by Senior Airman Devin M. Rumbaugh 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs Exercise Operation Varsity 19-01 is set to begin on Ramstein Air Base, Germany Feb. 25, 2019, and is expected to cause delays. While the population at large may experience curtailed services and delays, exercises like this reinforce the 86th Airlift Wing commander’s priority of readiness. “Base exercises are not convenient, but they are necessary to ensure that we as a wing are not only able to provide allied support, but also deter adversaries,” said Brig. Gen. Mark A. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander. “To do this, we are asking personnel to be patient as we practice like it’s a realworld scenario.” Operation Varsity 19-01 is the first in a series of exercises planned for 2019. Air Force liaison officer recognized as Airlifter of the Week

U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Antwan Williams, 86th Medical Squadron Air Force Liaison Officer, is recognized by U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th Airlift Wing commander, for being the 86th AW’s Airlifter of the Week at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Feb. 14. Williams went above and beyond his normal duties providing advanced medical and quality of life care for two patients being airlifted home.

Story and photo by Staff Sgt. Jonathan Bass 86th Airlift Wing Public Affairs An 86th Medical Squadron Airman was recognized by the 86th Airlift Wing commander as the Airlifter of the Week at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, Feb. 14. Staff Sgt. Antwan Williams, 86th MDS Air Force liaison officer, performed above and beyond his duties as an AFLO on two separate occasions, providing both advanced medical and quality of life care to en-route patients. Williams, a native of Covington, Tennessee, worked a last-minute critical care transport, organizing with several wing and higher headquarters agencies to obtain orders for a patient. In addition, he noticed that the patient needed Emergency Family Member Travel benefits. Williams updated the patient’s status, thus allow-

ing the patient’s family to travel with him at no cost. On another occasion, Williams’ SelfAid and Buddy Care triage skills allowed him to notice a severe medication allergic reaction. Williams acted quickly, escorting the patient to the emergency room, potentially saving the patient’s life. “As an AFLO, working primarily with the U.S. Army, you often present the first Air Force face someone sees,” said Brig. Gen. Mark R. August, 86th AW commander. “Your work is crucial toward saving lives of service members. The United States spares no expense when getting our wounded back home. I wouldn’t have it any other way; and I couldn’t be prouder of the work you do here.” The Airlifter of the Week program recognizes Airmen who, through hard work and dedication, make the 86th AW the World’s Best Wing.

21 TSC member recognized for 70 years of dedicated government service by Brittany Jones and Capt. Doug Magill 21st Theater Sustainment Command Every morning, Theodore Spellacy, 88, 21st Theater Sustainment Command deputy chief of personnel, walks the halls of his office building greeting colleagues as he makes his way to his fourth-floor office on Panzer Kaserne. Despite Spellacy’s mild-but-cheerful presence, many are unaware he has been shaping the 21st Theater Sustainment Command for 41 years and serving the U.S. Army for 70. Spellacy was recognized for his service during a length of service ceremony, Feb. 6, at the Kaiserslautern Community Activity Center on Daenner Kaserne in Kaiserslautern. “I honestly do not know how I ended up here today,” Spellacy said. “I joined the military many years ago because I wanted to serve my country. That’s just what you did back then. The opportunity has afforded me and will afford junior Soldiers countless occasions to grow and develop as a leader and as a person. I went to work, I did my job, and I’ve loved almost every minute of it.” Maj. Gen. Steven A. Shapiro, 21st Theater Sustainment Command commanding general, recognized the contributions of Spellacy and his wife, Irmtraud. Shapiro presented her with a certificate of appreciation for patriotic civilian service. “You can’t do this without a foundation of family,” Shapiro said to Spellacy. “We wanted to make sure that we recognized your wife as well.” Spellacy started his military career at the age of 17 when he enlisted into the United States Army from Steubenville, Ohio, in 1948. “Back then, you graduate high school and that’s just what you do,” Spellacy said. “You join the Army.” He continued to have a military career that spanned more than 30 years where he would serve several tours in South Korea, be a part of the first graduating Army Ranger training class in 1950, and serve as a Ranger instructor at Ranger Mountain Camp in Dahlonega, Georgia. Spellacy also sat on the Army’s first command sergeants major board and helped design the new roles and responsibilities of the position. He was assigned to the 21st Support Command — now the 21st Theater Sustainment Command — in 1978, before retiring from uniformed Army service in 1984 as the second command sergeant major in the command’s history.

