The New Zealand public has taken a very hands-on approach to potential changes to the frequency of warrant of fitness (WoF) inspections says the Motor Trade Association (MTA). The Government’s Vehicle Licensing Reform (VLR) project received more than 4,200 submissions while normal expectations would be for around 250. Part of MTA’s approach to the options put forward regarding changes to WoF frequency was to allow the public to have their say. The MTA’s Hands off the WoF website was created specifically to run throughout the period leading up to the closure of submissions on October 31. During that time it received nearly 48,000 visits. MTA hopes Government will take into account the very high level of interest being shown by the public towards WoF frequency and provide a balanced and effective system that benefits all motorists. Government will now spend the next few weeks considering submissions, with a preferred option being presented to Cabinet for a final decision expected before the end of the year. MTA has asked the Government to have a further round of consultation on the preferred options for the WoF, Certificate of Fitness (CoF), vehicle licensing and transport service licenses. reader reply 0121205a

DTM appointed Nexen Tire distributor Hamilton-based wheel and tyre wholesaler DTM has recently been appointed the New Zealand distributor for the Korean tyre brand, Nexen Tire. DTM says it will carry the full range of Nexen passenger, SUV and four-wheel-drive tyres ranging in sizes from from 13-inch to 20-inch, which will easily cater for the local market demand, especially the many brands of vehicle which have Nexen fitted as original equipment

(OE) specification. Established in Korea in 1942, Nexen Tire has over 60 years of tradition as a respected leader in the tyre industry and is widely acknowledged as Korea’s first tire company. The name Nexen is a combination of two futureoriented words; next and century. This reflects the company’s desire to further improve itself and its product offer globally. Nexen is a competitively

priced, high quality tyre with a surprisingly high consumer brand recognition that fills a void between the low end and other major tyre manufacturers associate brands. The company employs more than 2,000 employees in Korea and exports a full range of tyres to more than 120 countries. Nexen’s Changnyeong factory, the tyre manufacturer’s latest passenger car tyre production plant, officially opened on Tuesday 11 October. It is the first fully automated tyre manufacturing facility in Korea, and produces more than 60,000 tyres daily. Nexen says its sales accounts for more than 20 percent of the Korean domestic market and it is an OE supplier to HyundaiKia Group as well as RenaultSamsung, Ssangyong Motor and GM. Other global manufacturers also fitting Nexen tyres as OE on passenger vehicles and SUVs include: Fiat-Chrysler Group, Volkswagen, Skoda, Renault, GM, Mitsubishi and Suzuki. Most of Nexen’s OE growth will be in markets outside of Korea – the firm’s goal is to be selling 3.5 million OE tyres overseas by 2017. Drewsy Bromell from DTM says that with distribution warehouses based in Auckland, Hamilton and Christchurch, trade customers can expect prompt delivery of Nexen product, primarily on same day or next day courier services. reader reply 0121206

GDC hosts annual training GDC has just completed its second round of Autel MaxiDas scan tool training courses. These were attended by more than 90 customers. This year’s training was a little different than last years, because it was divided into beginners and advanced classes. Industry advocates for better training. Australian Clutch Services says it has long been an advocate of industry guided product training. Whilst Dual Mass Flywheel technology is certainly nothing new, previously the accurate assessment of worn or damaged DMFs has been notably lacking across the clutch industry. Inaccurate evaluation and misinformation regarding DMFs has been a known source of mistrust between the repairer and the consumer, therefore ACS recommends that all DMF equipped vehicles be properly assessed at every clutch replacement – a recommendation that is backed by the respective OE manufacturers of dual mass flywheels. At the most basic level, a DMF is simply a driveline dampener, not dissimilar to the one found in a normal clutch disc. It was developed by OE manufacturers because a dampener located in the flywheel allows for a much wider range of motion than a conventional clutch disc dampener can; therefore NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) suppression can be controlled more accurately

by the driveline development engineers. Because a DMF performs the work previously undertaken solely by the clutch disc, it is a wearing part that should be properly assessed at every gearbox R&R, and replaced as necessary – the ideal time is in conjunction with a new clutch kit. ACS stocks tools for correct assessment and safe fitment of dual mass flywheels and self adjusting clutches (SACs), and it has continued to embrace the latest updates to clutch and flywheel technology by encouraging the widespread use of these tools. DMFs can be assessed quickly while they are still mounted to the engine, using the ’30 + 2’ rule. If the DMF exceeds 30mm of rotational movement, or 2mm of lateral movement (rock on the crank), further checking must be done to determine if the flywheel should be replaced. Many workshops now employ this simple rule of thumb, before resorting to the tool for more accurate assessment if required. The OE manufacturer developed test tools are available for sale to dealers, European vehicle

specialists, and driveline workshops. ACS also stocks a range of single mass flywheel (SMF) conversion kits, developed for specialist and performance applications where it may not always be appropriate to retain a DMF. Australian Clutch Services has specialist technical sales staff on hand to discuss the specific requirements of customer vehicles, to ensure the end user receives the product appropriate to their vehicle and usage.

