ar removed from the bright lights of her Hollywood stardom, Catherine Zeta-Jones is happiest at home, with her husband of 20 years, their two children, and adorable dogs while sporting a pair of her stylish Butterfly Twists. Upscale Living magazine asked her about her venture Caza Zeta-Jones and living her best life at the age of 51.

Catherine, you were born in Swansea, Wales. What are your fondest memories of your formative years?

We were and are a very tight knit family. I remember dinners every night at the dining room table where we would talk about what happened during the day. We are all musical in my family, so we would sing every chance we had at family parties or during the holidays.

You and Michael (Douglas) celebrate 20 years of wedded bliss in November 2020.

Congratulations! What is your secret to the longevity of your marriage?

Thank you, we’re very excited about this milestone in our marriage. Always be kind and respectful to one another. Keep a good sense of humor, make each other laugh. Separate bathrooms are a must!

Your children, Dylan and Carys seem to

not only have inherited your and Michael’s amazing genes but are individuals any parent can be proud of. What are the most important lessons you have taught them to be well-rounded members of society?

We are big on manners in our house. There are no phones at the table. Please and thank you always. It starts there. Be interested in other people and ask questions about them and what they are doing. The more you know about others the more well-rounded you are. No procrastinating; if you say you’ll do something do it. My children are truly great citizens of the world.

Your four-legged children are so cute! How is Taylor Douglas adapting to being the youngest member of the family?

Taylor has brought so much joy to our home, it’s amazing. We’ve always had dogs and they are members of our family. He’s mischievous but so sweet. We adore him!

You seem to enjoy traveling. Which destinations have left a lasting impression?

Our trip to Israel was truly a life-changing experience. And we have fallen in love with India and have now gone three times.

And then COVID-19 struck in 2020. How have you dealt with the pandemic and

keeping everyone safe and healthy?

We follow the protocols of what doctors and scientists say about staying safe. We watch the news but not so much so that it overwhelms us. Exercise, fresh air, and eating healthy.

How do you stay in such incredible shape?

Exercise, fresh air and, eating healthy! I mix up my exercise routine with swimming, the treadmill, dancing, lightweights. I start the day with yogurt or oatmeal and fresh berries.

I love fish and salad. Eating right and staying active has always been part of my lifestyle.

Do you have a sweet tooth?

Yes! I love savory salty foods, but a piece of chocolate cake, I don’t think I’d ever say no to that.

You have the most beautiful skin. What is your skincare routine?

I drink loads of water. Hydration does great things for your skin from the inside out. I also make sure to take all my makeup off every night. I moisturize and do a mask every week or so.

When did you start your Casa Zeta-Jones brand and why?

I started it about two years ago. I have always

loved home decorating. My friends would say, “Can you please come over? What can I do with this room?” If I hadn’t gone into acting, I would have been an interior designer for sure.

You have expanded into footwear. What was behind the idea for your beautiful Butterfly Twist shoes, of which the collection is entirely vegan?

Yes, after my homewares line, I wanted to expand into apparel. So why not start with the feet? I was introduced to Butterfly Twists when I was at the airport and developed a blister, so I bought a pair at their shop and I was SOLD! Comfortable and beautiful and perfect for navigating an airport or long walks through town. I knew they would be great partners to execute my ideas. And the shoes are great on the cobblestoned streets of Europe.

Do you have favorite pairs for specific occasions casual, dressing up, glamorous events, etc?

I do. I love shoes and have all types. In my everyday life, I spend most of my time in flats, but a beautiful sky-high heel is essential for a red carpet. I have some shoes that I think are too beautiful to wear so I keep them on display and use them as bookends.

Tell us about your make-up brand.

I’m obsessed with makeup. Love everything about it, always have. I wanted to first create a mascara and eyeliner that would accentuate the eyes. I wanted it to be easy to work with and stay in place. Little did I know how important that would be with everyone wearing masks, all we see right now are the eyes.

Are there exciting projects on the horizon for you?

Right now, with everything going on things are on hold but I am working on a few things. I have more coming out from Casa Zeta-Jones which I’m very excited about so stand by!  https://casazetajones.com/

C.P. Drewett Designing architecture that embraces the future

A

career in architecture seemed inevitable for a young C.P. Drewett, having been taught by his father the finer art of carpentry. Instrumental in the design of a $6 million architectural masterpiece that boasts technology in every space, he spoke exclusively to Upscale Living magazine about what it entails to create a dream space in Paradise Valley, Arizona.

Tell us a bit about yourself (schooling, formative years, studying, etc.)

I believe if you didn’t become an architect, you would have been a chef?

I think about that on occasion. I would say that I may have been able to make it through culinary school, but I don’t think I could truly live the lifestyle of a chef in the kitchen every day. I definitely think I would find great interest in being a restauranteur and having control over menu creation and dabbling around in the kitchen with another chef who could respect my foodie disposition.

My father was a U.S. Marine Corps aviator, which meant we frequently moved when growing up. My parents hopped on the fix-and-flip bandwagon very early on.

They would buy the worst houses in the best neighborhoods because that’s what they were able to afford on a military salary. Then we, as a family, would perform extensive renovations on each home. My father taught me at a very young age how to build cabinets and furniture, and that’s why, from childhood, I became predestined for a career in design.

What is your favorite dish to make, and why?

I went to school at Louisiana State University, where I earned my Bachelor of Architecture degree. Additionally, I spent 14 years in the U.S. Army National Guard as a branched Engineer. I did a tremendous amount of construction administration, which has supported my career with both experience and knowledge and has rounded me out as the architect I am today.

Your extroverted personality is probably advantageous in your line of work?

I like cooking fish, although it’s challenging to cook it perfectly. But my favorite thing to cook is Thanksgiving dinner. Growing up, my dad and I would brine the turkeys the night before. He would wake me early on Thanksgiving morning, we would build a fire, and then we would begin smoking the turkeys. It is a tradition that I now carry on with my son. I’m better at it than my dad, and I feel like I make the world’s greatest turkey!

I have been known to come across as an extrovert, but sometimes I run out of fuel and need to retreat to reenergize. Being an extrovert of sorts has definitely helped me build my career. I feel like I’m in a service industry,

although many other architects don’t agree with that perspective. I’m here to serve my client, and they never feel like strangers to me, not even at the beginning of our relationship. The use of humor, humility, and kind words really helps break down the walls with a new client so that I can get to know them and their preferences on a more personal level.

