BHOPAL, MADHYA PRADESH Bhopal, located in the central part of India is just North of the upper limit of Vindhya mountain ranges. It is the capital of the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and is the administrative headquarters of the Bhopal District and Division.

The city has an average elevation of 500 meters (1401 ft.) with small hills within its boundaries. The city’s geoagraphy has in it two lakes, namely the Upper Lake and the Lower Lake and is most commonly referred to as the “CITY OF LAKES”.

Bhopal is the 17th largest city in the country and the 131st in the world.

ZONAL DEVELOPMENT PLAN: The Zonal Development Plan was prepared under the provisions stated within the Master Plan of Bhopal. It provided a distinct link between the Plan and the recently composed smart city guidelines. According to the Master Plan of Bhopal 2021, the city has been divided into 14 major planning zones. Our project dealt with preparing a detailed development plan for Zone - 14, Bhopal.

VISION: The Vision of our Zonal Development Plan was to prepare a long term perspective of 20 years, stating both the existing as well as the proposed land use for the future growth of population and infrastructure development.

The structural planning approach was adopted for the preparation of our Zonal Plan. The Plan was prepared as a result of the structural approach, is often associated with “Greenfield Development”, but the study performed included both “Greenfield” & “Brownfield Development”. This approach helps complement planning tools such as Urban Design Guidelines, Frameworks and Precinct Plans.

The goal defined as a result of the proposed Metro Plan of Bhopal is to offer - (i) A Rail based Sustainable Urban Transport System; (ii) Smart and Healthy city to increase the quality of life and better the access to goods, services, employment opportunities and sustainable development; (iii) Climate change mitigation resulting in a livable city environment i.e. health supportive environment with more allocation of road space to people rather than the vehicles.

PLANNING APPROACH & DESIGN: The AIM of the project was to increase the capacity of the existing developed urban land by increasing the infrastructure, so as to free areas for green spaces and redevelopment projects for better optimum use. The system consists of a network of 80 kms with lines overlapping and branching - on road, on bridges and underground in certain locations, Out of a total of 5 corridors, 2 corridors have been proposed (i) Karond Square to AIIMS (14.99 kms); and (ii) Bhadbhada Square to Ratnagiri Tiraha (12.882 kms)

The major objective of the Zonal Development Plan prepared was to achieve a Comprehensive Transport Model for both the Karond Junction as well as the Krishi Upaj Mandi, in order to connect the entire city with the chosen study area i.e.

Zone - 14.

The designs have been made to ensure swift pedestrian and traffic movement within the study area.

2021. The Berasia Road and the Karond Bypass Road is proposed to have a ROW of 45m and 60m respectively.

• Both the Mandi as well as the Junction is proposed to have an elevated metro which would cater to the population.

• To reduce the risk of pedestrian accidents by the ongoing traffic in the area a subway proposal was designed across the 45m and 60m road proposal.

• Junction Improvement - Eliminate the excess traffic observed at the Junction.

• Road Widening - Based on the proposals given within the Bhopal Master Plan

The Aim of the project was to identify the various forms of informality. Informal economic activity is a dynamic process which includes various aspects of economic and social theory. Vendors are a common informal sight observed in all of the selected locations. The type of activity performed and the educational qualifications of each of the street vendors was analyzed in the localities. Most vendors observed lacked a legal backing to the system of informal activity performed.

POSSIBLE SOLUTIONS IDENTIFIED: • Zonal Level Plans need to be prepared • Better facility and service provisions are to be met for effective working of the vendor communities.

• The size of the vending site must not exceed (6 x 4 sq. ft.) open.

• The timings need to be regularized based on the seasons and the stakeholder demands within the area of working.

A holistic approach towards addressing the mitigation of informal activities have to be met for the betterment of the unorganized working community as well as the socio-economic group associations.

The Government of India has also brought about schemes to help alleviate the conditions of the informal sector in the society. Statistically, it has been observed that the informal society still holds 90% of the workers within its economy. Therefore, a resilient system needs to be created, in order to encourage the system of informality to partially dissolve from the society.

Bangalore has recently shown a steady increase in its traffic scenario. One of the key functionalities in the field of transportation in any urban area, is its mobility forms. The mobility indicators are based on the comprehensive analysis of the city.

The urban mobility indicators, compare the data provided, in terms of prospective conditions of the future and conditions of the current framework.

The city has faced various competitions, regarding the lack of suitable comprehensive information on the different issues based on mobility. The Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) has taken an initiative since 2008, to address the issues faced by the city and to track the progress of various transportation interventions. Cities that practise performance measurement based on guidelines are likely to influence mobility solutions. They help to distinguish whether a system performance is improving or not to the public based on its policy and decisions. This study makes an effort to making a comparative statement of the present and past indicator levels. Also, the set of service level benchmarks for Bangalore city (developed by Ministry of Urban Development) is established.

AN INDO-DUTCH PROJECT

THE KUMBH MELA EXPERIMENT

Ujjain Simhastha is a Hindu religious mela held every 12 years in the Ujjain city of Madhya Pradesh, India. The name derives from the fact that it is held when the Jupiter is in Leo. The Kumbh Mahaparv is held at four locations in India Haridwar, Prayag (Allahabad), Ujjain and Nasik.

At Ujjain, the Kumbh Mahaparv is specifically called THE SIMHASTH KUMBH MAHAPARV. The holy dip in the river Kshipra is taken on an auspicious day at a defined time at which it is believed that the NECTAR from KUMBH was dropped in the pious river of Kshipra. It is believed that taking a dip in the river Kshipra during this occasion purifies the soul and overcomes all the past sins.

