WELCOME TO THE 2018-2019 SEASON WITH THE ADRIAN SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA. Welcome to the 2018-2019 Adrian Symphony Orchestra season! This season is sure to bring a smile to your faces and a thrill down your spine as we share with you some of the greatest classical music ever written. You’ll be treated to great guest artists including world class singers for “Carmina Burana,” a globe trotting pianist with Andrew Tyson, and perhaps the world’s greatest Dulcimer Player with Stephen Seifert on not one, but two concertos that flank our orchestra season.

We are lucky to have a wonderful, resident, professional orchestra right here in Lenawee County and on the campus of Adrian College. The success of our orchestra and its longevity are a direct result of the great community support that we have enjoyed throughout the decades. I’m convinced that our orchestra is in the beginning of another golden age, being a major part of the fabric of our community, from the College, to the City of Adrian and Tecumseh, to the entire county. This season we’ll be joined by singers from a more than four choruses throughout the year as we connect with a wide range of ages, communities, and musical styles.

As always, our programs will be filled out with surprise pieces that you won’t see listed on the program. As a sneak preview, some of the composers you’ll hear include Tchaikovksy, Respighi, Rachmaninoff, and Ravel, plus lots more. This is a season with big hits, big drama, and big collaborations with musicians from all over Lenawee County and all over the world. Make plans to attend each program for something to wow your senses and touch your spirit.

Music Director Bruce Anthony Kiesling

Active in a wide variety of music, Bruce has a national profile as a conductor and music educator from coast to coast, from classical repertoire at Carnegie Hall to the stage of the Hollywood Bowl conducting with Stevie Wonder and Latin superstars Juanes and Gloria Estefan.

Music Director of the orchestra since 2016, his short tenure so far has been marked by a growing and enthusiastic audience drawn regularly to the symphony by his engaging, relaxed, and slightly irreverent commentary from the stage and the preconcert lectures.

The musicians of the orchestra also enjoy his relaxed but focused rehearsal style that has been producing exciting results heard from the stage during each of the programs.

One of Bruce’s passions is music education, where he regularly works with outstanding youth orchestra programs. For five years, Bruce was the YOLA conductor for the Los Angeles Philharmonic where he led multiple orchestras of different levels including most of the 700 students at YOLA’s three sites. YOLA is Gustavo Dudamel’s signature music education program, which brings free-ofcharge musical opportunities to underserved youth in Los Angeles.

Bruce has conducted at the country’s most storied halls, including the Kennedy Center, Carnegie Hall, the Hollywood Bowl, Walt Disney Concert Hall and SPAC. Bruce has worked with Dmitry Sitkovetsky, Tai Murray, Alexander Paley, Steven Lin, Andrew Tyson, Alexi Kenney, Lindsay Deutsch, Jennifer Check, Anthony Dean Griffey, Gary Hoffman, Darren Criss, Gloria Estefan, Stevie Wonder, Ricky Minor, Grace Potter, Jason Alexander, Lonny Price,

Jodi Benson, Doug LeBrecque, Doc Watson, David Holt, Gospel performers Richard Smallwood and Curt Carr, and his orchestras have accompanied multiple performances with The Airborne Toxic Event, Clay Aiken, Natalie Cole, and Michael Bolton among others. He has prepared orchestras for performances with Simon Rattle, Marin Alsop, Gustavo Dudamel, Thomas Wilkins, and David Robertson. Recently, Bruce created several original orchestrations to accompany the legendary rock band “Journey” for their performance at the Hollywood Bowl.

Bruce is also the Music Director of the Sequoia Symphony Orchestra in California and Artistic Director and Conductor of the School of Orchestral Studies at the NY Summer School of the Arts. Previously, he spent 8 years as resident conductor of the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra in North Carolina before relocating to California. Following that, Bruce was the Assistant Conductor of the Pasadena Symphony and Pops and Music Director of the Pasadena Youth Symphony.