You designed the stunning ICONIC HAUS in Paradise Valley, Arizona. Please talk us through the project.

I’ve been going through a white box study during the last seven years, and this is my fourth in that series. It takes a great amount of discipline to be that restrained. On this particular project, I took notes of inspira-

tion from Luis Barragan’s work. I’ve wanted to do this styling of a home almost my whole career… simplistic, austere, a singular note yet open and dynamic. The house is built on a series of clustered pavilions that are connected with a wood bridge and glass circulation space.

ful detail rather than just a plate stuck on a wall. Technology should be considered from the beginning of the design, not as an afterthought. Crestron has been great to work with because their products are built for the future of the home, and they can become beautiful details in modern homes.

One of the things that architects need to do in this day and age is to truly integrate technology into our designs. I embrace technology and spend a great amount of time with our partners in the audio/video industry, learning and experiencing their lineup of products. I don’t want to hide technology but rather implement it logically while keeping it front and center so that it’s easier to use and navigate. I want it to be designed into the structure of the home, as a beauti-

Integrating technology into design takes great coordination, forethought, and a true understanding of how we live with technology. It’s a very intricate process. Over the years, I’ve had open and candid conversations with Crestron regarding what could be

improved in their product lineup.

What they’ve brought to the market within the last year is remarkably more elegant and tangential to modern architecture. They are always working to improve their portfolio, and there is no complacency with their product line.

What was it like to work with 19 design teams?

Renee Dee, the publisher of ICONIC LIFE and the brains behind the ICONIC HAUS project, was kind enough to coordinate a kick-off event with all the participating designers at my design studio. I was able to convey where the design concept came from

and what was important to me. I reflected on past showcase homes I’ve been a part of. These types of events are a great opportunity for designers to make a big splash, but I asked them to practice restraint and respond to the architecture when developing their design vision. It was a great turnout.

We have a wonderful design community in Phoenix, filled with talent and mutual respect. Of course, there’s always competition, but everyone played well in the sandbox together for this project. Renee’s direction and unique capacity to assemble this kind of event deserve all the credit for success.

I see you’ve traveled for work and hopefully, for pleasure too. Which places have left a lasting impression, and why?

Modern Day Renaissance Man?

Any exciting projects on the horizon?

I put aside classic male biases. I hunt. I fish.

I sing. I cook. I design. I learn and develop as many different traits as possible.

The Riviera at Lake Havasu is a marina project I’m currently working on. Years ago, the town was known for its raucous Spring Break crowds, but they also have a huge boating community, majestic mountains, a massive and stunning lake, and London Bridge, too. Crestron will be providing a concierge service to all the residents for whom I’m designing homes at The Riviera. It’s a really exciting development and will probably provide us with ten years of work.

What does C.P. stand for?

Clyde Patrick. I’m actually Clyde Patrick Drewett, Jr., named for my father, who was the senior and went by the name Pat. My parents opted to call me C.P. We jokingly make up lots of names for C.P. within my family and group of close friends. When I had babies at home, a good friend gave me the moniker “Changing Pampers,” and my wife affectionately says it stands for “Cool Person.”

Loreto, Mexico, left a lasting impression on me. I really did not know what to expect when I traveled there. I researched on the history of the city but not the geological landforms before to my visit. I was dumbfounded by the land’s beauty and the proliferation of sea life. It was the first time I had been to a smaller city in Mexico. The pride of ownership and the civic nature of the residents was beyond charming.

MASERATI MC20 Back to the roots | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

A Maserati is always envisioned as a graceful GT sports car slicing through Italian roads and being touted as the ‘cooler cousin’ to a Ferrari. However despite having a rich history, an enviable catalogue of great cars or even possessing a flair which is hard to match for any car-maker, Maserati has never quite gotten out of the shadows of Ferrari. Its latest product range has stylish but somewhat flawed cars and while something like a Levante SUV fills up the coffers, a brand like Maserati needs a halo car and its sports car lineup was getting aged to say the least. A Maserati should be more than just a pair of diesel luxury saloons or SUVs and a bona-fide supercar was something which was lacking in the line-up. Yes, we saw various gorgeous concept cars but now finally something has come up to bring cheer to all and also answer critics who were busy writing an epitaph for this Italian luxury car-maker.

Thing is, Maserati has had a troubled past with the brand changing hands numerous times and it needed a firm hand to guide it in these uncertain times. Enter the new ‘Stellantis’ merger between heavyweights FCA and the PSA group where Maserati is going to be finally the center of attention. Thus getting out of the clutches of Ferrari (Ferrari will still supply engines to Maserati till some more time before it is stopped) has helped Maserati see aspirations to take on McLaren and Porsche successfully. And no other car is a better show of intent than a brand new sports car. The MC20 is really brand new and by that we mean there are no Ferrari finger prints on it. It is the start of a new chapter at Maserati with a new

The wheels are pushed to the edges while the tail-lamps mimic the supercars of yore. The design is simple yet beautiful with a bit more of emotion smeared all over it. The butterfly doors for example add the necessary supercar drama while inside it is a culture shock for many since it’s is a driver focused cabin and not the typical Maserati interior.

There are two 10inch screens and the steering wheel or even the center console is not littered with buttons since having a minimalistic driver focused environment was always the agenda. That said there is leather and carbon fiber while it has

In other words it is not the slightly flaky Italian old-school cars that we have seen from Maserati. This is all new and you can see the seriousness right from the all carbon fiber body. It is light at just 1500 kgs, while carbon fiber and composites have also helped Maserati nail the slippery but very stylish shape. It has elements of the MC12 hyper-car which Maserati made years ago but the design is fresh yet emotive to the extent that you know it is a Maserati without checking out the badge on the grille.

a 6-speaker audio system along with the gadgets that you would need. It even forgoes a traditional rear view mirror for a digital one!

The heart of the matter though is the engine. In the MC20 there is no traditional V8 poking out as in place is a 3-liter, 6-cylinder twin-turbo engine called as “Nettuno”. It is brand new and made by Maserati with F1 technology in it. At 630 bhp it is currently the most powerful 6-cylinder motor in the world.

