The Old Town Mall in Baltimore, Maryland, is a pedestrian shopping mall that was established over 200 years ago. However, throughout the years it has struggled to remain active, and despite the repeated intent to revive the area, it continues to go back to its abandoned state. Hence, the purpose of our project is to redevelop and reinvigorate a place that has been turned off for so long. Mercado is a market that will unite the Baltimore community by creating quality experiences involving neighbors, visitors, and friends, all with the purpose of exploring enjoyable foods from local vendors.
Furthermore, the feeling of bringing nature, and the countryside into the site can be observed not only within the market but also through the parks, seating areas, and community gardens, which naturally enliven the mall.
MERCADO .01
Duration: 10 weeks
-In 1818, the Bel Air Market was built where the Old Town Mall is currently located with the purpose of helping the commerce of the area.
-Even though it once was an active location in the city of Baltimore, it is currently considered a dead zone, with four blocks of empty stores in need of repair.
- One of the main reasons why it became an abandoned location is due to the migration towards suburban areas that took place consequently to the world war.
-In an attempt to revitalize the mall in 1968, the city invested over $1,000,000 in renovations and modern decorations such as a fountain and a clock tower to attract more customers, however, the thrill of the renovation lasted no more than twelve years.
- In the 1980s, the mall went back to its current state of solitariness, with only one shop still running
-Currently, we are trying to redevelop the old town mall by creating new programs, restyling its features, and further engaging the community while still maintaining its essence and respecting its history

Urban Community Farm:
A sustainable approach to produce sourcing that bolsters local communities, and encourages a healthy diet by providing nutrient-dense foods. Aside from that, this practice brings the community together with a shared purpose to work together to grow and maintain the farm.
Flexible seating area :
This space can be used for a numerous variety of activities including seating, picnics, people-watching, engaging in social activities, and reading. During the weekend, Thai chi and yoga classes will be offered within this space, inviting local people to engage in low-impact activities that help ease the mind and improve overall health.
Shaded Area:
The idea of this shaded area is to work as a zone where people can relax, limit sun exposure, and read. During weekdays, there will be bookclub meetings held in this area. The incorporation of trees in the master plan was a key element in the design to reduce air pollution, sequester carbon and enhance biodiversity
Seating Adjacent to Market:
This exterior area serves as a seating space for individuals who purchase food within the market and wish to consume those goods in an exteroir space.

materials:
The wooden shingles of the building are made of reclaimed wood with the purpose of repurposing the wood from older , decaying buildings in the nearby area. The shingles also work as insulation, and help regulate the interior temperature of the building which is especially helpful during Baltimore’s extremely cold winters and hot summers.
A gable roof is increasingly effective for the location due to its sustainable properties. The steep slope allows snow and other debris to slide uncomplicatedly.
Trees absorb CO2 and other air pollutants, help improve air quality, help reduce the urban heat island effect, and provide habitat for wildlife. Hence, the reintroduccion of flora into the site was a crucial way to create a healthy sustainable environment.
Community Gardening
Urban garden boxes and hydroponic structures are incorporated to provide fresh produce to the local community, reducing the environmental effects of food transportation. They also serve as habitat for pollinators, and other wildlife entities. further contributing to the health and resilience of the built environment.

BIOTA
Biota is a wellness center in Kapaa, Hawaii, designed to promote a serene and calming environment that caters to the physical, mental, and spiritual needs of its visitors.
I ts architectural design is inspired by the sea urchin, a spiky marine creature that is found in the coral reefs of Hawaii. Its shape, texture, and configuration evoke a sense of protection, which serves as a source of inspiration for the center.
T he sea urchin serves as a metaphor for the underlying purpose of the center. Biota is designed to be a haven that fosters well-being, enjoyment, and relaxation. This alignment with the sea urchin is found in the juxtaposition of its external and internal features.
Similar to the shielding exterior of the sea urchin, which acts as a protective cover for its tender interior, the center creates a nurturing and secure environment. T he building’s organic design seamlessly integrates with the surrounding environment, gracefully following the contours of the topography. This harmonious flow fosters a deep connection between the structure and nature. Furthermore, in times of adversity such as floodings, the center fulfills an essential role as a refuge for neighboring individuals. It provides a secure haven within its boundaries, ensuring the safety and well-being of those seeking shelter. Biota stands as a pillar of support and protection, extending its care to the community during challenging circumstances.

SITE ANALYSIS
The site model was utilized to study topographical variations, further understand vehicular and pedestrian flow by marking adjacent minor and major roads. Surrounding buildings were also included, and helped illustrate regions with a higher density of buildings and areas where buildings were more spaced apart, creating distinct clusters throughout the island. The building site is located in front of the ocean, surrounded by native flora and fauna, and is at the city’s periphery. The ocean is showcased in blue, and the white plastic represents the adjacent flood zones.

Daffin Park, located in Southeast Savannah was created in 1907 and served as a recreational space for Savannah’s citizens. The extensive park holds about 80 acres full of trees, fields, stadiums, and pathways. However, its underutilized spaces have transformed into dead zones, caused by an unfavourable landscape distribution where the programs are too far away from each other, and there is a lack of vibrance and warmth. Hence, the Puentes project is an updated and forward-looking master plan that wil help revitalize Daffin Park and make it more suitable for the City’s visitors and inhabitants.
This will be achieved by redistributing alternate areas of the park and implementing new programs and structures that will turn the infamous dead zones into active ones. .

SUSTAINABLE STRATEGIES
Ground Mounted Photovoltaics:
Walkable, slip resistant solar panel arrays mounted on the ground of the Daffin Bridge are capable of capti
vating sunlight, and converting it into electricity. This is an ecofriendly material alternative that is durable and reduces costs.
Tree planting:
The reincorporation of a significant amount of trees in Daffin park helps mitigate air pollution, they contribute to cooling of the park, provide shade, provide shelter for different animal species, and support the overall well-being and mental health of human beings
Pond:
The pond is a key factor for storm water management, water runoff is directed toward the pond, later, that water would be used for irrigation in case of drought, and to water the plants of the community crops
