Dear Members and Friends,
As you may know, I like to begin my President’s message with a favorite quote.
“Find a group of people who challenge and inspire you; spend a lot of time with them, and it will change your life.” — Amy Poehler
For this letter, my quote references friendship, and for me, the quote is perfect when I think about the number of members I can truly call a friend – and it’s more than I can believe!
Friendship in simple words is a relationship you have with your chosen family. Friends are the sisters and brothers we never had; and it may be difficult to put into words how thankful we are for them.
Many of us at the Chamber do not socialize outside of business, however, nonetheless, we are friends. May I encourage you to get to know other members on a more personal level
- grow friendships with other members…take the time to learn about them – dig deeper than their career, business, or organization. I guarantee you it will make a difference in your relationship – and when you do talk about business, it will come much easier and have more meaning.
As always, if we haven’t connected, please reach out to me – I look forward to getting to know you and calling you friend.
Best regards, Cheryl

At Paradocx Vineyard, every sip and every glass of wine tells a little about the winery in Landenberg.
Paradocx Vineyard was at the forefront of Chester County’s wine scene when it debuted more than 25 years ago. In this edition of Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce’s Connections, we celebrate southern Chester County’s wine scene with stories about Paradox, the Acadian Wine Company, Harvest Ridge Winery, 1723 Vineyards, and Casa Carmen. These wineries have all earned acclaim for their award-winning wines, and they also offer fun experiences with food, live music, and the opportunity for camaraderie and culture.
At the Acadian Wine Company, winemaker Kyle Jones has successfully balanced the art of making wine with playing host at what has become one of the coolest and most delicious places to visit in southern Chester County.
Anyone looking for an enjoyable wine tasting experience located off the beaten track can find it in the small village of Toughkenamon, New Garden Township, at the Harvest Ridge Winery, which offers a wide variety of wines from local grapes as well as entertainment, tastings, space rentals, demonstrations, a wine club and attention to individual preferences.
At 1723 Vineyards in Landenberg, Ben and Sarah Cody, both fifth-generation farmers, utilize
their midwestern agricultural roots to emphasize that wine doesn’t need to be intimidating to be good.
the bucolic farm of Casa Carmen, three generations of families work together to bring the vision of the vineyard and the tasting room to life.
We’re pleased to celebrate these wineries on the pages that follow. In this issue, we also introduce you to a few of the members of the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce that have particularly interesting stories. DuVall Bus Service has been a fixture in the community for eight decades, and the company’s school buses have been safely and dependably transporting students for generations. Like DuVall Bus Service, Lester Water Inc. has a long history in the community. Lester Water is beginning its 74th year serving residents in Chester County and the surrounding region. The company specializes in installing and servicing water treatment equipment in homes that are served by wells or municipal water, and anyone who would like to improve the quality of the water in their home. We also have a story about the YMCA of Greater Brandywine’s new Fit Truk, a fully equipped wellness hub on wheels. The Fit Truk will help expand access to health and fitness offerings across Chester County, just one of the many ways that Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce members are making a difference.
By Richard L. Gaw
When I first met winemaker Kyle Jones in the late winter of 2022, he was a few weeks removed from his purchase of the former Kreutz Creek vineyards on South Guernsey Road in West Grove. It was a blustery February afternoon, and the tasting room was a clutter of blueprints, guidelines and vision for what Jones imagined would become the social equivalent of gathering at a private home for great wine, live music and culture and the camaraderie of friends.
Now, three years later, the Acadian Wine Company has become a destination -- a near-nightly happening of kinetic energy sweetened by the winery’s varietals, from its Vidal Blanc and Pinot Grigio and Gruner Veltliner to its family of reds that include its Redbone, Tidal and Crown.
Accompanied by a dinner of sushi and a few glasses of Acadian’s Sauvignon Blanc, Jones and I recently spoke about what the last three years have meant to him, and the juggling act of balancing the art of making wine with playing host at what has become one of the coolest and most delicious places to visit in southern Chester County.
Take me back to the moment when you first drove down the driveway of the old Kreutz Creek Vineyard. What clicked in your mind? What potential did you see?
Standing among the fall foliage and rolling hills I saw a good jumping point. It wasn’t a perfect hand-off in terms of wine variety but there was a certain amount of infrastructure, a certain amount of local buy-in to the idea of growing and producing wine, great geological growing conditions to continue the tradition here, enough tanks to begin to get the winemaking off the ground, and a beautiful place to exhibit it all. I saw the potential of having the basis for communicating what would become Acadian’s stories and experiences.
How important was “place” in your decision to establish your winery in Chester County?
The state has its different wine regions and to a certain degree, there is some untapped potential in Chester County because there are not as many large-scale viticultural operations as there are in other regions of the state. Having the ideal conditions viticultural-wise, there are those things here. I saw this property as an opportunity to practice the art of winemaking on a small scale and able to be close enough to a population who may be sympathetic to local wines was very important.
We are located in a small part of what has become one continuous region within the worldscape of wine. Wines of quality are able to maintain individual character. There is a uniqueness to our terroir, as well as unique beauty among the landscape, and history of Chester County.
