A Message from the President

When I returned from this year’s program, I realized how thrilling it was to see everyone, for we had not been together in person since 2019. Reconnecting with Board members, chatting with faculty members I’ve come to know, spending time with peers from around the country, and supporting attendees, helped me remember how much serving in this industry means to me, both professionally and personally - this makes me happy.

Senior communities like Friends Home in Kennett, Jenner’s Pond, Kendal~Crosslands Communities, and The Residence at Chadds Ford can provide important levels of care for aging adults. In this issue, you’ll find profiles of a few of the senior communities like these that are helping to meet the needs of the aging population in southern Chester County and the surrounding areas. Each one finds ways to create unique experiences and services for residents.

Senior communities meet the needs of aging residents

Building a sense of community is a consistent theme for these senior living communities, and that’s definitely true for the Friends Home, which has a slogan of “Where friends become family.”

At Jenner’s Pond, its mission is simple: to offer the highest level of senior care available, with living options and medical attention that give residents and their families the peace-of-mind needed when making such a major deci-

According to U.S. Census data, people aged 65 and older already make up 19 percent of Pennsylvania’s overall population. Here in Chester County, 17 percent of the population is over the age of 65—and more people reach that age every day.

This community features month-to-month rentals and offers Independent Living, Personal Care and Reflections Memory Care options in an attractive, 88-apartment structure.

The Friends Home in Kennett has been a staple in the Kennett Square area, and a resource for senior citizens, for more than 124 years. Being situated in the heart of downtown Kennett Square allows residents here to actively participate in all that the town has to offer. There are obvious benefits to being located so close to the local shops, restaurants, the library, and churches.

Chester County is a wonderful place to live and work, so it’s no surprise that many people want to spend their golden years in this area enjoying all the amenities—the shops and restaurants, the access to health care and the country living.

We are pleased to highlight how some of the senior communities in the area are meeting the diverse and changing needs of an aging population, and by doing so they are helping to make southern Chester County a stronger community as a whole.

The desire to lead your best life certainly doesn’t wane as you get older. For many, moving to a senior community –whether it be to live independently or with some level of care – is a way to maintain that quality of living without the responsibilities that come with home ownership.

For those seniors and their loved ones looking for a welcoming and accessibly placed community, The Residence at Chadds Ford has a way of life that enables residents to enjoy and explore their days highlighted by “good times, good friends and great care.”

Graul said that some residents who are enthusiastic about The Residence at Chadds Ford often want to share their passion.

Graul said. “There are so many opportunities that we have here within our community where we can help elevate people and lift them up on their past occupations, their hobbies or interests to make their light shine from within and really grow their inner interest, because they have so much to bring to the table. M. Davis & Sons, Inc., a 152-year-old, fifthgeneration, family-owned industrial construction company, is coming to Kennett Square. The firm is coming to 227 Daylesford Court, Kennett Square, where there will be offices for executives, project managers, accounting, and human resources, as well as a 60,000 square feet of fabrication space.

“What we found is there is a market for modular construction, and that market is growing,” Buonopane said. “We don’t necessarily design the process. The client has the process design, and they are trying to figure out how to get it into a modular skid that we make, ship, test, and install.”

The process is constructed on a skid within a steel framework. The unit can then be dropped into a plant, with M. Davis & Sons, Inc. available to make the connections needed to get it running. “We work with our clients to build the process skid, and once shipped to their facility, we have crews available to install and maintain the process,” Buonopane said. The modular units are not only cost-effective; they are easily removed and allow for more fluidity in making changes in the manufacturing process.

M. Davis & Sons, Inc., takes on projects primarily in Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey but has also done projects as far as South Carolina and Kansas.

M. Davis & Sons, Inc. is proud of its history as a fifthgeneration family-owned business. The fifth generation to run the business is CEO Peggy (Davis) Del Fabbro. She is proud that the firm is a certified Woman Owned Business through the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council.

In a related effort, the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance is also working to expand programs that reach underserved communities. “A lot of those community members have grown up in urban environments, so they have not been exposed to nature. We want to get their feet off the concrete,” Jordan said.

The Brandywine Red Clay Alliance has eight preserves totaling nearly 1,100 acres with an additional 1,300 acres under conservation easement.

“Currently, we have four additional land preservation projects in progress in Chester County,” Jordan said.

The Brandywine Red Clay Alliance has its roots in a time before watershed protection was considered an important issue. In 2015, the Alliance was formed by the merger of the two oldest non-profit small watershed organizations in the country.

