ADRC Mission Statement

To advocate for individuals age 60+ and adults living with disabilites, and assist them in securing needed services or benefts, live with dignity and security, and achieve maximum independence and quality of life.

Ever wonder hmm….is this a scam? You are not alone. Scammers are getting more creative in their efforts to trick people. It doesn’t matter who or how old a person is, it is easy to succumb to their tactics. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to protect information, money and assets from scammers.

• Register your phone number on the Wisconsin Do Not Call Registry. Call toll-free from the phone number you wish to register 1-888-382-1222 (tty: 1-866-290-4236). If your phone is listed on the Do Not Call Registry it will also include text messages.

• Don’t click links in unexpected texts or emails. For example: receiving a text or email from your bank that says your account has suspicious activity, “click here to learn more.” Instead, call your bank directly to verify if they actually had been trying to contact you. Remember your bank will not ask you for usernames or passwords.

• Social Security reports that scammers are sending texts that warn recipients there is an issue with their Social Security number and to call a supplied phone number. Social Security will not send texts asking for return calls to an unknown number.

• Eau Claire County, Register of Deeds offers Property Fraud Alert, a free online service that can help protect against Home Title Theft. Scammers use your personal data to fle a fake deed transfer into the public records system—illegally taking ownership of your property. Go to https:// www.propertyfraudalert.com/WIEauClaire to sign up for alerts.

What to do if you think you have been scammed?

Call the Wisconsin Department of Consumer Protection at 800-422-7128; they are ready to provide resources and answer questions, and may be able to assist if money or data has been lost.

Need a Seat?

With so many summer activities going on such as fairs and farmers markets, it can be a concern for many on how far they need to walk before a chance to rest a bit - a Chair Cane can be just what is needed.

This easy to use mobility device is sure to be a conversation starter and those who never thought they wanted or needed a cane will be wanting one too. Sit anytime and anywhere with this cane. With a Chair Cane standing in long lines, or going for a leisurely stroll can be much more comfortable when legs get a little tired.

Chair Canes are sturdy walking canes that easily fold out to provide a seat to rest. The canes generally weigh about 1.5 lbs. and function just like any other cane. There are various sizes available through many on-line retailers, that can accommodate different user weights and heights.

To try a Chair Cane and see if it will work for you the Aging and Disability Resource Center (ADRC) has one that can be loaned out for up to three months with a small fee. The ADRC has this and many more mobility and home safety items for demonstration and to loan for a short period. For a complete list of items go to this website Adaptive Equipment Loan Program | Eau Claire County or call the ADRC offce for more information.

Vitamin D and Calcium work together to support healthy bones and muscles, as we age. These two work together to help keep our bones strong, as Vitamin D promotes the absorption of Calcium in our bodies. Women over age 50 should have 1,200 milligrams and men over 50 should have 1,000 milligrams of Calcium a day. Be sure to ask your doctor for personalized recommendation.

Salmon Patties: Makes 4 Patties/4 Servings

Ingredients:

1 can (14.5 oz) Salmon with bones, drained

1 slice of bread, torn into small pieces

1 Tbl Mayonnaise

1 Tbl Lemon Juice

1 Egg, slightly beaten,

1/2 C Minced Celery

1/2 C Minced Carrot

Salmon Patties provide 12mcg of Vitamin D and 249mg of Calcium per 170 calorie serving

In bowl mix all ingredients, form about 1/2 C of mixture into a 1” thick patty, lightly spray skillet and heat patties over medium heat for about 5 to 7 minutes per side.

Medicare to Cover Wegovy

The federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently approved the drug Wegovy for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease in people clinically diagnosed with obesity. The FDA approval means that the drug can now be covered under Medicare for people diagnosed with both obesity and cardiovascular disease. About one in four people diagnosed with obesity also have a diagnosis of cardiovascular disease, so the approval could make Wegovy available to some 900,000 Medicare beneficiaries, or about seven percent of the total Medicare population. Another 1.9 million Medicare participants may already have been eligible for coverage of Wegovy due to a diagnosis of diabetes. Wegovy is one of a class of drugs known as semaglutides that have previously been approved by the FDA for treatment of obesity and diabetes. However, since 2003, federal law has prohibited Medicare from covering medications prescribed exclusively for weight loss. With the new FDA approval, at least a portion of Medicare participants may be able to benefit from the drug, though out of pocket costs are expected to range between $325 and $430 per year

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, is one of the oldest known celebrations commemorating the ending of slavery and enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in the United States.

In June 1865, in Galveston, Texas, federal troops arrived and US General Gordon Granger read General Orders No. 3 “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with the proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free.” Two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed by President Lincoln and 2 months after the end of the Civil War. Texas was the last state where the news of the end of slavery reached African Americans enslaved there. Texas also became the first official state in 1979 to recognize Juneteenth as a state holiday.

Opal Lee, a retired teacher spent decades advocating for Juneteenth to be recognized as a national holiday. In 2021 Junteenth became a federal holiday. And in May 2024, President Joe Biden presented 96 year old Opal Lee, with the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
