Change is hard. Your transition to civilian life doesn’t have to be.

At zero8hundred our goal is to ease the transition from military to civilian life. We are here to connect you to the resources specifically suited to your goals for joining the Southern California civilian workforce and community.

This free individualized support is available up to a full year prior to military separation through a full year post-military separation. The zero8hundred team are trained Resource Specialists, with lived military experience, who are committed to working alongside transitioning service members to help them design and execute the post-military journey they want.

OUR MISSION

The mission of Zero8Hundred is to proactively link military service members, recent veterans, Reservists, National Guard, and spouses (including Gold Star spouses) to the broad range of resources and opportunities in their local community dedicated to helping them transition to civilian life. Zero8Hundred derives its name from the daily military ritual of raising the American flag at 0800 hours (8:00 a.m.) to signal that a new day of work has begun. We provide transitioning service members (TSMs) with personalized 1:1 counseling and wraparound support from clinically trained Master Social Workers (MSW) for up to one year before and two years after their separation from military service.

Each TSM is matched with a Zero8Hundred Resource Specialist (MSW), who immediately begins a clinical assessment to address any critical needs and connects with clients to develop their transition plan. Needs may range from basic needs such as food and housing to employment support, continuing education, mental health support, financial advice, legal support, and/or health and wellness resources.

Resource Specialists work together with TSMs to map out a plan for re-entry, checking in regularly and providing referrals to our network of partnering organizations as needed to ensure they are, connected with resources to achieve their goals. When participants graduate from the program, we place them into our Veteran Alumni Network where we continue to track their outcomes and help keep them connected with community resources relevant to each stage of their Veteran Lifecycle. We also provide the same services to military spouses, who often face career challenges due to the frequent relocations and other demands of military family life.

University of San Diego: A Better Way to Your MBA

USD’s MBA is more flexible than ever — and tuition is fully covered for most military-connected students.

For both active duty service members and those transitioning out of the military, an MBA degree can be a powerful next step. The right program can help you take the skills you’ve already developed — discipline, teamwork and problem-solving — and add the business acumen required to make you a confident business leader. While a traditional MBA program can seem out of reach for a variety of reasons, the University of San Diego’s Knauss School of Business offers a newly revamped Flex MBA program that’s perfect for active duty service members and veterans.

Tuition Fully Covered for Most Military-Connected Students

For veterans considering an MBA, one major factor is being able to afford a highly ranked program. To address this, the University of San Diego took steps this year to ensure tuition is fully covered for most militaryconnected students. As a 100% Yellow Ribbon School, USD contributes funds towards tuition that the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill doesn’t cover.

“This additional investment in the Yellow Ribbon Program deepens our commitment to our active-duty

military, veterans and other military-connected students,” says Charlotte Johnson, JD, vice president for student affairs at USD. “The University of San Diego honors the sacrifice of these students and their families and I am so pleased we are able to support their education in this way.”

Ideal MBA Format for Military Members and Veterans

The time commitment to pursue an MBA can seem daunting for active duty or post-military members, especially for those who have families, don’t live near a reputable university, or aren’t able to make school a fulltime commitment. And while fully online MBA programs are available, they often can’t offer the same in-depth experience that an in-person program offers.

The Flex MBA at USD’s Knauss School of Business offers the best of both worlds. It is a part-time program with outstanding faculty that only requires students to come to campus in San Diego one weekend per month. The remaining coursework takes place online. The program begins spring semester and takes just 20-24 months to complete.

Being deployed or required to change duty stations in the middle of a semester is another common fear for active duty service members. USD’s Flex MBA offers practical accommodations for this situation, providing an option to finish classes fully online if the need arises.

Military-Friendly Campus

As a military-friendly campus, USD offers the supportive environment and resources that military-connected students need to succeed personally and academically. Currently, there are over 800 military-connected students studying at USD including active-duty, veterans, spouses, dependents and Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) members. (Plus, USD has served as headquarters for the San Diego NROTC program since 1982!)

Along with meeting like-minded peers at USD, veterans can find dedicated resources and military student support at the university’s Military and Veterans Program. The center serves as a welcoming space for students to study, mingle with peers or get some R&R between classes. In addition, those enrolled in the Flex MBA program at the Knauss School of Business are assigned a student professional development manager who will offer industry-specific career guidance and networking insights to find your perfect next step after graduation.

