Welcome to the April issue of Motor Equipment News.

24 25 29 34 35 38 39

This month's issue is packed with news about tools and workshop equipment. A big vote of thanks to our equipment feature advertising clients, who contributed new product information and pictures. Despite the title of the magazine, MEN isn’t just about equipment. We also feature stories on parts and new technology and feature articles on how to run your business more efficiently and more effectively. You’ll find some interesting parts news from pages 4 to 12. The small workshop equipment feature runs from pages 21 to 24 and covers those smaller capital expenditure items such as compressors, high-pressure cleaners, vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbers, parts washers, trolley jacks and hose storage units. Investing in small and large capital items requires some thought and research so I hope you find this feature useful and informative. Our tyre equipment update can be found on page 25 and 26 with new products from George Stock

and Company as well as Repco. The Diesel Industry News section particularly focuses on new diesel injection technology which is currently being developed and launched by Delphi, as well as new engines from Iveco and MercedesBenz that meet the latest Euro emissions standards. Our motorsport section has Bernard Carpinter reporting on the two competing V8 motorsport series currently vying for an audience in New Zealand. While there has been considerable interest in the new breakaway V8Supertourer series and while the more established BNT NZV8s race series seems to have taken a back seat, there could yet be a renaissance for the Motorsport NZ-backed series. You can read more about this on page 36. Enjoy your reading.

Narva launches slimline trailer lamps

The Model 34 LED trailer lamps come in a new, slimline design.

Narva has redesigned its Model 34 and 36 lamps in a super slimline size to complement modern trailer, caravan and motor home designs and make them less vulnerable to damage. These new trailer lamps now have a depth of just 24mm and are available in New Zealand in 9-to-33V multi-voltage, making them suitable for a wide number of applications for recreational and business uses. These two slimline light trailer lamps come with a host of features that will make them even more

popular, according to Narva, due to their ease of mounting and suitability for applications where traditional lamps can be vulnerable to damage. Narva says they are ideal for boats, tradesmen’s and home trailers, campervans and caravans. The new 9-to-33V multi-voltage LED lamps include stop/ tail, direction indicator, plus a retro reflector and are supplied complete with stainless steel screws. The long-life LED’s are covered by Narva’s fiveyear warranty and the lamps come fully sealed against the ingress of dust and water with 0.5m

of hard-wired tinned cable fitted. The virtually unbreakable polycarbonate lens is another excellent feature of their design. The new Narva multi-voltage slimline Model 34 (Part No. 93432BL) and Model 36 (Part No. 93632BL) lamps are sold in protective blister packs with full graphics displaying their features and benefits and are available from leading automotive and caravan/motor home outlets throughout New Zealand. Cycles of improvement

It has long been a focus area left to auto electrical specialists and dedicated battery resellers. But now, as many workshops begin to see the benefits of diversifying their services, deep cycle batteries are becoming part of standard workshop floor stock. The SUV and medium-to-large four-wheel drive market is rapidly growing in both Australia and New Zealand, riding on the back of the penchant for recreational activities and weekends away. Many four-wheel drives leave the factory with the provision for a second battery in the engine bay, with the notion that owners will likely fit a 12-volt portable fridge, or a similar mobile device. Without

the alternator’s support, the current draw of these accessories is generally well beyond the limits of the traditional starting battery, as these were never intended to endure ongoing cycling. Certainly, the resilience of the modern starting battery has improved – particularly in recent years – but the demand for dedicated deep cycle programmes remains strong. Bosch says it has recently developed a new deep cycle program, the ‘D-Series’, which is dedicated to the local market and offers broad coverage of everything from small motive power systems such as golf carts, to the most dominant section of the market, designed to support recreational dual-battery applications found in four-wheel drives and RVs. Supported by the patented ‘full-frame’ technology, most D-Series batteries can withstand 300 to 400 charge and discharge cycles at a 60 percent discharge depth. The full-frame system is utilised in both positive and negative grids and maximises current transfer from all sides of the plate, reinforcing ongoing output. The greater stability in the grids also protects them from distortion, safeguarding battery performance for the long – term. At the top of the frame, and thus closest to the terminals, the D-Series grid design features

more connections; that is, more paths for rapid current transfer directly to the terminals. Due to the cross-hatched nature of the full-frame design, its tensile strength is also far greater than many competing designs, meaning resistance to plate expansion is very high, significantly reducing the risk of power shorts. With the introduction of D-Series, Bosch says it is now able to offer the optimal combination of starting and cycling battery products. When combined with the well-established S-Series range, Bosch has all recreational power demands covered, with superior starting and cycling ability available through two comprehensive product platforms. With new product merchandisers soon to be available, the entire range is an attractive prospect for workshops eager to capitalise on consumers’ demands for reliable power sources. When the next long weekend approaches, and SUV-owning customers book in their vehicles for a pre-holiday service, it is a great opportunity to explain the benefits of the entire Bosch batteries program. Many drivers are not even aware of the variations in battery systems, so a simple discussion about the benefits of deep cycle batteries for recreational use may create new sales opportunities for workshop business, reinforcing profitability. Timing is everything Dayco says it is the world’s largest OEM supplier of timing belts to European vehicle manufacturers. For New Zealand applications, Dayco says it now offers the most comprehensive range of complete timing belt kits to fit European vehicles in addition to the coverage for Japanese and Korean vehicles. Dayco says it has the full range to ensure that New Zealand automotive repairers have access to the highest-quality timing belt kits manufactured to full OEM specifications. This will cater for the increased number of European makes and models being driven on New Zealand roads, according to the company. The addition of European timing kits means the Dayco range exceeds 400 part numbers which covers more than 5000 different vehicle applications. This ensures that New Zealand automotive repairers have fast access to a complete range of timing belt kits that are only available from BNT outlets. Dayco says its range of timing belt kits includes everything that is needed for secure and reliable replacement of these important engine belts. The company says that it makes perfect sense to replace the integral components along with each timing belt, ensuring that repairers provide their customers with the best-quality solution.

This provides a win-win solution as the customer gains the best-quality OEM-equivalent replacement products, while providing increased labour earnings for the repairer. Dayco says its premier quality is reflected in the warranty offered for each aftermarket timing belt kit, which is identical to the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended replacement intervals. Dayco says its timing belts include the latest in technological advances to ensure strength, reliability and high performance. Dayco says its patented PTFE Teflon coating is a prime example of this. Timing belts featuring the PTFE Teflon coating can be found on most late-model European vehicles as original equipment. More than 90 percent of the Dayco range of timing belt kits are supplied with OEM manufactured tensioner and idler bearings which the company says is further testament to the superior quality of the timing kits. New Comet driving lamps

For more than 20 years, Hella says, the Comet name has been synonymous for quality, reliability and high performance auxiliary lighting. Hella says once again it has set the standard by releasing the highlyanticipated new Comet 450, 500 and 550 series halogen driving and fog lamps. Distinguished by ultra-modern crystal-clear reflectors, Hella says the Comet lamps add style and purpose to modern vehicles, whether battling the urban jungle or hard at work within the back blocks. Available in rectangular, oval and round options, Hella says the Comet lamps integrate seamlessly with modern headlamp designs, often enhancing a vehicle’s front-end appearance.

