Currently the City of Eau Claire and Eau Claire County hold a contract with Abby Vans, Inc. to provide this service.
If you are needing transportation services outside of Eau Claire County, contact the ADRC for prior approval and fnancial assistance for these rides.
Once deemed eligible for Paratransit the consumer can contact Abby Vans directly to schedule transportation within Eau Claire County limits at least a full day in advance. Approval can be granted permanently or temporarily, such as following a Costsurgery.for paratransit service is $3.50 per one way ride. The City of Eau Claire and Eau Claire County subsidize the rest of the cost of the trip.
What is Paratransit?
Paratransit services are available to individuals whose disability prevents them from using the regular bus system, or those who are 60 years old or older and living in the rural parts of the County who do not have access to any transportation service.
There is an application process to determine eligibility. The sole determining factor is whether or not an individual has the ability to use the city bus lines. Having a disability does not necessarily qualify an individual for paratransit. Many people living with a disability ride the city buses every day. It is important when completing a paratransit application to make it clear how an individual’s disability or health condition prevents them from accessing or navigating the normal bus system.
It’s important to know that all 22 buses in the Eau Claire Transit feet are accessible. They are low foored, meaning there are no steps to negotiate. In fact, the buses are able to “kneel” close to the ground so that they are level with the curb. All buses have a wheelchair ramp that may be deployed. Even if an individual is not using a mobility device, the ramp will be deployed upon request. Each bus can accommodate two wheelchairs and/or scooters, and also have bike racks.
If you have more questions about paratransit, contact the ADRC at 715 839 4735 to learn more.
Applications are available from the ADRC or Eau Claire Transit @ 715 839 5111.

ADAPTIVE EQUIPMENT FEATURE: The Handybar Wouldn’t it be helpful to have an extra handle to grip when exiting a vehicle? What if that handle also had the ability to cut a seatbelt, or even break a window in an emergency? The Handybar by Avin, provides all of those functions in one easy to use tool.

I know several couples now, and hear about many more, who are clinging to the hope of staying in their house, trying to be each other’s caretaker. They are living among souvenirs, the accumulation of things that make up their life. Friends, family, and professional agencies help but life is difcult, sometimes brutal, and desperate, but they are home. They can’t drive, can barely walk, but all the old familiar things are still theirs and within reach. ’m not writing this to judge or advise, but to acknowledge our love of home. 13CARETAKER CORNER By Jim Alf Home is Where the Heart Is One dictionary defnition of home is, “the place in which one's domestic afections are centered.” It’s true, home is where the heart is. Home is where the door casing is marked with the heights of children as they grew. It is the place where joy and sorrow abode together. Home is where, when there is no other place, they have to take us in. Therefore, it is no surprise that when we grow old and feeble, we struggle to stay at that one place that has given us comfort, safety, and afection: our very own home. We will deprive ourselves, sufer indignities and adamantly lie about difculties to remain in our residence. And who can be blamed for doing so?

Falls are not a normal part of aging. You can keep on your feet and avoid the risk of a fall. Take steps to stay safe and independent longer.
One out of every fve falls causes an injury, such as broken bones or a head injury.
• More than 95% of hip fractures are caused by falling usually by falling sideways.
Falls are common and costly, especially among Americans age 65 and older. But falls are preventable and do not have to be an inevitable part of aging.
• Women fall more often than men and they account for three quarters of all hip fractures.