It tends to be a prerequisite for every visionary no matter his or her pursuit to write down a list of goals they wish to achieve with a project or initiative. In terms of the Acadian Wine Company, what was included on your list as you began to sketch out your plans?
I wanted to create another experience for the Pennsylvania wine consumer, to offer high quality wines in the location where they are made, and to create a space where people can feel in community with the product. That extends not only to growing a vineyard in a sustainable way and crafting products that maintain that authenticity but also offering a space where people can enjoy that product and
be included with the storytelling of that product, as well as making this a part of their own memories.
How did you set out to retrofit your vision within the existing infrastructure of the business that was here before you arrived in 2022?
It’s always a work in progress, a path of transformation. Chief among my first tasks was to assess the viticultural resource that was left behind, which required a lot of work. Property wise, there were some areas that needed brush chopping, and others that needed some tlc, the property has a lot of natural beauty so doing things to highlight that part of the experience was important. It also involved fixing tools and winemaking equipment. I have done most of the work myself but there have been some weekends when relatives show up to help, but I grew up doing manual labor, so I continue to clear out dead trunks, repair trellises and manicure the property and prune all of the grape vines.
In the tasting room, I applied a fresh coat of paint to its walls, I re-finished the floor, built the bar and plugged in some new refrigerators. All of that physical work was happening at the same time as developing labels and figuring out the licensing and transitioning.
Perhaps the biggest untruth about being a winemaker is that it’s 99 percent romance – hosting wine tastings and wine dinners – and one percent labor, when in reality, it’s exactly the opposite, according to what other winemakers have told me. Would you agree?
Continued from Page 13
I tend to think of it the opposite way. It’s 100 percent romance, because if you lose sight of that, it’s only work. That could be with anything really. At its core, there are the nuts and bolts of running a farm, manufacturing, and hospitality business -- all things that require intense effort on the capitalist side to keep things progressing. However, all these efforts become hollow without the thru line of a romantic idea and understanding that there is a soul in the process.
What first led you to the art of winemaking?
I came from varied work experiences that all required a generalist’s mindset. I found myself drawn early to the practice of working with a living thing. The entire process requires consistent effort that involves the human beings engaged with the process. Winemaking is a uniquely human endeavor that requires a mystical cooperation with the natural world. You get to create a brand and a story behind it, and after you figure out a way to get it to the
customer, it does its own thing for a couple of decades. The resulting liquid is never without a say in the process.
Acadian Wine Company is not only known for its wines, but it has also become a home that celebrates the art of conversation and company. You’ve hosted weddings, wine dinners, benefit events, gallery shows and a weekly calendar of live music. How has the social component of running this winery complimented the physical act of growing, cultivating and making wine? You are an artist, a winemaker and a social coordinator.
The social component is inherent to the enjoyment of the product. Every bottle is a conversation, whether it is shared among people during any of the events you’ve mentioned, or at a quiet table accompanied by a snack and a good view.
One of the things that I enjoy about speaking with so many of your colleagues is hearing that each one speaks highly about the brotherhood and sisterhood of winemakers in this growing wine region. It’s as if you’re all pulling along with the same current, would you agree?
Most of the time, we will see each other only at awards banquets or at yearly conferences, or if there is a direct business relationship. In the few times we get to interact, we always share things. We share wines. We break bread together, trade knowledge and commiserate with one another. That’s what pulls us all together, because while these wine operations are each their own organisms, we communicate with each other and in a sense, we’re pulling with the same tide or current. That’s what has made the success of the wine industry in Chester County possible.

Continued from Page 15
Do me a huge favor. Kill off the very last sentiment that I’ve heard from non-winemakers who claim that you can’t grow grapes in Chester County. It’s too rocky and the soil isn’t conducive for growing.
The people who make those comments have very little evidence. Those with any rudimentary knowledge of oldworld winemaking are aware of the rocky soils the grapes are grown in. It’s a complex of variables as to what contributes to a vineyard’s health. You have to have a long enough growing season, the right climactic conditions, temperature, moisture, air movement, good draining soil, proper exposure and strong stock selection, etc.
You have to stay in tune with your growing seasons, instead of just planting something and making sure that it doesn’t become diseased. We all pay the same attention to our product. We figured out how to grow grapes here and it’s a benefit to know that grapes are survivors.

The Acadian Wine Company is part of the conversation when it comes to the emerging wine culture in southeastern Pennsylvania. Where do you see this winery – and in a larger sense, the local industry -- heading in the near future?
I see Acadian Wine Company continuing to produce healthy and beautiful vineyards that produce varietals that make exceptional wines. It’s always my goal to continually invest in the spaces that visitors come to enjoy. Creating a place that fosters community around love of the product and place from where it came is always part of the future vision.
Industry wise, we’re still in the transition period. There are wineries deciding whether they will become second generation. There are still new wineries popping up and there are wineries that are closing. At the same time, we are developing a critical mass of people wanting to be a part of the winemaking business. The wine consumer has their pick of the lot, and so we feel fortunate that people are coming out to visit us.
The Acadian Wine Company is located at 553 South Guernsey Road in West Grove. Tel.: (302) 256-9788. www.acadianwinecompany.com.