Designed and manufactured in Germany, Comet Free Form reflector technology delivers a sleek appearance and powerful lighting performance for excellent visibility in all weather. As high beam headlamps, Hella says the Comet lamps are the ideal supplement to standard high-beam lighting. Precise optical calculations of the reflector’s light distribution ensure improved vision and safety in low light, fog, rain or snowfall. Hella says the optical glass lens technology bonded to robust plastic housings provides a quality construction for a long service life. Proven solid mounting systems provide ease of installation and a variety of light angle options. REAdER REPly 020410

The cooling systems in today’s cars need to work harder to ensure the engine remains within normal operating temperature. A new car’s cooling system can effectively tackle the increases in internal and ambient temperatures and the subsequent higher pressure applied to its components. However, as a vehicle ages, these components gradually lose their ability to maintain pressure, regardless of how often the cooling system is flushed and the coolant renewed. In fact, it is good practice to replace cooling system components every four years. The function of the water pump is to circulate engine coolant through the cooling system. The water pump must be considered as the most essential part of the cooling system. As an engine is started and begins to warm up, coolant is circulated through the

engine by the water pump. If the water pump stops functioning, the entire cooling system will fail and may cause costly damage to the engine by overheating. Gates says its water pumps are manufactured in a company-owned facility incorporating the latest manufacturing technology and processes. Part of the manufacturing process includes a 100 percent leakage test for both the casting and assembled water pump. According to Gates, this provides customers the confidence and assurance that they are installing a quality water pump. Gates says it has continued to develop its water pump range and has added 13 additional part numbers to the range covering 24 applications. Applications now include the Toyota Camry, Holden Commodore and Mazda 6. REAdER REPly 020410A

Brake pads for active cruise control

Countering a market perception that OEM replacement pads must be fitted to vehicles equipped with active cruise control (ACC), Bendix Brakes application engineer, Tim Paton, sets out the facts. Active cruise control (ACC) is a driving aid fitted to some new cars, operating the accelerator and the brakes to maintain a distance from the car in front, whereas a conventional cruise control system only operates the accelerator to maintain a pre-set speed. According to Tim Paton, ACC places no more demands on the brake system than a conventional driver-operated brake, and so it does not require any

special consideration when selecting a replacement brake pad. “If we compare it with other driver aids, such as traction control, electronic stability control (ESC) and anti-lock braking systems (ABS) which also perform computer-controlled brake applications, these systems are all more sensitive to brake pad properties than ACC,” says Tim. “Extensive testing and years of field experience have shown that all of these systems function properly when the vehicle is fitted with quality non-genuine replacement brake pads,” he says. ACC systems may actuate the brakes to maintain a pre-set distance

from the car in front. They apply the brakes gently, and with much faster feedback adjustment than any human operator could ever do. If the brakes are more or less effective than what the system assumes, the system will detect that the car is decelerating more or less than expected, and will compensate by adjusting brake pressure – within milliseconds. By comparison, ABS, ESC and traction control. function in the same way, but under much more demanding conditions. ABS systems have to compensate and recalculate for differences in traction between tyre and road, far more than they have to compensate for differences in pad performance. ABS systems are very adaptable – they function with new tyres on tar roads, worn tyres on wet clay and even with one wheel on tar and one on ice, and the differences in pad friction are trivial in that context. When ABS is activated, the computer determines what brake effect is required, then calculates and commands a brake pressure that

would give that effect if the car was in the same perfect factory condition as the vehicles used to calibrate the computer. The system then monitors what actual brake effect it is getting, recalculates what pressure should be delivered, and commands it. Then it monitors what actual brake effect it’s getting, recalculates etc. – it’s iterative, and adjusts very quickly. The first calculation is based on the system’s calibration values taking the brake pad properties into account and from then on, it adjusts as required. Exactly the same applies to ACC. If the brake pads are non-standard, then the first pressure command will need to be corrected slightly when the feedback kicks in. The effect of fitting aftermarket pads to an ACC-equipped car is insignificant. As Tim Paton succinctly puts it, using a quality aftermarket pad such as Bendix is quite irrelevant in vehicles fitted with ACC and to suggest that only OEM pads must be fitted is a red herring. ZEV: Zero emission Volvo Robert Barry spends a pleasant time around the Auckland waterfront with Volvo Cars driving academy instructor Bengt Norberg in the new C30 Electric.

It’s not often we get an exclusive, but when we found out that Volvo Car Corporation had shipped in a C30 electric demonstration vehicle as part of its display at the Auckland leg of the Volvo Ocean Race, we were keen to see it and experience the driving character. More and more European and USA car manufacturers are taking the electric route, but sadly the barrier for the New Zealand consumer will be the initial purchase price. This could possibly explain why the C30 Electric was parked behind some large tents hidden away from public view during the Volvo Ocean Race visit to Auckland. Had I been the Volvo PR guy, I would have been making a big song and dance about this technological tour-de-force, but perhaps the modest Swedes are a bit more reticent? Fortunately for us, senior driving instructor Bengt Norberg from the Volvo Cars driving academy was more than happy to take the C30 Electric out for a fast yet quiet demonstration run around Wynyard Quarter. Not only does Bengt teach Volvo customers the art of economy driving and defensive driving, he also teaches diplomatic protection squads how to keep their passengers safe. Despite being a passenger in the C30 Electric, I felt perfectly safe as he negotiated the cobbled streets of Wynyard Quarter, dodging wayward pedestrians who couldn’t hear the car approaching and a tourist tram which also pulled straight out into our path. Because the C30 Electric makes very little external noise and has such powerful acceleration, pedestrians and motorists just aren’t aware of the car’s presence until the car is almost on top of them! However, Bengt assures me that Volvo Car Corporation is working on a creative solution to build in a “driving sound”. The C30 Electric is powered by an 82kW electric motor driving the front wheels and it produces 220Nm of torque from the moment the accelerator is pressed. It will achieve 0-100km/h sprint in 10.9 seconds and has a top speed of 130km/h, but all you will hear inside the cabin is

16

Next Holden generation secure

the muted sound of the four tyres. The interior is completely standard C30 fare with the exception of the stylish transmission selector which gives the driver the option of reverse gear and two driving modes. There is Highway mode which allows the car to coast along without engine braking to save power, and Drive mode which engages regenerative engine braking and puts energy back into the battery packs when using the transmission to slow the vehicle. Bengt says that by adjusting their driving style to use the engine as a brake to slow the vehicle down rather than the actual brakes, C30 Electric owners will quickly develop thrifty habits and extend their driving range. The car can be recharged from a regular household power socket, and a full recharge takes about seven hours. According to Volvo the operating range can be up to 150km when fully charged. The Volvo C30 Electric is built on the same assembly line as the other C30 models in Volvo’s Ghent factory in Belgium. Then the cars are transported to Gothenburg in Sweden for installation of the motor, batteries and other model-specific electronics. It weighs just 300kg more than the standard C30. The batteries are installed where the fuel tank normally sits and also in a special compartment in the car’s central tunnel. As a result, the space inside the luggage compartment is unchanged but the handling character is much better, according to Bengt. “This car is much more fun to drive around a winding country road than its petrol sibling thanks to the weight distribution of the batteries,” says Bengt Norberg. “I really enjoy driving this car – it’s just so much more fun to drive in than the standard car with a petrol or diesel internal combustion engine.” Currently more than 350 C30 Electric hatches have been built, and most are leased to customers in Europe, but there are also some vehicles being trialed in China, Japan and the USA. Sadly for Volvo drivers in right-hand drive markets, there are as yet no plans by Volvo to tool the C30 Electric for our markets. Instead we will more than likely see the diesel-electric hybrid V60 in 2013 or 2014.

