MAYBACH-SL MONOGRAM A Luxury Two-Door Boulevard Cruiser

T

he SL has been a revered moniker within the Mercedes-Benz range but this is the first time that the Maybach brand gets into the scheme of things. Maybach has been the luxury spin-off within the vast Mercedes-Benz world but this is also where they first introduce a two-door model with this brand name. Currently we have the EQS Maybach and models like the GLS and the S-Class which combine top tier luxury with bespoke customization. The SL Monogram applies all those ethos but within a delectable two-door canvas.

There would be two versions- Series Red Ambiance and the Series White Ambiance. One thing is for sure that there is no mistaking this for any other SL since it has a gleaming Maybach grille and a three-pointed star sitting at the top. There is also a chromed fin running front to rear along its center while owners can spec an obsidian black bonnet as an option. The detailing is also Maybach like with the symbol being added in many places to chrome juxtaposing with that paint.

Even the inside of the headlights is finished rose gold accents. It certainly looks authoritative and has a vibe of a luxury yacht albeit for the road.

Of course, the 21-inch forged wheels in 5-hole design or multi-spoke design look the part too. The interior meanwhile is bathed in the typical Maybach flair of materials with white Nappa leather in particular lifting the ambiance. Everything is white leather and there are galvanized seat backrests plus silver chrome trim. The difference Maybach steering wheel, stainless-steel pedals and the stainless-steel door sill trims are some of the other changes. With Maybach, a lot is spoken on quietness and making the SL Monogram much more refined was a priority.

Maybe the V8 roar had to be tone down to a more formal demeanor but some details like the insulated acoustic soft top, noise-optimized exhaust system and the comfort-oriented suspension point towards its GT-LIKE characteristics.

Based on the top-end SL, the powertrain is a 4.0-liter biturbo engine with 585 hp and a standard 9G-TRONIC automatic but the driving manners would be softened down. Compared to the lairier SL, the Maybach version turns things down a notch and is a boulevard cruise to be enjoyed at a slower pace. In-fact this enters the world of Bentley and Aston Martin with luxury convertibles still being a choice for the flamboyant select few. Hence, while competition is high, the Maybach SL reeks of luxury which we guess is a job well done. 

THE NEW LAMBORGHINI TEMERARIO The Future of the Raging Bull

T

he Lamborghini Gallardo was a landmark car for the Italian brand as till then it only had V12 supercars and nothing to bring to the market below that. Fast forward to today and the Huracan, which was a big success is now being replaced by the electrified Temerario, a new bull to lead the supercar market. While the flagship Revuelto will sit at the top of the range and the Urus will continue to expand the brand to new markets, the Temerario will be the one to bring in the new buyers for its two-door supercar range while also be a crucial pillar. It is an important car and Lamborghini has come out all guns blazing.

The biggest talking point is the fact that the V10 naturally aspirated unit has now been dropped off to the history books while a new V8 with electric assistance takes over. It is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 with no less than three electric motors with a combined output of 907 horsepower. That is a huge leap from the Huracan and the baby Lamborghini now edges into the territory of the fabled Bugatti Veyron! Who could have imagined the relentless technology race that leads to such power figures?

Back to the highlights and also new is an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission which replaces the seven speed of the Huracan while being lighter too. The electric motor also reduces emissions and lag. Performance enthusiasts will approve the figures as this new Lamborghini which is supposed to sit below the Revuelto, will race to 62 mph in 2.7 seconds while hitting a 213-mph top speed. Alongside usual drive modes, there are specific modes for the hybrid system and a drift mode when you are at a track!

The design might seem a bit fussy at the start but look closer and the new look Lamborghini design language is bursting out with various shapes. The lines are edgy but it is longer than the Huracan now. There are a lot of aero and hexagonal inspired elements all over too. The headlights are slimmer and meaner while the stance seems lowered along with a large spoiler at the rear. The interior meanwhile is a lot more luxurious and crucially, a lot more spacious now.

Thanks to a new architecture, there is more luggage and storage space as well.

There is even a frunk! The interior design is again hexagonal inspired but new is the quality of materials plus added technology including larger screens plus loads more features. wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, electrically adjustable seats, Telemetry etc.

With the Ad Personam program buyers would be able to customize their Temerario further and we expect deliveries to begin next year. Having made its debut at the Monterey Car Week, this new Lamborghini is set to be one of the hottest new supercars to hit the roads soon.

The 2024 DODGE CHARGER DAYTONA EV

M

uscle cars have been embedded in our memory with their burbling V8 exhaust note and the classic styling. However, ushering in the new electric era has raised a question whether cars like these can survive.

For Dodge, it was a bold decision to overhaul its Charger with an electric heart but in the process, it is the first all-electric muscle car in the world. It sounds convincing enough to pass off as a bonafide muscle car with its Fratzonic Chambered Exhaust which simulates a V8 like burble as the speed increases. It almost is impossible to believe that it is an EV with this synthesised soundtrack but for those who prefer being more discreet there is a Stealth mode. If we look at the prices, they start off at $61,590 while the top-spec Scat Pack will retail for $75,185. It means it costs a fair bit more over the conventional gas-powered iteration but is it worth it? For the Charger, the power figures dictate some serious performance with 670bhp- a whole lot more than the previous Charger.

In addition to Charger Daytona Scat Pack, all-electric Charger models include 496-horsepower 2024 Dodge Charger Daytona R/T. Like all performance EVs, the new electric Charger has a 400V system that will replicate V-8 performance but with zero tailpipe emissions and instant torque response. The system includes a high-voltage battery pack, a dual integrated charge module and both a front and rear electric drive module (EDM). The battery pack is a large 100.5 kWh and has a maximum discharge rate of 550 kW. The Scat Pack brings in the headline grabbing performance figures with a 0-60 mph time of 3.3 seconds and a quarter-mile in 11.5 seconds. Inside, the design is now more futuristic and packs in features like an 18-speaker Alpine sound system, a Carbon and Suede fettled roof and 12-way adjustable performance seats. The design and look are way more luxurious than the earlier Charger with more practicality too. While indeed being a lot more modern and having more power, an electric muscle car is quite controversial perhaps more so with its fake exhaust. However, it certainly looks desirable in its new avatar and is the closest we can get to an electric interpretation of an icon. 

NILU HYPERCAR An Analogue 1000 bhp plus Hypercar made in California

A

lmost every day we get a new hypercar festooned with a 1000 plus horsepower along with a price-tag hovering in the millions but this one is a bit different. Yes, it is also made with exotic materials and has a look which is akin to a spaceship but it is a surprisingly analogue recipe in this increasingly digital world. The Nilu hypercar is the brainchild of former Bugatti and Koenigsegg designer, Sasha Selipanov and is peppered with many interesting facets. The most alluring part of the car though is the exposed V12 and the lovely manual poking out from the admittedly, barebones interior.

The Nilu is all about the analogue driving experience and shuns any digital fripperies with only its digital rear view mirror being exception. The exotic carbon-fiber body is also sharpened with a scalpel as it has large intakes at one hand while at the other there is an exposed V12 along with those beautifully brutalist exhaust headers.

It is low-slung and has gullwing doors while adhering to the hypercar rulebook but has fixed seats along with analogue controls for everything. The steering wheel for example is small and does not have any toggles or switches while there is even a manual handbrake. The brand has gone to extreme lengths and even eliminated drive modes or any complicated driver aids. Everything is manual and some of the switches are cold-touched machine billet controls which have a more satisfying sense of connection.