Photo by Sgt. Benjamin Northcutt, 21st Theater Sustainment Command

“Making command sergeant major was the real highlight of my career,” Spellacy said. “You see, when I started my career the highest rank an enlisted Soldier could make was an E-7. Then the Army came out with sergeant major. I was in the second group to make sergeant major; then the Army came out with command sergeant major, and I was in the second group to be selected for that. It was a proud time to serve the Army and see all the changes.” Spellacy attributes his fulfilling Army career to understanding one fact about military leadership. “The leadership role of command sergeant major was new back then and many of my colleagues would brag about the title and talk about how

they have 15,000 Soldiers working for them,” Spellacy said. “I’d say, ‘they ain’t working for you, you are working for them.’ The Soldiers are not serving me as a sergeant major, I was serving them as a leader.” But in Spellacy’s long-standing Army career, before becoming command sergeant major, he did question twice if the military was right for him. Spellacy left the Army twice, but rejoined less than 90 days later. Spellacy said Soldiers at the time could separate for less than 90 days, rejoin, and lose only 90 days of time in service at their current pay grade. “I got out of the military,” he said. “In those days you could get out of the service for up to 90 days. I wanted to see something else, do something

else. Maybe go to school. Not too long into my 90 days, I got a letter from the Army asking me to come back. I jumped back on the opportunity to serve again. I missed it. It was a little after the second World War, and everyone was stepping back up to the call.” The call was also what brought Spellacy back to government service following his Army retirement. “When I started looking at retirement, I really wasn’t sure what I would be doing or what life would look like after the army, but luckily I had several job offers and I just rolled directly into civil service,” Spellacy said. “I knew I wanted to continue to serve my country so it was a good fit to stay with the TSC.”

Electronic cigarettes: How are they affecting our youth? By Senior Airman Rebecca Valadez 86th Dental Squadron Electronic cigarettes, or e-cigarettes are a relatively new form of tobacco product, and many people have questions regarding the effect they may have on our body. Recent health studies show that e-cigarettes contain dangerous toxins that can cause cancer, and most of these toxic agents are found in the fruit flavorings that contain high levels of chemical substance called “acrylonitrile.” These flavorings with carcinogenic chemicals can cause “popcorn lung,” which is a severe respiratory condition. Other risks associated with e-cigarette use include mood disorders and permanent problems with impulse control. It is important for the consumers to always be wary of the fact that e-cigarettes contain more than just water vapor, and a lot of chemicals can be added to flavor them. Another alarming fact about e-cigarettes is that they can contain enough nicotine to lead to an addiction. Some brands may have a car-

tridge that provides a shocking 200 puffs, which equals the amount of nicotine in a pack of cigarettes. While 99 percent of e-cigarettes sold in U.S. convenience stores contain nicotine, according to the CDC, one study found that 63 percent of e-cigarette users ages 15-24 did not know that

the product they were inhaling contained nicotine. A current concern is that once nicotine addiction develops, some adolescents may seek other forms of nicotine consumption. In a recent Center for Disease Control study, 20 percent of high

school students admitted to using at least one type of tobacco product. This study also found that 11 percent of those students had used a tobacco product within the past 30 days. The Federal Drug Administration is now taking action to try to ban certain fruit flavors in hopes of minimizing the toxins in some of these e-cigarettes. It is incredibly important for parents to educate and talk with their children on the negative lifelong effects of nicotine use, in any form, so that long term harm of tobacco products can be reduced. New school age center brings joy to students at Sembach Kaserne Story and photos by Erinn Burgess U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Public Affairs U.S. Army Garrison RheinlandPfalz officially opened a new school age center at Sembach Kaserne with a ribbon cutting, Feb. 13. The new Sembach School Age Center replaces the former facility, which was located within Sembach Elementary School. The project began several years ago, with garrison Child and Youth Services professionals determined to find a space to best fit the needs and interests of school-aged children in the Sembach community. Sembach SAC Director Jennifer Hodges said being in the new facility feels like moving from a two-bedroom apartment into a 6,000-squarefoot house. “We’re very appreciative that we were able to partner with the school for so many years to have a program there. We only had two rooms, so we did our best to accommodate everybody’s needs and interests. Now, we have this huge, sprawling, state-of-the-art facility with multiple activity areas, and children are able to flow and choose what spaces and activities to participate in based on their personal interests,” she said. The new SAC provides a variety