Holden will build two allnew cars in Australia in the second half of this decade with the support of a $275 million co-investment package from the Australian, South Australian and Victorian Governments. Holden chairman and managing director Mike Devereux said the funding announcement would drive investment of more than $1 billion from Holden and help secure the future of the local car industry. “Co-investment of this kind is critical for our industry and helps Australia compete against other car-making countries that protect their industries through tariffs and/or financial support,” he said. “Holden will receive government co-investment of $275 million and directly invest well in excess of a billion dollars in the 10-year vehicle development and manufacturing program. “The investment will help Australia retain its capability to design, engineer and build cars with two all-new vehicles going into production at Elizabeth, South Australia, in the second half of this decade. “The two new Australian-made cars will be world-class. They will be underpinned by global architectures from within General Motors and bring new fuel-saving, connectivity and safety technologies to Holden’s portfolio,” he says. Holden is one of the most flexible automotive manufacturers in the world, producing 45 vehicle variants in the one plant, including small and large cars from Cruze to Caprice, for Australian and international markets. Mr Devereux said the Australian market was one the most fragmented and competitive in the world with 230 models on sale today compared to 144 in 1998 when large cars enjoyed their strongest sales. “Holden’s business model has been a great success in this competitive and challenging environment. Last year we sold more locally-made cars in Australia than any other manufacturer and nearly 60 percent of all Holdens sold in this country were built in Elizabeth, South Australia,” he said. “We are making the cars people want. Commodore and Cruze are top-five selling cars in Australia – so it’s clear we’re making small and large cars that meet the needs of both ends of the market. “Government investment has been instrumental in reshaping Holden’s manufacturing operations and has enabled us to build the Cruze small car in Australia, rather than import it. “It’s important that people understand the economic benefits that flow from this public investment. “Holden is delivering a very attractive return on investment. We estimate the current locally-built Cruze will generate more than a billion dollars of economic activity from Holden in Australia over the life of the programme,” says Mr Devereux.

Tools for the future JTC says it is the market leader in Taiwan, one of the toughest and most competitive markets in the world. A friendly family company that started business in 1981, JTC says in more than 30 years it has gained an unparalleled knowledge and understanding of the automotive industries requirements and demands. Its current product catalogue is the result of those more than 30 years of knowledge

and experience. In 1986, JTC introduced the tota clamp for body shops and then in 1991, the company increased its programme by introducing the JTC brand of dedicated tools for BMW, VW, Audi and Daimler Benz. Also in 1991, JTC added a range of air, electrical and hydraulic equipment and increased its range of general tools and wrenches. This new catalogue shows JTC's dedication to meet the

demands and requirements of the Asian, European and American automotive service and repair markets. It is company policy to meet and maintain the world wide demand for a comprehensive range of tools and equipment at competitive prices. As JTC Tools entered the second decade of the new millennium, it realised that technology in motor vehicles was moving faster than ever. This meant that mechanics and workshops were going to require tools and equipment updates earlier than ever before. Even now, in many cases, if they don't have the correct tools, they can't do the job, which means turning away work and losing customers, something that no one wants to do. The JTC team decided that it must help mechanics and workshops using JTC Tools to ensure this does not happen to them. It set about looking at what is needed now and what will be needed in the future. JTC says it doesn't have a crystal ball, but by dedicating resources to study the latest production vehicles, it will be able to produce the necessary tools needed when these vehicles do reach the aftermarket. JTC says that quality is expected as standard and it is committed to maintaining the top quality the company is known for. It is always looking for ways to improve the quality and life expectancy of its tool range, rather than reduce it to compete with the cheaper lower quality products that come and go on a regular basis. Should customers have a requirement or suggestion for a new or upgrade tool, then these may be email them to the dedicated team: tftf@jtc.com.tw and it will respond with an answer. The professional’s choice Building on the brand awareness established in New Zealand by Truck Stops, D.R. Britton Ltd has been appointed the national distributor for USA-based Cyclo Industries Inc and will carry its full range of professional strength chemical products for the automotive trade. Established in the USA more than 52 years ago, Cyclo Industries distributes its professional strength product range to automotive service providers in more than 92 countries across the globe. The Cyclo brand started out as a range of service chemicals, the first aerosol product being ‘Cyclo Carb Clean - Fast Gum Cutter’. The array of colours used in Cyclo packaging was introduced as a colour code for the professional user, so they could quickly reach for a product without having to read the label. The practice of using a product without reading the label is no longer recommended! The company says its unique point of difference from the other chemical manufacturers is that all its automotive formulations are made and tested in the USA to meet the demands of service professionals. The product range from Cyclo Industries is vast. It provides brake products, professional cleaners, lubricants and penetrants, antiseize, greases, diesel additives, petrol additives, maintenance and service fluids, fuel system cleaners, anti-corrosion products, battery products, speciality adhesives, epoxies, thread lockers, gasket makers, surface activators, retaining compounds, pipe sealants, elastomeric and silicone gasket makers, as well as hand cleaners, vehicle cleaning products, air fresheners and vehicle grooming products. Cyclo Industries technical director

Mike McGlynn, who is based in Florida, recently spent a week in New Zealand introducing the Cyclo range to D.R. Britton Ltd’s customers in Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. Prior to joining Cyclo Industries Inc, Mike McGlynn was a US Porsche Master Technician and a former crew chief and engineer for the Porsche factory GT3R and proto-type race team. During his presentation at D.R. Britton Ltd, Mike provided an interesting and

amusing insight into the incorrect use of brake and electrical cleaners and thread lockers amongst other products in a workshop situation. “There’s more to our products than just chemistry,” says Mike. “All Cyclo products have to pass through three quality assurance processes before they leave the production line and head to the warehouse. “We compete on quality, and will not compromise to compete on price, and we will not alter

or amend the chemistry of our products because of seasonal price fluctuations in raw materials such as the use of methanol or other ingredients used in the manufacture of our formulations,” he says. Cyclo Industries also provides easy-to-read guides for technicians to select the right lubricant for the application required, as well as matching OEM part numbers for its range of threadlockers, gasket makers and retaining compounds. iron pumps running at lower revs for quieter running and longer life. The 3HP / 2.2kW are the largest machines that can be run on the local 230 volt 50Hz power supply and these machines are fitted with a heavy earth pin 15 amp power plug. Tank sizes range up to 100 litres. Three models of 3-phase piston compressors from 5.5 to 10HP with single or two stage pumps mated to 270 litre air tanks are available and are best suited to automotive workshop applications according to Sulco. Top-of-the-range machines offered are the latest development from Fiac, Italy. Their all new Silver rotary screw compressors feature a new design air end made in Italy with dual cooling fans allowing a fast warm-up time of only three minutes. These quiet running machines are designed to run full-time and are the most efficient for users who demand a supply of continuous dry air at pressures to 10 Bar.

