Sir RICHARD BRANSON A Luxury Property Empire | By Angela Sara West

lanes, trains and Virgin mobiles… with outstanding resorts around the globe, too, billionaire businessman, Richard Branson, has transformed our landscapes and skies with his boundless brand. Britain’s best-known entrepreneur talks to Angela Sara West about how he loves his favorite retreat in Mallorca so much, he bought it twice! Having clocked up five decades in business, Virgin’s expansion has seen Richard Branson successfully diversify in sectors from music and mobiles, health care and health clubs, to trains and transatlantic travel, cruise ships and space ships. Multi-award-winning Richard has been knighted by Prince Charles at Buckingham Palace and starred in blockbusters Casino Royale, Around the World in 80 Days and Superman Returns, along with small-screen series The Simpsons, Friends and Baywatch. Barefoot luxury at Branson’s Necker Island home Offscreen, the white-sand beaches of Necker Island, lapped by turquoise water and stunning views of neighboring islands, are where this adventurous tycoon usually resides… In 1978, Richard bought his 74-acre Caribbean retreat in the British Virgin Islands from British aristocrat, Lord Cobham, to impress his future

wife, Joan. It marked the start of his luxury property portfolio, Virgin Limited Edition, which now includes a Swiss ski lodge, a Kenyan safari camp and a kasbah in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains. In 2013, Necker became Richard’s main residence. “I left Britain for my love of the beautiful British Virgin Islands and, in particular, Necker Island. We’ve built our home there, a place where my family and I are able to truly relax. I’m so inspired by this idyllic island paradise’s beauty.” Having transformed it into a multi-millionpound luxury resort, complete with a helipad and luxury catamaran yacht, Necker is now one of the most exclusive retreats in the world… The private island paradise is a playground for Richard’s famous friends and he has played host to a “who’s who” of Hollywood heavyweights, rock stars, royals and ex-presidents there, including Robert De Niro, Demi Moore, Harrison Ford, Kate Moss, Mick Jagger, George Michael, Harry Styles, Mariah Carey, Princess Diana (with Princes William and Harry in tow), The Duchess of Cambridge, and Barack and Michelle Obama.

Planes, flames & hurricanes But the business magnate’s abode has twice been devastated by Mother Nature…. The Great House was rebuilt following a fire caused by a lightning strike during Hurricane Irene in 2011, with actress Kate Winslet heroically rescuing Richard’s 90-year-old mother, Eve. Necker reopened in 2013, 20-percent bigger and better, but the main house was left uninhabitable again after being hit by Category-5 Hurricane Irma last year. “We felt the full force of the strongest hurricane ever in the Atlantic Ocean,” says Richard, who rode out the storm in his wine cellar. A long-standing love affair with Mallorca While it’s out of action, the Virgin boss has been enjoying his privately-owned collection of award-winning luxury hotels and retreats with Virgin Limited Edition around the world. “Whilst Necker Island is being rebuilt, I’ve had the pleasure of spending time at many of these properties,” he tells me. And he’s been enjoying a slice of Spanish life at his newly-renovated gated Mallorcan estate, Son Bunyola, on the island’s

northwest coast, more than ever. “Son Bunyola is my favorite Mallorcan retreat. I try to visit as often as I can.” “Mallorca has always held a special place in my heart, since I first visited as a child.” But that love affair was marred with disputes with the local authorities, who refused planning permission for the British businessman to build a luxury boutique hotel at his spectacular Son Bunyola, resulting in him selling up in 2002, selling his iconic hotel, La Residencia, a Mecca for A-listers, including Leonardo Caprio, Goldie Hawn and Michael Douglas, too. Back in business in Bunyola! Following a change of heart and Richard’s realization that he really missed Mallorca, he says he couldn’t resist when the opportunity arose to buy Bunyola back lock stock for around £11m in 2015. He aims to convert the estate into the very best eco-resort in Europe. “Central to the estate is a finca building dating back to the 1800s, surrounded by vines, citrus fruit trees, almonds and olive trees. It’s absolutely beautiful and I look forward to seeing how plans progress!” Sprawling over 700 acres, the expansive estate is part of a World Heritage site. Richard cites numerous reasons for choosing the area. “The northwest coast has always been a location for which I have great fondness. It has so

much to offer... unspoilt nature, picturesque villages, top-class restaurants and finca hotels and culture. The region is dominated by the Tramuntana mountain range and its breath-taking scenery, and is home to some of the most historical and picturesque towns on the island. My son, Sam, even named his own daughter Eva-Deià, in honour of the village of Deià, which is one of the most beautiful in the world.” Haute historic homes Overlooking 5km of breath-taking coastline, his property comprises the historic Mallorquín manor house (the above-mentioned finca) plus three country houses which he has recently transformed into ultra-luxury villas, available for exclusive hire. “We opened villas Sa Punta de S’Aguila and Sa Terra Rotja in summer 2016, with Son Balagueret opening last summer. We usually stay in Sa Terra Rotja, our four-bedroom villa situated near the edge of the estate, but I’d be torn if I had to pick a favorite out of the three.” Each villa boasts a private pool plus a dedicated concierge service via DEIA VIP to attend to every wish’n’whim. “Not to mention stunning views!”, adds Richard. “A stay at Son Bunyola is not like any villa stay, and it is so much more than a place to rest your head! All guests are encouraged to treat the villas like their own home from the moment they arrive; we like to ensure our guests feel special and receive excellent customer service, and aim to create a truly unique experience.” 15 Upscale Living Magazine |

With a strong ethos of giving back, the prolific philanthropist says Virgin Limited Edition’s recruiting policy is to give back to surrounding communities by offering training and employment. “We recruit locally at Son Bunyola, and source food and wine from right here in the region. We work hard to protect the beautiful landscape we’re so fortunate to occupy. Our approach includes a commitment to responsible supply chain management, fair trade policies, ethical dealings with our employees and the local community, and, of course, the environment.” Balearic playtime

His favorite things to do on the island? “That’s the beauty of Mallorca… there’s so much to do and something for everyone; even if it’s just picking a great sun lounger and sunbathing. I’m a bit of an adrenaline junkie, so I must have a way to stay active and adventurous, and Mallorca is great

for hiking and cycling. I’d also recommend setting sail and exploring the coastline of Tramuntana where you’ll find some great spots for snorkeling and the chance to discover some hidden caves. With clear Mediterranean waters, the area is perfect for scuba diving and fishing excursions, too.” The magic of Mallorca With dramatic scenery of verdant countryside against a backdrop of magnificent mountains and cobalt blue water, this Spanish island is nothing less than spectacular. “Mallorca is so special to me because it provides the perfect environment to relax, laugh, learn and love with my family.” Now he has grandkids, Richard says he enjoys being able to spend more time in a place that means a great deal to them all. “My favorite memories are the most simple; sitting around the table talking, admiring the scenery and enjoying meals and good company. We’ve had a special bond with the island for several generations, and I’m sure it will go on for generations to come!” FACTBOX 20 Upscale Living Magazine |

