I am a passionate Architect with Masters in Urban Design. My professional experience involves Architecture, Urban Design, Masterplanning and Interior Design – working with practices and organizations in Delhi, Hyderabad, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Amaravati and Paris. Apart from working across scales, my skill set spans across different aspects of a given project - inception, concept design, design development and execution. I also enjoy working in multi cultural and inter - disciplinary teams.

Amaravati, the new Capital City of the Southern Indian state of Andhra Pradesh is one of the most anticipated new city projects in the World, comparable in scale and significance to new city precedents such as Chandigarh, Brasilia, Astana and Putrjaya.

Have worked as part of the Project Core Architecture & Urban Design team, for Government of Andhra Pradesh in several interventions - City Masterplanning, Preparation of Urban Design Framework for Capital Precinct and Architectural Design of Iconic Civic Institutions.

1.1 AMARAVATI CITY MASTERPLAN & LANDPOOLING SCHEME Project Type: New City Development

Duration: 2015 - 2017

Location: Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA

Project Role: Part of the Core Masterplanning team for Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority (APCRDA)

Following the bifurcation of the state of Andhra Pradesh in 2014, it was decided to plan a new Capital City for the residual state. After several deliberations, site for the new city was finalized on the Southern bank of River Krishna between the existing towns of Vijayawada and Guntur. The city is to be developed in an extent of 217 sq.m, as part of a larger Capital Region of 8603 sq.km.

New City Precedents Amaravati is one of the most ambitious New City developments in the world at the moment. The project has tried to draw inspiration and learn lessons from New City precedents.

1. Amaravati Capital City

City Masterplan - Worked on the finalization of the Amaravati Capital Region and City Masterplan, as part of APCRDA Planning team in co-ordination with consulants Surbana Jurong from July 2015 to Feb 2016.

- The Capital City Masterplan is organized into 9 themed sub-cities and further into 27 townships; with a projected population of 3.5 million by 2050.

- Each township is about 2km x 2km, further sub divided into Neighbourhoods of 1km x 1km, which are in turn sub divided into Communities of 0.5km x 0.5km.

- Capital Region Plan was notified on 26th December 2015.

- Amaravati Capital City Masterplan was notified on 22nd February 2016.

Land Pooling Scheme Land pooling scheme (LPS) under the Section - 43 of Andhra Pradesh Capital Region Development Authority Act, 2014 was taken up as a participatory mechanism to procure lands in turn benefitting both the government and the citizens of the city.

Under this scheme land parcels owned by individuals or group of owners were legally consolidated by transfer of ownership rights to the Authority, which later transferred the ownership of a part of urban land back to the landowners for undertaking development of such areas.

The APCRDA initiated the process of registration of the returned plots in March 2017 and by March 2018; 13,480 registrations were completed covering 33,208 acres of land which include 59,014 returnable plots allotted to 23,903 land owners in 46 transparent electronic lotteries in 22 out of 24 villages. Infrastructure development is currently in progress in the LPS layouts and subsequently private developments will take shape. This kind of a participatory approach to land procurement and urbanization, is unprecedented across the world.

Neighbourhood Planning The City Masterplan is structured based on a hierarchical logic as illustrated below. Further, a typical township, neighbourhood, community are designed around community amenities such as school, healthcare, park, shops etc as the Nucleus, proportionate to the concerned scale in hierarchy.

1.2 MASTERPLAN & URBAN DESIGN OF AMARAVATI CAPITAL PRECINCT Project Type: Development of Civic Hub

Duration: 2015 - 2019

Location: Amaravati, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA

Project Role: Part of lead team for Project inception, Development of brief, Design Management for APCRDA (client) in co-ordination with Foster + Partners (Masterplan Consultant)

Amaravati Capital Precinct is envisioned to be the Administrative and Symbolic hub for the City and State of Andhra Pradesh at large. Spread over about 1375 Acres area, the precinct would house Iconic Civic Institutions of Legislature, High Court, Secretariat and other Government Establishments. Apart from this, it is a conscious intent to provide various mixed uses and vibrant public spaces to keep the Precint active at all times and accessible, friendly for people.

