“I dream of a tent that I can throw up into the air and it assembles itself”, said one tester in 2003. Two years later, his dream had become a reality!

Trekking becomes Forclaz

Quechua decides to focus exclusively on hiking and camping. This was the birth of Forclaz, a brand dedicated to trekking.

We work by the side of the mountain !

Our international design centre, the Mountain Store, is at the foot of Mont Blanc, 20 kilometres from Chamonix. It’s practical for innovating!

Whenever we (eco-)design a product, our team can test it on the ground, and also have it tested by hiking enthusiasts. That really allows us to work on the details and remain constantly creative. And as we are the first to use the products we create, we make sure they are flawless in terms of comfort, performance and ergonomics.

Since the launch of our 2 Seconds tent in 2005, we have constantly invented and reinvented hiking. So that your hardworking legs can breathe, we have designed modular trousers, which turn into shorts with one easy action. For fans of road trips, we have created the Van500 rooftop tent. We have also integrated new technologies into our textiles and equipment to make our products even more ingenious. For example, the Fresh & Black system features a combination of fabrics that naturally regulate the temperature and luminosity of the tent!

For us, ingenuity also means thinking about the planet. It is impossible to love nature and mountains without taking action to preserve them! So we actively defend the eco-hiking Leave No Trace principles by collecting rubbish and, for more than ten years, through eco-design. Like our recycled polyester fleeces, designed using plastic bottles. Or our dope dyed fabrics, a technique that uses less water than traditional dyeing, and discharges less wastewater. One of our hiking credos is : aiming for peak sustainability in everything we do.

Our eco-design criteria

Our design teams have created a strict framework to define this process. The relevant products must meet one of these two criteria :

1.Their environmental impact must be at least 10% less than the previous model for at least two of the following indicators: climate change, air pollution, water pollution and resource depletion.

2. They must be able to prove certain specific design actions : at least 50% of the product made from recycled polyester, fabric comprising 90% organic cotton, use of dyes that consume less water, etc..

Why choose polycotton ?

The Polycotton, also known as Technical Cotton, has the following benefits :

• better resistance to UV

• better breathability than a traditional polyester tent

• a longer lifespan

• a more lightweight tent than a 100%-cotton tent

• a more pleasant living environment, in terms of sound reduction, for instance. Still, remain vigilent because Polycotton is a fabric that requires special attention when drying and when cleaning off stains.

Polycotton maintenance

As part of the tent is made of cotton, the canvas must be completely dry before it is stored in order to avoid mould. It is also important to keep the tent clean and to clean stains as soon as possible. Dust should be removed with a soft brush.

How do you pitch your tent?

Setting up your tent for a good night’s sleep: Here are some tips to improve how you place your tent and make your camping or bivouac setup a success!

Prepare the base well to efficiently pitch your tent.

In order for your tent to form its correct shape, it is important to stretch the tent on the ground using the lower hooks. If you can make a smooth rectangle, there is a good chance that your tent will be perfect when it’s set up! For tents that have straps at all four corners, we recommend that you loosen them as much as possible so that you can easily adjust the shape of the tent at the end by adjusting the tension of the straps.

For the majority of our tents the poles have the same colour as the corresponding sleeve so that you can easily spot them. We recommend that you set up all the poles before erecting the tent so that you are more efficient once you start putting the poles into the sleeves.

For inflatable tents such as the Air Seconds, if you position the base of the poles outwards before you start inflating you will gain more living space.

Not too much and not too little: adjusting the guy ropes.

We all instinctively tend to try to tighten the guy ropes as much as possible.

In reality, as they are there to increase the wind resistance of the tent, it is important to allow for some flexibility, as too much tension can crush your tent which leads to a wider door opening or the possibility of rainwater seeping in.

Planting pegs into the ground.

Finally, to ensure that your tent stays in place, you need to plant the pegs properly! To ensure that the pegs stay in place, so that the tent doesn’t blow away in a gust of wind, you need to pitch them at a 45° angle, facing away from the tent.

Do you want to be sure that your tent is correctly pitched? Opening and closing the tent will easily give you the answer. If, when opening and closing your door the zips don’t flow easily, or you have to force on them, the chances are that the tension of your tent is too tight or not tight enough. You’re ready for your adventure, see you there!

Don’t throw away your tent, repair it !

The ecological impact of a discarded tent is equivalent to that of travelling more than 3,000km by car. To limit this impact, all Quechua and Forclaz tents can be repaired. Do you need to change an arch ? Replace a bedroom ? You have two possible solutions :

When one of the zips on your awning, tent or sportswear is broken, it soon becomes a big problem. To unblock or repair it without any fuss, follow this guide!

The good news is, that when a zip gets stuck or breaks it is usually possible and easy to fix it! So before putting to one side your sports shorts, backpack or camping gear, extend its life by following our zip repair guide.

How do you unblock a zip that’s stuck?

Sometimes the slider gets stuck on the zip and you can no longer lower or raise it. This is one of the easiest problems to solve! No need for any specific equipment, you will find at home everything you need to loosen it: a candle, soap or a pencil.