A Champion water blaster

Sulco Tools and Equipment says it has sold hundreds of the new Champion 6.5HP water blaster in NZ. Sulco says it has found this machine well suited to a wide range of applications in home and DIY as well as for use in workshops, where a light/medium-duty machine will meet the needs of mechanics to wash components and vehicles. The Model CPW3000N was developed by Champion Power Products in the USA where they are also sold through leading retailers. Champion water blasters are built in a new factory in Shoaxing China, a state-of-the-art facility that also makes generators and other Champion Power Products. The water blaster features an easystart 6.5HP 196CC OHV 4-stroke petrol engine. According to Sulco, the ceramic axial piston pump is from a reliable specialty high-pressure pump manufacturer and the maximum output pressure of 3000PSI is adjustable. Sulco says the water flow is 9.5 litres per minute and that the fuel tank holds 3.5 litres. The machine weighs 34kg and is supplied on robust frame with 300mm diameter wheels. The spadehandled lance is of streamlined design and easy to grip and the hose attached is 7.5 metres long. The machine is supplied with four quick-fit snap in spray ends for the Lance, and the machine can be used with or without detergent. At $675.50 plus gst, Sulco says this machine represents excellent value for money, and spare parts are usually available ex-stock. This machine can also be purchased from a number of dealers throughout NZ. REAdER REPly 020421

One stop shop

Only one family-owned global brand offers car dealerships and automotive services a one-stop shop for cleaning challenges they may face. Many in the automotive trade may be familiar with the Karcher brand of vacuum cleaners and high-pressure hot and cold cleaners, but with more than 75 years of product research and development the company has a complete cleaning solution offer for dealership and workshop premises. From scrubber driers to sweepers, high-pressure cleaners, parts cleaners and gantry car and truck wash systems there is a Karcher cleaning system, that will meet the needs of automotive sales and

service business. With nationally-based dealers and sales staff throughout New Zealand to advise and assist clients, Karcher says it provides the complete cleaning solution, including cleaning materials and spare parts and accessories. Karcher has developed its own highlyefficient and eco-friendly cleaning agents and chemicals for specific cleaning tasks. It says that using the cleaning agents shortens the cleaning process and saves water, energy and working hours. To create a great first impression, cleanliness starts outside the workshop and dealership, with a Karcher outdoor vacuum sweeper (picture 1) which is supplied with one side brush and one

roller brush. The filter and roller brush are easy to remove without any special tools required, allowing operates flexible on-site maintenance. Inside the workshop, a Karcher scrubber drier (picture 2) removes even the most stubborn dirt such as oil, grease, soot or tyre rubber from polished cement or tiled workshop floors. Features such as Karchers DOSE technology (demand orientated supply of detergent) ensure that the scrubber driers clean large floor areas efficiently without using more detergent than is necessary. Additionally Karcher’s mobile hot and cold high-pressure cleaners (picture

3) also remove stubborn dirt thanks to the high water pressure and are ideally suited for daily cleaning of large workshop areas as well as vehicles and engines. High-pressure cleaners are perfectly suited for removing stubborn dirt on all vehicle surfaces as well as cleaning wheel rims. Karcher says its self-service vacuums and spray extraction cleaners such as the Puzzi (picture 4) offer strong suction and reliable cleaning for vehicle interiors and upholstery because it removes dirt gently and thoroughly. Karcher says that upholstery fabrics will dry up to 63 percent faster than with comparable machines thanks to the Puzzi’s powerful suction turbine which leaves extremely low residual moisture during its operation. TYRE EQUIPMENT NEWS

Corghi leads the way The Corghi Monster AGTT is designed to handle a wide range of rims from cars through to large trucks and earth movers.

The days of swinging on heavy tyre levers to change tyres – especially big truck tyres – are on the way out, says Stocks Equipment. The trend in Europe and the USA in recent times has been towards leverless machines, which not only eliminates the physical strain of removing a tyre, but also reduces the risk of damage to expensive alloy rims. According to William Singleton, General Manager of STOCKS

The new Corghi Artiglio 500 is a second generation leverless tyres changer.

Equipment, a similar trend is starting to emerge in this country. “We’ve seen an increase in the popularity of our leverless Corghi models, such as the A2025LL and Artiglio 50 type machines over the past couple of years for passenger tyres,” he says. “That’s partly due to the increased number of run-flat tyres now on many used import cars, as well as some new vehicles, which are more

difficult to remove. Tyre shops find the leverless machines much easier to use and they also appreciate the fact that they do not damage alloy rims.” With Health and Safety requirements now uppermost in the minds of employers, the need to reduce risks of injury is especially strong among shops that do truck tyre business, where it can take strenuous efforts to swing a big, heavy lever, which can result in backstrain and injury. Much easier to let an automatic Corghi take the strain and avoid any possibility of legal action in the future, says Mr Singleton. Another trend that is affecting the tyre business is the continual upshift in the size of wheel rims, with more exotic cars wearing 24-inch-plus wheels these days, which are unable to be accommodated on older tyre changers. Mr Singleton says tyre workshop owners should be looking at these trends when appraising their equipment needs and making sure they future-proof their businesses. Among the new Corghi machines designed to accommodate larger wheel rims is the new Artiglio 500, which features a double bead breaker similar to the Artiglio 50, as well as the wheel lifter that takes the strain out of placing a wheel and tyre on the turntable. Corghi describes the Artiglio 500 as a second-generation leverless machine that is suited to work on a wide range of vehicle wheels, from cars and SUVs through to light trucks, with an ability to handle up to 32-inch rims. It’s an

evolution of the Artiglio 50, featuring a multi-function operating console, higher-performance wheel support plate clamping, reinforced structure, better ergonomics and control. It’s simple to use and Corghi says the Artiglio 500 can run at faster operating speeds without risks to the operator and the rims. Similarly, Corghi has been expanding its range of truck tyre machine that starts with the HD700, for rims of 14-inch to 26-inch, up to the Corghi Monster AGTT, the latest leverless model that can handle all types of wheels from cars, through to buses, trucks, tractors and earth movers. It can pick up wheels from the floor and automatically moves from one side of the wheel to the other, with the tool arm never coming into contact with the wheel rim. Stocks Equipment has already sold several Corghi Monster Leverless Truck Tyre Changers, with the YouTube link providing an excellent description of this machine’s capabilities – see www.youtube.com/ watch?v=nShoRV89hgg. Mr Singleton also advises workshop owners to look at the ‘whole of life’ operation of equipment like tyre changers and wheel balancers, and that includes buying a brand that has a reputation for reliability and service support. Corghi has been chosen by tyre stores in New Zealand including Bridgestone/ Firestone, Tony Tyres Service and Goodyear/ Beaurepaires to name a few. There are strong reasons why Corghi equipment is so widely trusted – it is Italian-made, with all the latest features, it is strong, reliable, beautifully constructed, built to last and has a full two-year parts and labour warranty backed up with support from Stocks Equipment, which has represented Corghi for nearly 25 years in this market. Stocks Equipment provides full backup service and spare parts, with Corghi factory-trained technicians. It has seven full-time service technicians operating from the Auckland Head Office, together with a nationwide network of service agents. Mr Singleton says no one ever regretted buying a Corghi machine. He adds, “They should last many, many years if well maintained and looked after – some Corghi machines are over 20 years old and still going strong and what is more we have the parts to back them up. Those are important considerations for anyone purchasing new equipment.” REAdER REPly 020425

