We are a SMALL TOWN…hosting a BIG RACE…supported and surrounded by our STRONG COMMUNITY.
The Kennett Run Charities was established in 1989 by local community service groups with the purpose of promoting the general well-being and civic betterment of Kennett Square area residents, organizations and projects. It has been our honor to support the needs of our community for 27 years!
The 27th Annual Kennett Run, to be held on May 14, will be the first for new leadership for The Kennett Run Charities. With new Race Director, J. J Simon, we have spent the past year meeting with local business owners to attract new sponsors and promotions to increase the number of runners for race day and Kennett Run Charities contribution to the local nonprofit community.
Our one-of-a-kind multi-faceted event offers multiple running and power run events for all ages and abilities including the 1-mile run, 5K and 10K as well as the popular 5K and 10K PoweRun. We’re pleased this year to continue the FundRun. Elementary school children who participate in the Kennett Run indirectly raise money for their school! This unique concept in that by just participating, gives directly back to our schools in the Kennett and Unionville Districts.
This all volunteer community event is planned, organized and staffed by hundreds of community volunteers along with Rotarians and members of the Kennett Square Lions Club. What makes this day so special is the community involvement in activities that promote better health! After the race, there is a big party in the Anson B. Nixon Park for all the racers, their families, volunteers and anyone else from our community. Food, drinks and entertainment are all provided by the generosity and support of our local businesses and sponsors, celebrating the strength of community and family in Kennett Square.

Through our grant application process, the Board of Directors has gifted over $1 million back to the community since its inception. In 2015, we contributed $37,850 back to local nonprofit organizations. Proceeds of the Kennett Run support local nonprofit organizations in the Kennett Square and surrounding community. In addition to the funds raised, our volunteers have assisted in the Anson B. Nixon’s park maintenance and re-development plan, community enrichment programs and reaching out to non-profits in need of funding. Our allvolunteer Board of Directors and Race Committee believe strongly in the mission for which charity is based.
Through the long-term financial contributions of our corporate sponsors, Kennett Run Charities, Inc. is able to continue our commitment to support local nonprofits in the Kennett Square community. We extend our appreciation and thanks to East Marlborough Township, Borough of Kennett Square, Kennett Township and Pennsylvania State Police, Kennett Fire Company, Longwood Fire Company and all EMS workers for their assistance and support in planning this annual event. When you’re running or walking on race day, please give them a Big Thank You as we could not provide the quality and safety of an event like the Kennett Run without them!
On behalf of the Board of Directors of Kennett Run Charities, Inc. and all the dedicated volunteers, we look forward to a fantastic day in celebrating the 27th Kennett Run, in order to serve our community.
A Moment of Inspiration Creates A Lifetime of Change! Do something to promote better health and REGISTER for the KENNETT RUN!
I will see you on race day!

J.J. Simon has already participated in 25 marathons, as well as a number of triathlons and Iron Man events, so it is safe to say that the miles he has logged in competition allow him to know a good race from a bad race.
The Kennett Run, he said, is a good race - a very good race.
Simon, who was named the new race director for the 27th annual Kennett Run last fall, said all it took for him to come to that determination was to stand with Nadiene Ringler-Friedrich, his predecessor, at the start of last year’s race.
“The word ‘Community’ is a good way to describe the Kennett Run,” Simon said of the annual event, which will take place on May 14. “I was looking around trying to get a feel for
the race, and I saw that there was a lot of community support and several local sponsorships. I saw that the race went through neighborhoods, not past warehouses, and that the board and volunteers all seemed to work together in harmony.”
Born in Australia, Simon was raised in Chile and France, and then moved to Canada, where he spent 31 years in the Canadian Air Force. He got to travel frequently for his job, and on one of his deployments to Cyprus, he met a few British ex-pats, who introduced him to off-trail running. Now retired from the military, he lives in Unionville with his wife Jacquelyn, also a competitive runner, and continues to compete.
When he saw the posting of the race director position at the Kennett Area YMCA last year, Simon felt

