Theresa Roemer A Texan Philanthropist

She’s the CEO of her self-titled company Theresa Roemer, LLC and a small business owner who specializes in business philanthropy, but there is more to this Houston, Texas lady than all that. In addition to her hardworking ethos, she is a partner in Roemer Oil, and most women would die for her world-famous closet. Roemer’s three-story closet included 3,000-square-feet and was built to her specifications taking six months to finish the project. Born and raised on a farm in Nebraska, with a number of sisters and brothers, Roemer later moved to Wyoming and California. By 2002, she moved to Texas at which time she began her “closet” passion. She admits, “ Donna Karen, Tom Ford, and Michael Kors are just a few of my favorite designers. For shoes, it’s Christian Louboutin, Chanel, and Alexander McQueen.” Roemer’s closet is organized by designer first and then by color, and she says there is also a very detailed inventory system that keeps her stylist organized too. As for her go-to pieces she answers “There are too many favorites to list, it’s impossible to pick just one.” With her self-described California chic style though, she does believe, the best fashion statement piece a woman can own is her accessories. “Accessories can take an outfit to the next level,” Roemer says. “Sometimes it’s a piece of jewelry, sometimes, it a pair of shoes, and the right purse can make any outfit stand out. When in doubt--accessorize.” Her top five fashion picks a woman should own include, “ Every woman needs basic black pants, a suit jacket, classic black pumps, a versatile scarf, and one piece of statement jewelry. Classic pieces that are interchangeable are the key to any wardrobe; this was the idea behind my new apparel line, Theresa Roemer True and Real.” The most recent addition to her closet is a pair of over the knee Tom Ford boots that she says “I can’t wait to wear. Every season I go through my closet and rotate out items for donation. I usually donate clothing I no longer wear to my local Dress For Success.” When asked for a number of how many shoes and purses her inventory holds she replies, “I am not sure of the exact number. Let’s just say that it’s enough to stock a three-story closet.” However, even though she moves things in and out she also says there are pieces she will never tire of as well. 11 Upscale Living Magazine |

FASHION “Timeless pieces are a must for every woman’s closet,” she explains. “If it is classic, you will never tire of it. I have a classic Tom Ford black cocktail dress, a Chanel jacket, and a Michael Kors dress; all are over ten years old. Regardless of styles that come and go, classic pieces made well will retain their value.” A look around Roemer’s closet will remind you of a Neiman Marcus showroom, and the upscale department store was the inspiration for the closet’s design. The effect is created with a white and gray tone color scheme and all white cabinetry surrounding the room. The floor on the first and third level is white porcelain, and the second floor has plush gray carpeting. There is also a champagne bar with white leather stools and the nearby seating area is pink and gray. In an effort to combine her sense of style with her passion for philanthropy, Roemer is currently pursuing a partnership with Dress for Success. As an expert in business philanthropy, Roemer also regularly works with major motion pictures, television studios, corporations and high profile brands to expand their philanthropic reach to raise millions of dollars through business charity events. Her bio says she consults with organizations such as LVMH to understand their business goals with fundraising, then turns those objectives into a reality with her ability to produce high-impact business fundraising events. Roemer got into business philanthropy as it has always been a part of her childhood. At the time, she didn’t know it, but she now looks back and realizes she was always practicing it. Her publicist notes that Roemer was a sickly child suffering from rheumatic fever and its residual effects. As a result, she was often in and out of hospitals. Her first philanthropic act occurred when she was leaving the hospital with her mother and asked if she could leave a dollar to help all the other sick kids. As she grew older Roemer learned about fundraisers during her time as a Girl Scout. As a teen, she became more and more interested in giving back and volunteered her free time as a Candy Striper at a local hospital. As an adult, she now takes pride in all her philanthropic ventures and especially in teaching other business owners how to do the same. She stresses that philanthropy comes in many forms, not just in giving money “Giving of your time and sweat equity is as valuable as giving money,” she says. “If a business is new and the funds aren’t available, you can still be philanthropic.” Roemer says that some of her proudest moments in philanthropy include the amazing work ethic that was instilled in her while being raised on a ranch. She learned hard work, early hours and many responsibilities at a young age. Through this experience, she learned what she believes makes her successful today. In fact, looking back, Roemer says she is extremely proud of the way she learned to manage her time and take her work seriously early on in life. As for what she is working on now, there are her ongoing projects with the American Heart Association, which take priority. She has a seat on the Texas Children’s Hospital Advisory Board and is on the Board of Directors for Child Legacy International. In addition, Roemer is currently planning an event for the Holly Rose Foundation and a separate event to benefit an oncology camp through Kids Need More. An example of achieving success despite less than favorable circumstances, Roemer proves that a person can live the life they dream. After all, she came from growing up a sickly child on a farm with little means to a self-made entrepreneur with several small businesses and the ability to give back. Watch for her apparel line, Theresa Roemer True and Real, debuting at fashion shows and trunk shows around the Houston area. | BY RITA COOK | PHOTOS COURTESY OF BLOG. From Investment Banking to Women’s Fashion & Interior Design

After 20 years as an investment banker, Landria Onkka made a radical change. She switched her focus from private equity to Women’s Fashion and Interior Design. Ms. Onkka was kind enough to share her journey and its reward with Upscale Living Magazine. “People usually don’t make big moves in their life until there is a tipping point or major shift. Mine was the death of both my parents and my beloved Jack Russell all in a short period. As I was going through my parents’ home, I read notes and diaries that reflected unfulfilled dreams. Although I have lived a full, exciting life as a model, pro cheerleader, writer, investment banker, worked on Capitol Hill, traveled and lived overseas, I felt that there was more to achieve. So, when I returned to Atlanta, I published that book that I had been writing for two years (The Rooftop Christmas Tree available on Amazon.com and movie releasing in 2015). In conjunction, I launched the business that I was always so passionate about, and it no longer included finance.” “My clients are super achievers. I can relate. While running my investment banking business and traveling, I had little time to focus on myself or my home. I used to shop for clothes and accessories in New York as I was hoofing it to my next meeting. I would put on my tennis shoes and hit the stores on the way, get back into my heels, and get to my next appointment. In the evenings, I was at dinner meetings or back on a plane. I would throw work or charity related parties for over 100 people at my home that included pro athletes, entertainers, and prominent entrepreneurs. The house and the event needed to be perfect. It was a lot to take on, but I loved doing all of it. Not everyone feels that way.” Park Avenue Group LLC provides high-end women’s accessories with a twist. “I wanted to do something unique and specialized. People

that I have known throughout my investment banking career are now my clients – business owners, Wall Street executives, investors, entrepreneurs, athletes, entertainers, and high net worth families. They value trusted relationships, loyalty and personalized, impeccable service. My clients can simply go online to make purchases at www. parkavenuegroupllc.com or utilize Park Avenue Group’s free Private Shopper service. I will personally assist in suggesting or creating a special accessory, working directly with my designers. In addition, we track special dates for our gentlemen clients, provide a reminder and gift selection. I will provide an item from my inventory, or have a piece specially designed whether it is a purse, necklace, ring, bracelet, belt or another request. With an approval from the client, that gift is beautifully wrapped and sent to its happy recipient. Our clients, such as our NASCAR teams and pro athletes, travel often and with a text or phone call request, I will have a gift waiting for a special gal at a specified destination. I handle the details, free of charge, and clients can put their Assistants to better use and maintain privacy. Another private service that Park Avenue Group provides is ‘Shop Park Avenue,’ a shopping event that brings our merchandise to homes, businesses, events, or private parties. It is another service free of charge that my clients can use privately or to complement an event, including non-profits where I donate a portion of the proceeds. Perhaps a private gal party is in order. I reward the hostess with gifts from my collection.” Park Avenue Group LLC provides interior design to the Southeast and Women’s Accessories and gifts throughout the U.S. and overseas. www.parkavenuegroupllc.com . Grisogono Whether it is dreaming up a pair of sumptuous Anelli earrings dripping with black diamonds or the Allegra timepiece featuring white gold cords, encrusted with baguette-cut white diamonds and Santa Claus red leather strap, atelier de Grisogono has always celebrated dramatic jewels with avant-garde designs. Fawaz Gruosi, founder and creative force of de Grisogono, never fails to find fresh inspiration to intrigue connoisseurs of jewellery. “The heart of our design is where the beauty of each creation takes precedence over any pre-defined boundaries,” Gruosi says. High jewellery and Objets d’art that more than hint at opulence take centrestage at de Grisogono whilst Gruosi and his ateliers continue to break the boundaries of convention with a passion for perfection and love for exotic combination of colours. 1 | By Smitha Sadanandan

