En esta edición incorporamos un interesante reportaje que analiza y disecciona el éxito de las series de televisión en este primer tramo del siglo XXI y se pregunta si son las heredederas del cine y si debemos enterrar al séptimo arte, al menos tal como lo habíamos entendido hasta ahora. Dedicamos un amplio reportaje a Barcelona y nos centramos en aquellas propuestas nuevas que ofrece la ciudad. Fijamos la vista en 9 cosas nuevas de Barcelona, porque las ciudades avanzan cuando se reinventan, cuando exploran nuevos caminos, como las personas, como las empresas. Dear Guest, It gives me great pleasure to present this latest edition of the ESTAR Magazine; a publication exclusively created by our team for more than 9,000 Eurostars rooms all over the world. In this edition, we have included an interesting report that examines and dissects the success of TV series in this early part of the 21st Century to ask whether they have taken over from cinema and the silver screen is dead, at least in the way it has exists until now. We have also dedicated an extensive report to the city of Barcelona that focuses on several new places and others that are experiencing a revival. The spotlight has been placed on nine places in Barcelona because cities only develop when they reinvent themselves, when they explore new paths; just like people or companies. Together with these nine places, we present the nine Eurostars hotels to be found in the city. For Eurostars Hotels, Barcelona is not only a city that is popular with the tourists who fill our establishments but is also the global headquarters for Grupo Hotusa, the company that manages Eurostars Hotels. It is therefore a city with which we have a strong emotional bond. The magazine also contains some other interesting ideas, such as a selection of the best spa and thermal treatment centres by Eurostars Hotels, city breaks in Naples and Budapest, a 24-hour journey through Catalan cuisine with the chef from the Eurostars Grand Marina and an interview with the writer Paula Hawkins, author of The Girl on the Train. Living with things that don’t exist Art can change the way we see the world. This is the basic premise that the exhibition entitled How to (...) things that don’t exist aims to show visitors. A collection of works by artists from all over the world that, from the 31st São Paulo Biennial, is making a special visit to Porto to change our universe with pieces that reveal what is, what could be and what cannot be seen. The collection is in a constant state of flux and, as the title suggests, openly proposes a relationship with the works of art. The Phillips Collection in Washington is considered one of the benchmark museums for modern art anywhere in the world. To celebrate its upcoming centenary, a roaming exhibition has been organised that will stop at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome until February 2016. Its founder, Duncan Phillips, wanted to create a museum where the most intimate works could be found alongside the most experimental. A collection in which Goya, Ingres or El Greco interact with Matisse, Kokoschka or Rothko, demonstrating that painting is a universal language that is meant to be shared and enjoyed by a universal audience.

The story of Elizabeth Lee Miller is one of a North American model from the first half of the 20th Century who switched to the other side of the camera, creating a collection of photographs in which surrealism and humour combine to build a highly personal catalogue that can be enjoyed at the Museum of Modern Art in Mexico City until February 2016. Experimental cinema As is the case for all other fine arts, what is avant-garde at the cinema today will be commonplace tomorrow. To appreciate the experiments taking place and to compare them with what we have today, the Reina Sofía Art Museum in Madrid is offering an anthology of North American experimental cinema commissioned by the researcher Bruce Posner. 37 films will be on show until December 2015 - many of them unknown and recently restored - containing the multiple journeys taken by avant-garde cinema over five decades, from 1920 to 1970. Contemplaciones: Homenaje Iberomericano a Jeanette Contemplations: Ibero-American Tribute to Jeanette Jeanette es una cantante hispano-británica que aportó al cancionero popular algunos de los temas más tristes, melancólicos y dulces de la música española. Canciones como ¿Por qué te vas?, Cállate niña, o Soy Rebelde, son reconocidos como grandes clásicos de nuestra música. Hoy, la dulce y aniñada Jeanette, viene a ser reivindicada por algunos de los grupos más innovadores del panorama pop iberoamericano, con un disco de versiones a cargo de músicos tan interesantes como La Bien Querida acompañada por Los Pilotos (la mitad de Los Planetas), Iluminados, Reina Republicana, Linda Mirada o los argentinos Lucrecia Tagliapetra y Violeta Castillo, así como los peruanos Chico Unicornio, por ejemplo. Una mirada diferente a un repertorio especial y en ocasiones inquietante. No se lo pierdan. Jeanette is a Hispano-British singer who has brought some of the saddest, most melancholic and sweetest songs from Spanish sound into popular music. Currents Tame Impala

Kevin Parker, el alma mater de Tame Impala, ha visto una luz. Juzgar si esa luz le lleva a un camino correcto o no, lo decidirán quienes escuchen Currents. El tercer disco de Tame Impala quiere desmarcarse conscientemente de su sonido anterior, guitarrero, setentero, rockero, para adentrarse en una nueva dimensión electrónica, en la que los bajos y los sintetizadores de todo estilo y condición toman el protagonismo de manera estudiada y, permítannos emitir un juicio, convincente. No es el disco que se esperaba, tampoco es un disco que nos haga renegar para siempre de esta banda australiana que ha decidido seguir una nueva vía. Canciones como la que abre el disco, o Cause I’m a man, sin embargo, y pese a no ser lo mismo, nos acompañarán ya para toda la vida. Sólo hay que seguir la luz.

Kevin Parker, alma mater of Tame Impala, has seen a light. Judgement about whether that light leads him along the right path or not will be passed by those who listen to Currents. The third album by Tame Impala makes a conscious effort to move away from their previous sound - 70s rock guitar - to explore a new electronic dimension for which bass guitars and all sorts of synthesisers take the lead in a carefully orchestrated manner, allowing listeners to pass sure judgement. It is not the album we all expected, neither is it an album that will make us forever turn our backs on this Australian band that has chosen to follow a new path. Although not the same, such tracks as the first on the album or Cause I’m a Man will accompany us through life forever. We just need to follow the light.

