A Son’s gift for a Mother’s Legacy The Dr. Rosalina M. Calairo Distinguished Professorial Chair in Sociology promote the value of professionalism, intellectual scholarship and community service as exemplified by the life of the honoree. Likewise, the purpose of the Chair is to advance research on urbanization, migration, gender relations, community development, particularly rural development, elderly studies, race and ethnic relations and other areas in which the honoree was actively involved with during her service to UPLB and the Philippine Rural Reconstruction Movement.

“My son forsake not your mother’s teaching” (derived from the Ten Commandments). It started out as a proposal that was rejected many times over by the mother until the persistent son finally prevailed. Dr. Rosalina M. Franco-Calairo was a professor of sociology at the Department of SocialSciences of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of the Philippines in Los Banos. Dr. Calairo was often referred to as one of the pillars of the department during her tenure as she was not just a sociologist but was also a historian. She deeply influenced
her son who also pursued the path of being a social scientist. As a fitting gift of a mother’s love for her son and her discipline, the son, DLSU-D Assistant Vice Chancellor for Research Dr. Emmanuel Franco Calairo, honored her with the establishment of a Professorial Chair that bears her name. Thus, the Dr. Rosalina M. Franco-Calairo Distinguished Professorial Chair in Sociology was established in ceremonies held on Nov. 6, 2019
at the Centennial Hall of DLSUDasmarinas. The Chair was established to
Present during the program were family and friends and former colleagues of Dr. Calairo as well as administrators and staff of DLSU-D. They recalled special moments and anecdotal encounters with Dr. Calairo. She thanked those present for sharing the occasion with her. A sculpture created by the Castrillo studio was also unveiled as a symbol of the Professorial Chair. It was made by the cousins Nixxio and Cameron Castrillo and is a gift to the University. The sculpture will be in the possession of the faculty holder and shall be passed on to subsequent holders. The first faculty holder is Dr. Ma. Victoria Aguilar of the Social Sciences Department of the College of Liberal Arts and Communication.