The gauges are also bursting with the 80s theme while even those white wheels are very old-school. The engine is a 6.5-liter, 80-degree V12 with more than 1000 horsepower and it redlines to more than 10,000 rpm. Tere is no electrical assistance here and it is as analogue s it gets. The exhaust is 3D printed; the brakes are Carbon-ceramics from Brembo while it will do 0-60 mph in less than 3 seconds. With its debut at Pebble Beach, the initial batch of 15 examples would be built in Irvine, California while a production run of only 54 cars is done.

Pricing has not been revealed but expect in the millions for sure given its exclusive status. Compared to some of the other hypercars, the Nilu is refreshing because it abhors any digital interface at all and is simply about the joy of driving.

It is a rare hypercar but coming from an ex-designer of cars like the Chiron, the result is an intriguing take on where the hypercar can go in an age where instant performance via electrification is taken for granted.

BARBOUR TEAMS UP WITH THE WILLIAM MORRIS GALLERY FOR FALL

he coming together of two British brands to offer a fashionable 6-piece capsule collection.

Beloved lifestyle and heritage brand Barbour has joined forces with William Morris Gallery – a museum that is dedicated to the influential arts and crafts designer, William Morris on a collection that is dedicated to tradition.

When it comes to the inspiration behind the collection, the brands went back into their archives and immediately looked to the Eye Bright and Wey Print prints, which were originally designed in 1883.

Made right up to date, these leafy and floral prints have been reissued in brand-new colors, just for the capsule line.

Neatly tailored, the traditional designs are lined with the William Morris prints for a flash of color. The clothing is dramatic and delicate, donning all-over-prints and floaty ruffles. The global watchmaker Arnold & Son thrills timepiece collectors with two new dial variants to the Perpetual Moon 38 collection.

ith two limited-edition dials, the radiance of Perpetual Moon 38 Gold’s 88 pieces in blue aventurine glass and 28 pieces in a warm, sunray-brushed grey joins that of the largest moon phase. Arnold & Son exhibits its mastery of color, its sense of texture and its taste for materials, telling a nocturnal narrative that brings together the grey of a cliff, the iridescent white of the moon and the almost black blue of a starry sky.

From the outset, Perpetual Moon 38 was destined to become a fully-fledged collection, distinct from its larger 41.5 mm diameter cousin and its more assertive style.

Measuring 38 mm in diameter and 10.44 mm thick, the case of Perpetual Moon 38 Red Gold is brought to life from a block of red gold (5N). Its bezel, four lugs and crown are polished, shining under the cold light of the moon. The blue aventurine dial, constellated with metallic particles, blends into a celestial vault sculpted from the same glass. The ‘cliff grey’ dial, in a warm, sunray-brushed grey, boasts an ever-shifting

moiré effect under a grained matte midnight blue sky.

These two limited editions of Perpetual Moon 38 Red Gold are home to a huge moon phase. This luminescent disc of mother-of-pearl illuminates the sky, framed by the constellations of Cassiopeia and Ursa Major.

Perpetual Moon 38 Red Gold transposes the watchmaking requirements that have always guided Arnold & Son into its slender case. The Arnold & Son Swiss manufacture has designed an entirely new caliber, the smallest in its collection, and dedicated it to Perpetual Moon 38.

At 30 mm, the A&S1612 caliber has been sized to fit the diameter of the case. The hand-wound movement continues Arnold & Son’s tradition of calibers with long power reserves, reaching 90 hours.

The star complication of the A&S1612 calibre is its moon phase. Perpetual Moon 38 showcases a large moon disc. The different crescents occupy the large aperture between 10 and 2 o’clock, with the form of their cut-out faithfully recreating the appearance of the moon.

odinkee, the leading destination for all things horology, has partnered with luxury watch manufacturer TAG Heuer for their third collaboration, step forth, TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee.

The previous collaborations with TAG Heuer, the Carrera Skipper and Carrera Dato, were homages to the rich heritage of TAG Heuer, whilst moving it forward. The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee is no different, designed as a revival of the iconic Abercrombie & Fitch Seafarer, which Heuer produced for the sporting goods retailer from the 1950s into the 1970s.

A contemporary Carrera, updated for today’s adventures with the design ethos of one of Hodinkee’s favorite and most notable vintage Heuer references. Maintaining the color codes and bezel aesthetic from the 1968 model, this collaboration embraces the modern spirit of TAG Heuer. The Seafarer is a legendary watch with roots in the mid-century, a time when watches were put to the test, worn hard, and often designed and used for specific pursuits. The Seafarer evokes images of the sea, the sand, and the sun and brings to mind the name Abercrombie & Fitch.

The TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer × Hodinkee is a modern, robust, and exciting interpretation of a favorite Seafarer reference. The Hodinkee Limited

Edition now resides in the 42mm Carrera “Glassbox” case. The domed sapphire crystal allows for the profile of a vintage plexiglass crystal while being significantly more durable and clearer--both critical factors while out on the water. True to the color codes of the original, the black opaline dial is accented by shades of both sky and royal blue across the Regatta and Tide subdials. As the Carrera is a bezel-less case, the watch has maintained the original’s aesthetic by moving the bezel inside the rehaut in a matching black opaline.

“The story of the Seafarer captures so much that makes watchmaking exciting: technical innovation, design, collaboration, and a chance to understand how business was conducted in the mid-20th century,” said Nicholas Biebuyck, Heritage Director at TAG Heuer. “America was the key market during the period and thanks to the friendship between Walter Haynes, President of Abercrombie & Fitch, and the Heuer family, not only did this great innovation come into the world, but it helped Heuer build its incredible reputation for timekeeping excellence in a region that would become vital to its future.

Given that it was a US retailer who launched the Seafarer originally, it made perfect sense to debut this piece with our great friends at Hodinkee for our limited edition together.”

a Carrera font inspired by the late reference’s characterful blocky type. The brands kept the feeling of the late Reference 2446C Seafarer but made a conscious decision to look to the future of TAG Heuer with the present-day TAG Heuer and Carrera logos at 12 o’clock.

Consistent with all models of the heritage Seafarer, the usual date window from the Carreras you see today was also removed, and the watch is fitted to a black textured rubber strap, making it fit for life at sea. This watch is truly the embodiment of everything to love about TAG Heuer - past and present.

“TAG Heuer is one of Hodinkee’s first partners, and we don’t take that lightly,” said Jeff Hilliard, Sr. Director of Limited Editions at Hodinkee. “For our third Limited Edition collaboration with them, we wanted to do something special. But when we asked them to bring back the tide complication, we figured it was a longshot, since we knew there would be significant research and development that was involved. To our surprise, they agreed to the concept, and we are super excited to bring a piece of TAG Heuer’s incredible history back to the forefront using the incredible glassbox chronograph.”

From Paris to Florida, Laetitia Laurent has incorporated her French flair with a modern twist into her family home.

Laetitia, please tell us a bit about yourself.

I’m Laetitia Laurent, Principal of Laure Nell Interiors. We are a boutique, luxury interior design firm with studios in Boca Raton and Paris. I’m originally from France, though I now call Boca Raton my home, but I frequently travel back to uncover unique finds for my clients. I love fashion, travel, and of course design. I studied design, art, and history in Paris, and earned my master’s degree in history

and international relations from the Sorbonne, and I speak fluent French.

Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path?

Growing up in France and spending time in College at the Sorbonne, I got to experience firsthand all the rich architectural and art history, which really inspired me.

Please tell us more about your home.

My home is a unique blend of renovation and new construction.

I purchased the property in 2019, primarily for its exceptional lot. It’s situated on a beautiful waterway that leads to the intracoastal and eventually the ocean. Unlike many waterfront properties in Florida,

this one also faces a serene nature preserve that doubles as an aviary sanctuary, offering stunning views, especially in the evenings when the birds return home. When I bought the house, it was originally a 1,400-square-foot, 2-bedroom, 2-bath bungalow. I renovated the bedrooms and bathrooms but chose to preserve that part of the home, although I did gut it down to the studs except for the bathrooms. This section, now the north wing of the house, retains its original ceilings and has been transformed into an office with a bathroom and an en-suite guest corridor. I added a pocket door, so guests have their own private space, separate from the rest of the house.