Bruce is active in higher education where he served for three years on the faculty of the Longy School of Music of Bard College: MAT program (Master of Arts in Teaching). Currently, Bruce conducts the Orchestra and Opera at the University of California Santa Cruz.

Then there’s also his addiction to film music, which finds its way on to many of his concert programs, including full performances of the films “Psycho” and “Casablanca.” And also there is his whole musical theater phase where he served as musical director for dozens of productions including the original production of Darren Criss (of TV’s “Glee”) “A Very Potter Sequel,” which became a top ten hit on iTunes. He also musical directed the five-time Emmy winner “The News in Revue,” and “They’re Playing Our Song” at Reprise Theater starring Jason Alexander.

Bruce holds graduate degrees from the University of Michigan, The University of Miami, and The University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Recent guest conducting appearances include The Pacific Symphony, The Long Beach Symphony, San Luis Obispo Symphony, the Fresno Philharmonic, the Owensboro Symphony, the Greensboro Symphony, the San Bernardino Symphony Orchestra, and the Young Artists Orchestra at Tanglewood. The current 2018-2019 season includes performances with the Toledo Symphony, the Lakeside Symphony, the Western Piedmont Symphony, and a return performance with the Young Artists Orchestra at Tanglewood.

In spite of his intrepid schedule, Bruce somehow finds time to vacation a bit. Most recently, Bruce learned that downhill skiing really is like riding a bike (in the sense that after you haven’t ridden a bike in five years you might fall a couple of times before you remember how it’s done). Although based in Los Angeles, he also loves New York City´s cultural scene, both in classical music and theater. A diagnosed cinephile, he’s grateful that LA has such a lively theater, music, and film scene to enjoy, where Bruce makes too-often appearances at the Arclight Theater in Hollywood, easily the world’s greatest movie theater.

Adrian Symphony Orchestra History, Staff and Board of Directors About the Adrian Symphony Orchestra The Adrian Symphony Orchestra was founded in 1981 with the mission to create musical performances of the highest quality and to present activities that educate, enhance, and improve the quality of life for the citizens of Lenawee County and Southeast Michigan.

Now in its 38th season, the ASO is committed to providing excellent Music for Everyone through diverse seasons of classical, pops, and school-day educational concerts. Our goal is to create remarkable live concert experiences now and for many years to come.

Finest Musicians The ASO attracts the finest musicians from the world’s stage to produce performances of the high quality normally experienced in a larger city. Members of the orchestra are professional musicians active in Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. These musicians have trained at prestigious music schools including Juilliard, Eastman, Yale, and the University of Michigan and they perform with other professional orchestras, ballets, and opera companies.

Many teach music in the region, in private studios, colleges, universities, and public schools.

The orchestra regularly collaborates with extraordinary soloists, including prize winners of the Naumburg, Leeds, and Tchaikvovsky competitions. ASO guest artists have appeared with internationallyknown orchestras in venues ranging from New York’s Carnegie Hall and Lincoln Center to Vienna’s Musikverein. Recent ASO soloists have appeared with the New York Philharmonic, Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and the Dresden Staatskapelle, as well as other prestigious orchestras around the world.

Beginning of a New Era The ASO has been served by three previous music directors in its 38 year history: Art Shaw (1981-1986), David Katz (1987-1999), and John Thomas Dodson (2001-2015). The 2015/2016 Season featured four finalists in the ASO’s search for a new music director. In the 2016/2017 season we welcomed our new Music Director Bruce Anthony Kiesling (bio listed on page 4).

Community Supported The ASO serves as the Professional Orchestra-in-Residence at Adrian College and is governed by a community-based volunteer Board of Directors. The ASO would not succeed without support from individuals like you! The ASO is a Michigan non-profit 501(c) (3) corporation and is funded through concert ticket sales, program advertising, sponsorships, foundation and government grants and donations from our loyal patrons.

The Adrian Symphony Orchestra has been bringing music to life since its founding in1981. And, the life of the orchestra itself is contained in the hearts, souls, and talents of the many musicians who devote their time in pursuit of great performances, the kind the ASO audiences have come to expect. Clarinetist and saxophonist Shannon Ford is one such musician.