GIANNICO

“THE SHOES WE LOVE” | By Gerard Vallecello

I

f you are like the majority of women, you probably love shoes. The little angels that either give you height; posture or most important of all; dress your lovely feet. And when thinking of shoe designers, we think of course the legendary masters. --- There is a young master you must know. Nicolo Beretta; founder and designer of Giannico. Showing a great sense of style and innate creativity since a very young age. At 14 years old, young Milanese Nicolò moved to Sydney, Australia to pursue the business objectives of his family. Sydney’s cosmopolitan ambiance and its fervent multicultural communities provided Nicolò with experiences that influenced and forever changed his creative life. Soon after he shared his portfolio with no other than one of the masters himself. Mr. Manolo Blahnik alongside the late Franca Sozzani; EIC of Vogue Italia. Having received extraordinary feedback from such great captains of the industry, enforced; in 2013 at the age of 18; the founding of Giannico. The name Giannico is a portmanteau between his first name and his little brother’s name Giacomo. Yet starting a brand at such young age was not easy. At first, it was difficult to find people who believed in him, many tried to mislead him, while others associated him with a stereotype of a spoiled child. With perseverance and talent, he quickly learned to deal with this tough industry. Where most retailers are "now" ready to stand behind contemporary designers in a big way. In 2014, Giannico was selected to participate at the prestigious “Vogue Talents Corner.com” event in collaboration with Vogue Italia and TheCorner.com. Giannico’s exposure and

following only grew as many fashion icons such as Franca Sozzani, Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, Anna Molinari, Carla Sozzani, Anna Dello Russo, and Giuseppe Zanotti appreciated his collection. Later that year, Giannico had the incredible opportunity to be a part of the official calendar of the Milan Fall Fashion week and his first distributed collection was presented at the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum. Nicolò also has created a special edition for Luisa Via Roma, and won the ‘Who is on Next?’ contest in Rome; juried by Pierpaolo Piccioli of Valentino; Suzy Menkes, Miroslava Duma, Alexander Fury, Laura Lusardi, Bergdorf Goodman’s Paola Alvear and Sacks Fifth Avenue’s Colleen Sherin. His excellent craftsmanship and artistic ability are evident in everything that he creates, which is why the demand for his spectacular and eclectic shoes has increased since the establishment of his own label. For his past collections, the designer has taken inspiration from the works of Luis Bunuel and Salvador Dali. He incorporates elements of surrealism into his own brand of creative and elegant eclecticism. The result is a stunning collection of shoes, which are sensual, feminine, edgy, sophisticated, sexy, and extraordinarily beautiful. With his unparalleled talent and creative genius at such a young age, it seems that Nicolò Beretta is growing into international success. Found around the globe in stores like Barneys New York in the USA; ALTAYER BLOOMINDALE'S in the middle east; ATEMPO in Asia, online's FARFETCH, his creations are the type of shoes we love. https://giannicoofficial.com/

P R O F I L E “When the right frame is united with a painting, it’s an ‘aha’ moment that goes beyond words,” says Master Framer Eli Wilner. “It’s an experience.” During the 40 years that Wilner’s eponymous New York City gallery has been in business, he has had the privilege of experiencing thousands of such “aha” moments. In addition to framing the world’s masterworks for prime private clients, Wilner has provided antique frames or produced replicas for The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Smithsonian Institution and the White House as well as Sotheby’s and Christie’s. It was his team that recreated the mammoth eaglecrowned gilded frame for Emanuel Gottlieb Leutze’s 1851 painting Washington Crossing the Delaware, the star of the Met’s American Wing. And it was his gallery that procured the antique frame for the portrait of Sheik Zayed for his namesake museum in Dubai and two others for the new Louvre Abu Dhabi. Wilner’s gallery, which sells antiques for $6,500 to over $1 million and hand-carved replicas for $2,500 to over $2 million, is the Rolls-Royce of the framing field.

Aelbert Cuyp’s 17th-century The Valkhof at Nijmegen, in the collection of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields, was framed by Eli Wilner & Co.

“I’ve always been more expensive than any other framer,” he says. “There are reasons for this – I’m obsessed with perfection, I offer a legendary level of service, and I’m discrete – I create pseudonyms for my clients to protect their confidentiality, even, at times, from my own staff.” Wilner’s frames are guaranteed against accidents and wear and tear for life, and if they are not completed on time – a scenario that has never happened – clients are not charged. Wilner goes to great lengths (and heights) to select the proper frame for each artwork. Drawing from his collection of 4,000 antique American and European frames dating from the 15th to the 20th centuries as well as a global database collected over four decades, Wilner employs a sophisticated formula -- time period, artist’s intent and the aesthetics of scale, form and color – to create the most appropriate pairing. “Each artwork, regardless of when it was completed, should appear as if the artist just returned from the framer,” he says. Recently, a private client commissioned Eli Wilner & Co. to create a replica frame for a copy of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. “The client recreated the painting as it was right when it came out of da Vinci’s studio,” Wilner says. “It didn’t show its history -- there was no wear and tear or faded pigments. In a museum in Spain, we found a frame that da Vinci had used on one of his paintings and duplicated it minus 42 Upscale Living Magazine

its discoloration. The result when the new painting and the new frame came together was amazing.”

framing project, the Met’s Washington Crossing the Delaware, took more than two years to complete.

In another case, Wilner framed a $20-million, 6-foot-long 19th-century stilllife with an antique from his collection.

The painting’s original frame had been lost to time, and all Wilner and his team had to go on was an 1864 black-and-white photograph taken by Mathew Brady.

“The frame was identical to one the artist used in his lifetime,” Wilner says. “I’ve never seen another one that survived.” Wilner’s largest and most celebrated

“It was difficult to discern all the details,” Wilner says, “so there was a lot of intellectual guessing and research that we

had to do. It took at least 10 times before we were able to satisfy the curators and all agree that it was right.”

Today, the best examples of these “name” frames sell for 10s, even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Wilner also does a lot of framing projects for small museums and historical institutions.

Wilner rescued them from the trash bins of Manhattan’s Museum Mile – and obscurity. He started hanging them on the walls empty, one inside the other, like objets d’art, or turning them into mirrors and trays. In 1990, he sponsored the Met’s first-ever exhibition of empty frames.

