Help Shape the Health of the Chippewa Valley: Take the Community Health Survey before September 24th
Everyone who lives and works in the Chippewa Valley is encouraged to take a short survey to help guide future community health improvements. Every three years, this survey is conducted to hear from community members about their top health priorities. The survey takes around 5 minutes to complete and is available in English, Hmong, and Spanish.
The survey is developed through a partnership with Chippewa County Department of Public Health, Dunn County Health Department, Eau Claire City-County Health Department, HSHS Sacred Heart Hospital, HSHS St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfeld Clinic Health System, Mayo Clinic Health System, United Way of Dunn County, and United Way of the Greater Chippewa Valley.
The survey is just the frst step in gathering opinions from the community. The partnership plans to hold several community conversations later this fall across all three counties to discuss survey results, talk about other health data, and ask people what factors contribute to health issues in our area. At the end of this process, a report called a Community Health Assessment will be released for each of the three counties. These reports will then be used to build Community Health Improvement Plans, which are used to work on solutions for the health issues that Chippewa Valley community members decide are the highest priorities.
To take the survey electronically, visit www.surveymonkey.com/r/CVsurvey2023 by September 24, or contact Alex Craker at the Eau Claire City-County Health Department by phone 715-271-9902 or email alex.craker@eauclairecounty.gov to get a paper copy.

Hispanic Heritage Month—September
Try this recipe which is a staple in many Hispanic homes to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Chorizo is available in most grocery stores in the refrigerated processed meat section. This recipe is also a great opportunity to use fresh late summer peppers and tomatoes.
Chorizo Eggs
Heat oil in a frying pan, add chorizo and cook through, stirring for about 5 minutes. Add chopped onion, sautéing in chorizo for about 3 minutes, then add peppers and tomatoes as desired. Let veggies sauté for another 3 minutes. Add beaten raw eggs to the frying pan until cooked still soft about 4 minutes. Remove from pan and garnish with cilantro or cheese. Serve immediately. Extra benefts for people on Medicare are being advertised widely via the internet, through apps like Facebook and other social media, TV ads and phone solicitation. This article will explain some of the extra benefts that come with Medicare Advantage plans and will debunk some myths about extra benefts such as the “Medicare flex card.”
Myth #1: Medicare Flex Cards are issued to all people on Medicare —FALSE
Medicare flex cards or beneft cards are not issued by Medicare and not connected to any government agency or government beneft.
Myth #2: I will get extra money every month if I sign up for this card or plan FALSE
Some Medicare Advantage plans offer beneft cards which sometimes give you a small amount of assistance toward groceries, utilities, and over the counter products, but many restrictions apply. For instance this card might only work at certain stores or for certain products. Additional benefts through Medicare Advantage plans in Eau Claire County offered this year are only between $50$120.00 per month on average (extra benefts for people on both Medicare and Medicaid can be even more misleading). There are many pros and cons to consider when joining a Medicare Advantage plan and the availability of these plans is County specifc. Please contact your local ADRC and talk with a beneft specialist for non-biased information.
Myth #3: Medicare Advantage Plans and Medicare Supplements are the same thing —FALSE
If you enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan, your health and drug coverage is processed through the Medicare Advantage Plan and you must continue to pay your Medicare premiums in addition to the plan premium. Medicare Advantage plans require you to stay within a net work of providers. They are required to follow Medicare guidelines, but sometimes require more prior authorizations than Original Medicare. They are allowed to offer extra benefts for vision, dental, gym memberships, over the counter allowance and additional beneft cards.
Medicare Supplements (Medigap) policies provide coverage that is secondary to Medicare. There are no networks with Medicare supplements and less out of pocket costs after plan premiums are paid. Coverage is based on Medicare guidelines, not the Medigap Policy.
Myth #4: Medicare Advantage Plan will always offer extra benefts FALSE
Medicare Advantage plans change every year and Medicare benefciaries must review their plans each year during open enrollment (October 15 - December 7). Medicare Advantage plans are allowed to change their plans each year. This may affect the network of providers you are allowed to use, the medications they will cover and rate, the pharmacy you can use, the extra benefts they offer and the regions where you can enroll into the plan.
In summary - if something is too good to be true, it probably is. Medicare Advantage plans are for-proft private insurance companies that want to sell you a product. Be a smart consumer and get all the facts before falling for tricky sales techniques.