New technologies to Expo New technologies, product launches and money saving business systems will abound at the 2013 Australian Auto Aftermarket Expo to be in Sydney from April 11 to 13. The Expo is hosted by the Australian Automotive Aftermarket Association (AAAA) and Executive director Stuart Charity said exhibitors are enthusiastically capturing the Expo’s spirit of information sharing and education. “The ‘how to improve your business’ theme will promote a range of new innovations,” he says. Rapid part prototyping

Among the high technology products on display will be Tasman Machinery’s demonstration of the new Stratasys Mojo 3D Print Pack, a fused deposition modeling technology for

direct digital manufacturing and rapid prototyping of products. This technology makes prototypes and products by adding material layer by layer (“printing”) and binding it using heat, chemicals or other processes. A suite of brand new Rotary vehicle service hoists has given the upgraded workshop at John Andrew Ford in Auckland a major boost. Kevin Schreuder, Service Manager for the New Zealand operations of the Automotive Holdings Group that owns John Andrew Ford, says the choice of hoist was important because the new workshop occupies exactly the same footprint as before and the ability to maximise the space was crucial. In selecting the two-post Rotary hoists from Stocks Equipment, John Andrew Ford now has a baseless hoist that provides clear floor space for technicians to work unimpeded, adding to the greater sense of space within the workshop. It also has asymmetrical arms that add even more space, because the vehicle sits further back. A total of 14 two-post Rotary hoists have been installed, along with a 6.3-tonne Revolution 4-post model that will enable technicians to work on Ford Transit vans and motorhomes, which previously had to be serviced and repaired on the workshop floor. The two-post Rotary hoists also come with flip-up adaptors, which the John Andrew Ford technicians had liked on the previous hoists. All have been specially painted in authentic Ford blue colours, together with a number of work benches that Stocks Equipment supplied with custom-made feet. They stand out against the new

grey/cream colour scheme in the workshop. “It’s very spacious now and the technicians love the baseless hoists – they are so easy to work around and a lot safer, too,” says Mr Schreuder. While the decision to fit Rotary hoists was partly influenced by its parent company Automotive Holdings Group as a key supplier to its dealerships in Australia, Mr Schreuder says he wasn’t bound by that and could have selected another brand if it was felt appropriate. The two-post Rotary hoists supplied to John Andrew Ford are the two-post SPOA10S5G5 model, certified to safely lift up to 4.5 tonnes. These hoists feature asymmetrical three-stage front and two-stage rear arm coverage and usually come with standard polymer adaptors that thread up or can have the optional stackable inserts, although in John Andrew Ford’s case they were ordered with optional flip up adaptors. This model comes standard with three-phase (415 Volt) connection, but can be ordered as a single phase model. The Revolution RFP14 hoist also features a twotonne jacking beam and is often used by workshops for alignment, but at John Andrew Ford it is dedicated for use with heavier vehicles and Transit vans. All-wheel-drive motorcycles launched Christini Australia recently launched its AWD 250, 300 and 450 machines, in addition to performance packs and frame kits for a selection of brands. The patented mechanical system delivers power from the motorcycle transmission through a series of chains and shafts. It works in a similar manner to fourwheel AWD vehicles, whereby the system powering the front wheel is driven at a slightly lower rate – approximately 80 percent - than the rear wheel. In optimum traction conditions, the rear wheel will actually drive faster than the front AWD system, with one-way clutches in the front hub allowing the front wheel to freewheel. When traction is lost the AWD activates, transferring power to the front wheel until traction is re-established. Cornering and straight-line stability are dramatically improved, and the AWD system relieves rider fatigue, allowing faster riding, for longer. Jeff Gleeson from Christini Australia says

Ignorance is not an excuse Robert Barry reviews the current situation regarding filler/handler licensing requirements, new equipment coming onto the market, why membership of VASA is a good idea, the need for industrysupported training courses and the worrying spectre of counterfeit refrigerant entering New Zealand undetected.

Licensing and recovery update

According to Ces Moyes from Total Air, in regard to handling synthetic greenhouse gases (SGG) such as R134a refrigerant, in the near future, reputable air conditioning wholesalers will be able to refuse a sale of such refrigerant to any customer who cannot produce a refrigerant license or approved filler certificate to help compliance with the compressed gases regulations of the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act (HSNO) 1996. Ces goes on to say that the Commerce Commission has just recently given the green light to this practice by participating wholesalers on the grounds that it is in the public’s best interest. “If you are recovering any type of refrigerant into a compressed gas cylinder you are required to have an approved filler’s certificate or refrigerant licence,” she says. “Even though at present the recovery of synthetic greenhouse gases such as R134a is not

