Codeine Upscheduling 1 February 2018

From 1 February 2018, codeine-containing products will no longer be available as an over-the-counter medicines in pharmacies. They will be upscheduled to a prescription only medicine in Australia.

This upscheduling affects common products such as pain killers and cold & flu medications, such as: l l l l l l

Panadeine®, Panadeine Extra®, Mersyndol® Nurofen Plus®, Panafen Plus® Aspalgin®, Codis®, Dispirin Forte® Codral Original Cold & Flu® Demazin Day & Night Cold & Flu® Equivalent generic products

The government’s decision for this upscheduling was taken as there are safer and more effective options available for most patients. Codeine has been associated with harmful effects, and its combination with other ingredients in various common overthe-counter products particularly if used for longer periods of time, can lead to serious long-term damage.

You should feel confident that your health professional is there to support you in managing your symptoms. Pharmacists can provide advice and may recommend an alternative treatment available overthe-counter, or to seek medical advice if required. So talk to your pharmacist about the options available.

Common School Ailments School age children may still be at that stage where they are building up their immune systems, thus can be prone to many illnesses.

Bacteria and viruses can cause very distinct infections in children, however viral infections can often lead to secondary bacterial infections as the immune system is weakened from fighting the initial infection.

Here are our pharmacist’s top tips for identifying worsening symptoms which require immediate action to seek medical advice: l

Monitor the child’s temperature, especially for a fever that lasts more than 48 hours or a fever that reaches over 39 degrees Celcius at any one time;

l Severe vomiting and/or diarrhoea that continues for over 24 hours; l Sudden appearance of a rash that spread quickly; l Excessive sleepiness; and l Difficulty breathing or constant wheezing.

Head Lice One of the most common things parents have to deal with when it’s back to school time, is head lice infestations.

Head lice are small insects that breed and feed on the human scalp. They can be passed on from person to person via direct contact.

Here are the steps on how to effectively find head lice: Apply hair conditioner onto dry hair;

Comb sections of the hair with a fine-tooth

comb;

After combing a section, wipe the conditioner

from the comb onto a paper towel;

Look to see if are lice and eggs on the paper

towel or on the comb;

Repeat steps 2-4 until all sections of the hair

has been covered.

If lice or eggs are found, the person should be treated. Products to treat head lice are available at the pharmacy.
