ABSTRACT Lars-Erik Larsson’s Konsert för Saxofon och Strakorkester was premiered by the dedicatee, Sigurd M. Rascher, on November 27, 1934 with great reception, immediately joining the ranks of great saxophone concerto repertoire. It is no surprise that Larsson is considered the father of the Swedish saxophone concerto, as this work preceded some of the most significant standard concerto works by Glazounov and Ibert and it helped to usher in a new trend of saxophone composition

by Swedish composers such as Erland von Koch and Werner Wolf Glaser. This Swedish saxophone tradition would later continue through efforts by Rascher’s daughter Carina and John-Edward Kelly.

With the saxophone concerto being as influential as it is, it is a curiosity as to why it is the only saxophone work that Larsson composed. With the composer’s Op. 1 being composed in 1927, his saxophone concerto was a very early work in the composer’s chronology, and yet, it remains his sole saxophone work.

The saxophone repertoire includes many successful and idiomatic transcriptions adapted from solo voice, wind, or string compositions and string quartet literature is often adapted to the saxophone quartet due to the instrumental homogeneity of these chamber music ensembles. The purpose of this research is to explore a selection of Lars-Erik Larsson’s solo and chamber string works and present performance adaptations for saxophonists. These arrangements will prove valuable for saxophonists who wish to explore Larsson’s later compositional output, vii

as well as give saxophone chamber ensembles the opportunity to perform Larsson’s music.

CHAPTER 1 LARS-ERIK LARSSON

Biography Lars-Erik Larsson maintained a busy professional life with active involvement in composition, education, and broadcasting that made him a cornerstone of twentieth century Swedish musical life.1 Although he did not write a lot, his compositions reflect a wide variety of influences and styles, and he composed music for nearly every solo instrument as well as his contributions to symphonic literature and opera.

Larsson was born Lars-Erik Vilner Larsson on May 15, 1908 in the small locality of Åkarp in south Sweden. There has not been much written about Larsson’s early life until he took the organ examination in Växjö at the age of sixteen and received a Certificate in Organ Performance.2 He then began his formal collegiate studies at the Stockholm Conservatory in 1925, where he studied composition with Ernest Ellberg and conducting with Olallo Morales. His first symphony, composed in 1927-1928 drew much attention and he was awarded a state composer’s grant from the Swedish government to travel to Vienna and Leipzig to study composition with Alban Berg and Fritz Reuter.3 After completing his studies, Larsson worked as a coach at the Royal Theater in Stockholm while continuing to teach music in Malmö 1 Mark Satola, “Lars-Erik Larsson.”

and Lund. He also worked as a music reviewer at the Lunds Dagblad (Lund’s Daily newspaper) from 1933 – 1937.4 Larsson’s Sinfonettia was performed at the International Society for Contemporary Music festival in 1934 and brought him international recognition as he continued to build a reputation for himself as a composer through the 1930s. From 1937 to 1943 he worked as a conductor, composer, and producer for Swedish radio and he supervised the non-professional symphony orchestra from 1945 to 1947.5 It was as the administrator of this staterun amateur orchestra that Larsson wrote his Twelve Concertini, Op. 45 for professional soloists to be featured with the amateur orchestra. These collective works featured solo parts for all of the major string instruments (violin, viola, violoncello, double bass) and the major orchestral wind instruments (flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, French horn, trumpet, trombone), and piano. One of the most remarkable features of these twelve works is that they were written with the amateur player in mind and could be accessible to the player of moderate ability.6 Larsson remained the conductor for the Swedish radio chamber orchestra until 1953. Additionally, he served as professor of composition at the Stockholm Conservatory from 1947 – 1959 and later became the director of music at Uppsala

University from 1961 – 1966 before retiring in 1971 to Helsingborg.7 Larsson died in Helsingborg in 1986 at the age of 78.

Compositional Periods and Style

Lars-Erik Larsson composed in a wide variety of styles and across many

musical genres. Beginning as a disciple of Sibelius, his music is often recognized for its wit and Nordic lyricism.8 His time in Vienna under the tutelage of Alban Berg undoubtedly had a great influence over his compositional output and Larsson is widely credited as the first Swedish composer to write a piece in the dodecaphonic style, as evident in select movements of the 10 Two-Part Piano Pieces, Op. 8 (1932).

During this same period, in the 1930s, Larsson became deeply rooted in the

Neoclassical style with works such as his Hindemith-influenced Sinfonietta for Strings, Op. 10 (1932), Little Serenade for Strings, Op. 12 (1934), Concert Overture, No. 2, Op. 13 (1934), Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra, Op. 14 (1934), and Divertimento No. 2, Op. 15 (1935). Slightly more adventurous, but still within this style, are his Symphony No. 2, Op. 17 (1937) and the opera Princessen av Cypern (The Princess from Cyprus) which were both withdrawn shortly after their respective premieres.9

Larsson’s appointment to his post in Swedish Radio in 1937 saw his

conducting light music, and producing programs. During this time, his compositions centered around his work in radio, although he was also writing, quite lucratively, for the stage and cinema, having composed music for close to thirty films in the 1940s and 1950s altogether.10In collaboration with the Swedish writer and poet, Hjalmar Gullberg, Larsson helped to create a new radio genre, the lyric suite.