Performance numbers are savage with a 0 to 100 km/h time in less than 2.9 seconds and a 325 km/h.

The gearbox is an 8-speed dual clutch. There are 4 driving modes while the suspension is also adjustable.

For those disappointed that there is no form of hybridization, fret not as there is an all electric version planned right after this along with a convertible too.

This seems a like well planned and executed move.

The MC20 then on paper at-least signals the starting of a bright new future for Maserati and it is bursting at the seams with its ambition and enthusiasm. The MC20 looks desirable with the right mix of modern day technology and having the right design language befitting a Maserati. It borrows from the past but along with taking what is needed from the present. This quite possibly the most desirable and important car, Maserati has ever made and this is no hyperbole. It is a bold intent and while taking aim at Ferrari, Porsche, Mclaren and Lamborghini is indeed ambitious, the MC20 has what it takes to stand out in this cut-throat supercar market. This time, Maserati is serious.

Why Robert Downey Jr has the coolest BMW in the World | BY SOMNATH CHATTERJEE

R

obert Downey Jr. is a closet car enthusiast with a tasteful collection of cars. Of course most would associate him with the Audi R8 for obvious reasons; his automotive interests though go beyond that. His latest addition has in-fact made the automotive world sit up and take notice. No it is not some green Lamborghini or anything like that. It is a custom made BMW 1974 3.0 CS- which speaks volumes about the man and his taste. While he has modern sports cars and luxury cars like any celebrity big-shot, he also has a penchant for classic cars.

On its own the 3.0 CS “E9” is one of the most cherished collectible classic BMW due to its gorgeous styling and charm. First appearing with a 2.8 litre engine, the 3.0 CS is the more powerful and motorsport special offering from BMW and actually kick-started the whole “ultimate driving machine” tag line. Not many have been built so it is a rare class but for Iron Man it had to be more than that.

Enter SpeedKore which is a famous tuner for American muscle cars and also working with carbon fibre. Mr Robert Downey Jr. earlier has owned two cars from this company itself so it took no hesitation for him to entrust his new prized possession to them for some added power and customizations. His previous two cars made by SpeedKore were muscle cars and they are undoubtedly cool by all means but this is something different.

In-fact this has been the first European project by SpeedKore and the styling on the outside is still more or less is in-tact, with the gorgeous lines not being messed about. However a closer look reveals some cool touches and some carbon fibre magic being sprinkled onto it. For example the lower part of the front bumper is all carbon fibre plus the entire steel body has been meticulously restored. Even the colour scheme on this car is custom made for the Iron man himself, while special forged wheels and other sporty trimmings makes this old-school racer from the past look all sharpened up.

However everything pales into insignificance when you open that shapely hood and find a 3.5 liter straight-six from an E34 BMW M5.

Yes the 3.0 CS motor has been replaced with a much more powerful engine which now makes 300 plus horses and it is enough to propel

this car to serious speeds and also make it compete with any of the fast modern machinery available today. Curiously Mr. Robert Downey Jr. chose a 4-speed automatic in place of a manual (presumably for the traffic) but that said things like the Brembo brakes and Bilstein shock absorbers add serious performance car credentials.

Inside, it looks stunning with a homage to the past and keeping classic look in-tact albeit with “some” modern creature comforts. By that we mean there is a hidden touch-screen and it is also laden with all the features that is present on many luxury cars today. However the period correct brown leather fits in perfectly with the scheme of things while contrast stitching, wood grain and classic instruments further complete the look. Everything has been re-done but keeping in mind the personality of the car and also to match the tastes of the man himself.

Also on his request the rear seats have been deleted to make way for a custom luggage area- along with matching luggage of course.

As you can guess the actor took great interest in this project and was involved in it from the start with his own ideas. This is by far one of the best “restomod” cars we have seen and while this is a phenomenon that is currently gripping the high-end collector car world, the lure of a personalized car along with yesteryear good looks is something which is interesting many high-end car collectors, celebrities and also capturing the public imagination in the same vein.

As the name says, the concept of a “restomod” is basically the body of a classic car infused with modern day parts inside. Thus you get all the thrills but without the spills i.e. squeaky old brakes, maintenance, lack of modern amenities et al. However there are some car collectors that would take an axe to it as originality and correct restoration matters more.

However the success of restomods and in this case, a brilliant mix of the old and news says that it is here to stay and go forward like no other. In the end it is about enjoying these beautiful machines and driving them the way they were always meant to. JULIEN CADRO INJECTING NEW ECO-FRIENDLY LIFE INTO YACHTING | BY RAJ GILL

T

he yachting industry is about to get all shook up, enter Julien Cadro, the young French yacht designer who is determined to inject new eco-friendly life into yachting.

Brought up on the French Riviera Julien was inspired by his seaside home to follow his dreams of bringing innovation to the industry.

Julien took time out of his busy schedule to talk with Journalist Raj Gill all about how he became a yacht designer and how he is coping with the pandemic and his plans for the future.

Tell me a little about yourself.

If I have to talk about yacht design, I can say that I really like the work done by Lobanov design and Sinot design because I am seduced by their ideas and their abilities to develop amazing global concepts.

My name is Julien. I am 23 years old and I’m a French yacht designer, I graduated in 2019.

Where did you grow up? And how did that have an influence on the career you chose to pursue?

I grew up in France in a little seaside resort called La Baule. I think that I decided to design yachts because I grew up next to the sea, going for many walks on the seafront when I was a child.

How did your journey as a designer begin?

My journey in yacht design is relatively new as I am only 23 years old. My first contract was to be in England last March but unfortunately, my contract was canceled due to the coronavirus. Then I built my design studio in order

What inspires you?

I am inspired by architecture. I try to develop simple and pure shapes that we can find in architecture, where all the lines are really organized.

Who inspires you?

I also admire the work done by Luca Bassani with his Wally brand, he shook up the yacht industry.

I have to say that I really love the work done

by Guido De Groot and his team for Vanquish Yachts.

And last but not least, I really like the work of the architect Roman Vlasov and the painter Françoise Nielly.

Yachts are not typically known to be eco-friendly, how will you incorporate this into your designs and still make them pleasing to the client?