Site Area: 35 Acres Built up area: About 900,000 sq.ft Major Components: - Assembly hall (300 members) - Council hall (100 members) - Central hall (for joint sessions, multi-purpose) - Office space for Legislature administration - Public Gallery and Museum Features: The Legislature, centrally located in the grand Ceremonial Axis is itself the symbol of Democracy for the newly born state of Andhra Pradesh. Building is sited in a huge water body, lending it a regal presence.

The building is organized in four quadrants with central Spire of 250m height.

- The proposed design uses the Spire - like extension of the Grand Central Atrium to create a Landmark monument and a bold Urban Punctuation, easily recognizable with accentuated Verticality and distinct Architectural form.

- The Architectural expression of the building is seamlessly blended with the Structural system and Interior space.

- People would be able to effortlessly access the heart of the building, the Central Atrium space and experience activities at various levels of the Spire. At the same time, core functions of the building; Assembly, Council Halls and Office space are efficiently planned accommodating the ceremonial, circulation and security requirements of the Institution.

The project intends to create a Modern Administrative Hub for State Government’s Secretariat & HoD offices, with the intent to achieve best standards for employee wellness and productivity, while encouraging inter-departmental interaction.

Project Brief: Site Area: 4 Acres Built up area: About 250,000 sq.ft

Location: South of High Court Complex Site

Features: - The project is conceived to be a Multi-purpose Judicial building accommodating City Courts, Civil & Criminal Courts and Tribunals.

- The building comprises 22 Courthalls (1200 sft each).

- Courthalls are on 1st & 2nd floors, while public interface activities like filing are located on ground floor.

- The public and judges movement is clearly segregated in the floor layouts. Judges movement is around the inner courtyard, while public movement is along the external periphery of the building.

- This project was part of the larger consultancy to Government of Iran for development of High Speed Train network in Iran and Sub-urban railway network in the Tehran region.

- Worked on developing a prototype concept design for a typical sub-urban train station, in integration with the ‘Char-bagh’ style garden layout for the station precinct.

Duration: February 2018 (Competition Proposal)

Location: Riga, LATVIA

Project Role: Worked as part of the design team in Studio International at AREP Group, Paris The specific technical requirements of the Air traffic control tower were carefully worked out and accommodated in the design in co-ordination with Engineering consultants.

A ‘hyperbolic paraboloid’ structural frame in Wood was proposed, in response to Latvia’s rich heritage of wood architecture.

International Urban Design workshop organized by ‘Les Ateliers, France’ to propose a Vision for 2050 for La Defense, the business district of Paris.

Our proposal titled ‘Reverse Paradox’ intended to highlight the paradoxes of a 20th century style business district i.e La Defense in the context of present day globalization and digital technology. Through this, we proposed design strategies to help La Defense adapt to changing needs and to find relevance in 2050.

Annavaram is a prominent Hindu temple in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is located on a hill top, with a supporting settlement downhill.

Ratnagiri Area - Proposed plan for the uphill core temple precinct

Emphasis on Cultural activities and pilgrim amenities planned around landscaped and pedestrian friendly public spaces

Clear delineation of temple core area pedestrianization, punctuation of landscape elements and public spaces

- The proposed site plan attempts to lend a sense of coherence. The uphill temple area is re-organized to bring back clarity to the main temple core area in the overall silhouette. The core area is designed as a pedestrianized unified entity around the main temple and complementary to the temple itself. A shuttle bus hub is proposed to ease the ingress and egress of pilgrims.

- The main temple core is delineated with a porous edge by means of open Mandapams and trees. The large public plaza comprising the Ram temple and Kalyana Mandapam is to be revitalized , by means of tree plantation and grass jointed paving, while shops will be segregated to a lower level.

- An amphitheater is proposed as multi-purpose cultural space. It would seat about 1500 people at a time. It could be used for various cultural activities, and also for light and sound shows considering the main temple and Gopuram would form it’s backdrop. Additionally, a cultural center and Museum is proposed on Ratnagiri.

Tirumala temple has one of the highest number of visitors (annual) in India.