Around, 5 crore (50 million) pilgrims were a part of the Mela to take a holy dip in the river. The pilgrims visited the MAHAKALESHWAR (Lord Shiva Temple) and other ancient temples, in and around Ujjain and thereafter devoted themselves to the offerings, celebrations and prayers held at the Mela.

Research Methodology • Service quality parameters were identified from the foundational approach developed

by PARASURAMAN ET. AL (5 Dimensions Tangible, Reliability, Responsiveness, Assurance and Empathy).

• Parameteres were measured on a likert scale and modified to meet the determined SERVQUAL dimensions.

• Sampling of the data (39 items that qualified for the 5 dimensions proposed for service quality).

• Analysis of the data through reduction technique - FACTOR ANALYSIS (EFA technique).

The cut off for analysing the factor loadings was 0.4.

• Pattern matrix was created during the cleaning process for the data.

• The factors determined after obtaining a perfect pattern matrix was used to form the factors/ dimensions for the SERVQUAL analysis

The island country shares its southern maritime border with Indonesia’s Riau Islands, its northern, western, and eastern maritime borders with the Johor state of Peninsular Malaysia, and is in vicinity of Sumatra to its west and Borneo to its east. It is enveloped by the littoral waters of the Johore strait to its north and the Singapore strait to its south, and is geographically positioned within the confluence of the Indian and Pacific Oceans, being bounded by the Malacca Strait to its west and the South China Sea to its east. The country’s territory is composed of one main island, 63 satellite islands and islets, and one outlying islet, the combined area of which has increased by almost 25% since the country’s independence as a result of extensive land reclamation projects.

INNOVATION DISTRICT - THE FOURTH PLACE We within our broad concept of creating an Innovation District analyse the existance of a fourth place. We in our vision want to create a new social environment to help blur the conventional separation between ‘WORK’ and ‘LIVING’ environments.

My Contribution Worked on developing a concept Master Plan for the brown field site of the Paya Lebar Air Base. The plan design is an inspiration of a conventional leaf structure revolving around a central runway urban spine (the leaf midrib). We also develop a detailed urban design plan for a section of our runway to demonstrate its character and multi - functional nature.

Learning from the leaf, the master plan adopts how a leaf forms resilience through its network loops. With the concept, road networks (veins) and urban spine (mid rib) forms the main food network loop, allowing for human and activities transportation, as well as formation of smaller neighbourhoods.

FOOD LAB 2050 Climate change, volatile political situations and unprecedented virus outbreaks constantly threaten Singapore’s food security. However, with innovative urban solutions and technologies, Singapore can now see a more food secured future as Food-LAB will be the hub for food production and innovation in meeting future food and nutrition demand.

Food-LAB will extend Singapore’s goal to achieve 50% of self-sufficiency for food in 2050 and beyond. With a total of 430ha of land for food-related industries (primary producers, supporting direct and indirect industries), operating on advanced production technologies, symbiosis and stacking, Food-LAB will meet local and visitor food demands of about 1,011,840 tons annually.

My Role Research Assistant (Leading the investigation on future of urban mobility; and contributing to well-balanced ecology, masterplanning and urban design)

My Contribution To research, analyse and document studies conducted on redeveloping and repurposing existing sites in Singapore.

Investigate planning visions and design strategies for the redevelopment of the PLAB area as a future-ready urban region. Review and prepare reports for submission to the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA) of Singapore.

HERITAGE DEVELOPMENT

• To create an urban environment that is resilient to impacts of climate change, such as higher ambient temperature and rising sea levels.

• Reimagining the spatial and functional repurposing of the iconic Paya Lebar runway in the development of regional identity.

• For efficient utilization and closing of resource loops such as water, energy, waste, etc., that is resilient to potential resource shortage.

• To enhance and optimize the performances of the physical environment, such as daylight availability, natural ventilation, harvesting renewable energy, etc.

NEW ECONOMIC & TECHNOLOGICAL PARADIGMS • To provide flexible spatial solutions to accommodate innovative industrial operations that adopt automation, new modes of production and cleaner technologies.

• To provide flexible spatial solutions to accommodate and facilitate new work practices and sharing economies.

• To offer spatial support for new modes of production, logistics, retail and e-commerce.

COMMUNITY HARMONY • To provide high-density spatial solutions to cater to future lifestyles and the lifecycle needs of residents, including to facilitate and enhance the quality of active ageing within community.

• To create community environment that promote health and wellness of residents.

• To provide planning guidelines that promotes inclusivity, strengthen social resilience, sense of identity and sense of belonging.

• To explore and recommend spatial solutions that allow for greater flexibility and adaptability at different spatial scales.

• Integrate the existing landforms and vegetation in the open space and ecology network.

• Integrate existing buildings of significant architectural or heritage value.

FUTURE OF URBAN MOBILITY • To create car-lite transportation and mobility networks to reduce the use of vehicles and enhance urban mobility.

• Facilitate the deployment of novel modes of transportation such as autonomous vehicles (AVs), electric vehicles (EVs) new modes of public transportation and personal mobility devices (PMDs).

Vegetation density of PLAB and the surrounding areas. Landsat-8 satellite image available on an open source platform, USGS EarthExplorer, is used to derive the normalised difference vegetation index (NDVI) in ArcGIS. The NDVI map is indicative of vegetation density in which the higher the values, the denser the vegetation.
