Scope of work: The UAB Athletics department had been looking to renovate the sports facility buildings across campus to accommodate the new sports program. At Davis Architects worked on this building since the start. The main concept was to change the location of the basketball coaches’ offices from a separate building to where the men’s and women’s basketball teams hold their practice meetings. The challenge was to adapt the new program to the limited existing square footage. But with the client giving us as much freedom as we needed, I was able to compromise between excess space and not enough space to provide a balanced layout for both teams.

Remodel work includes a renovation of the Rock Shop, converting river level interior space to patio opening a viewing window into the river level kitchen, converting street level interior space to patio, creating new interior seating area on street level by closing in floor opening, adding a new bar to street level, modifying third level restrooms, replacing third floor fabric awning with standing seam awning, adding and replacing some storefront at street level and river levels, replacing some awnings at street level and river levels with metal canopies, and lowering tower signage to above canopies at street level.