I think that is certainly an issue with yachts but things are moving. My first client, the Monaco based start-up, is building electric and eco-friendly boats. We have new eco-friendly materials to build yachts. I designed Ecoo in order to show a different version of what yachts of the future could look like, especially with innovative materials.

There are new projects of hydrogen boats too in order to decrease the carbon footprint. Many people are concerned about global warming so things will change, I’m sure.

What unique qualities do you bring to the design process?

I studied design in an automotive design school, so I have a different approach from people who studied in yacht design school. I think I am quite good at finding some nice proportions and playing with them. If you have a look at my project Speculo or Praesidium, you can see that proportions are really different from what the yacht industry typically offers.

I think that I am resilient and I never give up.

How do you keep up to speed with the innovations in yacht design? Which designer do you most admire?

I think you just have to be curious, and keep reading news about the industry. I think that

I particularly admire Philipp Starck for his amazing work on Venus Yacht and the A yacht.

I love the work of different design studios like Guido de Groot, Lobanov, Sinot Design, Vripack, Winch Design, Espen Oeino, and Alberto Mancini too.

What are/have been your biggest challenges in your creative process?

I think I could say the biggest challenge I had was for my graduation project. The challenge was to design a sailing boat for disabled people.

At this moment this is just a graduation project but I hope this project will become reality soon because I am convinced that this project could be a breath of fresh air of disabled people.

What inspires you to work on a specific project?

I think the best engine to work on a project is to work on a challenging project when people tell you, “That’s not possible”. It just allows you to do your best.

What does your work process involve?

The most important thing is to ask questions in order to create the smartest project. I always try to be sure that my answer fits the client’s demand. After this analysis part, you can begin to draw and imagine the project but the most important step is to understand what the client wants. If you are going in the right direction the project will be really pleasurable.

What are the important lessons you have learned along the way?

Designers have to be resilient. The main lesson I’ve learned is that we have to understand precisely what the client wants. If you don’t clearly understand what the goal is, the main idea of the project, it will be a bad project and it will not be pleasurable to work on.

What is the most favorite part of your job?

My most favorite part is doing renders at the end of a project because thanks to the current tools we can do some incredible photo realistic renders. At this stage, you can see if your project is good or not, and if all the decisions you took along the project were good or not.

What do you think sets your designs apart?

I think all my projects are quite simple with tended lines and well proportioned. I like to

have only a few strong lines in order to have a simple read of the boat. Design is all about proportions.

What is the best thing about being a designer?

The best thing is to have the opportunity to work on different projects and to express our creativity.

Describe your designs in three words.

Simple + Complex = Simplex If you hadn’t become a designer, what would you have become?

When I was a child I wanted to become an architect, I was always drawing bikes, cars, boats and houses. Today I often draw some houses just for enjoyment. That’s why I am really inspired by architecture.

How are you coping during this pandemic?

The beginning of the pandemic was hard because of my project being canceled, but I think that people suffered more than me so we have to move forward.

Has it affected your work?

Yes sure, but I think everybody was affected, in the right or the wrong way.

Has the demand for yachts increased or decreased?

I have been lucky to find new projects during this period but globally the demand for yachts has decreased, many projects were postponed due to financial issues and uncertainty.

What exciting projects are in the pipeline for the rest of 2020 and 2021?

I am currently working on the contest of the Young Designer Award organized by Boat International. I am really enjoying developing this project and I hope it will gain the attention of the jury.

My other great project is that I am currently moving from France to the Netherlands that is a land of yacht design.

“What is your favorite project?”

My answer would be my graduation project because I think that’s my smartest project.

RICHARD LANDRY Perfecting the language of Architecture | BY HELÉNE RAMACKERS

For the past 34 years, Richard Landry has created the most exquisite one-of-a-kind homes with his incredible architecture. Upscale Living magazine spoke to him and discovered that behind these palatial homes is a soft-spoken man who enjoys nothing more than making his clients’ dreams come true.

Richard, tell us a bit about yourself.

I am French-Canadian; I was born in a little town about an hour outside of Montréal. I went to the School of Architecture in Montréal. I studied in Copenhagen in my last year, which was the perfect way to be exposed to the modernism of Scandinavian architecture and traditional European architecture in my travels throughout Europe.

After completing my studies, as Quebec was going through a bit of a recession and Western Canada was booming, I went out to Alberta to work, which was a great experience. Three years later, when Alberta entered a recession, Los Angeles seemed like the logical option, as a lot of good architecture comes out of LA. I arrived in LA in 1984 and worked for a couple of firms before opening my own company, Landry Design Group, in 1987.

When did you realize you want to become an architect?

I have always enjoyed being creative; I took art classes as a child-- painting, drawing, and making sculptures; I was constantly drawing and sketching. I recall my aunt telling me later that when I was around the age of six, I told her I wanted to design buildings when I was older. I think I was born with it – it was never a decision I made; it was natural.

You started your own firm, Landry Design Group in 1987, and I read you have quite the portfolio of private residences. Which ones have been highlights for you, past and present?

We have done such a wide range of architectural styles, everything from modern to classic.

Our projects are so different from one another.

I see our clients in these projects, their personalities; we design custom homes tailored to each of these clients.

Recently we completed a very large project in Asia, which was amazing - the sheer size of it.

The clients were incredible - I have always said you need great clients to do great projects.

Twenty years ago, we designed a traditional Mediterranean house for some wonderful clients. They came back all these years later and asked us to create a guest house for them, a small version of the main house built on the

same property. When we started to look at the context and the property, we suggested that it would be really fun to create a little jewel box that was completely different and would appear as a piece of art in the garden. The outcome is something very modern and in complete contrast to their home.

A client in Los Angeles, whose main residence was designed by LDG, wanted a second home.

It is a similar story: the main residence is very traditional, and the new home is quite different. The architectural language of the second home was inspired by the great arc walls of artist Richard Serra. It was an exciting project to design; it incorporates sculptural forms, both functional and expressive.

For quarterback Tom Brady and his wife, model Gisele Bündchen, we designed a home in Boston. This was our second project for them, and the house, which is very different from the previous one, feels right in context with its surroundings. As a studio for Gisele, we designed a small barn structure that looked like it had been there forever. She loved the character and simplicity so much that it became her retreat on the property.