“It’s always been my mission to help them,” he says. “I reduce the cost drastically – that’s my charitable contribution to the art world.” Aesthetics aside, frames inevitably enhance the value of the artwork they border. “An excellent frame will add 5 to 10 percent to the price,” Wilner says, adding that the world’s most expensive antique frame, a 17th-century Russian example hand-carved in amber, sold at auction for nearly $1 million 20 years ago. “On masterworks, this could mean millions. The stakes are high – that’s why auction houses ask me to provide frames.”

Wilner remains passionate about his work. “I have a master’s degree in fine arts and always thought that I would be a painter,” he says. “But framing became my art, and it has made me a collaborator with great works of art.” For more information, see Eliwilner.com.

In 1978, when Eli Wilner & Co. opened on the Upper East Side, the art world didn’t recognize the art of antique frames. In fact, in a quest to be more contemporary, major museums routinely discarded period frames, some of which were designed by the likes of iconic artists like James Abbott McNeill Whistler and Charles Pendergast.

Eli Wilner & Co. made a carved and gilded replica of the artist-designed frame for Childe Hassam’s Avenue in the Rain that is in the collection of the White House.

New Gallery Opening for

HEATHER JAMES FINE ART

By Heléne Ramackers

Expanding their national and global reach while celebrating their coming of age, Heather James Fine Art offers of noteworthy 19th-century, modern and contemporary art sees them maintaining the ranks of a reputable fine arts company.

T

wo new gallery openings will take place in San Francisco and Santa Barbara, forming the gallery’s fourth and fifth spaces, joining Palm Springs, Jackson Hole, Wyoming and New York in prime locations. Celebrating 20 years in 2017 with special exhibitions of Alexander Calder and leading Latin American artists, another milestone was the opening of their new private gallery in New York City. Working tirelessly to bring exceptional art to museums nationally and internationally through loans and acquisitions, Heather James Fine Art has ensured the best for 2018. On loan from Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, Circle of Animals / Zodiac Heads will be on display until December 30, 2018 at the Farnsworth Art Museum in Rockland, Maine. Featuring twelve animal symbols from the traditional Chinese zodiac, Weiwei’s sculpture installation re-envisions the ornate fountain clock. Weiwei touches on issues of looting, repatriation and cultural heritage and this will be his first presentation in Maine. A few major exhibitions will be held at the popular Palm Desert location, including Louise Bourgeois Holograms. Created in 1998 to 2004, this suite of eight holograms projected as one piece by the artist, contains imagery that includes a pair of lovers, chairs and a bell jar. The holographic image is created by using laser beams to record the light field reflected from an object and then burning that image onto a plate of

glass and scaling it at a one-to-one resemblance of the original material. Paintings by N.C. Wyeth and his progenies Andrew and Jamie Wyeth, Art of the Wyeth Family spans three generations. With strong roots along the East Coast, in coastal Maine and rural Pennsylvania, the artworks reflect the naturalistic depictions of the landscape, wildlife and area inhabitants. Despite the varied style and techniques from each family member, the works are unified by a solid commitment to capturing the superior beauty of their subject matter. The well-known American Jazz musician Herb Alpert maintains a second career as an abstract expressionist and sculptor. Herb Alpert: A Visual Melody, consists of abstract mixed-media paintings from the early 1990’s to 2017 with large and small-scale bronze sculptures made in the same time-frame. Captivating audiences with his expressive use of various media highlighting movement and form, translating art into a lyrical and haunting experience. At Jackson Hole, Wyoming, Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians can be seen. Featuring the full set of ten screen prints created by Warhol in 1986, portraits of well-known American ‘heroes’ Annie Oakley and Teddy Roosevelt are combined with Native American images and motifs that include kachina dolls, forming an iconic commentary on Americans’ communal mythologizing of the historic West. Offering an eclectic range of artworks that Heather James Fine Art is renowned for, the opening of the New York HJFA, located in Manhattan’s Upper East Side became a reality in 2017. Viewing is by appointment only and features works by Wojciech Fangor, the Wyeth family and Salvador Dali. It is a must-visit for art lovers throughout the world. For details about other upcoming exhibitions, please visit www.heatherjames.com. Follow HJFA on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. 45 Upscale Living Magazine |

Hailed as the interior designer to the stars, Jeff Andrews has been instrumental in creating many wonderful abodes. The focal point of the imposing entrance to the family home is the double-volume space, giving a modern yet bold twist with the use of a black and white checkerboard floor. In keeping with the aesthetically pleasing look, Andrews substituted the ‘safe white’ painted banister with a simple and chic look, albeit it not overdone. With a large Rose Tarlow table placed in the center of the staircase, the early-twentieth-century bent-glass-andbronze pendant perfects the scale of the otherwise overpowering space. The checkerboard floor flows into the dining room and when you look up the stairway, it looks almost like the keys of a piano. On the upper floor, a vintage gold-leaf mannequin and Cache sculptural chair complete the space with an old-world charm.

nterior designer Jeff Andrews, together with the matriarch of the Kardashian clan had a hand in fashioning a home so extraordinary, that she doesn’t mind letting the cameras in.

Merging the complexities of a strong-willed personality and a very creative individual could be a recipe for disaster, but thankfully the mutual respect between client and interior designer ironed out any such struggles. Three phases and two years later saw the 10,000 square-foot Hidden Hills family home converted into an artistic masterpiece, with a self-proclaimed control freak and a former choreographer becoming kindred spirits whilst the culmination of Hollywood glamor met Mediterranean chic. The results speak for themselves. http://www.jeffandrews-design.com/ 49 Upscale Living Magazine |

The glamorous retreat for the master bedroom was created using classic shapes and iridescent texture. A dramatic effect with a play of proportion was added with a custom designed wingback headboard, covered with a Romo velvet, completed with two stylized armchairs. Lots of plush furnishings were used and the geometric chocolate-and-platinum hued Kyle Bunting rug adds much-needed contrast and dimension to the room’s ritz. Fit for a queen? You betcha!

The reflective Donghia wallpaper for the ceiling was chosen by Andrews and the walls were wrapped in a metallic grass cloth by Maya Romanoff. With a textural quality that is impossible to get with paint, the wall coverings lend a visual interest without becoming too intrusive. The windows are covered in an airy, burgundystriped sheer from Romo, adding a bit of drama to the room. Having collected chandeliers over the years, Jenner was in agreement that they should take pride of place above the long, antique table.

An antique European fireplace surround replaced the ‘non- attractive’ one in the formal living room. The long-tufted velvet sofa was designed and placed on the opposite wall, with a wall-size antique mirror, creating an illusion of a much larger room. Knowing full well that the use of a mirror can change the shape and view of any room, Andrews is forever experimenting with different ways to incorporate mirrors into a space. Having recovered two of Jenner’s Rose Tarlow chairs with a small metallic check by Armani Casa, he complemented that with a tactile velvet from Nancy Corzine for a custom chaise. Wanting to tone down the color scheme while keeping it sophisticated, Andrews chose a lot of grays, creams and a bit of metallic.