Ford grew up in Terre Haute, Ind., influenced by her junior high band director.

“He was inspiring,” Ford said. “He always practiced before and after school. From the time I started playing an instrument, I knew I loved music. I’m not sure how one becomes interested in music; you just do it and you like it.”

Ford began her music career in fourth grade playing the organ; she liked the music her grandparents played and decided she wanted to play it as well. Ford began playing saxophone in seventh grade, flute in eighth grade, and clarinet in ninth grade.

Ford’s first time playing with the ASO was in 1997, but was not asked to play regularly with the ASO until 2004.

“People ask me what instrument I prefer or what music I prefer,” Ford said. “My stock answer for these questions is ‘I like to play quality music with quality musicians.’ As long as that is happening, I am happy.”

She has the same problem selecting her favorite composer.

“I don’t have a favorite, however, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky are higher on my list of composers I like,” Ford said.

Some advice Ford has for fellow musicians is to listen constantly to great music. It is not possible to become a great musician unless you are exposed to great music by excellent performers.

Practice a lot, but practice intelligently.

Ford played with the Scott Gwinnell Jazz Orchestra at the Detroit International Jazz Festival in 2009. They closed with a world premiere performance suite, T.H.E. Detroit, composed

“It was a packed house,” Ford said. “We played with the John Clayton quintet and Clayton wrote this piece like a concerto grosso. This is a baroque form of composition, but for a jazz combo with the jazz orchestra being the accompaniment.

“It was an electrifying evening. Once we finished playing, the whole audience exploded out of their seats and cheered and screamed and it was so well received.”

Another career highlight was when Ford went with the Toledo Symphony Orchestra to Carnegie Hall.

Ford would like to encourage Adrian College students to come to the ASO concerts, “the music feeds the mind, soul and heart, and gets them off the grid for a few hours.”

The Planets Gustav Holst (1874-1934)

Gustav Holst was a frail child, both physically and mentally. He inherited a nervous condition from his mother, who died young, and was at various times in his life near nervous collapse. He was extremely nearsighted and could not, even with glasses, see beyond about six yards. As an adult he developed neuritis so severe that he had to give up violin and piano, and was almost unable to write. His musical education was at the Royal College of Music in London, where he concentrated on composition and teaching. His teaching career was long and distinguished, and included a time at Harvard.

In his twenties he became very interested in Indian philosophy and religion and taught himself Sanskrit in order to read original texts. In his thirties he changed his interest to astrology, even casting horoscopes for his friends. He once wrote, “As a rule I only study things that suggest music to me, and recently the character of each planet suggested lots to me.”

Composed between 1914 and 1916, The Planets is a suite of seven movements. Holst said that the work has no connection with the deities of classical mythology. His focus was more on the astrological and psychological association each planet presents.

The Earth is not included, nor is Pluto, which was not discovered until 1930. Holst originally scored The Planets for piano duet, adding an organ for “Neptune.” It was orchestrated later by the composer, whose instrumentation has been considered truly brilliant.

“Mars, the Bringer of War” is characterized by power and menace, using the brass to describe the destruction that war brings. These violent images are then contrasted with those of “Venus, the Bringer of Peace”. The instrumentation calls for harp, woodwinds and strings and suggests serenity throughout.

“Mercury, the Winged Messenger” is the shortest in duration and darts from instrument to instrument in a mercurial scherzo. This is followed by probably the most popular of the movements, “Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity” and is meant to convey benevolence and generosity, and symbolizes fortune and opportunity. “Saturn, the Bringer of Old Age” was reportedly Holst’s favorite and gives a moving description of aging, mortality and death, with all the disappointments and frustrations along the way. His instrumentation includes a tolling bell but resolves into calm and peace. Holst uses brass and timpani to convey a sense of the grotesque in “Uranus, the Magician,” ultimately resolving in a kind of mystical quiet. For “Neptune, the Mystic” the composer gives us fragments of melody and tones, and a chorus of women’s voices which fades away to a silent finale.

