Cinco de Mayo - May 5 - This holiday celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War . May 5th is also known as Battle of Puebla Day . Gather for a presentation on the history and cultural significance of the holiday, then celebrate in the Grand Living Room as we pay culinary and musical homage to our neighbors to the South .

Mother's Day - May 8th - Mother's Day is a celebration honoring the mother of the family or individual, as well as motherhood, maternal bonds, and the influence of mothers in society . Anna Jarvis of Philadelphia originated Mother’s Day and in 1914 U .S . Pres . Woodrow Wilson made it a national holiday . Did you know? The Kentucky Derby - May 7th - is a horse race held annually in Louisville, Kentucky, United States, capping the two-week-long Kentucky Derby Festival . Leading up to the main event, we'll be watching historical documentaries and creating extravagant hats to wear as we watch the races! Then, watch the big race on May 7th and show off your derby look! Best dressed wins a prize .

Father’s Day Social - Father’s Day in the United States is a holiday to honor fathers . Credit for originating the holiday is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth . President Richard Nixon established it as a national holiday in 1972 . A day to celebrate fathers, join us for a Sunday Social with brews, and informative and unique classic saxophone performance by Jeff Gross .

Juneteenth - June 19 - Commemorate this day with a documentary on Juneteenth’s history and a celebration of freedom . Juneteenth commemorates the day when emancipation reached enslaved people in the deepest parts of the South . It wasn't until June 19, 1865, two months after the Civil War ended and more than two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation, that Union Gen . Gordon Granger and more than a thousand U .S . troops shared the news of freedom with the 250,000 enslaved people in the state . The anniversary of that day is celebrated as one of the best-regarded African American holidays in this country, ranking next only to Dr . Martin Luther King Jr .’s birthday .
