So far more than 15,000 people have voted through the MTA website to retain the status quo but despite the fact that the website’s name is more likely to attract supporters rather than opposition, more than 8,000 have voted that it ought to be changed. The AA says it disagrees with the stance taken by the MTA in terms of the WoF affecting vehicle safety and road crashes. So what do you think? This issue is the single most important one that’s hit the servicing industry since the global financial crisis in 2007/2008 and it has the possibility of being equally financially devastating, so now is not the time to be apathetic about airing your opinions. Get online and vote, talk to your local MP, talk to your staff, talk to your customers, make sure that every one of them is made aware that they have a say.

AA says changes can improve road safety Lobby groups claiming that changes to the Warrant of Fitness (WoF) regime will lead to more road deaths are misleading the public, says the AA. It is concerned that this campaign is not presenting the full facts to the public. “Some of the opponents of change to the WoF system seem to be cherry-picking information and not mentioning the time and cost benefits for motorists from a revised testing scheme nor the changes we can make to improve vehicle safety,” says AA spokesperson Mark Stockdale. As part of the AA’s analysis of the changes being proposed, we looked at the data on every fatal crash in New Zealand over five years from 2007–2011. We did this to understand the possible safety impacts of any changes. The crash data showed that out of 1,640 crashes, there were 89 (or 5.4 percent) where a vehicle fault or factor was found that may have contributed to the crash. Of the vehicles in those 89 crashes, 39 percent did not have a current WoF and 52 percent had a tyre fault. Analysis of overall NZ road crashes indicates that vehicle faults contribute to about 2.5 percent of all fatal and injury crashes and to 0.4 percent where the fault is the sole cause of the crash.

To put that in some context, the most common factors contributing to fatal crashes are alcohol or drugs (36 percent), a driver losing control (34 percent) and going too fast for the conditions (32 percent). “Vehicle faults do play a part in a small number of road crashes but it’s misleading to simply claim that changing the WoF frequency will lead to that number increasing,” says Mr Stockdale. “Nearly 40 percent of the vehicles with faults that were involved in fatal crashes didn’t have a WoF anyway, so how frequently they are supposed to be getting one is not the issue. “Worn tyres is another key factor in crashes but there are other ways to target this than solely through a WoF. “Rather than having a regime that is testing the majority of motorists excessively we need to focus more on enforcement to get vehicles without WoFs off the road and investigate ways to better monitor tyre condition.” The AA has published a range of independent data on its website related to the WoF changes being considered. http://www.aa.co.nz/about/ safety-on-the-roads/safer-vehicles/vehicle-licensingreform-proposals/

Toyota is advising that a number of its vehicles are subject to a power window master switch recall. Toyota says there are 21,145 affected vehicles which were sold new in New Zealand and these were manufactured between the following dates: • Camry – March 2006 to April 2010 • Corolla – October 2006 to May 2010 • Highlander – February 2007 to April 2010 • RAV4 – September 2006 to May 2010 • Yaris – February 2006 to April 2010 An unspecified number of vehicles sold as used imports may also be involved. In the affected units, the sliding electrical contact module in the driver’s side power window master switch may experience a notch-y or sticking feeling during operation. Toyota says customers should not apply commercially available lubricants to fix the sticky feel as a short circuit causing melting or smoking of the switch assembly could occur. Owners of vehicles affected will receive a notification letter and are advised to arrange to have a Toyota dealer inspect the switch and, if required, they will apply a special grease. If the dealer determines the electrical circuit board in the switch has been affected, they will replace it. Toyota advises vehicle owners the remedial action will take approximately one hour, and will be at no cost to customers.

The ‘new’ last step Hunter calls it the ‘new’ last step in alignment service, and it's a must have to increasing numbers of workshops in New Zealand. Codelink is a patented device developed by Hunter Engineering USA that can be used on any of its Hawkeye wheel aligners that are equipped with Win-Align Version 11.0 software or newer – it is included free with the latest Hunter Elite in the purchase price. Separately it is available at $2,195 + GST. Essentially, Codelink is an all-in-one tool that replaces multiple OEM scan tools and can do most vehicles that require the Steering Angle Sensor reset. This is a requirement for many new vehicles from Japanese, Korean, American and European manufacturers. For many years, the last step in doing fourwheel alignment was to adjust the front toe on the vehicle followed by a printout to complete the job, but Hunter says that many of today’s vehicles now require a ‘new’ last step in that process, due to the sophisticated electronics that govern a number of steering and suspension systems. For instance, modern vehicles have a steering angle sensor that detects where it is positioned and collects driver inputs so it can feed those into the electronic stability control or to vary the amount of power assistance in the steering. In

some cases, that sensor requires recalibrating following the alignment, which now becomes the ‘new’ last step. To do this, the Codelink tool is hooked up to the aligner and the on-board diagnostic connector on the vehicle. It synchronises with the sophisticated software in the aligner to inform

the technician what vehicles need to have this performed and how to do it quickly and easily. If a vehicle requires this step, the technician is alerted on the Hunter screen to recalibrate the SAS using the Codelink device – there are stepby-step instructions for each vehicle, including where to insert the OBD-II plug. Codelink will then show the status of the steering system electronics and if the Steering Angle Sensor is not shown as zero when the wheel is positioned straight ahead, the technician can see this and by pushing the ‘continue’ button, they can instruct Codelink to do the recalibration. When the process is complete the machine instructs the technician to turn off the ignition remove the lead and print out the results. The printout now contains a line showing that the re-calibration was successfully completed and was done in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications, thus providing a record for the customer and also the workshop, for future reference. Without Codelink, workshops would require a separate scanning device but the process would be more involved because it is not interfaced with the Hunter and would take longer. World’s fastest wheel unveiled

Land speed record team, Aussie Invader, launched its campaign to beat the record at the recent Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) in Sydney. The team unveiled key components for its rocket-powered title contender Aussie Invader 5R including the world’s fastest wheel capable of breaking the 1,000 mph barrier (1,600km/h) and the rocket engine’s liquid oxygen and bio-parafin injector interface system, a key component of the 200,000hp rocket motor. The Aussie Invader 5R vehicle remained at the team’s Perth base. At nearly seven tonnes it was too large to transport to AIMS, however, a real-size model of the car was on display in Sydney to give visitors a good idea of the scale of the vehicle.