In April of this year, to broaden its impact, the Brandywine Red Clay Alliance merged with the Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County. This will result in a closer connection with the Kennett Square and New Garden area communities. “We are excited because this most recent merger will expand our land preservation efforts in the region,” Jordan said.

“It gives us another hub to do environmental education in the Kennett area. The costs of a merger are expensive, but longterm we’re going to be more efficient,” Jordan said. “What

I first meet with prospective residents, I ask them to ask questions of the experts – the people who already call Jenner’s Pond their home,” said Dawn Lytle, director of sales and marketing. “It’s not easy to decide to move from a home that you may have owned and lived in for the last 40 to 50 years and where you raised your family, nor is it easy to

Jenner’s Pond offers its residents an abundant social calendar, and as many as 40 different clubs to belong to.

“Our entire family of staff takes pride in working in a full continuum of care with our residents, to the point where they feel like an extension of our own family,” Lytle said.

Jenner’s Pond also offers an extensive home care option that allows couples and individuals to receive skilled assistance while still living in their home -- from short one-hour time periods to 24-7 care – who take care of tasks like meal preparation, laundry, light housekeeping, errands and grocery shopping, medication reminders, bathing, dressing, and grooming. Scheduling can range from short, one-hour blocks to 24/7 home care.

“For those whose families happen to live a distance from them here, it is important that they receive that same caring and nurturing that they receive from their loved ones.

“It is so common to see our staff walk up to our residents with memory or mobility issues and simply ask them, ‘How is your day going?’ Maybe they are in pain, or maybe they miss their family, and a kind word can go a long way.”

“The most important part of Friends Home is that we are a part of the community,” said Jennifer Dischert, the executive administrative assistant for the senior living community.

In a recent newsletter, Friends Home executive director Christine McDonald talked about that community concept.

Its slogan is “Where friends become family,” and that is visible in both the role of Friends Home in the community and in its role in the lives of residents. A description on its website, fhkennett.org, talks of how Friends Home is “a place where life is comfortable, relationships are rewarding, and friends truly become family.”

“Every day I see our residents thrive by being with others, and it’s not just ‘being with,’” McDonald wrote in the newsletter. “It is an outpouring and an intaking of spirit.”

Friends Home in Kennett has been a staple in the Kennett Square area, and a resource for senior citizens, for more than 124 years.

Dischert said the goal of Friends Home is to be a resource for both the town and the residents in the community.

“Being in the heart of downtown Kennett Square allows residents to actively participate in all the town has to offer. Local shops, library, churches, the YMCA, Rotary Club, and senior center are all around us,” Dischert said. “Volunteering at events that support local families is also something we take part in. The integration into this town gives residents of Friends a true feeling of home.”

Senior communities like Friends Home can provide an important level of care for aging adults, as people aged 65 and older make up 17 percent of Chester County’s residents and 19 percent of Pennsylvania’s population, according to 2021 U.S. Census data. Dischert said when seniors and their families get to the point where they look for senior housing, it can be a confusing or overwhelming process.

Friends Home also has respite care, which Dischert described as helping both seniors and their families.

“The elderly can feel isolated at times, while families can feel overwhelmed providing round-the-clock care,” she said. “Respite stays are a wonderful way to address this.”

The tourism and hospitality industry are vital to both the economy and quality of life in Chester County. Second only to agriculture in job production and economic impact, tourism is a key factor in the county’s success. A network of assets including attractions, accommodations, wineries, breweries, arts, history and more, make the county a desirable region in which to live, work and play.

The Chester County Conference & Visitors Bureau (CCCVB) is the designated tourism promotion agency for Chester County. Strategies are aimed primarily at generating out-ofmarket visitors, with tactics ranging from marketing to sales and service of leisure travelers, corporate/meeting/social groups, amateur sports tournaments, international guests, and special event-goers. All which bring visitors to town who infuse dollars into our destination -- $1.8 billion in 2019. This number doesn’t include businesses who benefit indirectly, such as HVAC companies, plumbers, landscapers, printers, photographers, florists, even farmers who grow food for our culinary providers. The CCCVB maintains the Brandywine Valley Tourism Information Center at 300 Greenwood Road in Kennett Square right outside the gates of Longwood Gardens. The center welcomes visitors Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Charming towns and villages cover the Chester County countryside and are treasures of a time gone by and a major attraction to visitors. Many feature lovely tree-lined streets filled with, shops, galleries, and delectable dining. Kennett Square is known for being the Mushroom Capital of the World, as the region produces over 60% of the nation’s crop. Artwork, clothing, jewelry, pottery, rare books, teas, and mushrooms make Kennett Square a gift-buyers paradise.