Una de esas películas que nos cuentan una pequeña historia que puede pasar a la vuelta de la esquina. El canadiense Xavier Dolan nos cuenta la historia de Diane, una mujer que ronda la cuarentena que tiene que hacerse cargo de su complicado hijo de quince años, Steve. Superada por los acontecimientos, descubrirá en otra mujer, Kyla, nueva en el vecindario, una ayuda inesperada. Mommy fue una de las grandes revelaciones de la temporada pasada. Una historia que nos dice que no solo con amor se arreglan los problemas, pero que sin amor todo se hace prácticamente imposible. One of those films that tells a small story about something that could happen to any of us. The Canadian director Xavier Dolan tells us the story of Diane, a woman of about 40 who must look after her complicated 15-year-old son, Steve. Overcome by the situation, she finds unexpected support from another woman, Kyla, when she moves into the neighbourhood. Mommy was one of the biggest hits last season. A story that shows us how problems can indeed be solved with love but that everything becomes almost impossible without it.

libros books El escritor norteamericano James Ellroy no es simplemente el mejor exponente de la actual novela policiaca. Es algo más. Es, como los mejores representantes del género, un azote de una sociedad con doble cara y mucho que esconder. En Perfidia aparecen personajes que ya conocemos de otras obras de Ellroy, como la archiconocida L.A. Confidential, en una trama que se desarrolla nuevamente en Los Ángeles, durante veinte días después de que Japón atacase Pearl Harbour en 1942. Veremos cómo afecta a una familia japonesa residente en California y cómo la paranoia racista y la maldad humana nos acecha a cada paso, en cada esquina. James Ellroy, nos ofrece con Perfidia una presunta precuela de algunas de sus novelas más aclamadas en una trama llena de nuevo de violencia, de tipos atormentados y de mafias ocultas, de negrura y también, por qué no decirlo, de amor por un género que domina y ensancha como nadie.

The North American writer James Ellroy is not simply the best example of modern police writing; he is something more. Just like all the major benchmarks in this genre, he is a wake-up call for a society with two faces and much to hide. Perfidia reintroduces characters we already know from other books by James Ellroy, such as the famous L.A. Confidential, during a part of the plot that returns to Los Angeles 20 days after Japan attacks Pearl Harbour in 1942. We see how those events affect a Japanese family living in California and how racist paranoia and human evil wait to pounce at any minute, on every corner. With Perfidia, James Ellroy provides an alleged prequel to some of his most critically-acclaimed novels with a plot that is again full of violence, troubled characters and hidden mafia, blackness and - why not say so - love for a genre that dominates and is growing strong.

No se equivocan, pese a la muerte de Stieg Larsson, autor de la saga Millenium, Lo que no te mata te hace más fuerte es el cuarto volumen de esta serie protagonizada por el periodista Mikael Blomkvist y la hacker Lisbeth Salander. En esta ocasión es David Lagercrantz, escritor y periodista sueco, quien vuelve a poner a esta pareja en una peripecia de espionajes e intrigas internacionales. De nuevo las habilidades inquisitivas de uno y las peculiaridades de la otra, servirán para dilucidar una serie de nuevos ataques informáticos que ponen de relieve que muchas veces los más grandes riesgos en la red no vienen de parte de los delincuentes, sino de los estados. David Lagercrantz se enfrenta al legado de Stieg Larsson y sale bien del empeño.

Juan Eslava Galán es un escritor que no deja indiferente. Sus ensayos divulgativos sobre la historia de España entretienen por divertidos y hacen pensar por polémicos. Peculiaridades de nuestra vida sexual que involucran desde reyes y autoras de novela erótica, a los habitantes de la llamada ‘fila de los mancos’ en los cines.

Do not be mistaken; despite the death of Stieg Larsson - author of the Millennium saga, That Which Does Not Kill is the fourth book in the series featuring the journalist Mikael Blomkvist and the hacker Lisbeth Salander. This time, the Swedish writer and journalist David Lagercrantz is responsible for putting this couple in a whirlwind of international espionage and intrigue. Again, the inquisitive skills of one and the peculiarities of the other will help shed light on a series of new IT attacks that reveal how the biggest Internet threats often do not come from criminals but rather States. The books by Juan Eslava Galán never leave anyone indifferent. His informative essays about Spanish history are entertaining and controversial. They introduce a grotesque vision of the past. This time, he focuses on the deadly sins and their influence on the course of history in Spain. Lust, sex and the way in which Spaniards approached and related to pleasure and desire are the subject of study for a book full of anecdotes that make the reader reflect on the importance of this hidden world for many generations before us. Peculiarities of our sex life that involve all sorts of people; from kings and erotic novel authors to the inhabitants of the so-called ‘back row’ at the cinema.

Vendió tres millones de ejemplares en menos de un mes (Reino Unido, Canadá y EEUU) y ha sido traducida a más de 40 idiomas. Nunca se había vendido tanto y tan rápido un libro, según The Guardian. Sedujo a Stephen King y es un fenómeno editorial del que ya está anunciada la película de Dreamworks con Haley Bennett, Emily Blunt y Rebecca Ferguson. Ha estado en la cabecera de las listas de libros más vendidos en prácticamente todo el mundo. Es el gran éxito de Paula Hawkins, periodista británica que solamente había publicado hasta ahora algunas novelas con seudónimo (Amy Silver). Nació en Zimbabue y en 1989 se trasladó a Londres. Fue admitida en la Universidad de Oxford y estudió ciencias políticas, filosofía y economía. Al término de sus estudios se dedicó al periodismo. he novel entitled The Girl on the Train was published in early 2015. It sold three million copies in less than one month (United Kingdom, Canada and United States) and has been translated into 40 languages. According to The Guardian, no book has ever sold so many copies in such a short time. It caught the attention of Stephen King and is already a publishing phenomenon from which a DreamWorks film starring Haley Bennett, Emily Blunt and Rebecca Ferguson has already been announced. It has topped the best-seller lists practically worldwide. The author of this literary hit is Paula Hawkins, a British journalist who had previously only published a few novels under a pseudonym (Amy Silver). She was born in Zimbabwe and moved to London in 1989. She was accepted into the University of Oxford and studied political science, philosophy and economics. Upon finishing her studies, she began a career in journalism and worked at The Times for many years. Do you ever think that the book would be so successful? Nobody expects to be so successful! But, yes, there were positive signs at the beginning; firstly from the publishers and then from critics and bloggers. That convinced me the book was destined for good things. The response from readers has been wonderful: one of the most gratifying experiences.