Was invited to prepare an Urban Design proposal Tirumala core area by HMDA. Following are salient features of the proposal: - Redesign of Mada streets (procession streets) around the main temple complex, such that the streets (alongwith built edge) define a new outer prakaram (enclosure) for the core.

- Reconstruction of thousand pillared mandapam.

This project is Vedic School run by Annavaram Temple Authority. Specific requirements of pedagogy and spaces had to be incorporated in the design. Some of the design features in response to the character of Vedic school are: - Low rise clustering to create the layout of a Vedic Village or Gurukul.

- Classrooms and Student dormitories organized around courtyards to create easy transition of indoor and outdoor.

- Local bricks and terracota tiles used with traditional non-RCC construction techniques.

The project involves the remodelling of a twenty year old house at Sainikpuri, Hyderabad.

This included Interior renovation, external additions, renewed Architectural expression and Landscape design.

The design intervention is themed to imbibe Kerala Architectural elements, to reflect the family’s Malayali background.

The project involves the interior design and execution for a Villa in a Privately developed Residential community.

The design uses locally relevant materials and craftsmanship to lend a culturally rooted richness to the interior spaces. The project also involved architectural spatial intervention withing the confines of the framework, as delivered to the client by the project developer.

Project Components: - 20 Serviced Apartments (2BHK & 3BHK) - Reception lounge, Lobbies - Rooftop Restaurant, Conference facilities - Transit workspaces, indoor games Design Concept: Making use of the site profile and utilizing views of the adjoining open spaces to arrive at the architectural form.

Receding terraces have been introduced to offer spillout / gathering spaces at various levels.

Project Role: Architect & Researcher at URBZ / Institute of Urbanology, Mumbai

The project is a Community Mosque in a marginalized neighbourhood of Mumbai called Shivaji Nagar.

The project involved regular consultations with the Community representatives to understand their functional, cultural and aesthetic requirements. Availability of materials and prevalent construction practices of the informal settlement was also considered.

Design challenge was to project a symbolic aspirational landmark for the community in a starkly marginalized context.

Project Details: - 1200 seater Auditorium at Kakatiya University - Built up area: 40,000 sq.ft - Chosen as the First prize winning entry in a design competition for the project The locally prevalent Chalukyan temple Architecture comprises cells each of which is a star. With this inspiration, the form of the proposed auditorium was derived by rotation of squares.

Thesis - A Search Urban Design today, is at the threshold of a new kind of transformation- that brought about by ‘bits and bytes’. It is essential to understand how our urban environments would get challenged in social, physical and philosophical terms; to envision an urban scenario in the digital era.

Digital network technology has brought about a virtual information realm parallel to our physical urban realm. Recognising this, the thesis behind the project is that; design of urban form and space would have to increasingly take into account the play of digital information in space in addition to traditional play of masses and light. The project explores the relation between the two realms - physical & virtual; to be able to arrive at an urban design agenda and strategies.

Global Economic Restructuring and the 21st Century Networked Agglomeration The Financial District area Cyberabad in Hyderabad is chosen as the site to test the Thesis. 6.1 KONKAN RAILWAY STUDY Project Type: Research Project supported by Mobile Lives Forum, Paris

Supported by the Mobile Lives Forum in Paris, this study attempts to reframe the idea of belonging in a way in which the village and the city become part of a simultaneous spatial logic and not as something that involves a sense of the past (rural) and the present (urban). They are both part of a dynamic present, defined by the lives of many types of people and generations.

Millions of Indians live away from their ancestral regions, but nonetheless remain connected to their familial villages.

The mass exodus from rural India does not simply end in hyper-dense urban centres. It loops back to villages which are transforming as rapidly as cities.

An immense number of families from Mumbai, New Delhi, Bangalore or Chennai maintain two homes – a small crowded one in the city, as well as the one they invest in, back in the village. The Indian village does not belong to the past as much as it does to the future – a future that is resolutely urban, networked and circulatory. In which the railway plays a crucial role in helping city dwellers maintain active links with their places of origin. For many Mumbaikars, home is here and there, stretched between two inescapable and complementary polarities. The exhibition depicts the circulatory journey of urban families between their neighbourhoods in Mumbai and their villages in the Konkan. It also reimagines the relationship between the urban and the rural and invites Mumbaikars to write their own circle of connections into the story.

