Hazard of the month Winner James Milne – Pinch point T0187 Lathe Congratulations to James Milne – Technician at Eaton Titchfield for winning Hazard of the month for June. Whilst carrying out a PM on the T0187 Harrison Alpha 400 Lathe, James identified that there was a pinch point between the handle of the main machine and the shrouding of the control panel. This meant there was a possibility that the operator could potentially trap their hand under the weight of the guard when bringing it down. James immediately isolated the machine and removed the handle to re-position it to

04

the left hand side of the control panel shrouding. As a result he removed the hazard and created a safer working environment for the operator.

Critical Find Mike Ford - Plug on MORI MT2000 T0287 Whilst carrying out a proactive machine walk on the Mori MT T0287 during a Kaizen event, Mike noticed that the earth from an electrical plug had broken away and been left in a mains power socket which was switched on. The mains power was fed from the Mori T0287. Mike isolated the machine and safely removed the pin

from the socket, he then inspected the socket for further damage, of which there was none. As a result of Mike’s actions a potential electrical hazard was safely removed from the area. Well done Mike Ford.

Delight c Calibration Kaizen Eaton Havant Dave Hikin – Calibration Technician, led his first Kaizen event during May within the Calibration Lab at Eaton Havant, it has now been some time since many of the improvements were implemented, we caught up with David to see how he is progressing. “I had only been working with ATS for a few weeks before we had the kaizen event. The Calibration Lab here was very disorganised, every spare cupboard, drawer or work surface had equipment on or in it making it impossible to ascertain if the equipment was in-use, obsolete or even functional at all. All the Calibration

06

Certificates were in a filing cabinet but not in any order so tracking down a particular one could be very time consuming. The kaizen event not only cleared all this up, giving me a clean organised area to work in it also taught me more about the Eaton site I’m working in and the standards required. We now have a process that is effective and working well, giving our customer confidence in the service we are providing. On another note the event has given me a level of pride in my work space and made me determined to ensure the standard is maintained and the improvements sustained.”

David Swain – Technician - “The trip was focused mainly on Continuous Improvement, Fuji provided a great insight to how they have developed they’re business over the past 11 years to meet the changing demands in the industry. It has been the positive and continual engagement between management and the shop floor, which has led to the success of the company”

Steven Sale – Senior Technician – “ Fujifilm’s vision is to be number 1 in digital ink supplies and the ‘last man standing’ in analogue ink supplies. Enhance processes Test Rig 4 day Kaizen in Havant It was highlighted from dialogue with our Customer at Eaton Aerospace in Havant and collaborated by our metrics, that Test Rig 8164 was showing high levels of downtime hours compared to the other test rigs within the area. Paul Setterfield – Senior Tech for ATS, led a team of four (Phil Tocknell – Technician, Ross Tolliday – Planner/Scheduler, and two Eaton operators) to investigate the Root Cause of 8164 downtime. The team primarily focussed on the collation of data on how this was entered into our system, they found that incorrect error codes and descriptions were being used, therefore giving a false representation when the data was analysed. 10

The team quickly rectified this and by doing so were able to target the correct sources of the issues being found, this also led to significant difference in the perceived reliability of this asset when the data was re-run.

Thermal analysis was also carried out on the Rig, in which three areas for concern were addressed, preventing further significant downtime. The event also included improvements to PM schedules, calibration schedules, 5S and operator

daily/weekly TPM checks within the area, all with the support of the Eaton Operators. As a result of the teams efforts significant improvements and cost saving were achieved and signed off by the Customer. Well done to all involved.

Driving

inn vation Making Technicians Truly Mobile This month our Eaton Havant site saw the full rollout of Mobility – making technicians mobile. Supported by mobile computing in and around the factory with tablet devices which followed the successful pilot at the site by Paul Setterfield – Senior Tech, and Ross Tolliday – Planner Scheduler. The Mobility innovation integrates our SAP business process with IPAD devices to run as a mobile App, allowing technicans to become more proactive and responsive to the demands of the factory. Mobile computing has its challenges in every form it takes, while it enables new opportunities to service our customer better it also takes an investment into ensuring the business applications are also optimised for use. 12

The initiative has seen ATS work in partnership with SAP to develop mobile processing for work order assignments. The results are visible when you see a technican being presented with an updated priority work order while out on the factory floor.

ATS have also implemented MobileDevice-Management (MDM) technology on each device which allows our IT management of the assets to become lean. We enable Lean IT by building a profile for the users on the devices, this profile standardises the build, configure and setup of the most common features

Furthermore, our MDM technology enables us to keep our users secure by managing the data and access of each device from a centralised policy. This is great when you consider patches, updates and the ability to approve and deploy new applications with a single click. It means our technicians can focus on their jobs with the reassurance the

(email settings, applications and permissions). By doing so we can reduce the time taken to rollout and improve our ROI through making devices availability and uptime greater.

Demonstrate leadership 3 Day event Titchfield Mark West

Mark West (Senvetterfield - Senior Tech Havant, Mike Ford - Site supervisor Titchfield, James Milne - Technician Titchfield, and Darren - Eaton Mori Operator) in the investigation and improvement of a Mori MT machine at Eaton Titchfield:

“The event was part of my 6 Sigma green belt project; it went really well due to having strong team and good support from our customer. Many of the issues on the machines were 5S related. As a team we completed 94.5% of actions and improvements raised, The event highlighted a number of further improvements that could be made on other similar machines, which are now also being addressed. The Kaizen event was a big learning curve made easier with the guidance of our UK CI team. The presentation was delivered to Eaton, and we received good feedback . Now I’m looking forward more upcoming Kaizen event’s”

Billy Whiting 045 Service delivery efficiency 13117 Congratulations to Billy Whiting – IT Services Engineer based out of our Kettering Office on winning Cost Saving of the Month, Billy’s idea centred around service value to our customer. Two service requests were raised by the Ciber Service Desk which required an on-site engineer to attend to two tasks on separate occasions. The first assignment

The other was to setup and ensure the new Store Manager at Old Bond Street was setup correctly, whilst at the same time he was given an overview of how his new Laptop works and to answer any queries he may have had. Under normal circumstances ATS would send a partner engineer in to attend to the matter, instead we sent an internal ATS colleague to attend to the 17