The YMCA of Greater Brandywine (YGBW) recently introduced its Fit Truk, a fully equipped wellness hub on wheels, expanding access to health and fitness offerings across Chester County. YGBW is the first YMCA Association on the east coast – and the second in the nation – to operate a Fit Truk.
“The purpose of the Fit Truk is to be able to take the services of the Y beyond our physical locations,” said Veronica Lopez, vice president of health strategies. “Not everyone can make it to the Y. The Fit Truk allows us to provide programs and services out in the communities that we serve – including schools, parks, local businesses and more. We can also partner with corporations through our corporate wellness programs to bring the Fit Truk on site to support employee well-being or with healthcare providers to help reach underserved communities.”
The Fit Truk is equipped with a full cohort of exercise equipment to provide a full workout for all fitness levels. The Fit Truk can provide a full fitness experience to 40 people at a time and includes office space for healthcare providers to conduct screenings, administer vaccinations and offer other wellness services.
“With the Fit Truk, we have the opportunity to deliver fitness directly into our community – but also to provide vital health screenings performed by medical providers,” said YGBW president and CEO, Bertram L. Lawson II. “Together, we can fast-track the delivery of our mission to all in Chester County – moving beyond our branch walls
and forging new paths to connect our neighbors to vital health services.”
The Fit Truk extends the organization’s work to ensure that all in the community have access to tools, knowledge and resources that promote a healthy lifestyle and reduce and prevent chronic disease. With the Fit Truk, YGBW can expand services, reaching portions of the county where services are most needed.
Lopez sees the flexibility of the Fit Truk as one of its best features. The programs can be tailored to the audience, delivering fitness instruction that adapt to the needs of each community, whether serving youth, seniors or beginners on their health journey or offering chronic disease prevention programs such as blood pressure monitoring.
“The goal is to adapt the Fit Truk’s services to the needs of the community it serves,” Lopez said. “While the Fit Truk is one of the most visible elements of our work, it is just one piece of a much larger puzzle as we continue to address gaps in the health care continuum.”
Although Chester County has the highest income level of any county in the state, it is also an area with great needs.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, over 35,000 Chester County residents are living in the poverty level and an additional 60,000 earn less than the basic cost of living, which impacts their overall health.
To help reach this population with important health care and fitness, YGBW raises funds to provide financial assistance to those unable to pay the standard rates. In 2024, more than $2.6 million was provided to ensure area residents have access to childcare, summer camp, wellness programs and memberships at YGBW.
The YMCA of Greater Brandywine is a leading non-profit organization committed to building community, serving more than 87,000 people throughout Chester County. YGBW operates nine branches and program centers as well as the new Fit Truk, providing life-changing programs to nurture the potential of every child, promote healthy living for all and foster social responsibility.

Anyone looking for an enjoyable wine tasting experience located off the beaten track can find it in the small village of Toughkenamon in New Garden Township.
While this tiny southern Chester County crossroads is seldom thought of as a social destination, sitting there beside the railroad tracks on Newark Road is Harvest Ridge Winery – a tempting attraction.
This bistro offers a wide variety of wines from local grapes as well as entertainment, tastings, space rentals, demonstrations, a wine club and attention to individual preferences.
Harvest Ridge is open Thursday through Sunday and available by call most other days.
Its parent company, owner and source of its inventory is Harvest Ridge Winery, a family farm winery in Marydel, Del. It was founded by Chuck Nunan, and opened in November of 2013. as the fourth winery in the state.
This parent winery sits on 180 acres of land and grows grapes on 12 acres. It also buys fruit from nearby growers, according to the company website.
The manager of the Toughkenamon Harvest Ridge winery and tasting room is Megan Damp. She is a constant presence there, and even when the business is closed on Mondays through Wednesdays, she is generally there to respond to individual requests for those who call for an appointment to make a last-minute purchase.
Damp has an undergraduate degree in hospitality and a graduate degree from the Culinary Institute of America in wine and beverage management.
“It is the industry I always wanted to be in,” she said. So eager is she to share her love of the job, she says even in cooking, “I put wine on everything.”
One of the advantages of having a winery in Toughkenamon is its easy accessibility for out-of-towners.
Visitors can avoid the hinderances of traffic, parking and crowding that they are likely to encounter in a more urban location.
Harvest Ridge has plenty to offer its customers.
First and foremost, its main focus is selling good, home-grown wine and helping customers get what they like.
As this roomy building faces Newark Road, customers coming in the front door cannot help being struck by the wide variety of wines they see lining the walls and the opportunities for choices they have.
There is even a row wine in bottles dressed in small honorary hoods representing the winning blends Harvest Ridge has won in tasting contests.
Harvest Ridge offers about 35 kinds of wine, which can be ordered by the glass, by the bottle or by a combination of the two. There are also meads, cider, beers and sodas.
The source of the wines is exclusively supplied by Harvest Ridge or their associates in the Eastern United States from Virginia to the Finger Lakes of New York.
Damp explained that while the farm at Harvest Ridge in Delaware grows about a dozen different kinds of grapes, the geography and climate conditions require some resources from farther away. They often send out for grapes that have grown where the conditions are warmer, rainier or accustomed to different soil conditions.
Damp says she often responds to questions and preferences of wine-drinkers, and she has plenty of answers or suggestions. There are even people who don’t drink wine at all, and she has tips for them as well.