The new construction begins after that and features 10-foot ceilings.

room and kitchen that opens onto an outdoor pool patio, which is as large as the interior living room. The family area includes a cozy loft family room, a primary bedroom that feels like a boutique hotel suite with its integrated bed, nightstands, and pendants, and an ensuite steam shower bathroom. My children’s bedrooms and bathrooms are also in this area.

While the house is modern and streamlined, it’s filled with architectural details that add character, like the siding in the primary bedroom, wood slats that define the dining room, and floating stairs. We also designed a large outdoor lounge and pool area, which was important to me for entertaining and for my family to enjoy.

As for art, I’ve collected some interesting pieces, including a Lichtenstein painting in the dining room I purchased at an auction, a sculpture by Idan Zareski that my husband recently gifted me, a limited series cowboy print by Beau Simmons, and original artwork from my contributions on the board of the Boca Raton. I also have various artifacts from my travels, mainly in France, that round out the sense of personal collection in the house.

You are an interior designer. Did you opt to do your home’s own interior design?

I did. It was quite the undertaking, a real labor of love. Designing my own home was obviously a deeply personal experience. It allowed me to experiment and express my creative vision in a space that’s truly my own. Every room has been crafted with a great deal of intention.

How would you best describe your design style?

My design style weaves together elements from different eras, which is a distinctly French approach to design, while embracing a modern, relaxed aesthetic. I like to mix vintage and antique treasures with contemporary pieces, I think it creates the perfect dichotomy of the well-traveled and the fresh. Imagine a stunning piece of modern art displayed above an ornate vintage Haussmann fireplace. I like clean lines and a modern aesthetic, but I like to pair that with a sense of collection. My home really reflects this. We call the project ‘Modern With a Soul’ because I believe modern doesn’t have to be overly sterile. It can be elegant and at the same time be inviting and personal, comfortable and lived-in.

Where / what / who inspires your design style?

My design style is inspired by the rich history

and culture of France and the timeless elegance of European architecture. Specific styles I admire include the work of Jean Royère, Le Corbusier, and Pierre Jeanneret. Fashion inspires my designs also, and Christian Dior is a style icon for me.

How do you keep things fresh and new in terms of decorating?

I believe in keeping my spaces a bit fluid with a focus on flexibility. Things don’t have to be so static. For example, I love incorporating side tables that can be easily moved around or coffee tables that nest with ottomans underneath. This not only adds mobility and function to a space but also allows for easy updates and adjustments, ensuring things evolve with the needs of the moment. I also think this approach allows for things to be refreshed. You can always keep space to add a new treasure to your spaces or be open to moving things around.

Is there a specific color you are drawn to in interior design?

I’m particularly drawn to soft palettes - Chantilly Lace is always a favorite. I’m currently loving more feminine hues like rose as well.

But I also love incorporating rich, deep jewel tones – I especially love deep navy and emerald green.

Do you believe in repurposing?

Absolutely. I believe in the sustainability and the beauty of repurposing. Giving old pieces a new life adds character and history to a space.

It’s a way to honor craftsmanship and preserve the stories embedded in each piece. I think this speaks to the importance of investing in quality pieces. These higher quality items last forever and can be refurbished when needed whether it’s reupholstering a well-loved sofa or refinishing a classic table. It drives home both sustainability and a deeper connection with the items in your home. As my dad would always say, “You have to be really rich to buy cheap stuff.” This philosophy highlights the long-term value of choosing quality over quantity. This is another very French way of thinking.

Do you have any special heirloom pieces?

Yes, a few. My father’s side of the family were all diplomats stationed in the old colonies of France (Morocco, Tunisia, etc.). My paternal grandmother left me an antique, handmade middle eastern eye kohl applicator that is just very beautiful and special. I also have a collection of the first horse bits from our family’s

horses over the years, including from my first pony. And lots of old French classic books: Voltaire, Balzac, Dumas, Sartre.

Which part of your home is you favorite?

My favorite part of my home would have to be my walk-in wardrobe. I was able to build the closet of my dreams in this space. I love fashion … what girl doesn’t? Growing up in Paris, I went to countless fashion shows and now I finally get to display some of my collections.

It has a center island with lots of drawers and compartments to keep everything nice and organized. The same thing for accessories, shoes, and purses. Everything has a dedicated space.

It’s definitely my happy place.

In which part of your home do you spend the most time?

I spend the most time in the heart of my home, the kitchen. I do a great deal of cooking and entertaining, and we have guests over frequently. Plus, with three kids, I naturally spend a lot of time there. I picked cabinets that have slab doors, no hardware, and put lots of them in so that everything can get tucked away. The cabinets are a cashmere color, and I love the contrast with the countertops. I feel like it really helps ground the space and helps define the kitchen away from the living and dining room in a big open space. It’s a very inviting space and everyone ends up gathering around in there.

May I please ask who you share your home with? As an expert in your field, were / are you open to design suggestions from them, especially your children?

I share my home with my husband and our three children, my teenage son, preteen daughter, and toddler son. So, it’s busy! I value their input when it comes to our overall design, and I empower the older kids to contribute to designing their personal spaces. My older son loves art just like me and chose to display his collection of skateboards that he got on a trip we took to a little surf town in the South of France. My daughter is an avid equestrian (also like me) and has an impressive collection of her ribbons and medals displayed in her room. They are following suit with my sense of collection for sure. My husband is also an art lover and definitely weighs in. We’re building a collection from our travels. He actually gifted me a piece that’s prominently displayed in our dining room. It’s a sculpture called ‘Big Foot’

by Idan Zareski, an artist we discovered on our

first trip together to Cartagena, Colombia.

The piece is all about being grounded and having a space to live together … a place to call home. He gave it to me after we moved into this house, so it has very special meaning.

Do you have any designers that inspire you?

Yes, I’m inspired by a number of designers, both past and present. Icons like Jean-Michel Frank and Andrée Putman have greatly influenced my approach to design with their minimalist elegance and innovative use of materials. Contemporary designers like Axel Vervoordt also inspire me with their ability to blend modern and antique elements seamlessly.

space should tell a story - one that is unique, timeless, and filled with meaning. From the moment you walk into my home, there are reminders of who we are. In my foyer, there’s a piece of art you see right when you walk in of a man being celebrated on a coronation horse. As a house full of avid equestrians, it really resonated. As a full-service interior design firm, London Pierce Design is instrumental in creating extraordinary family homes. Upscale Living magazine spoke exclusively with Principal Designer Candice Quinn about what it takes to turns her clients’ visions into reality.

Candice, please tell us about yourself.

I grew up in a suburb in Salt Lake City, Utah in a home where real estate and design were common topics of conversation. My father had a deep passion for home design, and I recall him spending hours at a drafting table designing homes that he would later build for our family. My mother worked in real estate, and weekends were often spent visiting open houses and studying real estate. This environment fostered my early interest in real estate and design. While attending college, an opportunity for me presented itself. My mother was on maternity leave with my youngest brother and needed help with her business. I earned my real estate license at 18 years old and quickly made a mark in the industry. This early start reinforced my passion and laid a strong foundation for my career.

Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career path?

One significant influence in my youth that shaped my career path was my father’s admiration for Frank Lloyd Wright. One Christmas, he gave me a book about Wright’s work, which had a profound impact on me. I was captivated by Wright’s innovative designs and architectural philosophy. This fascination led me to study not only Wright but also other renowned architects and designers. The inspiration I drew from their work deeply influenced my interests and aspirations, ultimately guiding me towards my career.

