a metropolis that sets trends and is full of surprises. We’ve collected a few facts that you may not know:
• Berlin is geographically nine times larger than Paris and feels much less cramped. Berlin has 4,000 inhabitants per square kilometer, while
Paris houses 21,000 people in the same space. It is also home to the largest community of Turks outside of Türkiye with 110,000 people.
• The longest open-air gallery in the world. East Side Gallery is 1.3 kilometers long and is part of the former wall. It displays over 100 murals from artists around the world, is located on the banks of the Spree River in Friedrichshain and draws up to two million visitors a year.
• There are more museums than rainy days in Berlin. One-hundred eighty museums outdo the average 106 rainy days of the year. The most visited ones are Hamburger Bahnhof, Sammlung Boros, Gropius-Bau, König Galerie, Berlinische Gallerie and Check Point Charlie.
• The public transport system is 4,473 kilometers in total with trains, trams and buses running 24/7. This means,
that when running all day, the transport system goes around the earth 8.7 times a day. In comparison, Paris has 215 kilometers of public transport and London 400 kilometers.
• Berlin Zoologischer Garten is the most visited zoo in Europe. It is home to over 20,000 animals and 1,300 different species on an area of 82 acres. It also offers fun activities for young and older visitors and allows some interaction with animals.
• Döner spits galore! It is noted that a Turkish immigrant introduced the first Döner Kebab in Berlin in the late 1980’s. He adapted the style from the typical version in his home country. One spit has about 63 kilograms of meat and 950 spits are sold per day, equaling 60 tons of meat per year!
• There are around 1,700 bridges in Berlin, the most attractive and famous one is the
Oberbaumbrücke between Kreuzberg and Friedichshain, not far from the East Side Gallery.
• Thus, it has more bridges than Venice. Berlin also has more waterways than Amsterdam, Stockholm and Venice together, so hop on a boat and cruise the city.
• Berlin is one of the greenest cities in Germany. About 50 percent of the city consists of buildings, but roughly one third is green with woods, parks, gardens, rivers and lakes. Tiergarten located near Brandenburger Tor is 280 hectares large, somewhat smaller than Central Park in New York City.
• Hungry and thirsty at midnight? Then venture to a Späti, (literally a “latey”) a small convenient store where you can buy essentials at any time of day or night just around the corner. There are 1,000 Spätis spread around the city.
• Capital of dog lovers. In Berlin you can take your furry friend (almost) everywhere and there are about 200,000 dogs, while the number of cats, pet rabbits and guinea pigs is unknown. Unfortunately, this also amounts to annually 55 tons of droppings.
• Single capital of the German republic. Up until 2022 Berlin had 49.8 percent of singles or people not married. In 2023 Munich topped this record with 50.2 percent singles, but Berlin still has the overall highest number with 1.8 million individuals.
• Berlin recorded about 12 million visitors in 2023, thereof 1.2 million Americans. Were you one of them? If not, it’s time to hit the road and explore for yourself!
Last, but not least, the Berlin Wall was opened on the evening of Nov. 9, 1989, 35 years ago, another occasion to celebrate!

Unexpected fun and adventure
I can’t even begin to describe how awesome it was to take a day trip to the Copper Mine of Fischbach (or Kupferbergwerk Fischbach, in German). My friends and I had so much fun, which was a bit unexpected. Because, you know, it’s a copper mine. I know I should be more open to these experiences, but I have just never had an interest in copper mines.
Well, that was until I met our wonderfully energetic tour guide who loves to practice speaking English. He was so excited to have an American writing about his copper mine that he took us on a very detailed 90-minute tour!
War, ghosts, and mining taken seriously
I won’t give you the full list of everything we learned, because I don’t want to spoil the surprises. Let’s just say that you’ll get a colorful education when it comes to the Fischbach copper mines and (at a minimum) the following subjects:
• The French Revolution and the 30-Year War
• Stalactites, which are the pointy tapering structures that hang like icicles from the roof of a cave
• How to prospect a mine
• Why mineworkers actually did look like Snow White’s Seven Dwarfs
• What a 12-hour day in the life of a mineworker was like
• Why you would never want to be an oldtime German copper miner — did you know that if a mineworker showed up late for work two times in his lifetime, he could be put to death?
• Miners’ beliefs in ghosts and fairy dust (we saw both!)
What to expect
Our tour started with a quick hike of about 400 meters uphill. This might be a good time to recommend that you
wear comfy walking shoes. I did not. Nevertheless, the walk was easy enough and we arrived at the mine entrance where we were told that we would be required to wear hard hats. Wait, what? Oh, only for safety in case of falling rocks. Our guide reassured us that no one has been injured from falling rocks.
As you might imagine, the mine is damp and cold inside. However, it is very well lighted and we did get to see a lot of fun stuff, including things like Malachite and Azurite, which are apparently signs that let miners know that copper ore is below. We even got to see and touch a beautiful blue-green “baby gemstone” that was being formed. The color seemed out of place among the plain rocks, but it was breathtakingly beautiful. We were encouraged to touch it — then our guide told us it would be worth about 15,000 Euros if they mined it.
Tours and special events
Opportunities abound for further learning during the tour. Check out the Copper Hut, where you can see a a great demonstration of how potential copper was removed from the mine, crushed, melted and then became actual copper. Also, as long as you’re taking a tour later than April 1, your tour can get a bit… batty. That’s when bats wake up and fly out of the mine. Yes, that’s right. BATS! We were allowed to go into this part of the mine for about 10 minutes to see them as they slept. I tried to take pictures, but was too worried that my flash would wake one, which would have made me freak out. Thanks to our intrepid guide, we also got a quick lesson on bats and their hibernation.
General Information
The Fischbach Copper Mine hosts a variety of special events for parties of 15 or more, including birthday parties, weddings, catered dinners, wine tastings, etc. Concerts occur here, as well, along with dungeon-
themed tours during Halloween and a religious ceremony during the Christmas season.
From November through February, guided tours are normally offered at 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. From March through October, the mine is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last tour leaving at 4:15 p.m. The tour takes about one hour. Check
the mine’s website for specific opening information.