In an effort to determine the potential preferences of her customers, she has designed a chart which an individual or several guests in the group may fill out and check off the characteristics they like.
She examines those checks and offers some choices that she believes the answers have indicated will appeal to them.
She even recalled one non-wine drinker to whom she offered the tasting room’s favorite Blue Hen Blue – a staple of for Harvest Ridge that’s a blend of concord grape
and blueberries and tastes like grape juice.
“I offer it to them if they don’t like wine. They say, ‘Oh, I like this.’”
Continued on Page 24
Continued from Page 23
But Harvest Ridge goes beyond that drinking wine, however.
For customers who come in with more than an appetite for wine, Damp offers charcuterie boards for a fee. They are elegant little slabs of wooden dishes topped with snacks like meat, cheese, crackers and a delicious topping. Currently she has two versions for sale: one with cheese and two kinds of meat and the other with one kind of meat. She said she is hoping to increase the variety and number of charcuteries (snacks) – just one of the ideas she has for the future.
One feature that attracts fans is the entertainment.
Often on Saturday nights she has local bands come in to provide music. She does not charge a special price for the entertainment nights, but she says the music means more guests come, they stay longer, and they drink more wine.
Another form of entertainment she offers is demonstrations.
There are groups of skilled crafts persons who have something to show or explain in detail. She used the example of flower arranging.
These groups can come in to do a small show, and their audiences can relax in a casual environment with some wine and learn a little something along the way. There is also a wine club.
These members join to receive discounts on their wine, $1 drinks on the month of their birthdays and the chance to discuss their tastes with others as well as making friends.
The building itself has some interesting features. A back room with a capacity of up to about 75 guests is available for rental. This is a benefit for people who want to have a special event and have their own space. Damp said there’s plenty of room back there, and she has enough chairs to handle almost any size group.
Continued on Page 26
Continued from Page 25
There’s also the proximity to the East Penn Railroad tracks that run just a few feet from the room.
Damp said the trains going by are not a distraction, although they do rattle the bottles on the wall.
“They only come by about twice a day, and it adds to the niche of the place,” she said.
Harvest Ridge is nestled in the tiny village of Toughkenamon, but Damp said the neighbors are “a tight-knit community” who are eager to help each other.
One of the most popular events they have joined was the arrival of Santa Claus on a fire truck and the adjoining festivities at the tasting room afterward. She said it was one of their most popular days.
Damp was asked if people’s desire for certain types or flavors of wines changes as time goes by.
She said simply that history leads almost everything to change.
She cited the example of the public affection for Merlot wine.
In the movie Sideways, the character made the statement, “No more Merlot.”
The wine industry observed that suddenly fewer people were drinking Merlot after that.
What lies ahead for Harvest Ridge in Toughkenamon?
Damp said she has three important goals:
One of them is adding variety and volume to the charcuterie boards so customers have more to choose from.
The second is to enhance the outdoor entertainment area. Currently customers can go out to a patio in the back and enjoy their refreshments. However, they are looking mainly at a parking lot, other buildings and the railroad tracks. In the future, she said, she would like it enlarged, enhanced and a little more elegant.
The third is to reach a larger customer base. She said she is pleased with advertising in the greater Chester County area, but it could reach larger numbers.
Harvest Ridge is at 1140 Newark Road in Toughkenamon, just a few steps from the railroad tracks.
The tasting room is open Thursdays from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays from noon to 8 p.m.; and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m.
Limited reservations are accepted.
To make an appointment for wine pickup on days Heritage Ridge is closed, call 610-636-4871 before 5 p.m.

Lester Water Inc. is beginning its 74th year serving residents in Chester County and the surrounding region. The company specializes in installing and servicing water treatment equipment in homes that are served by wells or municipal water, and anyone who would like to improve the quality of the water in their home.
Owner/operator Dave McKeon explains that there are a variety of reasons a homeowner would be wise to treat their water.
“The first thing I would tell you is we need to get tests done from your well to determine if it’s safe to drink,” he said. “We take samples and a series of tests are done that will tell the homeowner where their water quality stands directly from the well, and if they will need to treat it.”
When water treatment is mentioned, one of the first things that may come to mind is water softeners. These systems can remove hardness, iron and manganese from the water, making it better for washing, bathing and cleaning. Water softeners are also recommended if you have an on-demand hot water heating system.
There are other issues besides water softening that Lester Water Inc. can address as well.
“Each system is designed to solve different problems that can be in the water,” Dave said.
Bacteria in well water is a common problem and an ultraviolet light system can be installed to kill bacteria and provide safe and healthy drinking water for your family.
A Neutralizer filtration system can address the Ph of the water so that your plumbing and appliances are protected from the effects of long-term exposure to acidic water. Providing a neutral water to the appliances that use water in your home is an investment in their capacity to last longer. Reverse osmosis systems reduce dissolved solids in your water which will improve the taste of the water. Reverse osmosis systems also are effective in removing nitrates –a problem that can occur in the agricultural regions like Chester County. Nitrates can not be smelled or tasted. A Reverse Osmosis system can also remove PFAS, a potentially carcinogenic, commercial chemical contaminant found in some wells.