The sparkly all-white kitchen is where the whole family gathers to enjoy a meal or just catch up. Vintage Murano chandeliers suspended over two islands with glistening Caesarstone countertops rounds off the polished look perfectly. The black La Cornue range was placed beneath a backsplash of silvery antique-mirror tiles. Connecting the kitchen to the backyard is a sliding door, accentuated by sheer Romo draperies which also leads to a swimming pool and an outdoor pavilion.

Joy!. That’s what Golf Professional Joseba Romero exudes when he’s asked about his job teaching golfers from around the world at the Riviera Maya Golf Course in Akumal, Mexico. | BY TIM COTRONEO

D

uring his first eight years teaching in his native country of Spain, Romero had a chance to play with and learn from the best of the best. Romero’s early years, rubbing elbows with PGA Tour stars like Sergio Garcia and John Rahm, helped him develop the teaching foundation he shares today. When offered the lead instructor reins at the Riviera Maya Golf Course, Romero leapt at the chance to work at a course that is the centerpiece to the luxurious Bahia Principe Resort, located 70-miles south of the Cancun International Airport. This same sense of happiness and wonderment struck renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Junior when he took on the task of designing this 7,300yard championship layout that overflows with amazing birdlife, wildlife, and Mayan history. What especially struck Trent Jones Jr. were the surprises he found murmuring below the surface of this land carved from deep within the Yucatan jungle. CENOTES, MAYAN WALLS, AND GOLF-LOVING IGUANAS During the building of the course in 2009, the construction crew heard water running beneath the property’s limestone surface. To their delight, multiple subterranean water bodies were uncovered in the form of rivers, springs, and open water pools. In the Mayan culture, these open pools or “cenotes” are considered sacred. In addition to these gaping cenotes that are featured in the Riviera Golf Course’s design on the 4th and 6th holes, Trent Jones Jr. was also thrilled to discovered limestone walls standing in place on the 14th and 15th holes of the back nine. These walls, dating back hundreds of years, hold a story. Why

were they built, what was their purpose, and how are they connected to the Mayan people of yesteryear? Wildlife is prevalent throughout the Riviera Maya Golf Course’s pristine surroundings. Exotic birds, clusters of butterflies, racoons, iguanas, crocodiles, and jaguars mingle seamlessly throughout the Paspalum covered property. The 15th hole, a prodigious 230-yard Par 3 from the black tees, is the address for a family of iguanas. As golfers navigate tee shots over a series of lakes and sand traps, the iguanas watch as attentively as the Sunday gallery at Augusta. FRONT NINE, BACK NINE, 19TH HOLE The personalities of the two nines are as distinct as the elements that were discovered and utilized during their design. Whereas the front nine draws raves for its legendary cenotes, the back nine provides a bit of relief with wider fairways and the mystical walls found on 14 and 15. What’s in the future for Romero’s course with its intoxicating blend of Trent Jones signature, 56 Upscale Living Magazine |

inhaling fairways, precise second shots, postcard par threes, and true rolling greens? “My dream is for the world to see this wonderful course in a PGA Tour event,” Romero said. Romero reminds that there is a special bonus if you check into their 19th hole. The Riviera Maya’s clubhouse is a gleaming white structure framed in glass. Their bar and grill features a special drink that Romero learned about from an American golfer he’s taught over the years. “The American golfer encouraged me to try a drink made of tomato juice and beer. Here in Akumal we call it Oyo Rojo. That’s Spanish for Red Eye,” Romero said with a smile. FEELS LIKE HOME After you’ve experienced underground springs, iguanas with a fondness for golf, and shotmaker occasions when you grabbed a five iron off the tee on a Par 4, it’s safe to say that the Riviera Maya is one for the memory books. Playing 18 holes in a lush environment amidst the Yucatan Jungle is hard to put into words for even a bilingual golfer.

MAY 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com

As you prepare to head back to the resort, you meet one of the Riviera Maya Golf Course’s original employees. Alfredo Rodriguez has been in love with golf since he started caddying at nine years old. Like Romero, this Manzanillo, Mexico native has found a new home at the Riviera Maya Golf Course. As you ponder how to articulate the feeling generating from this beautiful Akumal golf retreat, Rodriguez seems to read your mind. Rodriguez grins and says, “Mi casa es su casa.” That’s perfect. Rodriguez nailed what you were thinking. “My home is your home” says it all. https://www.rivieramaya-golfclub.com/ https://www.bahia-principe.com/en/resorts-inriviera-maya/resort-akumal/

GOMOTI PLA | By Heléne Ramackers

Positioned on the periphery of the Gomoti river system in Botswana, you will find Gomoti Plains Camp in the south eastern section of the Okavango Delta. A shining example of exclusivity and understated luxury, the enraptured traveler will revel in the offerings that are custom to Machaba Safaris.

F

ive little faces are staring back at us, perplexed by our admiration of them. One minute has passed and they all bound off in different directions, with only two resurfacing, tagging after mom. Having relinquished my heart to the bush the first time I set foot there a few years back, I relish nothing more than a sojourn to a destination that offers an all-inclusive package. With its landlocked beauty, the African country of Botswana offers something for everyone – adventure, luxury and the venture of traveling into a wilderness so remote that it seems almost impossible to have constructed anything in such a far-flung concession. Which is exactly what Machaba Safaris has achieved – the most pristine camps have been built in the most unlikely places in Africa – where you cannot even imagine that there would be something as simple as electricity, let alone a camp that runs like a well-oiled machine, built on the fringes of a floodplain. Journeying into Africa takes some planning and what makes the trip so much easier is having a direct flight to your destination. Since Airlink’s non-stop flights between Cape Town and Maun were introduced in 2016, it is evident from the number of passengers on board, kitted in their safari best, that Airlink is the airline to choose. What could be better than starting your week off by heading to the bush? Which is exactly what I did – no Monday blues for me! As we take off from Cape Town International Airport, we head in a northerly direction in the Embraer 135, flying over Table Mountain and Robben Island; icons in their own right. With a mere 2 hours, 30 minutes flying time between Cape Town and Maun, you are there before you can say ‘safari’!