National University Proudly Supports the U.S. Military

National University (NU) has nurtured strong ties to the San Diego community and the military since its founding in 1971 by U.S. Navy Captain David Chigos. He understood that military-affiliated students had a need for a quality, flexible, and accessible approach to education. Since its inception, NU has proudly served active-duty and veteran students from all military branches as they have earned their college degrees at home, on base, and abroad.

Today NU provides relevant education to 40,000+ students nationwide of which one in four are servicemembers or veterans. With credential-rich pathways and a holistic approach to student support, well-being, and success, NU delivers world-class student experiences and has prepared its 220,000+ graduates for the next chapter of their lives.

Supporting the Whole You

National University’s innovative approach to education is about supporting the whole student. This approach includes providing the financial, academic, emotional, career, and family support needed to succeed in today’s fast-paced world. “We understand how to meet students where they are and help them get on the pathway to be successful,” said Dr. Mark D. Milliron, president and CEO of National University. “We are committed to helping them change their lives, improve the future of their families, and impact their communities.”

Financial Support

As a top 10 percent Military Friendly and Yellow Ribbon school, National University is committed to delivering exceptional services and offering financial benefits and resources to assist with educational expenses. NU accepts the post 9/11 “Forever” GI Bill, which reduces education costs for veterans and active-duty students. NU also offers military-specific scholarships for activeduty service members and their dependents and for eligible veterans, their spouses, and dependents. Our Veterans Affairs office can help you navigate the many affordable options available to use your benefits with purpose and make your career goals a reality.

Academic Support

As San Diego’s largest private nonprofit university, NU has designed bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and certificate programs specifically for military-affiliated students. NU’s flexible four-week and eight-week class formats are ideal for the deployment cycle of military personnel and help students reach their goals faster. NU offers transfer-friendly undergraduate and graduate degree programs to maximize as many previously earned credits as possible, including college credits from other accredited institutions, professional or technical certifications, and military training and experience.

Social & Emotional Support

National University is proud to create a culture that fosters success for student veterans and servicemembers. NU provides a comprehensive virtual and onsite Veterans Center staffed by military-affiliated employees to assist with the transition to campus life and an online learning format, as well as aid in the completion of educational and career goals. Further, our dedicated student wellness staff are trained to help military students address a variety of needs and provide a 360-degree supportive environment.

Career Pathways

National University offers more than 190 online and oncampus programs, including these programs popular among the military community:

• Vets to BSN: Accelerated track to pursue a career in nursing.

• Cybersecurity/Criminal Justice/Homeland Security and Emergency Management

• MBA and Organizational Leadership program

• Education/teaching degrees and credentials

Family & Community Support

A few of the ways that National University provides support to family members and the community include:

• Member of the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP) to help military spouses advance their careers and educational opportunities.

• Commitment as a First Responder in Veteran Employment to support employees who serve in the Guard and Reserve.

• Facilitating an Employee Resource Group for military spouse employees to build rapport and share remote employee best practices.

This month, Joel Riley, a Marine Corps Veteran, and NU student, was one of two recipients of the American Council on Education Students of the Year Award. While in the Marine Corps, Riley enrolled at National University and was able to apply 135 Joint Services Credits gained from technical and leadership schools toward his degree. Riley remained in school while embarking on two combat deployments. “It was a true challenge, but my professors were gracious and understanding when factors out of my control presented challenges,” he said.

“Joel Riley exemplifies National University’s mission of providing an accessible, world-class student experience that ensures student success through meaningful learning,” President Milliron said. “We are very proud of the good work that Joel is doing, and he serves as a role model to us all.”

National University is committed to continuing our legacy of nationally recognized support for our military.

NU is proud to serve those who have served, and we have been proudly serving our military and veteran community for more than 50 years.

Evangel University: Here to serve those who serve

We believe that the sacrifice and commitment of our nation’s service members should be recognized and rewarded. Evangel University has a connection with the military dating back to World War II. In fact, the very grounds upon which Evangel is built served as the O’Reilly General Hospital, an Army facility that opened in 1941 and treated more than 50,000 wounded soldiers. Serving our nation’s military members is a proud part of our heritage and a privilege we continue today.

Educational opportunities designed with you in mind

We are dedicated to thoughtfully supporting service members in their academic pursuits. Convenient fully online degrees are available, with multiple start dates throughout the year. Courses are delivered in five-week block formats with one course offered at a time. This flexible schedule is great for working adults with a busy life schedule.

