Dear Members and Friends,
In the Spring edition of the CONNECTIONS magazine, the notion of Re-Connecting, Re-Engaging and Re-Suming business was highlighted. With the dog days of summer behind us, it is now time to think about the fall business season.
My favorite fall things include the crisp cool mornings, a warm cup of coffee (PSL), anything pumpkin, warm apple cider donuts, golfing (no leaves preferred), and visiting wineries and breweries with family and friends.
From a business perspective (for me anyway), this is the time of year to attend community, civic and networking events; making time to re-connect with business colleagues you lost touch with over the summer; meeting new business community members, and finding ways to help them grow or make introductions.
For our Chamber, things look a little different this fall as we moved our Annual Gala to September. We are looking forward to launching a new (in-person) speaker series ~ Leaders In Motion. The objective of the new series is to bring critical topics to our business community presented by local leaders and share ideas to help us all grow and thrive.
We are thankful for you, our Chamber Members, and to our community partners. We hope the remainder of 2021 provides you with fruitful experiences to connect, grow and thrive in your business. As always, the Chamber is here to guide you in that journey.
All the best,

Betsy Niedziejko SCCCC Chairman of the Board (WSFS Bank)

Dear Members and Friends,
After more than a year and a half of disruption, devastation, and loss caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are finally beginning to see signs of hope and recovery in spite of continued setbacks. However, we also realize that the situation remains difficult for many around our region and beyond. If you are struggling, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. If we cannot provide support, the chances are excellent that we will know someone who can and will.
We are proud to produce the fall issue of CONNECTIONS with our member and partner, Ad Pro, Inc., who also publishes the Chester County Press as well as numerous supplements. As you peruse these pages, take time to read and share the information in our special editorial focus: “The Progression of Change in Adult and Continuing Education.” Through the use of Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and other similar platforms, adult and continuing education offers many opportunities for adult students.
Our exclusive magazine provides a wealth of information, inspiration, and creative ideas for readers, not to mention serving as an excellent resource to connect with Chamber members for your business and personal needs. Take time to connect with our advertisers—and keep the Advertiser Index handy

Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce

By Ken Mammarella Contributing Wrtier
Valuable lessons to make you a more desirable worker and a better person are just a short drive away, thanks to the area’s vibrant colleges and universities. They offer plenty of classes online, as well.
“We want readers to see that there are exciting and convenient opportunities and programs all around,” Cheryl Kuhn, president of the Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce, said in explaining the theme of this issue of Connections magazine.
These institutions, like those in every business sector, quickly pivoted at the start of the pandemic last year, and their plans for this school year may change again, depending on the spread of the virus. They have been transforming their educational offerings while also initiating new ways to serve and enrich their communities. The chamber asked these institutions to share stories about some of their innovations. Here are highlights of the essays that follow.

Delaware County Community College has seven campuses in Chester and Delaware counties, including Pennocks Bridge Campus, in the Chester County Technical College High School in West Grove, with courses in early childhood education, information technology and science. One innovation is online:

Spanish for the Professions, a certification based on two courses. The courses can be used as supplementary preparation for paralegal, early childhood education, business and many other careers.
“Perhaps you are an adult student who wants or needs to re-skill and train for an exciting new career,” president Dr. L. Joy Gates Black said. “Wherever you are in your journey, we are here to help you achieve your goals.”
Lincoln University’s Center for the Study of the Underground Railroad and Voices Underground will host its inaugural conference next spring. “Considering that the Mid-Atlantic was a major hub used to get enslaved Blacks to freedom, this will be a historic conference,” said Dr. Nafeesa Muhammad, assistant professor of history.
The university and the Square Roots Collective also founded Voices Underground, a coalition whose members are united by their commitment to a thriving Kennett Square.
“Voices Underground’s mission is to promote the African American cultural heritage of the Chester County area by creating a world-class public monument and ongoing creative programming in celebration of the Underground Railroad,” said Gregory Thompson, executive director of Voices Underground.
Penn State Extension is dedicated to delivering sciencebased information to people, businesses and communities. Pennsylvania leads the nation in the number of farms that sell directly to the consumer, so the PA Farm Market Finder is an interactive map to more than a thousand of them.
“We can help everyone from business owners to farmers to individuals,” said Carla J. Snyder, an Extension Educator and Associate State Program Leader of the Energy, Business and Community Vitality team.
Other foresighted programs include Under the Ground, a retail coaching program that uses secret shoppers; Food for Profit, for aspiring and growing food businesses; and The Latinx Agricultural Network, which connects educators, students, faculty, administrators and grassroots advisors to the important Latino community statewide. Latinos and Hispanics make up 75 percent of the agricultural workforce in the U.S., and in some Pennsylvania industries, such mushrooms, about 90 percent workers are Latinos.
Penn State College of Agriculture instructors went out to a dairy farm and outfitted a garage with an irrigation system while their students stayed at home. In another class, students were safely assigned to go on a scavenger hunt for fungi near their homes.
The University of Delaware Division of Professional and Continuing Studies has helped businesses chart post-pandemic futures with programs like Business Analysis, Project Management and Social Media Marketing to guide organization.
West Chester University’s Continuing Professional Education customizes seminars and courses for companies to up-skill their staff and maintain their competitive edge. The university, with 17,000 students, is the largest institution in the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education.
Widener University’s Small Business Development Center provided nocost consulting services to help turn the site of the former Community Hospital of Chester into the Silvercare Health Center. The project will create 300 jobs.