Driver and land speed legend Rosco McGlashan says the Aussie Invader 5R campaign was progressing well with the body of the vehicle now constructed and key components such as the wheels and the motor being produced in Australia. Aussie Invader 5R will run with four solid, tireless aluminium wheels, each weighing 100kg, spinning independently and capable if rotating at 10,000 rpm. The car’s rocket motor is capable of producing 62,000 pounds of thrust, over three times that produced by Aussie Invader 3, making it the world’s most powerful car. At 1,000 mph Rosco and the car will break the sound barrier by one and a half times and will be travelling faster than a bullet fired from a handgun. Rosco says much of the work involved in the

Aussie Invader 5R was pushing the boundaries of vehicle engineering and a range of Australian and some international experts were contributing to the campaign. “Producing these wheels is a good example of the many years of research, design and development by the Aussie Invader team, and it’s a testament to the hard work and skills of those involved with the project,” he says. As the race to the world land speed record and breaking the 1,000 mph mark heats up between the Australian and British teams, McGlashan is confident of the team’s chances in the land speed battle. “We’ve got the best people in the world working to get us to the start line and then across the finish line first. It’s a fierce but friendly competition between our British rivals Bloodhound but we’re well progressed with our build and will be firing up our rocket next year,” says Rosco. He also says that one of his next tasks was to look for potential test and track sites in Australia that could be considered alongside the options in the United States. A geographic search of Australia has revealed potential sites in Western Australia and in Queensland.

SAE-A 2012 Excellence Awards Engineering innovations were recognised by the 2012 Automotive Engineering Excellence Awards presented recently in Melbourne by the Society of Automotive Engineers – Australasia (SAE-A). To help promote the study of engineering and recognise future talent, the Society expanded the number of categories to include an Engineering Student prize, in addition to the National Excellence Award and the Young Engineer Award. Entries to these awards are invited from all organisations and individuals, who directly or indirectly provide products, processes or services to the vehicle and related industries. The Gold Award was awarded to the Ford Motor Company of Australia for the development and implementation of EcoLPi. This is a liquid phase injection LPG system the for the Ford Falcon platform that substantially increases power and torque and decreases fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. The Silver Award was awarded to GM Holden for the development and production of a Conformable Aluminium LPG Fuel Tank. This tank design is adaptable to the available space under the vehicle floor, resulting in major efficiency gains in mass, usable fuel volume and range. EV Engineering won the Bronze Award for the development and production of a fleet of seven fully electric, battery switchable Holden Commodore vehicles. The project included the design of the electric power train and supporting structures, low and high voltage electrical wiring, a controls architecture and associated software, cooling system, battery pack, battery latching system and battery switch station. Consortium partners include Better Place Australia, Robert Bosch Australia,

AutoCRC, GM Holden and VPAC won the Highly Commended award for the development and prototyping of a Virtual Paint Simulation (VPS) process. The prototype VPS system uses rapid paint shop simulation tools based on innovative methods and approaches, such as smoothed particle hydrodynamics and lumped parameter modelling. It allows optimisation of the painting process using laptops in near real time rather than costly high performance computers, and is undergoing user trails to be deployed in nine to 12 months. The Young Engineer Award went to Christopher Jones, Specialist Engineer – Fuel Systems, GM Holden. Jones has been a key technical team member on the 2012 GM Holden LPG program for Commodore. He contributed to development and testing of the gaseous phase LPG tar filter, the Conformable Aluminium LPG Pressure Fuel Tank and associated valving, fuel pump hardware and control software, and the heated KPG vaporiser and associated control system algorithms to enable successful cold starts without the expense of liquid LPG systems or the use of petrol. The Engineering Student Project award went to Sian Hong Teoh and Ruoyu Ding, Department of Mechanical Engineering, University of Melbourne. Celebrating 40 years in fine VW style Qualitat European Motors Ltd recently celebrated its 40th year of operation with anniversary function at its premises on Saturday October 6 that saw more than 250 people come from near and far for the event. It was many months in the planning but Qualitat directors Wayne and Josie Fenton say they enjoyed every moment of their recent 40th anniversary celebration which saw a gathering of former business partners, as well as past and present employees, suppliers, and customers at their Penrose premises located at 220 Station Road. On this special occasion Wayne and Josie particularly wanted to thank and acknowledge their long serving staff members: Steve (26 years), Ron (combined 24 years), Vagn (20 years), Holly (18 years), Julian (11 years), Saravan (10 years) and Mo (8 years). There were informal presentations by Wayne and Josie to acknowledge both the staff members and customers who have supported the company for more than 40 years, in particular Steve Cox who joined Qualitat from Giltraps more than 26 years ago. In recognition of his loyalty and dedication, Wayne and Josie presented Steve with a House of Travel voucher. Although Qualitat currently services and sells parts for all classic and current VW, Audi and Skoda vehicles – the company started life servicing and rebuilding air-cooled VW Beetles, Karmann Ghia coupes, Type 3 and 4 models and Kombi vans in the early 1970s. This rebuilding business continued well into the 1980s because many other general garages weren’t confident at repairing the air-cooled

VW engines. Indeed – the rebuilding service was so unique, customers would drive their cars up to the service dept, have their engine swapped out for a loan one, and beetle off, while Wayne and the team rebuilt the old engine. The company also employed two full-time panelbeaters who did rust and restoration repairs on the air-cooled cars. As would be expected from a gathering of committed Volkswagen enthusiasts there were many of these unique and interesting air-cooled cars brought along for the day. Josie says that the many VW vehicles parked up and down Station Road and Rockfield Road gathered a lot of attention from passing motorists who slowed down to have a look at them. Qualitat Motors was officially founded on Monday October 2, 1972 at 271 Mount Smart Road, Penrose by former Five Star Motors employees Wayne Fenton, Wayne Talbot and Jim Phillips. Josie Fenton joined the business in 1980 to source and import VW parts which has become a major part of the current business structure. At that time Qualitat added Audi parts and service to its programme. Jim Phillips left the business in the 1970s due to ill health and Wayne Talbot retired from Qualitat in 1995, leaving Wayne and Josie Fenton in sole charge. In 1999 the company changed its name from Qualitat Motors and Qualitat Autoparts to

The company bought and moved into its current premises in 2005, which enabled the parts and service divisions to be stabled under one roof rather than the previous three buildings in Mt Smart Rd which it had outgrown. Since the move to Station Road in 2005, Qualitat has added Skoda parts and service to its offer and quadrupled its stock holding of parts for all three

The importance of the heater valve For the cabin to warm up, an engine's internal system must function properly. This system is known as the vehicle's engine cooling system. The heater valve and heater hose are integral components in a vehicle’s engine cooling system. Their combined performance impacts on the engines ability to regulate the heat inside the cabin of a vehicle. The heater hose transfers engine coolant to the heater valve. In this way the heat produced in the engine, and controlled by the cooling system, is moved to the heater valve and utilised to warm the cabin of the vehicle. However the heater valve and connecting hoses can also cause engine damage should they leak or not function properly. More specifically, a leak in either the heater valve or hose can influence the loss of engine coolant from the cooling system, and lead to the engine overheating. This can result in costly engine damage. Further, a coolant leak means that a heater cannot produce enough heat to warm the cabin of the vehicle. For this reason, it is good service practice to replace the heater valve and heater hose at the same time. Gates says its heater valve and hose assemblies contain all the necessary parts required when replacing the heater valve. These assembly packs are complete with heater valve, all connecting heater hoses and hose clamps. Technical advice on disc thickness variation (DTV) Disc Thickness Variation is where the rotor or disc varies in thickness as indicated in the diagram below:

How does it occur? DTV is the uneven wear of the rotor during service and often this does not become apparent until 10,000 to 15,000 kms after disc machining or replacement. Poorly serviced calipers can accelerate the occurrence of DTV as can high levels of rotor run-out at fitment (greater than 0.10mm). This is not generally visible to the human eye and must be measured with a micrometer. It is often caused by offbrake wear resulting in flat spots or thin sections of the disc.