Municipalities provide very good, quality water, but some homeowners may not like the chlorine taste in the water, so they might install a reverse osmosis system to improve the taste and quality.
Dave characterizes household water as either working water (used for appliances and bathing) and drinking water. Dave explains that many people today purchase bottled water at a substantial cost, yet they cook with their tap water and use ice made from tap water. In some cases, the bottled water you buy is processed through a reverse osmosis system. That same process can be done in the home with the result of great tasting drinking water without the cost and nuisance of plastic bottles.
Even though water systems are not inexpensive, they save money over time by helping preserve the effective life of appliances, pipes, and laundry, as well as by eliminating the need for costly bottled water.
Lester Water, Inc. installs well pressure tanks and can take care of the water from your well to your house.
Most of their work comes from word-of-mouth and referrals from satisfied customers. The company serves Chester County, northern New Castle County, nearby Delaware County, and Cecil County in Maryland as far south as Chestertown and Rock Hall, Md.
“When people look to install a water treatment system or are looking for service to their existing system, we stress the importance of our quality of work and training,” Dave said. He is certified as a Master Water Specialist, the highest level by the International Water Quality Association.
“I have been in the water industry over 38 years and my men are top-quality trained,” Dave said. “We believe we provide not only the quality equipment but also the quality of service to our customers. Once you become a Lester Water customer, you have my cell phone number and can reach me any time of the day.”

At Paradocx Vineyard, every sip and every glass of wine tells a little about the more-than-quarter-century-year-old winery in Landenberg.
“Every sip is a great story,” said Trish Brown, Paradocx’s general manager. “We are 26 years old, but it still feels like there’s constant striving to embrace the new and think outside the box.”
One of those new ideas came to fruition Feb. 1 –Paradocx’s latest location in Phoenixville, inside the Tai Me Up restaurant on Bridge Street. Brown described Tai Me Up as boasting “a fantastic, high-end Thai menu.” The name fits in with Paradocx’s, as both are plays on words, she said – the winery’s name refers to its four owners being doctors.
“The owner of Tai Me Up, Jason Dye, is a neighbor, long-standing customer and fan of Paradocx,” Brown said. “We were just talking, enjoying excellent Thai food and great wine, and came up with this great way to better serve his customers and invite new Paradocx customers in Phoenixville.”
Another new idea will be unveiled soon.
“We have exciting new ideas for our wine,” according to Brown. “Mum’s the word now, but please stay tuned.”
The winery has 15 different wines on its current menu, everything from reds to whites to sweet wines. Two
of those red wines, the 2022 Cabernet Franc and the 2022 Chambourcin, are silver medalists from this year’s Pennsylvania Farm Show Wine Competition.
“Wine is a really unique industry,” Brown said. “You grow and harvest fruit in one year, and it’s one, two, three years or more before you release the wine.”
Paradocx won bronze medals in the 2024 wine competition for their 2021 Pinot Gris, their 2021 Cabernet Franc, and their 2023 Pail Pink.
The Cabernet Franc in general is Brown’s personal favorite, which she said could be paired with food or enjoyed by itself.
“I’m a huge fan of wine and chocolates, so a dark caramel with a Cab Franc is outstanding,” she said.
The Cab Franc has “an intense ruby color, aromas of cherries, black olives with hints of fresh coffee and vanilla,” according to the winery’s website.
Other red wines include the Barn Red, described on the website as “a medium bodied wine with aromas of red berries and plums combined with pleasant notes of oak”; the Merlot with “aromas of cherry, earth, and tobacco, with notes of blackberry and cherry, and hints of bell pepper”; and the Chambourcin, which for Paradocx is a dry red.
“It has really good earthy qualities to it, and is fruit forward” Brown said. “It’s an excellent choice with mild cheese or any pasta dish. We have a customer who loves it with grilled cheese sandwiches.”
There are six different white wines currently on the menu – the White Wash, the PDX Chardonnay, the Pinot Grigio, the Vidal Blanc Semi-Sweet, the Vidal Blanc Dry, and the Yield.
The five sweet wines include Spiced Red, the Niagara, Pail Pink, Catawba, T-Wine, and Peach Twine!
Brown said the white grapes provide different ways to challenge the palates.
“We have a solid white program – Pinot Grigio, Pinot Gris, and Vin Gris – which is a fun way to challenge our best palates,” she said. The difference between the three is how the wine is made; the pinot grigio is made in a stainless-steel vat, while the pinot gris matures in a French style.
The vin gris, she said, “touches the skins for a very short period of time,” bringing the wine “a different texture and a little bit of color. Some people call vin gris the orange wine.”
The winery’s commitment to sustainability has been constant throughout their history and will remain so into the future.
“Our core mission is still the same – to be excellent stewards of the land, to make our wine passionately and Continued on Page 32

authentically,” Brown said, adding that the four owners – Drs. David and Carol Hoffman and Drs. Mark and Joanne Harris –make that the way of life at Paradocx.
David is the head winemaker, and his wife Carol is a key to many of the “thinking-outside- the-box” ideas, according to Brown. Mark Harris is the vineyard manager, and Joanne Harris “is committed and focused on sustainability, being excellent stewards of the land, and staying true to the commitment of all our customers, which we all refer to as the Paradocx Family.
