“THE FLY ET AL” - BY BOB LULL

What is that thing on the ceiling Seems like gravity it is repealing It’s upside down, doesn’t seem right Oops there it goes, it’s now taken flight

As I watch it soaring around It begs a question profound Have you ever wondered why They named that thing a fly

Someone once took a notion To name that thing for its motion Much like a few other creatures Named for their habits or features

Like that cute little bird coming Drinking from flowers while humming That bouncer in the grass is a hopper A Daddy with long legs is named proper

Yet there are lots more, I insist That should be put on this list Of those whose name should reflect The actions from them we expect

We could call an ant a walker For a cricket maybe try talker Why not name a bee for its buzz A sound a bunch of them does

A chipmunk could be called dasher For a firefly I like the name flasher Should we name a frog for its croak A butterfly for its colorful cloak Let’s call some for just doing their thing Like naming a wasp for its sting Or honor another fine creature By ordaining the mantis a preacher

On my rename list, the Ladybug is These days we must we call her Ms. Yet I don’t think they all can be sisters I would bet there are really some misters

There are some people, I would guess Who about this, couldn’t care less They would laugh and say with a shrug Hey! Get real! It’s only a #&*$** bug

So I’ll withhold my name for the rat The skeeter, the tick and the knat And a bad bunch, I’m sure you’ll agree The ones that you “no can see.”

In summation it seems to be clear The mystery will remain, I fear Because none of you really cares why They named that thing – The Fly

I hate to leave – been lots of fun Just got a call and I gotta run To a rather important appointment My subject got stuck in some ointment.