Lincoln University, the nation’s oldest degreegranting historically black university, is inviting the public to join a conference on the Underground Railroad. It will take place next spring at the main campus in Lower Oxford.
The university’s Center for the Study of the Underground Railroad and Voices Underground — an organization focused on preserving and sharing the Underground Railroad’s story — will host its inaugural conference: “Seeking Freedom: The Underground Railroad in the Mid-Atlantic.”
The three-day conference will be held Thursday through Saturday, March 31 to April 2, 2022.
This is just one example of the many initiatives Lincoln University has undertaken to achieve the mission to reach out and share itself with the community.
“Considering that the Mid-Atlantic was a major hub used to get enslaved Blacks to freedom, this will be a historic conference,” said Dr. Nafeesa Muhammad, assistant professor of history at Lincoln University and a member of the convening committee. “As the first degree-granting historically black college and university (HBCU) that was a physical site of the Underground Railroad, it is exceptionally interesting to be hosting this inaugural conference.”
The conference organizers recently released a call for papers, panels and roundtables to
historians, preservationists, independent scholars, social scientists, community leaders and undergraduate and graduate students. The organizers are particularly interested in paper proposals that focus on the Mid-Atlantic states of Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, and southern New York.
“We encourage individuals to submit proposals who are researching sites of memory, the role of HBCUs such as Lincoln University and Cheyney University, and the importance of the free and enslaved African American community through the end of the Civil War,” Muhammad said.
The organizers are also seeking papers that explore any or all the diverse complexities of the Underground Railroad, including known and unknown physical sites (homes, corridors, routes) and those that extract the voices of the unheard, invisible and underrated. “We welcome research that demythologizes the story and memory of the Underground Railroad,” Muhammad added.
The conference’s other convening committee members are Dr. Gregory Thompson, the executive director of Voices Underground, an initiative to build a national memorial to the Underground Railroad outside of Philadelphia; and Dr. Paul Finkelman, the president of Gratz College, in Melrose Park, Pennsylvania, a widely published author who is a specialist on slavery, civil rights, race relations, and African American history and has written extensively on Fugitive Slaves Laws and the relationship of slavery to the U.S. Constitution.

Conference registration fees will be $75 in-person, $50 virtual and $30 for students.
In an earlier related event, more than 800 people, including students and local residents, packed the University’s International Cultural Center on Oct. 30, 2019, for a sneak preview of “Harriet,” a film that depicts the life of Harriet Tubman, the legendary Underground Railroad ‘conductor.’
The film, which opened nationwide on Nov. 1, 2019, stars Cynthia Erivo in the title role, along with Janelle Monáe and Leslie Odom Jr.
“I wanted to see the entire representation of the story,” said Fabiola St. Luc, a Lincoln student studying biology from New Jersey. “At times, Hollywood doesn’t fully depict what truly happened in history. I wanted to see how they portrayed Harriet Tubman and the creators did really well and Cynthia Erivo embodied Harriet!”
Vivian Brown, a resident of Kennett Square, attended the film with friends. “This film was moving and impressive,” Brown said. “Last year, I had the opportunity to visit where Harriet [Tubman] lived in New York for a little while. This provided some context and insight into the film.”
The pre-screening was the first of many local events to be presented over the course of the year by Voices Underground (VU), a new local initiative launched by Lincoln University and the Square Roots Collective — a Kennett Square community organization. The organization is a collection of enterprises — for-profit businesses,

nonprofit ventures, formal and informal partnerships, and associations with like-minded organizations—united by their commitment to a thriving Kennett Square.
“Our goal was not only to remind community members of the power of Harriet Tubman’s life and the significance of the Underground Railroad in our community, but also to introduce the work of Voices Underground,” said Gregory Thompson, the executive director of Voices Underground.
“Voices Underground’s mission is to promote the African American cultural heritage of the Chester County area by creating a world-class public monument and ongoing creative programming in celebration of the Underground Railroad,” he added.
Lincoln University President Brenda A. Allen said the presentation of the film in partnership with Square Roots Collective was a sterling example of one of the University’s strategic plan goals: leveraging partnerships to contribute to the cultural life of the community.
Allen also noted that the town of Lincoln University, located just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, was likely a key stop on the Underground Railroad, making this evolving project with Voices Underground very exciting and relevant for Lincoln University today.
“It was terrific to have our students and community members sitting side-by-side experiencing this important, moving film,” she said. “In these troubling times, the undaunted courage that Harriet Tubman displayed again and again is a model for all of us to emulate.”
Lincoln University also spreads its talented arts and music culture beyond the campus.
The Lincoln University Concert Choir is one of the premier organizations on the campus of Lincoln University and