Which writers do you like and which ones have influenced your writing? In no specific order: Kate Atkinson, Pat Barker, Agatha Christie, Cormac McCarthy, Donna Tartt, Zoe Heller, Lionel Shriver, Sebastian Barry and Armistead Maupin. Kate Atkinson is probably my favourite writer: I think her series of police novels with detective Jackson Brodie is simply excellent. Her books are great fun and heartbreaking, with brilliant plots and disturbing characters. I read a lot of police novels and contemporary thrillers written by women: Tana French, Gillian Flynn, Colette McBeth, Cara Hoffman, Megan Abbott, Louise Welsh, Louise Doughty and Attica Locke, for example. As for non-fiction, I love the journalism work of the stupendous Ryszard Kapuscinski, who is sadly no longer with us. The books by Oliver Sachs are a great source of inspiration and I recently discovered Olivia Laing, who is fantastic. I always recommend budding writers to read On Writing by Stephen King, which is an incredibly practical writing handbook as well as a fascinating autobiography.

Acabo de terminar Hausfrau, de Jill Alexander Essbaum, que me ha parecido un retrato sumamente poderoso de la lucha de una mujer contra la depresión. También me encantó All Involved, de Ryan Gattis, que es un relato visceral, apasionante, de asesinato, amistad y traición que se desarrolla durante los disturbios de Los Ángeles. I have just finished Hausfrau, by Jill Alexander Essbaum, which I thought was an extremely powerful portrait of the battle between a woman and depression. I also loved All Involved, by Ryan Gattis, which is a visceral, passionate tale of murder, friendship and betrayal that takes place during the Los Angeles riots.

La novela atrapa a partir de la mirada que elaboran cada día, mañana y tarde, los viajeros de los trenes de cercanías de Londres –y de todo el mundo- al ir al trabajo o al volver a su casa. Una mirada que resulta más intensa y compleja en la protagonista del libro por su personalidad “poco fiable”. Laura Hawkins describe su novela como “Un thriller psicológico que analiza la delgada línea que separa la normalidad de la pérdida de control que causa la adicción”. un sueño que un objetivo. Soy una persona bastante práctica, y “novelista” no me parecía que fuese una profesión muy práctica. Sin embargo, cuando me ofrecieron la oportunidad de probar a escribir de verdad (con los libros de Amy Silver), la aproveché. ¿Cuál es la fuente de inspiración para sus novelas? Las fuentes son muchas: mis propias experiencias, historias que me cuentan amigos, las noticias… el mundo está lleno de historias que esperan a ser contadas. ¿Qué está escribiendo en este momento? Se trata de un thriller psicológico oscuro, bastante gótico, que gira en torno a la relación entre hermanas.

¿Cuál es la orientación psicológica fundamental en su “La chica del tren”? Todos somos voyeurs. La gente que tiene que desplazarse para llegar a su lugar de trabajo es igual en todo el mundo: nos sentamos en nuestros trenes cada mañana y cada tarde, leyendo el periódico o escuchando música, miramos distraídamente por la ventanilla las mismas calles, las mismas casas, y de vez en cuando nos asomamos a la vida de un desconocido. Y estiramos el cuello para intentar ver mejor. Hay algo irresistible en esas miradas furtivas a la vida de los demás, de una brevedad frustrante y sin embargo tan reveladoras. No conocemos a las personas que viven en el último piso del edificio que hay junto a nuestra penúltima parada, no las hemos visto nunca, no sabemos qué aspecto tienen, pero sí sabemos que el ídolo de su hijo es Ronaldo, que la hija adolescente prefiere escuchar a Arctic Monkeys, que sienten debilidad por el mobiliario escandinavo moderno y el arte expresionista. Sabemos quiénes son esas personas. Nos caen bien esas personas. Estamos bastante seguros de que nosotros también les caeríamos bien. Podríamos ser amigos. than a goal. I’m quite a practical person and “novelist” didn’t seem like a very practical profession to me. However, when I was offered the opportunity to try writing for real (with the books by Amy Silver), I jumped at the chance. What is the source of inspiration for your novels? There are many: my own experiences, stories that my friends tell me, the news... the world is full of stories waiting to be told. What are you writing at the moment? It is a dark psychological thriller, quite Gothic, about the relationship between sisters. What is the basic psychology in The Girl on the Train? We are all voyeurs. People who need to travel to work are the same the world over: we sit on our trains every morning and afternoon, reading the paper or listening to music, we gaze out of the window at the same streets, the same houses, and sometimes we get a glimpse into the lives of strangers. Then we crane our neck to get a better look. There is something irresistible about those furtive glances into the lives of others, frustratingly brief yet so revealing. We don’t know the people who live on the top floor of the building right next to our penultimate stop, we’ve never seen them, we don’t know what they look like but we do know that Ronaldo is their son’s idol, that the Arctic Monkeys are the teenage daughter’s favourite band, that they have a weakness for modern Scandinavian furniture and expressionist art. We know who these people are. We like these people. We’re sure that these people would probably like us. We could be friends. But it’s a lonely look... Loneliness and isolation can form part of urban life just as much as daily travel, which is no doubt the case for Rachel, the main character in The Girl on the Train. Her fall from grace has been sudden, she has slipped surprisingly quickly from happiness to desperation. In her desperation to fill the void left behind by a past life, she feels she is forging a relationship with a couple she sees every day from the train. Those strangers now feel so familiar to her that she feels she knows them, understands them; she builds a whole story around them, she befriends them without their knowing. The actual truth is that she knows nothing about their real life. So little in fact that she has no idea what she is getting into when, after seeing something out of the ordinary, something shocking, she takes the fateful decision to cross a line, to go from voyeur to active participant in their story.