After landing at Maun airport, a friendly customs official stamps my passport where-after I collect my suitcase and make my way to the charter company where I wait for my transfer to Gomoti Plains Camp. Our flight is up next and traveling om my own sometimes has its advantages, in this case, sitting right next to the pilot. Captain Lefa Ditlhabi from Mack Air ensures that I am strapped in and after his pre-flight safety check, we are ready to head into the big blue in the Cessna Grand Caravan. My guide, Mothusi Ketsholang, affectionately known as Mott, is waiting at the Gomoti airstrip to drive me to camp, which is a 45-minute meander with animal sightings along the way. The overwhelming odor of wild sage permeates the air. I am welcomed at camp and shown to my accommodation for the next three nights by Onalenna Rannoane. It is quite a walk to my tent and I make a mental note to request a vehicle transfer for the back and forth. I am staying in the honeymoon suite sans husband and imagine it can be quite romantic had I brought my significant other along. My tent with its cream color canvas walls is airy and spacious, with two three-quarter beds, a couch for seating, an indoor and outdoor shower, double vanities, an outside area for viewing the passing wildlife and the only difference to the other rooms – a beautiful freestanding outside bath. It is amazing what a difference the light color of the tented ‘walls’ make; giving 62 Upscale Living Magazine |

such a roomy feel whilst blending in with the surrounds of the grasslands. These bespoke tents take you back to the 1950’s with a contemporary modern twist and the added high-end cotton bedding adds the most luxurious addition to an already fantastic glamping experience. The grey bedding offsets the cream of the tents wonderfully and is in keeping with the brilliant Machaba Safaris design acumen. Back at the main area, I meet Andrew and Rhona Currell, management couple extraordinaire and their delightful daughter, Amy. With their background in lodge management and Rhona’s expertise in cuisine, they are the perfect fit for Gomoti Plains Camp. It is time for high tea before departing on my first game drive. Today’s spread consists of banana bread, cranberry slices, vegetable wraps, iced tea, iced coffee and ginger lemonade. Mott is waiting at the vehicle and as we depart, I enquire about the incredible lion sightings they have had of late. I’m disappointed when he tells me that the youngest cubs, estimated to be around seven weeks old, have not been seen for a few days as they were probably moved to a safer hiding place because of the presence of a dominant male. A giraffe is playing hide and seek at the base of a tree, perfectly camouflaged. We suddenly encounter a lioness and a male lion known as ‘nag-

merrie’ (nightmare). They are walking through the long grass and we spot the two sub-adult cubs, chasing mom. We lose sight of them and Mott decides to spend some quality time with his favorite animal, an elephant. All of a sudden, he gets a radio message to say that the lions have just made a kill. A kudu with the most stunning horns has met his fate and is being devoured bit by bit. The male is not letting the lioness, who we assume made the kill, anywhere near the carcass but tolerates the cubs to feed with him. We leave them to their seemingly delicious meal and drive back to camp as it’s almost time for dinner. I forego ‘freshening up’ and head straight for the campfire where pre-dinner drinks are being enjoyed by the other guests. Tonight, the most delicious food is on the menu and we all dine together at a long table, weather permitting. For starters, there is chicken liver pâté followed by the most tender made-to-your-taste beef medallions with julienne carrot parcels and cauliflower au gratin for main course. We had hardly started on the main meal when a torrential thunderstorm has everyone running inside for cover. Dessert is the delicious rooibos tea panna cotta concluded with coffee or tea. It doesn’t take much convincing for me to ask Mott to drive me to my room and he obliges like the gentleman he is. It is night time, which means the nocturnal animals are at play and you are not allowed to wander around unaccompanied. I unzip my tent and switch the light and

the fan on. I take in the night sounds and the frogs are croaking in a choir; I hear the distant sound of a hyena calling. With hot and cold running water, my shower with the Healing Earth products is reviving after which I climb into my comfortable bed. This is the silkiest bedding I’ve ever slept on and the pillow is, as Amy puts it so truthfully the following day, feels like ‘sleeping on a cloud’. Refreshed from a wonderful night’s sleep, Mott accompanies me on a walk to the main area as it starts getting light. It is overcast and as we leave for our game drive, it starts to rain. Not many animals will be around, I think out loud, when we stumble upon the sub-adult cubs still enjoying their kudu kill from the previous night. The female cub is eating in such a ladylike way that I jokingly say I need to bring her a knife and fork to dine with. She doesn’t seem to want to get her face dirty, takes little bites and she immediately starts grooming herself. Mott thinks he sees the shape of a lioness in the swampy area, but we can’t go near where she is with the risk of getting stuck. He picks up his binoculars, but it’s raining so hard we lose sight of her. Unexpectedly, she appears on the horizon and walks with vigor and purpose. We follow her and hear her calling. Calling for what we both wonder. Then we hear them. The sound of cubs answering! She found them! They are so tiny that we cannot even see them in the swampy grasslands. The reunion is so sweet between mom and cubs that we hope the other three cubs are safely stashed away somewhere. Brunch today is build-a-burger with fries, salads and fruit skewers. Before I know it, high tea is served, consisting of marble cake, savory tuna parcels 64 Upscale Living Magazine |

and chocolate lamingtons. Being the only vehicle that had encountered the lioness and her cubs in the morning, we are hopeful to lead the other guests to this special sighting. Mott finds her hiding place with great ease, but she is sitting under a dense tree and we can only just see her outline, interacting with the two cubs from earlier. We wait, patiently and get rewarded when she takes the cubs on a walkabout to hide them somewhere else. Their legs are so short that they are having a hard time keeping up with mom, but she stops every few meters to check that they are still with her. They are both completely exhausted and hungry from all the activity; we leave her in the swamp where the cubs are now nursing. Tonight, we dine on peppered mackerel for starters and for main course, individual kudu potjie with mash and broccoli, patti pans with roasted almonds and mocha Bavaria for dessert. The food at Gomoti Plains Camp is so delicious; it is clear that care and attention to detail is incorporated with each and every meal. Sunrise the next morning promises to be another incredible day as we make our way to where the mokoros are moored. Our poler, Kedidimetse Goitsemang, known as Bafana, is gliding us through the Okavango Delta’s channels and up ahead, an African fish eagle is making her presence known. This is the most serene way to see the riverine life and all its inhabitants. On our way back to camp, Mott thinks it suitable to ‘pop by’ where we last saw the lion cubs. We turn the corner and our jaws drop in unison. There they are – all five of them! Exclaims of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’ abound as we can-

not believe our luck – we were fearing the worst. It’s not long before they have all disappeared and mom appears, setting off with two of them in tow. I spend the remainder of the day in the main area where I watch impalas feeding on the grass close to camp and witness the pandemonium as a lioness has a stroll through camp in the middle of the day. On my last morning, I concentrate more on the birdlife that inhabit the plains. They are exquisite – a long-tailed paradise-whydah, an African harrierhawk, a woodland kingfisher, a spur-winged goose, some vulnerable wattled crane and a bateleur eagle to name a few. It is time to say goodbye; we take the winding drive to the airstrip for my charter flight to Maun airport. After landing at Maun International Airport, the journey back to Cape Town International Airport begins. We are scheduled to take off with our Airlink flight at 13:35. With all passengers seated, the captain starts the engines of the Embraer 135 and off we go, landing twenty minutes ahead of schedule, much to the delight of my family and all the passengers on board. https://machabasafaris.com/gomoti-plains/ Views expressed are the author’s own. *** Thank you to Wendy Rankin from Machaba Safaris for making my accommodation and local flight arrangements and to the very hospitable staff at Gomoti Plains Camp for hosting me.

