Letter from the 2025 Chamber Board President

Fellow Members,

I’d like to take this opportunity to look back at our Chamber and during my involvement. About me, I was born and raised in Coatesville, and proudly still run my family’s 50-year-old business in Sadsburyville known as “Harry’s.” Although my family and I have expanded into several different businesses, including real estate development, we still cherish our community and friends, and serve them hands-on, every day.

Personally, I have had a unique relationship with this Chamber, which happens to be the oldest chamber in Chester County. I reminisce about the Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce, where I joined the Board as a young businessman in 1999 and sat around the table with a half-dozen other members discussing our dwindled membership of less than 100 members and debating whether we should continue forward or vote to dissolve the Chamber. At the time we had exactly one scheduled event each year; our Annual Dinner. Fortunately, a few others and I spearheaded a movement deciding to do the opposite – we vowed to revitalize the Chamber since we expected growth in our region. The County was primed to grow west, and we felt the Chamber needed to be the voice and vehicle to represent our existing community and businesses and prime ourselves for the future. We re-branded with a new logo, created a mission statement, organized new events, and began forging ahead, thanks to a lifesaving $10,000 grant from the Stewart Huston Charitable Trust.

was the climax of our revitalization efforts. We celebrated the achievements of this region’s brilliant businesses and members. Sure enough, as soon as we thought we reached our pinnacle, along came Rachel Cathell and her team of Ashley Pierce and Morgan Swindler. Over the last few years, they have helped our Board of Directors achieve goals that we could never have dreamed of in 1999.

Currently, I can proudly say that we are over 400 members strong and growing, we have 23 Board Members and five committees, we host over 35 events each year, we award two scholarships and have clearly become a force in the Region representing our businesses and non-profits. I sincerely thank all our Previous President’s for their superior leadership and hard work in guiding us to these levels of achievement. I will forever Praise the Past of this historic Chamber.

Now, it is with great honor and appreciation that I guide our Chamber yet again this year, as the first member to serve as President for the third time in our profound history. This year, I intend to guide our Board of Directors and our Membership to “Praise the Past… Forge the Future.”

Our membership grew, and I proudly served as President in 2006. We recruited new board members, created committees, attracted sponsors, and the Chamber began to thrive. Countless members became involved, volunteered countless hours, and worked extremely hard to help our Chamber succeed. We hired an excellent employee that carried our torch for two decades, Donna Steltz, who helped us achieve new heights. Membership thrived and our organization was gaining popularity and relevance within our region, once again.

Then, in 2016, I was honored to be asked to serve as President again for a second term on our 100th Anniversary. That year was legendary, and to me, this

I expect this year to be more successful than ever. This year, we will be updating our Strategic Plan, whereby I expect this gifted Board of Directors and Staff that we have serving us to take us to the next level. The scheduled events and programs for this year are sure to be better than ever. We have already hosted our County’s Commissioners with a sold-out attendance in January, then we had a huge turn-out for our Membership Extravaganza in February where we attracted several new members, while proudly awarding our 2nd Annual Small Business of the Year Award to this year’s recipient – Fling’s Towing.

So, where do we go from here? To me, chasing the answer is the best part. Let’s innovate, let’s rejuvenate, let’s grow with social media, let’s adapt to “AI”, let’s reach new heights that we’ve never imagined… again… Let’s Forge our Future … I look forward to discussing our Past and Future with all of you at an upcoming event! Stay tuned for what’s ahead!

Warm Regards, John H. Lymberis

Tailored growth in a region with a changing landscape.

We live here. We work here. We raise our families here. Which means then, it is our responsibility to shape what tomorrow looks like in ChescoWest. Our landscape is changing, new things arise alongside efforts to preserve the heritage that shaped our towns. Growth can be a scary word, especially to some of us that love a regular stop at a tiny produce stand on a winding back road or the familiar faces we pass at the neighborhood park. But growth doesn’t have to be scary, if it’s a growth guided by our residents wants and needs and unique to our undeniable character in western Chester County.

Growth means to increase. So, what do we want to increase? Our quality of life, educational offerings, opportunity in business, community engagement, health options, the list can go on and on. The things that shape what our future looks like, come out of public community platforms. These type of platforms encourage and

invite the public to contribute. What is most important to you? Tell your Chamber. Tell your municipality. Be a part of conversation for tomorrow.

What’s Happening Across the Region

Honey Brook Borough is gearing up to start a Streetscape project from 2nd to 4th Avenue, beginning in 2025 this will bring new improved sidewalks and decorative lighting to the borough. Next door to the borough, Honey Brook Township is underway on the planning of James A. Umble Park by starting up their Park Master Plan Committee to work on this exciting transformation project set to bring a reimagined public space to the Township. Caln Township is working on pedestrian safety projects, roadway lighting and public transit amenities along business 30. The City of Coatesville will also start a streetscape project in Spring of 2025 by renovating the sidewalks in the downtown business district in anticipation of the Train Station opening.