Un producto cultural que ha conseguido situarse en la primera línea de alabanzas por parte de los críticos y que nos hace preguntarnos si el cine ha muerto o si las series son el nuevo cine. Quizás lo mejor sea sentarse y disfrutar de ellas. Television or cable series have become a huge phenomenon. They are a cultural commodity that has garnered critical acclaim of the highest order and that makes us wonder whether the cinema is dead... or if TV series are the new cinema. Perhaps we should just sit down and enjoy them.

Cuándo empezó todo? Los más viejos podrán decir que ‘eso de las series’ comenzó con La Casa de la Pradera o con Bonanza. Y puede que tengan razón. Las series, ese fenómeno televisivo consistente en contar episódicamente una historia que, de manera a veces lenta y otras presurosa según lo ordene la audiencia y los anunciantes, llega a un final que si el producto es bueno siempre deja con ganas de más. Series televisivas han existido toda la vida, sin embargo, el fenómeno actual presenta características especiales. Así, diferenciamos también estos nuevos productos respecto de los culebrones tradicionales, como Falcon Crest o Dallas, torrentes episódicos en los que perderse cincuenta episodios no era óbice para seguir el hilo de la narración como si tal cosa. Las series de hoy muchas veces conciben cada episodio como si de un pequeño film se tratase. Así las cosas, analistas, estudiosos y público en general, parecen ponerse de acuerdo en que, las series producidas en los últimos años ya no son como las de antes. Como bien ha afirma el crítico de cine Quim Casas, un serio precedente a esas nuevas series se encuentra en Twin Peaks, la locura dirigida por David Lynch a principios de los 90 y que tuvo en vivo a medio mundo en torno a la misteriosa muerte de Laura Palmer. Twin Peaks, según Casas ‘fue un fenómeno viral que revolucionó el panorama de las series. Consiguió mezclar géneros como el thriller, la comedia disparatada, el melodrama, la fantasía o la ciencia ficción, creando con ello una nueva tipología. Gracias a ella se pudo comprobar que la gente necesitaba ver cosas distintas’.

An analysis of TV series could lead us, for example, to investigate the When before the What. With this in mind, analysts, academics and the general public seem to agree that the TV series produced in recent years are different from what came before. The film critic Quim Casas believes that a serious forerunner to these new series can be found in Twin Peaks, a crazy story directed by David Lynch in the early 1990s that had half the world obsessed with the mysterious death of Laura Palmer. According to Quim Casas, Twin Peaks “was a viral phenomenon that revolutionised the world of television series. It managed to mix such genres as the thriller, ridiculous comedy, melodrama, fantasy and science fiction to create a whole new genre unto itself. That series showed us that people needed different things to watch”.

WHEREVER YOU ARE One of the features that characterise the success of new TV series is the freedom with which people can enjoy them, however and wherever they want. Many of these series become famous by being broadcast on pay-TV channels, cable TV. It is not until some time has passed and their fame converts them into “mainstream” products that they are broadcast on channels that are open to the general public. Their broadcast via socalled Internet television, discussions on social media networks, the sale of successive seasons on DVD and direct consumption via all sorts of mobile devices has led to new ways in which to watch and experience TV series that have ‘liberated’ them from their former constraints. The importance of series is now as highly recognised as that of films and they have even become an extremely important tourist attraction. For example, the town of Albuquerque in the US State of New Mexico is the setting for the critically acclaimed series by AMC, Breaking Bad. Its streets are the stage on which Heisenberg carries out his plan and those same streets are now the setting for a tour that receives thousands of visitors wishing to re-enact their favourite scenes in the place where they were filmed. The same happened when the celebrated series Game of Thrones set major scenes in such European cities as Seville - the chosen location for filming many of the scenes in the latest season. Split, in Croatia, is the real place where King’s Landing and Meeren are set, while Ireland and Iceland are the places used to create the Kingdom of the North in this saga of fire and ice.

A new book has been gracing the bedside tables in all Eurostars guestrooms throughout Spain and Latin America since September 2015. Año Nuevo en Sudán [New Year in Sudan] was written by the Spanish journalist Luis Pancorbo and has won the 11th Eurostars Travel Narrative Award. Accompanied by 18,000 euros, this literary award organised by Grupo Hotusa, the University of Barcelona and RBA has become a benchmark in Spain and the largest award anywhere in the world for the travel literature genre. A total of 191 entries were submitted this year, the highest number ever. The panel of judges was made up by the writers Carme Riera, Alfredo Conde, Adolfo Sotelo, Manel Martos and Ana Sanjurjo. Año Nuevo en Sudán is an interesting travel journal that combines the classic feel of colonial travellers with the perspective of a contemporary man. El encuentro entre escritor y asistentes fue especialmente entusiasta, y se llevó a cabo en el marco del proyecto Eurostars Wine&Books, que organiza eventos de gastronomía y literatura en distintos establecimientos de la cadena. The well-known Spanish writer, Javier Sierra, who specialises in historic literature based on mysteries and enigmas from the past, gathered a significant number of followers at the Eurostars Madrid Tower in October. The atmosphere at the meeting between the writer and his readers was especially enthusiastic and took place within the framework of the Eurostars Wine&Books project, which organises gastronomy and literature events at various hotels in the chain. Such other writers as Gómez Jurado and Begoña Oro have previously taken part in Wine&Books.

Based in Salamanca, the artist José Portilla presents an exhibition at the Eurostars Las Claras from September to November 2015 that awakens the most intense of feelings in its visitors. The constant search that Portilla imbues into his art is responsible for his experimentation with emotions, tones, abstractions and textures. Somewhere between instinct and professionalism, the Italian artist not only paints a broad spectrum of global fauna but reflects its mood and energy. Her brushstrokes become hair and fur, deep eyes and discrete looks from animals that demand to be respected.