After an extensive refurbishment, the rejuvenated The Ritz hotel in Sea Point, Cape Town flung open its doors at the end of 2017 to showcase its newly acquired glitz and glamor. Having lost its pizzazz as an establishment dating back to the early 1970s, the fading star that stands like a beacon in the Atlantic Seaboard could only benefit from a rebirth. “It’s a beautiful piece of local architecture that desperately needed a new lease on life. We had a very clear vision of what we wanted to create, and what Cape Town needed,” says Lisa Carey, marketing and PR manager for The Ritz. The Ritz Hotel Management Company recognized a gap in the market for an international-grade hotel that would marry a presentday design aesthetic with

world-class service. “We are not creating a quirky boutique property or a stiff fivestar hotel. We want to cater for that beautiful niche in the middle. We wanted to take luxury and design, and make it accessible,” Carey continues. The refurbishment of the 23-story building included a complete overhaul of the insulation, plumbing and lift shafts. The result is nothing short of astounding. Each and every room enjoys panoramic views of the city bowl and the Atlantic Ocean with the emphasis on accessible luxury with sensorial appeal. Imagine smoky mirrors, deep-buttoned velvet bucket chairs with moody color palettes and a sleek, modern look. This is only part of the allure of The Ritz – the

hotel’s flagship Top of the Ritz restaurant on the 23rd floor boasts the finest views in the city. The fare isn’t too bad either – think a modern take on the classic avocado ritz or beef sirloin, fondant potato and prego jus. On the 22nd floor, the Champagne Lounge is perfect for pre-dinner bubbles and sundowner cocktails, available daily from 4pm to 7pm. CASA restaurant on the first floor with its Miami South Beach glamor is the place to be seen for a Sunday brunch and the brasserie classics, sushi and wood-fired pizza will have you reclining on your daybed by the sparkling pool any chance you get. The once faded star is now shining brighter than ever before. www.theritz.co.za

MOMBO AND LITTLE MOMBO OKAVANGO DELTA BOTSWANA

The flagship camps of Wilderness Safaris, situated in the heart of the Okavango Delta, Mombo and Little Mombo have received a magnificent rebuild and welcomed visitors in January 2018. Rooted in an authentic bush-camp offering whilst ensuring that the original Mombo experience is retained, sustainability and luxury was not compromised whilst maintaining the eco-footprint that is the ethos of Wilderness Safaris. The privilege of witnessing the build of three generations of Mombo Camp is not lost on Wilderness Safaris, making it one of Africa’s most pristine wildlife locations. “We are extremely proud of the col-

lective efforts and vision of our various teams who have worked tirelessly to make this happen”, said Kim Nixon, Wilderness Safaris Botswana MD. “The camps have been built in such a way as to maintain the Mombo traditions and history stretching back nearly 30 years, yet remodelled to the highest and most innovative standards”. Known as the Rolls Royce of the Okavango Delta because of its high standards, the rebuild of Mombo takes the camp into the next 20 years, spearheaded by interior designer Caline Williams Wynn from Artichoke. “Space was key factor in creating the new design – each tented suite has its own spacious entrance, sitting room with

you are met by superior elegance, which intensifies as you make your way to your room. The conception of each of the hotel’s 42 rooms and suites took careful design, providing a unique experience and the intermingling of old world luxury and modern-day comforts.

Drisco brothers made their way from Maine, USA to establish a luxury hotel in the holy land, building the first hotel outside the walls of the old Jaffa (now Tel Aviv). Originally named The Jerusalem Hotel, it was known as the most prestigious hotel in the region between 1866 and 1940.

The Drisco presents a wonderful and diverse collection of rooms and suites, while the connected combination of certain rooms can offer a set of rooms and suites. For exclusivity and privacy, opt for the stand-alone Villa Drisco that comprises five rooms and one suite. Choose from a selection of rooms with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea or the inner piazza, the charms of Old Jaffa and the American-German Colony.

A lengthy reconstruction project began in 2006 and concluded in 2018, with focus on the restoration and preservation of its original architecture, the storytelling wall murals with priceless art value and its historic style. This reimagined hotel bears testament to two brothers, John and George Drisco, who arrived on the shores of Jaffa over a century and a half ago with a dream, yet never quite managed to see it through.

hen you are born on the outskirts of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe and spend your formative years in the bush, ingraining your passion for wildlife and conservation, you know you are destined for illustrious things. Upscale Living magazine spoke to Co-Founder and African Bush Camps CEO Beks Ndlovu about what is takes to make a difference in the already saturated safari scene in Africa. Eleven camps dotted over Africa – Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia in the short span of 12 years. That’s a wonderful achievement. What were the challenges you faced in the beginning? Raising, funding and managing it whilst you are on the ground, where you do everything can be extremely testing. It was a steep learning curve, but it

was exciting and results were evident almost right away. Like any new kid on the block, you need to prove yourself and knock on doors for business. This can be a tiring process and one where you have to build a thick skin and understand rejection. The industry as ever has always been competitive and the biggest challenge can be trying to win buyers over amidst other business relationships and years of loyalties that may exist with other camps. Talk us through the process of acquiring a camp – how do you decide on a site, the concession; how intricate is that process – surely it’s not just a ‘find and build’ concept? My first nine camps where all green fields. I identified areas that were special to me during my guiding days. I set out to tender for them and in some cases, propose to the authorities and land owners that there is an argument for sustainable utilization of those areas. I am a firm believer that anything that makes sense around economics, social and environmental will be considered. When I have identified the area, then 72 Upscale Living Magazine |

it’s been an experience where I’ve camped there. I could visualize what an epic guest experience would be, using the unique features or attributes of the area. It is an intricate process of designing a camp, taking into account your environmental foot print and how the guest experience can gel with the design so that you achieve a healthy balance between the two. The last two sites, Thorntree River Lodge in Zambia and Bumi Hills on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe found me, I didn’t find them. This happens after a number of camps where opportunities present themselves and thankfully I now have the luxury of exploring and often turning down opportunities that I know will not suit the brand.

it takes to create that special guest experience.

What sets your camps apart from others?

I am very hands on and involved in all aspects of the business; it’s important for me. I have good teams and a partner who manages the operations extremely well and we are able to cover each other.

