MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS

I am delighted to share the launch of our 2025 annual Community Guide and Business Directory- the ultimate resource for your business and community needs!

Along with the County, the Chamber continues to grow. In 2024 we saw the Chamber’s rebranding, a new Chamber office/location, and the beginning of our new website. The Chamber is expanding its focus on educational training and government relations which will help us reach more potential members while allowing us to be a stronger advocate for our current partners. We want to be more than just a network of businesses; we want to be the county connection for all your business needs.

We start every year off with a signature January event highlighting the diversity of business in Cecil County- “Cecil Night in Annapolis”. This vital event ensures that Cecil County businesses stay well connected with our local and state legislative leaders, as well as let our members see and be seen by influential individuals from all over Maryland. No business is too small to participate in Cecil Night activities, so mark your calendars to come join us! We will also be bringing back our State of the County event. This is an opportunity for businesses to hear directly from our county leaders on the growth of the county in 2024 and the goals for 2025.

The rest of the year includes a series of exciting events for members and nonmembers alike, including monthly educational miniconferences, member networking events, grand openings, ribbon cuttings, signature events (such as Business by the Bonfire, Mocks and Socks, and our Spring Golf Outing), and Cecil County’s First Responders Appreciation Banquet. There are great opportunities to showcase your business, expand your network, and support our community. This year we will be celebrating Cecil’s 350th Anniversary with a special event planned for June 6th.

The Chamber and its Board are committed to being the “voice of business” as we continue to partner for the future.

We hope that you consider joining us in this mission. To all our current members, thank you for being a part of the Cecil County Chamber of Commerce family!

MESSAGE FROM THE CHAMBER

LOCATION AND TRANSPORTATION

Strategic Access to Key Markets

Situated midway between the metropolitan areas of Baltimore and Philadelphia, Cecil County’s strategic location offers businesses overnight access to markets in New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia, and Washington, DC. Cecil County’s well-developed transportation system offers easy access via land, rail, and water.

Cecil County Fair: Fun for everyone

The Cecil County Fair presents an opportunity to experience and enjoy Cecil County and all of its many facets over nine fun-filled summer days each year.

For fun-seekers, the fair features everything from fantastic food and music to a carnival midway and aerial performances to the work of skilled artisans and a demolition derby. There are cowboy circuses, pie-eating contests, glass blowers, tractor-pulls, hay bale tosses, and many agricultural competitions and 4-H events.

The festivities attract more than 75,000 people over the course of nine days, and there is something for each and every person to enjoy.

to showcase and celebrate the agricultural heritage of Cecil County, but it has also grown and evolved—just as the county has grown and evolved over the decades.

The Cecil County Fair originated 71 years ago when members of the Calvert, Cecilton and Colora granges met over lunch to discuss the idea of starting a county fair to shine a spotlight on the area’s agricultural activities. The founding members included Robert Carrion, Bill Groff, Walt Mason, and Ray Mueller, who was Cecil County’s Agricultural Extension Agent at the time.

Al Miller’s father, Grove Miller, was part of the group that planned the first fair.

“It’s a wonderful event,” said Al Miller, a Cecil County Councilman who is also a longtime Cecil County Fair Board member. “It’s a lot of fun. We draw the biggest crowds in Cecil County.”

The fair attracts visitors from near and far with its wide variety of entertainment, events and attractions. For many local families, the fair is a tradition.

Miller also pointed out that the event has a significant economic impact on the community. The fair remains true to its original mission

According to Al Miller, the fair’s organizers approached William DuPont, a businessman and banker and a member of the prominent Delaware Du Pont family, with a request.

“Mr. DuPont, would you allow us to have a fair on your property?”

William DuPont said yes— they could use his impressive property, which is today known as Fair Hill Natural Resources, with one condition. DuPont insisted that he would pay for the costs of putting on the event.

On July 31, 1954—the same year that Al Miller was born— the first fair was held. It took place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and admission was completely free. DuPont, local individuals, organizations, businesses as well as the county commissioners provided the financial support necessary to stage the fair. Among the first exhibitors were the Grange, the Homemakers’ Club and the Cecil County PTA. The midway consisted of just two booths – a dart and balloon game and baseball and bottle game that was run by Grove Miller, Jack Miller and Walt Mason. Everyone walked away with a prize.