After visiting the Eurostars Gran Valencia and the Eurostars Las Adelfas in Córdoba, the exhibition entitled Dualidad by Katy Pastor is now visiting the Eurostars Plaza Acueducto 4* in Segovia for the last three months of 2015. The exhibition explores the decontextualisation of objects in space via a series of 20 images. Katy Pastor captivates her audience with hidden corners, unconventional angles and everyday scenes.

Miguel Alonso is a photographer from Madrid living in Prague. His dreamlike vision of the city includes images of such key monuments as the bridges over the river Moldova, the cathedral and the Malá Strana castle. An intense blue filter has been used for many of these images, which conveys the essence of a winter landscape. In contrast, others reflect the beauty of a black and white city in the sky and water. The photographs by Miguel Alonso can be seen at the Eurostars Thalia 5* in Prague from December to February.

En esta temporada de otoño-invierno de 2015/16 los hoteles portugueses de Eurostars albergarán tres exposiciones destacadas. La primera tiene lugar en Lisboa: el Eurostars das Letras 5* da cabida hasta noviembre de 2015 a la serie Espejismos, del fotógrafo coruñés José Luis Pérez, que juega con los reflejos y las rotaciones de las imágenes. Cuadrículas del pavimento, ondulaciones marinas y puntos luminosos crean un ambiente lírico en el establecimiento, captando el alma de la naturaleza en todas sus vertientes. Paralelalmente, en el hotel Eurostars das Artes 4* de Oporto, las obras del artista Ángel Prieto darán la bienvenida a los huéspedes del establecimiento. Su pintura miniaturista, heredada de los grandes artistas flamencos, relata grandes batallas y escenas costumbristas. Aunque concebido como un arte que ha de ser visto en la intimidad, las miniaturas de este artista invitan a una observación detallada. El tercer ángulo portugués del proyecto Eurostars Exposiciones es el Eurostars Rio Douro Hotel & Spa 4*, situado en un recodo del Duero a su paso por Castelo de Paiva. Allí Edite Melo (Torres Vedras, Lisboa) instala su nueva exposición de octubre a diciembre, tras llenar el Eurostars Das Letras de Momentos inolvidables. Su abstracción lírica, inspiradora del libro de poemas “A alma da cor”, recuerda al “action painting” de las vanguardias más experimentales, aunque su obra es producto de una detallada planificación.

This autumn-winter 2015/16 season, the Eurostars hotels in Portugal will welcome three outstanding exhibitions. For a long time, Turó de la Rovira was a corner of Barcelona that even the city itself turned its back on. When work began a few years ago to remodel the old Mercat del Born, remains were uncovered of an ancient city that revealed what Barcelona was like 300 years ago. Si hay un lugar de Barcelona que ha recuperado su antiguo esplendor es el Paralelo. En torno a esta avenida que dividía la Ciutat Vella del Poble Sec, se edificaron en su momento las salas de fiestas y teatros más conocidos de la ciudad. Hoy en día, tras años en los que el Paralelo y algunos de sus teatros han pasado momentos difíciles, renace como el lugar ideal para disfrutar de la noche barcelonesa conjugando la cultura y la vida en la calle. De tradición fabril, podemos disfrutar el legado de un pasado industrial visitando la Fabra i Coats o el parque de La Pegaso, pero también perdiéndonos por sus calles y descubriendo bodegas, un Mercado y una calle comercial como el carrer Gran de Sant Andreu. Una Barcelona diferente, pero de carne y hueso, que será dentro de muy poco, otro de esos lugares a los que no podremos renunciar.

Beyond the city centre and the Eixample district, others parts of the city await discovery; authentic places where we will find some of the most genuine aspects of Barcelona. Acostumbrados a caminar con la cabeza mirando al suelo, puede que estemos perdiendo de vista una parte importante de la ciudad. In recent years, Barcelona has launched a series of initiatives aimed at revealing the city while looking up. It is a way to appreciate some stunning landscapes, local customs and even sunsets that will take your breath away. The terraces of various buildings, mainly hotels, have become unique places from where to appreciate the beauty and views of Barcelona. Eurostars has nine hotels and a total of 787 rooms in Barcelona, as well as two hotels in the business suburbs, for a total of 11 establishments, 45 stars, 39 functions rooms, 1,025 rooms and over 5,000 m2 of hall space for events. The love story between Barcelona and Eurostars goes even deeper. The global head offices of Grupo Hotusa, the business group that manages Eurostars Hotels, are located in Barcelona. Back in the 1970s, a group of three small hotel companies joined forces to set up a small reservations centre. Hotusa Hotels was born. Now in the 21st Century, Hotusa has made the leap into the field of direct hotel management. In 2001, Hotusa assumed management of an establishment destined to make history: the Hotel Grand Marina, at the Barcelona WTC, at the heart of the city’s port. Since the Eurostars Hotels brand was launched in 2005, the Grand Marina has been one of the chain’s flagship establishments. Mel i mató. Se trata de una típica combinación catalana con queso fresco y miel. Es originario de la Cordillera Litoral, y a menudo se come también como postre. Cap i pota. Este plato típico del desayuno de cuchara hoy suele elaborarse con cabeza y tripa de ternera, pero la receta original se hacía con carne de la cabeza y la pata: de ahí su nombre, cap i pota. Su origen se remonta a los agricultores y ganaderos de la Cataluña interior, que lo degustaban por su aportación en carbohidratos. Se acompaña con garbanzos, chorizo curado, jamón, pimientos, cebolla y ajo. Flan de queso. En Cataluña el flan de queso es originario del Valle de Boí; al parecer se empezó a producir y se comercializó al resto de Cataluña para dar salida a un exceso de queso, y rápidamente el invento convenció a los paladares catalanes.