How to measure?

How to prevent it?

Measuring is done by checking the thickness of the rotor using a Vernier Caliper 25mm in front of the outer edge. Measurements should be taken at a minimum of 10 points around the circumference and there should be no greater variance than 0.03mm between any of these measurements.

In the preventative area Disc Thickness Variation will not occur if there is zero rotor run-out. Vehicle design, tolerance variations and general wear and tear may however mean that zero run-out tolerance is unachievable. On-vehicle measurement of rotor run-out with an accurate dial indicator coupled with a good quality torque wrench to tighten the wheel nuts will minimise DTV effects. Less run-out leads to slower DTV generation. Installed run-out should be less that 100µm (0.1mm) and when this cannot be achieved checks on the bearings, flange, stub axle and rotor hat should be made. Wheel nuts should be evenly torqued with the use of a torque wrench to avoid distortion.

How to fix it? To correct the problem the rotor should be replaced or machined with a light skim to clean up any DTV flat spots. If the vehicle is using ceramic pads the rotor must be machined as part of every brake job. Calipers should be overhauled, side pins must move freely and the piston seals must be checked for good condition or replaced. On-vehicle machining eliminates variation in axles, bearings etc.

What does it cause? The symptoms can be recognised by a torque variation i.e. grab and release during braking. As the disc rotates through the caliper the variation in the disc thickness results in a variation in the braking pressure applied by the disc pads to the rotor. The torque variation in the breaking is translated in vibration through the steering wheel, floor plan, seat or pedal pulsing.

V8 Supercars unveils plan for Pukekohe V8 Supercars has unveiled plans for a $6.6 million upgrade which it says will return Auckland’s Pukekohe Park Raceway to its former glory as the premier motor sport facility in New Zealand. Details of the significant capital outlay were outlined by Tony Cochrane, Chairman of V8 Supercars, and CEO David Malone recently at Pukekohe Park Raceway. The V8 Supercar Championship event returns to Pukekohe from April 12–14, 2013. The Auckland event will be one of three internationals to be staged outside of Australia, with others in Abu Dhabi and Austin, Texas. The upgrade of the Pukekohe Park Raceway will begin in

There is a major change to the pit area, which will be extended to allow for 32 new pit garages and a new state-of-the-art control building. Three additional turns will be built into the track before the hairpin on the back straight with the additional of overhead over-track pedestrian bridges, over-track signage, improved viewing areas and a general improvement of the venue. The upgrades will offer a significantly improved experience for the sport and the fans, and allow for an elevated FIA Safety level for the circuit.

An economic impact assessment concluded that Auckland can expect approximately 50,000 visitor nights annually as a result of the V8 Supercars event which will bring an estimated $35 million in additional GDP into the city’s economy over the next five years. ATEED, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and V8 Supercars are each contributing $2.2 million to the Pukekohe Park upgrade. Automechanika shifts to Shanghai Automechanika Shanghai, the world’s second largest Automechanika show after Frankfurt, Germany, will be held at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre from 11-14 December. Organised by Messe Frankfurt (Shanghai) Co Ltd and CNAICO – China National Automotive Industry International Corporation – the show covers the whole automobile industry chain including OE and aftermarket, as well as three main industry sectors: parts and components, repair and maintenance and accessories and tuning. Automechanika Shanghai has collaborated with domestic associations and organisations in more than 50 automotive production and distribution bases in China to bring many dealers and distributors to visit the 2012 show to meet the 3,900 exhibitors. Vehicle procurement, R&D and quality control personnel from more than 20 domestic car manufacturers including BYD, Cherry, Dongfeng, FAW, Great Wall, JAC and SAIC will visit the show to meet with current and potential suppliers. In addition to the first UK pavilion, several overseas pavilions have increased in size for the 2012 show. India has expanded by 75 percent, and Korea and Malaysia by more than 30 percent. In addition, Taiwan pavilions in the accessories and tuning hall as well as the parts and components and repair and maintenance halls have expanded by more than 40 percent. Other overseas pavilions including France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Spain, Thailand and USA will also make their appearance again at this year’s show The Taiwan Transportation Vehicle Manufacturers Association (TTVMA), which represents more than 2,000 member manufacturers and representatives from automobile, motorcycle, bicycles industries in Taiwan, is organising the Taiwan pavilions at the show for the first time, together with the Importers and Exporters Association of Taipei. This year’s edition of Automechanika Shanghai will also feature its largest number of Chinese pavilions supported by more than 50 trade organisations and industry associations. Xiamen is a production base for car mat and window film and the Xiamen Automotive Parts Trade Association (XMAPTA)

Making servicing a profitable enterprise Robert Barry speaks to Autosuper Shoppe Albany director David Storey about his experiences in making vehicle servicing a profitable enterprise.

Auto Super Shoppe Albany director David Storey has two simple pieces of advice for owner/managers of automotive servicing centres in the current trading climate. “Don’t leave the analysis of

your workshop’s productivity and profitability until the end of the financial year or you might find yourself in trouble,” he says. “And more importantly if your workshop solely relies on the Warrant of Fitness as its main source of workshop revenue, then you are already in trouble.” In David’s personal opinion the forthcoming changes to the vehicle licencing and the Warrant of Fitness regime as well as the continual extension of new vehicle warranty and servicing agreements to five or more years is going to speed up the death knell of the general repairer who doesn’t work smarter rather than harder.

