Letter from the President
Thank you ... two simple words not said often enough. However, these are the “right words” for all that you have done to support Adrian College and our students. Your contributions of time, talent and treasure keep our foundation strong and allow us to build for the future. We are on a “roll” because of the inspiration and teamwork of the extended campus community. From creative ideas to amazing results, we are enjoying a beautiful campus, a talented and committed faculty, enthusiastic students, and trustees, staff and alumni who share their Bulldog pride well beyond the campus borders. We are experiencing the results of your contributions — through another large incoming freshman class and a very strong retention rate for our upper class students. They like it here, love it here — they are challenged yet comfortable, and in so many different ways find our campus fulfilling their needs and offering new perspectives and discoveries along the way. Several creative ideas resulted from our strategic planning during the last fiscal year — another indication that we have an engaged community dedicated to making Adrian College an even more attractive and progressive place for teaching students. We must continue to increase experiential opportunities, internships, networks and an educational environment that provides excellent preparation for today’s challenging employment environment. We must also continue to help those who need a little more financial assistance along the way to stay here and experience continued success. Last, but certainly not least, we must provide learning environments that support the classroom instruction — and continue raising funds for the renovation and expansion of Peelle and Jones Halls. Your support of this major capital project is an essential piece of reaching our Renaissance II goals. Letter from the Chairman of the Board of Trustees
It is clear that a tradition of excellence continues at Adrian College. This is a tradition of challenging students, enhancing academic offerings, and expanding our commitment to excellence campuswide. Through the leadership and support of each and every one of our friends and donors we continue to achieve great things.
Thanks to the outstanding direction of President Jeffrey Docking, Adrian College has experienced resounding results. His drive and commitment have inspired the trustees, staff, faculty, and students to embrace new initiatives and participate in the incredible renaissance across campus. Under Dr. Docking’s leadership the College has grown in both size and reputation.
Our growing numbers have not hindered the College from maintaining a strong focus and commitment to a personalized approach to education. We have sustained this truly important aspect of a small liberal arts college and continue to impact students’ lives during their undergraduate years.
On behalf of President Docking, the Board of Trustees and the campus community, I thank you for your ongoing support and strong interest in our students and their futures.

Don Kleinsmith
The Don and Louise Kleinsmith Scholarship PURPOSE:
Financial assistance to a Theta Chi fraternity member to honor the dedication of Don and Louise Kleinsmith to the chapter. CONTRIBUTORS:

The Don and Louise Kleinsmith Scholarship was created by the alumni of the Theta Chi Fraternity in honor of Don’s dedication and service as the fraternity advisor for nearly 20 years. The gift also acknowledges support from Don’s wife, Louise, and her renowned cookies that she would supply the members. “When [he] announced his retirement as advisor, we knew that we wanted to do something, not just for [Don], but for Louise too,” said Doug Miller, past chair of the Theta Chi House
Corporation. “We decided to create a scholarship in their honor as a fitting way to recognize their service.” Alex Pistilli, a senior member of Theta Chi Fraternity, has been the proud recipient of this scholarship for the past three years. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to personally know Don and Louise Kleinsmith. I look forward to the day that I can give back and help a student, as this scholarship has helped me over the past three years.”

The Dr. Mary King Conner Science Scholarship PURPOSE:

The Dr. Mary King Conner Science Scholarship, established in July 2009, provided scholarship assistance to its first student during the 2009-2010 academic year. Its namesake, Dr. Conner, is a 1965 graduate of Adrian College in its chemistry program.
Dr. Conner. “Education is essential for obtaining employment in one’s chosen field and increasing tuition costs makes it more challenging to obtain. I wanted to give back to my alma mater to help future students get their degrees and realize their career ambitions.”
As an undergraduate student, Dr. Conner received scholarship assistance, was employed as a student assistant in the chemistry department, and as a resident advisor for the Office of Residence Life.
The scholarship will continue annually, as long as the student selected continues to display a high academic standard and financial need.
“The greatest decision I made was to get an education. My chemistry degree at Adrian College prepared me for graduate study at Michigan State University, which in turn enabled me to have a rewarding career in a field I enjoyed,” reflects
Dr. Conner and her husband, Bill, have made provisions in their estate plans to further endow this scholarship to provide additional student support. The Conners have expressed their pleasure in seeing the benefits of their contribution first-hand.
Vince Westley 2012 Recipient
Created by an anonymous donor, the ASSIST Fund was provided to aid Adrian College students who are in good academic standing, but are unable to return to Adrian College due to an outstanding balance on their student account. This fund provides financial assistance for the student(s) to return to Adrian College, register
for classes, purchase books, and continue toward degree completion.
The ASSIST Fund
Since its inception, 37 students have received assistance to continue their education. Vince Westley, a senior from Port Huron, Mich., majoring in criminal justice, noted the importance of this fund.
Provides financial aid to students in good academic standing to bridge the gap in funding for students unable to return the following semester.

The James F. and Nancy B. DeRose Memorial Fund PURPOSE:

Established in 1979 by Mr. and Mrs. James F. DeRose, longtime friends of Adrian College, the James F. and Nancy B. DeRose Memorial Fund has provided scholarships to deserving students for over thirty years. Originally named the Vails Gate Methodist Church Student Aid Fund, the DeRose family began their support of this program in the 1960’s. Their connection to the College originated through their friendship with former faculty member Dr. Joseph Perez. Mrs. DeRose passed away in 1988, followed by Mr. DeRose in 2005, however, the scholarship is still supported through gifts from the DeRose daughters. “I still contribute because I believe so strongly in allowing young men and women, who would otherwise not be able to attend a college, an opportunity to have as fulfilling a life as [we] have,” said Jane DeRose Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. DeRose. “The letters I [receive] from some scholarship
recipients are encouraging, as I hear [of] their dreams and successes.” “Both of us graduated from small liberal arts colleges that provided more of an individual, intimate experience than a large university would have provided,” adds Linda DeRose Primavera, daughter of the DeRoses. “Adrian follows that tradition. I want to honor [my parents’] commitment to the scholarship and also honor the memory of their lives.” Other supporters are Daryl ‘77 and Lisa Grunewald Bailey ‘79. Daryl was the first recipient of the DeRose Fund and the Baileys have been longtime supporters since graduation. Expressing his gratitude for the support he received, Daryl said: “I did not have the means to attend college and this scholarship provided an opportunity for me to better myself and attain my degree. I feel grateful for what the DeRose family set up and I want to help other students to have this opportunity too.”
Emily Toupalik 2012 Recipient
Ken Munsch graduated from Adrian College in 1974. A recipient of both the Feeman Scholarship and the Michigan Competitive Scholarship, the financial assistance he received enabled him to attend college. The pursuit of his dream would have been otherwise financially unattainable. Munsch credited AC for both a successful undergraduate degree and the completion of his MBA. Munsch reflects on a verse in Proverbs that reads “Lean not on your own understanding, but trust in the ways of the Lord; in all ways acknowledge him and he will lead your paths.” Both he and his wife have strong belief that the importance of education in developing young people to be contributors in
our society is critical. It is this belief, combined with the acknowledgement that it is through a faith in Christ, that the pursuit of these dreams becomes possible. They believe the journey is not traveled alone, but one in which God provides strength during times of weakness and what makes all things possible.
The Christian Ministry Scholarship Fund
Through this scholarship, the Munsches have decided to provide assistance to students at Adrian College who wish to enter the ministry.