We have also recently designed some more modern houses with wonderful clients. Every time we do something contemporary, we write our language. When we do something more

classical, the rules are written; the calculations are there, and you follow a specific language.

Yet every project has a different story and narrative, which we develop in conversation with our clients.

How hands-on are you?

I am very much involved. The part I love the most is the creativity behind the design, coming up with the concept, the big idea.

I personally sit down with the clients to get the information, the program, to understand how they want to live and what will influence their lifestyle. Do they entertain, how often, large vs. small groups, casual or formal, are they raising a new family, are they empty nesters? All these factors are important when designing a home that is functional for our clients. In certain cases, we have to evaluate how important the re-sale value is and address a broader market with our design. As the project moves forward, I work very closely with the associate and team assigned to the project; I love the technical aspects of what we do. We have great communication systems within the office that enable us to stay on top of our projects. I feel that with every new project, we raise our own bar. These are custom one-of-akind homes, and they require our very best.

What is essential for you to incorporate into a design?

To really listen to a client and understand their lifestyle. The cultural impact is important.

We have worked in 17 countries worldwide, and it is very important to be respectful of the different cultures and lifestyles.

So, clients create their own architectural language?

With every project we ask ourselves: what is the narrative that will influence a project? It is about creating your own rules; with every project we look what the site has to offer, what the opportunities are and what the client might relate to, whether it is nature or art.

I assume you work closely with the interior designer on a specific project.

Yes, we like to bring them on early so that they are part of the process. Once we are done with a schematic design, we develop the floor plan and exterior language for the house, and by then, we start to know our clients better.

We enjoy a healthy relationship with the interior designers, and during the process, the vision between the architecture and interior designer becomes seamless.

What inspires you?

Everything inspires me. Travel; I like to be inspired by art; the property itself; I am constantly researching architecture from around the world.

Is modern technology and high-end security also fundamental?

There are amazing products out there that are beautiful. Technology is becoming more reliable and user-friendly. Our clients nowadays are very tech-savvy, and we keep up to date with the latest in technology, so we can incorporate options that can be upgraded in future.

Did you design your own home?

Of course! My husband, Chris, and I are drawn to different architectural styles, so designing our home together was a great experience. He likes the aesthetic and language of traditional architecture, and I am attracted to contemporary design. Our solution was to create a “hybrid” home - that blends the two ideas and layers the elements of the two styles to create a harmonious fusion.

Exciting projects on the horizon?

We have been fortunate to have amazing clients and be involved with some unique projects. One unforgettable experience was

being commissioned to remodel a home that Frank Gehry designed some 30 years ago, and to adapt it to the needs of the modern lifestyle. We got to present our design to Frank Gehry himself, discuss the changes, and receive his feedback. It was really a oneof-a-kind experience, and we look forward to seeing the project completed.

It is not a secret that we have an amazing new project with Kylie Jenner. We worked with her parents when she was very young, and she remembered that. Her family is interested in architecture, and she understands design and grasps the creative process, which makes designing her home a great experience for us as well.

Every project we take on is a new challenge, and it is another opportunity to do something really fun. Fun is a word that I use all the time. I want it to be fun because it can be a very stressful and challenging process, and we want to approach it with the right attitude. he oldest hat shop in the world has unveiled its latest women’s capsule collection by its Couture Collection head designer, the awardwinning Awon Golding.

Lock & Co was first established in 1676. But its women’s department only opened in 1993. The once male enclave now sells haute couture turbans and perching berets as well as chic cloches, skipper caps, raindrop cap, Dick Tracy fedoras and other ladies’ head-wear.

Her “Yoko” is a short-brimmed straw braid boater finished with an ivory buntal camellia and tonal galloon ribbon detailing. “Meghan” (£895/ $1129) is a medium sinamay and pinokpok hat with buntal camelia detailing. “Marlene” (£1250/$1129) is an abstract top hat constructed from draped black crinoline and finished with ivory. “Bianca” is an oversized rose turban crafted from ivory silk organza and finished with handsewn pearl detailing.

A

ward winning beauty therapist to the stars of the big screen and British royalty Deborah Mitchell took time out of her busy schedule to chat with our Journalist Raj Gill.

Deborah is famous for creating her own all-natural organic product range, incorporating the all-important and unique ingredient, bee venom.

Heaven is now a worldwide success, with products and treatments available nationwide and around the world such as Hong Kong, South Africa, Australia, Dubai and America, to name but a few.

Throughout the years, Heaven’s award-winning skincare has amassed a celebrity following its range of products and treatments, including Dannii Minogue, Emilia Fox, Michelle Pfeiffer and even royalty who love the products and treatments.

How are you coping with the current pandemic?

I‘m one of “life’s positive people,” and I always look on a bright side. It can be hard to think like this, especially during lock-down, when I know people suffering and are still suffering, but I enjoyed being forced to stay at home. I

caught up with all the jobs I had been putting off due to being at work, and I even had the time to design some new products which will be coming out soon. We also pitched in with the national effort and supplied NHS workers with products from our range.

How much has it impacted your life/work?

We sell to stores and salons worldwide, so when they had to shut, we lost half of our global business overnight. Thankfully, our online sales increased significantly over the last six months; I think people really felt the need for little luxuries and treats to get them through.

How did your journey as a skin care expert begin?

I signed up for a beauty course at my local college and became a mobile therapist by the time I was 17, using what I learned on the job to devise remedies that would help specific complexion complaints. I started mixing and blending essential oils into various creams and using them on myself. I was very inventive even then.

I trained as a Level 7 International Aesthetician – it was a long course but really comprehensive – and then after working for two companies, I decided to start building my own business. It

went from a small kitchen table operation to a business with global recognition.

What/who do you draw your inspiration from?

I draw my inspiration from the need to help people feel happier. I have created each one of my products to solve a problem that someone is suffering from, whether that’s psoriasis, acne, eczema, or sensitive skin – they tell me how it affects their lives want to help them. It’s about me thinking and listening to my heart for what feels right.

What are/have been your biggest challenges in your creative process?

I suppose looking back, I would say that my biggest challenge was lack of funds when I first started Heaven. Having said that, I wouldn’t have invented such wonderful products, like my Bee Venom Mask, if I had everything at my fingertips. I told you I always look on a bright side!

What inspires you to work on a specific project?