The importance behind car service

The seemingly simple car service is not just a simple oil change, due to the complexities that the engine oil has to cater to in the modern engine according to Shell. Productivity and margin According to David the best way for workshops to increase turnover and profitability is to measure its productivity and hours charged on a weekly basis and also to ensure it is charging an adequate margin such as 30 percent on the parts and consumables used in servicing. “I can look into our computer systems and check how we are tracking at anytime,” he says. “I also have a weekly catch up with the service manager where we compare the actual workload put through, as opposed to the budget projections.” “We all know that an oil and filter change is a loss leader for most workshops, but it’s finding the parts that need replacing during a technical inspection while the customer’s vehicle is in the workshop which gives an opportunity to make a little more margin, but also prevent unnecessary repairs in the future. “Looking for troublesome oil or water leaks, is a good way to add incremental business such as a water pump job for $400 to $500 dollars but also prevent the customer from a potential blown head gasket that could cost anywhere between $1,500 to $2,000. “We had a recent episode where a customer driving a late model Toyota SUV was 2000km overdue for a service and her vehicle came to a complete stop because there was no drive from the transmission. “It turned out that the transmission pan gasket was punctured and all the lubricant had eventually leaked out. Had the vehicle come in for its service when due, that pan gasket leak could have been easily detected and rectified for a couple of hundred dollars rather than the $8,600 the customer had to spend on a brand new transmission. “One thing too that workshop owners and managers should bear in mind with large jobs of $5,000 or more is to get a substantial deposit of $2,000 to $3,000 from the customer before work commences. “Sometimes people give the go-ahead to the workshop, and then may not have the wherewithal to pay

in full when the job is completed, leaving the garage out of pocket and with an unwanted vehicle that may not sell for enough to defray the costs involved. “The bottom line for workshops is that its more profitable to have a volume of service work coming through the door. They are better off doing several water pump jobs in a day rather than one head gasket job. It’s simply a matter of technicians being thorough in the initial inspection.”

Communication and retention David says that the most important thing that workshops should do is communicate clearly to the customers, especially if the workshop discovers that more work is needed to be done on a vehicle than the customer has initially been quoted on. “Always, always inform the customer that your initial quote is incorrect and that you need their authority to go ahead with the additional worked required, always get their buy-in before you start the job,” he says. “In my experience this is the biggest gripe we see from customers who come to MTA mediation sessions over work done on their vehicles, they feel aggrieved that they were notinformed or consulted before the work was done. A simple phone call or email can avoid this. “Marketing your business is also important, it’s essential to send out those six-monthly service and safety check reminders, and make sure you have an adequate customer retention management (CRM) programme in place. “Having your own workshop website, as well as sending out newsletters and offering discount vouchers to be used on return visits are all good and simple methods to keep in touch with your client database. David’s final piece of advice for successful servicing: “Getting the basics right in the workshop is absolutely critical, but be creative with your CRM and it will pay dividends.”

A mighty motor oil

Regenerating DPF with Wynn’s If a diesel vehicle arrives in the workshop with a warning light or showing a fault code that technicians couldn’t recognise or clear, a possible cause could be a blocked diesel particulate filter (DPF). If the vehicle could not complete an active regeneration process when the first warning light appeared the vehicle will enter limp mode or will display other symptoms such as loss of power, increased fuel consumption and poor acceleration. The DPF systems must be cleaned at regular intervals to remove the soot it has collected in order to maintain engine performance. DPF’s have been around for many years but since 2009 when the Euro 5 emissions standards came into force, all new diesel cars effectively require fitment of a DPF unit in the exhaust system. The DPF is designed to filter out more than 80 percent of particulate matter (soot) and harmful gases. The design and material used within the DPF, resembles a muffler and the cells within are formed in a honeycomb like manner. Within the cells are inert ceramic and noble metals which convert the harmful combustion gases into more environmentally friendly exhaust gases. Like other filters, the DPF will become blocked as it captures more particulate matter (soot). Once it reaches a predetermined level and when the driving parameters allow it, the DPF self-cleans commonly referred to as regeneration, without the driver knowing. However, if a vehicle is not driven in a manner that allows it to regenerate, then the filter can become blocked to the point where a warning light appears on the dash as early as 600 – 1,000kms of driving. If the warning light is ignored and the vehicle is continued to be driven, the limp home mode

will be activated as a result of the DPF becoming blocked. In most cases the DPF will require replacement and the associated costs can be upwards of $2,500, plus labour costs and new sensors which may also require replacement. It is recommended that the vehicle is serviced and a complete oil and oil filter change be carried out. Under normal conditions the regeneration process will happen when the exhaust gases reach 550˚C – 650˚C. The melting point for Aluminium is 660˚C so if technicians need to do a forced regeneration they must be aware of the surrounding area and where all the extra heat is going to exit to ensure that no damage is caused to the interior of the vehicle or to nearby equipment – under normal driving conditions the airflow around the DPF keeps the external heat down. When the vehicle is driven in short trips, in city traffic and stop start traffic, the exhaust gases are

lower in temperature producing more particulate matter (soot), accelerating the blockage of the DPF. Wynn’s says it has identified this constant DPF issue and has worked closely with OEM’s to develop a product to help the regeneration parameters. When added into the diesel tank Wynn›s says its DPF cleaner and regenerator dramatically reduces the carbon deposit decomposition (burning) temperatures to 450˚C – 500˚C. This greatly widens the parameters for the vehicle to regenerate the DPF allowing more frequent burn off at lower driving speeds, thus overcoming the issue of the DPF blocking due to city driving cycles as described earlier. Wynn’s recommend adding a bottle of Wynn's Diesel Particulate Filter cleaner and regenerator to every third tank fill or at every 3,000 km travelled. As the motor industry awaits the outcomes of the WOF review – workshops need to consider carefully how they position themselves in respect to service work. Recent trends have seen several businesses focus on ‘quick’ lube servicing to meet time strapped consumer requirements. Ryco believes this type of service needs to be well executed. It says that good operators ensure the service offer goes beyond the traditional price pointed oil and filter change and that staff can support the recommended brand choice as not all time conscious motorists are price pointed – some are also looking for both convenience and peace of mind. Not all filters are created equal, Ryco says that specification levels do vary significantly – and the quality of a filter will ultimately affect longevity of components and in a more immediate sense can impact maintenance and running costs. Educating staff about the vehicle manufacturer’s set service interval filter inspections and replacements in order to maintain the entire vehicle in optimum condition including fair wear and tear – means they can be comfortable and knowledgeable when explaining to consumers the Ryco benefits and value in a service offer that covers the minimum of oil, air and fuel filtration. In an automatic transmission the fluid acts as the lubricant, hydraulic fluid, coolant, and cleaner to the transmission including the torque converter. Over time the fluid deteriorates and the filter will become restricted and lessen the flow of fluid. A timely transmission service can help extend the life of a transmission. As a rule, the transmission filter should be replaced when the fluid is changed. Ryco recommend a fluid change every 50,000 to 80,000 kms. The fluid can also burn (oxidise) if the transmission is overworked and generates excessive heat. Again the type of vehicle use impacts upon transmission service cycles, eg, vehicles that tow trailers or heavy loads need to change fluid and filters every 50,000 kms. Exedy explains flywheels What is a dual mass flywheel?