You started your firm, London Pierce Design in 2015. What sparked the decision to launch your own firm?

In 2007, I made the decision to relocate to Scottsdale, AZ, with my two young boys. At that time, the real estate industry was struggling, which presented a unique opportunity for me. I decided to leverage this situation by launching my real estate firm, focusing on investment properties. I assisted investors with buying and selling homes for profit while handling all the design work for these properties. As I worked on these projects, I noticed a growing demand from prospective clients who wanted me to design their personal homes as well. The increasing interest and waiting lists for homes with my design work highlighted the desire for me to start the design firm. It became clear that my true enthusiasm 4

lay in the design aspect rather than the transactional side of real estate.

This realization inspired me to start my own design firm in 2015, which has proven to be a successful decision.

Wow, 10 years in 2025, what an incredible milestone! Congratulations! There must have been some interesting lessons along the way.

Please share a few if you don’t mind.

Yes, it is surreal that we are coming up on our 10 year mark. There have been many valuable lessons throughout my journey, from designing homes for investors to working on multi-million-dollar spec homes and client projects across the country. One of the most important lessons I’ve learned is that every problem has a solution. Maintaining a positive attitude and always having backup plans in place are crucial for navigating challenges. A particularly challenging period was during Covid.

We experienced a surge in demand for our services, which, combined with industrywide delays, put a significant strain on our operations. This period taught me the importance of flexibility and resilience. We had to adapt quickly, manage expectations, and find creative solutions to keep projects on track. It was a demanding time, but it reinforced the value of staying positive and being prepared to pivot when necessary. I often joke that interior design isn’t always as glamorous as it seems, though the shopping and creative processes are definitely highlights. A typical day in a full-service interior design firm is a blend of excitement, challenges, and hard work.

What does a day in the life of a full-service interior design firm entail?

My day usually begins early, as contractors and construction teams start their workday very early. I frequently conduct site visits to oversee the progress on various projects, ensuring that the design plans are being implemented as intended. These visits are crucial for addressing any issues that may arise and maintaining the integrity of the design. I spend a significant portion of the day collaborating with my team. This involves brainstorming and refining design concepts, selecting materials, and coordinating the details of each project. Working closely with my team ensures that every aspect of the design aligns with my vision. Meeting with clients is another key part of my day. Whether presenting design proposals, discussing revisions, or reviewing progress, these interactions are essential for keeping clients informed and engaged throughout the process. Managing projects from initial development through to final furniture installation involves juggling multiple tasks and timelines. This includes coordinating with contractors, handling logistical challenges, and ensuring that every detail is executed to perfection. While the pro-

cess can be demanding and requires meticulous attention to detail, the reward of seeing a completed project come to life and satisfying our clients makes it all worthwhile. Each day brings its own set of challenges and triumphs, making the work both fulfilling and dynamic.

How hands-on are you with each project?

I am highly hands-on with all projects, deeply involved in every phase of the design process.

From the initial design development, where I work closely on conceptualizing and planning, to conducting regular site check-ups and monitoring progress, I ensure that every detail aligns with my vision and requirements. I also take an active role in client meetings, where I discuss project updates, gather feedback, and make necessary adjustments to ensure client satisfaction. My involvement continues through to the final installation, where I oversee the implementation of design elements and ensure everything is executed to the highest standard. Being hands-on in every aspect allows me to maintain a strong connection with the project and ensure that each element is carefully managed, leading to successful and seamless outcomes.

What sets your firm apart from others?

What sets my firm apart is our approach to project selection and our unwavering commitment to delivering exceptional results. I am highly selective about the projects we take on, ensuring that each one receives the dedicated attention it deserves. This careful selection process allows us to focus our resources and expertise on projects where we can make the most impact, leading to successful and outstanding outcomes. With my background in investment real estate, I approach each project with the end result in mind. I understand that clients’ circumstances 4

can change, and they might need to sell or move unexpectedly, even if that wasn’t their initial plan. By designing with both aesthetics and property value in mind, we create spaces that are not only beautiful and functional but also strategically enhance the home’s market appeal. Intelligent design choices that improve livability, such as optimizing layouts and selecting timeless materials, can significantly boost a property’s resale value. This dual focus ensures that our designs not only meet current needs but also serve as a wise investment in a big asset.

You also said ‘my favorite projects are those that completely transform a space and have the opportunity to become something truly original’. Could you expand a bit on that quote please.

I thrive on challenges, and there’s a unique thrill in taking on renovation projects that involve reimagining an existing space. Whether a space is outdated, poorly designed, or in disrepair, the opportunity to reinvent it is where I find the most fulfillment. It’s incredibly rewarding to envision how a dated or dysfunctional space can be transformed into something spectacular. This process involves not just overcoming obstacles but also unleashing creativity to solve design problems and enhance functionality. For me, the joy comes from turning a challenging project into a showcase of innovation and transformation, ultimately creating a space that is both beautiful and functional.

The clean lines you seem to favor really create a wow-factor when it comes to interior design. Have you always been drawn to that or is it what is currently trending?

Clean lines have always been a key element of my signature style. I’ve been drawn to this aesthetic because I feel that it creates a sense of sophistication in any space. While clean lines may be a trend, my appreciation for them goes beyond any trends. That said, I don’t view clean lines as a one-dimensional approach. To create a truly inviting and dynamic space, I layer in texture and other elements. This combination adds warmth and depth, ensuring that the space feels both modern and inviting.

And the use of white and black – simply stunning. Is that a trademark for you?

I love that you noticed the use of black and white in my portfolio! This color palette is indeed a signature element of my design style. I

believe that black and white offer a timeless and elegant contrast that can dramatically enhance a space. The sharp interplay between these two colors creates a striking visual impact and adds a sense of sophistication. I also enjoy using this classic combination to introduce a bit of drama and intrigue into my designs. By leveraging the bold contrast of black and white, I can create dynamic, visually engaging environments while maintaining a sense of timelessness and refinement.

Exciting projects on the horizon?

Absolutely, we have several exciting projects underway! One that comes to mind is a small golf hotel in North Scottsdale. This project marks our expansion into the hospitality field, which has been both inspiring and fulfilling.

amed private members’ club, Home House in Marylebone, London is known for merging style, heritage, and design, presenting its members with a thoroughly British, eccentric and unique offering.

Nestled within the namesake 250-year-old Grade-I listed Georgian townhouse, expect the coming together of 18th-century splendor with 21st-century style. Home House opened in 1998 transforming the landscape of traditional members’ clubs as a haven for hedonism and escapism – and as a result, it has played host to many colorful characters and iconic moments over the years.

The architects behind the building, James Wyatt and Robert Adam were two of the most celebrated architects of their day, and the Grade-I listed building is acknowledged as Robert Adam’s finest surviving London town-

house. Home House became home to many famous personalities throughout the years, and the club’s 23 opulent bedrooms and suites are named after the house’s intriguing former residents, such as the Duke of Newcastle and Anthony Blunt.

The eminent Earl Grey tea gained popularity at Home House too, when Charles, 2nd Earl Grey occupied the property from 1812 – 1819 and Lady Grey used it to entertain the political establishment of the time.

Fast-forward to today and Home House is renowned for its legendary parties and its ‘no rules’ policy, providing members with freedom, and the 20,000 bottles of champagne consumed by members annually stand as a testament to the club’s lavish and epicurean atmosphere for its discerning members and guests. 

Claude, tell us a bit about yourself.