Chamber Update

Residential developments continue to crop up across the region. In East Brandywine two projects are in final approval, Ryan Homes’ Brandywine Walk, which is an age-qualified community and Toll Brothers development called Stone Mill Village. In Coatesville, the Brandywine View Apartments project is set to break ground north of the new train station marking the highest volume of new market rate residential development in the city in quite a long time. Development approvements have also begun at Westwood Ridge off Valley Road adding 89 single family homes while to our east, Caln Township expects 175 units in the Hills of Thorndale Woods.

Wallace Township continues their conservation efforts, reaching 520 acres of open space conserved, including trails and recreation areas. This year, East Brandywine Township’s open space committee closed on 14.6 acres of land near the east branch of the

Brandywine adding to their township’s total preserved land of 2,044 acres. The Lincoln Highway Stormwater project in Valley Township is currently in design phases and to date Caln Township has invested $4.5 million on stormwater improvements with an additional $3.5 million planned for 2025.

The Alliance for Health Equity announced that Union Community Care has been selected to operate at the Brandywine Center in Coatesville beginning in July 2025. This will bring accessible, inclusive, integrated healthcare services to meet the evolving needs of the Greater Coatesville community. You can learn more at alliancehealthequity.org.

The new year brought the announcement of the restructuring of the County Government’s top administrative positions by naming David Byerman as Chief Executive Officer and Erik Walschburger as Chief Operating Officer. The beginning of the year also welcomed the appointment of Matthew Edmond as the new Chester County Planning Commission Executive Director.

As the weather breaks, the warm months will bring many celebrations to our region: Little yellow ducks will race down the Brandywine at the Duck Derby in the Borough of Modena on May 31st, Final Fridays will start back up in May in Parkesburg, First Fridays will kick off in June in the City of Coatesville, and the OABest Festival at Octorara High School is set for May 17th. Ignite Your Comfort with The Stove Shop

Helping you stay warm while also saving money – that is the mission of The Stove Shop Fireplace Experts.

Ted Ryan opened The Stove Shop in Phoenixville in 1977, when the country was in the midst of the oil crisis and when people were turning to fireplaces and stoves to supplement their heating systems.

At that time, the top-of-the-line in wood stoves was Vermont Castings. The demand for their stoves was high, and Ted persuaded the company to let him be their first dealer in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, or Delaware to sell their products.

Ted’s son Bill came into the business early on, providing hands-on service, and now his son, Patrick Ryan, is leading the three-generation family business. The Stove Shop Fireplace Experts is the place to go for expert information, high-quality products and experienced installation.

“It was a part of the DIY movement. He helped people do that in this community,” Patrick said. “My contribution has been to help to build the team. My goal is to be the best hearth shop in the country.”

One of the company’s goals is to help you find the

product that is right for your home and your family. The core values of safety, integrity, and community guide the company in every decision.

Over time, technology has changed and so have stoves and fireplace inserts. Patrick explains that the original stove movement was fueled with wood but that could be messy and required careful tending. Pellet stoves reduced the mess and made it easier to use a stove. Both wood burning and pellet stoves are still available, but the majority of customers opt for the clean option of gas, especially if natural gas is available.

It is important to Patrick and all of The Stove Store team that you find the right option for you, choosing from a selection

of high-quality fireplaces and stoves that combine beauty, efficiency, and safety. The product they will recommend for you will depend on your goals and the layout of your home.

The Stove Shop’s expert team works with you through every step of the process, from the initial consultation in the historic Chester County showroom to on-site visits, installation, and maintenance. With over 100 years of collective expertise, they ensure your project is seamless, safe, and rewarding.

The Stove Shop serves an area of roughly 15 miles around Phoenixville. They provide a comprehensive range of services from installing a new unit, doing regular maintenance, or helping you with information and advice.

The philosophy behind using a stove or fireplace insert is to heat your home more where you need it most, while maintaining the rest of the home at a cooler level.

Patrick advises that depending on the unit you choose, the cost could be $5,000 to $10,000, but you will see that investment recouped in three to four years of energy savings.

As a bonus, you get the ambiance of a wood-burning fireplace or stove. Patrick explained that even if your home does not have a built-in masonry fireplace and chimney, there are options available.

“If you have a flat, open wall, we can frame out that wall and put in a gas fireplace,” he said.

For more information, visit the website at fireplaceexperts. com or call 610-935-9334. You can browse fireplace and stove options online or stop in the shop at 20 E. Pothouse Road in Phoenixville to see the products in person and ask questions. Business hours are Tuesdays through Fridays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Building Strength Together

Chester County Economic Development Council Propels the Business Community Forward

Chester County Economic Development Council (CCEDC) was founded around 1960 by a group of local businessmen. It was created to develop business properly; in a way that was conducive to maintaining the sense of place within Chester County.

Currently, CCEDC employs over 43 people. The organization is a private, not-for-profit, non-governmental entity that is run by a Board of businessmen and women.

Chester County Economic Development Council supports local businesses in four key areas: financing solutions, location services, workforce development, and innovation and entrepreneurship.

Throughout their long history, CCEDC has closed over

$2 billion in loans utilizing federal, state, and local loan programs. CCEDC experts construct personalized loan packages for clients, as well as match them to appropriate funding programs.