The Dual Mass Flywheel derives its name from the two main components (or masses) that operate independently of each other. The primary component (or mass) is fitted with a ring gear and sensor ring (if applicable) and is attached to the crankshaft. This primary component usually incorporates a dampening mechanism typically made up of torsion springs and friction washer that are ideally suited to absorb torsional vibrations within the drive train. The clutch unit is then bolted onto the secondary component. Quite simply, a DMF is a damper for your drive train. A DMF can fail for a number of reasons but the most common cause will be wear and tear. When it comes to replacement of a worn DMF system the cost can be prohibitive. As such, Exedy has developed a range of Single Mass Flywheels (SMF) which are sold together with the clutch cover

assembly, clutch disc assembly and release bearing to replace the DMF clutch system. The benefits of SMF VS DMF systems:

The main advantage of an SMF clutch package according to Exedy is the price – these systems are generally a cheaper option. Because the SMF has no moving components, they can be machined and re-installed into the vehicle when a subsequent new clutch is fitted also reducing the future cost of maintaining the clutch system. Wulf Gaertner expands

Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG will almost double the storage capacity provided at its Hamburg central warehouse in an expansion project which started in June. The available storage space at the company’s headquarters will total more than 56,000 pallet spaces when construction finishes in 2013. Under its Meyle and Meyle-HD brands Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG says it engineers and manufactures replacement parts that match OE

quality. The product portfolio of more than 17,000 items covers virtually all leading applications. By creating another 25,000 pallet spaces on over 130,000 sq ft, Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG says it is laying the foundation to further expand its product range and meet the demands of new international markets. The company says the expansion will allow it to keep larger inventories of the best-selling items which it will

then be able to ship faster thanks to more efficient and streamlined processes. Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG says it is going to invest about 40 million euros in the next three to five years to future-prove its operations. Besides increasing its warehouse capacities, the company is planning on setting up a training centre featuring a vehicle lift and wheel alignment stand. It is also building a new staff restaurant offering a terrific view. This will be complemented by new offices. “When working out the expansion plans, one of our guiding principles was to offer existing and future employees an attractive place to work in the Hamburg metropolitan area,” says Meyle board member Marita Schwartze. This way the specialist manufacturer of steering and suspension parts will back up its sustained business growth by reinforcing human resources. At

present, there are 350 employees at the Hamburg headquarters, and the trend is rapidly growing. Together with its partner companies Wulf Gaertner Autoparts AG employs more than 1,200 people. Since opening in 1997 the existing logistics centre has already seen three enlargements. The new extension is scheduled to be ready for service by the beginning of 2013. The Meyle-HD brand is exclusively distributed in NZ by All Euro Parts and director Auric Mirfin recently visited the company at both their stand at Automechanika in Frankfurt as well as the expanding headquarters in Hamburg. Quality and frequency is critical. Motor Equipment News spoke with some transmission specialists about the problems modern automotive gearboxes pose to general workshops and how best to diagnose and repair them. A few decades ago gearboxes were relatively simple devices, manual transmissions commonly had four or five forward gears – automatics had three or four, and life for the general garage was pretty straight forward in terms of servicing them. However in the last decade the car industry in particular has developed conventional lock-up torque-converter automatic transmissions with up to nine forward gears, then there are continuously variable transmissions (CVT) which have no actual gears but use a variable belt drive to transfer power to the wheels. Another development is hybrid automated single or dual clutch transmissions, which are in fact manual gearboxes which have an electro-hydraulic single or dual clutch system to engage and disengage the

forward and reverse gears. Naturally vehicles equipped with all three of these new high-tech gearboxes will eventually make their way to the independent workshop for servicing and overhaul soon after the warranty period expires and this is where specialist knowledge of trade suppliers such as The Gearbox Factory comes to the fore. Director Keith Lane has been involved in the business for more than 30 years and sales co-ordinator Steve Hamilton has been with the company for more than 15 years and both say that diagnosing and repairing transmissions is all that they do. Factory and has been ever since the proliferation of Japanese imports in the mid to late 1990s, when the company was frequently rebuilding transmissions for the secondhand car traders. Both Keith and Steve agree that automatic transmissions, and in particular those manufactured after 2004, require more specialist service and care. “The frequency of the service and the quality of the lubricant used is critical to the longevity and well being of a modern automatic transmission regardless of its design and makeup,” says Keith. “Flushing your client’s vehicle with a cheaper but inferior quality of lubricant may not be in their best interest or yours,” he says.

“Electronics now play a much greater role in the control of transmissions, particularly dual clutch units and often the mechatronic computers are housed within the gearbox casing, which means they are surrounded by the transmission oil. “This design means that the aftermarket industry will have to be equipped to deal with electronic failures in the future, where coolant may have entered the transmission through a cracked hose pipe and contaminated the electronics,” says Keith. “Also in the case of electrohydraulic clutches used in clutchless transmissions – the electronics cannot compensate for worn clutch parts – the computer cannot detect clearance and wear and often the problems are

undetected until it’s too late and all drive is lost. Keith says that drivers of vehicles with clutchless transmissions need to be sympathetic in their driving style because its all too easy to ‘ride the clutch’ unnecessarily when stationary at an intersection or when in heavy traffic. “In the case of CVT transmissions the support bearings are often highly loaded and therefore as they age it is inevitable that failure may occur. “Some OEMs recommend that the first service on their transmission occur at just over the 100,000km mark and we would stress that those units are very sensitive and will need the correct fluids replaced within the time frame specified and not a moment longer,” says Keith. reader reply 0121133

To flush or not to flush There is an added bonus of a slim suction sampling gun, so workshop technicians can get an oil sample from the dipstick pipe and then use the Perspex display unit to show client’s before and after samples. The exchanger manufacturer’s fittings cover most OEMS such as: Alfa Romeo, Audi, Renault, BMW, Citroen Saab, Lancia, GM, Opel, Toyota, Volvo, and other popular Japanese and Korean brands. Flushing? Is it really necessary? This is one of the most frequently asked questions by workshops when investigating transmission flushing equipment to extend their servicing ability. The simplest answer is: if the car is serviced regularly, then including an oil flush will extend the service life of the transmission. Dirt is one of the quickest killers of automatic transmissions, since they were first developed, which is why manufacturers fitted fine mesh filters to capture the larger particles shed by the clutch plates. The oil deteriorates while being circulated within the transmission to lubricate, cool and protect moving parts. The cleaner the oil, the better it is able to do what it was designed for, protecting the transmission. With modern transmissions becoming increasingly more elaborate, with technologies including six, eight and even nine-speed transmissions with shift on the fly, paddle shift, as well as power and economy modes becoming common, correspondingly the maintenance demands on the transmission have increased. The Sumake transmission flush kit has been around for more than 30 years and is well proven in the NZ workshop environment. It is supplied with a comprehensive 26-piece adaptor kit allowing it to mate up to OEM manufacturer’s fittings and universal hose tails.