membership is open to all students in any major.
Its vocal prowess and penchant for maintaining the African American choral traditions in their music have allowed the choir to achieve a reputation of excellence on the regional, state, and national levels. The singers who make up this extraordinary choral ensemble hail from all corners of the globe and are pursuing degrees in a variety of academic disciplines.
The Lincoln University Concert Choir members serve as ambassadors for the university by building relationships with communities, touring extensively, and performing recruitment concerts at churches of all denominations and K-12 schools throughout the country. Some of the choir’s most recent tours have

included performing in Los Angeles, California, Atlanta, Georgia, and its international debut in South Africa.
The choir has also been asked to sing the National Anthem at home games for

sports teams including the Philadelphia Phillies and the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2019 and 2020, the choir was also invited to participate in the HBCU Choral Festival at Norfolk State University.
The Lincoln University Concert Choir encompasses some of the greatest talents on campus; including in its ranks are officers of the Student Government Association, the Lincoln University Royal Court, and members from the university’s athletic department.
Lincoln University reaches out to share its physical facilities in the community as well. One such group whose performances have been enhanced by the relationship with Lincoln is the Avon Grove Community Theater, which, until the pandemic hit last year, has performed musicals open to the public in the Ware theater – shows like “The Music Man” and “Thoroughly Modern Millie.”
The theater was built with the support of a grant from the U.S. Rep. John Ware Foundation and has state of the arts facilities for little-theater performances. When the theater is not engaged in its annual summer musicals, it is used for classroom instruction on campus.

Director of Corporate Relations & Strategic Partnerships
Martin Harrison said building relationships between the university and the community is beneficial to both. The administration at Lincoln is well-represented on nearby boards and commissions as well, he added.
“Lincoln is an anomaly among black colleges and

universities. Most of them are in the south and most of them reflect the communities around the campuses,” he said. “[At Lincoln] most of the student body does not reflect the surrounding community. There is sometimes a level of distrust from students from, say, Baltimore and Brooklyn. Sometimes outside the campus they feel like a fish out of water when they leave. Likewise, sometimes, the community doesn’t trust the students.
“There are some areas for us to grow and for the community to grow as well. But it has to be mutual. We have to tear down those barriers. That is our call and our mission,” he concluded.

Pennsylvania leads the nation in the number of farms that sell directly to the consumer. How can a Pennsylvania resident or a visitor to the state locate any of the more than 1,000 farmers markets that offer up the bounty of Pennsylvania’s farms? The Penn State Extension offers the PA Farm Market Finder, an interactive map that allows anyone to search for farmers markets, on-farm retail markets, and public markets—or all three. The markets are color coded to identify what kind of markets they are. People can zoom in on the interactive map to any area of the state, and more information about each farm market, including contact information, is just a click away. The PA Farm Market Finder is just one small illustration of the work that the Penn State Extension does.
The Penn State Extension is a modern educational organization dedicated to delivering science-based information to people, businesses, and communities. That information is sometimes is provided face-to-face through a wide variety of programs that the Penn State Extension plans, and it is sometimes provided online. The goal, according to Carla J. Snyder, is to provide useful information when people want it, where they want it, and how they want it.

“We can help everyone from business owners to farmers to individuals,” said Snyder, an Extension Educator and Associate State Program Leader of the Energy, Business and Community Vitality team.
The PA Farm Market Finder helps connect farm markets with customers. The Penn State Extension has a long tradition of bringing unbiased support and education directly to residents in Pennsylvania. That support can come in many different forms. That, and the education is delivered through a variety of different programs and methods.
According to the Penn State Extension website, the Extension program teams “consist of a collection of educators, associates, and faculty that come together from various units when their expertise is needed.” Many of the program team members live and work alongside the people they are helping, and these teams form unique partnerships with state and county governments to facilitate collaboration with industry, private organizations, and others.
Each program team participates in an ongoing development process to determine what educational programming is needed by citizens, communities and industry sectors across the state. This process includes gathering input from stakeholders and customers to ensure that the Extension Teams are working to find timely, research-based solutions in the areas people care about most.
Snyder mentioned just a few programs that the Penn State

Extension is working on currently to address issues in the state. She explained that Under the Ground is a retail coaching program that utilizes secret shoppers and provides businesses with comprehensive solutions to enhance their food and beverage operations. The Extension provides customized surveys, solutions, and strategies tailored to the business to enhance merchandising and customer service to help a business stand out in the marketplace.

