The Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory

In the quiet woods of Tupper Lake, where pines stand sentinel beneath a tapestry of stars, the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory weaves a narrative that spans from the rocky Adirondack peaks to the farthest reaches of the cosmos. It’s a place where each star holds a chapter, and every visitor becomes part of an unfolding celestial tale.

The Sky Center was born from a simple yet profound ambition: to bring the universe down to Earth for everyone.

Nestled at the crossroads of the Adirondack Mountains, it emerged from the former Adirondack Public Observatory into a beloved regional treasure named among America’s top 22 observatories by Space Tourism Guide in 2022. Its mission is clear— use wonder to inspire curiosity, and science to provide perspective.

Few settings rival the Center’s RollOff-Roof Observatory. With humidity low, altitude high and light pollution nearly nonexistent, Telescopes peer

into a cosmos that seems to shimmer just beyond reach. When the roof glides open, it feels as if the heavens have drawn back a curtain. Then come the laser-guided constellation tours, high-resolution video feeds of distant galaxies, and live telescope views of Saturn’s rings and lunar craters— moments of discovery to share and savor under a boundless sky.

“We’re really an observatory for the people,” said Seth McGowan, President of the Sky Center and

retired Tupper Lake Central School District superintendent. “People can be intimidated by the cosmos, especially with images pouring in from powerful space telescopes. But our goal is to let everyone feel like they belong to the universe”.

That ethos animates every public event. Free observing nights run yearround, weather permitting, guided by a constellation of volunteers—retired teachers, amateur astronomers, and academic researchers—who blend hard data with storytelling. A laser pointer tracing Orion might segue into a discussion of gravitational waves or the latest Webb telescope discoveries, reminding each guest that science and story are inseparable.

With humidity low, altitude high and light pollution nearly nonexistent, Telescopes peer into a cosmos that seems to shimmer just beyond reach.

On the horizon lies another chapter: a state-of-the-art, 60-seat digital planetarium and multipurpose venue. Design development is complete and led by Envision Architects. When complete, the planetarium will transform rainy nights and winter’s long shadows into immersive journeys through time, space and imagination. In the meantime, weekly shows currently occur in the Sky Center’s portable planetarium at

The Roll Off Roof Observatory (RORO) is situated on six acres at 178 Big Wolf Road. It gets its name from the 4,000 lb roof that literally rolls off via motor when the building is open for public observing. After the last visitor leaves for the night, the astronomers roll the roof closed to protect the high-powered telescopes inside.

their Astronomy Hub located on Park Street in Tupper Lake.

What sets the Adirondack Sky Center & Observatory apart is its soul. It’s in the gasp of a child spotting Jupiter’s moons for the rst time. It’s in the hush of an adult rediscovering the Milky Way. It’s in the invitation to step out of daily noise and stand in awe of something far greater than ourselves.

So come to Tupper Lake. Step into the Roll-Off-Roof Observatory, tune in to the Rocket Lab and one day, settle into the planetarium’s glow. In the Adirondacks, every star has a story— and at the Sky Center, those stories welcome you home.