Larsson composed a number of these lyric suites, poems that were interspersed with short musical movements, and they became the source of some of his most popular concert works, Pastoral Suite for chamber orchestra, Op. 19 (1938) and Förklädd gud (A God in Disguise), Op. 24 (1940). These lyric suites tended more toward the neoromantic style than the earlier neoclassical counterparts, influenced

by Richard Wagner and the 19th-century Swedish composer Franz Berwald, and including a mix of Swedish folk music and dance influence.11

The 1940s saw Larsson return to substantial independent compositions in

the form of his first string quartet, String Quartet No. 1 in D minor, Op. 31 (1944) and Symphony No. 3 in C minor, Op. 34 (1944-5). This period is also marked by a stylistic shift to a more modern sound influenced by Paul Hindemith, best heard in his Cello Concerto, Op. 37 (1946-7), Musik för orkester, Op. 40 (1948-9), and Violin Concerto, Op. 42 (1952).12 Larsson returned to his earlier neoclassical roots in his aforementioned opus 45 concertinos.

The late 1950s saw yet another revision to Larsson’s compositional style

with a return to twelve-tone ideas that he had previously explored after his studies with Alban Berg. There are hints at twelve-tone technique in the Kyrie of his 1954 Missa Brevis, but now Larsson began to develop his own style of dodecaphony based, not on series of notes but, rather, clusters of notes referred to as “interval piles” (e.g. four groups of three notes separated by a major 3rd or three groups of four notes separated by a minor 3rd).13 Compositions written in this highly unique form of serialism include the Adagio for Strings, Op. 48 (1960), Three Pieces for Orchestra, Op. 49 (1960), and Variations for Orchestra, Op. 50 (1962), and highlight a similar introspective, serious character. Reaching back to his earlier stylistic influences, Larsson once again returned to a neo-classical style in the form of some lesserknown chamber works while incorporating elements of humor and musical wit in his orchestral works Due Auguri, op. 62 (1971) and Raa Rokoko, op. 64 (1973).14

Larsson wasn’t among the most prolific composers of his time, but he wrote

very well and his music is incredibly approachable for a wide audience. His lyrical sense of melody holds a special charm, while his folk-influenced dances are lighthearted and fun; contrastingly, his more serious works touch the listener in a deep way.

Lars-Erik Larsson wrote only one composition for the saxophone in his 1934

Concerto for Alto Saxophone, Op. 14 dedicated to and premiered by the German saxophone virtuoso Sigurd Rascher. The young composer and saxophonist met one another in the spring of 1934 at the Festival of the International Society for Contemporary Music in Florence. Rascher was in attendance to perform in two works by Honegger and Holtzmann while Larsson’s Sinfonietta was on the program as well. Rascher writes of his first meeting with Larsson in the Winter 1987 issue of The Saxophone Symposium: We met over a cup of espresso late one night. By the second cup, we had discovered that we lived close together – Larsson in a small village in southern Sweden, I in Copenhagen, across the Sound. And we were born on the same day, just one year apart! Any wonder that friendship was instantaneous? He had heard me play and I had heard his music and liked it very much; genuine mutual respect. Not much talk was needed. Two talents would join forces. Between concert tours I visited Lars-Erik often in Åkarp.

By now he knew the saxophone intimately and the muse began to sing. “Yes, yes Sigurd, before long the concerto will be completed.”15

The premiere of the new work was set for November 27, 1934 with the

Norrköping Symphony Orchestra, Tord Benner conducting. Of particular interest, this date was only one day after the premiere of another iconic saxophone concerto, the Concerto in Eb, Op. 109 by Russian romantic composer Alexander Glazunov. In the months leading to its premiere, Rascher had received the first movement with its winding triplet melodic lines and altissimo-laden cadenza, and the second movement with its heart-wrenching lyricism; however, he did not receive the final

movement of the concerto until the middle of November, the month of its premiere.

Within a few days after its first performance, Rascher performed the concerto in Zürich and Lugano and it was performed fourteen times in the following year.

Exactly three years after its premiere, on November 27, 1937, Rascher performed the work with the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London under the baton of Lars-Erik, himself. This performance proved to be an historic event, as it marked the first time than an instrumental concerto was broadcasted live on television.16 In total, Rascher performed the work almost one hundred times and with the composer on the podium a total of five times.

Even today with the wealth of literature, Larsson’s Concerto maintains its

position as an important staple in the early saxophone concerto repertory. It is one of the first pieces of its kind for saxophone to explore the sounds of non-standard tonality and it helped to expand the interest of saxophone performance in Sweden.17 Larsson’s folk lyricism is ever-present and the second movement is, arguably, among the most beautiful notes written for the saxophone; however, the excessive use of the extended range is not for the faint of heart. Saxophone pedagogue and virtuoso, Fred Hemke, credits this work with a push to learn altissimo. In his book The Devil’s Horn, author Michael Segell shares the following anecdote, During his junior year at the University of Wisconsin, he went to France to study with Mule and became the first American to win the Premier Prix de Saxophone at the Paris Conservatory. asked to play a new concerto by the composer Lars-Erik Larsson that reached high into the altissimo range. “It scared the crap out of me,” he says.