I’m going to surprise you now because I see a need – say helping someone who suffers from

BEAUTY break-outs – and I try and find a way to cure it. So I ask for inspiration, and I go to sleep; it’s like my brain shuffles in the night, and the problem is solved.

Having said that, though, the only time this didn’t really work for me was with my new Nettle Venom Cream. I wanted to create a vegan version of my Bee Venom, but it just didn’t come to me like it usually does. I couldn’t find a way to capture the active sting in the nettle; it sounds so simple, but nettles don’t sting when it rains, so I had to work around that. It really was a case of try, try and try again. Thankfully, I didn’t give up, and after five years of trial and error I created the most effective 100% plant-based anti-aging cream available.

Do you have a favorite product from the range?

My Age Defiance Cream, it was the one of the first products I invented. I wanted something that would be a real “all-rounder”; that plumped-out lines, lightened and helped prevent spot breakouts while at the same time ensuring it would be suitable for all skin types. Very quickly, word got out, and it became a bestseller. I remember Victoria Beckham phoning me up to thank me, and as a fledgling beauty business I was blown away by how much she loved my favorite cream.

If you were limited to just one product for life, which would it be?

Definitely Age Defiance – because I suffer from spots and age lines, it’s just perfect for my skin. And if I could choose another one to see me through then, it would be my Gold Bee Venom Mask because we all need some luxury in our lives, and skincare should be no different.

What is the most common skincare mistake women make?

I see just as many clients who have spent years trying to dry out oily skin as I see those who put too much oil on dry skin.

The skin needs to be balanced to look and feel healthy because this is where it performs as its best. Finding products that keep your skin in a state of equilibrium is key.

What would you recommend for really dark circles?

I developed my new Bee Venom Eyes to specifically tackle the delicate skin around the eyes. Its rich formula is light enough so that it doesn’t weigh down the area yet effective enough to target puffiness and dark circles while relaxing fine lines and wrinkles.

Is there anything I should do differently in my nightly skin care routine vs. my daily skin care routine?

Many companies offer different day and night creams, but this is often more of a marketing tool. My products can be used at any time – the Overnight Success, for example, is just as effective if you apply last thing at night as it is if you apply first thing in the morning. I can only put so many active ingredients into one pot, so using a different product for day and night – like my Age Defiance and my Bee Venom Mask – mean even better results.

What is the ideal age to start a skincare routine?

The younger you start looking after your skin, the better it will look as you get older.

Believe me, if you can get into the habit of an effective daily routine in your teens, your complexion will thank you as you reach your 40s and 50s.

What’s the most important factor in choosing a new product?

I always advise clients to understand what kind of skin they have – dry, sensitive, aging, spot-prone; do they suffer rosacea or psoriasis? I know many people who have spent a small fortune buying the wrong products. At Heaven we have created a range of No Problem Kits aimed at tackling a multitude of complexion woes and mean that you can target your specific issue without wasting money.

What tips do you have for people who want to make wellness a priority, but feel like they are too busy?

Get up ten minutes earlier. It doesn’t take long each day to take some time away from the noise – getting used to ten minutes of meditation or relaxation every day has so many benefits.

How long from the first deliberations until the end product?

to me as outer beauty I love seeing how my products or treatments really make life better for someone.

What do you think sets your skincare apart?

My products are best known for being innovative and instant, and the fact that I have a long list of celebrity and royal clients is testament to this. We’re different to so many other brands because we use totally natural, organic ingredients that are not tested on animals; we lead the way when it comes to recycling and have never used boxes for our products; and anyone can use our range, even those with the most sensitive skin thanks to my award-winning anti-allergy formula.

Describe your products in three words?

Innovative, effective and instant.

You work with so many celebrities – who do you enjoy working with the most?

A new product concept can usually take between two to three years from conception to sale. However my new Nettle Venom Anti-Aging cream took me more than five years, but it was certainly worth the wait.

What does your work process involve?

I’m constantly researching; I see it as my hobby – I love learning new things and gaining new information. But research alone doesn’t help me actually come up with the ideas; it tends to be the other way round. In fact I get some of my best ideas when I’m relaxing in the bath! The idea comes first, and then I have to work out how to make it a reality. This involves lots of problem solving as sometimes the ingredients I imagined using may not work together. Some of my ideas actually never make it to market, but that doesn’t hold me back – I just keep coming up with new ideas. Take Nettle Venom – I wanted to create a vegan alternative to my Bee Venom for as long as I could remember. To make this into an effective anti-aging cream was near impossible because I couldn’t keep the venom active.

I’ve been so lucky to work with many wonderful clients, whether they are famous or not. I’m especially fond of the Duchess of Cornwall; I started treating her in the run-up to her wedding to Prince Charles. I’ve known Her Royal Highness for nearly 14 years – she has a wonderful personality, which shines through, and provides her natural glow.

And have you ever felt daunted by a big name celebrity that you have worked with?

No, I never have. I admit I get very shy when I meet anyone new in a normal social setting, but when I am looking after clients and know that I can help them, I realize how good I am at my job.

What exciting projects are in the pipeline for the rest of 2020 and 2021?

I’m always working on something exciting. Watch this space!

What are the important lessons you have learned along the way?

Don’t give up on your dreams – if you believe in what you are doing and have passion for it, it will work out. You also need to realize your strengths and weaknesses and use them to your advantage; because I’m dyslexic, my brain has to work harder than other peoples, but this has always helped me see things that others may miss.

What is the most favorite part of your job?

I have always loved looking after people, and there is no better feeling than helping someone who may have suffered with a skin issue for years and I can give them their confidence back. I’m probably not your average industry boss; I’m very hands-on, and I still work on the counter and perform treatments so, I have the privilege of meeting my customers. Because inner beauty, is just as important

W

hen you think of Cognacs, you think of Hennessy and amongst its collection, the “Hennessy X.O” remains one of the most alluring choices and the “extra old” blend is something that has stood the test of time. As said by the maker itself; this cognac has been immune to fashion trends and it exists beyond the realm of such whims.

Created in 1870 by Maurice Hennessy, the Hennessy X.O gave birth to an entire family of cognacs. It became popular in the US in 1870, followed by Asia (Shanghai and Hong Kong) in 1872. The term was originally coined by none other than Maurice Hennessy himself in the 19th century, and it was first bottled in 1870 for family and friends.