Get a Boxer from Repco

Repco has recently reintroduced the Italian manufactured Boxer tyre changer range to the automotive service industry and says it has been very successfully received. According to Repco the Boxer units have several outstanding features, such as turntables with off-centre jaws which allow more inward travel than some other brands which use turntables with

centre-type jaws. Repco says the turntable of the Swing Pro and A 22-20 can clamp rims up to 20" from the outside. Whilst the A22–24 and Super LX 24 allow outside clamping up to 24" and the LX26 with 26" outside clamping and Assist Arms are designed for even the most stubborn low profile tyres or large heavy 4WD tyres. These features, along with the sacrificial plastic inserts in the demount foot and rim clamps make the Boxer tyre changers ideal for the professional user where light alloy and lacquered rims require outside clamping. According to Repco, the assist arm option will allow low-profile, large 4WD and runflat tyres to be handled safely and reduce the chance of damage to either tyre, rim or operator. Other features like a double-acting bead breaker cylinder with a plastic insert will prevent the cylinder from rusting inside if the water trap on the lubricator unit is not serviced properly. The tilt-back tyre changers are designed and built to withstand the extreme forces that are generated during the mount/demount operation, especially when changing low profile and runflat tyres. Repco says the vertical post of the Boxer tilt back models is designed in a way that a 12" (respective 14”) wide wheel can actually be dismounted. Repco says competitors often state in their specifications 12" or 15" wheel width but the design of the head does not allow the lower bead to be dismounted. All Boxer tyre changers come with plastic protection in the nose of the mounting head as standard. Repco says this is designed as a wearing/ sacrificial component and can easily be replaced. The tyre changers also come with plastic protection for the inner part of the jaws as standard. This is also a wearing/sacrificial component that can be easily replaced when worn. According to Repco this is a better option than damaging a customer's rim and/or tyre.

Gough Group to sell and service Cat trucks

The first Cat On-Highway Truck arrived in New Zealand during March. The Cat CT630, which was first launched in Australia, is a conventional prime mover and is suitable for on-highway tractors and rigid truck and trailer applications. Chief Executive of the Gough Group, Karl Smith has welcomed the opportunity to sell and service Cat on-highway trucks in New Zealand. “The Cat CT630, which uses the industryproven Cat C15 engine, will be of great interest to customers who know its reputation for fuel efficiency, reliability and durability. In addition the truck offers comfort, control and safety features which are well-suited to the needs of drivers and fleets” says Karl Smith. “Gough Group has an extensive history in the truck industry and are well positioned to take the Cat truck business to existing Cat engine customers, and prospective customers, who seek a reliable product that can be serviced throughout the North and South Islands”. “We have 18 outlets covering 95 percent of the New Zealand population base backed by convenient, 24-hour, 365-day service delivered via 240 qualified diesel technicians,” he says. Gough’s 18 branches nationwide all comply with Caterpillar’s high international standards for dealer

premises. The modern facilities are equipped with diagnostic, repair and test equipment to ensure the continued support for over 3000 Caterpillar Truck Engines operating throughout New Zealand. Managing director for Cat trucks in Australia and New Zealand, Bill Fulton, said that since the Australian launch there has been great interest from New Zealand. “The CT630 has received favourable reviews from Australian owner/drivers and fleet operators and has been engineered to cater for right-hand drive markets like Australia and New Zealand.” Fulton cited the CT630’s leadership in aerodynamic design as a key feature. “This product has been tested extensively in wind tunnels, and we are confident that it is the most aerodynamic tractor on the market. One important aerodynamic feature is the vehicle’s sloped hood, which increases visibility and decreases wind drag for improved fuel efficiency. “The combination of the truck’s light tare weight, coupled with the aerodynamic styling and the Cat C15 engine, delivers best-in-class fuel economy for customers,” he says. The Cat CT630 is also notable for its drivercentric design, which includes an array of features that enhance the driver’s comfort and control and the vehicle’s safety and reliability. Key driver-

centric features include: An ergonomically-designed control panel, which gives drivers complete command and control. An adjustable, air-suspended driver‘s seat, which delivers comfort all shift long. Premium design and materials, which dramatically reduce vibration and provide topquality sound insulation. A windshield that provides better visibility for safer driver manoeuvering. A lightweight bonnet, which enables the driver to tilt and conduct daily checks. The Cat C15 engine, which has a long track record in New Zealand, is rated up to 410kW (550hp) at 1,800 rpm and 2,500Nm (1,850 ft-lb) at 1,200 rpm. The Cat CT630 also comes with a Meritor RT-46-160 rear axle and a Hendrickson HAS460 suspension. The Eaton Fuller RTLO20918B transmission with 18-speed overdrive will be offered as standard, with the option of Ultrashift Plus for those operators who require the auto-shift version. The trucks were officially launched in Auckland, New Zealand in March followed by a nationwide 11 stop road show throughout the North and South Islands. JAC expands range

JAC has announced the introduction of a new model aimed at maximising productivity opportunities for operators brought about by changes to the driver licence regulations. From 1 April holders of a class one car licence are able to drive a truck up to 6000kg GVM, an increase from the previous limit of 4500kg. The new HFC1048 6.0T brings the JAC offering to four models, three of which can be driven on a car licence, covering a wide range of applications and needs ranging from 4500kg to 7999kg GVM. The range starts with the HFC1048 powered by a 2.8-litre Cummins ISF common rail turbo charged diesel engine mated to a ZF 5-speed manual transmission and is available in either 4500kg or the new 5999kg GVM rating. The range steps up to the HFC1061 powered by the larger 3.8-litre Cummins ISF common rail turbo charged diesel engine mated to a 6-speed JAC manual and is available in either 5999kg or 7995kg GVM ratings. WMC Group, the JAC distributor, says with two models rated at 5999kg customers now have a greater choice when it comes to selecting the right truck to suit specific applications and to take advantage of the increased payload available under the law change. The HFC1048 has a low tare weight due to the lighter 2.8 litre Cummins engine and standard wheelbase of 3308mm translating to an extra 400kg in payload capacity. The compact wheelbase and

short front overhang enhance manoeuvrability and ease of operation making it ideally suited to local around-town work. The 3.8 litre Cummins powered HFC1061 offers 25 percent more torque, a 3815mm wheelbase and is the only truck of its size on the NZ market to boast full air brakes enhancing safety, durability and performance. The HFC1061 is targeted firmly at tipper, construction, road works and heavier duty applications. According to Jason Pecotic, managing director of WMC Group, the range of JAC trucks has been specified to offer the best value proposition in the New Zealand light-duty truck market. “We believe that the combination of keen pricing, the assurance of an internationally-proven driveline and a low cost of ownership across the life of the vehicle makes the JAC range a serious alternative to the established Japanese brands,” says Jason Pecotic. He says the Cummins power not only gives JAC the credibility of an established internationally recognised engine manufacturer but also gives the light-duty range the power to match or beat comparable trucks from Japanese manufacturers. The Cummins ISF in both 2.8 and 3.8-litre form delivers tremendous fuel economy along with a low, flat torque curve making the JAC light-duty models extremely flexible and easy to drive, particularly in city traffic. Cummins’ efficiency allows it to employ a smaller cubic capacity and its excellent torque across the rev range means greatly reduced fuel consumption. All JAC light-duty models are equipped with

Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) emission control as opposed to EGR which is used by most opposition light-duty brands. SCR is more efficient and cleaner, enabling the Cummins engines to run cooler and more efficiently than EGR-equipped trucks. As well as running cooler and delivering better fuel economy, there are less restrictions as well as wear and tear on the engine with SCR compared to EGR. SCR also negates the time-consuming and frustrating need to stop the truck and clean the particulate filter when it reaches a certain contamination level. JAC or Jianghuai Automobile Co.Ltd was founded in 1964 and listed on the Shanghai Stock Exchange in 2001. It manufactures a full range of vehicles from light, medium and heavy-duty trucks to MPVs, SUVs, passenger cars and buses with annual capacity of 700,000 complete vehicles and 500,000 units of chassis. The company also manufactures engineering machinery, engines, gearboxes and other key components. JAC ships its vehicles to more than 100 countries throughout Europe, Asia, the Americas and the Middle East. It has undertaken extensive research and development and its use of international components ensures the ability to cope with tough conditions reliably. JAC says it is China’s most export focused commercial vehicle maker adopting a global outlook over the past decade with an international R&D network, integrating state-of-the-art design centres in Hefei, China along with Turin, Italy and Tokyo, Japan. Setting the standards

Emission standards to control carbon monoxide, nitrous oxides, particulates and hydrocarbons in tail-pipe exhaust emissions have been in place for the transport industry for many years. The next emission standard, ADR 80/04/ Euro 6 is earmarked for introduction in Australia in 2017, and will set new challenges for emission targets. Exhaust fumes are known to contribute to serious health conditions and have long been the subject of regulation. The four principle components of tail-pipe exhaust emissions - particulate matter (PM), nitrous oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrocarbons (HC) - are believed to contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular illnesses. In the late 1990s, the European

Union implemented the Euro 4 and 5 emission limits for trucks and buses, which came into effect by law in Europe in 2008. Euro 5 standards were adopted in Australia under the Australian Design Rule ADR 80/03 in 2011. The voluntary emissions standard beyond Euro 5 was initially introduced as the Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles (EEV) standard. The EEV standard forms the basis of Euro 6 which will be adopted in Europe in January 2013 for all new registered heavy commercial vehicles and buses. Industry associations in Australia want to have ADR 80/04(Euro 6) mandated for introduction in 2017. Currently there has been no date set for the introduction of the ADR 80/04 standard. The introduction of Euro 6 aims to reduce hydrocarbon emissions by more than 70 percent, nitrous oxides by 80 percent and particulates by 50 percent compared to the levels outlined in Euro 5. Also under the new

standard, the ammonia levels of diesel and gas engine exhausts will need to be less than 10 parts per million (ppm). One company that has responded quickly to the requirements of Euro 6 is IVECO. In conjunction with engine and transmission specialist Fiat Powertrain Technologies Industrial (FPT), IVECO has designed a range of engines to meet the more stringent regulations without the use of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). The groups Tector and Cursor engines are the first of their kind for the industry to incorporate a selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system combined with AdBlue dosing to control nitrous oxide emissions. The complete package is housed in a compact, fully-enclosed structure that does not impede on body building or chassis equipment mounting activities. The engines feature optimised combustion and after-treatment systems to maintain high fuel economy, lower operating temperature and extend the

operational life of the engine. “We were the first to announce our Euro 6 engine technology without the use of exhaust gas recirculation. EGR has its place, but not for vehicles that may exceed more than one million kilometres during the course of their life. FPT Industrial’s SCR technology and exhaust after-treatment fulfils this important need,” says Iveco CEO, Alfredo Altavilla. Companies must comply with the requirements of regulation and also meet end-user demand for industries to have minimal impact on the natural environment. The design approach displayed by companies like Iveco and FPT Industrial to comply with the requirements of Euro 6/ADR 80/04 means they are well placed to meet the emissions standards for Australia well ahead of time, while ensuring customer needs remain a priority. It also enables them to be seen as good corporate citizens as they benefit from reducing their carbon footprint through improved fuel economy andREAdER serviceability. REPly 020432

Delphi reveals latest technologies

Delphi remote pump common rail system

Delphi Automotive recently outlined developments in its advanced petrol and diesel fuel system technologies when it presented four technical papers during the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (I.Mech.E) fuel systems conference in London on March 14th and 15th. Delphi focused on techniques for reducing the cost of meeting tough emissions targets with particular reference to new control system architectures that deliver significantly improved performance and flexibility. The approach uses flexible software to allow improvements in emissions performance at a lower cost than alternative hardware-based strategies. “Our work is driven by the need to create greener vehicles that are

enjoyable to drive, using cost-effective technologies that provide the flexibility needed,” says Dephi powertrain systems president Steven Kiefer. “Fuel injection equipment is one of the enabling technologies that help vehicle manufacturers produce the type of cars that governments demand. It’s a growing market in which Delphi has considerable strength.” “Taking a fresh look at control architectures has allowed us to unlock new areas of innovation in almost every key area of diesel and petrol fuel systems,” says Delphi engineer Bruno Annycke. “Control innovation has had a fascinating impact on our hardware design, allowing us to implement new approaches that offer substantial and affordable improvements in emissions

without additional after treatment.” The first Delphi paper, “CO2 savings due to electronically controlled fuel pump in fuel delivery modules” explains how new brushless, electronically controlled diesel fuel pumps can reduce CO2 emissions by up to 3g/km. The new pump will enter production during 2013 as part of the next generation of fuel delivery modules that allow high and low output pumps in the same package and help facilitate lowcost implementations of stop-start. Delphi’s brushless pump will help reduce parasitic losses, improving fuel economy as well as contributing to reduced emissions. In the next paper, “Diesel common rail fuel system technology for high efficiency Ultralow Emissions medium-duty engines,” Delphi presented the steps taken to produce ultra-low emissions with good fuel economy from medium-duty diesel engines. The world market for medium-duty diesel engines has very specific requirements, demanding high levels of durability, efficiency and robustness. The paper analyses the critical differences between light-duty and mediumduty applications and discusses how this knowledge can identify appropriate areas of technology

transfer from Delphi’s light-duty systems. The paper then looks at the areas of innovation needed to meet the specific requirements of the medium duty market, including high levels of reliability over a significantly greater vehicle lifetime to keep the vehicles on the road, earning money for their operators. The paper also presents Delphi’s approach to engine management strategies that provide the company’s customers with the versatility to support a range of emission-reduction technologies, such as low- and high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation, diesel particulate filters and selective catalytic reduction. The last paper, “Ultra high pressure common rail: Evolution of 3-way solenoid valve injection control,” describes Delphi’s approach to the design of a high-pressure common rail system for medium and heavy duty diesel applications. The new system combines a flexible architecture with precise control of injection events up to 3,000 bar, achieved using a new concept in three-way valve technology that required further advances in manufacturing technology. The design provides the foundations for products that go beyond Euro 6 to ensure extremely competitive systems for future requirements. REAdER REPly 020432A