I was born in a small town called Richards Bay in the coastal South African province of KwaZulu-Natal and brought up for much of my life in post-civil war Mozambique. During this time, I was exposed to private charter flying as well as the still nostalgic days of airline flying – I’m a fully licensed commercial pilot. I swopped big jets for helicopters and these days, I enjoy taking flight in a Bell Long Ranger. I care for our staff as much as I hope they care for our dear clients. I love traveling, socializing and business development. In between managing a growing business, flying, looking after our beautiful baby boy Thomas, I restore vintage motorcycles in the few minutes available in the remainder of a day.

Has there been a substantial increase in private charter demand?

I wouldn’t say that the private charter has grown across the board. On the one hand we have seen an increase in luxury leisure travel charters and a decrease in business related travel.

Additionally, the shortage of aircraft in the general aviation industry has given rise to a perception that there is a lot of growth when it is actually just a big challenge in realizing demand with limited supply.

Why do you think that is?

Many aircraft owners and investors in the sector sold their assets during Covid and then sold even more post-Covid as the foreign markets brought South African assets up for what was considered inexpensive at the time. With a lot of work and reinvestment with interested stakeholders, we hope to be able to once again provide sufficient capacity to a returning travel market.

From fixed wing aircraft to helicopters – you tailor-make the perfect winged or rotor solution for your clients. Please talk us through that process.

Some clients want the most cost-effective A to B option while other clients want to live it up at 40000 ft. and enjoy a personalized 100-year-old cognac tasting. We try our best to know where the client sits on the pricing spectrum and match their expectations with the right aircraft and experience. Matching budget, experience and expectation is a constant challenge, but that’s what we do. It’s our responsibility to give our clients what they want.

‘To Africa and beyond’ – which are the popular leisure destinations?

The top requested leisure destinations are Hoedspruit and by flying there, guests can access the Greater Kruger region, Victoria Falls/Livingstone, because who doesn’t want to see the natural splendor of the ‘Smoke That Thunders’, Kenya to experience the Masai Mara, Maun which is the gateway to Botswana and the magnificent Okavango Delta, Mauritius for its pristine beaches and Vilanculos in Mozambique for island-hopping at its finest.

And for the business traveler?

We fly them to Cape Town, KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg, Polokwane, Windhoek and Harare.

You maintain lasting relationships with your clients, which I assume is the core of your business. Please explain.

Maintaining lasting relationships is vital in our industry, like many that rely heavily on great personal references. Most of our clients come to us via word of mouth and reference from friends, colleagues and family. As such, we take care of every one of our

clients with the dedication that is expected when someone else has vouched for your company. Our staff go out of their way to always go above and beyond to improve the clients’ experience. Every little thought, no matter how small, usually gets noticed.

We also network our clients where we can with other clients who may provide services/products etc that they are in need of. Good intention is everything.

How do you pride yourselves on ‘taking guests off the beaten path, giving you the most memorable experiences, and leaving you yearning for the next adventure’?

Bastion Aviation and Drive are more than a simple get in and go logistics company. We offer advice to our clients, many of which are DMCs (Destination Management Company) in giving their clients the best value for money experience, taking into consideration the costs and limitations of flying. Our knowledge of travel is shared with all our clients. Always finding and testing fantastic new locations and experiences … it’s only fair to share these with our clients.

What sparked the conceptualization of Bastion Drive?

Bastion Drive sprung out of a requirement to ensure the same Bastion level of service from door to door and to provide our clients with the same experience that they get on our jets. license, imagining a career in yacht design or living life on the water.

In the summer introductory design studio Jamie and I met. We frequently were found at each other’s desks talking through design problems and realizing what a good team we are, both in the design world and emotionally. We were ‘Maui’ed’ in our last semester of school.

A mutual love for design inspired husband-and-wife team Trip and Jamie Ivey to put their passion into their own design firm, Ivey Design Group.

Jamie & Trip tell us a bit about yourselves.

Jamie: I graduated with an engineering degree from Virginia Tech and began working as an IT management consultant in New York City.

It was there that I discovered interior design, and I was immediately hooked. It took another seven years to finally follow my new passion, and I went back to Virginia Tech to get my interior design degree.

Trip and I met at Virginia Tech’s College of Architecture summer studio, an intense session where architecture, industrial design, landscape architecture, and interior design students have a condensed ‘first year studio’ experience, before separating out into their respective majors. He was going into industrial design; I was going into interior design. It was the beginning of our mutual love of design, and where we got to be in our design ‘cocoon’, without any distractions. It was a great start to our relationship.

Trip: Born and raised in Northern Virginia, many of my childhood memories are based on frequent family boating trips on the Chesapeake Bay. I went to Virginia Tech first as a civil engineering major, however, after a couple of years I realized that an engineering career was not for me. While switching majors into industrial design, I obtained a captain’s 8 | UPSCALE LIVING MAGAZINE | SEPT/OCT 2024

Did you have an influence in your youth that shaped your career paths?

Jamie: I’ve lived in eight different states, in almost 20 different homes.

Yet, no matter how little of a time I’ve lived somewhere, I’ve always managed to make my spaces look and function the best they can. Whether that was rearranging my bedroom furniture and covering my walls with posters as a child, or doing DIY decorating for my many apartments as a young adult. It has clearly always been important to me to be surrounded by beauty.

Trip: Family boating had a big impact that shaped my career path. As an Eagle scout, I was exposed to many experiences, such as sailing, that allowed me to find interest in a variety of subjects and careers.

You started your firm, Ivey Design Group in 2015. Working together as a husband-and-wife team sounds like the ideal platform to discuss ideas and navigate through challenges. Is that always the case?

Trip: Jamie and I complement each other very well. Jamie has a very high level of taste, and while very creative, is also an incredible editor. This complements my rapid creative process in which many ideas are created.

Jamie is great at sorting the wheat from the chaff. That said, it is very easy for us to bring work home and discuss design endlessly.

Jamie: Trip and I work mostly separately on our respective projects, yet we still collaborate and discuss all our projects together. He has always helped me with space planning, as he’s very adept at solving the unique constraints of yachts. He has a much more technical job than mine, so I can’t help much there, but I do help him from time to time on layout ideas, client management, and material selections. Work definitely bleeds into home life.

How valuable is the involvement and feedback from your spouse?

Jamie: I’m a ‘talk to think’ person, so having someone take the time to listen to my design dilemmas and concerns really helps me in working through a solution. Since he’s not in the weeds of my projects, it helps to have his fresh perspective.

Trip: Immensely valuable. If Jamie becomes stuck on a design, I can help generate ideas. If I become distracted from ideas, or work on things that need extra refinement, Jamie is a great director.

You are an interior design firm. How did you end up doing yacht design, which is rather specialized?

Trip: Jamie and I moved to southern California after graduation, and I ended up working for a prestigious yacht design company in Newport Beach. There I was trained in the various aspects of high-performance yacht design, especially 3D modeling.

When we moved to Richmond, VA following the birth of our son, Ivey Design Group started as an industrial design company, while Jamie continued working as a hospitality designer.

While working as a consultant for various projects, I found a naval architect to work alongside for a variety of powerboat projects.

You worked on a few catamarans when you were employed at Morrelli & Melvin.

Trip: I landed my dream job when I began working for the Morrelli & Melvin design team. Right away I was brought into the world of the highest performance sailing catamarans.

One of the most exciting projects was developing a line of high performance cruising catamarans for HH Catamarans. The project began for me as an intensive 3 day design charette in Poland, quickly working to create an exterior style and basic arrangement for a completely custom sailing vessel. The enthusiasm for the concept was enough that I was tasked to help create a series of semi-custom yachts with similar exterior designs. It was such a treat to step on board after having looked at the boats for so long on the computer. They are a LOT bigger in person!