Soft cheese with honey. This is a typical Catalan combination of fresh cheese and honey. It comes from the Cordillera Litoral mountains and is also often eaten as a dessert. Head and leg of pork. This typical breakfast stew is usually made nowadays from beef head and tripe, but the original recipe used meat from the head and legs; hence the name. Its origin dates back to the crop and livestock farmers of inland Catalonia, who used to eat it because of the high carbohydrate content. It is accompanied by chick peas, cured chorizo, ham, peppers, onion and garlic. Cheese flan. Flan de queso in Catalonia originated in the Valle de Boí. It seems that people began to produce and sell it to the rest of Catalonia due to a surplus of cheese. The invention soon conquered the taste buds of everyone in the region.

Almuerzo LUNCH Arroz parellada. Plato típicamente marinero. Se trata de un arroz con sepia, langostinos, calamares, pollo, lomo de cerdo y verduras como guisantes. Parece que su origen se remonta al Restaurante El Suizo, en las Ramblas de Barcelona, donde solía acudir el potentado Julio Parellada, propietario de un palacio en la calle Canuda, quien pedía siempre que todos los ingredientes vinieran pelados. En algunos lugares también le llaman ‘arroz de señorito’. Pollo de corral con gamba roja de Palamós. Es una variedad de la familia de recetas llamada ‘mar i muntanya’, muy arraigada en la tradición gastronómica catalana y que busca maridar productos de mar con productos de tierra. En origen eran platos de familias con pocos recursos; hoy en día los mar i muntanya son dignos de altas celebraciones. Crema catalana. Receta clásica de la gastronomía catalana, donde la crema se cubre con una capa de azúcar caramelizado que debe estar bien crujiente. Es tan parecida a la cremme broulé que es difícil distinguir una de la otra y saber cuál de ellas fue primero. En todo caso, igualmente deliciosas.

Restaurante Aire de Mar El Aire de Mar, el restaurante del Eurostars Grand Marina, sirve una variada oferta gastronómica que combina la cocina mediterránea y la cocina de fusión, en un entorno de lujo y tranquilidad. La variada capacidad de salones del hotel permite celebrar con éxito tanto cenas íntimas como grandes eventos para más de 400 comensales. The Aire de Mar Restaurant at the Eurostars Grand Marina serves a varied selection of culinary delights that combine Mediterranean cuisine with fusion cooking in a luxurious and peaceful setting. The varied sizes of the function rooms at the hotel mean that anything from intimate dinners to large-scale events for over 400 diners can be celebrated successfully.

Merienda Tea time Rich man’s paella. A typical seafood dish. It is made from sepia rice, prawns, squid, chicken, pork loin and vegetables, such as peas. It seems to have originated at the Restaurante El Suizo, on Las Ramblas in Barcelona. This restaurant was often frequented by the tycoon Julio Parellada (owner of a palace on Calle Canuda), who used to always ask for all the ingredients to be peeled. It is also known as arroz de señorito in some places. Free-range chicken with red Palamós king prawns. This is a variety of the family of recipes called mar i muntanya, with very close ties to Catalan gastronomy tradition and seeks to pair seafood with mountain produce. Originally for poorer families, mar i muntanya dishes are now commonplace at the most exquisite celebrations. Catalan cream. A classic recipe from Catalan gastronomy in which cream is covered with a layer of caramelised sugar that should be very crispy. It is so similar to the creme broulé that it is difficult to distinguish one from the other and know which came first. In any case, they are both equally delicious.

Chocolate a la piedra con melindros. Se trata de un chocolate a la taza, muy natural, granulado y sobre todo sin leche, así llamado porque antiguamente se molía sobre una piedra. El más típico es el de Agramunt (en el llano de Urgell, provincia de Lleida), donde también elaboran los mejores turrones de Cataluña. Hay que acompañarlo con melindros (bizcocho blando alargado) y degustarlo bien untado con el chocolate. Si uno se mancha un poco, no es problema: señal de que lo está disfrutando de lo lindo. Stone-ground hot chocolate with sponge fingers. This is a very natural, granulated and, above all, milk-free hot chocolate drink. The name comes from the fact that, in the past, it used to be ground on a stone. The one from Agramunt (on the Urgell plains in the province of Lleida) is the most typical, which is where they also make the best turrón in Catalonia. It should be accompanied by melindros (sponge fingers) for spreading with the chocolate. If you drop some on yourself, don’t worry: it’s a sign of how much you’re enjoying it!

Cena dinner Coca de setas y berenjena. También es característico de las tierras de Lleida. El concepto de coca es sinónimo de fiesta, y se presta excelentemente para poner sobre ella lo mejor de los productos de temporada de la tierra. Es una propuesta muy completa: la berenjena es común a todo el Mediterráneo; las setas son típicamente ibéricas; y la coca es de raíz francesa. Romescada de rape. El romesco es una salsa originaria de Grecia que, con pequeñas variantes, se elabora y degusta de Algeciras a Estambul, como diría Serrat. En Cataluña reclaman su invención distintas poblaciones costeras como Sitges, Vilanova i la Geltrú y El Vendrell, aunque ninguna ha logrado demostrar su derecho de origen sobre el resto. Otros alimentos que suelen servirse con romesco son la parrillada de verduras, los mejillones y, con un toque de salsa ligeramente diferente, los famosos calçots. Pa de pessic con sopa de chocolate blanco y helado. Seguramente somos uno de los pocos pueblos en que se come la base de las tartas, así sin nada. Nunca ha quedado del todo claro si lo hacemos así porque éramos pobres o impacientes. Para hacerlo más amigable, el pa de pessic suelo ponerlo en una sopa de chocolate blanco con naranja y acompañado de su helado. Coca pastry with mushrooms and aubergines. This is another typical dish from Lleida. Coca is synonymous with festivals and is ideal for adding the best local and seasonal produce. It has a bit of everything: aubergines are common throughout the Mediterranean; mushrooms are typically Iberian; and coca has French roots. Anglerfish in romesco sauce. Serrat once said that romesco is a sauce of Greek origin that, with minor variations, is made and enjoyed from Algeciras to Istanbul. In Catalonia, various coastal towns - such as Sitges, Vilanova i la Geltrú and El Vendrell all claim to have invented it, although none of them are able to demonstrate their superiority over the others. Other dishes usually served with romesco include grilled vegetables, mussels and, with a touch of a slightly different sauce, the famous calçots. Sponge cake with white chocolate sauce and ice-cream. Catalonia is surely one of the few places where people eat cake bases with nothing else. It has never been made clear whether this is done because the people were poor or simply impatient. To make them more appetising, I usually add the pa de pessic to a white chocolate and orange soup accompanied by ice cream.