For businesses who are interested in relocating to Chester County, CCEDC is there. Part of their mission is to market Chester County to businesses, striving to grow our economic reach and drive the growth of retention of employers and their employees.

Chester County Economic Development Council prioritized workforce development. The organization and its volunteers engage local employers, enhance employer competitiveness, facilitate learning for a skilled workforce, connect people to careers, and develop youth for tomorrow’s jobs.

CCEDC partners with i2n (Ideas x Innovation Network) to bolster the entrepreneurial spirit across the county. These startup companies gain access to the resources, knowledge, and funding that’s needed to become successful.

Targeted support is another pillar of CCEDC. Through their industry partnerships, the organization can identify key drivers of our local economy and help these industries prosper.

“We assist businesses in healthcare fields, agriculture, manufacturing, innovation technology, and we provide resources for them to have training for their employees at a discounted cost.” said Chris McHenry, Vice President of Development Finance.

One of their programs focuses on middle and high school aged girls that have an interest and want to get involved in STEM, as women are severely underrepresented in those fields.

The CCEDC Business Resource Center recently opened its doors in Coatesville, located right on Lincoln Highway.

“We opened up this center to be able to provide a closer outreach to businesses in the Coatesville area.” said Darlene Jenkins Walls, Manager of Entrepreneurial Outreach & Support.

Business owners can come into the center, ask questions about training, funding, advice, and more.

A support network is essential to early-stage businesses.

“Small businesses owners used to not have a seat at the table and the goal is ultimately to grow our community. Small businesses are the first ones to hire within the community and advocate for the local region.” Jenkins Walls said.

Through their Catalyst Fund, “disadvantaged borrow-

ers,” such as those which are minority owned, women owned, or located in low-income areas, can access funding and share their dream of owning a business.

“We’re reaching borrowers that, for the most part, traditionally could not go to a bank and get these kinds of commercial or business loans.” said McHenry. “They are more early stage, they may have had credit issues in the past, there may be a lack of collateral.”

CCEDC is able to work with these individuals, helping them grow their business.

To date, Chester County Economic Development Council’s impact is impressive. Through their various avenues, they have secured millions of dollars in project funding, worked with nearly 4,000 young individuals, and assisted hundreds of businesses receive financing.

Chester County Economic Development Council will continue to foster private sector growth and job creation while preserving the county’s quality of life.

Fling’s Towing Honored as Small Business of the Year

Fling’s Towing was recently recognized as the 2025 Small Business of the Year by the Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce.

WCCCC is proud to provide special recognition to the ChescoWest small business community each February by presenting the Western Chester County Small Business of the Year Award. The 2025 award was presented at the Chamber’s annual Member Extravaganza, hosted at Coatesville Country Club.

How Fling’s Towing Got Its Start…

Fling’s Towing, owned by Daryl Fling, has a comprehensive fleet of top-tier trucks and equipment, ensuring the safe and damage-free towing of vehicles or equipment. Fling’s offers their services 24/7, 365 days a year, accommodating both emergency and pre-scheduled needs.

The spark for this business was ignited in the 1970’s when Donald Fling ran an auto shop on 8th Avenue in

Coatesville. His son Daryl would hang out at the shop as a young kid, absorbing his father’s work ethic. The family then moved to a shop in Thorndale, where Daryl would head to the shop after school and work in the 9-bay service station.

His father soon partnered with a business to operate a used car lot, which led to the demand for a tow truck to meet the volume of vehicles moving in and out. Daryl took the lead on the towing part of the operation. It wasn’t long before he purchased that part of the company from his dad’s partner in 1985. He started by himself with two trucks.

Daryl said, “Over the years we got busier, so I’d borrow my sister to help load a car, my brother, my mom and stepfather would help out too.” From there, the business grew to what it is today, operating 22 trucks and overseeing 20 employees.

A Family-Owned Business, with Family Values

Just like the very beginning, Fling’s Towing sticks to their roots of being a family business. “As we grew and brought on more employees, we kept that same family style feel.”

Today, Daryl works alongside his brother Brian, his wife Tonya, and his son Daniel, who serves as the Operations Manager. His nephew, Tim tells the Fling’s story through his marketing efforts. His nephew, Brian Jr. works part-time in the shop too. “It has always been a blessing to have my family here with me.”

Daryl manages his team with care. His employees tackle the jobs in front of them.

“Safety is a big thing for us. We’re out recovering cars in all types of situations and weather incidents.” he said.

Fling’s employees learn about traffic incident management, awareness of their surroundings on the roadway, and how to rig vehicles properly, especially in crash situations.

Growing as a Small Business

Staying in front of industry changes is an important rule of thumb for all business owners. Implementing new processes and systems helped Fling’s streamline their efficiency and remain in front of their evolving industry.

“They hate to call me, but sure do love it when I show up,” Daryl said, noting that the biggest reward is being able to help people. “There’s good days and stressful days when something happens, or lots of things happen; you might be backed up, a truck might’ve broken down, someone calls in sick, you have those types of days, and you just work through them.”