“So I worked hard to learn how to play altissimo.”18

As a saxophonist and advocate of new music, Sigurd Rascher was particularly

interested in expanding the self-imposed boundaries and limitations that the instrument’s performers often placed on themselves. Adolphe Sax envisioned an instrument with a larger range than the meager two-and-a-half octaves that the instruments natural keyed range allows. Rascher knew this to be true and set out to commission many works that demonstrated and exemplified this register. Some of the pieces written for and/or dedicated to Rascher, and which make use of this extended altissimo register, some sparingly and some extensive, include: Paul Hindemith’s Konzertstück für Zwei Altsaxophone (1933), Alexander Glazunov’s Concerto in Eb, Op. 109 (1934), Jacques Ibert’s Concertino da Camera (1935), Frank Martin’s Ballade (1938), Henry Brant’s Concerto (1941), Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto (1949), Warren Benson’s Concertino (1955), and Karel Husa’s Elegie et Rondeau (1960). Rascher was also a proponent of other extended tonal effects on the saxophone, such as flutter-tonguing and slap-tonguing, which are also included in Larsson’s Concerto; however, not all performers choose to realize all of these effects in their respective performances and interpretations.

Lars-Erik Larsson’s Concerto certainly has secured an important place, not

challenging to perform and is accessible to audiences of all musical backgrounds. It utilizes some extended techniques, but always in a musical way, never for the sake of simply exploiting a varied tonal palette. With the success of this composition and the friendship shared between Sigurd Rascher and Lars-Erik Larsson, it is of interest that Larsson only composed one piece that includes the saxophone as either a solo or chamber instrument. Larsson’s music is well-respected in the saxophone community and the level of playing is incredibly high as performers constantly look for new music to perform and adapt. It is for these reasons that this author has decided to adapt some of Larsson’s string works to the saxophone and introduce them as viable pieces of literature into the saxophone repertoire.

CHAPTER 2 ADAPTING STRING WORKS FOR SAXOPHONE

Special Considerations

When first approaching the select string compositions to determine their

potential as candidates for saxophone adaptations, the author considered a number of factors including string and saxophone natural and extended ranges, string bowings and their implications on saxophone articulations, and certain stringspecific techniques such as multiple stops and pizzicato. Harmony was also considered when determining whether or not to keep the works in their original keys.

Range

The first variable that must be taken into consideration when determining

the possibility of adapting a string work for saxophone is that of range. The bowed string family boasts an enormous range of seven octaves from the lowest double bass to the highest violin. Examples 1 and 2 show the standard ranges for the string family and the sounding ranges for their respective saxophone counterparts.

Because the standard string quartet configuration includes 2 violins, viola, and cello, these are the only string instruments explored in this section.

Clearly there are many potential issues concerning the ranges of the

respective instruments, particularly in the upper end of the registers. The upper extreme of the saxophone registers listed above refer only to the natural keyed range of the instruments and can certainly be extended further if the music requires it; however, one must be cautious of the increased difficulty of technique and 19 Samuel Adler, The Study of Orchestration (New York: W.W. intonation in the saxophone’s altissimo register as well as inevitable changes in timbre as the individual player’s upper limits are approached. The other major potential problem lies in the lowest possible note on the soprano saxophone, being located one semitone higher than the lowest open string on the violin, concert Ab and concert G, respectively. In recent years, as more and more concert saxophonists have taken to serious exploration and transcription of core violin repertoire, some have gone to great lengths in order to obtain this one extra note to avoid having to rewrite any musical lines containing the offending pitch or transposing the entire piece up a semitone. Munich-based saxophone technician Benedikt Eppelsheim, well-known for his bass and contrabass saxophones, began successfully adding a custom-built low A key, with identical mechanical key work to the low A key standard on the baritone saxophone, in the mid-late 2000’s. Although it has not become widely popular due to its extensive reconstructive process and matching price tag, several saxophonists around the world have made the leap to low A soprano saxophones for their ability to play violin repertoire true to the intentions of the original composer.

Specific instrument ranges found within each composition and subsequent

arrangement will be further explored and discussed in the respective corresponding chapter and fingering suggestions will be provided for technical altissimo passages.