The humble transmission jack is a mechanic's best friend, when it comes to handling the transmission disassembly in a safe fashion according to Sulco Tools and Equipment. More than one mechanic has lost time off work due to injury when handling a large gearbox. Sulco says that 4x4 HD transmissions and some which are designed to come out with the transfer case still attached, can be far heavier than expected. With diesels vehicles becoming more popular, particularly in the RV vehicles range and many being supplied as six or seven speed versions the

gearboxes are getting heavier and with vehicle designers maximising interior size, there is often very little clearance around the gearbox. This means it can be very difficult to manoeuvre a gearbox back into place, making a transmission jack essential. Single stage telescopic transmission jacks are normally supplied with a simple cup cradle, which the gearbox is sat on and chained to (more elaborate tilt tables an optional accessory). The jack is raised by a simple foot pedal and lowered by a spring loaded control valve that closes as soon as you let go of it (dead man control). Automotive transmission jacks are available in a range of capacities from 300kg to 750kg and are easily moved around on a four castor base. The only negative is the height of the lowered position is quite high, according to Sulco especially when technicians need to lift a gearbox onto it and they are limited at full height by the stroke of the ram. To address this issue, two stage transmission jacks are available in a range of capacities from 500kg to 1,200kg and can extend from 1,193 mm to 2,008 mm. feet with castors and are engineered for years of troublefree operation. The latest arrival is the 15t truck telescopic transmission jack. Former Warriors, Leeds and Kiwi coach Brian ‘Bluey’ McClennan has recently joined the Kaspa Transmissions Group. Flywheel technology gathers pace Improvements in fuel economy of up to 22.4 percent have been demonstrated by a research vehicle fitted with a flywheel hybrid system including stop-start. Developed by a consortium of British companies as part of a UK government-supported programme for premium vehicles, the mechanicallydriven flywheel system delivers up to 80bhp (82PS, 60kW) of recovered energy from a self-contained hybrid module. In the NEDC cycle, the flywheel hybrid including stop-start achieved an 11.9 percent improvement. The consortium believes that mechanical hybrids solve many of the challenges associated with electric hybrids. There is no inefficient conversion of energy from kinetic to electrical to chemical and back. And the cost, weight, packaging and recycling issues associated with batteries are also eliminated. “The research shows the potential of mechanical hybrids as an affordable alternative to battery hybrids,” says Prodrive’s head of vehicle engineering, David Hemming. “Both the fuel economy results and the drive ability are impressive, even with early-stage calibrations and no other design optimisation.” The engineering development vehicle recovers energy via the rear differential through a continuously variable transmission (CVT) into a high-speed flywheel. When the driver reapplies the accelerator, the CVT smoothly transfers the energy back to the wheels. The flywheel and its drive system are installed adjacent to the rear axle, in the space normally occupied by the spare wheel and the whole system weighs 80kg. Minimal body and packaging changes were required to integrate the system. There is no change to the driveline configuration. Designed by Flybrid Systems, the flywheel is

constructed from carbon composite and operates in a partial vacuum, allowing it to spin at up to 60,000rpm. The CVT, which manages the flywheel’s speed and the flow of energy in each direction, has been built by UK precision-engineering firm Xtrac using proven traction drive technology from Torotrak. Prodrive is responsible for the system’s configuration and integration into the vehicle. Prodrive also developed the system’s complex control strategy and software including preliminary calibrations. European International Truck of the Year 2013 In choosing the Stralis Hi-Way from Iveco as their 2013 European ‘International Truck of the Year’, the award judges stated that the heavy duty truck “has made the greatest contribution to road transport efficiency from several different perspectives including: fuel economy; safety; driveability; comfort and a low-environmental footprint”. The annual award - given by 25 commercial vehicle magazines in Europe - was presented at the recent gala evening of the 64th Hanover International Motor Show. Hanover is Europe’s largest commercial and industrial vehicle show. The new Stralis is produced to the highest standards of manufacturing quality according to Iveco. This, combined with a range of new features significantly

reduces the total cost of ownership (TCO). The AD/ AT and ASL models will be made at the Iveco Trucks Australia Dandenong plant and the ATi at the IVECO plant in Madrid, Spain. All versions will be available in Australia from May 2013. Equipped with FPT industrial cursor engines, the new Stralis ensures low fuel consumption and excellent performance. Developing new valve seats Federal-Mogul Corporation says it has developed two new valve seat insert materials that help address some of the most difficult challenges faced by heavy duty diesel engine manufacturers. The company says its FM-S33E material provides unprecedented durability under the most extreme operating temperatures for both intake and exhaust applications, while the FM-S25A material gives exceptional resistance to corrosive wear, arising from sulphur compounds in fuel. The trend towards reducing CO2 and other emissions from vehicles has led to higher levels of boost, higher pressure fuel injection and the use of alternate fuels, often combined with downsized engine displacement. The resulting increases in thermal and mechanical loads around the combustion chamber, combined with more challenging lubrication conditions for the valve train, threaten the durability of the valves and valve seat inserts. To meet these challenges, FederalMogul says it has developed complex powder metal formulations specially

tailored to provide the required physical properties. Federal-Mogul says its FM-S33E can solve abrasive and adhesive wear issues on everything from boosted downsized petrol engines to heavy duty diesels. Compatible with hard-faced and nitrided valves, FM-S33E is a high alloy powder metal composite material combining a tool steel mix with cobalt hard particles for wear resistance, plus copper infiltration for good thermal management. Developed initially for exhaust valve

seat applications, the material also provides a solution for intake valve seats operating in aggressive environments. FM-S33E has been in series production since 2011. The second new material, FMS25A, is a high chromium content powder metal composite alloy steel that provides exceptional corrosion resistance while at the same time retains high strength and wear resistance from its material and microstructure design. It was developed to address the specific corrosive wear problem with intake

valve seats arising from regional variations in the sulphur content of diesel fuel, a key issue for the heavyduty diesel market. Unlike conventional alloy steel, FederalMogul says that FM-S25A has a duplex structure, made up of both Ferritic and Austenitic phases. The duplex structure, combined with finely dispersed spheroidal carbides, submicroscopic nitrides and solid lubricant particles within the material provide long service with good resistance to abrasive and adhesive wear. Comparison testing of FM-S25A against conventional valve seat insert materials has been carried out to the German VDA 230-214 standard for corrosion. At temperatures up to 400°C in a highly corrosive solution of sodium chloride, sulphuric and nitric acid, the new material showed at least three times lower weight loss compared to standard in use valve seat technologies. Volvo grows in Southland Motor Truck Distributors (NZ) Ltd (MTD) announced recently that it will be integrating the Volvo, Trucks and Buses franchise into a brand new facility in Invercargill on January 7th 2013. The opening of the new purposebuilt facility will provide more support for Volvo Truck and Bus customers in the Southland region. The new facility will be part of the Truck Stops (NZ) national network. Jamie Whincup celebrates his fourth Bathurst victory