Rub candle wax or the bar of soap on both sides of the teeth where the slider is stuck. If you are using a pencil go over the notches of the teeth with the pencil, as if you wanted to colour them. Once you’ve done this pull gently the zip up or down. If this doesn’t work, go through the process once more.

Slider problem: how do you fix it and put the slider back in place?

Even if the puller head is still well positioned on the zip, sometimes it continues to open above and below it. The puller head may also lean towards one side of the zip.

In either case, the zip no longer works correctly, therefore it is important to repair it.

How do I repair a hole in an inflatable mattress?

Self-inflating camping mattress BASIC

Which mattress should you choose ?

Self-inflating or inflatable: there are several systems for inflating your mattress.

Inflatable mattresses are suitable for campers, because they generally need a pump to be inflated. They are usually thicker than the others and replicate the sensations of a real bed base. Some mattresses are fitted with a seconds valve which allows them to be inflated quickly thanks to the Venturi effect, which speeds up the flow of air delivered into the mattress.

There are also self-inflating mattresses, which are made of an impermeable outer layer stuck onto an open-cell foam in which the air circulates. The mattress regains its form and thickness when unfolded and fills with air. Self-inflating mattresses generally inflate to 60% just by leaving the valve open. Inflation then has to be completed by mouth to adjust the pressure to your desired comfort level.

How to clean your sleeping bag ?

The maintenance of your sleeping bag depends on its filling.

Is your sleeping bag quilted ?

• Place your sleeping bag in the drum of your washing machine.

• Add two or three tennis balls (new balls or balls previously washed with bleach). These balls will allow better threshing of the sleeping bag and it will wash better without becoming damaged.

• Wash it at 30°, but do not spin dry.

• Dry the sleeping bag in the open air.

Is your sleeping bag filled with down ?

The golden rule is to wash the down as infrequently as possible. That said, if you want to wash it, here is how to do so :

• Place your sleeping bag inside out in the drum of your washing machine.

• Add two or three tennis balls (new balls or balls previously washed with bleach). These balls will allow better threshing of the sleeping bag and it will wash better without becoming damaged.

• Wash at 30° on a delicate programme using a special down washing powder.

• Rinse it several times and use a very slow, gentle spin programme.

• Put it in the dryer at a low temperature and on a delicate programme, still with the tennis balls.

• Finish drying it in the open air, ideally in the sun, and on both sides to prevent the down clumping.

Always ensure that your sleeping bag is completely dry before putting it away.

How to choose the right lighting ?

How do you know which light intensity, between 40 and 400 lumens, to choose ? A camping lamp has a very specific use. So how do you decide ?

There are three criteria for choosing a light: the number of people to be illuminated, the time the lamp will be used for and comfort of use in an outdoor environment.

Number of people to be illuminated. Our range includes lamps for one person (40 lumens), two people (100 lumens), 4 people (200 lumens), and up to 8 people (400 lumens).

Usage time.

Linked to the autonomy of the lamp, expressed in number of hours at a given power. The average time we use as a basis is 2.5 hours of use per evening.

Our range is from one to six evenings without having to recharge your lamp or change its batteries.

Comfort of use.

Depends on its compactness : the more compact a lamp, the easier it will be to move and transport it. Its shape provides stability and the possibility of hanging it up and having several lighting modes for greater visual comfort.

Always fresh !

It’s time to set off on holiday ! Your car boot is full. All you have left to do is load the last few things. And head off for a few days or weeks of adventures. And all with a minimum of comfort and food, because nature gives you an appetite.

Some tips and advice for choosing and using your cool box and making sure your food and drinks stay fresh. In short, for keeping you protected from unpleasant surprises.

Before departure : Consider cooling your cool box or cool bag by avoiding leaving it in direct sunlight and keeping it in a cool place. And above all prepare your ice blocks or cool bags and place them in the bottom a few hours beforehand. Of course, just before you fill your cool box or bag to leave, replace them with ice blocks fresh from the freezer. Bonus: you can add frozen bottles of water or fruit juice.

During your stay : Avoid opening and closing your cool box too often. We won’t give you the scientific explanations, but in simple terms when you open the cool box, warm air enters and makes the ice blocks you placed at the bottom melt more quickly.

A good idea for avoiding too many comings and goings in your “fridge” is to have a second cool box in which you keep cold drinks. A cool bag also works !

Another good idea :

Consider changing the ice blocks regularly. At campsites, it is often possible to ask reception to put them in the freezer for a few hours. So take enough ice blocks to allow you to alternate. And one last good idea (oh yes, we have lots of them) : make a list of the contents of the cool box or store foods in boxes that are easily recognisable by the colour of their lids. This is practical so you don’t have to empty everything out to find the yogurt or butter at the bottom.

Making flasks more and more sustainable is what we have tried to do at Quechua since the very beginning. Because such an iconic hiking product can have a significant impact on the environment. We have spent more than 20 years thinking of ways to combine lightness and eco-performance so we can improve our isothermal and non-isothermal flasks and bottles.

The flask : a product used for mountain hiking that is so popular we no longer think about what is so extraordinary about it. Or what is so complicated about its production! What material should you choose ?