Pizzicato Pizzicato is a bowless technique used frequently on string instruments created by the plucking of a string with the index finger of the bow hand. This 12

technique is widely used to create a soft timbral change or to accompany another instrument playing with the bow; however, there is no exact counterpart in the saxophone’s vast collection of timbral possibilities. One must consider the intended effect of the pizzicato in the original composition. If the desired effect is simply a short, non-reverberant pitch, then perhaps a staccato tongue on the saxophone would suffice. On the other hand, if the initial accent of the plucked string is determined to be of great importance, then a pitched slap-tongue would probably be the best course of action on the saxophone. In his dissertation Writing for Saxophones: A Guide to the Tonal Palette of the Saxophone Family for Composers, Arrangers and Performers, Jay C. Easton identifies and describes four distinctive slap-tonguing, or saxophone pizzicato, techniques: 1. melodic slap or pizzicato (clearly pitched): melodic “plucking” sound 2. slap tone (clearly pitched): melodic slap attack followed by normal tone 3. woodblock slap (unpitched): soft, dry percussive sound 4. explosive or open slap (unpitched): loud percussive sound20

In order to best emulate the idiomatic pizzicato sound produced by a string instrument, the first example listed above would be the most appropriate and the closest to achieving a true pizzicato sound. To produce a slap tongue on the saxophone, the performer must create suction-cup effect between the flat surface of the tongue and the surface of the reed. This can be accomplished by pulling the middle of the tongue away from the reed while maintaining contact with the edges

of the tongue. The tongue is then released from the reed in a quick, downward thrust resulting in a percussive, plucked sound, accompanied by a small impulse of air to allow the pitch to resonate slightly. One could think of the small burst of air as an involuntary cough, although very little air from the lungs actually enters the saxophone mouthpiece when producing the slap tongue technique. In order to adjust the amount of resonance or the length of decay, the saxophonist can adjust the amount of air entering the mouthpiece accordingly, moving toward the slap tone, the second model listed above.

Slap tongue notation has, over the years, become relatively standard, usually

indicated with a plus-sign (+) in the same location that a staccato or accent would normally be found, either above or below the desired note head. Another common variation, although not as desirable due to potential confusion in interpretation or difficulty reading, is to use an “x� in place of a note head, commonly found in percussion notation (see example 3).

While slap-tonguing a single pizzicato line might work well, it is worth

considering the potential compounded effect of multiple saxophone voices slaptonguing simultaneously, as this could possibly result in too heavy of an articulation collectively, especially if the group consists of any saxophonists new to the technique. It is the advice of the author to experiment with combinations of slap14

tongue and regular staccato tonguing to find the desired overall effect. In Example 4, one possible way to prevent the percussive slap from becoming too heavy might be to interpret the notation in the manner of the second measure, with the alto and baritone saxophone playing light staccato notes and the tenor saxophone light slaptonguing in order to provide the proper balance of pitch and “pluck” (see example 4).

Ultimately, the performing ensemble must make an informed performance decision based on careful forethought, knowledge of individual performers’ strengths, their own artistic vision and desired effect, and, admittedly, some trial and error.

Multiple Stops When two or more notes are sounded on adjacent strings, this is referred to as a multiple stop, more specifically, double stops, triple stops, or quadruple stops, dependent on the number of notated and sounding notes.21 Multiple stops pose a problem when attempting to adapt to the saxophone, as there is not a technique that 21 Samuel Adler, 11.

quite closely emulates the desired effect. It is possible to create multiple simultaneous sounds on the saxophone, multiphonics, but the number of possibilities are limited to the acoustical properties of each instrument. To this end, it is incredibly unlikely that all of the necessary multiple stop notations in a string score will be feasible on the saxophone. To further complicate matters, multiphonics are often unstable, slow to respond, and may only be producible at specific dynamic ranges. Furthermore, re-articulation runs the risk of disturbing the response of certain less stable multiphonic sounds. Because of the limited tonal palette and the complications discussed here, this author has not considered multiphonic sounds on the saxophone as a viable arrangement technique for use in the adaptation of these string works.

Depending on the context, some multiple stops could be strategically dealt with in the arrangement of the voices. In the following example, a C major triad is voiced across the viola and two violin voices with an open fifth of D and A in the bass voices. In the saxophone setting, the C major triad is reinforced in the upper three voices while the D remains in the bass voice. Although the open fifth sound between the D and A is no longer present, the overall color of the chord remains true to the original. Example 5 illustrates this potential strategic arrangement of multiple stops found in string quartet writing.

Another possible way of dealing with multiple stops is to arpeggiate or “roll�

through the chord, notating with grace notes. This works well when one note of the multiple stop, ideally the highest or lowest note of the chord, belongs clearly to the melody, while the other notes play an accompanimental role. In this instance, one could arpeggiate up the chord or down the chord to the appropriate melodic note. In the example 6, the upper note of the violin triple stop clearly belongs to the rest of the descending melodic line and could be interpreted on the saxophone as a quick descending arpeggio from the Eb and through the Bb, with the G being the primary note.

Still another option in the adaptation of string multiple stops to the

saxophone is to simply disregard the multiple notes and opt for notating only the integral melodic note. While not always the most ideal, this works well in lyrical writing with a large number of multiple stops in which the constant arpeggiating of chords would interrupt the flow of the musical line. This is also a viable option when one of the notes notated in the multiple stops is a pedal note as seen in example 7.

Although both of these could be potential options, the second realization allows the primary melody to come to the forefront without the constant interruption of the choppy, angular arpeggiated leaps.

Articulations

String instruments are recognized by their unmatched lyrical beauty but also

for their ease in producing rapid-fire technical runs due to the stringed bow capable of producing notes in both directions, up-bow and down-bow, in quick succession.