Graduate and seminary degrees are also available, including the premier Chaplaincy program offered through a Master of Divinity degree at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary (AGTS), embedded at Evangel University. This popular program has provided chaplaincy training to over 200 active duty service members.

“AGTS is committed to preparing students for the next stage of their careers or ministries,” said Chaplain J.P. Smith, a 2016 AGTS graduate. “As a chaplain candidate at AGTS, I had the opportunity to conduct practical military training at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, West Point, New York, and Fort Gordon, Georgia while gaining elective credits toward my degree program.”

Smith reflects, “I have spoken with countless chaplain candidates who attended other seminaries, and one thing is evident – AGTS chaplain candidates were significantly ahead of their peers from other seminaries. AGTS provides the best training, support, and education.”

Customized support

We also recognize the extensive training that active and veteran service members have received and as such, we award credit for armed services education and training from the Joint Services Transcript (JST), according to the recommendations of the American Council on Education. Our driving focus is to provide for the needs of service members as they pursue education in their area of choosing.

The Admiral Vern Clark Veterans Center provides focused support to military families, including help with keeping track of required federal paperwork, connecting them with peers and mentors, and offering a comfortable place in which they can relax.

The center provides a wide-open door for service members and their families to feel at-home and cared for while pursuing their educational goals.

The Veteran’s Center Coordinator, Dane Moore, is a retired Master Sergeant and has used both Tuition Assistance and VA GI Bill benefits for many years.

“When I first started the VA process, I did not know where to start.” Moore said. “This is why we made easy to follow checklists that give veterans or dependents a step-by-step method to getting their well-deserved education benefits.”

Affordable and flexible options

As a yellow ribbon approved school, Evangel’s goal is to make the process of receiving an education both affordable and flexible. Our online courses maintain the same level of rigor as any classroom-setting course, while providing students with a flexible schedule and setting.

We accept military tuition assistance, and the Veterans Center coordinator is available for one-on-one customized support to help service members streamline the Veteran’s Administration (VA) and active-duty Tuition Assistance processes.

We have a long history of training military chaplains and providing a wide range of educational degrees to service members. We are here to help you with your education goals.

Unlock Your Academic Potential with Warrior-Scholar Project

Ease the transition from military service to college with dynamic, immersive academic boot camps that set veterans up for success in the classroom and beyond.

For many enlisted veterans, attending college is a necessary next step in transitioning to civilian life and securing a fulfilling career after serving. While this is an exciting new chapter, adjusting to college can be challenging, especially without the support and camaraderie found in the military. If you’re planning to return to school or are already enrolled in college, Warrior-Scholar Project can help ease the transition and bridge the gap from service to higher education.

Just like military boot camps instill essential skills, Warrior-Scholar Project’s (WSP) academic boot camps prepare veterans for success in higher education. WSP is a national nonprofit that helps enlisted veterans excel at four-year universities through immersive academic boot camps at some of the nation’s top colleges.

During a WSP academic boot camp, participants learn from university faculty at the partner institution and receive mentoring from highly successful student veteran fellows who have completed the WSP program. Students engage in analytical reading, writing, and other academic and practical skills critical to academic success.

These experiences help veterans adapt to campus culture and participate in the classroom. Additionally, participants gain insight into the challenges many student veterans face during their transition to college, including navigating the complex university application and admission processes.

WSP also provides workshops tailored to address the unique needs of veterans attending community colleges. All WSP programming is free for enlisted veterans and active-duty service members.

The WSP impact makes a difference: 100% of WSP participants recommend the program, and of the more than 2,500 WSP alumni, 88% have completed or are on track to earn a college degree, which compares to 54% of enlisted veterans using the Post-9/11 GI Bill and 61% of full-time civilian students.

“WSP was the perfect opportunity for me to learn vital academic skills in preparation for my transition back to higher education. I have grown in confidence and academic competence, and I am excited to use what I’ve learned to succeed at my new school this fall!” – Deborah Haddick, U.S. Army veteran and WSP Yale University alumna.

“WSP was more influential than I could have ever expected. I was pretty anxious on my way here, but the entire process fostered and reinforced such a motivating and positive mindset that I will carry throughout my entire academic journey. I would do it again a million times over.” – Adam Sherman, U.S. Navy veteran and WSP University of Illinois, UrbanaChampaign alumnus.