mandatory, it will become law in the very near future. Amendments to the Climate Change Response Act 2002 will make it an offence for anyone engaged in installing, operating, servicing modifying of disposing of any electrical switchgear, refrigeration or air conditioning or other heat transfer medium to release a SGG without lawful justification or excuse. A fairness test will apply for those people using industry best practice including circumstances where the release could not reasonably have been avoided. Refrigerant recovery is embodied in the Motor Trade Association and VASA (the Australasian body representing members of the automotive air conditioning, and auto electrical industry) codes of conduct. The MTA environmental standards require all MTA members to take all practicable steps to protect the environment and this should be include member workshops recovering SGG refrigerants as a matter of course. Because it will be an offence to wilfully release a SGG, any workshop doing repairs that involve degassing or recharging air conditioning should be aware they need to become compliant with these requirements, even if it means subcontracting. Workshop owners should ask to see the person’s approved filler certificate from an EPA approved test certifier or refrigerant licence from Refrigerant Licensing NZ (RLNZ) to ensure this person meets the skills, qualification and legislative requirements under the legislation. Obtaining a refrigerant licence which includes approved filler’s certification can be organised through RLNZ or, as Ces pointed out to Motor Equipment News, it can be more economical for a group of five more people to arrange for an EPA approved contractor to hold a session on site to obtain their approved fillers certificate. The approved filler test certificate is the legally recognised formal certificate issued with EPA approval. The refrigerant licence is a convenient identification card of a similar size to a NZ driver’s licence which is more convenient to carry when purchasing refrigerant from a reputable wholesaler. RLNZ envisages providing ongoing education about changes in the status of refrigerants and their use

at renewal time. Both the approved filler,s certificate and the refrigerant licence will be accepted for proof of competence and legal compliance by refrigerant wholesalers. Further information can be obtained from the Refrigerant Licence Trust Board website at www.rlnz.org.nz and test certifiers can be located at www.epa.govt.nz. VASA – why you should join

Both Ces and Catherine Tocker from CoolCar Air Conditioning Centre in Hamilton are staunch supporters of VASA and feel that more air conditioning professionals could benefit from membership. “If you want to keep up to date with the latest news and information from around the globe and here in New Zealand, joining VASA is the best way to go,” says Ces. VASA – Automotive air conditioning, electrical and cooling technicians of Australasia, is a notfor-profit association, formed by vehicle air conditioning specialists in 1993 to encourage best practice repair procedures, continuous learning and ethical conduct. It also looks after the interests of aftermarket technicians through representation on key industry regulatory bodies and government liaison in NZ and Australia. When factory-installed air conditioning in new cars took over from aftermarket installation, VASA extended its charter to embrace auto electricians, and eventually radiator repairers. This was partly achieved through the merging of the original VASA body, the Vehicle Air-conditioning Specialists of Australasia and the Australian Association of Automotive Electricians in 2005. VASA membership comprises mainly service workshops and technicians, but also parts wholesalers, equipment manufacturers and educators. “Becoming a VASA member allows you access to current information as well as being able to seek help from other technicians who are members,” says Ces. “A new feature of VASA is the option of being able to receive email updates from its website www.vasa. org.au but for the entire article a member login is often required.” Ces was honoured this year with the VASA Appreciation Award recognising her dedication to

product knowledge and enthusiasm for finding answers to automotive air conditioning parts problems which helped set new standards in the industry. Catherine Tocker, who is the NZ-based director on the VASA board of directors, presented Ces her award at a Total Air information evening in August, as Ces was unable to attend VASA’s Wire & Gas training event in June due to a sudden illness. Ces is a stalwart supporter of VASA events and regularly attends to keep abreast of developments in the industry and to build networks with like-minded people. Ces was disappointed to have missed out on the tour of the ACART Ford Environmental Testing facility in Geelong during Wire & Gas. “Tours of facilities like this are one of the unique opportunities members receive when they belong to VASA,” says Ces. What’s happening with R1234YF?

Daimler and Volkswagen have both publicly stated that they will not be introducing 1234YF refrigerant gas into their OEM air conditioning systems. In a press release that stunned the automotive world in September 2012 Daimler had this to say: Daimler has provided relevant authorities with the findings of an investigation

which raises questions on the safe usage of the new internationallyrecognised R1234Yf refrigerant.” Up to now, it says the climatefriendly chemical was set to be used worldwide in the automotive industry and was previously perceived to be safe. This was determined by numerous laboratory and crash tests carried out by international vehicle manufacturers and independent institutions. Despite multiple confirmations of non-critical results, Daimler carried out a series of additional tests on the new refrigerant as part of a new real-life test scenario developed in-house which goes above and beyond the legally prescribed requirements. In the new real-life test scenario, the refrigerant is dynamically dispersed at high pressure near to hot components of the test vehicle’s exhaust system. This corresponds to a serious head-on collision in which the refrigerant line is severed and the reproducible results demonstrate that refrigerant which is otherwise difficult to ignite under laboratory conditions can indeed prove to be flammable in a hot engine compartment. Similar tests of the current R134A refrigerant did not result in ignition. Due to the new findings of this study and the high safety demands at Mercedes-Benz, this chemical

will not be used in its products. The company therefore wishes to continue to use the proven and safe R134A refrigerant in its vehicles. In a post on R744.com, the CO2 cooling and heating industry platform, Volkswagen head Ferdinand Piech reportedly said: “The right refrigerant is CO2. It does not burn for sure. Until this comes, we will continue using the proven refrigerant R134A.” In response to this news, refrigerant manufacturer Honeywell said it was surprised at the announcement by Daimler. “We were surprised to learn of the in-house testing by MercedesBenz, which was conducted without the benefits of collaboration or openness in the approach, and we are concerned about drawing conclusions about the relevance of the findings without having any understanding of how the tests were conducted and what conditions were represented,” says Honeywell. “Honeywell takes product safety very seriously, and we will