schoolwork and educational activities. The Rising Stars room is designed to facilitate the performing arts program and includes musical instruments, a dress-up wardrobe, a play kitchen and more. In the Messy Mania room, students participate in arts and crafts and science projects. Finally, the Fit Zone gets kids moving with organized games, and the atrium provides a snack area, tabletop games and social recreation. Hodges, who also oversees the Landstuhl SAC, said the school age centers are designed to provide a continuation of learning from school into after-care programs. “We facilitate that continuation of learning by having close partnerships with our local schools and focus on programming that supports the ideology of fun with a purpose. This approach to programming allows youth to continue to develop vital life skills that will make them successful and responsible citizens later in life.” The facility soft-opened in January, and Hodges said it has been wellreceived by the youth participants and parents alike. “It was so great to see the joy on the

children’s faces the very first day they came into the center. They wanted to try everything, go in every room and engage with all the new materials and supplies. There was so much joy with the children and so much excitement with the families - they’ve deserved this center for so long,” she said. Opening the SAC has allowed CYS to support more families with 15 additional spaces in the larger facility. The school age center underwent an accreditation site visit in January to ensure the programming environment

and program itself were up to standards. Hodges said they were excited to receive news that not only was the facility up to standard, but the Council on Accreditation expedited the accreditation, meaning there were zero deficiencies or findings in either the Landstuhl or Sembach School Age Care programs. Ellen Leten, Sembach SAC assistant director, echoed Hodges’ excitement regarding the accreditation. Leten, who has helped lead efforts on the new Sembach SAC project from the beginning stages, praised the support of the center staff in the weeks leading up to and during the accreditation process. Staff worked harder and longer hours to ensure the program would open on time and within operating standards, she said. “From seeing the facility being built all the way to it actually being open has been such a joy. The hard work has paid off knowing we are supporting our military families and their children. It’s all worth it to see the smiles on their faces,” Leten said. Continued improvements to family and youth programs throughout the Rheinland-Pfalz area remain a priority for USAG RP leadership. Deputy Garrison Commander Dr. Kevin Griess said children are the core of our community. “It is with great pleasure that we invest time, effort and money into our facilities and programs to support the children,” said Dr. Griess. “This new school age center is a tribute to the staff and community who operate and use it. Congratulations to all!” For information about CYS programs or to register your youth, call Parent Central Services at DSN 541-9066 or Comm. 0611-143-541-9066, or stop by Bldg. 162 on Rhine Ordnance Barracks.

The idea behind the week is to motivate, support and encourage military families to save money, reduce debt and build wealth. Taking part is easy – just take the Military Saves pledge online and start saving toward a particular goal. People who take the pledge can elect to receive a monthly newsletter with advice for growing savings and reducing debt. Military Saves also gives service members and their families a chance to evaluate their financial status, Burton said. “It’s as simple as a budget – know what money you have coming in, going out and left over at the end of the month. Any discretionary spending (money spent on non-essential things) you can cut back on,” she explained. “Think of it this way – ‘What is the trade-off?’ – Do I spend money on new shoes now or have a healthy retirement savings 20 years down the line?” Saving money for the future can involve the whole family, Burton said. “There are so many life skills that parents teach their children – teamwork, communication, leadership and discipline, but do they teach them about the value of money? Children who see their parents exhibit good saving and investing habits is priceless,” Burton said. “Good financial management is one important skill that children need

to grasp and demonstrate in order to become fiscally responsible adults. Showing your children what it looks like to save and invest in their future could have a positive impact on them and future generations.” To get into the habit of saving, Burton said it’s important to set SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Timely. Once you’ve identified your goals, keep track of them in a spreadsheet, notebook or worksheet and make sure you check on them periodically to stay on target. When you’ve accomplished important goals like creating an emergency fund or tackling debt, you can focus on other goals to include investing or saving for a major purchase like a car or house. Striving toward your financial goals doesn’t have to be all hard work, you can always indulge in small rewards for completing your objectives, Burton said. “Don’t just save and invest, make it fun and rewarding. Once you reach your goal – big or small – treat yourself,” she said. “It’s easier to stay on track when you know you are accountable to someone. So tell your family and friends what