Allí “creci como profesional y entendí la cocina como un arte al que amar lo que estas haciendo”. Gassó ha aprendido de la mano de los mejores chefs de Cataluña y desde hace años se ha especializado en el sector hotelero, habiendo desarrollado su carrera en emblemáticos hoteles de Sitges (Barcelona) y El Vendrell (Tarragona), así como en el hotel Alfonso XIII de Sevilla. En 2015 ha dado el salto para dirigir los fogones del restaurante del Grand Marina. His cooking career began at the l’Avi Pau Restaurant (Cunit, Tarragona), which was a major benchmark for traditional Catalan cuisine at the time. While there, “I grew professionally and learned to understand cooking as an art form in which you should love what you’re doing”. Carles Gassó has learned from the best chefs in Catalonia and has specialised in the hotel sector for years, having developed his career at iconic hotels in Sitges (Barcelona) and El Vendrell (Tarragona), as well as the Alfonso XIII Hotel in Seville. ntraron en la habitación al anochecer, guardando las distancias. Los encuentros furtivos saben mejor en un hotel elegante, decían en la red. Y la red lo sabe todo. Como habían acordado, él se sentó en la parte más cercana a la ventana. Le incomodó un poco que aquella habitación doble tuviera una sola cama, pero era la más grande que nunca había visto. Ella, con la mirada fija en el suelo, intentaba controlar sus emociones. Había soñado mucho tiempo con aquel momento y ahora no tenía palabras. Siguiendo el plan previsto, visitaron el mueble bar de manera ordenada. Se observaban furtivamente, con curiosidad ante la perspectiva de lo desconocido. Ambos escogieron un licor fuerte. No parecían estar muy acostumbrados. Bebían sin dejar de mirar sus pantallas. Ella actualizó su estado: “Por fin sola con mi amor”. Al otro lado de la cama, un teléfono sonó y él puso un “Me gusta”. Ella esperaba una respuesta más efusiva, pero no la hubo. Fue una pequeña decepción, pero el calor del vodka suavizó aquel mal sentimiento.

Entró en el baño con su pequeña maleta y se puso el pijama nuevo. Se sentía incómoda con aquella camiseta de tirantes, pero había leído que era algo sexy. Al volver a la cama, vio que él seguía tecleando sin importarle su presencia. Ella, con cierto aire de resignación, le imitó, iniciando una búsqueda en Google: “Cómo comportarse en la primera cita”. Unos minutos después, él se levantó. Antes de cerrar la puerta, supo qué había estado haciendo. Había actualizado su blog con una comparativa entre los servicios del hotel y el estándar medio de los alojamientos de su categoría. Al principio ella se enfadó un poco, pero enseguida recordó que las sábanas de aquella cama encajaban perfectamente en su blog de textiles urbanos y también se puso a escribir. Mientras estuvo ausente, llegaron tres tuits de su amor. Comentarios sin importancia sobre televisión y deporte. Ni rastro de ella ni del momento que estaban compartiendo. Aquello, que había sido un sueño, estaba empezando a ser una experiencia desconcertante. Al salir, pasó por su lado y no la miró, ni siquiera de reojo. Empezó a pensar que aquella velada difícilmente mejoraría su relación.

Pasados diez minutos seguían mirando al techo, inmóviles. Habían dejado todos sus dispositivos a un lado, intentando interactuar de manera natural, pero los echaban profundamente de menos. El silencio era tal que llegaba el murmullo de la calle. Por lo menos, así no se sentían tan vacíos. Al final, él no lo pudo evitar y envió un mensaje. Al sonar, ella supo que le había escrito, pero se resistía a mirarlo. No quería convertir aquel día en algo tan triste. Sonó y volvió a sonar. Hubiera sido ridículo no mirar su pantalla. Había un “Te quiero”. Y otro, y otro... A pesar de saberse atrapada en un callejón sin salida, le respondió con un beso virtual. Y él, y ella y él… Y toda la noche se convirtió en una espiral centrífuga de promesas etéreas. Ya ni siquiera el sonido del teléfono del otro les extrañaba, era parte del juego. Y él, y ella, y él… Estaban allí unidos por su soledad, sin querer abandonarla, porque eran mucho más felices así. Acercarse al otro físicamente sólo podía hacer que las cosas se complicaran y ellos lo sabían. Y ella, y ella, y ella, y ella… Y él ya no respondía. Armándose de valor, se giró hacia su lado y pudo verle profundamente dormido. Entonces

se dio cuenta de que ya eran las cuatro de la mañana y ni siquiera se habían acercado. De todas formas, no tenía ninguna duda: estaban tan enamorados… Le había dicho cosas muy hermosas aquella noche, tantas que hasta había olvidado que estirando un poco su brazo habría podido tocarlo. El amor ya no es el amor de nuestros padres, pensó. Todo es mucho más rico y complejo; como él, como yo. Sacó su teléfono e hizo un selfie: su primera foto juntos. Nunca lo había visto dormido. Parecía todavía más puro así. Quiso abrazarle, pero temió que pudiera despertarse y se apartó suavemente. Tras vestirse, salió silenciosamente de la habitación. Un barrendero empezaba su jornada laboral y, al pasar, la miró a los ojos. Ella se sintió invadida por el desconocido y aceleró el paso. Una vez en casa se sintió por fin completamente segura. A las siete de la mañana le despertó el teléfono. Lo vio en la pantalla , todavía en la cama del hotel. Era una llamada de video. ¿Tenía esa aplicación y no había querido utilizarla anoche? ¡Habrían podido verse las caras mientras chateaban! Se quedó mirando al vacío y comenzó a pensar.