Volvo attempts World speed record

Boije Ovebrink has now set three ‘unofficial’ world records with his hybrid ‘Mean Green’

Mean Green, the world’s fastest hybrid truck, will attempt to reach speeds in excess of 260 km/h (165 mph) on April 27th at Wendover Airfield in Utah, USA, to try and beat its own world speed records set only last year by Mean Green’s driver, Boije Ovebrink. The Volvo-built hybrid currently holds speed records in the standing 500 metre, standing kilometre and flying kilometre international speed standards. “Technology and innovation are at the core of our business,” says Volvo Trucks North American president of sales and marketing Ron Huibers. “Mean Green is a prime example of Volvo’s technical capabilities and our continued focus on emerging technologies. Our engineers developed the world’s fastest hybrid truck utilising the same Volvo hybrid drive system powering hundreds of Volvo buses throughout the world – including London’s double-decker buses.” In building the Mean Green, which was revealed by Volvo Trucks at the Mid-America Trucking Show, Volvo’s team of hybrid technology experts adapted Volvo’s hybrid driveline to the chassis requirements of a world-class truck built for speed. Engineers then outfitted Mean Green with a highly-tuned Volvo D16 engine and a modified version of Volvo’s automated I-Shift gearbox, which interacts with the hybrid’s electric motor. “The result is a lightning-speed boost from startoff without any of the customary diesel-engine delay,” says Boije Ovebrink, ‘Mean Green’s owner and driver. “It’s like a champagne cork, but without the sound effects. For the first couple of seconds the truck just makes a slight whistle until the diesel engine, which runs on renewable liquid rosin

diesel, starts delivering with an explosive force.” In total, Mean Green pumps out a massive 2,100 horsepower ( and nearly 5,000 lb-ft (6779 Nm) of torque – of which 200 horsepower and 885 lb-ft (1200 Nm) of torque come from the electric motor. Aerodynamics also plays a vital role in achieving top speed, so Volvo designers selected a North American VN cab and sculpted the optimal aerodynamic shape for the truck. Mean Green features modified versions of the following Volvo production components:

• Volvo hybrid motor. • Volvo hybrid battery. • Volvo D16 diesel engine. • Volvo I-Shift automated manual transmission. • Volvo VN cab and frame. • Rear axle with 1.85:1 ratio. During its North American tour, Mean Green will also visit Truck World, in Toronto (April 19 to 21) and the Volvo Ocean Race when it reaches in Miami (May 17 to 20). REAdER REPly 020433

More than 40 years of Civic innovation For more than 40 years the Honda Civic has been raising the bar for small car owners in New Zealand, and the 2012 model is no exception. The length of the new Civic has reduced marginally, with the exterior width and height remaining the same as the outgoing model. Interior space has grown however, with 75mm additional shoulder room in the front, an extra 25mm rear leg room and a 4.3 percent increase in overall interior volume, resulting in an increase in space for all passengers. Wheelbase has reduced slightly and provides well developed, crisp handling. Civic has been awarded a five-star rating by ANCAP in recent testing. In addition to this rating, Honda conducts its own real-world crash testing and development at its two directional facilities. Through this testing, Honda has developed its unique advanced compatibility engineering (ACE) body structure to further optimise crash performance. ACE is designed to better meet opposing vehicles in a collision situation and better control energy than the traditional structure and this accommodates different sized vehicles at different heights. Crash energy is directed not only under the car, but also directs forces over the roof of the

vehicle to better dissipate the crash energy and away from the passenger protection zone. For the 2012 Civic hightensile steel is increased to 55 percent, from 50 percent, with a seven percent reduction is body weight. An appropriately rigid body also improves driving dynamics as there is less flex in cornering and

therefore better adherence to the intended path is achieved. Honda New Zealand says it is one of the few local distributors who makes panel and parts information freely available to the collision repair trade on its trade parts website: www.parts. honda.co.nz . According to Honda Head of

Marketing Graeme Meyer, once a collision repairer registers with the Honda Parts Direct website, they are able to access full details of all replacement panels and technical drawings for the repair and replacement of all Honda passenger vehicles including the new 2012 Civic. REAdER REPly 020434

Nissan deltawing project for Le Mans

Nissan has become a founding partner in the radical DeltaWing motorsport project. An advanced turbocharged 1.6-litre Nissan engine will power the DeltaWing car as it races for the first time at the Le Mans 24 Hours (16-17 June). While the Nissan DeltaWing will not be classified in the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours, the company will showcase pioneering technology that will be a potential direction for motorsport and will feed into the research and development of future technologies, that filter down to Nissan’s range of passenger vehicles. A race-prepared 1.6-litre 4-cylinder engine, featuring direct petrol injection and a turbocharger, will power Nissan DeltaWing, which is half the weight and has half the aerodynamic drag of a conventional racer. Nissan was invited into the DeltaWing family by the existing group of core partners – US-domiciled British designer Ben Bowlby, American motorsport entrepreneur Don Panoz, the All-American Racers organisation of former US Formula 1 driver Dan Gurney, Duncan Dayton’s two-time championshipwinning Highcroft Racing team and Michelin Tyres North America. The engine, badged DIG-T (Direct Injection

Gasoline – Turbocharged), is expected to produce around 300hp, sufficient to give Nissan DeltaWing lap times between LMP1 and LMP2 machines at Le Mans, despite having only half the power of those conventional prototypes. It features the same technology found in Nissan road cars, such as the Nissan Juke DIG-T. “As motor racing rulebooks have become tighter over time, racing cars look more and more similar and the technology used has had less and less relevance to road car development. Nissan DeltaWing aims to change that and we were an obvious choice to become part of the project,” says Nissan Motor Co-executive vice president Andy Palmer. “But this is just the start of our involvement. Nissan DeltaWing embodies a vast number of highlyinnovative ideas that we can learn from. At the same time, our engineering resources and commitment to fuel efficiency leadership via our PureDrive strategy will help develop DeltaWing into a testbed of innovation for Nissans.” Nissan DeltaWing concept originator and designer, Briton Ben Bowlby, says the engine is the right weight, has the right power and is phenomenally efficient. The Nissan DeltaWing is unlike any other racing

car currently on track. The driver sits well back in the car, almost over the rear axle and looks ahead down a long, narrow fuselage to narrow twin front tyres, specially created for the car by tyre partner Michelin. With a rear-mounted engine, the car has a strong rearward weight bias, which makes it highly manoeuvrable, while its light weight and slippery shape make it far more efficient. Its innovative design and forward-looking technology have encouraged the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), the organisers of the famous Le Mans 24 Hours, to invite the car to run in this year’s race from ‘Garage 56’, the spot in the pit lane reserved for experimental cars. As it doesn’t conform to any existing championship regulations, Nissan DeltaWing will not be eligible to challenge for silverware and will carry the race number ‘0’. The Nissan DeltaWing was built by Dan Gurney’s All American Racers organisation. The new car continues the California organisation’s legacy as a race car constructor which has included 157 different cars built – earning major victories in Formula 1, sportscars and the Indianapolis 500. The first two Nissan DeltaWing drivers to be confirmed are British racer Marino Franchitti and Nissan’s reigning FIA GT1 world champion Michael Krumm.