you are trying to do and encourage them to save and invest as well. Make Military Saves Week last all year long.” USAG RP Command Sgt. Maj. Brett Waterhouse echoed Burton’s sentiments and urged all service members to use this week to get on the right track financially. “Feb. 21 through March 2 is Military Saves Week. Military Saves Week encourages our service members and families to get into the mindset of saving for the future while reducing their debt,” he said. “I encourage everyone to use this week to assess the status of their savings, establish financial goals and create a plan to reach those goals. Take the pledge on the Military Saves website at https://militarysaves.org and get started on your path to financial stability today.” Take advantage of the Military Saves events in the Kaiserslautern Military Community: • Feb. 21 – College Financial Aid Basics from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., in the Multipurpose Hall at Ramstein Middle School, Bldg. 994, Ramstein Air Base. • Feb. 22 – Military Saves Financial

Garrison town hall addresses quality of life issues by Mary Ann Davis Installation Management Command Public Affairs Safety, housing and availability of resources at Sembach were a few of the topics discussed during the U.S. Army Garrison Rheinland-Pfalz Town Hall at Armstrong’s Club on Vogelweh Housing, Feb. 19. Col. Jason T. Edwards, USAG RP commander, hosted the town hall to find out what is important to community members and to see where improvements can be made. To do this, a survey was conducted a week prior to the event to rate customer satisfaction in the areas of Public Works, Emergency Services, Department of Defense Education Activity schools and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation services. The assessment provided garrison leadership with a data-driven gauge of what topics were foremost in the minds of military community residents. Subject matter experts from several organizations were on hand to help answer questions, provide explanations and offer background on specific topics identified by the survey. In addition, the Army’s Senior Responsible Officer for the Kaiserslautern Military Community, Maj. Gen. Steve Shapiro, commander of 21st Theater Sustainment Command, kicked off the town hall with an overview of housing and barracks concerns across the Army and how those issues relate to Soldiers and Families in Europe. “The intent of this town hall is to find out if there are any issues or problems within the community,” Edwards said to several hundred community members at the club for the event. “We want to identify what we need, what we should change and what’s not being met. We’re also here this evening to provide our community with up-to-date information on what is happening within the garrison based on your inputs to last week’s survey regarding the services we provide.” Safety was a major priority for the community, and the garrison received high marks for on-post safety, military police patrols on installations, emergency data awareness and the use of social media to deliver emergency and weather-related messages. Another area of concern within the military community was the lack of housing during the summer relocation season and finding homes within the Joint Travel Regulation’s authorized window for temporary

lodging for military families. Finding a house during peak season is tough, said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Kathryn Kilker, 86th Civil Engineer Group commander, who explained the house-hunting process at the event. Newcomers must check in with the housing office and view at least two homes during the initial 10-day window, Kilker explained. Service members can request more time. During the second and third 10-day windows, they must look at five homes per time frame. Once the amount of time extends beyond 30 days, Soldiers must request an extension to U.S. Army in Europe. “One way to help when you are putting in your Temporary Housing Allowance extension requests is to show that you are aggressively looking at houses within your entitlement,” she said. “People can also make a short-term lease agreement with a TLA, if they are available, and they are accepting the OHA (Overseas Housing Allowance) rate. That is a really great opportunity for people to extend their time, while using your OHA on [a TLA] while you look for your actual permanent location.” A lack of a commissary, amenities and activities at Sembach Kaserne

were additional topics of concern voiced at the town hall. “I was in the former commissary last week. As it stands right now, there was a business model that was completed a couple of years ago about financially sustaining a commissary (at Sembach),” Edwards said, explaining that with two other large commissaries within the KMC the Defense Commissary Agency made a business decision to shutter the Sembach facility. “What was brought up during our first Community Leadership Council was to generate a ‘Grab and Go’ for fruit and vegetables, milk and those types of things. During the week, have the basics available and ramp up on the weekend to get your full load of groceries. The point is to have some place where you can buy [groceries] to sustain you.” The commander also said he’s looking at several options with various agencies to create more activities and provide additional food options for those living and working on Sembach. “We have to find ways to meet the needs of our Sembach single Soldiers and families that are financially sustainable and provide a service,” Edwards said. While garrison library and post

office hours received high marks, fitness centers received requests for 24-hour access and also showed a need for improvement. “What we are doing is taking the functional fitness area on Rhine Ordnance Barracks and moving all the fitness center equipment in there and putting in a basketball court. Then you will have a place where you can have family fitness in what is now the current gym,” the commander said. “The paperwork has been submitted to make that move, but we have to see how long it will take to accomplish that.” Edwards also mentioned the garrison is exploring options to implement 24-hour access at Army fitness centers using card readers but that “there is an [Information Technology] requirement that we have to get approved.” “I appreciate everyone attending today. I’m happy about the feedback we received, and I know we have a lot of work to do to make our garrison a better place to live and work,” the commander concluded. USAG RP will address Baumholder Military Community concerns at a town hall at the Wagon Wheel Theater on Smith Barracks, Feb. 26.