Whereas string articulation is dictated by the speed of the bow, saxophonists are limited by the speed at which they can move the tip of their tongue. The lower the 18

saxophone being played, the more arduous task it becomes to articulate lightly and quickly due to the increased size of the mouthpiece and reed as well as the relative amount of mouthpiece being inserted into the mouth. Although the tongue’s flexibility and agility can be worked on and developed, the maximum speed for most saxophonists is around sixteenth notes at 120 beats per minute.22 Anything faster than this may necessitate the use of a double-tongue or triple-tongue technique.

Saxophonists, like other wind instruments, create a double tongue by using a secondary articulation created by the back of the tongue touching the roof of the mouth (as in saying a “koo” or “goo” sound) in quick alteration with the primary articulation syllable created by the tip of the tongue (as in saying a “too” or “doo” sound). Although the technique is the same, multiple-tonguing on the saxophone, and other reed instruments, is arguably more difficult than other instruments such as flute or trumpet, due to the fact that they mouthpiece and reed are inserted into the mouth and can interfere with the tongue’s range of motion. Multiple-tonguing can take a lot of time to perfect on the saxophone and even longer to increase the tempo while maintaining an even, matched articulation between the primary and secondary tongue syllables.

It is ultimately the performer’s decision on how to realize the quick string

articulations, keeping in mind their own strengths and weaknesses in articulation technique. If deciding to double-tongue, the saxophonist must ensure that they can do so without drawing unnecessary attention to the technique that they are using; 22 Jay C. Easton, 250.

this extended articulation must not detract from the musical line. If double-tonguing is not possible, it is advised that the saxophonist determine an appropriate alternative articulation scheme that will help to maintain the integrity of the music (see example 8).

The author of the arrangements presented here has made the decision to

keep notated articulations as close to the original string scores as possible, leaving the final decision up to the performer and their individual skill and artistic judgment.

Breathing

Another distinct advantage to the performance of a string instrument is their

ability to produce a sound continuously, unhampered by the performer’s need to stop and take a breath, an attribute very distinctive from that of wind instruments.23 Saxophonists, and other wind instrumentalists, must take great care when determining places to breathe when recreating and reimagining works of string literature, paying attention to the natural ebb and flow of the musical line as well as the lengths of phrases. It is worth mentioning that there is a marked difference 23 Samuel Adler, 8.

between breathing and phrasing and the taking of a breath does not necessarily mark the end of a phrase. Performers in need of a quick breath should be mindful of the phrase and take their breath in a manner that does not interrupt the energy and cadence of that phrase.

For those performers seeking the continuous, uninterrupted, sound capable of being produced by string instruments, it is possible to extend the saxophone sound beyond the constraints of a single breath through a learned extended technique called circular breathing.24 Although a seemingly impossible feat, circular breathing has been used for centuries both in and out of the musical world as a means of playing certain musical instruments, such as the Australian didgeridoo, as well as in specific crafts like metalworking and glassblowing. In circular breathing, the saxophonist takes in short, quick breaths through the nose while air, which is stored in the cheeks, is used to supplement to air normally supplied by the lungs.

The muscles of the cheeks act as a bellows, pushing air from the mouth through the instrument while a breath is taken quickly through the nose, in a sniffing manner.

The technique is tricky and requires much practice to master; however, it is becoming increasingly important to learn in modern saxophone performance and its mastery makes the performance of string music much easier and more idiomatic.

Just as when planning places to breathe and phrase, marking in breath marks, the saxophonist who wishes to utilize circular breathing in their interpretation of string repertoire would be wise to plan their circular breath locations as well, especially 24 Jay C. Easton, 244.

when first using the technique. It is difficult to circular breathe in the extreme registers of the saxophone, so it is best to find a location in the mid-register.

Additionally, the transitions between tone production from the air in the lungs, to that stored in the cheeks, and back to the lungs can create unwelcome turbulence in the sound, so it is advantageous to plan a breath during a section when the fingers are moving in order to disguise this potential bump. Through much practice, it is possible to circular breathe across the entire family of saxophones and create a seemingly endless musical line that is well-adapted to the performance of string literature.

CHAPTER 3 CONCERTINO FOR VIOLIN, OP. 45:8

Background When Lars-Erik Larsson was appointed to lead the amateur state orchestra in 1945, he very quickly realized that the group was in great need of modern repertoire that was feasible for the non-professional ensemble to perform. The resulting 12 Concertini, Op. 45 is an incredibly valuable and unique undertaking that took the composer a few years from 1955 to 1957 to complete. Each concertino includes an advanced solo part that would most likely be performed by a professional musician, likely a guest soloist, and a comparatively simple string orchestra accompaniment. Despite the fact that the pieces were conceived of as simple, easily attainable works, the craftsmanship and quality was at such a high level that even professional orchestras gladly performed them. The twelve compositions are individually numbered in score order, not necessarily in the order of completion, and each contain three movements, wherein the slow second movement is neatly framed by two quicker movements in condensed sonata-allegro form.25 The three movements of the Violin Concertino are marked as follows: I.

Allegro moderato (quarter note = 116)

II.