Daryl also referenced his focus on keeping a strong faith in challenging situations, “We respond to car crashes and incidences that are emotional moments for those

individuals. It’s our role to offer comfort, respect, and stability in a sensitive time. “

Community Connections

For the past 40 years, Daryl has had his phone ready in his pocket. Any time of the night, he’s there to answer the call. Thanks to his business growth and strong staff, he can spend more time at home, but the long hours have always been a part of growing and maintaining the business.

“I still love to be out on the road. I also enjoy the dispatch aspect of towing; it’s rewarding for me to coordinate and guide our drivers where they need to go and help them to navigate through the jobs at hand.” Daryl said.

Partnerships are also a crucial piece in building your business. “Small jobs done well open doors to bigger jobs. We’re fortunate to have partnerships with dealerships and local auto shops, as well as businesses with large truck fleets that need serviced,” he said.

Fling’s consistent delivery of excellent service solidifies those partnerships. The team also serve as first responders, maintaining strong working relationships with our emergency service departments to keep our roadways clear and safe.

Looking to the Future

Another avenue the business noted as a driving force in growth is their marketing and communication efforts in the past few years. Daryl’s philosophy is that everything is about people. Telling the Fling’s story and taking time to pause, listen, and be a part of other’s stories is the seed to maintaining community connections with our neighbors.

Fling’s Towing trucks are often a familiar sight when driving around town. The business not only dedicates themselves to their customers, but also to their community. With their assortment of topof-the-line equipment, such as flatbeds, wreckers, forklifts, and more, they have provided immeasurable support to the ChescoWest community. The team has lent a helping hand to local nonprofits, participated in a variety of community events, and loves to bring their fleet out for Touch-A-Truck events for kids.

R. Phillips Service: Revving Up Your Ride with Quality Service

R. Phillips Service of Glenmoore is known not only as a shop that cares for fleet vehicles and commercial trucks, but—as of last December—there is a new side of the business dedicated to your personal vehicles.

“We had a very large request to do private vehicles, so we just opened up our car side,” owner Robert (Bob) Phillips said. “Now the general public can come in as well.”

Using the same philosophy with both sides of the shop, the goal is keeping vehicles in top shape to extend their lives, to prevent costly repairs, and to avoid breakdowns.

“We have maintenance schedules,” Bob said. “We do a lot of preventative maintenance, state inspections, safety repairs. Anything to do with auto repair or truck repair, we cover. When you bring in your vehicle, it wouldn’t

matter what it is - we run through each vehicle the same way every time. We have a checklist we run through and we do all the preventative maintenance per dealer request, and we provide a service to keep vehicles on the road instead of having major breakdowns.”

R. Phillips Service can handle all types of foreign and domestic cars and trucks with gas or diesel engines, with a team of certified diesel mechanics you can depend on to do the work.

“We can do a pickup truck, a tractor trailer, a trash truck. Anything with a diesel engine is our specialty,” Bob said. “Pretty much anything to do with your personal vehicle, other than reprograming the computer, we can do. We keep up with all the new technology, all the latest equipment to diagnose all the newer vehicles. Everything is very electric-dependent these days. There’s so many computers and modules that a bad battery or voltage change can shut that thing down.”

At R. Phillips Service, the key to your vehicle’s longevity is consistent, professional service. “We want to keep you coming back and we want you to be able to trust us. The goal is to have you see the results you are looking for,” Bob said. “We keep you on regular routine maintenance, we tell you when your inspection is due, we make sure our work is to your liking, you got what you expected to get, and that you’re happy with the service.”

Clients receive regular email or text reminders to help them stay up to date on maintenance and inspections. The website is also there to help when you have a problem with your vehicle outside normal business hours. You can go to the page, enter your problem and someone will get back to you promptly to set an appointment or arrange a tow.

“Your average every day auto shops where you’re doing your oil changes, tire rotations, and things like that are great—we just have a different experience here, and a different quality level that I expect to get out of this shop,” Bob said. “I think that’s what keeps people coming back. The average customer sees us four times a year. Above all else, we’re honest with people. You don’t always tell them what they want to hear, but you tell them what’s needed.”

Celebrating a Decade of Progress:

Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance Marks 10 Years of Community Impact

As we step into 2025, Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance proudly celebrates a decade of dedication to economic revitalization, community development, and strategic partnerships that have transformed our city. Over the past ten years, our organization has worked tirelessly to strengthen the downtown corridor, foster small business growth, and create opportunities that uplift the entire community. This milestone is not just a reflection of our efforts but a testament to the power of collaboration and shared vision.

From the beginning, our mission has been to drive sustainable economic development while preserving the heart and soul of Coatesville. One of our most significant achievements has been securing funding to support both our downtown and neighborhood revitalization initiatives. These funds have helped drive programs that directly benefit residents, such as neighborhood cleanups, resident-driven grant programs, home buyer workshops, and tenant rights workshops.

When we started our work ten years ago, the storefront vacancy rate was over 50%. Today, most of those vacant storefronts are now home to thriving businesses, with the

remaining few accounted for as upcoming businesses and restaurants set to open later in 2025 and early 2026. The train station conversations and planning began well before the establishment of Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance, but today, the project is now 55% complete. Residents surveyed have expressed that they’ve seen improvements and are excited about the growth of Coatesville. More importantly, residents are beginning to feel empowered and engaged in shaping their own community’s future.

