ADRC Mission Statement
To help people age 60+ and adults living with disabilities secure needed services or benefts, live with dignity and security, and achieve maximum independence and quality of life.
Established in 1963, Older Americans Month (OAM) is celebrated every May. Led by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), OAM is a time for us to acknowledge the contributions and achievements of older Americans, highlight important trends, and strengthen our commitment to honoring our older citizens.
This year’s theme, Aging Unbound, offers an opportunity to explore a wide range of aging experiences and to promote the importance of enjoying independence and fulfllment by paving our own paths as we age.
This May, join us as we recognize the 60th anniversary of OAM and challenge the narrative on aging.
Here are some ways we can all participate in Aging Unbound:
· Embrace the opportunity to change. Find a new passion, go on an adventure, and push boundaries by not letting age defne your limits. Invite creativity and purpose into your life by trying new activities in your community to bring in more growth, joy, and energy.
· Explore the rewards of growing older. With age comes knowledge, which provides insight and confdence to understand and experience the world more deeply. Continue to grow that knowledge through reading, listening, classes, and creative activities.
· Stay engaged in your community. Everyone benefts when everyone is connected and involved. Stay active by volunteering, working, mentoring, participating in social clubs, and taking part in activities at your local senior center or elsewhere in the community.
· Form relationships. As an essential ingredient of well-being, relationships can enhance your quality of life by introducing new ideas and unique perspectives. Invest time with people to discover deeper connections with family, friends, and community members.

Eau Claire County Senior Nutrition Program Suggested Contribution Increase on May 1st, 2023
By Betsy Henck, Aging & ADRC Manager
Beginning May 1st 2023 the suggested contribution for senior dining meals and home delivered meals will increase to $5.00 per meal. L.E. Phillips Senior Center Evening Meal will increase to $6.00 per meal.
Our goal is always to fnd ways to reduce or maintain our costs without lowering the quality or nutritional value of our meals. Volunteers have continued to give their time helping our nutrition program and we work hard to keep cost down as much as possible. Keeping the costs down allows us to be able to serve the increasing senior population within Eau Claire County. Our average cost to prepare, serve, package and deliver is $8.80 per meal.
Our meals are partially funded through federal legislation called the Older Americans Act. This is very important legislation that specifcally says we cannot charge older adults over the age of 60 for their meals and must offer older adults an opportunity to contribute toward the cost of their meals. All contributions are voluntary and are kept confdential regardless of amount. Nobody will be denied meals if they are unable or choose not to contribute. You may contribute more or less than the suggested amount. Families may purchase gift meals or dining site tickets to help a loved one. Thirty-fve percent of the nutrition program revenues come from participant and community contributions, so they are very important to the sustainability of this program.
For more information about senior dining, home delivered meals, or the increase in suggested contribution, please contact Meals on Wheels at 715-839-4886.
Thank you for your support and understanding.

1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year and more than half of them did not receive any treatment. Stigma around mental illness is often a barrier for folks to get help. We seek help when our bodies are sick, why do we treat our brains any differently? There are resources in our community that can help!

Meals
The Meals on Wheels program is crucial to our homebound individuals in Eau Claire County and we rely on many volunteers to ensure timely delivery.
We are recruiting for volunteers who are willing to deliver on a regular basis, or to substitute as needed. There are convenient pick-up locations all around town with varied pick-up times for meals. No assembly required, only delivering a hot nutritious lunchtime meal to homebound individuals who need them! A fun and easy activity to do alone, or with co-workers, friends or family!
If you’re interested in learning more, contact Betsy Henck, ADRC Manager at Betsy.Henck@eauclairecou nty.gov or at 715-839-6259.
Together we help ensure no senior goes hungry and raised nearly $7,000 to put directly back into the Eau Claire County Meals on Wheels Program. The contributions given are what makes it possible to continue this crucial service for Eau Claire County.

Quinoa (pronounced Keen-wah) has stepped into the spotlight as being a “Superfood”. It is gluten-free and is a complete protein, which means it contains all the parts necessary for our nutritional needs making it an excellent food for vegetarians. Quinoa has many health benefts such as: it keeps your GI system healthy, it’s full of antioxidants, can help with relief of migraines, and helps maintain your weight.
Quinoa is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals (B-vitamins, Iron, & Magnesium to name a few). One cup of quinoa also provides at least 5 grams of fber. A few fun facts about quinoa is it has a natural covering called saponin that is a bitter resin to keep birds away. It’s also an ideal food for long-duration space flights by NASA. It also can thrive on as little as 3 to 4 inches of annual rainfall.
Quinoa cooks the same as rice: ½ cup quinoa to 1 cup of water, bring to a boil, reduce heat, cover and let simmer for 15 minutes. Try adding nuts, fruits & a splash of milk for a breakfast porridge, or replace your rice next time you make a dish served over rice.

Watch Out for Health Fraud Scams
BytheGWAARLegalServicesTeam(forreprint)
Health fraud has been around for centuries. These scams involve selling drugs, devices, foods, or skincare products with claims that they will help with common health issues, like weight loss, memory loss, or joint pain. Unfortunately, these products usually don’t work as advertised, and at worst, they’re dangerous. Read on to learn about some common types of health fraud scams.
· Miracle Cures
These ads will often use testimonials from patients or medical providers who say that you’ll get “miraculous results.” Spoiler alert: you won’t. Remember that success stories like these are easy to make up, and reviews you read on social media may be fake.
Quick Fixes
Watch out for ads that promise results in “30 days or your money back” or other unrealistic timelines. Remember that few conditions can be treated quickly, even with proven treatments.
“Ancient Remedies” and “All Natural” Cures
These words are used to try to make you believe that products are safer or have a longer track record than more mainstream treatments. Don’t be fooled by these descriptions. Remember that some ancient civilizations believed that drinking mercury would increase a person’s lifespan. (We now know that exposure to mercury can have serious effects, ranging from headaches and tremors to death.) In addition, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has found many products advertised as “all natural” treatments that actually contain high doses of prescription drug ingredients.
· Scientific Breakthroughs
These ads use words that sound scientific or refer to prestigious awards. Some examples include “Nobel Prize-winning technology,” or “Extreme Thermogenic Formula.” Sometimes ads will mischaracterize research studies and draw conclusions that the researchers themselves didn’t make.
Before purchasing a product you’ve seen advertised, talk to your doctor or other health care professional. Ask whether the product works and whether there is any scientific research that supports the advertisers’ claims. If you are taking any supplements or prescription drugs, ask whether using the product will lead to any harmful interactions. If the product is safe to use, ask how much you should take and whether there are any side effects you should know about.
You can also do some research on your own. Search for the name of the product online with the words “reviews,” “complaints,” or “scam.” If the ad mentions any scientific studies, look up the researchers and whether the studies were published in a scientific journal.
If you think you’ve found a scam, consider reporting it to the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. The FTC and law enforcement agencies use these reports to stop scammers. If you experience side effects or illness related to a health care product, seek medical help immediately.
You can report it later on the FDA’s MedWatch website.

VEHICLE MODIFICATION GRANT AVAILABLE
Do you have a vehicle that needs modifications for accessibility?
The Vehicle Modification Grant has money available, up to $5,000, to make a vehicle accessible for caregivers, adults 60 and over, or adults living with a disability. This may also help with the purchase of a new/used modified vehicle.
Applications are reviewed and granted based on funding availability. Must be an Eau Claire County Resident to qualify.
Examples of possible modifications: lifts, ramps, left foot accelerator, right hand turn signal, modified-effort steering, swivel seat…and so much more!
Contact the ADRC at 715-839-4735, we may be able to help pay for those modifications.