Cavatina: Andante con moto (quarter note = 80)

The first movement is warm and vocal in its melodic character and features quick pivots between duple and triple meter. Its more driving lines are scalar, making frequent use of pentatonic scales (see example 9), while its most beautiful melodic lines are characterized by their open harmonic sounds (see example 10).

The second movement is given the subtitle of “Cavatina”, referring to its simple, melodic nature that is steeped in a restrained folk influence. Notated in three-four time, the music often hints at a slip into six-eight time, although the time signature remains constant (see example 11).

The finale of the violin concertino is a fun and energetic romp that features

violin-specific techniques such as double- and triple-stops and pizzicato, and idiomatic repeated sixteenth notes, easily executed on a string instrument. Again, Larsson plays with the perception of time with the use of a hemiola effect, here implying a three-eight melody within a two-four time signature (see example 12).

Range

As mentioned in the previous chapter, range considerations are among the

primary concerns when adapting the music of string instruments to that of the saxophone. In the first movement four-measure unaccompanied cadenza, the violin dips down to its lowest playable note of G, which is one semitone lower than the lowest playable note on the soprano saxophone (concert Ab). At first glance, the obvious decision was to simply take the concert Gs up an octave; however, that interrupts the playful nature that the disjunct octaves give this passage in its original version. By transposing the entire three-measure section containing the low 25

Gs up an octave, the melodic contour is preserved while maintaining a smooth segue back into the original octave (see example 13).

The decision was made to include the optional 8vb marking for those few

saxophonists who own a low-A soprano and who wish to perform a most historically accurate arrangement of this work. The majority of performers will play the line in the octave notated in the arrangement, allowing for a small, relatively unnoticeable compromise to deal with the one unplayable note.

The more pressing concern with range in the violin concertino is that of the

high extreme end of the range. The range utilized in this work is a G3 on the low end, extending to a C#7 at its highest point at the end of the second movement. This range is one semitone lower than the soprano saxophone on the low end and an augmented fifth above the natural range of the soprano saxophone on the upper end (see example 14).

Unlike the low end of the range, that is determined by the length of the closed saxophone tube, the upper end of the range can be extended an indeterminate amount, depending on the individual player’s ability. The very best saxophonists can comfortably play an entire octave above, and some even higher, than the natural keyed range of the instrument. Because the highest notes of this altissimo register can cause difficulties in response and intonation and because these effects are augmented by playing at incredibly soft dynamic levels, the arranger has left one passage up to the discretion of the performer (see example 15).

With these exceptions, all other passages in the violin concertino have been

kept in their originally conceived octaves in order to stay true to the wishes of the original composer.

CHAPTER 4 STRING QUARTET NO. 3, OP. 65 Background

Larsson’s String Quartet No. 3, Op. 65 was written near the very end of his

long, prolific career. Although he lived until 1986, this work written in 1975 proved to be his last significant composition.26 Written in three movements, it diverts from the traditional fast-slow-fast configuration that would be expected, especially from such a neo-classical work. Instead, the three movements are ordered as follows: I.

Allegro (quarter note = 132)

II.

Allegretto (eighth note = 112) – Presto (dotted half note = 88) – Allegretto

III.

Largo (quarter note – 50)

The piece begins with an allegro that is incredibly rhythmic in nature and ends with an open-ended, question mark of a phrase. With most of the movement being in quadruple time, the change in the last five bars of the opening movement into shifting permutations of eight-eight time (3+2+3 and 2+3+3) leaves the listener guessing while also seguing nicely into the second movement (see example 16).

Another feature of the first movement is an exciting one-beat canon first occurring in measure 19, creating ripple motions from the top voice down the ensemble and, eventually, back up in ms. 32 (see example 17).

The second movement is in a three-eight triple meter and begins with all

voices playing light pizzicato lines before breaking into full string writing. This movement is full of twists and turns and unexpected playful humor. The Presto is fast moving with quick changes between pizzicato and bowed sections and similar 29

canonic motion between voices as those found in the first movement. These sudden alterations in timbre are lighthearted and fun to listen to as well as perform. In the presto section, the four instruments chase one another in quick succession, playing an ever-revolving melody reminiscent of children chasing one another in circles.

The presto screeches to a halt, yielding to a return of the opening Allegretto, somehow more reserved this time than at the start.

The final movement, Largo, is calm and introverted without being too

serious. The melody slightly resembles that of the second movement of Haydn’s Emperor Quartet, Op. 76 no. 327. The movement is one long crescendo to a decisive climax before winding down the way it came to an incredibly soft and still close marked senza vibrato.

Range The range for each respective instrument of Larsson’s String Quartet No. 3, Op. 65 are shown below next to their respective saxophone ranges in both concert pitch as well as their written transposition (see example 18).

In this composition, the ranges work very nicely for adaptation to the saxophone quartet. The Violin I voice is the only voice that extends below the low-end of its relative saxophone voice, by the interval of a half-step. The soprano, alto, and baritone voices extend into their upper altissimo registers while the viola’s range fits the tenor saxophone’s range perfectly. In this section, specific problems of instrument range in adapting this composition will be discussed.