it would be a great way of melding his love of running with an opportunity to become a part of the Kennett Square community.
“I didn’t know who the board was, I have never participated in the Kennett Run before, but I was new to the area, and I wanted to be a part of it,” he said. “I want to make this the best race for this town, because it’s worth it. It is a privilege for me to do this.”
Simon’s aspirations for the Kennett Run are met by his new business partner, B. Christopher Daney, who was named as the new president of the Kennett Run, replacing Matt Genereux. Together, Simon and Daney have spent the last few months meeting with Kennett Run board members, volunteers, local schools and organizations -- all in an effort to do what the Kennett Run has already proven to do very well: Utilize the strengths of their neighbors.
“Over the years, you get to understand what needs to be done in order to get races put together, from
the standpoint of implementation, marketing and finding sponsors,” said Daney, who has helped organize racing events in Delaware, Pennsylvania. “You begin to understand the business of it by looking at the big picture and allowing all of the components to click together, to allow for a super event.”
Since its inception 27 years ago, Kennett Run Charities has raised and contributed over $1 million in donations to dozens of schools and organizations in the Kennett Square vicinity, and last year, it gave back just under $38,000. Keeping these contributions at a high level relies heavily on being able to recruit competitors in an increasingly crowded field of events.
“There is a lot of competition for these types of running events, and at times during the year, there are as many as four or five running events every weekend in Delaware, Pennsylvania and Maryland,” Daney said. “We’ve got to put together a really unique race day, in order to draw runners and competitors for the PoweRun.”

Inheriting an already well-oiled machine that is about to kick off its 27th year can, on the surface, give off the impression that the mission of the management is to leave well enough alone. While giving full credit to Genereux and Ringler-Friedrich for their many initiatives over the last several years, Daney and Simon are creating new ways of improving the template.
Simon has increased the Kennett Run presence on social media, by posting daily messages on Facebook, while creating links to businesses and organizations who are associated with the Kennett Run. He has also made several changes to the event’s website, including clarifications to race day maps and various races.
The Kennett Run recently set up information tables at the Kennett Area YMCA, where they registered more than 150 participants, and will patrol a registration tent at the Kennett Square Winterfest on Feb. 27.
“Chris and I have managed to reach out to new contacts who are eager to help out in ways that they first didn’t realize they could,” said
Simon. “There’s a fresh energy that Chris and I are bringing that’s required for every race, and in a few years when we step down, there will be a new team who will be able to take what Chris and I have done a little further.”
Daney has participated in the Kennett Run several times, and each time, he is amazed at the large crowds that gather yearly along the race route. His favorite image of the event, however, is always at the finish line at Anson B. Nixon Park, when he sees young children finish a FundRun.
“They’re all wearing their ‘Number 1’ on their shirt, and crossing the finish line, and for many it may be the first race of their life, or the only one they will run that year,” he said. “Being there when they cross that finish line, you get to see their faces, and that’s what the Kennett Run is really all about.”

Are you looking for something more from a race than just a run? Then why not register for the PoweRun and get some bench-presses in before the run?
The PoweRun has become a Kennett Run tradition and it separates us from other races. The benchpress competition is held before the run, on race morning, at the Kennett YMCA. The Kennett YMCA always goes all out to encourage everyone to participate and this competition would not exist if it was not for their valuable contribution. The Kennett YMCA has challenged the six area YMCAs to compete. This year, we have also challenged all the local CrossFit chapters to get their members to train and register. CrossFit Kennett, Chadds Ford, Wheelhouse, Reconstruct, Explode, Brandywine, Thunderhill and West Chester -- the game is on!
Also this year we have changed slightly the weight calculations that each person needs to lift to subtract time from their run. The weight that men and women are responsible to lift is as follows:
Age 16-20 - 60% of Body Weight
Age 21- 59 - 100% of Body Weight
Age 60 Plus - 70% of Body Weight
Age 16-20 - 50% of Body Weight
Age 21- 59 - 60% of Body Weight
Age 60 Plus - 55% of Body Weight
For each successfully completed repetition, in any/all gender and age groups, will result in a 30 second deduction for the 5K and/or a 60 second deduction for the 10K.
The lower the score the better. Some winners may even score into the nega-

tive numbers! Awards will be given to top three overall males and females in 5K & 10K runs. Furthermore, awards to the top three men and women in each race for the following age categories: 14-19, 20-29, 30-39, 40-49,
50-59, 60+. Men and women 14 and over are eligible to compete. Be strong, be fast and be a PoweRun finisher!