Each of its components has its advocates, because tastes and colours can play an important role when it comes to flasks. But these three materials share qualities that make them the champions of non-isothermal flasks; they allow us to make ultra-light flasks for adults and children at very affordable prices. They mean that you can find Quechua flasks for just a few euros. Because aluminium, stainless steel and plastic have the advantage of being easy to shape, which makes them cheaper to produce.

Where plastic wins over aluminium and stainless steel is in its transparency; this property of polymers means that the water level can be seen through the sides of the flask, so consumption can be measured and divided up throughout the hike. This is a major argument for the unpopular industrial component that is plastic!

But where plastic falls down is in its eco-responsibility criterion, as it is unanimously considered to be bad for the environment. This evolution is very unfair for the flask, as this everyday object has made plastic sustainable! What more than the flask moves us away from the concept of “disposable” and single-use water bottles ? So the subject of “plastic” is very nuanced when we look at it. Because contrary to received ideas, this component can be part of a sustainability approach, like our fleeces that we have been producing with recycled plastic bottles since 2010.

The longevity of a flask also depends on how it is looked after To help you look after yours and keep it for a long, long time... we have created these instructions: how to clean and look after your hiking flask.

To further reduce the environmental impact of our non-isothermal flasks, we will include more and more recycled plastic and recycled aluminium in their manufacture.

What we did successfully with fleeces (make the product as sustainable and eco-designed as possible, despite its dependence on polymers) we also plan to do with flasks!

In our quest for sustainability, we have also thought about the problem of the lid. Because even if the flask is unbreakable, the lid can still break ! Or get lost. If this happens, it can be tempting to throw the flask away and buy a new one. And that has a very negative impact on the planet. So we have started to sell flask lids on their own. That way, if they get broken or lost, you can buy a new one and extend the lifespan of your favourite flask!

Don’t forget that you only have one hob, so if you want to save time you need to organise your cooking. It is best to cook those things that take the longest first. During this time, you can do other things, such as chop your vegetables, set the table and do the washing up (while still keeping one eye on the flame).

One-pot meals are easy to cook on a camping stove. You only need one pan to prepare your meal.

The weather will not deter you ! Just think about being sheltered from the wind and rain while cooking. If you are travelling in a campervan, you can use the camping stove inside (unless this is prohibited) if you open the windows. If you are wild camping, do not cook in your tent but find shelter or take a windbreak. These weather alternatives are not dangerous, but they could slow down the cooking of your food.

Are you using a wood camping stove ?

Consider using wood that is very dry and matches to make it easy to light. It takes longer to cook on a wood camping stove than on a gas stove, and you risk losing patience if your flames take time to get going.

There is no doubt that everyone knows more or less how to wash up. But do you really know what to do? How to save time ?

How to choose between down or quilting

Do you not know how to choose between quilting or down for your trekking or hiking? Discover the advantages of each material !

Down : advantages and disadvantages

In short, down offers the best balance between comfort, compactness and weight. At an equal weight, a product filled with down will be warmer than one filled with quilting.

That said, the main enemy of down is humidity. If you are going trekking somewhere humid, you could well discover that your down doesn’t like water. You may have already experienced this: a down jacket or duvet put in the washing machine that comes out looking as if all the down has escaped during washing.

Obviously, that’s not the case ! But the feathers in your product have all clustered together due to the humidity. Place your product and some tennis balls in the dryer at a low temperature and on a short programme several times until it has expanded again.

So it is not advisable to take a down product out into rain or a humid environment as this may eliminate the insulating properties of your jacket or duvet.

And what about quilting ?

While down has a number of advantages, polyester quilting also has several ! So much so that recent years have seen higher performing quilting in terms of insulation, compression and lightness arrive on the market. Quilting is often described as synthetic insulation.

The main advantage of a quilted product is its ability to remain insulating and warm in humid conditions. This is ideal when you head off to a humid location or if you are unsure of the weather conditions.

Quilting is also very easy to wash!

Have you ever had a black jumper dotted with small feathers that have escaped from your padded jacket ? There’s no risk of that with quilting!

If you want to go even further, we have made commitments regarding the materials present in our products. By the end of 2022, all the polyester and cotton we use will be from more sustainable sources. Currently, in 2020, we already use 100% sustainable cotton in our products. But only 20% of the polyester in our products meets this requirement and this is our main challenge!

We are aware that we still have a lot of work to do to reduce this environmental impact, and are determined to continue working to promote change.

The main limits we currently face involve evaluating our products and their materials, more specifically in terms of choosing alternative materials. We have to be certain that a material that replaces another has less of an impact and is less polluting. To do this, we use external tests and studies and guarantee the reliability and independence of their results.

Our products must meet a number of technical and quality requirements. The alternatives are not always technologies that have reached maturity on the market. For example, we use organic cotton in some of our products, but its production is not as widespread. As a result, there is not as much availability as there is of conventionally grown cotton.

Today, more than 500 eco-designed products are available in our shops and on our website. However, they only represent a small part of our offer. Including the challenges of climate and resource depletion, the DECATHLON teams are aiming for 100% ecodesigned products by 2026.