In the first movement, at rehearsal marking 7, the violin descends to its low

open G, just out of reach for the soprano saxophone. Because the two violins are in unison here, this problem is easily remedied by displacing the soprano saxophone part up an octave for the first measure plus a note and repeating this same octave displacement in the fourth measure, fourth and fifth notes. Because the two violin parts are in unison, the changing of the soprano saxophone octaves on a couple of notes does not greatly affect the melodic contour of the lines being played nor the integrity of the intervals (see example 19).

Once again in the sixth measure of rehearsal marking 7, the first violin’s range extends below that of the soprano saxophone. Octave displacement is used once again, as the second violin covers the part in the same octave, comfortably in the range of the alto saxophone.

In measure 10 of the opening movement, the full quartet arpeggiates up an open fifth C-G-C with both upper and lower chromatic neighboring tones in an exciting and energetic driving rhythm. Most of the instruments are pushed to the highest extremes of their register, with the soprano, alto, and baritone saxophones surpassing their normal keyed range. In order to keep the texture light and the balance of the chord full without thinning out, the decision was made to move the baritone saxophone down an octave for the two beats prior to landing on the whole note two measures before rehearsal marking 1. This puts the baritone saxophone in a more comfortable register and fills out the bottom of the ensemble while keeping the original voicing of the chord in measure 11 (see example 20)

In measure 53 of the first movement, the cello plays a tricky line that features

a quick, angular octave leap, difficult to perform on the baritone saxophone due to the range and agility at which it must be executed. Rather than have the baritone saxophone cross the break above their normal keyed register, a rest is inserted to give the performer a quick opportunity to breathe before re-entering. The note that is omitted from the baritone saxophone part as a result is covered in the tenor saxophone part much more comfortably (see example 21). A similar decision was made in measures 87 – 88 to bring the alto, tenor, and baritone saxophones down an octave in order to avoid excessive and unnecessary altissimo technique. In measure 87, the four voices are in paired octaves: soprano and alto in unison with tenor and baritone in unison an octave lower. By transposing the lower three voices down an octave, no notes or melodic contours were altered, but the overall effect is to create three octave voicings rather than the original two, thickening the section.

Again, the decision was made to lower the octave of the baritone saxophone

part in the final two measures of the first movement; however, this time the decision was not made in order to avoid a passage extending out of range, rather to thicken the harmony at the end of the movement. This places the baritone saxophone an octave lower than the tenor saxophone, rather than in unison. The staccato eighth note allows for a much-needed breath for the baritone saxophonist to end the movement strong (see example 22).

In the third movement of the quartet, there are quite a few considerations

and concessions to be made as all of the voices cover a wide range. The saxophone voice most affected in this movement is the alto saxophone as the second violin extends to ranges previously played only by the first violin part. On three occasions 34

in this movement, the alto saxophone part is brought down by an octave, specifically in measures 11 – 14, 24 – 26, and 47 – 48. While the skilled alto saxophonist could play the notes in their original octaves, the harmony becomes thinned out and the timbre of these notes is not consistent with the violin playing in that same register.

Bringing the alto saxophone down places it in a more comfortable range without interrupting the passage of the melody taking place in these sections.

In measures 46 and 47 the alto saxophone extends beyond its normal range,

but simply bringing it down an octave leaves a large gap between the lower three voices and the soprano saxophone. The decision was made to switch the voicings of the alto and tenor saxophones on the first three notes before returning to their original parts on beat 4 of measure 47. This keeps a similar spacing between the individual notes of the chords while keeping the alto saxophone in a more comfortable range, especially at the notated dynamic level of pianissimo (see example 23).

Multiple Stops Larsson utilizes multiple stops in this string quartet only one time, found in the first movement during a violin I solo that is accompanied by pizzicato violin, viola, and strummed chords in the cello. The initial thought of the arranger was to expand the notes of the multiple stopped cello chord into the upper voices on their eighth rests. This option would only work for half of the multiple stops, as the upper voices are playing eighth note lines through the other half. Also, these upper voices are already slap-tonguing to simulate the pizzicato strings, and expanding these chords would eliminate any opportunity for these players to take a quick breath, thus, this option was quickly ruled out. The alternative, as mentioned in Chapter 2, is to roll through the chords as quick arpeggiated grace notes, which was the final decision of the arranger here. The marcato accents were added to the baritone saxophone part to indicate the shortness of the note as the original cello part is marked pizzicato at this section (see example 24).

Articulations

In striving for consistency across all parts of the quartet, some possible

articulation discrepancies were identified in the original score and have been edited in this arrangement for saxophone quartet. Beginning in the second movement, the baritone saxophone articulation in measures 8 and 109 have been changed, adding a slur from beat one to beat three as well as a tenuto marking over beat three, to match the articulations of the two higher voices. In measure 121, the tenuto marking on beat three in the tenor saxophone part has been changed to a staccato in order to match the articulations of the baritone saxophone in measure 120, the alto saxophone in measure 122, and the soprano saxophone in measure 123.

More discrepancies were found in the articulations of the third movement.