Interestingly, Holst did not consider this his best work, and complained for his entire life that its popularity overshadowed his much better compositions. Indeed, this is almost the only one that is consistently performed now.

When first asked if I would be interested in writing a concerto for dulcimer and strings, I happily agreed because the challenge of juxtaposing and blending musical styles and idioms has always been of interest to me. In this case the peculiar beauty and eccentricities of the mountain dulcimer, with its diatonic tuning and drone strings, and the rich heritage of the classical concerto with string orchestra seemed particularly compelling.

Because my knowledge of the particulars of the dulcimer was limited at best, it was arrange that I met with master dulcimerist and intended artist, David Schnaufer. On the second or third meeting with David, he played a lovely song called Blackberry Blossom, one of many handed down in the Appalachian folk tradition. I could hear immediately how the harmonies underneath could be shifted and changed and that it was a perfect melody to adapt to the “classical” tradition I wanted to bring to the concerto. The title reminded me of a book that had a profound influence on me years earlier, and I asked David if he had heard of Margaret Mead’s autobiography, “Blackberry Winter”. His eyes lit up when he told me that NCO conductor Paul Gambill had called to tell him that the grant was secured on a spring morning a few months earlier, when a late frost had come without warning coating all the new buds with a thin coat of ice — a Blackberry Winter. And so the piece was named.

I felt compelled to work within the folk idiom, utilizing folk and folk-like melodies that are true to the nature and heritage of the dulcimer, yet I wanted the piece to have the basic infrastructure of the classical concerto. So I borrowed from a number of idioms: the Baroque tradition of introducing a theme slowly before moving into an allegro tempo (first movement) a rough interpretation of sonata-allegro form (first and third movements), and the time-tested use of theme and variation (second movement).

Stephen Seifert’s teaching and playing have made him a favorite with dulcimer players all over the country since 1991. In that time, he’s been a featured performer at close to a thousand dulcimer festivals and other music events including Kentucky Music Week in Bardstown, KY, Dulcimerville in Black Mountain, NC, the Augusta Heritage Center in Elkins, WV, the John C. Campbell Folk School in Brasstown, NC, the Ozark Folk Center in Mountain View, AR, Stringalong near Milwaukee, WI, the Walnut Valley Festival in Winfield, KS, The Tono American Music Festival, in Tono, Japan, and Halsway Manor near Crowcombe, Somerset, UK. Stephen was dulcimer soloist with the Nashville Chamber Orchestra starting in 1996 and is featured on their Warner Classical recording of Conni Ellisor’s Blackberry Winter, a concerto for mountain dulcimer and string orchestra written with consultation from the great David Schnaufer. The piece continues to be in regular rotation on many classical stations around the U.S. (The

recording album is titled “Conversations in Silence” and can be sampled and purchased on iTunes.)

The world’s foremost concert dulcimer player, Stephen has performed Blackberry Winter with the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra, the Tucson Symphony Orchestra, the Montpelier Chamber Orchestra, and many others. He’s also performed the piece with renowned organist Wilma Jensen who arranged it for organ and dulcimer. His orchestral repertoire also includes a second concerto from Conni Ellisor titled Broad Band of Light, and two concertos from composer Mark Steighner.

Stephen was Adjunct Instructor of Mountain Dulcimer with David Schnaufer at Vanderbilt’s Blair School of Music from 1997 to 2001. He also taught, performed, and recorded with Mr. Schnaufer as a duo throughout the country. Stephen has authored ten books, four CDs, and 16 instructional videos.

Romeo and Juliet Overture-Fantasy Prokofiev, Sergei (1891 - 1953)

The idea for an opera based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet was presented to a very young Tchaikovsky by the Russian Composer Mily Balakirev in the fall of 1860. At that time Tchaikovsky was 29, the same age as Shakespeare when he wrote his play of the same name. Tchaikovsky told his friend, Balakirev, that he was going through a dry period. “I’m completely played out,” he said, “and not one even mildly tolerable musical idea comes into my head. I’m beginning to fear that my muse has flown off to some distant place…” His friend described how he had been composing music for some of Shakespeare’s plays and suggested that Peter try using Romeo and Juliet as a theme.