by Nancy Hoehn, Kaiserslautern High School and Anna Sansone, Vicenza Middle School DoDEA Science Teachers As long as humans have been able to see the aurora borealis, or Northern Lights, it has been an inspiration. Unfortunately, the powerful stream of solar plasma that causes the aurora, can also cause damage to our modern satellites, technology and power infrastructure. The European Space Agency and Norwegian Space Centre will host a three-day social space event in Tromso, Norway, in March to experience and understand the aurora and Arctic wildlife with 30 participants from around the world. Two Department of Defense Education Activity Teachers, Nancy Hoehn and Anna Sansone, will participate as #AuroraHunters to explore, understand and share information on the aurora and Arctic wildlife. Nancy Hoehn is a science teacher from Kaiserslautern High School, and a NASA Solar System Ambassador Master Teacher. Anna Sansone is a science teacher from Vicenza Middle School, and the 2019 DoDEA Teacher of the Year. They are two of the 30 peo-

ple selected world-wide to participate in an eclectic group of space, weather, communication and education specialists. During the event, they will study space weather, including solar flares, coronal mass ejections and solar wind, and how it impacts us on Earth, from the beautiful aurora, to the dangerous impact on modern society. They will learn how satellites can monitor the sun to provide data to forecasters, who prepare forecasts of severe solar events for governments, companies and organizations with time to protect our astronauts in space and infrastructure on the ground. After the event, they will share information on the phenomenon with their students, communities and education networks, through student projects, special events and professional development. They will also share their #AuroraHunters journey at https://openexplorer. nationalgeographic.com/expedition/ aurorahunters. Women celebrate Fasching, attack men Thursday Editor’s Note: This article was published in a previous edition of the Kaiserslautern American and the information has been updated to reflect this year’s event. Thursday will be one of the main Fasching days. It’s “Altweiberfasching,” which literally translated means “old women’s Fasching.” It’s a day specifically reserved for females. It’s the day when men have to beware of women. Altweiberfasching is always celebrated the Thursday before Rose Monday. Traditionally, females dress as old women or witches. They meet in the morning, walk down the streets, sing songs and in some towns they storm the town halls. They constantly look for victims — men wearing ties. As soon as they see a man with a tie — on the street, in a store, in an office — they get

out a pair of scissors and “attack” the man, which means they cut his tie. Depending on the area in which the tie cutting is performed, the woman might ask the man to either buy her a drink or lose the tie, or she cuts the tie and kisses the man. Women are allowed to act crazy that day and have fun without their “better halves.”

The tradition of women participating in Fasching goes back to the 15th century. During sermons, priests were complaining about the exchange of clothes between women and men. In 1558, the city council of Ueberlingen at Lake Constance was forced to prohibit women’s Fasching celebrations in female taverns and dormitories, because of women’s indecent behavior. But the women referred to their female rights such as drinking and dancing during specific Fasching days.

Altweiberfasching also marks the status of women in the 15th and 16th century. Wives had well-defined rights, since they were the budget keepers. During the crazy season they sat in judgment of other women who didn’t clean the house or didn’t take care of the children. Later, in several towns in Southern Germany, it became customary to sit in judgment of men. Women usually met in the conference rooms of town halls. That’s why nowadays women still “storm” the town halls on Altweiberfasching to take over control and become fully liberated as on no other day. In Cologne, which is one of the main locations to celebrate Altweiberfasching and street carnival, women started protesting against the male government in the 1880s. The three most important persons of Fasching in Cologne — the prince, the peasant and the virgin, who actually is a man dressed like a woman — officially open Cologne’s street carnival. During the opening session, the