One of the most exciting transformations has been Midway Arts, an old warehouse space that was merely a thought when Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance was established. Today, it houses more than 30 businesses, serving as a dynamic hub for creativity and entrepreneurship in downtown Coatesville.

The Made in Coatesville Small Business Incubator has been another transformative initiative, already providing a home to ten budding entrepreneurs. Offering a cost-effective space to sell and market their products and services, the incubator has become a vital retail hub in downtown Coatesville. If someone had told us a decade ago that we’d have an incubator fostering small businesses and plans underway for a commercial kitchen to help food entrepreneurs launch their dreams, we might have laughed over a cup of coffee—except now, that coffee might just be brewed by a local entrepreneur who got their start with our support.

Our journey has been fueled by strong partnerships with businesses, nonprofits, and civic leaders who share our vision for a thriving Coatesville. Through strategic investments and grassroots collaboration, we’ve helped cultivate an environment where businesses can succeed and families can flourish. As we reflect on our accomplishments, we also look forward to the future. Our focus remains on fostering economic growth, supporting entrepreneurs, and enhancing the quality of life for all who call Coatesville home. The progress we’ve made is just the beginning, and we invite you to be a part of shaping the next ten years of impact.

To commemorate this milestone, we are hosting a 10-Year Anniversary Masquerade Ball on May 16, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM at The Arches. This elegant evening will be a celebration of our past, present, and future, featuring live entertainment, dining, and a chance to connect with

those who have played a pivotal role in Coatesville’s transformation. We invite you to visit our website for tickets and sponsorship opportunities. Your support ensures that we continue driving meaningful change for our community for years to come.

Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance would not be where it is today without the unwavering dedication of our supporters. Whether you’ve contributed as a business partner, a donor, or a community advocate, your involvement has made a difference. We are honored to celebrate this milestone with you and excited about the opportunities ahead. Together, we are shaping a brighter future for Coatesville. Here’s to the next ten years of progress and prosperity!

About the Coatesville 2nd Century Alliance

The 2nd Century Alliance was founded in 2015, when the City celebrated 100 years of incorporation, to ensure Coatesville’s “second century” is economically prosperous.

A public/private partnership funded in part by the Chester County Commissioners and private sector contributions, the organization’s mission is to drive economic development in the City of Coatesville that enables the community to thrive.

Traditional Craftsmanship for the Modern Era Choice Custom Cabinetry

Choice Custom Cabinetry produces heirloom quality cabinetry that will add both value and beauty to you home.

Founded in 1979 by Levi Stoltzfus, the company has always had a focus on high quality and customer service. Today the business is carried on by Levi’s sons Steven and Leon. Steven acts as company president, working with customers and designs, while CEO Leon handles the manufacturing side of the business.

“We tell all our customers, if it’s possible to be made out of wood, we can do it,” Steven said.

Clients can bring in photos and measurements to work with the company and develop a plan that will fit their needs. Sometimes it is an older home that may not fit the standard cabinet sizes found in a big box store, or it may be that you want a special feature or finish that is not readily available.

Utilizing a mix of traditional Amish craftsmanship and modern technology, Choice Custom Cabinetry takes advantage of computerized color matching and three-

dimensional design drawings, as well as precision machinery to make the cabinets of your dreams for your kitchen, bathroom, and any other room of your house.

Choice Custom Cabinetry specializes in cabinets and wood working projects. They do not do countertops or appliances, but they can recommend specialists in those fields that you can work with to complete a total kitchen renovation.

The company serves Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York, Delaware, Maryland and the Washington D.C. area, and they can ship anywhere.

There is just one showroom located at 3400 Horseshoe Pike in Honey Brook, but on the website you can see a wide variety of cabinet designs. Steven explains that many times people will come to them with a photograph of a design they like as a starting point. A representative can come to your home to show you options and help lay out the design for your new cabinets.

While kitchen cabinets are the most frequent request, do not limit your imagination to that one room. Choice Custom Cabinetry can make bathroom vanity and cabinets, or you may want to add built-in cabinets to your living room or den, or perhaps an entertainment center for your family room.

If your kitchen floor plan is an odd size that doesn’t quite match the dimensions available in cabinets from a big box store, then custom-made cabinets let you maximize your space.

Once the design process is completed, it takes approximately 8 to 10 weeks to complete and deliver the finished product.

Steven said that Choice Custom Cabinetry recognizes the importance of good customer service, and they prioritize the experience that customers have to make sure they are satisfied with the high quality cabinets and the customer service, too.

“No job is too big or too small. We want to help you,” Steven said. For more information, visit the website at cabinetsbycw.com or call the office at 610-273-2907.