Another program is Food for Profit, which provides specialized education for aspiring and growing food businesses. This program offers a mix of modules that owners can select to fit their business needs. Topics include financing your business, marketing, business structure, e-commerce, record keeping, food safety, partnerships and conflicts, and recruitment and retention.
In conjunction with the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau, the Penn State Extension is offerings a program focused on leasing land for utility-scale solar in the Commonwealth. This is an illustration of how Penn State Extension identifies an issue of importance and then offers a solution, as increasing numbers of landowners in Pennsylvania are being approached to lease their land to be a part of a large solar facility.
The series helps these landowners to understand the implications of the process they may encounter after a solar energy company contacts them.
Maria Gorgo, who is a Food Safety, IPM and Water Quality Extension Educator and part of the Extension’s Horticulture Team, pointed to The Latinx Agricultural Network as an example of how the Penn State Extension is making a difference in the community. The Latinx Agricultural Network is a Community of Practice in Penn State Extension designed to serve the needs of the Latino community in Pennsylvania. A team of educators, students, faculty, administrators, and grassroots advisors are working strategically to enhance outreach and education efforts across all sectors of the Penn State Extension portfolio to connect to a growing community in the state.
According to the recently announced results of the 2020 National Census, the Latino population in the U.S., which includes people of any race, was 62.1 million in 2020. The Latino population grew by 23 percent since 2010, while the population that was not of Latino origin grew by

4.3 percent during the same time. Latinos and Hispanics make up 75 percent of the agricultural workforce in the U.S., and in some Pennsylvania industries, such as the mushroom industry, about 90 percent of the workers are Latinos. The Latinx Agricultural Network has undertaken several initiatives to increase communication, build collaboration, and expand resources to the Latino community.
Outreach to and support for the Latino community can take many forms—everything from creating a new Facebook page that is in Spanish to planning leadership training sessions in Spanish for farm supervisors. Through a collaborative effort among the Horticulture, Latinx Agricultural Network, and Leadership and Community Vitality teams, 46 participants representing 10 farms and five organizations participated in the Leadership Training in Spanish Language for Farm Supervisors program training. A survey after the training sessions revealed that 95 percent of the participants thought the training was helpful, with 67 percent saying that it was significantly helpful.

The Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences traces its roots to 1855 and is widely recognized as one of the nation’s top institutions for agricultural research and education programs.
It’s no surprise, then, that the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences would also be a leader when it came to finding new and improved ways of engaging with students.
The AG Science Magazine recently highlighted how some of the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences instructors responded to the challenges that the pandemic presented.
Julian Avery, an assistant research professor of wildlife ecology and conservation for Penn State, knew that he couldn’t just transition to lecturing on Zoom to the students in his Amphibians and Reptiles course—it was designed to be taught in person and in the field.
“We typically spend the whole time outside looking at animals and their habitats,” Avery told AG Science Magazine. “I had no idea how I was going do that remotely.”
Since he couldn’t take the students into the field, Avery decided to do his best to bring the field to the students. He went out to the sites on his own, filmed and photographed habitats and animals, and used the images to create interactive lessons. Ultimately, he said, he was pleased with the outcome, but it didn’t compare to the real deal. “It was really hard for the students,” Avery explained. “Many of them look forward to taking this class as seniors with the expectation that it’s going to be a lot of fun. I think they were disappointed because it was their last chance to do something big like this at Penn State.”
Instructors across the Penn State campus shared Avery’s frustration, and they set out to find creative ways to deliver content to students.
“Our faculty and staff moved to remote instruction with less than a week’s notice, and last fall many of them had to create ‘mixed-mode’ courses,” said Tracy Hoover, associate dean for undergraduate education in the college. “That required a high level of creativity, work, and planning from an instructional and assessment perspective.”
Bradley Jakubowski, an instructor in the Department of

Plant Science who teaches Golf Course Irrigation Management, explained that one of his primary concerns was keeping his students engaged. “I usually include a lot of hands-on activities,” he told AG Science Magazine. “I didn’t know how I was going to be able to do that online.”
Jakubowski decided to demonstrate the hands-on activities on video. He converted his garage into a classroom outfitted with a set of display tables showing irrigation system components and a variety of quick-reference items and visuals hanging on the back wall. He installed an entire irrigation system, complete with water hookup, and walked his students through the various assembly techniques. On Zoom, the class worked together to disassemble and reassemble various irrigation system components. This helped keep the students engaged.
Penn State University utilized a flexible mix of inperson, remote, and online instruction during the fall semester of 2020.
To prepare for her fall Advanced Dairy Herd Management course, Lisa Holden, associate professor
of dairy science, visited the dairy farm where under normal circumstances she would have taken students on an inperson field trip, and took photos and videos with which to build a virtual field trip. The virtual field trip ended with a Zoom session with the farm owner, a nutritionist, and reproductive specialists.
Instructors worked hard to create in-person opportunities for students whenever possible.
Gretchen Kuldau, an associate professor of plant pathology and environmental microbiology explained, ”(W)e [Kuldau and María del Mar Jiménez Gasco] spent the summer preparing our class with a variety of activities to help our students stay engaged.”
One strategy Kuldau and Jiménez Gasco, associate professor of plant pathology and environmental microbiology, used during lectures was to divide the students into breakout rooms to discuss particular questions.
“This worked really well,” said Kuldau. “I think it empowered students who might not normally have spoken up to have their voices heard, maybe not directly, but through the group spokesperson.”
To make the course more hands on, the instructors