R1234yf has been tested extensively by SAE, the global association of automotive engineers and several independent institutes worldwide, and these tests have all shown that it is safe.” In addition, R1234yf offers a 99.7 percent improvement in global warming potential over the current refrigerant.“ Beware counterfeit refrigerant

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBE) recently produced a hazard management bulletin for the refrigeration industry warning about the danger of counterfeit refrigerant being used in refrigerated shipping containers which are colloquially known as reefers. It says that refrigeration technicians working on reefer units overseas were killed when the units exploded and investigations found that the usual refrigerant R134a was replaced with a fake refrigerant mixture containing R40 (methyl chloride). According to the MBE bulletin the aluminium components in the refrigeration units might have reacted with the R40, potentially forming trimethyl aluminium. This hazardous substance emits white smoke and spontaneously burns upon contact with air. Information obtained so far indicates that the fake refrigerants have originated from China. While R134a is largely unreactive and non-flammable under normal circumstances, it has a similar boiling point to R40, and MBE says this may be the reason why R40 in combination with other refrigerants such as R22 (chlorodifluoromethane, an ozonedepleting substance) is being used as a cheaper alternative. The MBE says that R40 may also be present in imported refrigerant gas cylinders. It is possible to check if a refrigerant contains R40 by using a halide lamp to conduct a flame test. A green flame will reveal the presence of any refrigerant containing chloride. The MBE says that conducting these halide lamp tests is hazardous as a highly toxic gas called phosgene is formed when refrigerants containing chlorine are combusted. Additionally, if the

refrigerant contains hydrocarbons, these are flammable and will ignite if exposed to an ignition source, so these tests should only be conducted by trained personnel. In summary the MBE suggests that purchasers of refrigerant should only obtain product from reliable global suppliers who sell authentic brands, and should be wary of purchasing ‘competitively’ priced R134a from unknown suppliers or over the internet.

Paul commented that Grant Hand has a particularly engaging tutoring style and makes sure that each and every participant leaves the session with a greater understanding and knowledge of automotive air-conditioning. The sessions included fundamentals of automotive air-conditioning, analysis of automotive airconditioning, as well as a session on earthmoving and agricultural air-conditioning systems Paul says the mixture of attendees to the OEX training sessions included a number of apprentices as well as technicians from specialist air-conditioning shops as well as general garages and franchise service centres. “It is in our best interest as suppliers and wholesalers to support ongoing training to our industry customers and we are committed to do so again next year,” says Paul. “We also foresee our biggest growth area in the market will be the servicing agricultural and earthmoving air-conditioning systems, with the amount of road renewal projects and of course the rebuild of Christchurch. So offering training in this area is critical to the success of our customers.”

This means a few models may appear in 2013 then slowly increasing over the next five years. Non-European manufacturers will export 1234Yf models to Europe as their platforms change but these same models may enter the Australasian market with existing R134A systems. This could mean an average Aftermarket workshop won’t see a 1234Yf equipped vehicle until after 2017. Recent safety testing by Mercedes has resulted in further delays for Mercedes and the VW group with CO2 being raised again as an alternative refrigerant according to Robinair. It says that is important to ensure any

1234yf unit purchased by a workshop has the necessary OEM approvals to protect a customer’s vehicle warranty. Before buying any new air-conditioning service equipment it suggests that workshop owners ask for proof of approvals and standards compliance. Robinair says that if New Zealand adopts the overseas 1234Yf Standards (SAE J2843, SAE J2845) then some existing 1234Yf A/C stations being offered may not meet these standards, such as dual gas models. While SPX Robinair has approved R-1234Yf units available it believes this purchase would be premature for an aftermarket workshop to buy a unit before OEM dealers have them. Servicing A/C in hybrid and electric vehicles

Servicing most hybrid or electric vehicles A/C systems requires specialist equipment to avoid cross contaminating POE oil with PAG oil. The majority of hybrid-electric vehicles use a high voltage compressor which requires non-conductive POE oil. To avoid the risk of mixing PAG with

POE in a high voltage A/C system the SAE-J2788 standard was released. This requires A/C service equipment to manage both conventional (PAG) and hybrid/electric (POE) vehicles without cross contamination. The Robinair 34788-1 unit is specifically (dedicated) for servicing the new high voltage electric A/C systems found in the Zero emission fully electric Nissan LEAF. What happens when the oil is cross contaminated? With just one percent of PAG in a POE system it can lower the insulation resistance from over 10 mega ohms to under one mega ohm. If PAG was used to completely fill an electric compressor (POE) system the insulation resistance would be zero. Some additional benefits of a SAE-J2788 compliant unit is its charge accuracy must be a minimum of plus or minus 15 grams. As vehicle A/C systems become smaller this charge accuracy becomes critical. SAE-J2788 compliant units must also recover 95 percent of the refrigerant from

a vehicles A/C system. Many noncompliant A/C units recover 60 to 75 percent. The difference is less gas lost to the atmosphere and more recovered, reducing a workshop’s R134A annual reader reply 0121219 purchases.