Tchaikovsky did take his friend’s advice and began work on an overture incorporating a Friar Laurence introductory section, the conflict between the Capulets and the Montagues, and Romeo and Juliet’s love theme. The work was difficult and painstaking for the composer, who wrote and polished and scrutinized his work for several years before arriving at something he could make public. The first draft was completed in 1869, dedicated to Balakirev, and the work premiered in March of 1870 to a less-than-enthusiastic audience. He spent the summer extensively revising his Fantasy Overture, adding a completely new introduction and reworking the score and orchestration. The “new” version premiered in 1872 with more success but Tchaikovsky continued to make alterations until 1880, when the final version was made available to concert audiences. It was his first major masterpiece.

In a letter to his brother in 1881 Tchaikovsky mentions that he has decided to compose a complete opera on that “old, but eternally new subject, Romeo and Juliet.” Fragments of what may have been parts of that work have been found, including a lovers’ duet, but no complete opera has ever been discovered. The fragment for the love duet was completed and orchestrated by Sergey Taneyev, but that is all that survives of Tchaikovsky’s proposed opera.

Tchaikovsky used traditional sonata form for his overture.

A slow introduction describes the matchmaker Friar Laurence, using woodwind chords. A heavy martial theme follows in the allegro giusto section, describing the conflict between the feuding families. Tension builds, and the low woodwinds transition listeners to the lovers’ theme. The development section expands on the violence between the families while Friar Laurence tries to make peace. We then hear a recapitulation of the love theme featuring the horn, and the battle is interrupted and woodwind chords point to the deaths of the two lovers. An insistent drumbeat accompanies the love theme and resolves in the closing bars.

Prokofiev was a successful concert pianist and a prolific composer in a range of genres, including operas, ballets, and even music for motion pictures during the 1930’s. As he grew up an only child in his native Russia, he began writing music, composing steadily from age 4 onward. He was reported to be a rebellious child, whose teachers found him arrogant and unpredictable.

His skills were recognized, however, and he went on to attend the St. Petersburg Conservatory where one of his teachers was Rimsky-Korsakoff.

From the time of political unrest in Russia, around 1918, Prokofiev had been living abroad, primarily in Paris, and writing prolifically. In spite of his absence, his music was becoming more and more popular in his home country. In 1936 he received a commission from the Kirov Ballet to compose an opera based on Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. Prokofiev envisioned his ballet being performed in Leningrad by the Kirov company. The Kirov backed out before he had even completed the work, however, citing the “overwhelming complexity” of the music. He then offered it to the Bolshoi ballet company, based in Moscow. There was a dispute about whether the ending should be tragic, as Shakespeare intended, or happy and uplifting, as the state required. A happy ending was actually written, but an academic outcry resulted and Prokofiev insisted on his original being restored. The Bolshoi refused to perform it, calling the music “impossible to dance to”. Prokofiev returned to Leningrad and to the Leningrad Ballet School, who also declined. He finally left Russia and went to the Brno Opera in Czechoslovakia, where the original Kirov dancers agreed to perform it in 1938, and it premiered in Brno, a full two years after it was completed.

Rehearsals reportedly included “shouting matches with the choreographer and curses from the dancers.”

For performance by orchestra, Prokofiev extracted three suites from the ballet. Montagues and Capulets is the centerpiece of Suite 2 and introduces the feuding between the two powerful families. Its proper title is Dance of the Knights, and it is a ballroom scene, with the music being danced by the knights and ladies of the two families in a slow, dignified fashion. There is a strong, bold pulsating beat from the brass which is picked up by the strings. The atmosphere is menacing and intimidating, reflecting the enmity between the two families, There is, however, a short section of quiet melody as Juliet dances with her betrothed amidst the mayhem.