The oldest watchmaking manufacturer, with an uninterrupted history since its foundation in 1755, is opening its first Latin American boutique in Sao Paulo, Brazil. This is the brand’s 47th boutique worldwide. The new boutique, located at the prestigious Shopping Cidade Jardim, demonstrates another step forward in the manufacture’s worldwide expansion. Vacheron Constantin’s decision to open its first Latin American Boutique in Brazil follows a historical pattern, as the brand has been present in Brazil for almost 180 years. The Maison first established a commercial presence in Rio de Janeiro by opening an official representative in 1835. Vacheron Constantin archives indicate that the same year, 16 watches were sent to our first correspondent in Brazil. Then in 1907, some 180 Vacheron Constantin Chronomètre Royal were sold to Brazilian customers, responding to the demand of the market in terms of quality and solidity. The warm and intimate 113 square meters space is the ideal place to welcome the watch collectors and connoisseurs. The interior design of the boutique uses elegant materials, such as wood, bronze and leather, creating a refined and luxurious environment, which perfectly aligns with the spirit of the brand. Conveniently located in the boutique, a Vacheron Constantin qualified watchmaker offers various after-sales services. Through this innovative interaction the brand establishes brand loyalty and saves the time of the repair. 1

Bogh Art Jewelry

When members of a family such as the Boghossian, share a love of gemstones, rare and beautiful things are bound to happen. And thus was born Bogh-Art. In the refined world of high jewellery, Swiss high-jeweller Bogh-Art has carved a niche for itself since its inception in 2007. “Bogh-Art reflects our desire to bring something new to the world of gems: innovative creations that would stretch the limits of jewellery design,” says Albert Boghossian, founder and CEO. With the uniqueness of materials and considerable time that goes into putting each piece together, Bogh-Art has taken a huge step on the path of elegance and creativity. “Our vision is rooted in tradition but looking to the future with new materials and new techniques that will do justice to the beauty of the gem we use, inspiring new emotions,” says Albert. The brand’s signature style incorporates neckpieces, cuffs, rings encrusted with the finest diamonds and rare gemstones. “One of the house’s sources of inspiration is the architecture of the Taj Mahal (in India). We enjoy merging cultures, taking elements of Islamic architecture, Arabic art, Persian pottery or Mughal artefacts to create our pieces. We look to the East for motifs and shapes yet use these designs in a European aesthetic. We breathe life into traditions lost, making the ‘Art of Inlay’ our signature style,” he adds, underscoring the brand’s urge to be fiercely creative. Take the newest in Bogh-Art’s ring collection, which uses the ancient art of inlay to bring together a marquise-cut diamond and black mother of pearl hemmed in with sparkling diamonds, or the sumptuous Colombian emerald and diamonds parure jewellery – these jewels all bear the Bogh-Art trademark of originality. The skill and passion for creativity is reflected in the Ceylan sapphires, diamonds and Keshi salt-water pearls that add the right touch of opulence to the fluid bracelet and the Toi et Moi (You and Me) earrings that combine precious stones, diamonds, natural pearls in contrasting colours, giving more character, adding just a hint of playfulness. New material Titanium and carbon fibre jewellery forms the corolla of Bogh-Art’s high craft collection: “At the heart of Bogh-Art, is the unrelenting determination to push further the boundaries of jewellery design.” This resolute approach led the team to spend time researching and developing a new material that could be both feminine and modern. “The ground-breaking use of Titanium lends the younger, more accessible pieces an exceptional lightness and transparency. It also demonstrates our commitment to jewellery design and innovation,” says Albert. The Titanium fibre butterfly earrings in white gold, diamond and Titanium fibre campanella earrings, flower earrings, brooches, carbon bangles and earrings evoke a touch of refinement. Meanwhile, the quest to discover the most appealing precious stones and best ways to mount them pose a never ending challenge for Bogh-Art, making each jewel a collector’s piece. “One of my personal favourites is a gem pear-shaped flawless emerald ring of 10.23 carats. It has no indication of clarity enhancement, which makes it an exceptional stone, a true treasure, a collector’s dream,” says Roberto Boghossian, Managing Director, reinforcing the brand’s quiet excellence and its one-of-a-kind pieces. 1 Bogh-Art has stores and showrooms in Geneva, London, Hong Kong and Brussels. WOLSEY’S AUTUMN/WINTER 2014 COLLECTION “History in the Making”

Upscale Living Magazine’s Damon M. Banks was able to gain a behindthe-scenes look at the new collection being launched this fall by a brand that has been revolutionizing the clothing industry since 1755. For those familiar with not only the quality of craftsmanship put into each article of clothing produced by Wolsey, but also the rich history this brand has within the world of fashion, enthusiasm has been building with the re-launch of its historic Sportsman line finally happening this season. Not only was Wolsey involved with the first steam powered factories in 1859, but in 1935 Wolsey was also appointed a Royal Warrant as Hosiery Manufacturers to his Majesty King George V, which is an honor still held with today’s monarchy. For more than two centuries, this brand has proven themselves time and time again. To only enhance the expectations and level of excitement for this re-launch, Wolsey has appointed Johan Lindeberg as the Golf Brand Ambassador. As founder of the J.Lindeberg brand, he is known as a visionary who has accurately bridged fashion and functionality with his brand over the years. Now, together with Wolsey, Lindberg will help support the direction of the Sportsman line; bringing together his forward-thinking vision with the longtime integrity of the Wolsey brand, for what seems to be the perfect collaboration. “We’re continuing to evolve by creating a distinctive line that leverages our unrivalled heritage and incorporates leading-edge fabrics,” said Louis Wolcott, Global Golf Brand Director. There is a strong focus on breath-

able, waterproof and multi-layered outerwear, along with performance merino polo’s, base layers, knitwear and pants. To make the most of today’s technology, many of the pieces rely on Invista THERMOCOOL technology, which regulates the body temperature to ensure the sportswear is “fit for purpose.” The new line showcases a fit that is more middle ground than slim, while still maintaining that artistic flair and design artistry associated with Lindeberg. Wolsey is already putting together a team of pioneers that champion the company’s spirit of adventure, and embody the brand aesthetic. Among the newest additions are European Tour players Robert Rock, Tom Lewis and James Heath. These new “faces” of Wolsey are sure to continue being a driving force behind this exciting re-launch of the Sportsman line. “It’s time for a more chic, sophisticated look in golf,” commented Johan Lindeberg. With the launch of this new collection including such a dynamic variety of items, there’s something for everyone. It’s the small details such as the intricate stitching or unique pockets that stack up to make such a positive overall impact in the designs and functionality of each garment and accessory. Not only is the collection innovative and unique, but the overall quality and attention to detail is simply unparalleled. 1 | BY DAMON M. BANKS

Many people are dissatisfied with their personal appearance for a variety of reasons. With this in mind, Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso has opened The Institute of Advanced Body Sculpting in Aventura, Florida. Created specifically to focus on cellulite reduction, tummy tucks, liposuction, Brazilian Butt Lifts, and other surgical and nonsurgical procedures, The Institute helps patients achieve their desired body image through optimizing their physical appearance. Throughout his career as a board certified plastic surgeon, Dr. LaGrasso has been inspired to excel at his craft. Combining his natural talent and discerning eye with years of education and experience, Dr. LaGrasso is committed to maximizing results. With practices in Florida, New York, and California, he is one of the world’s premier surgeons specializing in improving the body aesthetic. As one of the pioneers of various VASER (Vibration Amplification of Sound Energy at Resonance) techniques, Dr. LaGrasso remains on the forefront of using this advanced technology to sculpt and enhance physical appearance. VASER delivers energy in the form of ultrasonic waves that liquefy targeted fat cells without damaging surrounding muscle tissue. A minimally invasive small tube is inserted to remove the liquefied fat thereby creating a more attractive look. As an added benefit, VASER has reduced recovery periods when compared to more traditional procedures. VASER can help specific problem areas or be part of a full body transformation depending on the needs of the patient. VASERsmooth addresses cellulite removal with better, longer lasting results than other systems. VASERlipo offers gentle and effective precision body contouring that cannot be achieved with traditional liposuction techniques. VASER Hi Definition Liposuction is used to sculpt target areas to create and maintain an athletic appearance of various muscle groups such as the abdomen, thighs, and chest. At the Institute of Advanced Body Sculpting, Dr. LaGrasso also recognizes that healthy living plays an exceptionally important role in maintaining physical beauty and well-being. As a proponent of nutrition and positive lifestyle choices, he takes the time to educate and encourage his patients to live long and productive lives. Realizing that no two cases are alike and different people have different goals, Dr. LaGrasso uses an individual approach tailored to those distinctive needs.

Beauty is a lifestyle; it cannot be

taken for granted. It requires dedication and maintenance. Beauty is like an orchid, it requires the necessary watering, sun and care, but the happiness of a beautiful flower is enduring.” —Dr. Jeffrey LaGrasso.