lord mayor calls out the official carnival shout “Koelle Alaaf.” Now it’s up to the women to start their hunt. In Ramstein-Miesenbach, at 11:11 a.m. Thursday, women in disguise will storm the Rathaus (town hall) and capture men. They will take the men outdoors and tie them to the “Narrenbrunnen,” fool’s fountain. Then the “Altweiber” will cut the men’s ties and for the fee of at least €1.11, captives will be set free again. Traditionally women who cut ties that day hang them up as trophies. And men don’t always notice the attack on time, because it’s not necessarily just women in disguise who do it, but also normally dressed females at work. Kill-joys won’t wear a tie that day or choose to wear an old one they don’t need any longer. Ramstein-Miesenbach’s culture center, Haus des Bürgers, will host an Altweiber Fasching party with a men’s ballet and the band Habachtaler starting at 8:11 p.m. Tickets cost €10 at the door. Niederkirchen’s Westpfalzhalle is well-known in the region for its annual Altweiberfasching party. This year’s theme will be Star Wars. Doors will open at 7 p.m. Tickets cost €15 at the door. Advance tickets for €14 are available at the Metzgerei Hess in Niederkirchen and Otterberg. The Kaiserslautern Carnival Club, KVK, will start its event at 7:11 p.m. in a tent and at its club house, An der Kalause in Kaiserslautern (next to Gartenschau office). Dansenberg will hold their Fasching party March 2 from 8:11 p.m. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the door. KAISERSLAUTERN

Continued from front page of Properties section tals,” Michael Voigtlaender, overseas coverage of financial and real estate markets at the Cologne Institute for Economic Research. “We have a stable mortgage market with steady equity ratios, and fairly moderate levels of home construction.” In the states, “flipping” has been commonplace for a long time (although a bit less popular after the bubble burst). However in Germany, owners keep their properties for longer periods of time than Americans and in many cases, forever! There is also a heavy property-speculation tax levied

in Germany for “flipping” a property. The German government also introduced a law to give BaFin, the financial regulator, the power to force banks to introduce stricter lending policies to dampen the market should a severe correction be on the rise. “There is currently no real estate bubble in Germany that acutely endangers financial stability,” said Bundesbank board member Andreas Dombret. “But the traffic lights are flashing yellow.” There are signs the property boom has finished its cycle. In Stuttgart and Frankfurt, rents have stopped increasing, which means prices may do the same.

English calendar of events 2019 now available The printed version of the 2019 English calendar of events for the Ramstein and Kaiserslautern area is now available at the “Window to Rheinland-Pfalz” information counter at the KMCC on Ramstein Air Base and at the Ramstein Town Hall. Since 2011, 10,000 copies of the booklet are published each year by the “Window to Rheinland-Pfalz” as a joint venture with several neighboring communities. The event calendar is a popular source of information for American military members and their families to find out what is going on throughout the year in the local area. It is distributed free of charge. On 28 pages the booklet lists more than 115 local events accompanied by a variety of pictures. The calendar provides a monthly overview of city and village festivals, fairs, markets, concerts and shows including short descriptions of the events in English. It depicts a choice of offers that the local tourism representatives consider particularly interesting for English-speaking visitors. The calendar covers the most important events in the Ramstein and Kaiserslautern area, the union community of Landstuhl and Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, the holiday region Lake Ohmbach/Glantal and the Donnersberg region throughout the year 2019. A map of the area was included to help locate the venues. The dates of bike event days, volksmarches and culinary hikes as well as

medieval markets or Christmas markets are listed. People interested in cultural events will find something to awaken their interest, so do sports enthusiasts or families with children. A download version of the calendar is available on the website www.ramstein-gateway.com. By clicking the tab “Events” you will find

updated information of what is going on in the region within the next days as well as an overview list of the local events throughout the year 2019. Google Maps was embedded in the layout to make it easier for you to find your way to the event locations. You will find icons to share the information on Facebook, Twitter and

Google+. You also have the option to export the event dates that sound interesting to you to your personal calendar. The “Window to Rheinland-Pfalz” team will be happy to assist you with information about the local area and to provide you your personal copy of the calendar of events. Just stop by at the counter during your next visit at the KMCC. The information counter is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays.