The golden year of Bathurst Bernard Carpinter reports on the 50th anniversary of the Bathurst 1000 Kiwi hopes were high at the start of Australia’s ‘Great Race’, the 1000km Bathurst event for V8 Supercars. Regular drivers Shane Van Gisbergen and Fabian Coulthard were in fine form, and several Kiwis had gained co-driving positions with good teams. Qualifying and the top-10 shootout went very well for the Kiwi brigade, but alas things turned out badly in the race – more through bad luck than bad driving. The long race ended with two Aussies battling for the victory. This was the 50th running of the Bathurst classic, which gave the drivers and teams extra incentive to win the historic event. A few of the teams acknowledged their history by painting their cars to resemble their famous racers of earlier years. Van Gisbergen arrived at Bathurst standing fifth in the championship, driving the Stone Brothers Racing Falcon in SP Tools colours. He and co-driver Luke Youlden had finished fifth in the Sandown 500, the lead-up event to Bathurst, after starting from pole. The young Kiwi was so fired up for Bathurst that Ross Stone said his protégé had been driving him crazy. Coulthard was eighth in the championship, and had David Besnard – who has raced NZV8s here – as his co-driver in the Lockwood Commodore, run by Brad Jones Racing. Both the Kiwis qualified for the top 10 shootout, where Van Gisbergen took third and Coulthard fifth. Coulthard had caused a surprise in the preliminary qualifying when he was second fastest, only 0.0786 seconds behind champion Jamie

Whincup in the Triple Eight Vodafone Commodore. His performance this year has been particularly praiseworthy because Brad Jones Racing is not one of the biggest and richest teams. “It’s a bit of a dream really, I never thought I would be top three in qualifying at Bathurst; it’s a pretty cool moment,” says Van Gisbergen. “I was quite nervous before the shootout, I just sat in the car and had a little sleep and thought through it all. “It was all right, I sort of under-drove some spots thinking that the grip wouldn’t be where it was, then the next corner I tried to make up for it and over-drove. It was pretty cool coming down the mountain, our car is not too bad down there so I pushed quite hard.” Coulthard was delighted with his best-ever qualifying at Bathurst. “Getting the tyres up to temp was the biggest thing for us and obviously it shows because we started off poorly in the first sector and then got better and better until I got the quickest last sector,” he says. “You only have one lap to do it though and you have to make the most of it. Overall I’m happy with the result; it’s the best qualifying position I’ve had at this circuit, and the most important thing was for the car to come back in one piece because the race is tomorrow.” Kiwi hero – and four-times Bathurst winner – Greg Murphy has missed a lot of racing this year when he needed two operations on his back to remedy problems caused by heavy crashes. But he was back

behind the wheel of the Pepsi Max BJR Holden and he qualified 23rd, not entirely happy with the car. Triple NZV8 champion John McIntyre was very pleased after the top-10 shootout – he was co-driving with Ford Performance Racing star Will Davison, who put their Falcon on pole. Whincup was second fastest and FPR’s Mark (Frosty) Winterbottom fourth. Other Kiwis in the race as co-drivers were teenager Scott McLaughlin with Jonathon Webb (Tekno Holden), Craig Baird with Lee Holdsworth (Stone Brothers Ford), Steven Richards with Winterbottom, Chris Pither with David Wall (Britek BJR Holden), Daniel Gaunt with Karl Reindler (Kelly Holden), Matt

Coulthard was fourth and things were Fabian Coulthard: fast but unlucky. looking good for the top Kiwis – although Reid had to stop on the circuit with driveline problems, bringing out the safety car and the Halliday-Fiore car stopped very early with a suspension failure. After the first pit stops McIntyre led from Van Gisbergen’s co-driver Luke Youlden. Craig Lowndes’ co-driver Warren Luff passed Youlden for second. But it was becoming apparent that tyres were becoming a big issue, wearing out faster than expected. “That’s going to be the story of the day,” says Davison.

It was the left-hand tyres that were the problem, even though Bathurst is mainly a left-turn circuit so you would expect the right-hand tyres to be wearing fastest. Teams decided the extreme wear was being cause by drivers going over the kerbs on the left-hand corners, and asked their drivers to be easy on the kerbs. V8 Supercars use control Dunlop tyres, so everybody faced the same difficulties. McIntyre pitted early because he was worried about his tyres, and that put the team off its planned strategy. Coulthard’s co-driver Besnard was losing places and when most of the field pitted during a safety-car period Besnard had to queue behind another BJR car (teams can handle only car at a time) and lost a lot of time and places. When racing resumed McIntyre – who had not pitted under the safety car, because his tyres were quite fresh – held second behind Whincup. But then McIntyre overshot a corner, losing several places. On the next safety-car rush hour in pit lane the car had to wait – more time down the drain. And then they copped a drive-through penalty because the car’s wheels had been spinning while it was up on the jacks. The Van Gisbergen-Youlden car had been running mostly in the top five but they had to make an

unscheduled pit stop because of a delaminated tyre. Meanwhile Baird enjoyed a brief spell in the lead when the team left him out during a safety-car period, and Murphy had advanced all the way to 10th and then even seventh. The safety car came out for the fourth time when Besnard spun Coulthard’s car and got stuck in the run-off area. McIntyre spun after taking a hit from Youlden in Van Gisbergen’s car. During the race each driver has to complete a minimum number of laps. Van Gisbergen’s team had made a mistake in their calculations and they realised that Youlden would be one short of that number if they stuck to their strategy. So they had to bring Van Gisbergen in to hand the car over to his co-driver for a time and the Falcon dropped down to 19th. Davison and McIntyre lost yet more time when the brakes failed as Davison approached the Chase – the fastest part of the circuit – and plunged off the track at very high speed. So the Kiwis were out of it as the race entered its final stage, with Whincup fending off David Reynolds in the FPR Bottle-O car. Reynolds looked a little faster but he could not find a way past the champion and finished second just three-tenths of a second away from victory. Lowndes was third. Van Gisbergen had the small consolation of setting the fastest lap in the race. “We had a fast car but we just weren’t able to do anything with it today, so I’m feeling a little disappointed,” he says. “It was just one of those days where we just kept getting pushed back and stuff kept going wrong, but this place is never easy. Luke did a great job all weekend.” “There’s not a lot I can do sitting here in the garage. It’s what this game is about and, unfortunately, neither of the endurance rounds has been good to us this year,” says Coulthard. “A 1,000km race is all about the last hour but you’ve got to get there. Unfortunately we got stuck in the gravel.” Finishing places for the Kiwis were: McLaughlin a fine sixth, Baird eighth, Richards 11th, Van Gisbergen 12th, Murphy 13th, Pither 14th, Gaunt 19th, Halliday 22nd, Coulthard 23rd, McIntyre 24th, and Reid 29th. reader reply 0121143