Malnutrition vs. Food Insecurity-Are you Hungry for the Details?
Food insecurity is defned as a household-fnancial and social condition of limited or uncertain access to adequate food. In 2020, 13.8 million households were food insecure at some time during the year. Food insecurity does not necessarily cause hunger, but hunger is a possible outcome of food insecurity. Adults who are food insecure may be at an increased risk for a variety of negative health outcomes and health disparities. Healthy People 2030 provides additional information on Food insecurity at: Food Insecurity - Healthy People 2030 | health.gov
Malnutrition can mean undernutrition or overnutrition. It can also mean an imbalance of macronutrients, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, or micronutrients, vitamins and minerals. Undernutrition is what most people think of when they think of malnutrition. Undernutrition is a deficiency of nutrients. Simply put, it is a mismatch between the nutrients you need and the nutrients you get.
Senior hunger is a pressing issue in the United States. 5.5 million seniors (60 and up) and 3.8 million older adults (50-59) experienced food insecurity in 2021. For additional information published April 26, 2023 please visit: https://www.feedingamerica.org
Malnutrition Awareness Week, September 18-22, is an annual, multi-organizational campaign to rase awareness about malnutrition. The focus is to educate health care professionals on the early detection, prevention, and treatment of malnutrition for consumers to discuss their nutritional status with healthcare professionals.
Some signs of malnutrition can include:
-Always being angry or irritated
-Cold, papery, and thin skin
-Constantly tired
-Having a hard time focusing
-No appetite for food
-Being depressed
-Complaints of feeling cold
-Hair easily falls out
-Sleepy throughout the day
-Slow recovery from an illness or surgery
Aging plays a role in malnutrition with a decrease sense of taste and smell that leads to reduced appetite. Dental problems and poor oral health, medication side-effects, decreased mobility and not being able to prepare meals are contributing factors as well. Additionally depression, loneliness, poor fnances, and dementia which can all trigger malnutrition.
Malnutrition affects billions of people globally, it does not discriminate. During September 18-22 highlighting this allows people to recognize how harmful malnutrition can be. It also encourages people to pay attention to their nutrition and care more about getting help for people who need it.
Older adults malnutrition is a critical health and public safety issue up to 1 out of 2 older adults is either at risk or is malnourished. There are several community-based food and nutrition programs available to older adults intended to improve their dietary intake and food security. These programs are an essential part of the community-based social and health-care systems intended to allow older adults to remain independent. To learn more about the ADRC of Eau Claire County Meals on Wheels and community dining sites call 715-839-4735.

One challenge of caring for a loved one can be organizing their important documents. Keeping paperwork in order may seem overwhelming, especially if a system for sorting and organizing has not yet been put in place. But however unpleasant this job might seem it is a good idea to go through old records and determine whether it is time to fre up the shredder or hold on to the records a bit longer. Keeping this paperwork organized will make life easier moving forward. Below are general recommendations on how long certain documents should be stored.
Keep for Less than 1 Year
ATM, bank-deposit, and credit-card receipts until you reconcile them with your monthly statements. Once you've done that, shred the paper documents (to avoid ID theft) or securely trash electronic fles unless you need them to support your tax return. Insurance policies and investment statements until new ones arrive. Pay stubs to verify W-2 at the end of the year.
Keep for More than 1 Year
Loan documents (until the loan is paid off). Vehicle titles until you sell the vehicles. Investment purchase confrmations in stocks, bonds, mutual funds or anything else. Keep until you sell the investment so you can establish your cost basis and holding period. If that information appears on your annual statements, you can keep those instead.
Keep for 7 Years
Supporting tax documents (W-2, charitable donations receipts, etc.)
Keep Forever
Essential records such as birth and death certifcates, marriage licenses, divorce decrees, Social Security cards, and military discharge papers. Defned-beneft plan documents, estateplanning documents, life-insurance policies, and an inventory of your bank safe-deposit box. Annual tax returns.

Did you know?
• 1 in 4 older people have a fall each year.
• Wisconsin has the highest death rate due to older adult falls in the country.
• Every 11 seconds an older adult in the US is admitted to an emergency room for a fall.
• 1 out of 5 falls causes a serious injury. More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling and falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injuries.
There are steps you can take to reduce your risk of a fall!
That’s why the Wisconsin Institute for Healthy Aging in partnership with the Falls Free Wisconsin Coalition, has launched Falls Free® Wisconsin, a new web site that gives older adults and their families the information and tools to prevent a fall.
What You’ll Find at Falls Free Wisconsin
You will be provided with the steps, tools, and resources to help you stay safe and independent in your home. When you visit www.fallsfreewi.org take the Falls Free Check Up to determine your own risk of a fall and fnd out what increases your risk. Then, learn the steps to take to reduce risk. With videos, interactive quizzes, a home safety tour, handouts, helpful links and more. Falls Free Wisconsin is a one-stop shop for falls prevention in Wisconsin. Find balance and strength exercises (which are proven to reduce falls); learn how to keep your home safe by removing trip hazards, increasing lighting and adding safety features such as handrails or grab bars; and fnd out about falls prevention programs like Stepping On, which has been proven to reduce older adult falls by 31%.
You have a big role to play in reducing your risk of a fall. Your ADRC and Falls Free Wisconsin can help. Sign up for a Stepping On workshop; we have one starting on September 12th in Eau Claire. The ADRC of Eau Claire County and WIHA encourage you to visit www.fallsfreewi.org today!