Honey Brook Community Partnership

The Honey Brook Community Partnership is now entering its 17th year of dedication to its mission “to bring together Borough and Township partners to facilitate communication, share resources, and work together to enhance their community.” For the past several years, the partnership’s flagship event has been a community fair held on Harmony Day, the 3rd Saturday in September. While vendors and crafters have been a big draw to this event in the past, space constraints this past year required us to instead maximize games, food, and entertainment to create a day of family fun. The event was very well attended and enjoyed by the community. Support by the Honey Brook Fire Company to provide a “Touch a Truck” opportunity, and the Elverson Honey Brook EMS staff to conduct CPR and “Stop the Bleed” training added to the day. A new addition to this event for

the past two years is a Blankets of Honor presentation to a deserving veteran. This year’s recipient was George Risbon of Honey Brook who served in the United States Air Force, is a member of the Honey Brook Township Veteran’s Honor Roll and is known locally for his exceptional community service conducted through the Lion’s Club. In the true spirit of community, the Lanchester Landfill and Reclamation Center (LLARC), M&T Bank, Honey Brook Golf Course and Tel Hai Retirement Community were among the top sponsors of the fair.

The goal of the community event is to utilize proceeds from the event for the benefit of the community. One way this is accomplished is through our support of scholarships to deserving Twin Valley High School students. In May, we gave out three $1000 scholarships, one of which was offered for the first time in 2024 to honor the Partnership’s

founder, Reuben Schonebaum. Additionally, we chose to support the Honey Brook Youth Center with food for a December event.

The Partnership also offered itself along with invited community members to be a focus group for the Health Care Improvement Foundation who were charged with gathering community input for a county wide Community Health Needs Assessment. In this manner, Honey Brook was given a “voice” as to its challenges as a small rural community with barriers regarding access to healthcare and transportation among other concerns.

For the year 2025, the Partnership will direct its efforts towards two primary goals. The first is to strengthen the alignment of the Partnership with both the Borough and the Township Councils and their goals for the community.

The second is to increase community engagement by creating a digital event calendar that incorporates all the events and activities occurring in the area. Among these events will be Partnership conducted events such as a fall community fair and other events being planned, in addition to activities of other organizations and groups who can benefit from the added promotion of their events.

For more information about the Honey Brook Community Partnership, visit www. honeybrookpartnership.com. For questions email us at info@honeybrookpartnership.com . New members are always welcome. Our partners represent non-profit, commercial, or other organizations serving the Honey Brook community and are committed to helping vitalize the Honey Brook community.

Rethinking the Commute:

How Share-A-Ride is Easing Congestion on Route 30

P. Timothy Phelps, Executive Director

For commuters along Chester County’s congested Route 30 Bypass, traffic is more than an inconvenience— it is a daily reality that chips away at time, productivity, and quality of life. But what if there was an easy way to reduce gridlock while saving money and making the commute less stressful? Enter Share-A-Ride, a free, user-friendly program designed to match commuters with carpool, vanpool, transit, biking, and even walking partners—all with just a few clicks.

The program, offered through TMACC in partnership with the Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), is a solution tailor-made for anyone tired of sitting alone in traffic. And it has never been easier to sign up. By visiting DVRPC’s Share-A-Ride page or TMACC’s portal at Share-ARide TMACC, commuters can quickly create an account, enter their home and work locations, and instantly see options for a smarter, more sustainable commute.

guaranteed ride home in case of an emergency.

“This program is a game-changer,” Phelps adds. “If we can get more commuters to give it a try, we’ll see a noticeable improvement in traffic congestion and air quality in Chester County.”

So why not give Share-A-Ride a chance? With zero cost, maximum convenience, and real impact, it is time to rethink your commute. For more information go to www.dvrpc.org/sar/ or www.tmacc.org/commuting.

Potholes: Nature’s Way of Testing Your Suspension

It’s that magical time of year again—Pothole Season where roads transform into war-zones, and your morning commute could become an off-road adventure; keep the lid on the coffee . Thanks to the freeze-thaw cycle, Pennsylvania roadways are now dotted with craters of many a size; one on Business 30 I think was large enough to swallow compact cars (no really but big) BUT ITS FIXED!

“Reducing the number of single-occupant vehicles is critical to addressing congestion on Route 30,” says Tim Phelps, Executive Director of TMACC. “Share-A-Ride provides commuters with a real opportunity to carpool or vanpool, by helping to reduce both travel times and emissions.”

And the benefits do not stop at easing congestion. Share-A-Ride participants can qualify for perks such as discounts on transit and even earn rewards for greener commuting choices. Plus, commuters hesitant to carpool because of unexpected schedule changes can rest easy knowing that DVRPC’s Emergency Ride Home program offers a safety net—ensuring they will have a

But don’t just scream into the void—report those road hazards! Use the PennDOT Customer Care Center to submit your pothole grievances (minus the colorful language). For urgent issues, dial 1-800-FIX-ROAD before your shocks call it quits.

For pothole emergencies (you know, the ones deep enough to qualify as new zip codes and could cause an accident), call 9-1-1.

When reporting, include the location, details, and even a picture—because nothing says “fix this!” than photo of a blackhole. Once submitted, you’ll receive a reference number so you can track its repair status.

Until then, drive carefully—and be a good neighbor by reporting your roadway concern.

The Golf Zone Family comes back stronger than ever after destructive

Family Fun Center ever with renovation plans destructive fire

The Golf Zone Family Fun Center has a phenomenal team of dreamers and doers. When faced with adversity, they show that they’re able to come back stronger. After a devastating fire in December 2023, the business has since pivoted and is currently undergoing a massive renovation.

