Choosing the Right Smartphone

Owner, Girl Geek Communications Smartphone technology allows us to have a tiny computer in the palm of our hands! But choosing the right one can be overwhelming. Here are a few things to consider in weighing your options:
1. Cost. Consider not only the cost of the device, but also the cost of service. Devices run from $150-$1200, but many service providers offer monthly payment plans. You don’t need the latest technology and high cost to run basic apps like maps and email.
2. Camera. What’s the difference between a $500 smartphone and a $1200 one? Usually the camera. If you like features like 3D photos and slow motion video, pay for the fancy phone. But a basic smartphone will take very nice pictures without the high cost.
3. Operating system (OS). Just like your computer, Smartphones usually come in one of two types, Mac (iPhone) or Android. The “best” OS is really a personal preference. If you like mac computers or iPads, you’ll probably enjoy an iPhone. Android users enjoy a variety of phone brands that fit their needs.

So you’ve got a great new phone - congrats! Now what? Check out these important tips to maximize the functionality of your new device.
1. Insurance. Phones get dropped, break, or otherwise get damaged. Fixing them can be very expensive. You can buy insurance through your cell phone provider or through insurance sources such as SquareTrade.
2. Cloud Backup. Your contacts, photos, and files are important. Keep them backed up automatically via WiFi with cloud backup services. Some cell providers offer this service, but you can also use other sources. Amazon Prime, for example, offers members free photo backup by downloading the Prime Photos app and connecting your phone to your Amazon Prime account.
3. Antivirus software. Since a phone is just a tiny, pocket-sized computer, you should install security software on your phone, just like you do for your computer. McAfee, Norton, and other companies offer security software that you can use on computers, laptops, tablets, and smartphones. In some cases, they provide cloud backup or identity theft software with your subscription too.