What’s lurking in your air conditioning? Drivers largely take air-conditioning for granted, switch it on when required and forget about it when not. Many vehicle manufacturers do not include servicing a car’s air conditioning system in their standard maintenance programme. However, an air conditioning unit that is not cared for properly may present the car owner with several potentially expensive, unexpected and even unpleasant problems. It may make strange noises, leak moisture, not cool the car adequately, give off musty and unpleasant smells, or worse, cause driver fatigue or allergic reactions such as bronchial tube irritation, eye inflammation, runny noses and tender throats. Drivers often experience allergy symptoms due to pollutants or microorganisms – a healthy ventilation system can make all the difference says Wynns. One reason for this is pollutants such as exhaust fumes that enter the car from the outside through the open windows or the ventilation system. Another is the build-up of bacteria,

fungi, germs, mould, and spores on the surface of the air conditioning unit’s evaporator and in the ventilation system, especially if the unit is used only intermittently. The car’s cooling and heating systems generate and retain condensation all year round, and dust and pollen often settle there, offering bugs an ideal breeding ground. If left untreated these microorganisms may also set up home behind the dashboard. Their spores contribute significantly to sick car syndrome, says Wynns. When the car occupant switches on the air conditioning or heater of a car with a compromised ventilation system, these spores are blown into the cabin and inhaled. With due care the car owner can stop this problem in its tracks. Experts such as Wynns recommend running the air conditioner at least five minutes per week to prevent seals drying out, the vehicle should be disinfected and protected against bacterial growth annually, and the air conditioning system should be

Fuel efficiency for heavy vehicles

EECA Business says it looks for the big opportunities in energy efficiency – those that help improve productivity and profitability for firms and that strengthen the wider economy. One of the biggest is improved fuel efficiency in road freight. Transporting nearly everything Kiwis use and consume, road freight is a key link in the supply chain. Most of the 130,000 trucks on New Zealand roads are fueled by diesel. In total, they travel more than 2.5 billion kilometres and use about one billion litres of diesel worth around NZ$1.3 billion every year. After wages, diesel is the most significant cost for road freight operators and price increases are felt keenly in an industry with profit margins as low as one to four percent. When the price of diesel goes up significantly the increase is passed on to consumers and business – including exporters generating valuable foreign earnings. The rising price of diesel is perhaps the biggest challenge facing the road freight industry – the Ministry of Business Innovation and Employment predicts that the pump price for diesel will be more than $2 a litre within the next 10 years. Underpinned by increasing global demand for oil, increases in diesel prices can be mitigated to an extent

through improved fuel efficiency. EECA’s research shows that fuel efficiency could typically reduce fleet fuel bills by 10 percent. This is worth about $130 million every year in direct cost savings across the industry. At a company level a fleet of 25 trucks using a million litres of fuel annually could realistically make savings of $130,000 every year. Because the cost of diesel is such a significant input for fleet operators, a 10 percent fuel saving could typically increase the bottom-line profit of fleets as much as threefold but the benefits don’t end there. A reduction in diesel fuel consumption reduces New Zealand’s reliance on oil imports and increases our energy security. Fuel efficient driving means lower maintenance bills, fewer accidents and a reduction in associated health and safety costs. Saving fuel also reduces the emission of carbon dioxide and pollutants that cause respiratory and other health problems. Despite these many and varied benefits, New Zealand’s heavy vehicle fleet is one of the least fuel efficient in the OECD. This means there is huge potential for improvement but the obvious question is: what is holding our heavy vehicle fleet operators back? Before any significant improvement

in fuel efficiency can be realised, these barriers need to be identified and overcome – and fleet operators can’t do this alone. EECA’s research shows the most significant barriers are a lack of awareness of the benefits of fuel efficiency, and knowledge of how to best go about improving fuel efficiency. This means very few operators take a systematic approach to improving fuel efficiency. EECA’s heavy vehicle fuel efficiency programme aims to change this and bring significant savings to road freight operators. It will deliver fuel savings of at least 15 million litres by 2014 across New Zealand’s heavy vehicle fleet, resulting in around $20 million worth of diesel fuel savings with a 40,000 tonne reduction in carbon emissions. Heavy vehicle performance advisors

trained under the programme are key to achieving these savings. Working directly with fleet operators they will help to put in place tailored fuel efficiency programmes and access financial assistance from EECA. Supporting the advisors is a bestpractice fuel efficiency information resource on the EECA Business website, featuring practical tips and information to help operators ask and answer the tough questions. Raising the profile and business benefits of fuel efficiency with operators will encourage them to make fuel efficiency part of their day-to-day business. New tractor technology from Oerlikon Graziano CVT: a mechanical continuously variable transmission for compact tractors. Improves fuel efficiency by around 10 percent compared with a conventional hydrostatic transmission.