I worked on the 3d mapping of passenger movements in a regional network around the Konkan Railway line in Western India.

The Research project was presented at the Mobile Lives Forum in Paris in November 2013.

6.2 DWELLING IN THE REALM OF ‘PARADOX’ TOWARDS AN ARCHITECTURAL PARADIGM Project Type: Research Paper published at International Conference

This Research paper of mine was published at the ‘Long lasting buildings in urban transformation’ conference, held in Beijing, China in November 2012.

Abstract: If we are to recognize that life and architecture are part of a larger phenomenon of nature and the cosmos, we would realize that they are part of a never-ending process of creation or the process of becoming. This process is continuously fed by various inherent contradictions. The constant struggle to deal with these dual tendencies is essential to ‘existence’ in the larger sense. Hence, the notion of ‘long lasting architecture’ in the context of the perennial ‘process of becoming’, itself has an inherent paradox.

Today, we are part of a network culture driven by digital network technology. Over the last 20 years or so, it has shaped the dynamics of contemporary society creating a whole new set of relationships which now drive the world. We live in a state of paradox in trying to deal with the unprecedented contradictions posed by this shift. Our frame of mind is desperately struggling and swaying between simultaneous conflicting tendencies.

With this picture in mind, the paper ponders whether architecture is a solution, a remedy or a mere reflection of these transformations.

The fundamental premise is that the paradox cannot and should not be resolved or camouflaged. It should be expressed and made integral to the architectural process. With this intent, the paper hopes to project an agenda to help dwell in the realm of ‘paradox’.

6.3 ADAPTING TO A CULTURE OF TRANSIENCE - DESIGN METHODOLOGY FOR THE 21ST CENTURY CITY Project Type: Research Paper published at International Conference

This Research paper of mine was published at the ‘Architecture in the fourth dimension’ conference, held in Boston, USA in November 2011. I was presented the ‘Young Researcher Award’ at the Conference for this paper.

Abstract Built environment is a continuously evolving dynamic entity. The role of designers is to mediate between stability and change.

Design is thus an act of morphing built form and space to align people and their environment with change, yet retaining the vitality of fundamental human needs– dwelling, community and place. The transient nature of the built environment and indeed life is as crucial as the three physical dimensions of our perception.

This paper explores the above discussed theme in the context of today’s ‘network culture’, where digital network technology has become a dominant cultural logic. Contemporary life increasingly dwells in the virtual information realm, apart from our familiar physical environs. Boundaries of time and space are shrinking, and fundamental notions of ‘program’ and ‘typology’ are being challenged. Consequently, built environment will be characterized by homogeneity and generic nature of spatial use and character.

Having said so, the ‘atemporality’ and ‘location free’ nature of activities and virtual interactions that have become possible, should only reinforce the need for the ‘local’ / ‘specific’ / ‘physical’. This forms the premise to envision a new adaptable spatial system equipped to bring about an appropriate local-global / real-virtual relationship.

Worked as Research assistant for Prof. IM Chishti’s (Professor at SPA Delhi) presentation titled, ‘Easing the bottlenecks – a vision for Delhi’; presented at the mAAN (modern Asian Architecture Network) conference in Delhi, March 2009; subsequently published as an article in the April 2012 issue of Indian Architect & Builder magazine.

Abstract Easing the bottlenecks: Pending the realization of the ‘utopia of an ideal city’, can we redeem what is redeemable ? Can we fix what is fixable ?

‘Delhi - Easing the bottlenecks’ is a reflex action in that direction.

Using Delhi as a case, it attempts to propose a vision for change. Change realized through multiple layered inventive Urban Design moves. Moves based on and derived from existing conditions - physiographical, morphological, movement related and others. Change, which can be implemented despite complexities at the decision making levels.

Change that has the possibility of finding an echo in other Asian cities where more than 62% of the total world population is already living. Soon, very soon when these statistics would have bloated beyond control to include two-thirds of humanity it may already be too late, with not too many choices before us.

So, where does that leave us ? Do or Die? Do, I suppose !