COMBINING Legacy & Luxury

CORINTHIA HOTEL LONDON

27 Upscale Living Magazine |

Issue 34

TRAVEL + LEISURE

In an interview for Upscale Living Magazine, I spoke with Renaud Gregoire, General Manager of the Corinthia Hotel London. We discussed the rich history of the building, the kinds of accommodations available with specific attention to the Whitehall Penthouse, tell-tale signs of the Corinthia brand, their award-winning spa, and his top 5 tips to enjoying both the hotel and the city of London.

Tell me a little bit about the Corinthia Hotel London, the history of the building, and its significance to travelers today. Corinthia Hotel London is one of London’s finest 5-star luxury hotels and is housed within a building that has stood on Whitehall Place for over a century. The grand Victorian building has three distinct phases to its 125-year-old history. Dating from 1885, the building spent fifty years as the prestigious Hôtel Métropole known for its Midnight Follies and parties before it was taken over by the Government in 1936 and used as Ministry of Defence offices. Since 2008 the building has undergone a meticulous restoration to return it to its original function and former glory as Corinthia Hotel London. Having opened in April 2011, we have seen a huge change in the luxury travel market. The expectations of our guests are growing increasingly and we are adapting our services to the different types of cultures visiting the hotel. Shortly after the hotel opened in April 2011, we launched our seven individual penthouses and these have dramatically raised the standard of luxury across London. What kind of penthouses are available at the Corinthia London? We have 294 rooms, of which 43 are suites and 7 are penthouses. The penthouses are built within the soaring turrets and each has its distinct style and unique hand-crafted bespoke finishes and furniture. The seven penthouses are each named after different personalities typically found in London– The Royal, The Hamilton, The Musicians, The Writers, The Whitehall, The Actors, and The Explorers. Designed by GA Design

TRAVEL + LEISURE

International, the penthouses evoke an elegant residential style, all with expansive outside terraces complete with exceptional and phenomenal views across the capital. With regard to the Whitehall Penthouse, what makes this particular residence unique in terms of design, furnishings and architecture? At 1,745 sq ft, the Whitehall Penthouse has a private internal lift that leads to the retreat designed for guests who habitually wield power and influence. The penthouse is inspired by Sir Winston Churchill, who on Armistice Day 1918 stood at the window of the building, then used as his own Ministerial office, watching the crowds celebrate below. With the dark oak lime-washed paneling and red leather-paneled bookshelves, the living room and study have the genteel elegance of a refined gentlemen’s club, albeit with light contemporary touches. On the upper turreted floor, the king-sized bed stands on a sumptuous rug surrounded by dark stained oak with a light lime wash. Outside, on the private terrace with views towards Whitehall and Big Ben, a giant chess set provides diversion from the affairs of state or business.

What are some of the signature, tell-signs that this property wholeheartedly represents the Corinthia brand? I think the design of the hotel is definitely one of the first things you notice when you think of Corinthia London. We have this grand piece of architecture that has been given a modern twist. There is a huge amount of attention to detail that has gone into it from the flowers in the public areas that change weekly to the imprint of the leaves from the trees on Northumberland Avenue on the lift doors. This attention to detail is also noticeable in the service and the incredibly personal and individual approach that we take. In terms of amenities on-site and other guest services, what sets the Corinthia London apart? We are incredibly lucky to have ESPA Life at Corinthia which is one of the top spas in London. We have just been awarded the Conde Nast Traveller’s Readers award for the ‘Best UK Hotel Spa’. The spa looks at complementary and alternative medicine as well as an array of fitness, soft tissue therapy and grooming services. The highly specialised ESPA 29 Upscale Living Magazine |

TRAVEL + LEISURE Life team work together on each individual to create tangible and visible wellness results. In terms on in room amenities all rooms come with a Nespresso machine, ESPA products across our hotels, and the best mattresses in the business by Hypnos, in fact they are so good the Queen endorses them ‘by Royal Appointment’. Each one is handmade and contains natural fillings like wool, cotton, cashmere, and silk to regulate body temperature. Finally I think it is worth mentioning our ‘Crafty Concierge’ offering. This is aimed at teenagers travelling with their parents who want to experience an ‘off-the-beaten’ track activity. This could be anything from ‘ Small Car, Big City’ mini coopers tour around London or the ‘Thames Jet’ speed boat. What are your top 5 tips to newcomers on how best to enjoy their stay, both at the hotel and in the surrounding area? Explore the area—we are within walking distance of about 50 different theatres and cultural experiences (Houses of Parliament, National Gallery, English National Ballet). Make sure you try the spa, ESPA Life at Corinthia, and have a 50min personalized massage to get you back on track after a long flight. Also, afternoon tea under the soaring ‘Full Moon’ chandelier in the Lobby Lounge or dine al fresco if the weather is good. Definitely try a Bubblegum Martini whilst listing to live music in Bassoon bar. And finally, follow the Royal Park trail (St James’, Green Park, Hyde Park, and Kensington Gardens) and watch the Changing of the Guard starting at 11.15am at Buckingham Palace. | By Rahim B. Lori Morris DESIGNS

Interior design is a unique art form that most people think of as a service. However, when you have a designer like Lori Morris, you realize the talent that lies in forming a muse from not only the art world’s vast resources, but also a client’s needs and desire. Upscale Living had the pleasure of hearing directly from Morris on the true artistry of interior design and what sets her company above the rest.

Since you do have such a diverse design style that ranges from modern to neoclassical, what makes a Lori Morris design identifiable? Each of my spaces is very unique but what remains consistent are the luxurious materials and attention to detail that you see in every home or commercial space. Another identifiable element of my spaces is custom furniture. While I will purchase antique pieces for my projects, most of the furniture in my designs are custom made. I really enjoy designing custom pieces, and it helps my vision come to life. Even though you use your clients’ input/personality as your design muse, what is your favorite “go to” style of which nearly everyone is comfortable? All of my clients, and their wants and needs, are so different and unique, so it’s hard to define one style that most people are comfortable with, however, one thing all my clients are comfortable with is luxury. My best projects are where I have complete artistic freedom. Personally, I love the more Parisian-inspired neoclassical designs. We worked on a residence at the Four Seasons where the master bathroom grout is made of Swarovski crystals, and the marble fireplaces were handcrafted in India. It is definitely one of my most cherished spaces. With certain designers, clients are confined to a particular style but with my company, we offer limitless design creativity. I’ve done multiple homes for particular clients, and it is interesting to see how their style evolves over time.

HOME DECOR + ARCHITECTURE What sets your concierge service apart from others in the industry? We take care of everything for our clients, including moving their clothes and color curating their closet. I also travel around the world to places like London and Paris, either with my clients or on my own, to get inspiration and purchase antiques and art. We also house a number of very rare finishes in our office, for example, textiles, stones, hardware and custom designed pieces. It is a one-stop shop where clients can come in and look at all the options in one place. We provide an unmatched experience in the industry. I also have an incredible team of project managers and designers that work closely with the client from beginning to end. What does the future look like for your company? Lori Morris Design was established in 1987, and it has been an amazing 27 years. As the company continues to develop, I see our future full of new and exciting projects. Taking on projects that are unique for an interior design but also combine my love for fashion and art. For example, doing an installation for a show at Paris Fashion Week would be amazing. When you or your team meets with a new client what is the first question, you ask? We always ask our new potential clients “what feeling do you want to achieve when the house is complete?” Keywords that usually come to mind are tranquility, zen, opulent elegance, contemporary sleek, slick, sexy, soft and warm, etc. When trying to get an understanding of what this feeling is, we might also ask “Is there a place that gives you a great feeling that you want us to emulate?” We will also ask what color palette they prefer and if there is a specific budget or timeline of which we need to be sensitive. From there, we can orchestrate the design. Is there any art movement that you haven’t pulled from for inspiration, but hope to? I’ve pulled from many art movements over the years. In fact, purchasing and placing art is one of my favorite parts of the job but I have a special affinity for modern art. That being said; I will continue to pull from all movements that stamp my signature style. It is clear that Lori Morris is not just a detailed organizer with an eye for great design. She is truly an artist who understands how to utilize every resource to her advantage whether it be for inspiration, craft, customization, creation or service. Lori Morris is a true artist. | By Carly Drake | Photos Courtesy of Lori Morris Design

AUTOMOBILE

2015 Cadillac Escalade As Cadillac enters their 112th year, the iconic brand—one of North America’s first luxury automotive companies—strives to maintain the delicate balance between heritage and modern evolution. With the amount of detail and passion poured forth in the design of the fourth generation Cadillac Escalade 2015, one comes to realize that the company’s goal of marrying art and science stands manifested in the precisely rendered body of the full size luxury SUV.

seeps in further due to the sensuous texture of the car’s interior. On the door panel, the fabric goes from leather to suede to wood, and back to leather. The chrome and shiny black console, while promoting the vehicle’s convenience with Cadillac’s helpful CUE info/entertainment system, is further softened by beveled touch sensitive buttons and curved edges. In fact, every feature of the interior, like the exterior, is softened by delicate curves that encourage touch.