It has been said that Prokofiev is very good at composing music to portray characters. Think of Peter and the Wolf. Here is another example of that brilliance.

Selections from West Side Story Leonard Bernstein (1918 - 1990)

Rhapsody in Blue George Gershwin (1898 - 1937)

Leonard Bernstein, a native of Boston, had a life-long fascination with New York City. He served as music director and conductor of the New York Philharmonic for many years, and used the city as the setting for several of his own original works. He was introduced to the idea of an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet set in New York by choreographer Jerome Robbins as early as 1949.

His idea was to turn the story of the warring Capulets and Montagues into one about New York Jews and Catholics, and set on the east side of New York. Bernstein liked the idea but could not make time in his busy schedule to really think about it until about six years later. By then the idea had evolved (based partly on national news reports) into a gang feud between white New Yorkers and Puerto Ricans on New York’s west side. He enlisted the aid of a very new Stephen Sondheim to supply the lyrics.

Arthur Laurents put together the story and Robbins did the staging, finally completing the show in 1957. West Side Story came to the stage on Broadway in September of that year and ran for almost 2 years. Its New York run ended in 1960 after 732 performances and 6 Tony awards. In 1961 it was made into a movie and took 10 Oscars, including Best Picture.

When West Side Story was adapted for the big screen the cast included an unknown Richard Breymer as Tony, after Elvis Presley reportedly turned down the role, and Natalie Wood as Maria. Bernstein’s music was so difficult that, although Breymer and Wood could both sing, more adept vocalists were used and their voices dubbed in. Songs like “Maria” and “Cool” are filled with tense, angular meter. “America” has a series of lightening quick syncopations and acrobatic Latin-inspired patterns. There are also romantic and achingly lovely melodies like “Tonight”, “Somewhere” and the wedding hymn “One Hand, One Heart”.

“Something’s Coming” introduces us to Tony, who would rather avoid fighting and simply be with the naively sweet Maria, as she sings “I Feel Pretty”.

The score was orchestrated by Sid Ramin and Irwin Kostal, who said of Bernstein, “If he’d had the time he wouldn’t even need us. When it came to West Side Story every note was his.”

The Rhapsody in Blue was written at one of the busiest points in George Gershwin’s career, at the request of Paul Whiteman, an orchestra leader and major figure on the contemporary jazz scene in the 1920’s. He had heard Gershwin’s music many times – everyone had by that time - and in 1926 was planning a jazz concert in a serious concert auditorium. He had decided to present a panorama of America’s best popular music and was determined that Gershwin should be included as a contributor.

Gershwin considered himself much too busy to undertake a new project, and put Whiteman off by telling him he would think about it. Without really intending to, Gershwin found ideas coming to mind, and while improvising at the piano at a party, he found his fingers outlining the theme of what would become the Rhapsody in Blue. He put it out of his mind, still too absorbed by other projects. One day a brief item appeared in the New York Herald Tribune announcing that Gershwin was composing a Jazz concerto for the up-coming Whiteman concert, scheduled for a few weeks later. His brother Ira showed him the item, and George jumped into the project, composing the first draft of his famous Rhapsody in about three weeks. It was Ira who named it Rhapsody in Blue.

George said, “There had been so much chatter about the limitations of jazz….Jazz, they said, had to be in strict time. It had to cling to dance rhythms. I resolved, if possible, to kill that misconception with one sturdy blow.” He considered jazz a form of American folk music and, rather than actually composing “jazz”, incorporated blues harmonies and syncopated rhythmic patterns into something uniquely and recognizably American.

The Whiteman concert was a long one, and the Rhapsody came almost at the end. Fatigue and boredom had overtaken many listeners. Upon hearing the opening wail of the clarinet, however, the audience was galvanized into attention, then held in the grip of the music until the final coda. The spontaneous ovation lasted several minutes. Gershwin was given credit for the first real invasion of the serious concert hall by an American composer. It has been described as a great tragedy that, while Gershwin’s music lives on, the composer himself did not live longer to play it himself. George Gershwin died of an undiagnosed brain tumor just short of his 39th birthday. His Rhapsody in Blue has reportedly been performed more times than any other contemporary work. It is part of the repertory of every major American orchestra and directed by the foremost conductors of the contemporary world.