Continued from previous page

The Cecil County Fair was a hit right from the start. The fair increased to two days in 1956 and then three days a year later. It expanded again in 1961 and then again in 1976. During this time, attendance soared past 20,000 for the first time. In 1973, a tractor pull was added, sponsored by the Cecil County Young Farmers. The popular Stoney Robert’s Demolition Derby was added in 1977. By the 1980s, attendance reached 50,000, and at this time, a great diversity of animal shows had been added as well as a full-scale carnival midway. By 1983, the Cecil County Fair took place over a full week. 1995 was the first year that the fair took place over nine days, which is still its current length. Since he was born in the same year that the planning for the first fair was taking place, Al Miller has witnessed the popularity of the fair grow firsthand. Miller has served on the Cecil County Fair Board since 1978, including 11 years serving as the president of the fair

board. He was elected to Cecil County Council in 2018, and was elected to a second term in 2022. He and the other fair organizers remain committed to seeing that the fair continues to evolve and grow. There is a 42-person board that works more than 10 months out of the year to make the event possible.

“They do it because they love it,” Miller said. There is also a 15-person junior fair board to make sure that young people are also involved in the Cecil County Fair, and that the beloved community event will continue to thrive in the future.

Susan Sprout Knight, who runs the advertising for the Cecil County Fair, grew up in 4-H, and today, she continues her involvement through volunteering and mentoring youth. She voices high praise for the organization and for the skills it enabled her to acquire and the values it instilled in her.

Continued on page 24

Courtesy photo There is fun for all ages at the Cecil County Fair.

The 4-H is very involved in the Cecil County Fair. The 4-H members can make farm show exhibits like poultry, goats, dairy animals, horse jumping, a western horse show, and a livestock sale on the last day of the fair. 4-H also has a welding event, a fashion review where the participants design, sew, and model their clothing creations, an ATV event, a small engine event, a farm tractor safety presentation, and a dog and pet show.

The reason 4-H’s offerings are so varied is because the organization caters to young people and its mission is to help them become productive in whatever project they seek to pursue. Most of the projects fall into the categories of agriculture, STEM, healthy living, and civic engagement. The participants work year-long on their chosen projects, and the Cecil County Fair is their opportunity to not only show off what they have accomplished, it is a chance for them to earn trophies and other awards.

She explained how the 4-H projects work. “When I was young and a 4-H member, my project was gardening,” she said. “The organization provided me with a whole bunch of tools and resources to help me successfully learn gardening skills. Eventually, I was skilled enough to compete in horticultural events, and 4-H enabled me to travel throughout the country to participate in them.”

Susan described a bit about what it takes to enter the events at Cecil County Fair.

“Someone’s project might be cow showing, for instance. That means they either have their own cow or they lease one or they care for another community member’s cow. Throughout the 4-H member’s project, they learn how to properly care for a cow, they learn to feed it and to keep it clean and healthy. Once they have developed a prize specimen cow, they get to show it off and all their hard work at the fair.”

4-H is much more than working with animals, and the Cecil County Fair gives every 4-H member a chance to showcase their projects, their leadership, and their communication skills. 4-H members say that the Cecil County Fair is one of the best weeks of the summer.

The Cecil County Fair is true to its roots and keeps farming and agriculture in the spotlight, while also bringing a wide array of food, music, and entertainment to the community. Each summer, happy memories are made here. It’s a great family event, too.

Miller, like everyone else who works so hard to make the event possible, looks forward to the event each year.

“I still get excited about the fair the night before it starts,” he explained. Continued from page 22

2025 is the 71st year for the Cecil County Fair. The fair will run from July 18 through July 26. For more information, including the schedule of events and attractions for this year, visit www.cecilcountyfair.org.

Elkton

Elkton is located on the colonial highway of America. Our country’s forefathers navigated its waterways and traveled its roads when heading north to Philadelphia, or south to Virginia. Once known as Head of Elk, named by Captain John Smith, it sits at the northern headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay. Elkton played a significant role in both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. Many of the town’s beautiful colonial structures remain today, surrounded by buildings that reflect an active business community. The once infamous “marriage capital” has developed into a thriving economic arena for service and retail industries, several large

The North East River played an important role in the early years of this town. Mills were built along its shores, farms prospered, and local fishermen found the area to be rich in stock. One of its churches, St. Mary Anne’s Episcopal Church, dates back to the early 1700s, and has one of the oldest graveyards in the state. Today the neighborly town enjoys a charming renovation and is a tourist destination for visitors who like regional foods, boating, history, and antiques and collectibles shopping. Port Deposit

Historic Port Deposit is nestled between a granite cliff and the banks of the Susquehanna River. The tiny village was a place where men made fortunes in granite quarrying and shipping sellable goods on arks and rafts from the “port of deposit” on the waterfront. Fishing was also a big industry with a plentiful supply of shad and rockfish. Port Deposit is a well-preserved, historic, mid-nineteenth century, industrial town, and the architecture is evidence of the artistry and craftsmanship of the period. The commercial waterfront has been replaced with a vibrant residential community, Marina Park, and a Visitor Center in the restored historic Jacob Tome Gas House that includes a Northern Map Turtle habitat and education center. Agriculture is at the core of Cecil County’s rural heritage and quality of life.