Thus it was not intended for commercial consumption at first and was also was a radical shift regarding cognacs with higher potentials.

Then in 1947, Gérald de Geoffre, a member of the Hennessy family, made the distinctive carafe which was a departure from the time when cognac still came in bottle known as charentaises. That design in its essence has been kept since then, where the curves are inspired by the contours of a cluster of grapes- a homage to the blend s origins.

This cognac is about having many facets as the company so aptly describes with “seven chapters” which are divided into sweet notes, rising heat, spicy edge, flowing flames, chocolate lull and wood crunches. Thus it has a rich and elegant taste which is a blend of more than a hundred different eaux-de-vie, between 12 to 30 years-old.

AIDIA STUDIO 25, Luxury Pods | BY JENNIFER DURRANS

A

futuristic mosaic of culture, art and middle eastern charm, Abu Dhabi’s golden ambiance amalgamates with rich surroundings, to tempt any discerning traveler. Mexican designers, Aidia Studio are pioneers in experimental design, piquing curiosity with their dynamic urbanism and creative disciplines. Aidia architects Rolando Rodriguez Leal and Natalia Wrzask are at the helm and although in its inception, this project conjures up a hypnotizing marvel of creativity.

Nestled within the Rub’ al Khali desert is an apparition that appears to capture the mind with a revolutionary depiction of arenaceous panache.

These arrive in the form of 25 luxury hotel pods with collapsible shells, a cutting-edge design which melt effortlessly into the dry dunes. Named the Oculus, they feature distinguished domes, reminiscent of a Mosque apex. The curvilinear structure offers a panoramic spectacle, delving into the depths of its surroundings. The exterior double-glazed domes present each visitor with shading, temperature control and camouflage which allows optimum privacy and an immersive experience. The dome’s structure is formed with sixty shading panels, an opaque filigree forges a deeper layer of protection. There is no denying the stimulating intentions of its design, Aidia specifies that the inspiration was harnessed from the desert’s unforgiving mural. Cacti species in the Rub’ al Khali desert inspired the outer layer of each pod; thick scooped leaves, diversified with a quilted texture regulate temperature and eradicate solar radiation.

As these panels ascend, they densify to modulate vertifical sun radiation in the soaring summer months. You can observe ferocious sandstorms from comfortable, safe and luxurious sanctuary.

This development is a testament to contemporary experimental designing. It encapsulates science and style and substance that is reciprocated by the pleasure of all visitors. This area of Abu Dhabi had long been an obscure territory, in the South Arabian desert. As it climbs to unforeseeable heights, the Oculus can divulge both its secrets and aesthetic to humanity. The retractable windows allow a surge of light at all times of the day, as well as creating a hot spot for nature observation. The size of the pods will vary from 50m² and VIP pods that stand at around 80m² in size.

“The cabin is grounded through thirty adjustable pillars allowing installation in different ground conditions. The construction process should be quick and with minimal disturbance to the natural environment,” says Aidia Studio.

CONSERVATION AT THE CORE Sustainability is a topic of conversation that is reaching the desks of many architectural designers as we approach a green revolution. Geologist, Kenneth W Glennie recently highlighted the changes occurring within the desert as a direct result of global warming. In the coming years, the return of “the ideal conditions of the Climatic Optimum” may become a reality, but how this will affect the dry desolate land is yet to be seen. Therefore, Aidia have formulated unprecedented environmentally-friendly features. Some of these include flexible dye-sensitized solar

cells, which are sewn into the shading fabric. In addition to this, Aidia have acknowledged the very nucleus of which the hotel will operate - its energy supply. Electrodes will supply the power and water tanks will filter and recycle used water which align with modern standards for sustainability. A concomitant theory that shall be implemented across all areas of its design. Minimal disruption to the environment means that no habitual wildlife will be affected.

next year and an opening in the not too distant future. The beginning of an alluring adventure for both the middle east and Aidia. A luxurious development that is likely to stimulate both intrigue and conversation in the world of architecture and travel. A well deserved treat to the tourism industry as we enter the ‘new normal’ of travel. 

Not only is its architectural composition enamors, but rather the scientific theories behind this project are equally as seducing. The Oculus complex is harmonizing with ethereal intrigue, as each cabin is strategically positioned to mirror a constellation. You can peer into the speculum of divinity as you grapple with the fascination of this novel construction.

At the heart of the Oculus, are four larger scale pods that house a number of things, such as reception lounges, restaurants, and a kitchen; which will form part of the main hub. Transition sleeves will be interconnected with an elevated outdoor deck, for accessibility and easy transportation. The interiors will reflect the voracious milieu, with a spectrum of neutral certified woods and with the congenial addition of organic fabrics. The palette of neutral tones coalesce blissfully with the achromatic dunes of the Rub’ al Khali desert. Rustic tones add richness to the interiors, optimizing luxury. A modern charm that places the desert onto the map with this imposing yet enticing structure. A design that not only morphs into its backdrop but that spearheads the proposal of green architecture in its conceptual sketches. Nick Liberato The Face of Netflix series, Restaurants on the Edge

Nick Liberato is the face of the hit Netflix series “Restaurants on the Edge” (Season 2 just released), which focuses on helping restaurants in distress by performing consulting, restructuring and turnaround services in a holistic manner. His worldwide adventure takes viewers to some of the world’s most spectacular locations including mountainsides and white beaches, which despite their outstanding views need a push to live up to their magnificent views.

ick has teamed up with Mike Dalewitz to specialize in business restructuring and turnaround. They have created a new company 618 Hospitality Group which provides restaurants with the tools to perform, prosper, and profit while navigating the Covid-19 pandemic.

They took time out of their busy schedules to chat with Journalist Raj Gill, all things culinary and the impact that the pandemic has had on the hospitality industry.

First of all let me start by saying I am a huge fan of the show, as are our readers. Will there be another season and if so when can we expect the next season to air?

NICK: Unfortunately with the pandemic and travel restrictions, it’s keeping a lot of production from moving on. So it is difficult to say.

How did you secure your job on the programme?

NICK: I worked very hard at what I do to be the best for the job.

How were your co-hosts selected?

NICK: Very carefully and they were absolutely the best picks.