Jumpstart Your Education — Apply Today!

Warrior-Scholar Project is accepting interest forms and scheduling admissions calls for its 2025 academic boot camps. With partners at colleges nationwide, enlisted service members and student veterans have the unique opportunity to learn from esteemed university faculty in humanities, STEM, or business. Enlisted service members and veterans looking to jumpstart their education can learn more about the program and submit an interest form at www.warrior-scholar.org/apply.

WSP’s academic boot camps are designed exclusively for current and former enlisted service members who want to pursue higher education. In-person boot camps are one weeklong and occur from June through August, with online boot camps in December. During in-person boot camps, student veterans immerse themselves in the college experience, including staying in dorms, eating in the dining hall, and studying in historic campus libraries. Courses are offered at no cost to student veterans except for travel expenses.

Just like boot camp molded you into the service member you would become, our free on-site and virtual programs mold you into the college student you strive to be.

Cultivating New Beginnings Through Agricultural Training

At the Center for Land-Based Learning (CLBL), we believe that agriculture provides not only a meaningful career but also an opportunity to reconnect with the land, build community, and find purpose. Through our California Farm Academy (CFA) programs, veterans are discovering new ways to grow—both personally and professionally.

The California Farm Academy offers two distinct paths designed to help veterans transition into fulfilling careers in agriculture: our Beginning Farm Manager Apprenticeship Program and the Beginning Farmer Training Program.

A Hands-On Path to Leadership

For veterans seeking a structured, guided route into agriculture, our Beginning Farm Manager Apprenticeship Program partners with farm operations statewide to provide education and training with established farm mentors. Apprentices are hired on as paid employees of the farm operation where they’ll complete their apprenticeship. Over the course of roughly 18 months, apprentices complete 3,000 hours of on-the-job training plus 250 hours of coursework to gain practical experience, valuable skills, and professional connections that will propel them into a successful career in ag.

The apprenticeship is designed to cover both the practical and theoretical sides of farming, offering a comprehensive curriculum including irrigation management, plant science, and integrated pest management, as well as social science. Veterans emerge from the program with the skills needed to confidently step into farm management roles, prepared to lead operations and adapt to the everevolving agricultural landscape.

As Navy veteran Bobby Regan shared "I wish I would have found this program when I first got out [of the military]. Farming is a healing environment for me, so I wanted to pursue it." Since the program, Bobby has stepped into a role of Director of Cultivation.

The program is Veterans Administration (VA) approved, so eligible veterans can use their education assistance benefits while enrolled in the coursework. Veterans can also access their Veteran Readiness and Employment (VR&E) benefits, when applicable

For Veterans Looking to Start Their Own Farms

For veterans who have dreams of starting their own farm business, the Beginning Farmer Training Program offers a series of hands-on courses covering essential topics like business planning, financial management, irrigation systems, and animal husbandry. Participants can choose the subjects that most align with their goals or take the full series for a holistic understanding of what it takes to run a successful agricultural enterprise.

The flexible nature of the program can support veterans at different stages of their agricultural journey. Whether they're just beginning to explore farming or are ready to launch their own business, the program provides the knowledge, resources, and community connections necessary for success.

“I have been carrying around this plan in my head for some time... The program helped to put ideas on paper in the form of a business plan,” said Thelma Kisabuli, a 2024 graduate and Air Force veteran.

2025 classes will vary from hybrid to in-person courses in Woodland, CA. Additionally, we offer scholarships for veteran participants, eliminating financial barriers to success.

Why Agriculture?

For many veterans, farming offers more than just a job—it provides a sense of purpose and a way to continue serving their communities. The discipline, leadership skills, and adaptability cultivated during military service naturally transfer into agricultural work. Farming requires precision, problem-solving, and a commitment to sustainability, all qualities that veterans embody.

Thelma Kisabuli
Bobby Regan

At CLBL, we are committed to ensuring that veterans have the opportunity to thrive in this rewarding field. Agriculture provides a way to reconnect with the natural world, create sustainable systems, and make a tangible impact on the environment and local food supply.