Jamie: Once I joined Ivey Design Group officially, we got a website and Instagram, where we were posting both of our works. However, I had clients asking why I was posting about a yacht helm right after I posted a kitchen image…the branding was muddled and confusing. As the interiors side of the business was growing, we realized we need to separate our websites and branding, even though we were the same company. He now has his own website www.tripivey.com, where he shares not only his yacht projects, but his furniture design, product design, and art.

Are you responsible for both interiors and exteriors?

Trip: I design boats from the inside-out, and outside-in, creating a high resolution 3D mod-

el. A lot of what I do is working with various naval architects, engineers, and builders to ensure a high functioning performance craft. I can then build a design model that meets the evolving criteria to suit the needs of every party, especially the owner.

What is the process involved in the designs?

Trip: The design process varies for each project depending on the owner and team but follows a basic outline. First, design criteria are laid out. We need to understand the expected use of the vessel, and what the client may want it to look like. While introductory engineering is occurring to ensure certain performance criteria can be met, I create a concept model that can show the rough general arrangement (floor plan) and exterior design. The design then follows a design spiral with constant refinement occurring with every loop, ensuring everything remains balanced. This is often happening concurrently with the phase of the build process.

The projects I work on are typically built using digital fabrication techniques.

Please tell us about Skinny Witch.

Trip: This was an incredible project to be a part of! The client had a very clear expectation of what the custom boat should be and an owner’s representative that was a great communicator.

The goal was a 55’ fishing boat that could go 55mph with a Chesapeake deadrise style. This speed necessitates the highest performance materials, and processes, working alongside some of the best engineers in the field, as well as the amazing naval architect Lou Codega. None of the meticulous design would have mattered without a builder that could match the detail provided. The builder, Composite Yachts executed the project to an incredibly high level!

Jamie: We use 3D models for all our interiors projects, and not just in the final presentation.

It helps us with scale, proportion, pattern and color, and helps us work through critical millwork details. By working and presenting in 3D in conjunction with physical samples, we help clients clearly visualize how their space will look and function, giving them the confidence to make decisions and move the process forward.

Exciting projects on the horizon?

Trip: The high-performance custom boat industry is doing quite well. I have a great team to work with and have a handful of exciting projects to try to keep up with!

Jamie: We’re working on a new construction home here in Richmond that has been so wonderful to work on. We have been involved from the very beginning, from space planning, interior finishes and millwork to furniture and décor, it’s going to be a stunner! We’re also working on a full renovation of a home in Telluride, and are wrapping up and photographing a few full home projects this fall. Have 3D models improved the design concept and if yes, in what way?

Trip: 3D models are paramount to my process.

The concept can be presented in 3D early, to help ‘sell’ the project to the client. The digital 3D design process allows very high tolerance fabrication, and the team can fully visualize each element of the boat before it is made. A Room with a View at the

FAIRMONT SAN FRANCISCO | BY TRACY ELLEN BEARD

Fairmont San Francisco, a five-star luxury hotel known for its grandeur and elegance for more than 100 years, overlooks the city at the top of Nob Hill. This neighborhood, once home to the Big Four railroad barons, maintains an ambiance of wealth and privilege. Some of the city’s most stylish hotels reside here, along with Gothic-style Grace Cathedral and Huntington Park. The 606 rooms and suites at Fairmont San Francisco offer guests unequaled service, lavish comfort, breathtaking views of the city and bay, unforgettable dining, and a peek into the iconic history of the city.

Hotel History

James Graham Fair, an Irish immigrant, arrived in California with thousands of others in hopes of finding gold in the 1800s. He did not find gold but made his fortune in the silver mines of Nevada. With his wealth and eventual political influence, he purchased land on top of Nob Hill, home to railroad tycoons Leland Stanford, Charles Crocker, and other wealthy individuals. He planned to build his dream estate but died in 1894, leaving his wealth to his two daughters, Tessie and Virginia. In 1903, the sisters decided to fulfill their father’s vision. They began construction on the magnificent hotel and used the family name (Fair) in combination with (Mont) representing the hill on which it was to be built to create the iconic flagship Fairmont San Francisco hotel.

The hotel’s opening, scheduled for April 18, 1906, was disrupted by the massive 7.9 earthquake that struck the city of San Francisco. The Great Quake toppled thousands of buildings, and yet the Fairmont San Francisco miraculously survived only to have the interior brutally burned by fires 24 hours later.

Never wavering, the sisters quickly hired Julia Morgan, California’s first female licensed architect, to restore the hotel and “re-open” it within one year. Fairmont San Francisco became the city’s first significant business to open following the quake. Due to time constraints, all but one of the stunning imported marble columns in the lobby, which were original to the hotel, were replaced with wooden columns with faux sheeting resembling marble. Over 25,000 6

barrels of gold and cement were used to rebuild the hotel, which opened exactly one year later on April 18, 1907.

Rooms and Suites

The 606 well-appointed rooms and suites offer first-rate amenities, including plush linens, current technology, and spectacular marble bathrooms. Many rooms and suites boast panoramic views of the city or the bay. During my recent visit, my husband Steve and I stayed in a Tower Suite on the 15th floor and savored our morning coffee each day while gazing out at the boats in the bay and watching the early morning stirrings of city life below.

The First United Nations Conference For more than a century, Fairmont San Francisco has served as a gathering place for influential individuals, world leaders, and celebrities. The Penthouse is known as the place where the United Nations charter was drafted. Although the charter was signed at the War Memorial Opera House, the participants gathered in the Penthouse in 1945 to draft it. The United Nations Flags in the front of the hotel tie into this bit of history.

The Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar

The plunge pool, built in 1929, was the first indoor swimming pool in the United States and was the original Tonga Room. Famous Olympians, Ronald Reagan, and other celebrities were some of the first to swim in the pool. In 1945, MGM was hired to restore the space and created the Tonga Room & Hurricane Bar. Visitors are continuously enthralled by the thatched hut and towering ship masts that decorate the restaurant/ bar, which surrounds a glowing lagoon that features scheduled indoor thunder and rainstorms around its perimeter.

During our stay, Steve and I enjoyed a delicious Asian-inspired dinner representative of the tiki culture. We began our dinner with a delightful pu pu platter comprised of tasty appetizers while sipping on fruity cocktails and listening to the band that plays several nights a week on the boat f loating in the lagoon.

The Venetian Room

From the 1940s to the 1970s, Fairmont San Francisco’s dazzling Venetian Room was the place to see and be seen. The in-house orchestra, impeccably dressed staff, and romantic ambiance regularly brought in the Who’s Who of that time period. In 1961, Tony Bennett debuted his newest song, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco.”

Francisco formed a special bond.

In 2016, the hotel management hosted Bennett’s 90th birthday. During the celebration, the staff unveiled an 8-foot-tall bronze replica of the singer, which stands in front of the hotel. Because Bennett frequented the hotel regularly during his years of fame, a suite is named in his honor, which guests can enjoy today.

Laurel Court Restaurant & Bar

In the 1940s, visitors to Fairmont San Francisco sipped on cocktails while riding the carousel located in the Laurel Court Restaurant & Bar. Although the carousel is no longer in the restaurant, diners can enjoy breakfast, lunch, and dinner in this upscale restaurant that serves an abundant array of ingredients available in the Bay Area. The room, decorated with a stunning domed ceiling, marble columns, and striking murals, is all reminiscent of the Gilded Age. The tunes played on the grand piano elevate the dining experience.

Other Fabulous Spaces at Fairmont San Francisco

The Cirque Bar coffee shop opened in 2024 but

was originally a bar. It was the first bar to open west of Mississippi after prohibition. Today, it is an excellent place to pick up a pastry and coffee if you plan to be out and about in the city for the day.

Steve and I thoroughly enjoyed spending time on the rooftop garden, where we sipped wine and discussed the day’s adventures.

