The African hedgehog is a small nocturnal mammal native to the savannas of central and eastern Africa, measuring between 15 and 25 cm and weighing 250 to 700 g. It is characterized by its back covered in thousands of protective spines and its soft, light-colored underside. It is solitary and shy, often curling into a ball when frightened, although with patience it can become accustomed to human contact. It is omnivorous, feeding mainly on insects and small prey, and displays a curious behavior called self-anointing, in which it spreads foamy saliva onto its spines when detecting new scents.