prepared kits for each student containing the supplies for growing oyster mushrooms on toilet paper rolls and for observing fungi growing out of plant seeds. They also threw in a few fungal snacks.
Kuldau said the team normally takes students on a walk around campus to show them fungi up close.
“To provide them with an alternative, we created a scavenger hunt so they could go out near their homes and hunt for fungi,” she said. The students took photos of what they found so they could share them with the class on Zoom.
Jiménez Gasco added that offering the course remotely allowed the team to closely consider what they wanted to accomplish and how they could be more creative than usual in delivering it. “We found that some of the new activities worked out better than we thought they would,” she said, adding that some of the activities will remain for in-person teaching.

Serving learners from preschool age through postretirement age, the University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) provides educational opportunities for anyone seeking to enhance their academic or professional skills, begin or complete their college career or enrich their personal life. UD PCS also offers customized education services to businesses, organizations and professional associations within our geographic region.
As the adult and nontraditional learners’ portal to the University of Delaware, UD PCS impacts thousands of students each year by providing them access to UD credit courses and degree offerings, professional development courses, certificate programs, specialized conferences, workshops and lifelong learning member cooperatives throughout the state. Whether an individual wants to begin a degree, complete a degree, gain credentials, prepare for standardized tests or participate in lifelong learning opportunities, UD PCS has a program or course for them.
“Learning does not stop after high school or college; it continues throughout one’s lifetime,” said George Irvine, associate vice provost for Professional and Continuing Studies. “Truly focused on lifelong learning, UD PCS is proud to serve local,

national and global learners and organizations through our high-quality and workforce-relevant programs.”
As every individual has undoubtedly experienced in his or her professional and personal life, the COVID-19 crisis confronted everyone with a set of challenges that nobody could have anticipated. Though there certainly was an adjustment period, UD PCS has not missed a beat and remained steadfast in our commitment to our learners.
As members of the community we serve, UD PCS’ unwavering focus is on what we can do for each student our neighbors and our friends, and are concerned about everyone in the region and is continuing to do its part to aid in the ongoing recovery. It is pleased to help those affected take the next steps forward by providing indemand programming supported by financial assistance and complemented with free seminars. Along with scholarships, UD PCS offers payment plans as well as discounts for early registration, active military members and veterans, memberships in business associations, groups of two or more, and UD students and alumni.
“The continuous need for lifelong learning does not cease during a global pandemic, so UD PCS is proud to provide just-in-time education to community members who have been adversely affected by COVID-19,” said Irvine.

“Despite new challenges, we will continue to help learners of all ages upskill, reskill and refocus.”
Throughout the pandemic, UD PCS has been able to draw some comfort by seeing how many of its programs are providing training for professions and skills that have had substantial increases in the need for proficient practitioners. Healthcare has justifiably been in the spotlight, and its Advanced Telehealth Coordinator, Clinical Trials Management and RN Refresher programs have proven to be quite timely and necessary, and there continues to be numerous employment opportunities for people with these skills.
Businesses have been forced to rethink their strategies and chart new courses. UD PCS programs like Business Analysis, Project Management and Social Media Marketing provide the vehicles to guide an organization on the best route.