The Golf Zone opened in 2000, after which it was purchased by Steve DiMarco. Eight years ago, Harry Hammond became a partner at The Golf Zone. Hammond has been in the golf industry all his life, now a two-time National award winner and member of Philadelphia PGA. He started as a caddy, working his way through school. Later, he was the Director of Gold at Whitford Country Club and a partner at Penn Oaks Golf Club. When Hammond joined The Golf Zone as a partner, he hired George McNamara to handle the daily operations of the business. After McNamara’s unfortunate passing in July 2022, Hammond transitioned to full time at The Golf Zone.

The Golf Zone added their family fun center about three years ago. While remaining true to the game of golf, they’ve added other draws for families, younger children, and beginner golfers.

The business takes advantage of Top Tracer technology, which is used for the PGA Tour. “The player strikes the ball, and the ball flight is trackable,” said Jessica Rigo, who focuses on The Golf Zone’s operations and programming. “As a beginner golfer myself, I’m able to login to the app when I’m practicing, and the app will track all my metrics.” Rigo also added that the technology is used to play virtual golf courses and children’s games such as Angry Golf.

The Golf Zone has mini golf, go-karts (seasonally), and four lanes of duck pin bowling, which is a new feature added during the rebuild. Accessibility is a goal for the

Continued on Page 50

new building, with those in wheelchairs, small children, and retirees always in mind.

Private suite rentals are also available. When the renovated building officially opens, full party and corporate event packages will be offered. “Those interested in setting up an event would contact me, and we would discuss what they’re looking for and build out the party package from there.” Rigo explained. Guests can choose to be outdoors

or indoors and add on mini golf, go-karting, and any other services. This way, each event is fully customizable.

Golf lessons, clinics, and leagues are an integral part of the business model. The clinics are small group settings, set up for instruction based on a particular topic. Golf lessons are private, one-on-one instruction, and are tailored to the individual’s skill set and needs.

“Both lessons and clinics are for beginners and those who are more advanced, for men and women, and are available seven days a week,” said Hammond, who focuses his experience on teaching and instructing. Junior golf clinics are separated by age groups: 6–9-year-olds and 10–13-year-olds. After 13 years old, most kids prefer private instruction. Hammond added that there are plans to expand the teaching aspect of the business and will be looking to hire other coaches done the line. With these courses, The Golf Zone prides itself on providing service from childhood through adulthood.

They won’t stop there: The Golf Zone is currently working on a new and improved golf shop. “We will be a fitting and teaching center for four or five major club brands,” said Hammond. “When you buy a set of clubs, it’s an investment – you could spend $2,000 or $3,000, so getting fit for the right club is important.”

The Golf Zone will also offer introductory club sets for beginners,

running about $400-$600. The shop will also partner with a junior golf program called U.S. Kids. “If you buy a set of clubs for your young son or daughter, you can trade them back and apply the trade to a new set,” Hammond explained. “As the child grows, you can be sure they have the right length golf club in their hands.”

Golf increased 20% after COVID-19 and it’s said that golf is a small world, so it stays with you. It’s truly customizable, being both a singular and a team sport. It can be used as a fun, social outing and a time of peace and quiet. The Golf Zone adds a little more to the game than the average country club.

“It’s a very fun and relaxed environment.” said Rigo. “A lot of people pass us on the street and just decide to come in. It isn’t a competitive or intimidating environment; it’s like Disneyland.” The golf pros easily connect with golfers, getting to know them, chat with them, and offer tips and tricks. People want to stay and hang out awhile.

There are no memberships at The Golf Zone Family Fun Center. It’s an affordable way to enjoy the game and other activities. The business is open to all!

On December 30, 2023, ten fire companies and 150 firemen responded to the alarm at The Golf Zone. Equipment was everywhere, as they tended to the monstrous fire. Hammond plans to have a “Thank You Day” for the fire companies and fire chiefs after the new building opens.

Although tragic, the fire changed the vision for the business. “The fire destroyed everything, so it gave us a chance to assess what we did right and what we did wrong,” Hammond said.

They had to start from scratch. Even parts of the property that weren’t touched by fire were still too damaged to salvage. When The Golf Zone rebuilt, they did it better. The clubhouse used to be a two-story building but has since been turned into a one-story. The business never offered food and beverage before the fire, but now they’ve built a full-service bar and restaurant in the clubhouse. Their food partner is VK Brewing, which will bring Fairway Taphouse to The Golf Zone. The team is currently building out catering packages for parties and events. While the menu is subject to change, Fairway Taphouse will feature comforting and delicious items such as flatbreads and handhelds with locally sourced ingredients.

As far as the rest of the expansion goes, one of the hitting wings will be covered for rain and any unappealing weather. Next to the hitting wing, a new teaching center will go up. A Par 3 course will be added to the lawn.

“The Golf Zone is working to become the go-to spot for learning the game of golf in our area.” Rigo said.

With their passion, adaptability, and creative new features and service, The Golf Zone Family Fun Center is bigger and better than ever before.