The daily morning runs of Karen DiMascola and Sarah Nurry may follow different pathways, but their collective sense of community have merged together as one.
Nearly every morning, DiMascola rises at 4:30, and runs along the country back roads of southern Chester County – at a time of the day when her husband and two children are still fast asleep, when the collision of sunrise and fog cascade over the rolling hills near the convergence of Wollaston and Mill roads.
About five hours later, after she gets her husband and four children off to work and school, Nurry tackles the up and down topography of her hometown, at the time when Kennett Square is filled with the scents of cafes and restaurants, and dotted with familiar faces.
DiMascola and Nurry are friends, joined together not only by their love of running but by a lacrosse team their sons both belong to. Last fall, while attending a

lacrosse event, Nurry asked DiMascola about a recent race DiMascola had just run.
“Karen said that the course was nice, but nowhere as nice as the places she runs in the area,” Nurry said. “Then she turned to me and said, ‘Wouldn’t it be great to bring a half marathon to Kennett Square?’”
Soon after, the 1st Annual KSQ Mushroom Cap 13.1: A Celebration of Chester County – was born.
Scheduled for Oct. 15 at 7 a.m., the 13.1 mile race will start and finish at Kennett High School, and weave its way through Kennett Borough, Kennett Township and East Marlborough Township. A post-race event will be held at the Genesis HealthCare parking garage beginning at 10:30 a.m., and will feature food and beverages.
The half marathon event is operating under the umbrella of Run2Shine, Inc., the non-profit organization that DiMascola and Nurry began last fall.
Although Kennett Square has been the home of the annual Kennett Run since 1995, the inclusion of the Mushroom Cap half marathon this fall is intended to be a collaboration, not a competition, DiMascola and Nurry said. Although the lengths of the respective competitions may vary, both races share a common thread: a sense of community.
Run2Shine, Inc. has selected Family Promise of Southern Chester County and The Garage Community & Youth Center as the beneficiaries of the race, as well as several other local businesses who will provide assistance to the race this fall.
“The Kennett Run people have been incredibly supportive,” DiMascola said. “It’s a great companion event to ours, because the five and ten K distances of the Kennett Run will serve as the perfect training point to run a half marathon in the fall.”
“We felt that although the Kennett Run has been incredibly successful, that there is a need for a half marathon for this community, one that may put Kennett Square on the map, in terms of half marathons,” Nurry said.
While DiMascola and Nurry work to put together the puzzle piece logistics of the race – securing partnerships with local businesses and building a volunteer base, for instance – they’ve already secured the services of race director David Berger, a head coach with the Hockessin-based Progressive Fitness Coaching, LLC.

Let’s have fun in Anson B. Nixon Park – the finish line for all our runners. There will be food, music, entertainment and adult suds for ALL. The party in the park has become possibly the best part of the Kennett Run. Runners and spectators alike will enjoy a fun time in the park with all their family, neighbors and friends -- it feels like the whole town is there. This year we will have Shady Groove blast out popular tunes and get everybody dancing. Two Stones Pub has gracefully donated some of their quality beer for free. There will be pizza from Fox’s pizza Den and Domino’s pizza. Giant Foods will

provide fruit and water. Other foods will come from Dunkin Donuts / Baskin Robbins, Country butcher and Applebee’s, as well as Philly pretzels, Herr’s Chips and Sweet Christine’s gluten-free goodies and many other snacks for everyone, also for free. Longwood Family Chiropractic will be on site providing free rubs to those sore muscles and joints. Awards will be given to the top three females and males for each age group for both 5K and 10K runs and PoweRuns. Balloons will be on hand for everyone who looks like they want one. Please join us in the park this year and enjoy the community at its best.

Terry Lynn, owner of Terry Lynn’s Critters for the last eight years, has been sponsoring the Kennett Run since 2010. Her business consists of no-pens boarding/ doggy daycare/outside visits, and her motto is “Come play or stay!” Terry is a person who certainly can overcome adversity and tragedy. Despite a terrible canoeing accident on the Brandywine River that resulted in the death of her husband and led to back injuries that threatened to end her active life, Terry rebounded by taking up running. She hasn’t looked back since, starting from her first run – ironically, the Kennett Run 5K – to the recent comple-

tion of her 27th State of the 50-State half marathon.
Clearly, Terry is not showing any signs of slowing down, as she’ll not only participate in this year’s Kennett Run, but will also have an information table at Anson B. Nixon Park.
Terry is the proud owner of a six-monthold beautiful St. Bernard and Great Pyr that she named “Lefty,” in honor of her late husband. The dog will be the star of the show at this year’s Kennett Run, pulling his cart of liverwurst muffins that GiggyBites gourmet pet bakery in marketplace is providing for Terry.

The Kennett Run Charities, Inc. Board of Directors is made up of volunteers from various Kennett Square service organizations, including the Rotary Club of Kennett Square, the Rotary Club of Longwood, the Lions Club, the Kennett Area YMCA and various Kennett area citizens who make the Kennett Run a successful, fun event for serious runners and families.