Our locations are stunning, however this is something many camps can boast about too. The design of the guest experience; focusing on the guides and staff being the key performers makes our camps very special. I am thankful for my years of experience, running camps and guiding to be able to impart that understanding of what

MAY 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com

I know it’s like asking which of your children is your favorite, but I have to ask – do you have any favorite camps and why? Yes, I find myself thinking that each of the camps is the best at the time of staying, and this changes over the season. I have a very soft spot for the Zambezi Valley, Mana Pools. It’s more about the landscape and the area than it is about the camp. I don’t think there are many places as beautiful as Mana Pools, particularly the Kanga area. How hands-on are you?

What has attributed to your success story – starting out as a safari guide at the age of 18 to having a major business venture at age 29.

With the experience of being “organically grown” as we say, I learned all the aspects of safaris and what it takes to create the ultimate guest experience. I have been able to personally apply those learned things into the business. As a result of my experience, my staff and industry people around me trust me and this also means we have been able to attract good people. I always talk about being an employer of choice where the magic of the team draws people to want to be part of that magic. I have always sought the counsel of wise and experienced individuals who came before me, therefore I spend a lot of time listening to others that I have a huge respect for and this has helped me hugely. I have a saying that why pay school fees when it has already been paid for by others. Now, at the age of 41, what are the benefits you are reaping from such an incredible venture? For me it’s always been about creating a solid business that supports conservation and has a direct impact on the livelihoods of people around us. The rewards and benefits of having

this venture is seeing the result and the impact we have had in conservation and rural communities. It really is about creating a legacy that allows future generations to take stock and want to continue to do even more for our heritage. I read you still do private guiding on request? As I answer this question, I am flung back home after an incredible six days on safari in Mana Pools. It’s not very often I get to guide these days, but when I do, it’s like a re-birth of passion and excitement. I liken it to a little boy that rediscovers a room full of his favorite toys.

Could I call you a Safari Visionary? I am thankful that I am surrounded by partners that share the same values and visions that I have. Exciting happenings / camps in the future? I am excited about developing Nyamatusi Camp in Mana Pools that will open at the end of this year. It is going to be in the unspoiled Nyamatusi Wilderness of Mana Pools. www.africanbushcamps.com

JAMAICA

Laidback Luxury, Jamaican Style

INSIDE MELIÁ BRACO VILLAGE | BY SELENE NELSON

As the birthplace of reggae and rum, it’s no surprise that Jamaica is one of the go-to destinations for travellers seeking laidback luxury. While this tropical island certainly isn’t short of upscale hotels and resorts, few can rival the newly renovated Meliá Braco Village. Situated on Jamaica’s north coast, just 45 minutes from Montego Bay airport, this five-star all-inclusive resort offers guests a cool yet casual haven with all the creature comforts you could possibly want… and then some.

E

xploring the resort is a relaxing experience in itself; you can stroll along wide cobbled streets while admiring the traditional colonial-style architecture, listen to authentic Jamaican music as local Mento bands play, then pick up a fresh coconut or refreshing sugar cane juice to stave off the hot Caribbean sun. The bright, friendly staff can’t do enough for you, whether it’s suggesting the tastiest cocktail (the Mai Tais are exceptional!) or advising you about the resort’s activity schedule. Guest rooms and suites look out onto beautiful landscaped gardens or turquoise ocean vistas, and if you want a bit of me-time, just step through the French doors to your own private balcony. Inside the rooms, the neutral decor is contemporary and bright, with soft creams tones and natural wood accents. Every room boasts a coffee machine, smart TV, safe, bathroom amenities, comfy bathrobes and slippers and 24-hour room service. For an even more upmarket stay you can upgrade to the premium suites in THE LEVEL, where you’ll

enjoy direct beachfront access as well as entry to the VIP LEVEL Lounge, Golden Sands restaurant, and an exclusive pool. The private beach is obviously the resort’s main drawer, and it definitely doesn’t disappoint. The long, narrow stretch of pristine white sand is peppered with canopies where you can kick back and relax while staff fuss over you. The warm, azure waters are calm and great for kids, and if you want to get a bit more active you can snorkel, sail or canoe. If you’d prefer to sip a cocktail while enjoying your dip, head to one of the two swimming pools, both of which have covered swim-up bars. Even from the beach the smell of jerk cooking seems to float on the breeze, and if it stirs up hunger pangs then you’re in luck. There are five onsite restaurants, so whatever cuisine you’re into, there’s something for everyone. Feast on traditional Caribbean food at the beach-facing O’Grille, or for Japanese, Chinese and Peruvian fusion, head to Nikkei Restaurant. The Italian dishes at Rasta Pasta will

please even the fussiest of eaters, and for something a little fancier, 876 Prime Steakhouse offers diners some romantic intimacy. At the poolside Market Place, breakfast is a relaxed affair; sipping coffee while watching the waves is an idyllic way to start the day. For those seeking a more active experience – or for guests travelling with kids – there’s also a basketball court, tennis court, football pitch, children’s playground, obstacle course and 24hour fitness centre. If you have to – gasp! – work 76 Upscale Living Magazine |

while on vacation, there’s a business centre and WiFi throughout the resort… although it would be a shame to interrupt your blissful experience with real-life duties. The YHI Spa can help ease you back into holiday mode: here you can indulge yourself with a range of heavenly treatments like firming facials, body scrubs or indulgent massages. While Meliá Braco Village has everything you could possibly want (and more), if you’re looking to get out and explore the location is hard to

beat. Just a short drive away from jungle-cloaked mountains, thundering waterfalls and lively, ramshackle towns, here you can easily discover the delights of Jamaica’s unique laid-back culture and still be back in time for cocktail hour. This is a resort that’s as refined as it is relaxing, and it offers a quiet refuge away from the hustle and bustle. Even if you think you don’t do all-inclusive, Meliá Braco Village will change your mind.

NAPA VALLEY | BY TRACY BEARD

Last October, the media flooded the news with coverage of raging fires roaring through Napa Valley. Many people around the world watched the repeated footage and believed that nothing remained of the picturesque Valley. However, misfortune has a way of building or breaking people. Locals and outsiders came to the rescue, and today Napa Valley remains magnificent and magical despite the flames.

I

n February 2018, following the fire, I spent a week in Napa Valley. As I traversed the area looking for signs of devastation, they were surprisingly challenging to locate. I learned from locals that after the disaster, communities banned together, cleanup crews removed the rubble, contractors started new construction, and only a few months later the bright colors of spring blanketed the Valley. New growth camouflaged black scars left from the vicious flames, and the Valley stands vibrant and alive ready for visitors.

