The planting of the first trees

More than a thousand trees will eventually cover the whole of Mareterra, thus making this new district the “greenest” in all of Monaco. The first ones arrived on site in 2022 a little ahead of schedule. Approximately thirty small and medium-sized trees were planted on the roofs of the Villas de la Colline. These are mainly holly, white and Spanish oaks, but also West Indians locust and arbutus trees.

These trees, selected at the very beginning of the project, were the object of a contract signed with a nursery in Pistoia, Italy, in order to meet Mareterra’s specifications as closely as possible. Planting will continue onsite throughout 2023, particularly in the spring and autumn in order to respect the natural growth cycle. The vast majority of trees will thus have been planted in the new district before the end of the year.

2023, l’année du second œuvre et des aménagements extérieurs

Effectif : le pic atteint

Comme indiqué précédemment, les opérations de gros œuvre ont, pour leur très large majorité, été réalisées. Celles relatives à l’extension du Grimaldi Forum et du parking public doivent encore être terminées, ce qui sera chose faite avant la fin du premier semestre en cours, et des deux dernières villas. De nombreux acteurs du second œuvre ont fait leur apparition sur le site. Et leur nombre va évoluer très sensiblement jusqu’à atteindre un pic, le plus grand nombre d’intervenants sur Mareterra de l’histoire du chantier avec près de 2 000 professionnels simultanément contre 800 en début d’année dernière ! Parmi eux, les électriciens, plombiers-climaticiens, menuisiers, peintres, staffeurs, serruriers… C’est dire si la logistique occupe un rôle central dans cette organisation. Une stratégie quotidienne afin que chacun puisse travailler dans les meilleures conditions de confort, d’efficacité, de respect du planning mais aussi et surtout de sécurité.

As indicated above, the structural work activities have, for the most part, been completed. Activities involving the extension of the Grimaldi Forum, the public car park, and of the last two villas are scheduled to be completed by the end of first half of 2023. Many finish workers have come onsite. The number of workers onsite will increase significantly until reaching a peak of 2,000, the largest number of people working simultaneously on Mareterra in the history of the project, versus 800 at the start of last year! They include electricians, plumbers and HVAC technicians, carpenters, painters, plasterers, locksmiths, etc. This just shows how logistics plays a central role in this organisation — a daily strategy so that everyone can work in the optimal conditions of comfort, efficiency, and in compliance with the schedule, but also and above all: safety.

Façades, the challenge of the year

Le gros œuvre achevé, le travail a pu débuter à l’intérieur des différents bâtiments mais aussi sur les façades elles-mêmes. Des opérations majeures tant le soin apporté à ces éléments atteint un niveau d’exigence particulièrement élevé. À commencer par le Renzo où, les fenêtres ayant été mises en place, les compagnons œuvrent désormais à la pose des parties opaques. Avec une longueur totale de 130 mètres, le Renzo constitue le bâtiment emblématique de Mareterra et fait alors appel à des techniques particulières. Ses façades métalliques du plus bel effet sont en cours de réalisation. Elles seront recouvertes d’une couleur blanc-bleu appliquée selon la technique du thermolaquage afin de garantir sa durabilité. En 2023, le bâtiment va progressivement se parer de sa robe et transmettre l’impression de légèreté recherchée par Renzo Piano.

Parallèlement, sur les Villas de la Colline sont en train d’être mises en place les façades de pierre, à base de pierre de Chandoré, retenue là aussi pour ses qualités esthétiques et de durabilité. Elles y sont installées selon la technique de l’agrafage au rendu des plus soignés. Des opérations de réalisation des façades que l’on retrouve également en 2023 sur les bâtiments des Jardins d’Eau. Un ensemble d’opérations qui laissent progressivement deviner le niveau de finition de l’ensemble du projet.

Once the structural work was completed, work could begin inside the various buildings but also on the façades themselves. These façades require a high level of care. Starting with the Renzo, where the windows have been put in place, the workers are now installing the opaque parts. 130-meters-long, the Renzo constitutes the emblematic building of Mareterra and therefore requires special techniques. Its magnificent metal façades are in progress. They will be covered with a white-blue colour, applied using the powder coating technique to guarantee its durability. In 2023, the building will gradually take on its final appearance and convey the impression of lightness sought by Renzo Piano. At the same time, stone façades are being installed on the Villas de la Colline, using Chandoré stone, also chosen for its aesthetic qualities and durability. They are installed there using the most meticulous stapling technique. Work on the construction of façades will also take place in 2023 on the buildings of the Jardins d’Eau — that will gradually reveal the level of finish of the entire project.