The bee garden is part of the hotel’s sustainability project, and the culinary team uses the honey in the hotel restaurants and at catered events.

Things to Do in the Area

The steep streets in this part of the city will give guests a great workout, and there are several places to stop for a drink or a bite to eat. The Top of the Mark lounge is an exciting nightspot with a 360-degree view, and the Cable Car Museum showcases antique cars alongside live machinery and a plethora of history. The Ferry Building and Palace of Fine Arts are close, and Chinatown is a reasonable walk from the hotel, making it a tasty destination to stop for lunch.

Other exciting places to visit include the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, which is one of the largest museums of modern and contem-

porary art in the United States and not only discovers artists from around the world but houses many new and sensational collections throughout the year. Steve and I viewed a new exhibit

by Creative Growth. This exhibition celebrated the fiftieth anniversary of the first organization in the US dedicated to supporting artists with developmental disabilities. The artwork was astounding, and meeting many of the artists and hearing their stories was a pleasure.

A visit to the de Young/Legion of Honor Museums, which houses an array of collections, including American and African art, and a walk across the iconic Golden Gate Bridge are both worthwhile activities.

Fairmont San Francisco is part of the San Francisco story and the perfect place to lay your head at night. Paris’s original palace hotel has just had a makeover, and its new collection of individually designed rooms and suites is a masterful blend of modern comfort and classical elegance.

O

h, if these walls could talk. In 1935, Le Meurice opened so that discerning travelers from the British upper classes could find the comforts of high society in Paris’s historic center, and in the two centuries since, it’s rightfully earned its reputation as L’Hôtel des Rois (The Hotel of Kings). This glorious grand dame - the first hotel in Paris to receive ‘palace’ status - has seen its guestbook signed by countless visitors of bona fide and celebrity royalty, from England’s Queen Victoria to Beyonce “Queen Bey” Knowles. But Le Meurice is perhaps even better known as a favorite haunt for boundary-pushing artists from Paris’s golden eras: Picasso was married here in 1918, and Salvador Dalí (and his pet ocelots) took up residence in the Presidential Suite for a month every year, for more than three decades.

Le Meurice’s legacy as Paris’s spiritual home for artists and thinkers lives on in its décor. Make no mistake: you’ll immediately get a sense of 18th-century elegance when you step into the lobby, courtesy of the hotel’s gilded portraits, marble tops, and glittering chandeliers. But notice also the frosted mirror: a blank canvas that summons the playful spirit of Dalí by inviting guests to scribble and sprawl upon it with their fingertips. Then there’s the double-seated chair, influenced by Dalí’s penchant for what he liked to call “conversation pieces”, and the intertwining Greek-style pillars that might have been lifted straight out of a surrealist painting.

The opulence continues into the recently renovated rooms and suites. Since 2019, designers Charles Jouffre, Margaux Lally, and Luc Berger have worked alongside French artisans to ensure that each newly enhanced room has been decorated with a uniquely personal touch. The result is an artful blend of modern comfort and exclusive craftsmanship, exhibited in the light-rich rooms’ hand-drawn wallpapers, stone marquetry, and lavish textiles. The curtains, for example, crafted from voided velvets and gold-and-silver-brocaded silk, come from a family-owned manufacturer that’s been in the luxury fabrics business since the 18th century. Meanwhile, upholstery accents from Declercq Passementerie evoke timeless, Versailles-style sophistication without overstepping into gaudy territory.

The crowning glory of Le Meurice’s masterful renovation project is undoubtedly the rooftop Belle Etoile Penthouse Suite. This four-bedroom suite is flooded with natural light, bringing a warm glow to its dappled color palette of creams, golds, and bronzes. Rich trimmings include original artworks and shimmering fabrics, while the

magnificent bathroom is ensconced from floor to ceiling in gleaming marble. Even the wraparound terrace, where landscape designer Pierre Alexandre Risser’s original design emulates the Tuileries Gardens across the road, has been treated to a touch-up.

From here unfurls a sweeping 360-degree panorama of Paris. Many of the city’s most famous landmarks can be enjoyed all at once, from the Eiffel Tower to Montmartre’s Sacré Coeur. It’s a reminder that Le Meurice on the Rue de Rivoli occupies one of the primest real estate spots in Paris: just a short walk through the sculpture-adorned Tuileries is arguably Europe’s most famous gallery, the Louvre, while the luxury boutiques of Rue Saint-Honoré and Place Vendôme are dangerously close at hand.

Le Meurice is more than just a feast for the eyes: diners are spoilt for choice here too. Firstly, there’s the two Michelin-starred Restaurant Le Meurice Alain Ducasse, where Executive Chef Amaury Bouhours’s classical menu based around simple ingredients is served in a luxurious, rococo-style dining hall modeled on the grand Salon de la Paix at the Château de Versailles. Guests at the hotel can take breakfast here too, beneath giant chandeliers dripping with crystals. The restaurant’s renovation was overseen by avante-garde designer Philippe Starck. He’s added a few modern flourishes while retaining the space’s palatial character, but it’s obvious he had a little more fun with the hotel’s second restaurant.

Restaurant Le Dalí is named after, and inspired by, the hotel’s most celebrated and most eccentric former resident. The decor features Dalí-esque touches, including a leaning mirror, oversized armchairs pulled up to the dining tables, and a dreamlike painting on the ceiling by Philippe’s artist daughter, Ara Starck. Le Dalí’s menu is constantly rotating, based on the seasonal ingredients available from local French producers, but the main draw might be the desserts: esteemed pâtissier Cédric Grolet’s ‘sculpted fruits’ have earned him the title of world’s best pastry chef several times over.

Like the many artists who’ve passed through Le Meurice’s doors - and the ones who’ve had a hand in shaping its design - Grolet is a master of his craft.

This luxurious spa spans over 7,000 square meters and offers an extensive range of wellness treatments. The thermal pool itself is a stunning feature, with its warm, mineral-rich waters providing therapeutic benefits. Surrounded by elegant loungers and lush greenery, the pool area is a perfect place to unwind. The steady flow of guests taking advantage of the facility was proof of the restorative effect it offers. It is a destination within itself.

In addition to the thermal pool, the spa offers a variety of other facilities, including a sauna, steam room, and hot tub. Guests can indulge in a range of treatments, such as the La Prairie Caviar Instant Lifting treatment or the Maxi-mineral exfoliation wrap and massage, all performed by highly trained therapists using premium products. T

here are few things in the world that can rival the magnificence of the Okavango Delta. Departing Cape Town International Airport on a Monday morning with Airlink, Southern Africa’s most reliable and punctual airline, the Embraer ERJ-140 touches down at Maun International Airport just twoand-a-half hours later. Standing at the counter to have my passport stamped by a friendly immigration official, it’s heartwarming how enthused visitors to this beautiful country are to return or embark on their first trip to take in the splendor that is Botswana. Once through customs, I am met on the other side by a welcoming representative from Mack Air, who ushers me to the check-in counter where my luggage gets tagged for my internal flight to my destination, the stunning Kiri Camp!

I can hardly contain my excitement as this is my second time staying at a Machaba Safaris lodge, having sojourned at their Gomoti Plains Camp in 2018. Landing at the Kiri airstrip, I am collected by lodge manager Kobus and my guide for the duration of my glorious three-night-stay, Nthobatsang, better known as Tops. The drive to the lodge takes only six minutes, depending on what wildlife might make an appearance along the way. Welcomed with song and dance by some of the staff, I feel immediately at home and as I exit the game drive vehicle, a herd of elephants passes by the front of the lodge to drink from the nearby watering hole.