Farmers work 36% of the land in Cecil County every day and in every season! Like generations of farmers before them, the farmers of today must be businesspeople and advocates as well as stewards of the land.

Our farmers of today grow row crops, feed, and vegetables; run orchards, greenhouses, and vineyards; raise livestock including poultry, goats, sheep, horses, alpacas, dairy and meat cows; keep bees; and grow trees, shrubs, and flowers—all right here in Cecil County!

While in many ways, farming is an age-old practice, today’s farmers also use modern methods and technologies to improve crop yields, safeguard local waterways, improve soil quality, and market their products. Above all, today’s farmers are innovative—constantly and creatively expanding their offerings with value-added products like beeswax candles, soaps, ice cream, pies, cider, wool products, evergreen wreaths, and agritourism—to name a few.

Agritourism is when farmers invite the public to their farms to purchase products at farm stands, taste wine or beer, take a tour, ride horses, pick their own fruit, or enjoy seasonal activities like pumpkin patches, hayrides, and choosing a Christmas tree! Agritourism engages the

public with working farmland and helps farmers maintain viable businesses despite increasing pressure and decreasing profit margins. Farmers want to keep farming and feeding their friends and neighbors, but they need the support of the community.

Farmers sell products to local grocery stores, restaurants, schools, and directly to consumers through farmers’ markets, farm stands, storefronts, and CSA’s. A CSA—or Community Supported Agriculture—is when customers pay for a produce “subscription” before planting, which allows the farmer to purchase seeds and other supplies upfront and the customer to receive a share of the harvest weekly, biweekly, or monthly during the growing season.

A purchase from your local farmer supports Cecil County’s hard-working producers, economy, health, and resilience, and helps preserve its rural culture and pastoral ambience. Look for the Cecil Grown logo that certifies products are grown here. If you ate good food, breathed clean country air, or enjoyed the beauty of a lush, green landscape today, thank a farmer!

CELEBRATING 350 YEARS OF CECIL COUNTY COMMERCE

Colonial Roots

At the headwaters of the Chesapeake Bay, Cecil County stands as a testament to Maryland’s entrepreneurial spirit. For three and a half centuries, our community has reinvented itself while staying true to its commercial roots—from colonial merchants to digital-age innovators.

Our story begins in bustling colonial ports like Charlestown and Elkton, where ships heavy with tobacco and other goods set sail for distant shores. The Rising Sun Tavern, founded by Henry Reynolds around 1720, grew from a simple stone waypoint between Baltimore and Philadelphia into the heart of a thriving town. When the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal opened in 1829, it didn’t just

connect two great waterways—it transformed Chesapeake City into a maritime hub whose influence we still feel today.

Agricultural Foundations

Cecil County’s rich soil has long been the foundation of our prosperity. Our farmers didn’t just feed the region; their reputation for quality made them essential suppliers during the Revolutionary War. By the late 19th century, a booming canning industry reshaped our agricultural landscape. In Cecilton, the community’s resourcefulness shone through as they converted their first public school building into a cannery—one of many facilities that helped preserve and ship local produce across the nation.

Industrial Expansion

The Principio Furnace marked our entry into the industrial age, producing iron that would shape both local tools and colonial ambitions. As industry evolved, so did we. Elkton embraced diverse manufacturing, from paper mills to fertilizer plants. The railroad turned Perryville into a vital transportation hub, while Port Deposit’s distinctive granite became part of America’s architectural heritage, gracing buildings from the Library of Congress to the U.S. Naval Academy.

Modern Innovation

Today’s Cecil County balances preservation with progress. Chesapeake City’s historic waterfront draws visitors to its boutiques and restaurants, housed in carefully restored 19thcentury buildings. The Perry Point VA Medical Center continues to pioneer veteran care while providing hundreds of local jobs. Port Deposit’s architectural legacy, recognized on the National Register of Historic Places since 1978, reminds us that progress doesn’t mean forgetting our roots.

A Legacy of Resilience

Through wars, economic shifts, and social change, Cecil County’s business community has shown remarkable resilience. Local business organizations now focus on nurturing the next generation of entrepreneurs, helping both startups and established businesses adapt to changing markets. As we celebrate 350 years of commerce, we honor not just our past achievements but the innovative spirit that continues to define our community’s future.