At the recent International Agricultural and Garden Machinery Exhibition in Bologna, Italy,commercial driveline manufacturer Oerlikon Graziano showed its latest advances in driveline technology to make agricultural vehicles more efficient. Among the technologies on display by the company were the latest in off-highway axles and CVT transmissions that support increased productivity and higher efficiency in food cultivation. Oerlikon Graziano displayed a front-steering oscillating axle the first of its type to reach the market. Integrated into a tractor, the axle enables the vehicle to travel at significantly higher road speeds and to increase its payload, making it a more efficient means of transportation. The axle can be combined with a rear steering axle, mounted with double reduction and spiral bevel gear. Developed to support the growing demand for larger, more powerful

tractors, the axle is suitable for tractors up to 450hp. The company also displayed a rigid mounted rear axle incorporating a power take off (PTO) with hydraulic shifting. The PTO is available with 540/1000rpm and 750/1000rpm speed ranges. Both front and rear axles are equipped with outboard disc brakes and differentials with 100 percent hydraulic locking. The range of driveline products on show included the company‘s Torque-Hub final drive units that deliver the torque output and long service life required for agricultural, industrial and off-highway mobile equipment applications. The 7000 series handles a maximum intermittent torque output of 7000Nm (60,000 lb-in) with a reduction ratio from 19:1 to 57:1 and accepts SAE A and B, cartridges, OMSS and OMS motor mounts. It is available with an integrated TorqueLock parking brake and disconnect system. The CT45 Compact Track Drive unit accepts up to 45000Nm (400,000 lb-in) maximum intermittent output torque with a reduction ratio from 63:1 to 136:1 using a triple planetary design. It accepts hydraulic cartridge motor inputs and is available with an integrated TorqueLock parking brake. The C014 units handle up to 14000Nm (123900

name Atlas F24. In return, Nissan will sell the light-duty truck ‘Fuso Canter’ under the new model name NT450 Atlas. Initially, the mutual deliveries scope will total about 1,300 units. The goal of the cooperation between MFTBC and Nissan is to utilise the expertise of both manufacturers with a view to bolstering the business with light-duty trucks in Japan. The present agreement on reciprocal supply of trucks will enable both partners to expand their truck assortment, realise economies of scale and achieve savings in development costs. This will lead to increased efficiency and productivity for both sides. The Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation (MFTBC) based in Kawasaki, Japan, is one of Asia's leading commercial vehicle manufacturers in Asia. Daimler AG holds 89.29 percent of MFTBC shares. The remaining 10.71 percent of the shares are held by various companies of the Mitsubishi Group. A tale of two champions

Bernard Carpinter reports on the retirement of world champions Sebastien Loeb and Casey Stoner. Two world motorsport champions, Sebastien Loeb and Casey Stoner, have retired at the height of their powers. Loeb leaves the world rally championship after winning it for the last nine years in a row, while Stoner quits the MotoGP championship young – just 27 – but with two world titles to his credit. Loeb’s record is quite astonishing. By the end of 2012 he had won 76 world championship rallies; before him, no one had reached 30. And no one had won more than four world titles. Actually he is not being lost to the sport completely just yet, as he plans to contest a few selected events in 2013, but he will no longer be a contender for the world crown. Loeb has also finished second in the Le Mans 24-hour sports car race and has been awarded the Legion d’Honneur, a very high award in France. In his younger days Loeb was a gymnast and a good one, fifth in the French championship.

Perhaps the sense of balance needed to be a top gymnast helps him keep his Citroens on that fine edge between maximum speed and total disaster. The name Loeb is actually a German one – he comes from the eastern French region of Alsace where there is a strong German influence, as the names of the towns and the people show. In fact Alsace has been German at times; the border has tended to change depending on who won the last war. This background might help explain Loeb’s personality. Contrary to the stereotype of the excitable and emotional arm-waving Frenchman, Loeb is calm and collected in his general demeanour and in his driving. He very seldom crashes and he knows just how fast he needs to go in order to win. If victory is not possible for some reason, he drives to finish and collect as many points as possible. Loeb’s start in rallying came rather late and he was 24 when he began competing in the Citroen Saxo one-make series in 1998. The following year he won that title and attracted the attention of

Guy Frequelin, the head of Citroen’s motorsport section. In 2001 Citroen entered Loeb in the inaugural Junior World Rally Championship – and he won it very convincingly, taking five of the six rounds. He also finished a close second in Rally Sanremo, a round of the full World Rally Championship. The next year Citroen entered seven rounds of the WRC, preparing for a full-scale assault the in 2003. Remarkably, Loeb finished first in the Monte Carlo Rally, although he could not keep his victory because he incurred a time penalty for an illegal wheel change. The debut victory was not far away, though, coming in the German round later that year. Those two events are both tarmac rallies and early in his championship career Loeb was regarded as a tarmac specialist. I remember interviewing him the first time he came to New Zealand, in 2003; he was polite and helpful and said he was confident of increasing his speed on gravel with more experience. He didn’t take long