De-Mystifying PennDOT’s Adopt-a-Highway Programs

Submitted by the Chester County Planning Commission

We’ve all seen the blue signs along state-owned roadways – “Adopt a Highway Litter Control – Next 2 Miles” – followed by the name of a business, organization, or school. Have you ever wondered how to get your name on one of those signs? Here’s how to do it!

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) administers several roadway beautification programs that businesses, organizations, and even individuals and families can participate in: Adopt-a-Highway, Sponsor-a-Highway, and Adopt-and-Beautify. The goal of these programs is to help keep our state roadways clean, which are often rife with litter. Participating in these programs is a great way to support a healthy and beautiful environment close to home, to connect your employees with meaningful volunteer opportunities, and to demonstrate your businesses’ goodwill in the community.

Adopt a Highway

Organizations can sign up to “adopt” a 2-mile segment of a state-maintained roadway, right of way, interchange,

or traffic island in Pennsylvania. By signing up, you commit your group to cleaning up your adopted road segment twice per year for at least two years. PennDOT provides FREE supplies - safety vests, gloves, trash bags and safety signage – to volunteer groups. When your clean-up is finished, volunteers leave the full trash bags along the road, and PennDOT will pick them up once a pick-up request is made through their website. Additionally, PennDOT will install the blue “Adopt a Highway” sign with your organization’s name on it!

Sponsor a Highway

Some roadways are too dangerous for volunteer litter pick-up events, but these roadways often have the most litter. The Sponsor a Highway program involves businesses securing agreements with one of two vendors selected by PennDOT who use their skilled maintenance forces to perform roadside litter removal. The organization sponsors the cost of these professional litter crews and receives a blue Sponsor a Highway sign recognizing their organization’s sponsorship.

Adopt & Beautify

The Adopt & Beautify program provides opportunities for local citizens, businesses and community organizations to beautify sites they select and design for the purposes of enhancing the beauty of the roadside, providing a positive first impression, providing habitat for native pollinators, and exhibiting community pride. Typical Adopt & Beautify projects involve the planting and routine maintenance of one or more beds along a roadway or within an interchange. Projects could also include planter boxes along state roads in downtown areas. This is a wonderful way to say, “Welcome to Chester County and our community.” Volunteer groups commit to their project for a minimum of two years, and in return PennDOT places a sign recognizing the group for its efforts.

To sign up for any of these programs, visit PennDOT’s website at pa.gov/services/penndot/apply-to-clean-up-aroadway-in-your-community.html.

Local matters when it comes to your home

Chester County Home and Lifestyle Show

This spring, local home improvement businesses will fill the gym at North Brandywine Middle School for the annual Chester County Home and Lifestyle Show on March 29th. This event gathers vendors with a variety of services like carpentry, electrical, painting, windows, plumbing, flooring real estate and more. The doors will open to the public at 10:00 a.m. and run until 3:00 p.m., an entire day for

neighbors to come and connect with businesses that can transform their home.

The Chamber takes pride in hosting this homegrown-style vendor show, because local matters when it comes to your home. Hiring a business that is ingrained in the community and lives and runs their business here, often will be an experience that not only enhances your home but also is

done through a process with personal attention to your desired details.

Businesses that work and live in our region, know the lay of the land. Local contractors bring expertise that can help your next project run smoothly without problems and delays. They’re used to working with local building codes and regulations and have developed relationships in those departments that avoid costly and time-consuming mistakes.

solution to your unique needs, makes a difference. Local realtor Chris Anderson will be at the Home Show and says, “There’s a lot of steps involved in the homebuying process. There can be hiccups along the way and I’m here to help people understand what they need. I’ll always advise on whether a house is a good investment or not, for that my clients trust me.”

Local home improvement businesses have to be flexible and focus on a variety of needs. Attention to detail goes a long way according to Chester County Tile and Design, presenting sponsor of the Home Show. “We provide design, tile products and installation. That is very important to me, as I have always been focused on customer service. I’ve seen where those three things may be done by three different people, and I feel it works much better for the customer if they don’t have to coordinate so many pieces and can have one go-to person.”

Local companies also have references you can count on, as they’re from neighbors! Seeing a contractor’s projects firsthand, and talking with previous customers, makes it easier to make the decision on your home project. The Home Show is an opportunity each year for residents to meet face to face with local experts in their industry.

When it comes down to it, businesses that are in western Chester County are generally relationship driven and sociable. The neighborhood contractor is more likely to give you a call or stop by for a consultation chat, than an answering service you may find yourself listening to with national companies. “We treat customers as we would want to be treated and think it’s very important to uphold fair and honest business practices” says Chester County Tile and Design. Delivering results within budget and with minimal issues is critical when taking a big step such as a home renovation or purchase. Having a professional look at your desired results and craft a

When projects stay local, more tax money goes back into our regional economy.

It’s said businesses that are community involved donate 250% more to close-to-home non-profit organizations. Nobody knows that better than Jeremy Mueller of Electrical Plus. His business is committed to not only excellence in electrical work but also in treating clients and employees with care and making community and non-profit engagement a top priority. Jeremy says, “Businesses flourish not only by providing excellent services but also by being deeply-rooted in the community it serves.”