As the company returned to the drawing board with this model they asked themselves a very important question. “What is Cadillac?” For Andrew Smith, Executive Director of Global Cadillac Design, the answer was simple, “American luxury.” However, he wanted to “distill” that term further and over the course of six months, he worked with his team on defining what “American luxury” stands for. In the end, he came up with the following concept, “American luxury…is about being optimistic. So, this whole idea that tomorrow is going to be an even better day than today, this whole feeling that, really, the future is where we want to be.”

Cadillac didn’t stop at encouraging Escalade owners to get to know their vehicle personally through just a sensory experience, they also strove to make the vehicle practical and outfitted the SUV with a slew of desirable features—some of which they introduced to their segment’s market. Through diligent research, the company realized that their consumers were not just buying the Escalade as a status symbol, but for utilitarian purposes. With this in mind, the design team for Escalade ensured that the interior would meet every requirement an active family could require. This can be seen in its interior LED ambient lighting, extra storage hidden in many nooks and cranies, conveniently placed cupholders in the back—with younger passengers in mind--and a BluRay player with a 9” screen. More features designed to make one’s life easier are fold-flat second and third-row seats with standard powerfolding third row, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled seats, OnStar System, the Bose 16 speaker system Centerpoint surround sound system—that ensures noise cancellation, four-way reconfigurable navigation display, and a hands-free lift gate. Cadillac even took extra time to ensure that entering and exiting the vehicle, no matter where one sat, is improved through design, optimizing ease and comfort.

The minute you set eyes upon the new Escalade the concept of “American Luxury” is extremely evident in the design details. Looking at the vehicle from the side you can see the design inspiration from stealth fighter planes in the way the arch of the full LED headlamps stretch in a subtle crease that extends all the way to the rear of the vehicle. Unlike other brands who also take design inspiration from stealth fighters, Cadillac is constantly aware of their market and ensures that every angle of the Escalade curves softly, begging the air to flow over it, unrestrained. The same attention to detail that allows the client to discover the Cadillac crest hidden in the tall tail-lights, and the brand’s script written on the door sill’s trim plates that lights up when you open the car, continue when you enter the vehicle. Cadillac’s concept of marrying artistic flourishes with technology are fully evident in its interior. You can see how the Director of Design Eric Clough—whose involvement with this vehicle includes working on the two previous generations of the model—used his vast design experience and collaborative skills to ensure the detailed quality one would expect in a brand of Cadillac’s caliber. The detailed artisanship, according to Clough, includes “…cut and sew materials with real live stitching throughout the entire interior. It is the foundation of the cabin design, and similar to the way fine furniture and seating are made.” That is not the only aspect of bespoke style construction the vehicle has. The SUV is built in Arlington, TX, uses American made and dyed quality leather, and its wood features are from American elm, rosewood, and walnut. Through the three interior color options, you will quickly relax under the subtle tones of warmth and softness. This feeling of comfort

From a performance standpoint, Cadillac didn’t skimp on those details either. With Standard, Luxury, and Premium options to choose from the vehicle comes with a two or four-wheel drive option, 6.2L V-8, 420 horse-power, and with 460 pound feet of torque. The improved performance allows the vehicle to stretch its legs from 0-60 in 5.96 seconds, while also achieving fuel economy that is unparalleled in the market for this vehicle with an average 15/21 mpg. The safety features of the new Escalade is another area where the advancements of the company shine with Automatic Collision Preparation, Driver Assist & Awareness packages, Forward Collision Alert, Front and Rear Park Assist, Front and Rear Automatic Breaking, Lane Change Alert, Lane Wandering Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic alert, to name a few. (Not all of these features are available on all options.) When you combine all of these features, along with the soft ride and crisp maneuverability, it is easy to see why Cadillac is a heritage brand that will remain in many families for generations providing stories and memories that will continually be passed down. | BY CARLY DRAKE 41 Upscale Living Magazine |

THE PIERRE, A TAJ HOTEL, NEW YORK- SIRIO RISTORANTE The Pierre’s Sirio Ristorante, is named for legendary Le Cirque restaurateur Sirio Maccioni. That in itself distinguishes it from the rest. Both traditional and contemporary at the same time, Italian dishes are inventively conjured in this kitchen and artfully presented in their comfortable yet elegant dining space, inspired by Maccioni’s Tuscan background. As if that wasn’t enough of a pedigree, Sirio boasts an impressive history traced back to The Pierre’s chef de cuisine, the famous Auguste Escoffier, who presided over the hotel’s original opening. Dine here and enjoy a seasonally inspired menu of dishes, expertly paired with classic cocktails and wine, including private label wines produced exclusively for the restaurant. Today, Executive Chef Massimo Bebber is at the helm, developing clever and tasty dishes such as the buffalo mozzarella, prosciutto crudo, gooseberry compote and figs vin cotto or the savory parsnip soup with thyme and black truffle crouton, perfect when a chill is in the air. Try a Primi course of homemade squid ink garganelli, crab and lobster jus with a sprinkling of prosciutto breadcrumbs. For Secondi, the Mediterranean Branzino with celery root puree, basil oil and Puttanesca sauce is a seasonal champion or the grass fed veal chop with polenta, butternut squash, Brussels sprouts, pickled seasonal mushrooms and veal jus. Sautéed baby spinach with walnuts adds the right touch as a side. Try your best to leave room for a sweet, such as their mocha tiramisu barreto with lady fingers, chocolate flourless cake, mascarpone mousse and coffee macaroons----Old school and outstanding.

TWO E BAR/LOUNGE Playfully named for its location at 2 East 61st Street, this beautifully appointed room is so much more than a lounge. It’s actually a full on destination experience, from the time you step down into its sunken grand space and view their striking copper bar centerpiece, to the both classic and modernly influenced cocktails offered, along with light fare when craving a nibble. On Tuesday nights, a no-cover charge music series is hosted here and on Wednesdays, mixology cocktail crafting classes are offered. In addition, a monthly Chef ”s Social Club dinner featuring an intimate chefs table dining experience with Chef Ashfer Biju and Chef Micahel Mignano is a treat worth venturing. The Pierre, a Taj Hotel, New York debuted in Manhattan back in 1930. To this day, it continues its iconic legacy with seamless finesse, catering to the most discerning of travelers. In addition, politicians, celebrities and financiers have called the Pierre, home throughout the years, and this is no wonder. Timeless elegance makes this landmark an international favorite. Here guests enjoy the utmost of white glove pampering, with 140 guest rooms and 49 suites, featuring sublime views of Central Park and upper NYC. Eleven distinctive grand suites offer even more opulence, like the convenience of a complimentary Jaguar house car, but why drive anywhere if it’s all right at your fingertips.

Its origin is a minimalist, strictly vegetarian meal, traditionally served in Zen temples to accompany the tea ceremony. LUXURY Ski Resorts

THE BEST of the

ALPS | BY PRISCILLA PILON

Twelve amazing resorts await my intermediate ski skills and expert palette, and by the time I visit all of them, I should be an expert downhill racer who needs to go on a major diet. The Best of the Alps (http:// www.bestofthealps.com) is a collaboration of Europe’s finest ski and recreation destinations in upscale resorts. All are located in bucolic villages and where gastronomy and fashion are in peak form. Last ski season I visited four of the elite: Saint Moritz, Davos, Lech and St. Anton Arlberg. 51 Upscale Living Magazine |

TRAVEL + LEISURE ST. MORITZ, SWITZERLAND St. Moritz, Switzerland where winter tourism has its roots began opening their hearts to winter enthusiasts 150 years ago. The pristine slopes overlook Europe’s first palace hotel, 300 restaurants and over 100 shops. It is the playground for the international crowd that frequents this ultimate luxury town at the Top of the World.