Many of the critical decisions and actions taken by healthcare, business and other professionals are driven by data from information technology professionals. To complement UD PCS’ Predictive Analytics and Data Mining course, previously known as Analytics: Optimizing Big Data, it recently introduced a Foundations of R for Data Analysis class that was prompted by requests from former students.
Along with taking pride in its programs that provide professional preparation or put the student in a position to advance, UD PCS is pleased to present lifelong learning opportunities for those who may have wrapped up their careers or are just looking to expand their knowledge in a friendly environment. Hosting one of the earliest and largest lifelong learning programs in the country, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) is open to adults aged 50+ to take and teach classes together, with course offerings determined by member interest as well as the passions and expertise of the dedicated volunteer member-instructors, with no grades, exams or educational prerequisites.
OLLI members have provided great support to UD PCS’ commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in its services, programs and operations, and its focus on partnering with the larger UD community to work toward a common goal of making the University of Delaware a welcoming and inclusive institution. A member-led Diversity Committee developed initiatives for creating a welcoming and inclusive OLLI climate with initiatives that included mentoring elementary school students, tutoring adults, promoting introductory membership certificates in underrepresented communities, and launching a Celebration of Cultures.
Along with having a local impact, the UD PCS reach extends beyond the borders of Delaware and the region. In 2020, learners in 57 countries across six continents participated in UD PCS noncredit programs. Over the last few years, UD PCS has presented its Clinical Trials Management program to students in India, met with Haiti Ambassador Hervé H. Denis about potential education opportunities for his country, and supported the International Coaching Apprenticeship in Basketball Certificate program and the International Coaching Enrichment Certificate Program. While it does not have a crystal ball to predict the future, UD PCS is doing all it can to help each students navigate the changing landscape by providing top-flight programming to prepare them to excel professionally and personally. different programs and services that WCU offers that can be beneficial in today’s quickly changing world.
The University’s robust Continuing Professional Education (CPE) program provides training to businesses in the tri-state area through a variety of topical seminars and courses. According to Eileen Jenkins, director of CPE, these customized courses, certificate programs and workshops are beneficial to organizations and individuals in pursuit of the next step toward developing their career or business.
WCU’s Continuing Professional Education works with businesses to create meaningful content that will fit the company’s specifications, including the location, budget, and training timeline that suits the business. Flexibility is important for this audience. There are in-person and virtual sessions, and the experts who provide the training offer real-world knowledge and experience that adds value

for a greater return on investment for the business and its employees.
Continuing Professional Education also participates as a certified WEDnetPA partner and is able to administer the WEDnet training grant, which provides financial help to Pennsylvania companies to up-skill staff and maintain their organization’s competitive edge.
Andre J. Richburg, the executive director of WCU’s Graduate School, said that many professionals today are finding that they need an advanced degree to achieve what they want in their professional lives.
“It has become more and more important to have a master’s degree,” Richburg explained. “The master’s degree trend has been building for the last decade, and today there are a lot more jobs out there that require it.”
For those individuals who have been in a career and need an additional degree to reach the next level, or for those who are looking to transition to a new career, the Graduate School at WCU is an accredited and affordable option. With more than 80 certificate, master’s and doctoral degree programs, including in-person, hybrid, and fully online delivery methods, WCU offers plenty of opportunities and support to help people with busy lifestyles earn the degree they need.
“While we do offer some full-time programs, like our new physician assistant master’s degree program or the doctor of psychology program with on- and off-campus clinical rotations, the majority of our programs are designed for working professionals,” Richburg said. “Our main demographic is working full-time and juggling advanced courses with home and work life, so our programs emphasize flexibility. The University has seven colleges, and we offer graduate programs through six of them, so we try to meet the needs of all of those colleges as well as their students.”
WCU offers graduate programs through the Colleges of Arts and Humanities, Business and Public Management, Education and Social Work, Health Sciences, the Sciences and Mathematics, and the Wells School of Music.
The University’s steady growth over the last decade is no accident. In addition to working collaboratively with local businesses and boards to introduce in-demand programs, like the bachelor’s degree in pharmaceutical product development, WCU has intentionally moved beyond its own borders to provide more options to students.
One example of this is the University’s presence in Center City. West Chester University in Philadelphia offers the same top-ranked, accredited degree programs that are available on main campus in a convenient downtown location.
Joseph H. Santivasci, the senior associate vice president of financial aid and campuses, said that the programs at the Philadelphia location are designed for adult learners who are balancing multiple priorities. That means offering part-time and evening courses as well as online options so a person can pursue the education they need while also balancing everything else in their life.
“It’s about convenience and flexibility, and about meeting the students where they are,” said Santivasci.
He added that WCU in Philadelphia features state-of-theart classrooms and experienced faculty with a full array of support services, all designed to meet the unique needs of adult students. Additionally, WCU offers students attending the Philadelphia campus reduced tuition and fees, making the programs among the most affordable in the entire region.
Santivasci also pointed to a partnership with Delaware County Community College as another example of how WCU has expanded beyond its borders to boost convenience for students. West Chester University and Delaware County Community College signed an on-site degree completion agreement that allows students to earn both their associate and bachelor’s degree at the Community College.
Delaware County Community College graduates with an A.S. in Business Administration degree (or other associate degrees with the required business prerequisite courses) can earn a B.S. in Business Management degree from WCU without ever having to leave the Marple Campus. Students can also choose between a minor in Business Law or an internship to make their resumés stand out even more.
WCU and Delaware County Community College also offer a concurrent nursing degree program. Students can earn an associate degree in applied nursing while concurrently taking bachelor of science in nursing courses through WCU. The agreement allows students to earn both their AASN and their BSN in just 24 to 30 months. The agreements offer students convenience of location, ample free parking, and on-site admissions and academic advising from WCU representatives. Students can take University courses online and/or at the College’s main campus in Marple Township.
“It’s been a great partnership,” Santivasci said. For more information about any of the programs that West Chester University offers, visit www.wcupa.edu.