THE GREATEST BRITAIN ROAD TRIP, PART 3: WALES

Wales is one of those countries that people tend to forget exists, which is a real shame. I admit, before my first trip there a few years back, I had no clue where it was, what it was and that it boasted such stunning national parks. But now that I am the wiser, I did not want you to miss out on this underrated little country west of England. From cozy cities to sandy beaches, mountains ranges, lakes and the smallest house in Great Britain- Wales has got it all. Unfortunately the language looks as if someone sat on a keyboard and just went with it but every street sign and landmark is available in English as well. Fun fact: as you drive further into the country, you will notice that the signs switch from English first to Welsh first and you will be more likely to hear someone speak it in every day situations. Its comparatively small size is perfect for a one to two week round trip. Find some must-sees below, sorted by location headed north. Photo by Lukassek / Shutterstock.com

Barry’s Island Start your round trip with a relaxing day by the beach on Barry’s Island. There you will find the best fries, ‘chips’, in Wales, an arcade, a plain old beach with blue water and low cliffs to dive in from. On gloomy days, it has an eerie atmosphere to it but we later found out that a serial killer insisted his ashes were spread there so maybe that’s responsible for it.

trip if you park at Pen-y-Pass Car Park, right in front the youth hostel. Parking isn’t cheap though and it’s often full early in the day but parking in Llanberis and taking a bus up the hill is an option as well. If you don’t want to walk, you can also take a train all the way up. Llanberis

Brecon Beacons

Brecon Beacons is a hiker’s paradise but can also be discovered via houseboat (a dream of mine I have yet to cross off my bucket list) or mountain bike. The Central Beacons is the highest mountain range in Southern Great Britain and the entire parks spans 520 miles altogether- that’s a lot of space to (quite literally) dive into nature. The park offers walks and hikes for all levels of ability with beautiful and diverse sceneries from old red sandstone to carboniferous limestone, wooded gorges, caves and waterfalls. The meadows in the lowlands are juicy green and specked with happy sheep. Check out their website for info on hiking routes and more. Don’t forget to visit Brecon, a thriving market town that has fantastic brownies, an art gallery, romantic canals, a little castle and a large Morrisons (supermarket) to get you prepped for the hikes ahead.

Llanberis is at the foot of Snowdon, merely a 12-minute drive from the Snowdon parking lot. A little train takes you on a round trip along one side of the stunning lake. On the way back, you can get off one stop early and visit the free Slate Mining Museum featuring replicas of miners’ houses, coal mines, a blacksmith workshop and much more to give an insight into the miners’ daily lives. Llandudno

Snowdonia

Snowdonia National Park in the north of Wales is famous for being one of Britain’s ‘breathing spaces’. 9 mountain ranges, some peaking at more than 3,000 ft., cover half the park and attract approximately 6 million visitors every year. The landscape varies between lakes, mountains, waterfalls, valleys and so much more. Just like Brecon Beacons, it’s the perfect spot for hiking, cycling and other nature activities helping you rewind far away from the troubles of daily life. Hiking Mount Snowdon is a circa 4-hour round

Llandudno in the north is the perfect seaside town and one of the largest in the country. It offers offers excellent opportunities to go shopping, stroll along the beach, eat fresh mini donuts at the California-esque pier or explore some more nature. A cable car or walk takes you up a little mountain past a ski resort (yes, there is actual winter skiing here!) offering spectacular views over the coast and its cliffs.

Page 25

Conwy Conwy is a cozy little World Heritage town on the north coast only 15 minutes from Llandudno. While there might not be enough to do for a week’s stay, it’s certainly worth driving through, if only to visit the smallest house in Great Britain, which looks normal-sized without any humans to compare it to but trust me, it’s tiny. Conwy also has palm trees and a patisserie I sometimes consider driving back for. Yes, driving to Wales just for a pastry and then back home for work the next morning. I haven’t done it yet but the raspberry cheesecake would be worth it. A string of wellpreserved walls wrap themselves around narrow streets stuffed with historic buildings and a brooding medieval castle. Visit llandudno’s official site for more info on the two towns and their histories. Getting There Road tripping the country via public transport is possible as there are buses that even take you up to the base of Snowdonia but hiring a car might be the more comfortable option and depending how many people are traveling with you, it will probably not be much more expensive if at all. Where to stay The easiest way to book is via booking.com or airbnb. If you’re looking for budget-friendly accommodations, you should check out the English Youth Hostel Association, YHA. They have hostels all over England and Wales, some hidden away in untouched nature, others right in the city centers. Author’s profile: Leonie is a poetry-loving literature student with a passion for small towns, road trips, and self-timering photos of her back where she acts like she has no idea a photo is being taken even though she just spent 25 minutes leaning her phone against a patch of grass.