We are a family operation. The artwork for all of the labels is done by Alice James, Carol Hoffman’s mother. This includes the fun paint can labels. The story of the paint cans as wine containers comes from gifts in paint cans that someone gave the owners’ puppies.
“They thought what a great gift idea, what if we tested this idea for wine?” Brown said. “They worked to find the best source to offer paint cans and how to make it fall into our sustainable pathway.”
So when a customer buys one of the wines in the customized paint can, they can bring it back to Paradocx for $2 off their next wine purchase, and Paradocx upcycles the used can.
The main Paradocx location on Flint Hill Road in Landenberg hosts events, wine tastings, trivia nights, and more. The winery is family friendly, she said, and offers a small food menu. A calendar on Paradocx’s website has a listing of events for those who would like to plan their visit.
For those who would like to visit but don’t know what wines to try, Brown recommends that they check with the staff for recommendations.
“We have solid offerings for all wine lovers – dry, sweet, white, red, and rose,” Brown said. “We have an exceptional, educated staff led by our tasting room manager Taylor Dunn who can help you find your favorite!
“I want people to know that we can be their resource for wine, events, date nights, and so much more” Brown said. “We want to be part of the family and to help them build memories.”

I’m imagining a weekend afternoon for myself.
I imagine a text I will soon send to my sister.
“On the first warm breeze of the spring,” I tap, “we’re going to Casa Carmen in West Grove with a picnic blanket. No phones.”
A Spanish guitar version of Erik Satie’s “Gnossiennes” tinkles in my mind, as I imagine soaking in the sun and swirling an exotic vermouth cocktail on the rocks. For an entire afternoon I will pretend AI doesn’t exist and the 24-hour news cycle was just an invention from a fever dream.
It would be easy to mistake the bucolic farm of Casa Carmen for the gentle set of a slow summer foreign film. Nestled into a hill just outside of West Grove, the Farm at Casa Carmen opened its doors to the public in April of 2024. Enrique Pallaras and wife Laura, along with his brother Felipe and his wife Jane and all of the children own and live on the property, along with the brothers’ parents.
and these influences are all rolled into Casa Carmen, who produces their wines and vermouths using low intervention practices that work alongside the natural strengths and charms of the area.
“Our biggest seller is Rose - regardless of the time of year,” Jane said. “It’s the first wine that we made. It’s a family favorite and a customer favorite. It’s very fruit forward but 100 percent dry, which means there’s no residual sugar. It really satisfies every palate.”
Here, three generations of families work together to bring the vision of the vineyard and the tasting room to life and cultivate the legacy of Casa Carmen, seasoning the pan with their inspirations, memories, and hope for the future.
“We started the winery in 2017 in Chestertown, Maryland, (The Bodega),” Felipe said. “In 2019, we opened a tasting room downtown which we still have and in 2022, we built this property and we’ve been redoing the barns to be able to open here. We finally opened back in April of last year. This has been an expansion project for the winery.”
The Pallares family hails from Ecuador originally and arrived at West Grove via Florida, California, Argentina, and Spain, picking up a few inspirations along the way,
In addition to Rose, Casa Carmen also produces some whites: Verde, Viognierre, Espumante, and reds: Duende and Tinto.
In particular, there are a few eccentricities that stand out on their menu, like their house made vermouth. A staple of the cocktail menu in the vermuterias of central Spain, vermouth is 95 percent wine and is mixed with grape-based liquor. Closer to liquor than wine as far as “bite” goes, it is generally on the same level as sipping a cocktail or tasting a gin.
“We make two vermouths,” Jane said. “One is white and one is black, and they are made to complement each other. The white is very sunshiny, bright, lemon, green botanicals (The Sun Also Rise). The black is very winter spicesrosemary, anise, cloves, and vanilla so it gets very dark and mysterious (Tender is the Night). They are wonderful. We serve them the way they serve them in Spain, vermuteria-style, on ice with a splash of soda water. It adds a little bubble texture and waters down the alcohol so you can drink for longer.”
“We always love cocktails,” Felipe said. “We work with a lot of botanicals and housemade amaros as well. The Spanish Martini is a family favorite, and one of our best sellers is the Manhattan. We change it around seasonally. You can always get Negronis and Manhattans with the amaros we make in house.”
Continued on Page 36
Continued from Page 34
Casa Carmen sources their liquor from local distilleries: Thistle Finch in Lancaster, Philadelphia Distilling and Hidden Still in Hershey.
In addition to their full menu of wine and cocktails, Casa Carmen has become well known for their tapas that include Spanish meats and Spanish, French and Italian cheeses, tinned fish including sardines, mussels, cod fillet, calamari in ragout, Angry Chips with salsa brava, torched Spanish octopus, and of course, a nod to the local agriculture with some garlic marinated mushrooms.
I inquired about the variety of available tinned fish on the menu.
“Vermuteria Bars very typically serve tin fish,” Enrique said. “It’s part of the fisherman culture of the Basque Country. The tradition was to cure fish in salt or vinegar or put it in the can, and the best catch of the day would go in the tin, so in Spain and Portugal, there’s a big tradition of the best catch of the day going in the tin.”