Widener University’s Small Business Development Center (SBDC) prides itself on helping businesses start, grow, and prosper in southeastern Pennsylvania.
One of the SBDC’s exciting recent successes was providing no-cost consulting services to help turn the 13.7-acre site of the former Community Hospital of Chester into the Silvercare Health Center, a location for high-quality medical and senior care in the region.
With help from the SBDC, Everest Urgent Care opened in Chester in September 2020. Everest represents the first phase of a $42 million investment into the future Silvercare Nursing & Rehabilitation Facility.
This immense project—spanning five years, five buildings, and over 300,000 square feet—will not only increase access to healthcare for Chester

residents, it will create hundreds of jobs.
“The project is a major milestone for Widener’s SBDC; it is the largest client in terms of financial investment that the SBDC has ever served,” said SBDC Director Lenin Agudo. “The Widener SBDC is pleased to have assisted Dr. Xiaobin Li and Dr. Guofang Wang of the Silvercare Health Center team in the launch because of the positive economic impact this will create in Chester.”
Agudo began working with Dr. Wang and Dr. Li in the summer of 2018, after meeting the physicians at a Chester City Council meeting.
The Widener SBDC team learned about their operations and explored how to assist with no-cost professional consulting services. The SBDC supported them with various aspects of the project, including understanding city ordinances and economic development incentives, determining the overall financial feasibility, and accessing capital financing.
Widener School of Business Administration students in the Management 451 course also played a key role by designing a marketing plan, providing market research, and outlining the process and requirements to request 200 long-term care beds from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Then, graduate assistants helped package the information.
“These hands-on learning experiences will serve the Widener students in their career paths,” Agudo said. “Likewise, the

Silvercare project will truly benefit the City of Chester. This is the largest economic development project in the city in many years based on the size of the facility and complexity of the project.”
The SBDC has been named one of only two Pennsylvania Centers of Excellence for Health Care and Life Sciences, a recognition that comes with the hard work needed at the development phase of starting a new business like Silvercare.
Nariah Williams, a 2019 management alumna with a concentration in human resources, worked with a team in an upper-level management class consulting for the Silvercare project. Her team benchmarked competing companies in the tri-state area, devised a general business plan for the Silvercare team, and then Williams herself dove into researching how the business would impact the local Chester community.
“Through Widener I got a lot of different experiences and perspectives on the business world in class, but this was hands-on life experience,” Williams said. “Knowing I was able to contribute to a business actually being able to open is the best part.”
Williams currently works in management but notes that the

consulting experience she got with this SBDC project at Widener has honed her project management and people skills even further.
“Working on this project really helped me learn how to work with people from different backgrounds with different experiences, and it also taught me how to manage a big project with many layers,” she said. “Those layers are all things I can do now: I know how to make a business plan and how to manage multiple

small projects or one huge project because I had this experience.”
August Axtman, who worked as a graduate assistant at the SBDC while earning an MBA, also helped advance the project and documented the work.
“We help everyone from the guy who’s mowing lawns and needs help organizing his finances on Excel to this team running a $42 million project over the course of the next five years,” Axtman said. “The scope of our work is incredible.”
Axtman said the opportunity to work with the SBDC played a huge part in his decision to come to Widener.
“Before I applied for my graduate assistantship, I didn’t know that SBDCs existed. However, the opportunity to gain real-world business experience while getting my MBA was something I couldn’t turn down,” Axtman said. “Now I’m rubbing shoulders with small business owners everyday, getting to pick their brains about their business experiences while also helping them grow their livelihoods. Everyday I’m learning something new.”

The Silvercare team wanted to open a facility in Chester to empower a community that currently faces disparity in healthcare compared to other nearby cities.
“We wanted to help people with low or no income, those from different ethnic groups that may struggle with

language barriers, and those who don’t know where to look for healthcare and the benefits they are supposed to be able to get,” Li said. “We wanted to help the seniors in the community specifically but also on this campus we’re creating over 300 jobs in the local community.”
That commitment to community is vital to all levels of Widener’s and SBDC’s work, Agudo said.
“One of the pillars of the university is community engagement, and community engagement is the core of the SBDC,” he said. “Creating specialized jobs to bring wealth to the community and certainly the providing of healthcare checks off a lot of economic development metrics that make communities prosperous.”
In the next phase of the project, Silvercare will be expanding to include hundreds of long-term senior care units and a drug and alcohol rehabilitation center. Li and Wang said they look forward to continuing to work with the SBDC.
“The SBDC has helped us in whatever way we needed ever since we started working with them,” they said. “From strategic planning to government relations to project financing, we could not have done it without their expert consulting.”