STAY Hotel Carlton (http://en.carlton-stmoritz.ch), a Leading Hotel of the World and one of St. Moritz’s best five-star accommodations, was my abode for three nights in one of their 800 sq. ft. deluxe suites. The “wow” factor began at the door. A generous entryway with chic furnishings and space for ski clothes by the door, it set the tone for a lovely stay. Each suite that I toured was decorated with lavish and colorful fabrics. General Manager Dominic Bachofen explained that the extraordinary interior designer Carlo Rampazzi wanted to combine timeless elegance with a modern style – he succeeded. As Dominic noted, why stay in a hotel room that is decorated like your home? How will you know you are on vacation unless you experience an awakening of your senses? I tend to agree! Everything I could have wanted and needed to work and relax (multiple outlets for European and US plugs, Nespresso coffee maker, large desk area, sunk-in marble bath tub with separate shower, large built-in wardrobes, lounge area and spacious balcony) was in this superb unit. The handy ski valets in the hotel rent and store equipment. All-inclusive, the hotel provides transfers to and from Corviglia Ski Station. Forgot to pack gear or want a memorable souvenir? The ski shop is stocked with the latest alpine ski fashion. EAT Lunch on the slopes with views to die for, truffle king and chef, Reto Mathis of Restaurant La Marmite (http://www.mathisfood.ch), serves up pizza with freshly grated black truffles by the ounce for foodies in need of fix. Caviar was being downed like popcorn at a movie theater the day I dined there and the champagne flowed like a waterfall. Decadent, but casual, this spot is great people watching and a gastronomy paradise 8,000 feet in the air. The horse knows the way to carry the sleigh through the white and drifted snow to the edge of Lake Staz’s off the beaten path restaurant, Al Lej da Staz. It was over the river and through the woods via fur-lined horse-drawn carriage to reach this warm and cozy local dining spot. Traditional Swiss food, complete with house specialty “hay soup” offers diners a unique experience. Dinner views of the Alpen-glow is best found at Hotel Carlton’s Restaurant Romanoff, where specialties of the Engadine region showcase Swiss cuisine in a sophisticated, yet not too serious dining room. 52 Upscale Living Magazine |

There are three main ski areas with over 217 miles of slopes that make up St. Moritz: Corviglia, Corvatsch and Diavolezza. Each zone is comprised of highly efficient lifts that keep the lines moving. Food lovers will enjoy over 30 choices for drinks and dining on the mountain. While Americans typically ski a full day and stop briefly for lunch, most Europeans have the right idea – push hard in the morning in the fresh powder and retire for the day after a leisurely lunch and robust cocktail. Sunshine prevails in this area, so sunbathing is also part of the afternoon activities during ski season in St. Moritz. APRÈS SKI Pavarotti and Friends (Plazza dal Mulin 3
7500 St. Moritz), is the upscale “Cheers” of St. Moritz. Pavarotti look-alike owner and entertaining opera singer in his own right, Deny Mainente knows the locals and frequent visitors by name. Wine snob and host with most, he delivers Italian antipasto and first-class wines with a gigantic smile. With only 60 seats, be prepared to share a bench with strangers – they won’t be strangers for long. The affectionate owner’s vibe rubs off on everyone! Badrutt’s Palace Hotel (http://www.badruttspalace.com/en/) was the first palace hotel in Europe. Its regal lobby or Le Grand Hall as it’s named, makes for a perfect place to rendezvous for an après ski mélange. Hanging out here you will feel as though you are seated on the catwalk of a Paris winter runway show. If you’ve worked too hard to imbibe just yet, the relaxing 12,000+ square foot spa at Hotel Carlton is the way to go. Book a massage to soothe weary muscles after a day on the slopes. Hair, makeup, nails and hydrotherapy are just a few of the services this complete spa offers guests to unwind and get ready for the evening. HOW TO GET THERE By Air/Rail: Zurich, 150 miles. If you fly any airline directly from the U.S. into either Zurich or Geneva airports, you can skip the baggage claim and go straight to your final destination via the Swiss Railway System. See the official Swiss Tourism site for details (http://www.swisspasses.com/swiss-fly-luggage/). Jet owners will appreciate the Engadin Airport, which is only three miles from the center of St. Moritz. Helicopters can be arranged for pick up from Verona or many of the other small airports in Switzerland and Italy. Davos-Klosters (http://www.davos.ch/en.html), Switzerland is a winter wonderland in the highest town of the Swiss Alps with Europe’s largest natural ice rink. A very cosmopolitan city, Davos has attracted the affluent and politico for many years that enjoy skiing, skating, ice hockey, tobogganing, and the unusual sport of llama trekking. STAY The futuristic Intercontinental Hotel (http://www.intercontinental.com/ hotels/gb/en/davos-dorf./zdvda/hoteldetail) is Davos’ newest addition to

the luxury market. It had just opened when I visited in early February, 2014. If the exterior egg shaped design doesn’t impress you, the interior lobby will certainly grab your attention. Public spaces are decorated with natural elements. Bookcases are lined with rolled alpine blankets and cords of wood giving off a warm vibe to compliment the space-age design.

TRAVEL + LEISURE My private ski guide came from the Swiss Snowsport School (http://ssd. ch/en/) next to the mountain railway Parsenn. Not only did he show me the beautiful vistas while we tore up the runs, he also indulged me in taking a million photographs. He was patient and instructive without being overbearing. And, he knew the best lunch and après ski spots to share with me.

Old-world Steigenberger Grand Hotel Belvedere (http:// en.steigenberger.com/Davos/Steigenberger-Grandhotel-Belvedere) is one of Davos’ historical gems. Recently updated, the hotel boasts a relaxing spa and wellness center with steam rooms and saunas. The Bistro Voilà is the “it spot” for an afternoon snack and sit on the sun terrace to catch some rays. My suite was well-appointed, with a large walk-in closet and separate ski cubbyhole for my gear.

I tried cross-country skiing for the first time with an excellent instructor. It wasn’t her fault that I fell at the end and broke my tailbone. I was showing off and definitely underestimating my newfound skills. She hailed from the Hofmänner Sport Company (www.hofmaenner.com) which is adjacent to trails. I was impressed with the 60+ miles of trails, some illuminated at night and the beautiful terrain surrounding the trails.

Spoil yourself at Hotel Grischa, a superior four-star hotel with five-star décor, amenities and service. Modern, sleek rooms are spectacularly decorated and have luxurious upgrades like gourmet kitchens in the larger suites. Known as a gastronomy hotel, there is something for everyone since they have five different dining options to choose from.

HOW TO GET THERE Like mentioned previously, transport is easy by Swiss National Rail from Zurich where you can arrange to have your bags delivered to your destination rail station, or alternatively, rent or hire a private car and arrive in style. BMW is the official sponsor of The Best of the Alps and the Davos ski resort. Lech Zürs am Arlberg, Austria, voted Europe’s “Prettiest Village” in 2004 is not just a good-looking town; world-class skiing coexists with a thriving community committed to the environment. They produce the majority of the village’s energy by recycling and repurposing virtually everything. The slopes sit above the tree line, giving skiers unobstructed panoramic views. This cozy and intimate chic area is the preferred winter holiday destination for discerning clients, which includes many of the Royal families from Europe. HOW TO GET THERE By plane/train: Zurich (2h plus train), and Innsbruck (1.5 h plus train). Limousine service is available, check with your hotel concierge for specifics.

EAT

By helicopter:

On the mountain, between skiing areas Jakobshorn and Dischmatal, restaurant Hoehenweg (http://www.bergrestaurant-hoehenweg.ch/index. html) is rustic, but extremely cozy with fur-lined chairs to warm skiers. This restaurant is famous for their pizza and panoramic views of Davos.

For those wishing a faster arrival in Lech, try the services of Wucher Helicopter (http://www.wucher-helicopter.at/EN/home/).

Hotel Grischa’s Leonto (www.hotelgrischa.ch) fine dining restaurant serves authentic Mediterranean cuisine in a beautiful atmosphere. Try an intimate dinner at Hotel Seehof ’s Amrein’s Seehofstübil (www. seehofdavos.ch) for an incredible evening of fine wines and creative cuisine. Leaders from around the world flock to this restaurant while attending the annual World Economic Forum. Bill Gates is a frequent guest of the hotel and inside scoop says the Buol Suite is his room of choice at the Seehof. If you want magic, Mann & Co at Waldhotel (www.waldhotel-davos. ch) is one of Davos’ best gastronomy delights. Named after the famous author of The Magic Mountain, Thomas Mann, the restaurant is located at the top of the town. Not an easy drive uphill, but don’t let that stop you from visiting. The hotel provides transportation for dining guests with reservations. SKI

STAY

Nearly 200 miles of ski slopes make up the ski areas of Davos-Klosters. There are 58 lifts to take you up the mountain and nearby access points in the heart of the town. For downhill equipment rentals, I used Paarsenn Sport (http://www.paarsennsport.ch/en/), steps from the main lift, Jakobshorn Gondola. It was quick and hassle-free. They will store your gear nightly for your convenience.