MEADOWOOD NAPA VALLEY

Napa Valley offers numerous resorts, B & Bs, hotels, restaurants, and wineries. The Meadowood Napa Valley, a luxury resort, is ideally located in St. Helena, California, and makes the perfect base for exploring the Valley. Delicious food is synonymous with the area, and no trip here is complete without exploring a few wineries. Angèle Restaurant & Bar in Napa and Redd Wood in Yountville are essential destinations for great food. For a unique and tasty wine experience tour Amici Cellars in Calistoga and Hourglass Wine Company Inc. in St. Helena.

Meadowood Napa Valley unfolds along the vast hillside and offers an assortment of accommodations. My childhood dreams were brought to life when I spent two nights in a one of the luxury Treeline suites. Lounging on the California King bed, I gazed out the windows high above the ground surrounded by tree branches and spring leaves that fluttered in the wind.

80 Upscale Living Magazine |

My cozy yet opulent suite, decorated in cottage style, extended outside onto a white-washed deck overlooking the fairway where I spent

the evenings with a glass of wine in hand and the mornings with a cup of steaming coffee. The abundance of amenities, which included a flat-screen TV, coffee machine, refrigerator, and fully stocked bar, superbly equipped my temporary home. Guests at Meadowood often choose to participate in one of the onsite activities like golf, tennis, croquet, swimming, hiking, or a spa treatment. Jennifer Chiesa, Director of Public Relations, excitedly reports, “Forbes Travel Guide has just unveiled its annual Star Rating list, naming Meadowood as a Forbes Travel

Guide 15-Star recipient with the Hotel, The Restaurant and Meadowood Spa each receiving the Five-Star Rating! The estate is now one of only 13 hotels in the world to have all three Five-Star designations at the same property.” THE RESTAURANT AT MEADOWOOD Fabulous dining is essential to any trip, and The Grill overlooking the golf course offers scrumptious options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. The Restaurant at Meadowood, a Michelin-star establishment under the command of Chef Christopher Kostow, serves elevated Napa Valley cuisine in the evenings. MEADOWOOD SPA Enticed by Meadowood’s spa reputation, I booked an appointment. As I stepped out into the women’s relaxation garden, I found myself letting go of any stressful thoughts. I sat next to the mineral soaking pool and dangled my feet into the water like a child.

Soon I was roused and taken to my private treatment room where I received a massage that lulled me to sleep. The all-suite spa design offers privacy, and each suite features a steam/sauna room, private bathroom, and treatment room. Jennifer says, “In addition to the many culinary and wellness amenities available, we first and foremost want our guests to feel well taken care of, as if in their own home away from home. Just as everyone is unique, we strive to create the best personalized experiences for their stay.” ANGÈLE RESTAURANT & BAR Napa Valley boasts excellent restaurants. Standing the test of time for over 20 years, Angèle Restaurant & Bar is tantamount to visiting a magnificent bistro in France. As I entered this culinary gem next to the river, I immediately felt transported to my favorite city in the world, Paris. Seated by the window, watching pedestrians stroll alongside the river, I witnessed the sun going down as I savored a dish

of tasty escargot tucked away in puff pastry with garlic, parsley, and a beurre blanc sauce. This sophisticated appetizer preceded a rich and hearty beef bourguignon with buttered noodles. I finished with a delectable butterscotch bread pudding with bourbon ice cream. It was so flavorful and enticing that two ladies from a neighboring table volunteered to join me in polishing off the dish. Proprietor Bettina Rouas says, “Owning Angèle is about my love for food, wine, and taking care of people. My goal is for our customers to feel like they just had a quick trip to France. I hope they can’t wait to return.” REDD WOOD Redd Wood, a Yountville pizza restaurant, offers a contemporary version of Wine Country cuisine. This vibrant restaurant serves casual upscale fare with bold flavors and beautiful colors. Chef de Cuisine Jake Kossman works with Richard Reddington, executive chef and owner, to keep the menu exciting and seasonal. I began lunch with a cold crisp Caesar salad and moved on to a bucatini pasta with authentic Italian bolognese sauce. I finished with an extraordinary scoop of sweet and salty date and bacon ice cream. Pizza is a staple at the restau82 Upscale Living Magazine |

rant, and the mushroom pizza with béchamel is a repeat winner. Creativity abounds at the bar, and the mixologist conjures up stunning cocktails. AMICI CELLARS Wineries litter the main roads; but for a more intimate experience, book an appointment at Amici Cellars owned by Robert Shepard and John Harris, long-term friends for over 25 years. Melissa Devore, Executive Vice President, says, “Amici Cellars has no curfew and no limits, and we want to be approachable to everyone at different price points.” John talked about the different cooperages, or barrels. He said, “We use mostly French, 98%, but we have tried some Hungarian barrels. We have found that different cooperages work better with some vineyards than others.” Robert says, “Oak is like a spice rack. Different forests and barrel companies produce different flavors and components in the wine, and that’s where the winemaking team comes in to do their magic.” Amici offers several wines. The entry-level brand “No Curfew” is great for what I would consider the “Tuesday night wine,” and the middle-level brand “Olema” is moderately

MAY 2018 www.upscalelivingmag.com

priced. Finally, the elegant premium wines listed under the brand “Amici” are those I would have to reserve for special occasions. HOURGLASS WINE COMPANY Hourglass Wine Company is made up of a winery, two vineyards, and a collection of estate wines. Owners Jeff and Carolyn Smith worked alongside Napa architect Ollie Lundberg to design a winery where they could produce cutting-edge wines. Ollie’s final design for the winery came to him in a dream. Inspired by nature and the principles of modernism, the team worked together to carve the new winery into the hillside. Hourglass wines are in high demand, and the uniquely stunning winery is worth a visit. VICTORIOUS NAPA Napa Valley has so much to offer visitors. The collaborative efforts of those living in the Valley led to the quick recovery of the community. Napa stands glorious and victorious after fighting the flames; but we need to remember that even though it is challenging to find evidence of the fires, there are those still recovering from severe losses.

We are taken to our accommodation for the next three nights, The Chapel, a stand-alone villa on the northern fringes of Santorini’s main villa. Our host, Calistro Boane, shows us around our impressive dwelling; a two-bedroom villa with a lounge area, dining section, kitchen, patio and rim-flow pool. A table for three is set up outside on the patio and with uninterrupted sea views, you might forget to eat. Our chef, Joao Mufume is whipping up something extraordinary for lunch – cucumber and plain yoghurt soup, fish cakes with roasted vegetables and tartar sauce and Amarula panna cotta with berry compote for dessert. My recliner is beckoning and I opt to have my dessert served poolside whilst drinking in the vistas of the ocean. 86 Upscale Living Magazine |

We are welcomed with song, drums and dance by members of the Santorini family.