Seismic changes in higher education are occurring as universities and colleges rethink how best to serve students recovering from the personal, economic and social aftershocks of the coronavirus pandemic. One area of higher education that is increasingly drawing attention is Continuing Education — generally speaking, shorter-term educational or training programs, often taken by adults, to learn additional or complementary workplace skills or credentials for career preparation and advancement.
Even before the pandemic, many people were reconsidering the traditional four-year college route to a career in part because of the exorbitant cost of many colleges and universities. Now, many people are finding continuing education to be a less expensive, shorter-term, alternative that can quickly lead to family-sustaining-wage careers.
For decades, Delaware County Community College has offered quality, affordable, accessible workforce programs to residents of Chester and Delaware Counties. Courses range from nurse aide, welding and information technology to early childhood education, medical coding and art. Courses are taught in person at one of the College’s seven locations in Chester and Delaware Counties, virtually or

through hybrid class formats that combine in-person and virtual instruction.
At its Pennocks Bridge Campus, in the Chester County Technical College High School in West Grove, the college offers courses in early childhood education, information technology, as well as science courses that can help fulfill requirements in a variety of allied health career programs.
Many economists say that the traditional fouryear-college-to-career route is not necessarily for everyone.
“The truth is that many Americans don’t need a traditional four-year college degree to enjoy a prosperous life,” said Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia president and CEO Patrick Harker during a May 2021 virtual symposium on higher education, financial viability and the impact of the pandemic. “What they need are the skills that will propel them into middleclass jobs. For my dad, my uncles, and my brother, that was pipefitting. And for many, that’s still a great option. For others, it will be something else. Many skills today are gained through a variety of short-term

programs that do not lead to degrees but can provide marketable new skills. These courses can be as short as two months, and workers — many of whom are in their mid-career and are looking to retool, stand to benefit.”
Although Continuing Education options have existed for decades, they are gaining more traction today as unusual trends are surfacing in the U.S. job market due to COVID-19 and other factors. In July, U.S. unemployment declined to 5.4 percent, still above pre-pandemic levels; at the same time, job openings reached a record high of 10.1 million, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics, calls this unusual circumstance of so many fewer people working amid so many available job openings the “Alice-in-Wonderland” job market. In a recent column in The New York Times, Zandi attributed this to many aging baby boomers having permanently left the job market during the pandemic, the rapid reopening of the economy earlier this year as vaccinations became widely distributed, and the almost 6 million parents, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, who had to stay home to take care of children going to school online.
But there is a silver lining: fewer baby boomers in the job market means more jobs for younger adults; the continued U.S. economic recovery is providing more and better career options for those seeking work; and schools are again opening for in-person instruction, freeing parents to return to work. As the nation rebounds, it is critically important that higher education institutions like Delaware County Community College provide a full range of options that meet the needs of residents and employers.
“Perhaps you are an adult student who wants or needs to re-skill and train for an exciting new career. Wherever you are in your journey, we are here to help you achieve your goals,” said Delaware County Community College president Dr. L. Joy Gates Black.

Two relatively new Continuing Education options offered by the college are its Spanish for the Professions certificate courses. These online courses were made possible through a federal grant designed to expand access to Spanish language and cultural education and to enhance employment options for students in professional fields with demand for workers with Spanish language and Spanish cultural knowledge. With the federal grant, the College created Open Educational Resources (OER) for introductory and intermediate Spanish courses and the new certificates in Spanish for the Professions. The OER eliminates textbook costs for students.
“Studies have shown that students who begin a course without a textbook are more likely to withdraw from or fail the course,” said Dr. Terri Amlong, the College’s Dean of Communication, Arts and Humanities and the project director for the grant.
“OER course materials are free and available to the students from the first day of class, so students save money and increase their chances of succeeding.”
The Spanish language certificates, which can be
earned simultaneously with an associate degree, give students in a variety of professional fields access to marketable skills at a time when many employers are looking for bilingual candidates or those with a basic understanding of Spanish. Spanish for the Professions 1 is designed for people interested in acquiring basic Spanish language skills. Spanish for the Professions 2 is for students interested in acquiring Spanish language skills to communicate at an intermediate level in professional Spanish. Both can be used as supplementary preparation for paralegal, early childhood education, business and many other careers. To learn more about the College’s Spanish for the Professions certificates, see dccc.edu/spanish-certificates or call 610-359-5391.
In addition, students in select certificate programs who plan to advance directly into the workforce following graduation may qualify for tuition assistance ranging from $500 to $5,000 through the College’s Kelleher Connect Career Opportunity Fund. For more information, visit dccc. edu/Kelleher.
“At Delaware County Community College, we are futurefocused and ready to assist students as we all move beyond the pandemic,” said Dr. Gates Black.