The local Schneider family owns and operates the Hotel Arlberg (http:// www.arlberghotel.at/en/home/) with great passion. Combining tradition with modern lifestyle is their philosophy. TRAVEL + LEISURE are met. A full-service serene spa with indoor and outdoor pools is at your feet and the state-of-the-art gym has a personal trainer on demand. Secure ski lockers for guests are provided which cuts down on the clutter in your room. Two restaurants offer Italian and local cuisine and the spacious lobby bar is a comfy hangout to unwind while sipping on your favorite libation. My favorite meal here was breakfast. The coffee was out of this world and the buffet and a-la-carte menu divine. Perfectly sublime, Hotel Aurelio (http://www.aureliolech.com/en/) ski in/ski out lodge is where upscale meets laidback alpine design. Rooms are modern, but in keeping with the local style of wooden walls and ceilings. Picture-perfect for friends and family gatherings, they offer extravagant accommodations for larger groups. No request is too tall for the staff to arrange. Customer service is their number one goal. The units are impeccably decorated and the over-the-top villa (2,100 sq. ft.) is one of the reasons they were voted “Austria’s Best Ski Chalet” in 2013.

will love the trails designed to challenge the daredevils. There are 170 miles of slopes and 84 chair lifts; crowds are spread out and lift lines are short. Strolz (http://www.strolz.at/en/) is the top game in town for ski rentals. It’s one stop shopping for lift tickets, gear and the latest trends in ski apparel. With multiple locations and the ability to reserve rentals online, you will be on the slopes in no time. Hotel Tannberghof sits in the center of town and is a very popular après ski destination. People of all ages place their skis in the racks and sit down under the umbrellas outside to imbibe on the spirits or local beers. Hotel Pfefferkorn has a lively outdoors covered bar that is perpetually packed between 4:00pm and 7:00pm. Playing today’s hits with classic oldies mixed in, everyone sings along with the fun tunes spun by a local DJ. ST. ANTON, ARLBERG, AUSTRIA

St. Anton a sporty village in the Alps with the best après ski and nightlife in the world. The after ski party begins sometime post lunch and is legendary in all of Austria. The sporty side speaks to its reputation for having some of the best hiking and ski guides in the country who trek year round and ski until the last run has melted. STAY

EAT On the slopes, stop by for a coffee, aperitif or spontaneous lunch at Rud Alpe (http://rud-alpe.at/). HOTEL HIRLANDA ZÜRS AM ALBERG Traditional fondue is the specialty of the house at the restaurant Alter Goldener Berg (The Old Gold Mountain) located in the “over town” of Oberlech. The interior is 500 years old, lovingly preserved and gives you a feeling that you have stepped back in time. For wine connoisseurs, book a wine tasting before dinner in the Probierkeller wine cellar which features over a 1,000 bottles of wine, many of which are rare magnums. The refined restaurant Aurelio’s serves traditional Austrian specialties, but excels at its creative global cuisine. The dishes are works of art, complicated, yet not fussy. I found the service impeccable, attentive, not overbearing. The wine list is superb. Of note, they stock a wide range of aged cognacs and brandies.

The Alberg Hospiz Hotel (http://www.arlberghospiz.at) is a luxury hotel connected to the ski area of St. Anton in the state of St. Anton. Since the late 1300’s the Hospiz has been showing great hospitality to travelers. In the beginning, the first guests were stranded travelers trying to cross the Arlberg pass. Caught in freezing temperatures, weary trekkers were offered a warm meal, some wine and a bed for the night. Today, the Hospiz’ proprieters, the Werner family, continue the tradition of excellence in hospitality. Nightly, Austrian musicians entertain guests with traditional songs. Sitting by the huge roaring fireplace on a cold wintry night listening to local tunes is a soothing way to end an awesome ski day. Sophisticated but warm décor dons each well-furnished room and charm oozes out of every inch of the friendly hotel. In addition to running a first-rate luxury hotel and spa, the Werner’s are committed to the arts and charity. The Brotherhood of St. Christoph, an organization providing support to children in need, holds its meetings in the historic wedding chapel attached to the hotel. Juan Carlos of Spain, Karl Gustav of Sweden, Caroline of Monaco are members of the Brotherhood, and His Royal Highness, Charles Windsor, the Prince of Wales is an honorary member of this worthwhile society.

SKI

Yearly new artists in residence are chosen to display their works throughout the hotel and spa areas. Studio space is given to them free of charge to create masterpieces in the making.

The popularity of skiing in Lech is easily understood given the beauty of Lech. Because the slopes are above the tree line, novices can learn easily without having to worry about losing control and hitting a tree. Experts 54 Upscale Living Magazine | Issue 34

Adi Werner, the family patriarch, is a wine collector of distinction. The hotel has five cellars that house 60,000 bottles that include massive col-

Although Adi is a huge French wine fan, he also stocks exceptional Austrian wines. The “Big Bottle” wine cellar (the largest private large bottle collection in Europe) sits across the street underneath the sister property, Hospiz Alm Chalet. Over 3,000 Magnums (.5 L), Double Magnums (3.0 L), Jeroboams (4.5 L), Imperials (6.0 L), Salmanazars (9.0 L), Balthazars (12.0 L), and Nebuchadnezzars (15.0 L – equivalent to 16 standard bottles of wine) are kept here. Tastings in both cellars can be arranged with the sommelier at the hotel.

enthusiasts from around the world. Incredibly fast, I was in my ski boots within minutes of walking into the Intersport Arlberg (http://www.intersport-arlberg.com/en/ ) shop on the first floor of Hotel Hospiz. Ski valets help self-service system for storing skis and boots is quite handy and efficient. The Arlberg Ski School (http://www.skischool-arlberg.com/en/home. html) is second-to-none for children of all ages and adults of all ski levels.

EAT

High altitude dining, at 6,840 feet at the top of the Galzig cable car, lays upscale restaurant VerwallStube (www.arlbergerbergbahnen.com) with picturesque mountain views to die for. You’ll love the sights and adore the food/wine even more! Each course I ordered was beautiful and tasted as delectable as it looked, but if I have to pick one favorite it would be the dessert – Austrian cream cheese dumplings with strawberry foam and coulis.

The most popular après ski bar in the Austrian Alps is MooserWirt (http://www.mooserwirt.at/en/apres-ski.html). During ski season, 2,000 people finish their last runs of the day and head to this infamous bar to sing, dance and drink the afternoon away. A worldwide favorite, the common language is a broad smile and a clink of a frosty glass. While not a particularly classy setting, the exciting atmosphere is not to be missed. For those who need a quieter sophistication, try the amiable Pub 37 at number two Im Gries Street or the bar at the Hospiz Hotel.

The Museum St. Anton is a combination alpine history museum and fine dining destination. It was a pleasant evening having a little history lesson before feasting on incredible meat and cheese dishes and fine wines. The chef was tipped off that I spend most of the year in Texas, so he took the time to top my tenderloin off with a replica of a longhorn made with puff pastry. Now that’s hospitality! The Post Hotel, in the heart of St. Anton, has a lovely terrace for lunch on sunny days and a cozy dining room during inclement weather. Filet of local bull and risotto with salmon and watercress are two of the local favorite dishes and they offer customization of the menu for those who want to eat healthier or have dietary restrictions. It’s also a cool place for an afternoon beer in the sun at one of the tables made from old beer barrels. SKI The mountains that make up the St. Anton Arlberg ski areas have 84 state-of-the-art lifts have the capacity to quickly move thousands of people up to the pristine wide-open slopes for fresh powder skiing. Not for the faint of heart, a petit cable car takes brave souls up to the Schindler and Valluga peaks, 9,222 feet above sea level where 360 degree views of the Austrian Alps are awe-inspiring. Some 211 miles of marked ski runs and another 124 miles of “off piste” or off the trail runs exist in Austria’s most relaxed and party hearty ski area. Each year St. Anton Arlberg hosts a ski show in the “Finisher stadium” where crowds gather for an exhibition by St. Anton’s finest professional ski instructors. Synchronized skiers dazzle the crowd by coming down the slopes in tandem and ski jumpers deliver Olympic-worthy performance tricks. Truly an international event flags from each nation are projected onto the snow to show unity in the name of winter sports

Thank you to Swiss Tourism (http://www.myswitzerland.com/en-us/ home.html), Austrian Tourism (http://www.austria.info/us) and The Best of the Alps for hosting the ultimate ski trip of a lifetime. WINE + SPIRITS

2011 MASSETO wine Masseto, a cru Merlot grown in the vineyard on a hill that gives its name to the wine, debuts today on the domestic and international markets in its 2011 vintage. Its exceptional terroir, combined with painstaking attention at every step of its production, have made Masseto, right from the very beginning, one of the world’s greatest wines, one given the highest accolades and awards by the most authoritative winesector journals and guides, and the first Italian wine to win placement in Place de Bordeaux, En Livrable, in 2008 with the 2006 vintage. “With the 2011 vintage, Masseto returns to a typically Mediterranean expression of a warm year in the Bolgheri terroir,” commented Axel Heinz, Winemaker and Director of Production. “Yet the overall impression is one of superb balance and measure, notwithstanding the wine’s rich concentration and ripeness. A near-opaque colour greets the eye, followed by explosive aromas of gloriously-ripe wild red berryfruit cosseted by hints of toasty oak and dark chocolate, but easily avoiding any hint of jamminess. A fullvolumed palate impresses with its deep concentration and opulence, displaying remarkably supple, glossy tannins. Masseto 2011 concludes with a cleanly-defined vein of crisp acidity, infused with the fruit and spice encountered on the nose.” In the cellar, each individual vineyard lot was vinified separately, then the lots were matured separately for the first 12 month, in French oak. The definitive assemblage was then made, and the final wine returned t the same barrels for an additional year, for an overall total of 24 months. Masseto 2011 was given a further 12 months in the bottle before release. | By Ashley Peterson

CIGARS

Cigar Sanctum

Cigar Sanctum, the London design house that creates gold and silver jewelry for the passionate cigar smoker, began life in a haze of blue smoke. A small fraternity of friends could be seen smoking fine cigars, drinking the wonderfully rich Barbaresco and talking about everything under the sun (because that’s what cigars do to a person). Like so many cigar smokers, we are a passionate bunch. Passionate about our friends, art, travel, how we pass a lazy Sunday, the cigars we smoke, the wine we drink, the clothes we wear. This ritual is how we view the world - our creed - and Zino Davidoff was right when he said that the act of cigar smoking is a ceremonial one.