As I chat with the owners, I’m already wandering around the farm in my mind - popping into the intimate indoor tasting room, and then out onto the tiled and covered gallery, the more open-air pergola, and the sprawling lawn where I have already set up camp with my sunhat and my second drink and enjoying the warm spring breeze that tickles a bare shoulder, all reminding me that I was put on this earth to eat berries in the grass and not to think about Microsoft Excel.
Continued on Page 38
Continued from Page 36
“Our main tasting room is in the old barn,” Jane said. “We renovated the space and maintained as much of the original structure as possible in order to embrace the history of the property. Next to that barn, we have a two-story barn and we have plans for that as we are already feeling the limits of our space.”
While I conjure in my mind dreams that will soon become a reality, I invite you to Casa Carmen for some live jazz on Friday Nights or their salsa class series, that runs for three months in the spring and autumn seasons). Have children? Dogs? They’re welcome at Casa Carmen. The farm also boasts a few horses, chickens and sheep that cull the weeds and provide natural fertilization at the beginning and end of the seasons.
The heritage, the experience and the story of Casa Carmen tells a unique tale that is just beginning to be told.
“Our love for food and wine is really a lifestyle - the communal life that centers around the table,” Jane said. “Casa Carmen is about culture building, uniting and elevating the human experience.”
In the meantime, I will be sitting on my porch waiting for that perfect spring day, when I can pass the time from simmering afternoon sunshine to lavender rising moon, with good friends and a glass of something sparkly, amidst the most charming setting Chester County has to offer.

A business that has spanned four generations with a history of providing service for more than 75 years, DuVall Bus Service is firmly rooted in the community. Families that have grown up in the Avon Grove School District will recognize the company’s school buses that have been safely and dependably transporting students for generations.
The company was first started by Charles W. DuVall, who farmed and operated dump trucks. At that time, the Avon Grove School District only had one contractor providing school bus service. That contractor approached Charles DuVall about taking over one of the bus runs, and that was how the company got into the school bus business.
More equipment was added when Robert DuVall, Charles’s son, was old enough to come into the business. The two worked together farming, driving school buses and dump trucks, and also plowing snow in the winter.
Robert continued to work with his father but went out on his own as well as an over the road trucker, driving a tractor-trailer. When Charles retired, Robert and his wife Frances bought him out. Robert continued to drive a truck and grew that part of the business by buying more equipment and hiring more truck drivers. He also continued to build the bus business along with Frances’s help at home while he was on the road.
The family has had a contract with the Avon Grove School District to provide bus service now for over 75 years. As the area has grown and developed, buses and vans have been added to cover the area’s growing needs. DuVall Bus Service has kept the buses equipped with the latest technology, and now they all have automatic transmissions and surveillance cameras for security. They are still one of the two bus providers to service the district.
Safety is always one of the biggest concerns for DuVall Bus Services. The buses themselves are designed to protect young passengers in the event of an accident. The company is also directly involved in making the decision on delaying or cancelling school in the event of severe weather. When there is a weather event, at around 3 a.m., the company’s head mechanic makes a road tour of the worst roads. He then consults with the district around 4:30 a.m. so that a decision can be made by 5 a.m.
Around 1998, the company purchased their first coach bus and the coach/charter bus side of the business began. Since then, several more coach buses have been added, boosting that part of the business exponentially.
Robert and Frances worked very hard to get the business to where it is today. One important factor in their continuing success has always been the ability to adapt to the needs of the community. In 2005, the trucks were parked due to the economy, but the bus business continued to grow and became the main focus of the company. The company is now in the hands of Sandra DuVall-Wolfe, Robert and Frances’s daughter, who is now the company’s president and manager.
Although DuVall Bus Service is best known for their school buses, they also offer clients high-class transportation in style in their coach buses. They offer vehicles sized for 18 to 22 passengers, 33 passengers, or 56 passengers.
DuVall Bus Service can help with group transportation for a wedding, party, reunion, private trip or religious retreat. The company has different vehicles to accommodate everything from small to large groups. They offer competitive rates and qualified and courteous drivers. For a quote, just
provide your pickup location and a destination, and any stops you want to make on the way—along with start and finish times and the number of passengers.
“We pride ourselves on having the cleanest and nicest well-maintained fleet around, and being on time with the most courteous drivers who are there to make sure that your
event transportation needs are met,” Sandy DuVall-Wolfe said on the company website. “We hope we exceed your expectations.”

Ben and Sarah Cody may not be who you think of when envisioning stereotypical winemakers.
They aren’t particularly fancy, and they weren’t born into the distinguished wine industries of Europe or California. In fact, Ben and Sarah are both fifth-generation farmers from Oklahoma and Indiana, respectively, and their southern and midwestern agricultural roots are evident in the unpretentious nature of their 1723 Vineyards in Landenberg.
For the Codys, they subscribe to the philosophy that wine shouldn’t be intimidating, and they are on a mission to make the winemaking and wine tasting experiences approachable for the average consumer.
Neither Sarah or Ben had past experience in vineyards before opening 1723. Sarah worked at a law firm while Ben worked in and continues to work in cyber security. Their passion for wine began when they were living in Washington, D.C. and visiting vineyards and wineries in
nearby Virginia. Soon after moving to Chester County in 2012, they began to look for land to begin their own vineyard on.