hey walked into the bedroom at dusk, keeping a distance between them. Furtive encounters taste better at an elegant hotel, the Internet said. And the Internet knows everything. As they had agreed, he sat near the window. He felt slightly uncomfortable because the double room only had one bed, but it was the largest bed he had ever seen. Meanwhile, with her gaze fixed on the floor, she was trying to control her emotions. She had dreamed about this moment for a long time but now her words escaped her. Following their plan, they visited the minibar one after the other. They stole fleeting glances at one another, curious at the prospect of the unknown. They both chose a strong liqueur. They didn’t seem very used to this. They drank without taking their eyes of their screens. She updated her status: “Alone at last with my love”. On the other side of the bed, a mobile beeped and he added a “Like”. She was expecting more of a response, but that was all. She was a bit disappointed but the warmth of the vodka helped her over that. She entered the bathroom with her travel bag and put on her new pyjamas. She felt uncomfortable wearing the strap top but she

had read somewhere that it was sexy. Upon returning to the bed, she saw that he was still typing away as if she wasn’t there. With a hint of resignation, she copied him by starting a Google search: “How to act on a first date”. A few minutes later, he got up. Before he closed the door, she knew what he had been doing. He had updated his blog with a comparison between the services at this hotel and the average standard for the accommodation establishments of its category. She was a bit angry at first, but soon realised that the sheets on that bed were a perfect fit for his urban textiles blog and so she also started to write. While he was absent, she received three tweets from her love. Meaningless comments about television and sport. Nothing about her nor the moment they were sharing. This idea, which had been a dream, was starting to become a rather disconcerting experience. When he came back out, he walked passed her without looking, not even a glance. She began to lose hope that this evening together would improve their relationship. Ten minutes later and they were still staring motionless at the ceiling. They had left all their devices to one side, trying to interact naturally, but they both sorely missed them. The silence was so strong that they could hear the

babble coming from the street. At least that helped fill the void they felt inside themselves. Eventually, he was unable to control himself any longer and he sent a message. The alert informed her that he had written to her but she resisted the urge to look. She didn’t want to transform that day into something so sad. Another alert, and another. It would have been ridiculous not to look at her screen. There was an “I love you”. And another, and another... Despite feeling trapped in a dead end, she replied with a virtual kiss. And him, and her, and him... And the whole night spiralled into a whirlpool of ethereal promises. The sounds coming from the other’s phone ceased to bother them, it was part of the game. And him, and her, and him... There they were, united by solitude, not wanting to leave, because they were far happier like that. Getting closer to one another physically could only complicate matters, and they knew it. And her, and her, and her, and her... He no longer replied. Building up the courage, she turned to look at him and saw he was fast asleep. She then realised it was four in the morning and they

hadn’t even moved closer to one another. Nonetheless, she had no doubt: they were deeply in love... He had told her such lovely things that night; so many, in fact, that she had forgotten she had only needed to stretch out her arm slightly to touch him. Love today is nothing like it was for our parents, she thought to herself. Everything is far richer and more complicated; like him, like me. She grabbed her phone and took a selfie: their first photo together. She had never seen him asleep before. He looked even purer like that. She wanted to embrace him but was afraid he might wake up, so she moved away gently. After getting dressed, she quietly left the room. A road sweeper was starting his shift. As she walked past, he looked into her eyes. She felt violated by the stranger and began to walk faster. Only when she got home did she finally feel completely safe again. Her phone woke her at seven in the morning. She saw him on the screen, still in bed at the hotel. It was a video call. He had that app and hadn’t wanted to use it last night? They could have seen each other’s face while they chatted! She stared into space and started to think.

El Gran Hotel Budapest nos lleva a un tiempo que se fue, aquel tiempo que magistralmente retratara Stefan Zweig en sus novelas, un tiempo en el que lo viejo pervivía y nacía una época asombrosa y terrible. El Gran Hotel Budapest es obra del director norteamericano Wes Anderson, con trabajos como The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou o Viaje a Darjeeling y protagonizada por Ralph Fiennes, acompañado por un formidable elenco como Jude Law, Adrien Brody, Edward Norton o Tilda Swinton entre otros, donde se nos cuenta la peripecia de un conserje del Gran Hotel Budapest, Monsieur Gustave H. y un botones, Zero Moustapha, buscando deshacer una falsa acusación de asesinato. El realizador norteamericano, siempre muy cuidadoso con las ambientaciones, eligió como escenarios las ciudades alemanas de Görlitz y de Dresde, que recreaban la imaginaria ciudad de Lutz en la República de Zubrowka donde transcurre la acción. ¿Y el Hotel? Pese a que la fachada rosa pastel del Palace Bristol Hotel de la ciudad balneario checa de Karlovy Vary aparece en el cartel de la película, en realidad, nada fue filmado allí. Un hotel especial, de otro tiempo, en el que el conserje Monsieur Gustave H., es algo más que un empleado, es un connaiseur que hace la estancia de los visitantes algo relmente agradable. Un lugar en el que se respira ese aire de civilización algo anticuada que alguna vez fue real. And what about the hotel? Despite the fact that the pastel pink façade of the Palace Bristol Hotel in the Czech spa town of Karlovy Vary appears on the film poster, nothing was actually filmed there at all. A special hotel from another time where the concierge Monsieur Gustave H. is something more than just an employee; he is a connoisseur who transforms the time spent there by guests into truly pleasant experiences. A place where that once common and somewhat antiquated air of civilisation survives strong. The Grand Budapest Hotel does not exist, but this fantastic film has now become a classic of the hotel cinema genre.