The Center for Land-Based Learning: Building Leaders for 30 Years

The California Farm Academy is just one part of the Center for Land-Based Learning’s larger mission. For over 30 years, CLBL has been building both adaptive people and ecosystems by inspiring and training agricultural leaders. Our programs focus on sustaining natural resources while fostering the next generation of farmers, ranchers, and environmental stewards.

By supporting veterans through our specialized programs, we’re not only helping them succeed but also strengthening the future of agriculture.

Help Us Cultivate Future Farmers

As a nonprofit organization, our ability to provide these programs—and offer full scholarships for veterans—depends on the generous support of our community. Whether it’s donating funds, spreading the word, or partnering with us to offer opportunities for veterans, every contribution helps us continue this important work.

The Center for Land-Based Learning is proud to offer programs that empower veterans to grow, lead, and thrive in agriculture. If you or someone you know is a veteran interested in learning more about our California Farm Academy programs, visit our website at landbasedlearning.org for details on how to apply.

Your donations and support help us continue offering these opportunities to the men and women who have served our country.

Healthcare Careers: A Perfect Fit for Military and Civilian Life

Sometimes, the sense of division between life in the military and life as a civilian feels like a vast chasm. In fact, for military families, this sense of division joins a long list of challenges that specifically impact the men and women who sacrifice so much for the country. These challenges couldn’t be more apparent than when it comes to finding a post-military career or one that is flexible enough to align with military spouses’ unique needs—a career that checks all the right boxes: satisfaction, security, and stability.

Finding industries and employers that understand the skills of veterans and their families can seem like an uphill climb at times, and it shows. For example, the unemployment rate for veterans rose to 6.5% in 2020, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS). Reasons for this vary, but one contributing factor could be that lessons learned under the harsh conditions of combat don’t always translate to private-sector jobs. And for military spouses—60% of which say they’re looking for full- or part-time work—finding a profession that’s both portable and in-demand is increasingly difficult.

However, there is hope and there are opportunities. First, it’s important to consider key reasons why a career in healthcare—the fastest-growing sector in the U.S. economy according to BLS data—might just be what bridges that expansive gap between military and civilian life.

1. Meaningful Work

Most who enter the military are looking for fulfilling work—an opportunity to make a difference. A real difference. But few civilian careers allow veterans to make as much of a difference as those found in healthcare. That’s because working in this particular field, regardless of the role, provides the opportunity to impact peoples’ lives in profound ways. From mending wounds and healing minds to saving lives, the difference healthcare workers make is undeniable.

2. Transferable Skills

There’s a reason healthcare is an overwhelmingly popular career choice for veterans and their spouses: it’s an industry in which military-specific skills are undeniably relevant. Creative problem solving, adaptability, and effective communication—they’re all valuable skills that healthcare organizations can’t ignore if they want to provide the best possible service and care to their patients. And they’re all skills that veterans and their spouses already possess.

3. In-Demand Careers

People need healthcare. In turn, the industry needs people willing to step up to the proverbial plate.

Economic and labor experts believe we need to hire 2.3 million new healthcare workers by 2025 if we’re going to keep pace with the needs of our aging population. But a persistent shortage of skilled workers with exceptional knowledge and training means hundreds of thousands of positions will remain unfilled. Home health aides, medical assistants, lab technicians, and more are all in high demand.

4. Portable Jobs

For a working military spouse, it can be difficult to cultivate a strong professional network, and when the time comes to pack up and move to a new city, the wrong vocation can leave even the most talented pro scrambling to start over. That’s why job portability is so important. Healthcare training provides the skills and certifications that employers are looking for in highgrowth, high-demand fields in virtually every city in the entire world.

Supportive Training for Success

These days, there are multiple training options for learners to pave their road to success. These organizations often have hiring network relationships, so it’s important to keep in contact and inform them when certification is achieved. It’s especially important for members of the healthcare sector to be fully qualified and properly trained. An early step is to start by choosing a specific discipline and then find a provider that can help learners develop the concrete job skills employers are looking for.

The good news is that there’s a significant amount of trusted providers who specialize in transforming entrylevel learners into high-performing, certified healthcare professionals. And they all do this with expansive catalogs of fully online career training programs that are fast, portable, and eligible for military education grants—often covering up to 100% of the cost.

Finding the right fit takes a little time and it is important to explore the possibilities. Doing the research is crucial as it can improve the learning experience—and potentially lead to faster employment. Deciding to pursue a career in healthcare is a fulfilling and viable option for veterans and their spouses.