While vineyards come with their own unique challenges and learning curves, the couple’s backgrounds in agriculture gave them the interest and the experience needed to tackle the daunting task of starting a vineyard 10 years ago when they planted their first vines.
“I grew up on a big fruit farm and cattle ranch, and so I had already understood the basics of how to grow fruit, albeit not grapes, but a lot of that knowledge and experience translates,” Ben said.
“We came to this area for other reasons but ended up finding the spot here and planting it,” Sarah said. “We found a wine region that wasn’t already over-saturated.”
Being a part of those early days in the emerging Chester County wine scene meant the Codys had time to experiment and learn their craft without being surrounded by too much competition or early pressure to succeed. The couple received help from Cain Hickey, a current assistant professor of viticulture at Penn State, but when Ben met Hickey at a conference about a decade ago, Hickey was a Ph.D. student at Virginia Tech.
“I recruited him to help me get this started and he’s a Pennsylvania native, so after he graduated, it was kind of natural for him to want to get back to Pennsylvania, so this has been serendipitous,” Ben said. “We’ve had a long-term relationship with him, and he’s been instrumental in helping with our success.”
Viticulture - the growing of grapes - and enology - the science of making wine - can be complicated and frustrating for anyone. From learning what varietals of grape can grow in the Pennsylvania soil to spending years letting them grow before investing in the actual winemaking process, takes time and considerable patience.
The couple shared that they’ve tried about 15 varietals in the vineyard.
“It’s about finding those varietals that function well in the region but also understanding what the demand is in the tasting room,” Sarah said. “What are people really interested in and what are they drinking?”
Some of those successful varietals at 1723 Vineyards include Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Chambourcin, Albariño, Riesling, Petite Arvine and Chardonel. For Sarah’s
side of the business in the tasting room, the couple identified dry wines as being the top demand from local consumers. The couple shared that they both have a preference for dry wines which made it easy for the pair to solely focus on those selections at 1723 Vineyards.
While the Codys said that local consumers seem to have a preference for dry wines, Ben shared that the larger
Continued from Page 43
wine industry has a similar taste. However, he expressed frustration at the industry’s approach in leaning too far away from sweet wines and consequently not making it readily accessible to new audiences.
“One thing I think that’s kind of a negative in our industry is that people have a tendency to look down on folks who drink sweet wines or look down on sweet wines in general, and that’s not really fair. You should drink what you like,” Ben said. “Although we do focus on dry wines, there’s nothing wrong with liking sweet wines. If that’s what you like and if that’s what you make, then that should be celebrated, too.”
This pretension that exists in some pockets of the wine industry is the opposite of what 1723 strives for. The Codys have a foot in both
Continued on Page 46
Continued from Page 44
worlds, one in the exacting and illustrious wine world, and one in the agricultural and unembellished locales of their respective upbringing and current community. It is that combination that gives the pair the unique skill set needed to not only succeed in the local wine scene but to ensure their consumers enjoy in their own forays into wine.
“I don’t spend a lot of time with people who are really pretentious,” Ben said. “If you go to some winery and they’re making you feel dumb then go to a different one. In this industry, we shouldn’t be doing that, but it happens all the time.”
Ben also shared that he loves to “demystify” wine by talking to customers about the process, breaking down the big words and procedures so each person knows exactly the labor of love that went into their bottle. The couple knows
that their customers want a relaxed and honest vineyard experience where wine is casual. That’s why instead of focusing on entertainment value at the vineyard, the couple focuses on tastings and curating an intimate experience that centers on building community.
“We’ve created this community of people that we know and that know us, and it’s helped us to get involved,” Sarah said. “I feel like that’s the value we’re adding, we’re not adding money in the bank, we’re adding value to the community. We decided that we want people to come here and focus more on enjoying the company they’re with.”
In addition to community, family and history are present in everything about 1723 Vineyards. Its name comes from the year New London Township, and a piece of the property was once owned by Benjamin Franklin while he served as ambassador to France. Additionally, the pair learned that Ben had an ancestor with ties to the area in the Revolutionary War, making their location here all the more serendipitous.
The names of the bottles of wine at 1723 Vineyards are also historical with familial ties. Alta is named after Sarah’s grandmother; Josephine is named after Ben’s grandmother and Diamond Bar is named after Ben’s family’s cattle ranch.
Ben shared that he and Sarah have another family name picked out for the next bottle of wine despite not knowing what that wine will be yet.
The mystery of not knowing what’s next and experimenting to find it is part of what keeps Ben and Sarah moving their vineyard forward and bringing their customers along with them.
“We’re just constantly experimenting because our customers push us in terms of exploring what’s new and what’s different,” Ben said.
After ten years of growing, producing and selling wine as part of the growing wine culture in Chester County, the challenge of innovating still hasn’t gotten old. The Codys know more now than they ever had before, not only about vineyards and winemaking, but about their brand ethos and what they hope to continue to offer to the local wine scene.
“I hope everybody knows that 1723 Vineyards is a welcome, unpretentious environment where people can come and relax, enjoy pretty views and enjoy the ones that they’re with,” Ben said. “This is a place for fellowship and camaraderie.”