Beginning in measure 16 and extending to measure 19, the second violin and cello have matching articulations while the first violin and viola have matching articulations, but differ from the other two voices. Because the second violin begins this melody that is treated as a one-bar canon, the decision was made to keep all of the articulations consistent between voices (see example 25).

The same motif occurs in measures 28 – 31, this time with the cello beginning the canonic passage and having paired articulations with the first violin. Slurs were added in the two inner voices to match the preceding articulations. In both of the aforementioned sections (i.e. measures 16 – 19 and 28 – 31), there is another overlapping motif with quarter note, half note, quarter note rhythm, again being passed around with a one-measure canonic treatment. Each time this motif occurs, the arranger applied the same articulation, slurring from the half note on beat two to the quarter note on beat four (see example 26).

Harmony

In the final movement of the string quartet, there seems to be one wrong

note in the viola part in measure 15. Because this movement is built on a slowmoving canon with all four parts eventually rotating through the voices, measure 15 and measure 26 are complimentary. In the latter measure, the four voices combine to form a voiced Eb7 chord on the downbeat (see example 27).

The resulting chord on the downbeat of measure 15 is a cluster chord that is missing its most crucial root note of Eb. This is likely an editorial mistake and has been corrected in this arrangement. Because all other chord tones are present in measure 15, the tenor saxophone line has been edited by moving the concert Cb on the downbeat of measure 15 up to a concert Eb to complete the chord (see example 29).

CHAPTER 5 ADAGIO FOR STRING ORCHESTRA, OP. 48 Background

Not much is known of Lars-Erik Larsson’s Adagio for String Orchestra, Op. 48

outside of its composition date of 1960 and premiere performance for Swedish Radio by the Gothenburg Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Sixten Eckerberg.28 Listening to this work, it is clearly inspired from a troubled state, with a mood of torture, sorrow, and pain, strikingly different from much of Larsson’s neoclassical and folk-influenced compositional output.29 The piece is in a simple ABA form with cascading entrances and resolutions that happen just too early or just too late for concordance, as another voice has moved out of the anticipated resolution.

The piece finally resolves into a major key, perhaps giving some hope and comfort for the tormented soul.

Instrumentation

Larsson’s Adagio is scored for first violin, second violin, viola, cello, and

double bass, with cello and double bass sharing the same part. This instrumentation allows for a great deal of flexibility that could be performed for a full symphony orchestra string section which contains, according to Samuel Adler: 16 – 18 first violins 14 – 16 second violins 28 Örebro Chamber Orchestra, Lars-Erik Larsson: Music for Strings.

10 – 12 violas 10 – 12 cellos 8 – 10 double basses30 On the other end of the instrumentation spectrum, the four-part writing could be performed by as small a group as a simple string quartet.

In planning for this adaptation, the arranger warred back and forth over the

idea of fleshing out parts, filling out chords, and converting the four original parts into a work that could be performed by a true chamber saxophone ensemble with one performer per part. In the spirit of keeping the piece in its true form and delivering a historically accurate performance; however, that idea was discarded for keeping the original four-part instrumentation in tact. The resulting adaptation could, just as the original string version, be performed by a saxophone quartet with all parts being accurately represented; however, the ideal instrumentation would be a standard 12-piece saxophone ensemble (3 soprano saxophones, 3 alto saxophones, 3 tenor saxophones, and 4 baritone saxophones) at the minimum or, perhaps, an augmented saxophone ensemble of greater size, ensuring that all four parts are relatively equal and balanced.

Range The range for each respective instrument of Larsson’s Adagio for String Orchestra, Op. 48 are shown below next to their respective saxophone ranges in both concert pitch as well as their written transposition (see example 30).

The range for this composition is very conservative, with no one voice

covering a range of more than two full octaves. The placement of notes within the register of the respective string instruments also places them perfectly within the standard two-and-a-half octave keyed range of each saxophone, requiring no altissimo or creative arranging to cope with issues of range.

Performance Considerations

Of all the adaptations created for this project, this was the most

straightforward, readily arranged composition. It is important when interpreting this work that the performers keep in mind the original string instrumentation in terms of tone and balance. A spinning vibrato could be used throughout, especially during full volume sections. The ensemble and conductor must pay considerable attention to the loud dynamic levels, as a saxophone ensemble can easily overblow and overplay these sections and become too bright Instead, they should be

encouraged to think of these passages with a warm intensity rather than sheer volume.

CONCLUSION Lars-Erik Larsson’s contributions to Swedish culture and to the vast concert musical repertoire are incredible and his influence on the saxophone, though only composing one work, helped lead to an interest in Swedish saxophone performance and composition and ushered in a new generation of concert saxophone works. It is unfortunate that Larsson did not write more music for the saxophone and it is only up to speculation as to why this might be. Nonetheless, Larsson’s string music is full of energy, driving folk dance rhythms, passionate melodies, and a touch of wit and humor that makes it such a delight to perform. It is this author’s hope that these arrangements will help bring a new side of Larsson’s music to the saxophone community and that they will be cherished, studied diligently, welcomed into the standard repertoire, and, most importantly, performed often for delighted audiences.