In Loeb’s first full season in the WRC, 2003, he finished second, just one point behind Subaru’s Petter Solberg, scoring three victories and outpacing world champion teammates Carlos Sainz and Colin McRae. His co-driver Daniel Elena has been with him all through his championship career, obviously a good partnership. The first world title came in 2004 and it was hugely convincing as Loeb scored six wins and six second placings – remarkable consistency. He finished 36 points ahead of Solberg, and in those days a win was worth only 10 points so Loeb could have dropped three wins and still taken the championship. He won three gravel rallies and one snow rally, in Sweden. The following year saw unprecedented domination as Loeb won 10 rallies in the Citroen Xsara – including New Zealand, for the first time – and finished a massive 56 points ahead of the field. Citroen skipped the 2006 championship, preparing the C4 for the 2007 championship under new regulations. No problem for Loeb – he won the championship again, driving a Xsara for the private Kronos team. And that was in spite of missing the last four rounds, after breaking an arm in a mountain bike crash. It wasn’t always that easy, though. Ford’s Marcus Gronholm gave Loeb a tough fight in 2007 and in that season, in New Zealand, Loeb suffered the narrowest loss in world rally history, losing to Gronholm by just 0.3 of a second. In 2009 Loeb beat Mikko Hirvonen (Ford) by just one point after winning the final event of the season, Rally Great Britain. However last year brought no such anxieties, as Loeb clinched the title before the end of the season, helped by another win in New Zealand. Loeb twice contested the Le Mans race, with the French Pescarolo team using Judd V10 engines. His car failed to finish in 2005 but the following

year he and his teammates finished a fine second overall. Now he is looking to get back into racing, aiming to contest the 2014 World Touring Car Championship with Citroen.

Casey Stoner With just two world titles, Stoner’s career cannot really be compared with Loeb’s – but many experts believe the Australian could have become one of the great motorcycle champions if he had not decided to retire so young. Honda’s high estimation of him came in its offer of nearly $20 million to race for them in 2013. That’s more than the company has ever paid any of its motorsport stars. Raised on dirt track racing, the young Stoner – his first race was at age four – amassed a fine collection of titles in that field before deciding he wanted to go road racing. At 14 he was too young for that in Australia so his parents took him to England, where he was able to race 125cc bikes. Success came gradually but steadily and in 2003 – his fourth season in Europe – Stoner scored his first world championship victory, aboard an Aprilia in the 125cc class. The following year, now on a factory KTM, he finished fifth in that championship. A move up to the 250cc class, on a factory Aprilia, followed in 2005 and he took second in the championship after a close struggle with Dani Pedrosa, who of course also became a top MotoGP racer. Next season Stoner moved up to the top class, MotoGP, with a private Honda team. His best placing was a second and he came eighth in the championship, losing points with a series of crashes. That experience gained him a place in the factory Ducati team for 2007. The Ducati was very fast in a straight line but obviously difficult to ride in the corners. It kept twitching and bucking as if determined to throw the rider off, but Stoner mastered it

and he dominated the world championship that season, scoring 10 victories and taking the title by a massive 125 points (where a win earns 25 points). In 2008 Stoner came second to the great Valentino Rossi (Yamaha) but the next season he suffered from a mysterious, weakening illness which was eventually traced to lactose intolerance. Staying with Ducati for 2010, Stoner finished fourth in the championship and with the Ducati now appearing uncompetitive he moved to the factory Honda team for 2011 – and won his second title. For 2012 he took third in the championship, missing some races after breaking his ankle in a crash, but he had the consolation of dominating his home event, the Australian Grand Prix, in the penultimate round. Stoner, who has a young family, said he was retiring because he had lost his passion for motorcycle racing. Strong rumours say he will be racing a V8 Supercar next year. reader reply 0121231

Pukekohe brothers Carl and Hans Ruiterman are no strangers to success, the duo owning their own successful mechanical workshop and racing at New Zealand’s top level of motorsports. The pair co-own E&H Motors where they successfully manage their workshop around hectic racing schedules. It is no mean feat to own, manage and run a workshop when both management and the head mechanic are competing in top level motorsports around the country. While the boys have only owned the workshop for just over two years, they have been running it for about six years after their father established the business back in 1972. Hans Ruiterman, the younger brother, says that owning the workshop actually enables them both to go racing in their various disciplines of motorsport. “While one of us is racing, the other one is back here running the workshop, so it actually works quite well,” says Hans. Older brother Carl echoes the same sentiment. “A lot of what happens in the workshop translates over to motorsport. We have a deeper understanding of our cars, how they work and how to fix them when something goes wrong,” says Carl. And both agree that the trade connection, established through their business, supports their respective motorsport campaigns with advice and support from other tradespeople. The E&H Motors workshop covers a wide range of mechanical tasks including dyno-tuning, performance modifications, general service and repairs, including a large number of cam belts. “We build good cars too,” says Carl, who is dubbed ‘the top mechanic’ in the workshop and specialises in performance tuning. Hans, who leans more towards the management of the workshop, says ‚advertising our business through motorsport is extremely beneficial in our eyes, as it shows people what we do.‘ And what is it that they do? For a start, Carl is one of of the country‘s top drifters, having won the D1NZ National title in 2007 plus two other major series titles here in New Zealand. As well as drifting he has also turned his talented right foot to hillclimbs, not to