The V8 scene is changing fast…

Short dices with Bargwanna

Bernard Carpinter reports on the rival V8 series V8 war has broken out in New Zealand with two rival series both featuring Holden Commodores and Ford Falcons – though next season could see some different manufacturers entering the fray. One V8 series is an official MotorSport NZ championship, the new one is a breakaway group running its own series. The BNT New Zealand V8s Championship has been going for many years now and is officially New Zealand’s premier championship. It has been extremely successful, at its peak attracting fields of about 30 cars and spawning a Development Series as well. The Commodores and Falcons are modified road cars, which has always made it difficult to achieve equal performance – for example, the Falcon’s front suspension is quite different from the Commodore’s. The new series is called V8 SuperTourers and is headed by Mark Petch, long one of New Zealand’s most prominent team owners. These cars have a different mechanical concept – under the bodywork, they are all the same. They use a racestyle chassis developed in Australia and a sevenlitre engine based on a Chev Corvette unit, putting out about 550hp. So these cars all have identical performance; the only difference is the shape of the bodies, which use the original metal modified if necessary

36

www.motorequipmentnews.co.nz

to make it fit the chassis. The big engine is said to be lightly stressed, so that it should not need much maintenance. The V8 SuperTourers kicked off at Hampton Downs in February with 16 cars and star drivers including Greg Murphy, Steven Richards, Jonny Reid, Craig Baird, John McIntyre, Kayne Scott, Andy Booth and Paul Manuell. The meeting attracted a big crowd – organisers estimated it at 20,000. It was fitting that Kiwi hero Murphy should win the first two races and the round overall, but he had plenty of competition. Young Kiwi Ant Pedersen won the final race, after Murphy received a penalty for spinning Scott round. This series continues through the year with a total of seven rounds, the last three of them being endurance races where each car will need two drivers. A number of V8 Supercar drives are expected to come over for these meetings, probably including new star Shane Van Gisbergen. Meanwhile the NZ V8 field was down this season, partly because of the economy and partly because some teams had shifted over to the new series. The championship proved a triumph for amiable Aucklander Angus Fogg, who had been chasing the title since 2003 and had come agonisingly close to winning it more than once only to see it snatched away at the last minute. Fogg, who does almost all the mechanical work

on his Falcon, was fast and consistent through the first five rounds, winning three of them and building a big points lead before the final at Taupo in March. Still, he encountered stiff opposition from three other Ford drivers – Australian V8 Supercar driver (and Bathurst winner) Jason Bargwanna, and Aucklanders Tim Edgell and Martin Short. Bargwanna won the Teretonga round and Edgell the Manfeild round, while Short would have won

Fogg collides with Bargwanna

Bosch News at Teretonga but for a small error under very difficult circumstances in the last race. Indeed Short, 21, was the revelation of the series, mixing it with the big guns in only his second season. Things did not quite go according to plan for Fogg at Taupo. He qualified fastest but was only fifth in the top10 shootout, citing a brake problem. Bargwanna won pole but Short got a better start from the outside of the front row in race one, held on a damp track. Short went round the outside of the Australian at turn one and then had the inside line for the next corner. The youngster led all the way to post his first V8 victory, and a well deserved one too. “We saw the drizzle, took a gamble and put the full wet setup on the car,” Short said. “I’ve always been good in the rain, it’s just one of those things. And the team has a good setup for the wet.” Edgell also got past Bargwanna to take second, with Fogg a cautious fourth – but still getting enough points to get one hand on the trophy. His car had a full dry setup, and old wet-weather tyres. Race two started with the top 10 in reverse order on the grid. It produced another debut winner as Simon Evans – team-mate to Bargwanna in the Tulloch Motorsport outfit – passed early leader Simon Richards to grab the lead, and held it unchallenged to the flag. Richards proved very hard to pass and he took second, followed home by Edgell, Bargwanna and Holden driver Nick Ross from Cambridge. Short suffered a brake failure. Fogg crossed the line fifth but was demoted to seventh with a time penalty for hitting Bargwanna at turn one, causing the Australian to spin. Bargwanna was irate: “Foggy had a meltdown,” he said. “It’s not acceptable. I needed to win the race.” Fogg admitted causing the collision, saying he had had a brake problem. But he could still celebrate – he had clinched the title at last, with a race to spare. “It’s been a long time coming – too long, probably,” he said. Another collision marked the start of the final race of the season, as Edgell and Bargwanna tangled off the start line. Edgell went off and was last when he got back on the track. But he made an amazing comeback, passing a lot of cars and then emerging in the lead after the compulsory pit stops to change a wheel. “We passed three cars in the pits,” Edgell said, praising his pit crew. He also won the round. Bargwanna had led by eight seconds but a safetycar period bunched the field up and then he had a bad pit stop when a cloud of brake dust made it hard for his crew to change the wheel. His placings of third, fourth and second made him second for the round, ahead of Evans, and also second in the championship. Short and Fogg had contact and spun at turn one but they recovered to finish third and fourth respectively in the race. After receiving his trophy Fogg announced that he was switching to the V8 SuperTourers. Meanwhile the NZ V8s are preparing to fight back by launching their own new car, which will also

Fogg leads Bargwanna in the wet

have a race-style chassis shared by all competitors. This chassis has been designed and built in New Zealand, and was tested during the season in Falcon form with different drivers including Bargwanna giving feedback. Nine firm orders have already been placed for the new car, with more showing interest. Falcons in the new era will use the Ford Coyote engine and Commodores the Chev LS3. Both are lightweight, race-proven engines with electronic fuel injection. Apart from a dry-sump modification the engine packages will be ready to race. The Ford Coyote is a 5.0-litre, quad-cam unit while the Holden’s LS3 has a 6.2 litre displacement. Both can produce more than 450 hp and MotorSport NZ believes that their electronic engine management systems can be tuned to achieve parity of performance. Till now the preserve of the Falcons and

Commodores, the series is being opened up to other models – any large sedan that can be made to fit on the chassis. The most likely new entrant is Toyota, as two of the current NZ V8 teams have connections with Toyota dealerships. Their V8 engine could come from anywhere in the Toyota or Lexus ranges (Toyota owns Lexus) and again it would be controlled to produce competitive performance. V8 Supercars has already opened itself up to new entrants from next year, when it will also move to a common, race-style chassis. Nissan will join the championship, with its cars run by the Kelly team. V8 SuperTourers has taken the same step, with Petch suggesting Hyundai, Toyota or Nissan as possibilities. The V8 scene is certainly changing fast. REAdER REPly 020436