Hailed by BBC Radio 3 as “a real poet of the piano,” Andrew Tyson is emerging as a distinctive and important new musical voice.

Recipient of a 2013 Avery Fisher Career Grant, he is Laureate of the 2013 Queen Elisabeth Competition and captured First Prize at the 2015 Géza Anda Competition, where he was also awarded the Mozart and Audience Prizes. He has appeared as soloist with the Moscow Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra conducted by Vladamir Spivakov, National Orchestra of Belgium under Marin Alsop, Orchestra della Svizzera italiana under the baton of Vladimir Ashkenazy, Vienna’s Haydn Philharmonic Orchestra, Kansas City Symphony, Orchestra of St. Luke’s, Louisville Orchestra, Las Vegas Philharmonic, Boise Philharmonic, North Carolina Symphony and Edmonton Symphony.

During the summer of 2018, Andrew Tyson performed as soloist in the Bernstein Symphony No. 2 at the Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan, which was founded by Leonard Bernstein. The 2018-19 season brings performances as soloist with orchestras throughout the U.S., including Beethoven with the North Carolina Symphony, Schumann with the Venice (FL) Symphony, Chopin with the Symphony of Northwest Arkansas, Bernstein with the Berkeley Symphony Orchestra, Gershwin and Ravel with the Adrian (MI) Symphony, Gershwin with the Lakeside Symphony in ANDREW TYSON PHOTO: SOPHIE ZHAI

In recital this season, Mr. Tyson performs in Tokyo, Shanghai, Istanbul, Perth, Sydney and London’s Wigmore Hall, and for the Chopin Foundation of the U.S., Stars of Steinway in Boise, St. Stephens Concert Series in Durham, NC, Chamber Music Raleigh and Arts Council of Moore County, Vancouver Recital Society and Australia’s Musica Viva.

Mr. Tyson has appeared at the Library of Congress, the National Chopin Foundation, Carnegie’s Weill Recital Hall as winner of the prestigious Leo B. Ruiz Memorial Recital Award, Lincoln Center’s Mostly Mozart Festival, Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, New York City’s Morgan Library and Museum, Caramoor Center for Music and the Arts, Miami International Piano Festival, Brevard Music Festival, and on the Gilmore Rising Stars Recital Series. Abroad, he has performed at the Brussels Piano Festival, Beethoven Fest in Bonn, the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, the Filharmonia Narodowa in Poland, the Sintra Festival in Portugal, and the Music Viva Festival in Australia.

As winner of the 2011 Young Concert Artists International Auditions, Mr. Tyson was awarded YCA’s Paul A. Fish Memorial and John Browning Memorial Prizes. In 2013, he gave his New York recital debut in the Young Concert Artists Series at Merkin Concert Hall and in Washington, DC debut at the Kennedy Center’s Terrace Theater. A Laureate at the 2012 Leeds International Piano Competition, Andrew Tyson won the special Terence Judd-Hallé Orchestra Prize, awarded to the pianist chosen by the orchestra and conductor Sir Mark Elder. His initial engagement with the Hallé Orchestra was so acclaimed that it has led to an ongoing relationship and several performances with the orchestra.

Mr. Tyson made his orchestral debut at the age of 15 with the Guilford Symphony as winner of the Eastern Music Festival Competition. After early studies with Dr. Thomas Otten of the University of North Carolina, he attended the Curtis Institute of Music, where he worked with Claude Frank. He later earned his Master’s degree and Artist Diploma at The Juilliard School with Robert McDonald, where he won the Gina Bachauer Piano Competition and received the Arthur Rubinstein Prize in Piano.

Andrew Tyson’s has two solo recordings on the Alpha Classics label: his debut issue comprises the complete Chopin Preludes while his second album, released in 2017, features works by Scriabin and Ravel.