mention perfected the first 4-wheel-drive drift car in New Zealand. The all-wheel-drive drift Subaru Impreza can race with the best of them at rally-based events, such as hillclimbs but can also turn its wheels at drifting, impressing the masses here in New Zealand. Carl has also been impressing drift fans in China of

late at rounds of the World Drift Series where most recently he qualified second out of more than 60 competitors from China and around the world. “Drifting in China is just amazing,” he says. “It’s held in a huge stadium and about 40,000 people show up to watch. It’s just a whole new level of racing.” As for Hans, who started out as a talented Moto-X rider, but the 30-year-old now turns his attention to New Zealand’s GT2 racing series. He was also crowned New Zealand Time Attack Champion in 2012 in the Pro Open category, proving that the combination of his Nissan Silvia and the E&H Motors team are highly competitive. The brothers hope to expand their business further in the coming months with a few big plans on the horizon, which are being kept top secret, for now. Interestingly, although the brothers run a great business together, they have never raced together as part of the same team. Carl and Hans say sibling rivalry makes things highly competitive and keeps them on their toes, but the brothers hope to race together in the coming years where the duo could prove to be a force to be reckoned with.

When was the Auto Trade Direct sponsorship unveiled on the V8 Supertourer car this year? The new look livery featuring the new Auto Trade Direct brand was launched in August just before the Father’s Day 400 event at Taupo. The unveiling was attended by team sponsors and fans at the Ingham Mercedes-Benz dealership in Hamilton. Both drivers Scott McLaughlin and Jonathon Webb were on hand to unveil the new-look car and chat to the teams fans about the upcoming endurance race. How has the season been so far for driver Scott McLaughlin? Scott has scored three podiums in the Australian V8 Supercars Championship, including two round wins and sits second in the V8 Supercars Dunlop Series. He also made his V8 Supercars Championship debut at the Sandown 500 and Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 events, finishing in tenth and sixth places respectively and scored the rookie of the year honours. In New Zealand’s V8 SuperTourers Championship Scott leads the series in its inaugural year with one round remaining at Ruapuna Park in Christchurch in late November, having claimed five race wins, two round wins and setting two lap records in the six events conducted this far this year. What have been some of the highs and lows for the team this season? Scoring three wins from in three races at Hampton Downs in August, setting the fastest lap of the race in each and beating long-time hero Greg Murphy in the process. Also scoring the first endurance championship race win at Taupo Motorsport Park in September alongside his teammate, Jonathon Webb. How does Scotty feel about being the secondyoungest driver in the championship? Does this motivate him to try harder? Scott is the youngest-ever winner of a New Zealand SuperTourer event and the youngest-ever round victor. Should he claim the championship at the final event he will become the youngest-ever driver to do so. Having made his V8 Supercars debut in Australia at just 16, Scott says he is well aware of the pressures of being the youngest driver in the pack and he is also the youngest-ever winner of a V8 Supercar race and round. Scott trains extensively to give himself the competitive edge and when he is not in the gym he is driving a simulator to learn new tracks and refine his

skills. He also has a shifter kart which he uses to stay fit and sharpen his reflexes. What is the team’s goal for the next motorsport season? The team is singularly focused on winning this year‘s championship and will not shift its attention to 2013 until the chequered flag has flown on the final race of the year, but to go back to back would be an incredible achievement. High intensity racing action assured

Five weekends, fifteen races: Toyota Racing Series, New Zealand’s premier motor racing championship, kicks off 9-13 January at Invercargill’s Teretonga Park Raceway and concludes four weekends later with the 58th New Zealand Grand Prix at Manfeild near Palmerston North. With interest in the series from New Zealand and overseas drivers, the ninth season of TRS is likely to exceed the record turnout seen in 2012. They race against an outstanding line-up of young drivers from around the world. Leading the international charge for the title are Félix Serrallés IV (Puerto Rico), Bruno Bonifacio (Brazil) and Lucas Auer (Austria) who are all returning for a second attempt. They will be joined by up to 14 new signings which include Spike Goddard (Australia), Pipo Derani (Brazil) and Nicholas Latifi (Canada). The series has confirmed a suite of TV coverage deals that put the racing in front of TV audiences in Europe, the UK and Australia. Prime TV in New Zealand has been confirmed as local broadcaster and will televise all rounds as well as multiple screenings on SKY TV.