And from where do the ideas arise? Well, we find inspiration in Havana’s old Partagas Factory, the birthplace of premium rolled cigars since 1845. We find inspiration in words and have created a collection of classic, weighty silver key rings with famous cigar quotes. We find inspiration in the concept of Memento Mori, which is Latin for Remember Death. Except it’s not. It’s Remember Life. It’s a reminder that our time here is fleeting, and we must enjoy life each day. Be kind. Love one another. Experience new things. And, of course, smoke great cigars. Our Memento Mori range - a smoking skull set against two crossed cigars - is all about loving life.

That summer’s evening, we spoke about the fact that we all wear jewelry - some classic in style, some rock and roll. However, there was nothing on the market that allowed us to pay homage to one of our greatest pleasures. And so Cigar Sanctum was born. The world’s first design house aimed solely at creating jewelry for the cigar smoker. Cigar Sanctum designs reflect the many facets of the cigar world, from the cigar culture of old Havana to the gentlemen’s clubs of Edwardian England to the high octane world of rock and roll today. And each design carries with it a story that creates a bond between recipient and object, because we believe that to wear jewelry is to wear a badge. It’s something of which to be proud.

In addition to our original jewelry, Cigar Sanctum also sources rare cigar-related pieces. From a personally owned Winston Churchill cigar to an impossible-to-find Cartier cutter. From the ashtray that Ernest Hemingway gifted Orson Welles more than half a century ago to an Art Nouveau Tiffany table lighter. From Che Guevara’s personal tobacco box to a limited edition vintage Dunhill humidor. All speak of passions past … until they find a new custodian.

Since launching Cigar Sanctum, we’ve discovered that there remains an insatiable appetite for classic, weighty cufflinks. We’ve rediscovered that object of bygone sartorial elegance - the lapel pin. And a key ring now needs to carry the weight of a small stone. We’ve even developed a process for finishing each of our handmade silver designs that still raises eyebrows: we silver-plate it. This counterintuitive act - silver-plating silver - lifts each piece and gives it a wonderful brilliance. We’re big fans of counter intuition.

Cigar Sanctum’s motto is In Puros Amicitia. “In Cigars There Is Friendship.” New acquaintances spark and lifelong friendships become cemented over cigars. And the common thread that runs through this is how the passionate cigar smoker views the world. Our jewelry is handmade, contemporary and intensely personal and speaks to those who live a life filled with passion. To view our collections, please visit www.cigarsanctum.com. | By Diego Santo

LUXURY RESORTS WITH A TOUCH OF

SOUTHERN CHARM |  By Damon M. Banks

There is certainly no shortage of luxury resort destinations throughout the United States that provide more than merely golf, but also include a host of activities to entertain all of your travel companions. However, while I have experienced very few situations involving unprofessional personalities while a guest at a number of resorts both in the United States and abroad, there is always something simply refreshing when not only the red carpet is rolled out for guests, but so is the unmistakable “southern charm” in every sense of the term. Wanting to re-visit several of my favorite southern getaways, while also exploring a few resorts totally new to me for this adventure, the list of potential resorts quickly grew to include the Greenbriar, the Homestead, Kiawah Island, Pinehurst, Sea Island, Sea Pines, and a few other unique possibilities. At the end of the day, with nothing personal against any resort among this amazing collection of getaways, it was decided that this particular expedition would focus on a progressive journey south through the Sandhills region of North Carolina at Pinehurst, followed by the seaside escape of Kiawah Island just outside of Charleston, and ending further south in South Carolina’s Lowcountry region at Hilton Head’s Sea Pines Resort. 68 Upscale Living Magazine

GOLFING

Pinehurst Resort – North Carolina Arriving to the area just a few weeks prior to the US Open being played on the famed Pinehurst No. 2, the entire area seemed to be gearing up for this international event. Meandering through the countryside and around the numerous traffic circles, as I neared the stately Carolina Hotel, it becomes very obvious that the residents, staff and many guests shuffling around the property were there with one thing on their minds – golf. The Pinehurst Resort has The Carolina Hotel, as well as the Holly Inn, Manor Inn and villa rentals to provide guests with a number of options. Larger groups should inquire about the eleven different four-bedroom villas available immediately adjacent to the Carolina Hotel. Arriving to the Carolina, the bellmen certainly go above and beyond to showcase their southern charm while taking care of every detail from having your bags ready to go to the room, your golf bags unpacked and tagged to be sent over to the clubhouse and even the local suggestion on where to have dinner. While the check-in process was a bit grueling with an extended wait and a fairly uninformed lone employee at the front desk, the hotel itself was a truly elegant piece of history. The oversized verandas seemed to wrap around most of the hotel, which were lined with large rocking chairs quietly calling for guests to sit, relax and unwind with a refreshing mint julep being served by the staff of the Ryder Cup Lounge. Inside, the main halls were decorated with photos and memorabilia that explained the story of why this unassuming destination is often referred to as the “home of golf in America.” Overall, the staff overseeing the Ryder Cup Lounge and the complimentary afternoon tea in the lobby, as well as the bellmen and the concierge staff were all exceptionally helpful and made sure to provide that warm

hospitality and sense of southern charm one would expect. While the room was not large, and not luxurious, this just provided more inspiration to spend the mornings and evenings enjoying the fresh air from the rocking chairs on the verandas. To further enhance the unique combination of Scottish heritage and southern charm, the bagpipes could be heard in the distance just before six o’clock in the evening, and then proceeded to become more vibrant as the lone bagpiper made his way through the gates and onto the grassy area immediately in front of the Carolina Hotel where he played for several minutes to lull the guests into a state of ultimate relaxation at the end the day. With the newest addition to the resort, Pinehurst now offers guests nine dynamic golf courses as part of the entire Pinehurst Resort experience, but I unfortunately only had time to play one course during this visit. So without reservation, I chose to tackle No. 2 just a few weeks before the big-hitters like Mickelson, Mcllroy and Rose were due to arrive for the 2014 US Open. Walking this magnificent course with a caddie is the only way to accurately get a feeling of this golf masterpiece. I was honored to have a living legend as my caddie; a man who has been working at Pinehurst for 71 years, and not only knows every inch of the golf course, but has a story that goes along with every single one of these inches. With Willie McRae by my side, his course knowledge and ability to read the putts with mind-blowing precision kept me in awe throughout the entire round. Not an overly complicated course, but a design and condition that forces you to think about every shot, and savor each birdie written on the scorecard. And with McRae in the background telling your ball to “run like you stole something ball,” or describing his round with Ben Hogan during the 1951 Ryder Cub, the Pinehurst experience of No. 2 seemed complete. 69 Upscale Living Magazine |