At least that is different John Coker provides an amusing insight into preparing a Skoda 130LR for historic special stage rallying. Anybody who builds a rear-engined Skoda for historic special stage rallying has got to be prepared for the corny old jokes and one-liners, and no doubt co-driver Mike Mack and I will hear plenty of them during the Epay Silver Fern Rally from November 11 to 17. Still I have recently detected a Czech change. I pulled up at a garage recently and heard some young guys comment, “Everybody is using Escorts, at least that is different.” The Silver Fern is only for Historic Rally cars – those first built before 1986. Two-wheel drive is in. Turbo 4WDs are not allowed. Many of us would consider the late 70s to mid 80s the halcyon days of the sport. The Silver Fern aims to recreate that. Why a Skoda? I rallied them at various times between 1975 and 1988 and had plenty of fun, even winning my class of the National Championship in 1982 in a 110L model. The running costs shouldn’t be too bad – certainly a lot cheaper than the BDA engine Escorts that make up the majority of the field. Our 60 horsepower should do 1050 kms of special stages on six tyres. Some of the BDAs will eat six tyres in a morning with their 260 horsepower. I found NR 461 in a barn south of Waiuku nearly two years ago. It was rust-free, which was a major consideration, but the motor had a blown head gasket. The rally build began. The shell was stripped bare and through 2011 all the interior and engine bay sound deadening was chipped out with a hammer and screwdriver. By the end of the year a comprehensive roll cage with extra bracing had been welded in by Race FX at Hampton Downs and the car had been to the panel beaters to have its a sunroof dispensed with. This required some “old school” panel beating skills from Papakura’s Alan Smith who had to roll a new panel in two directions to fit the hole and the contours of the roof.

Then it was off to the painters – Peter Jones at Ardmore – for the bright orange to replace the faded battleship blue-grey the car came with. This year has been spent fitting out the car with rally seats, the obligatory full harness belts and all the other details that are required for any rally car – under-body guards, fire extinguisher, extra instruments, relocating the battery from behind the rear seat area to under the front, side opening bonnet, where the spare wheel(s) and tools will also reside. We have stayed true to the era and used the old mechanical Halda Twinmaster for an accurate odometer, instead of any modern electronic trickery. The mechanical rebuild of the car was handled by

John Steward, another rally person. Some parts were contributed by Colin Waite, who had them left over from the immaculate rebuild of the 120S model that he used to compete in through the mid 70s. Yes, Skoda parts from the 70s still fit the last of the marque’s rear-engined models of the 80s! I have subsequently found New Zealand’s unofficial Skoda maestro – Vic Trunecek – who worked on the cars in his homeland before emigrating here 12 years ago. His detailed knowledge and experience has been invaluable. In an effort not to rush things, putting everything together took nine months and our debut did not occur until September’s Maramarua Rally after putting 500

kms on the new motor. Running it in was delayed when the petrol tank started leaking, requiring the engine and gearbox to be removed, as the tank sits above the gearbox under the rear seat area. Unfortunately the head gasket blew in the second stage. My fault, as I had not bled all the air locks out of the coolant lines properly. It is one of the few awkward bits of technology with a rear engine car and a front mounted radiator and heater core, resulting in four coolant pipes running the length of the car – lots of opportunities for something to go wrong. Vic has contributed a more modern eight port cylinder head motor to get us going again and the heater has been dispensed with apart from retaining the blower unit for some windscreen demisting capability. We are well prepared with a complete set of spare suspension, steering and brakes and five speed gearbox obtained from wreckers' yards and another Skoda enthusiast Peter Surman. Bruce Bruton supplied what was the only brand new windscreen for an 80s Skoda left in the country as the scratched one wouldn’t have passed a WOF. Our ambitions for the Silver Fern are modest. There are very few 1300 and 1600 cc class cars like ours. Most of the field are in rotary engined Mazdas and the flock of Fords. We want to complete every one of the 43 stages between the start in Auckland and the the finish in Hamilton a week later. If we can do that, we certainly won’t be last as the three previous events held in the south Island have resulted in a 25 percent retirement rate. The Aussies, Brits and Europeans in the field who have done the South Island events are in for a shock. The North Island’s back country roads are much more winding and twisty. It should be a great week and to quote the late Possum Bourne, “It’s the best fun you can have sitting down!” reader reply 0121144

International racer Chris van der Drift returned from Europe to join Aucklander Tim Edgell for the second round of the V8 SuperTourer Endurance series. The pair drove the Chesters-backed Holden Commodore at the Pukekohe 500k International, which saw the pair join together for the first time in a V8 sedan. Known for successfully racing single-

seater cars overseas, van der Drift had his first experience of a V8 SuperTourer in testing before the race. “Chris has recently started racing GT cars in Italy so he has some saloon experience, but he’s such a professional race car driver I knew he wouldn’t have any trouble adapting to our car,” says Edgell. Van der Drift, 26, has been domiciled in Europe since 2003 and has competed in Formula BMW, Formula Renault 2.0, World Series Renault 3.5, GP2 series, Superleague Formula and driven the New Zealand A1GP car. “I know Chris from my karting days, where he was a 12-times New Zealand champion, so I was confident he would be the right choice for this endurance round,” says Edgell. The Chesters Holden is the newest car in the inaugural V8 SuperTourer series, only making its debut at the first endurance round in Taupo in September. “We’ve got to know the car much better since our September debut at Taupo and after some ride days at Pukekohe recently I’m feeling much more comfortable with the car,”

says Edgell. With the Pukekohe track having the quickest lap time in the country, the margin between cars is likely to be extremely close when it comes to qualifying for grid positions. “It takes a fair bit of commitment to get the best time with the high-speed corners and lots of bumps on the track. I’ve had pole times and won races there in the past so I’m a lot more comfortable racing at Pukekohe than say Taupo,” said Edgell. Edgell and van der Drift drove under a new format for the Pukekohe 500k International. Since the Taupo round, the event organisers changed the qualifying format so that only one driver will post the qualifying time rather than combining the best times of both drivers from two sessions, as happened at Taupo. The Pukekohe event had a top-ten shootout to set the final grid positions. The drivers then started Race 2 from their finishing positions in the first race, with the final longer third race decided on accumulated points from the two preceding races. reader reply 0121145