My domicile is Tented Suite no 6, which has astounding views over the floodplains from my private veranda. With only ten suites and a maximum of 24 guests when the lodge is full, the overwhelming feeling of peace and tranquility is very real when staying at Kiri Camp. The striking suites were constructed

by Lisa Rorich Architects, with the ingenious use of canvas for the tented portion of the structure, and reclaimed railway sleeper timber implemented for the floors. Reed ceilings were assembled by a rural woman’s group who collect and strip the reeds to achieve the pale color, which meld perfectly with the hue of the luna wood timber walls, keeping in line with

the sustainability that the Machaba Safaris properties are renowned for.

The glorious interiors were the handiwork of Interdeco, headed up by Andrew Irving and Mario Rodrigues. Tasked to fashion a camp with comfort, style and classic contemporary twists, they achieved that with great aplomb.

Taking their cues from the surrounding wilderness, grass tones were used that are the same shade as the plains, intertwined with earthy tinges of terracotta and black.

Realizing their incredible capabilities, Machaba Safaris has called upon the same architecture and interior design team for all their lodges.

“When conceptualizing a new property, we go to the site, put up a fly camp and spend a few days designing and imagining the lodge around a campfire, with a wonderful chef cooking on an open fire under the trees,” Lisa tells me. “This is possibly the secret of Machaba.”

Andrew echoes her sentiments. “We work with an amazing team. It’s give and take, and everything just gets done as we all have one purpose in mind – to create a camp that is ready for the Machaba Safaris clients to enjoy.”

Walking from my resplendent suite to the main area where High Tea is being served, there

are large footprints along the sandy pathway, a sign that elephants have passed through camp on the way to or from the watering hole. It is a magical sight to see these gentle giants up close or from a distance, taking in the life-giving sustenance of water. Leaving for our afternoon game drive, Tops goes in search of the wildlife that inhabit Kiri Camp’s private concession.

His favorite animal is an impala, and he lovingly refers to them as his ‘bush flowers’.

Twice daily game drives never disappoint, and highlights include a shy male leopard in a sausage tree, a pride of lions next to the Boro Channel, a family of bat-eared foxes and a pack of African Wild Dogs.

The suites have everything a guest at Kiri Camp can hope to have on safari, and so much more. Imagine a king-sized bed, different seating areas, an indoor and outdoor shower, double vanities and a freestanding outside bath.

Creature comforts come in the form of the softest bedding, fluffy towels and a Nespresso machine with a milk frother! It has been an outstanding adventure and as I say goodbye to the hospitable staff, I promise to return one day to create more lasting memories, the Machaba Safaris way.

Dinner at Acquerello, a two-star Michelin restaurant and a Wine Spectator Grand Award winner from 2012 to 2023, is not just a meal; it’s an exclusive event. Nestled in the prestigious San Francisco Nob Hill neighborhood, Acquerello has been a bastion of upscale gourmet classic and contemporary Italian cuisine and fine wines for over 30 years. Owned and operated by Giancarlo Paterlini and Executive Chef Suzette Gresham, the restaurant offers three distinct dining options: a Seasonal Tasting Menu, a Tasting of Vegetables, and a Prix Fixe Menu, each promising a unique and unforgettable experience.

Executive Chef Suzette Gresham Although Chef Suzette has all the credibility imaginable for a Michelin-star chef, when it comes to publicity, she tends to fly under the radar. Her long-term career began when it was uncommon for women to lead in restaurant kitchens.

Through perseverance, culinary excellence, and thick skin, Chef Suzette has made a name for herself in her hometown of San Francisco and in the culinary arena.

Wines at Acquerello

Rich in Italian wines, primarily ones from Piemonte, the staff at Acquerello has spent over 25 years developing the restaurant’s extensive wine list. In addition to Italian wines, the list includes a wide selection of the best wines from California and Champagne. Although the list is already comprehensive, the owners at Acquerello are always in search of new and exciting wines to add to their collection.

Ordering a bottle of wine to complement dinner is a fabulous idea.

However, giving the sommelier the freedom to pair different wines with one of their tasting menus is the best way to experience unique and tasty wines from the restaurant’s collection.

Dinner at Acquerello

During a recent trip to San Francisco, my husband Steve and I had the privilege of experiencing the Seasonal Tasting Menu paired with wines at Acquerello. The evening was made even more special by the dedicated team at Acquerello. Franco, one of the original Maître ds, Head Sommelier Rafael Santos, and Executive Chef Gresham, all took the time to present and describe each wine and dish, enhancing our culinary journey. The stylish and elegantly decorated restaurant added to the divine culinary experience, making us feel truly appreciated as guests.

The nine-course Seasonal Tasting Menu with two additional options was exquisite. We began the dinner with the chef ’s surprises for the evening and a glass of Grosjean, Vino Spumante di Qualita Metodo Classico Blanc Noir Extra Brut’ Mas du Jario’ NV. This delicious glass of Brut, made using the traditional champagne method Metedo Classico, was produced near the Alps.

The bubbles showcased heavy citrus notes that paired deliciously with the trio of amuse-bouches: Crispy Potato Cannoli filled with a Parmesan mousse with pearls of truffle on top and a sprinkling of gold, warm and savory Financier Cakes stuffed with caramelized onion, and a piece of Comté cheese on the top and then dusted with

chive powder and finished with alyssum flowers and pickled mushroom.

The third and final treat was Porcini Bashirs, which is a little puff pastry filled with porcini cream, Parmesan, and black trumpet mushroom powder. My favorite was the cannolo, boasting a strong Parmesan flavor, creamy on the inside, and a terrific crunch from the cannolo.

The first official course, Spanish Mackerel Crudo, presented with confit Buddha’s hand inside the pickled radish salad dressed in yuzu and finger lime, exhibited a nicely balanced array of textures. The dish delivered a wonderful crunch from the veggies, notes of acidity from the yuzu, and a fresh and clean taste from the sea from the mackerel. This course paired perfectly with the Köfererhof, Alto Adige Valle Isarco Sylvaner ‘R’ 2021 from Italy. I found that the wine offered soft floral notes reminiscent of rose petals. It was medium-balanced, not too acidic, and brought out the sweetness of the mackerel. The wine was light and refreshing but had some weight and texture.

Steve and I opted for the supplemental dish of Royal Kaluga Caviar with a bavaresa (Bavarian cream) of smoked eel along with little eel segments, a fried potato nest, and pickled beet, paired with Alois, Pallagrello Bianco. The caviar was spectacular; it was my favorite course of the night.

Chef Suzette enjoys serving caviar in unique and ingenious ways. The richness and smokiness of the bavaresa contrasted fabulously with the salty, briny caviar, and the relatively unknown heritage grape Pallagrello Bianco has a tiny bit of smokiness and texture with a saline finish to magically pair with the caviar.

All the courses were exceptional, but I am a harsh grader. The caviar received a score of ten in my book, and so did the Ridged Pasta with Faux “Foie Gras,” with black truffle and Marsala served with a Maculan, Breganze ‘Torcolato’ 2020, which is a dessert wine. This 30+-year-old dish is the chef ’s signature pasta dish, and the wine choice has been the pasta’s partner for over 20 years. This pairing is

the quintessential Acquerello experience that brings people back year after year. Movie buffs will understand my reference when I say that this combination is a “When Harry Met Sally” moment, as a low moan follows each bite.

I could have stopped and been entirely content after the pasta dish.

Still, we pressed on and continued by enjoying the Wild Texas Venison loin served over crispy leaves of cabbage set atop a cabbage puree and layers of portobello mushrooms and salsify, along with numerous sweet treats that capped off our decadent Italian dinner.

Acquerello continues to be one of San Francisco’s top dining establishments. After 30 years and two Michelin stars, local and visiting diners delight in the restaurant’s elegant ambiance and Chef Suzette’s classic and innovative cuisine.