GOLFING

Kiawah Island Resort – South Carolina Traveling underneath the massive overhanging oak trees with the draping Spanish moss clinging to the branches, the drive through Johns Island slowly takes you away from any stress left behind, and the lush landscaping and salty ocean air welcomes you with open arms. Entering yet again another traffic circle, I know that Kiawah Island is only a few minutes away, and the ever-growing Freshfields Village is always a welcoming sight of not only civilization, but also exciting resort-style civilization. A large grocery store, the local coffee shop and a host of restaurants and shops are part of this expertly designed retail center. For me, it’s a great place to quickly gather a few grocery items and a much needed soy latte at JavaJava, where there is always a table available outside where I can sip my coffee and watch the families in full vacation mode as the parents enjoy the shops with the employees who all exude southern charm, while the kids run around the grassy area immediately across from Java-Java. I have a lot of history with this resort, and have spent many days on the island during my lifetime. However, I had not visited in a few years, so this was an opportunity to become reacquainted with this destination that I truly adore. While the resort continues to grow and improve, the quintessential feeling of luxury and adventure is still more alive than ever before. Here, you have several very distinctive options when it comes to the accommodations by the Resort, which range from large villas, private homes, or the newer addition to the island, The Sanctuary Hotel. While I understand many larger families prefer the conveniences of staying in one of the villas, The Sanctuary provides a level of luxury and service that is simply unmatched on the island. Beyond the convenience of having the award-winning spa, restaurants and other amenities on property while a guest of the hotel, the pool and beach services that are only available to hotel guests far outweigh the others on the island. The pool 70 Upscale Living Magazine | Issue 34

staff is quick to have your chairs or cabana area personally prepared so that relaxation can commence without delay. The adult pool immediately overlooking the beach is always a popular destination for the day, but both the oversized family pool and adult pool have a number of great frozen drinks guaranteed to keep you refreshed. There are other pools, and even water slides, on the island, which can be fun for the kids, but as I quickly learned, the pools, staff and undersized self-service towels at these other areas are a very distant runner-up to the exquisite service and overall resort atmosphere found at The Sanctuary. The rooms and suites are all modern, but also maintain enough grandeur and charm to remind you that you are in a beach resort just minutes away from the ultimate capitol of the south – Charleston. Once you are able to pull yourself away from pool scene, activities are available on the island for all ages, and all personalities. Bike trails are everywhere, and the bikes are very easy to arrange through the resort. Nature activities, kids camp, paddle boarding, kayaking and more are only minutes away, and spread throughout the island. Tennis players will be delighted with the opportunities on the island, and sure to sharpen their games during the visit. Even with the many activities and dining options available on the island and at Freshfields Village, it’s still the exceptional championship golf courses that lure guests to Kiawah from all over the world. PGA Tour Player Justin Leonard said it best when he commented, “Each Kiawah course tells its own story, in its purest form, and makes contact with the soul of the game.” Just off of the main island is Oak Point by Clyde Johnston, which is a fairly open links style course. Immediately on the right when you enter the Kiawah Island gate is Cougar Point by Gary Player, which is a charming course that provides amazing views out across

GOLFING the marshes along with some extremely challenging pin placements sure to keep you thinking about every shot. Just past The Sanctuary Hotel, Turtle Point by Jack Nicklaus is in my opinion, one of the best courses in the area. A beautiful clubhouse and practice facility make you want to simply savor every minute you have before teeing off. This inviting atmosphere, together with a golf course that is as dynamic as they come, including the challenging holes among the dunes overlooking the beach, make this a true golfer’s paradise. Further down the Kiawah Island Parkway and beyond the second security gate, Osprey Point by Tom Fazio is one of the few courses where water can come into play on almost every hole, but remains a very enjoyable course that is sure to provide a few great alligator sightings. Osprey has just re-opened after being closed for renovations during the summer and fall, and is sure to be better than ever with these enhancements. Of course, the Kiawah golf adventure is never complete without at least one round at the crème de la crème of golf courses in the world – the famed Ocean Course. Clearly one of the greatest accomplishments by Pete Dye, the Ocean Course has already hosted the 1991 Ryder Cup, the 1997 and 2003 World Cups, the 2007 Senior PGA Championship and

the 2012 PGA Championship. The Ocean Course is known around the world to provide every tour player, or simply the weekend golfer, one of the most extraordinary courses in the world, a truly humbling round of golf, and a level of service and southern charm unmatched today. The best way to have the quintessential Ocean Course experience is with a caddie. Here both caddie and forecaddie options are available depending on the time of day, but I opted to walk every inch of a course that has been graced with many of the greatest golfers in the world. It’s simply impossible to put into words the pure magnificence felt while playing this course… a course that can be relentlessly ruthless, while maintaining the unexplainable beauty and charm that keeps you wanting more. For so many years, Kiawah Island Resort has always offered some of the best golf and tennis in the world to their guests, along with endless amounts of activities for the entire family. However, it was always missing that luxury hotel experience, or at least it was before the crown jewel of Kiawah was established with the opening of The Sanctuary Hotel. When it comes to luxurious amenities and services, world-class golf and tennis, and a healthy dose of southern charm, Kiawah Island Resort is in a class by itself.

Sea Pines Resort – South Carolina The drive down to Hilton Head from Kiawah was not only overwhelmingly beautiful, but made the harsh reality of having to leave the good life of Kiawah a bit easier. I knew that within a few hours, I would be arriving to the pristine Sea Pines Resort. Yet another destination where the staff bends over backwards to cater to each guest while providing outstanding service with their very own touch of southern charm. The iconic red and white lighthouse towers above the resort in the not-so distance, reminding guests of the rich history found on this resort, as well as serving as the landmark of one of the most recognizable marinas in the boating world. This is Sea Pines Resort, and sure to provide a few days of fun and sun.

Very much a family getaway with not only more great golf for South Carolina, but also miles of beaches, an exceptional marina with a number of boating offerings, a massive 605-acre Forest Preserve, tennis, as well as a personal favorite, Lawton Stables with multiple programs for riders of all skill levels. Like most of these supersized resorts, accommodations are designed to meet every desire and budget. A personal favorite for large family gatherings is the beachfront rental home, Endless Summer at 13 Seaside Sparrow. This amazing eight-bedroom home has everything desired, including private pool, media room, gourmet kitchen, multiple living areas and an endless list of amenities. 71 Upscale Living Magazine | Issue 34

GOLFING Having stayed in villas and homes in the past, I was excited to stay at The Inn at Harbour Town this visit, and take advantage of the brand new pool that was only a few weeks old at that point. Having just left Kiawah Island, The Inn at Harbour Town seemed like the little sister of The Sanctuary Hotel; while nearly a quarter of the size, it still maintains that unmistakable feeling of the opulent luxury of yesteryear. The 60-room boutique hotel is not filled with over-the-top lavishness, but a combination of the elegant paneling and moldings, towering columns, stately piano and the natural light streaming in through the walls of windows make this property as charming as they come. The rooms are equally as welcoming with fine linens, spa-like bathrooms and state-of-the-art media to provide guests with classic design side-by-side with the modern conveniences we all want today. If you’re traveling with family and looking for the ultimate Sea Pines experience, inquire about the marvelous two-bedroom Highlander Suite. The island of Hilton Head is always a favorite for golfers with more than fifty courses in the area, but it’s no surprise that Sea Pines is always at the top of everyone’s must-play list. Home of the RBC Heritage each year, Harbour Town Golf Links is another course where the overall awe-inspiring beauty overpowers the abuse that can be frequent when not hitting the ball pure; making any day of golf, regardless of the final score, an experience of a lifetime. The entire round is filled with plenty of moments to last forever, but none can match that feeling of walking up to the tee box of number eighteen and talking with your caddie not only about your own strategy, but also about the other players who have made history on the final day of the RBC Heritage from that very spot. “Caddies spend more time with our valued guests than any one other member of our team! Our caddies personalize their service relative to the group’s preferences. All groups have high expectations, and we aim to exceed them,” said John Farrell, PGA Director of Golf at The Sea Pines Resort.

Though I was disappointed when I discovered that Heron Point was closed, it promises to be better than ever when reopening. A Pete Dye design that provides all the thrills and frills associated with Dye layouts, I always find that it’s a great place to sharpen the game before teeing up at Harbour Town. The third course on the island is the Ocean Course, which is another piece of history for this seaside escape. Actually the first course built on Hilton Head; today the Ocean Course is beloved by the locals and guests alike, while also being a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary course. With a plethora of water activities, hidden places to unwind and unparalleled golf memories to be discovered, Sea Pines Resort will always hold a special place in my heart. FINAL TAKE Pinehurst might not have as many resort activities to offer non-golfers, but with the incredibly rich history found throughout this resort, it’s a very special place for any golfer to experience at least once in a lifetime. The Osprey Point golf course at Kiawah is actually using the same grass on the new greens as the Ocean Course, which has proved to be a perfect solution for the area. The caliber of golf at Kiawah only gets better with time, and after not visiting for several years, I now remember all the reasons that this is such a perfect resort getaway. The same company that owns Kiawah Island recently acquired Sea Pines, and there is a major “facelift” happening to the resort currently. While the construction is a bit disruptive at the moment, these new enhancements at Sea Pines are looking phenomenal, and sure to impress the most discerning guests. The Plantation Golf Club is now open and has one of the most state-of-the-art golf learning centers I’ve seen in a long time; the Sea Pines Beach Club was in the final stages and sure to be breath-taking; and though the brand new clubhouse at Harbour Town Golf Links won’t be seen until later in 2015, it’s certain to be as impressive as the course itself. In the case of these three resorts, each has a unique way of showcasing their southern charm and making guests feel right at home. 72 Upscale Living Magazine |
