In General Event Data Recorder Data Includes:
5.0 seconds of pre - crash data (vehicle speed, brake, accelerator pedal use, and steering), crash type, recency, and severity (impact direction, g - forces), number of occupants and seatbelt use, and more.
EDR - SUPPORTED VEHICLES
CAN RECORD RAW DATA
• CRASH EVENT LIST: up to six (6) crash events, including crash event order, severity (Delta- V) and crash pulse time, type of impact/direction (ex. front/rear (longitudinal), side (lateral), and recency (based on mileage, ignition cycles since the event, and/or date/time of collision event)
• PRE - CRASH DATA SETS: (55 to 75 data points per record). Raw data points include vehicle travel speed, brake pedal use (on/off), accelerator pedal use (%), steering (degrees), engine speed (rpm), Anti- lock brake activation, and gear position
• Seatbelt Use
• Airbag Deployment, and Occupancy Status
• Potential injury severity context (minor, moderate, severe)
RECONSTRUCTION- TYPE INCLUDING:
VEHICLE DECELERATION
(g-forces) and braking force level (light braking, emergency braking), steering direction (degrees AND left/right direction), distance to impact (rough estimate)
1ST & 3RD PARTY
Statistical Injury Risk Analysis (Biomechanical)
POTENTIAL FRAUD FLAGS
via pre-crash data analysis and crossreferences for reported circumstances
LIABILITY FLAGS
Ex. driver speed and maneuver, distracted driver, avoidance opportunity
VEHICLE HEALTH DIAGNOSTICS
Engine and Transmission module
DTCs (Diagnostic Trouble Codes),
Emissions Test failure flags, Enhanced Vehicle Diagnostics (DTCs), including code definitions where possible
FREEZE FRAME DATA
or some DTCs if supported by the OEM
DIAGNOSTIC SAFETY CODES
Brakes, Tires, Steering, etc.
DTC
Based Repair and Cost information
RECALL INFORMATION & INSURANCE INSTITUTE
For Highway Safety (IIHS) Safety Flags
VEHICLE MARKET VALUE
Based on recent historical data
VEHICLE SPECIFICATIONS
Such as vehicle weight
VIN HISTORY
(CARFAX-like data), including salvage/junk records
Collision Sciences tool utilized will be compatible with virtually every make and model non-commercial trailer) vehicle since the late 1990s except for Tesla and motorcycles. There will be exceptions due to “chip” issues during the COVID-19 years that altered the vehicle CPUs or if a manufacturer changed design model year. This is rare, and the intake process will determine compatibility before taking any assignment for proper expectations.
Please note that in the USA, the Data Privacy Act of 2015 requires that the owner or Lessee of the vehicle at the time of the accident/event provides consent for access to the EDR. Therefore, the client cannot give blanket authority on behalf of the owner or lessee.
EDR data has been admissible in court since 1996 and requires an expert to testify to its application to the case. Collision Sciences can testify on matters of chain of custody, concerning raw hex data. Collision Sciences also offers free EDR Training course material which includes certification, to help those in preparation for testimony. here
Crash Event Organization Example. Below is an excerpt of how the Collision Sciences report provides the crash data records in an easy- to - read and contextual format:
Here is an excerpt of how the Collision Sciences report provides the pre - crash data table in an easy- to - read and contextual format and includes derived/calculated data, such as steering direction, deceleration and distance to impact.
TOOL INCLUDE?
Once you receive your welcome email from Collision Sciences and download and log in to the Crash Scan application you will need to complete a test pull on your own vehicle to ensure you have connectivity and the ability to extract EDR data.
When you are connected to the vehicle you will select the scan vehicle then the dropdown for a test pull . In the field you will have to select Advantage Investigations or the client and input the claim number. You must select test for this first pull to avoid Advantage being charged for a report.
Greg Justice will be available for assistance with all test scan and subsequent field issues.
THE CASE IS REVIEWED AT INTAKE TO DETERMINE IF:
If there is no authorization, the investigator will obtain it from the owner of the vehicle.
Case manager will upload the blank and/or completed authorization form for the investigator into SmartTrak. This may also include obtaining the EDR authorization.
The vehicle needs to be set to Run or Engine Running. VIN, Odometer, and Four Corners.