How do you select the restaurants that you make over on the show?

NICK: We go through online reviews of restaurants with great views and look for the ones that are struggling.

And how long does it actually take to turn the restaurant around?

NICK: Roughly a week for each episode. It’s up to the owner to really carry that out after we leave. Consistency is everything.

You work closely with the restaurateurs, what impact does that have on you?

NICK: A lot actually. I want nothing more than to see them succeed and flourish in their business but we are always running against the clock to give them as much help as possible for the time we are there. Peoples’ lives and family are on the line and I take that very personal to always give them my all.

Once the job is complete do you still keep in touch with the restaurateurs and keep an eye on their progress? Have any of them regressed to their old bad habits?

NICK: I have actually kept in touch with a few of the owners. Mostly just keeping tabs and an-

swering business related questions. I have really enjoyed seeing them grow with their business.

I particularly enjoyed the Hawaii episode, did you really get high?

NICK: It was much more about “getting centered” rather than high. It gave me clarity, I was definitely in the moment.

Who is the most famous person you have cooked for? Did you feel intimidated?

NICK: A big part of my career was working as a private chef to the stars. There was one party in particular in LA when I cooked for a small dinner party that included Oprah, Paul McCartney, Bruce Spingsteen, Elvis Costello, Ringo, Tom Hanks and Martin Short. I was for sure nervous but once I started cooking all was good. I treat everyone I cook for like a rockstar, but after that meal I was happy to say that I cooked for the Beatles!

Which star did you most enjoy cooking for, and which star did you least enjoy cooking for?

NICK: I really enjoyed cooking for Anthony Kiedis from the Red hot Chili Peppers as well as comedian/actor Hank Azaria. Both are great guys. The person I least enjoyed cooking for I would rather not name but at one time she was one of the biggest stars in the world and put the “D” in diva.

These are exciting times for you both, launching the 618 Hospitality Group as a response to the pandemic. What significance does the digits 618 hold for you both?

MIKE: We have never worked together before but instantly became “brothers from other mothers”. We were brought together by Rabbi Eric Goldberg of Shir Ami, who is also a “deadhead” and just an all round authentic, caring person and spiritual leader. He also has a passion for food and may have inspired our first 618 concept.

And how will you adapt 618 once this crisis is over?

And what is your background Mike?

One tragic fall out of the pandemic is the closure of some renown restaurants, do you forsee them re-opening in the future?

MIKE: Former NYC Club Promoter/Hustler, Creative Leader for Marketing /Event Agency, Lawyer Turned Serial Entrepreneur, Award Winning Software Developer, Business/Life Coach and Turn Around Specialist, Brought 3 “Boot Strapped” Startups to Double Digit, Multi-Million Dollar Exits in the last 10 years.

What inspired you to create the 618 Hospitality Group?

NICK: 618 is the birthdate of our daughters as well as one of our favorite Grateful Dead shows in 1974.

MIKE: 618 Started out as my favorite live Grateful Dead show to listen to (6/18/74 – Freedom Hall, Louisville, KY). My wedding date changed last minute after our hotel shut down for construction and was switched to 6/18. My daughter McKenzie was born…you guessed right on 6/18. I met Nick who was a fellow Grateful Dead Head and admired that show as well, but oddly enough, his daughter Bella was born on 6/18 as well. What a Cosmic Connection!

What specifically is your role Nick? And yours Mike?

MIKE: Nick is our COO and Executive Chef.

His role as COO is to create and implement strategies for both front and back of the house to make restaurants run more smoothly and efficiently with the best systems. Nick’s role as Executive Chef, is to be the “Chef Executive Officer” of 618’s Restaurants along with our clients who have signed on with us for Consulting Services.

And I am the Chairman and CEO of 618 Hospitality. I am also the Primary Investor, General Counsel, Business leader and Turn Around Specialist. I create alternative financial models and build and implement technology that is responsive to commercial and society issues. I also owned a Creative Agency and am responsible for the creative direction of the company.

Have you worked together before? I love the fact that a Rabbi brought you together, divine intervention?

MIKE: I exited my Company, HaystackID, in January 2020, after 13.5 years in the Legal Services and Technology Space. I was preparing to use my degree from Penn State in Wine Making and start a small vineyard and winery, but my passion in life for wanting my own restaurant group resurfaced and after a 15 year hiatus from wanting that dream to come true, I was now able to launch it with tremendous life experience and capital that I did not have back then in my 20s.

Will it be available online? Or will you just be focusing on specific areas?

MIKE: In the midst of the disruptive effect of Covid-19 on our Community in Bucks County Pennsylvania, a Philadelphia Suburb, we are going to predominately have our focus over here and the Greater Philadelphia area. As our company scales, we will be having both a virtual and on premises consulting option for restaurateurs.

What is the first piece of advice you give to restaurateurs struggling to operate during the pandemic?

MIKE: Think out of the box, push the envelope, stay focused and lose any sort of ego that you may have in order to bring in the proper outside resources whether knowledge or capital based.

Nick you own two restaurants, what changes have you put in place to deal with the crisis?

NICK: There have been many adjustments since day one of the pandemic pertaining to staffing, menu, hours and capacity. One of the best things that has happened is setting up 618 Hospitality.

NICK: 618 will be the umbrella that sits over multiple restaurant concepts, consulting for businesses the need help, a ghost kitchen for chefs to rent and a tech that will be integrated into restaurants.

MIKE: Some renown restaurants that have closed, may remain closed, others will reopen with a different take on things, learning from what has worked and what has not. I just saw Gotham Bar and Grill, which is a favorite of mine, will be reopening under “Gotham” after closing “for good” in March and I am sure we can still expect excellence and some needed modifications for the post Covid-19 World. I wish the other establishments have the same capability and I hope they feel free to reach out to 618 Hospitality for some capital and consulting needs in this crisis.

In your opinion what is the future for the culinary industry?

NICK: I feel things are getting simplified again.

Fine dining will be less desired as it’s expensive and also makes it tough to be sustainable for a business with so many restrictions to cover costs. A liquor license always helps but making sure you have outdoor dining will certainly be something to look for.

What is the one question you wish a journalist would ask you?

NICK: What do I really want say to people who make modifications to a dish then judge it on a review?
